Beautiful! The Youngbloods Live In San Francisco 1971

    First Time Vinyl Release

    From The Original Analog Masters

Gatefold Album With Rare Photos And New Liners

By the time the Youngbloods, always crowd faves at the west coast ballrooms, performed live for San Francisco's free-form radio pioneer KSAN in 1971, they'd honed their set to a fine gloss. Featuring the smooth as apple-butter voice of Jesse Colin Young and the guitar/keyboard wizardry of Banana, backed by the rock-solid bass-and-drum tandem of Michael Kane and Joe Bauer, the Youngbloods positively sparkle here. We're elated to present for the first time on vinyl a 12-song set that's equal parts rocking R&B, dreamy jazzers and honky tonk flag-wavers, with just a little bit of psychedelic weirdness-topped off, of course, by a knockout version of their generational anthem, "Get Together." The Youngbloods: at the top of their game, making it all look so easy-and so damn beautiful. Mastered from the original analog reels and pressed on lush 180 gram vinyl.

    Song For Juli

The former Youngbloods lead singer's 1972 solo masterpiece... over one year on the Billboard Album chart!

While lead singer of The Youngbloods, Jesse Colin Young's legendary rock band took the nation by storm when their single Get Together became a worldwide #1 hit and a prominent soundtrack for peace. After seven albums with the group, Jesse released more than 15 celebrated solo albums including Song for Juli a work many critics agree is his solo masterpiece.

Although it was his fourth solo album, Song for Juli was Young's first full-fledged effort under his own name. Jesse organized a versatile backup band in which piano, violin, and horns complemented his beautiful tenor voice in arrangements that recalled Van Morrison's Caledonia Soul Orchestra and featured familiar blues, country, and Cajun elements. In his lyrics, Young hewed closely to the current back-to-the-land philosophy, celebrating his family life (Juli is his daughter) and his Ridgetop retreat in Marin County, CA.

Young's fans responded strongly to Song for Juli, giving it a higher chart placing than any album The Youngbloods ever made and keeping it in the charts longer than any album he ever made.

This is 70's California pop at it's best and the album is enjoyable from the first note to the last and shows the breadth of Young's stylistic talents. Solid songs, solid rhythm section, brilliant solos, perfect piano parts and one of the most distinctive voices in pop music. There are no disconcerting interludes here. You've got rock, jazz, country, and Cajun all smoothly rolled into one.

    High-Definition Vinyl!

The Youngbloods' sophomore release Earth Music is an uncommonly solid follow-up, expanding upon the musical directions introduced on their debut LP. The infectious Sugar Babe (also featured in Michelangelo Antonioni's film Zabriskie Point) is one of the group's most popular tunes, while such numbers as All My Dreams Blue, Dreamer's Dream, and Fool Me demonstrate the strength of the band members' songwriting skills and customized covers of Tim Hardin's Reason to Believe, the Holy Modal Rounders' Euphoria and Chuck Berry's Monkey Business demonstrate the Youngbloods' talent for seamlessly integrating a broad array of influences.

    Tear Down The Walls

The rumbling baritone of Fred Neil and Vince Martins earthy tenor... Its a vocal blend every bit as impressive as the great duos in music history: the Everly Brothers and Simon & Garfunkel with a Greenwich Village twist, of course. Put Neil and Martin, a pair of New York City folkie legends-in-the-making, into a recording studio with a young, pre-Spoonful John Sebastian on harmonica and Felix Pappalardi (later to produce Cream and the Youngbloods) on guitarron (an acoustic Mexican bass guitar) and magic is inevitable. This, of course, is Fred Neil in 1964, well before he just walked away from the folk scene and split for Florida and premature retirement in 1971, to remain an enigma until his recent death. Every recording by this compelling, monstrously talented singer/songwriter should be cherished like spun gold. From the original Elektra Records stereo master, Tear Down the Walls is one of Neils first studio sessions and is undeniably also one of his best.

    Wake Up

Wake Up is the debut album by indie pop band Youngblood Hawke.

The album's title (Wake Up) was inspired by Danny McGuire, a friend of the Youngblood Hawke band members. One day he was riding his bike home and got hit by a drunk driver. He was in a coma for a really long time. Youngblood Hawke wrote their song Dannyboy for him.

In the hills of East Alabama, Willem Maker has been honing his skills in virtual secrecy for the past decade. Deciding to step beyond the bedroom demos and occasional acoustic performance, Maker released last year's Stars Fell On and now he has decided to move even further along with it's follow up New Hand Moon. Recorded at several different locations including Memphis' Electraphonic Recordings with Scott Bomar and at Mark Nevers' (Will Oldham, Andrew Bird) Nashville studio The Beech House, New Hand Moon has a full guest cast of legendary Southern musicians such as Jim Dickinson, Cedric Burnside, Alvin Youngblood Hart and many more.

John Paul Keith is a native of Knoxville, TN who has moved around a lot and played in a lot of different bands (The V-Roys, The Nevers, Ryan Adams' Pink Hearts, Stateside, Harlan T. Bobo, Jack Oblivian and Jim Dickinson's garage rock project, Snake Eyes). Keith moved to Memphis a couple of years ago and hooked up with Alvin Youngblood Hart's former rhythm section, bassist M. Edgar Stuart and drummer John Argroves. They soon recruited guitarist/producer/recording engineer Kevin Cubbins, along with pedal steel player John Whittemore (Jack Oblivian & The Tennessee Tearjerkers) and organist/piano man Al Gamble. Philly-based band Cheerleader follow up 2014's On
Your Side EP and their UK-only "Perfect Vision" 7"
with their first full-length album, The Sunshine of Your
Youth. NYLON called them "the love child of Passion

Order at their most addictive," while KCRW said
Cheerleader's music is "giddy, triumphant world conquering
optimism. This is straight up power pop."

Blind Willie McTell (May 5, 1898 - August 19, 1959) was a Piedmont blues and ragtime singer and guitarist. He played with a fluid, syncopated fingerstyle guitar technique, common among many exponents of Piedmont blues. Unlike his contemporaries, he came to use twelve-string guitars exclusively. McTell was also an adept slide guitarist, unusual among ragtime bluesmen. His vocal style, a smooth and often laid-back tenor, differed greatly from many of the harsher voices of Delta bluesmen such as Charley Patton.

McTell's influence extended over a wide variety of artists, including the Allman Brothers Band, who covered his Statesboro Blues, and Bob Dylan, who paid tribute to him in his 1983 song Blind Willie McTell, the refrain of which is And I know no one can sing the blues like Blind Willie McTell. Other artists influenced by McTell include Taj Mahal, Alvin Youngblood Hart, Ralph McTell, Chris Smither and the White Stripes.

Crawling Up The Stairs is the second LP from Austin, Texas' Pure X. Made up
of principal members Nate Grace, Jesse Jenkins and Austin Youngblood, they
stay true to the dense sound they explored on their last album, Pleasure, but add
twinkling atmospherics and a new clarity to their carefully cultivated,
    emotionally heavy songs.

Where Pleasure was built on syrup-slow hooks and a weighty, sexy haze,
Crawling Up The Stairs is the sound of Pure X emerging from that humid
cocoon to stare all the screwed up parts of life directly in the face and embrace
them. When Grace's voice, cracked and worn, breaks through a fog of
downtempo drums and misty guitar on Someone Else, the pain that used to
be visible in his face when he was on stage is pushed to the forefront of their
sound, his voice growling and moaning with barely contained anger and
apocalyptic worry in anguished falsetto. Crawling isn't a record about escape,
it's about what you do after you've realized that escaping isn't an option and
you just have to face the world you live in head on.

Crawling Up The Stairs is an album born from emotional turmoil. For much of
2012, Grace was laid up with a serious leg injury. During the recording period,
he had no insurance, no money, and if he ever was going to walk again, he
needed to have surgery. Grace had no idea if he'd get the money together, and
was consumed with doubt, unable to sleep. After a cathartic but torturous night
of insomnia, heavy with world-worry and intermittent nightmares, Grace
emerged feeling exhausted and different. Not better or worse, but different.
Ready to heal. Crawling is the result of that. Track by track, Grace, Youngblood
and Jenkins-who shares vocal and songwriting duties-drag themselves
    through a bad year.

    Richland Woman Blues (Pure Pleasure)

Best known for that ditty about camels, Maria Muldaur has since established herself as one of the finest folk/country/jazz/blues/gospel interpreters ever to have a Top Five single. After 26 years and 24 solo albums, Muldaur -- inspired by a trip to Memphis' Beale Street -- digs deep into her roots and pays tribute to the classic blues women of the '20s and '30s. Aided by the similarly inclined Bonnie Raitt, Taj Mahal, and Alvin 'Youngblood' Hart, Muldaur breezes through 14 tunes from icons Bessie Smith and Memphis Minnie, as well as obscurities from the Reverend Gary Davis, Mississippi John Hurt, and Blind Willie Johnson. Keeping the unplugged accompaniment stripped way down to a single guitar or piano and occasional bass, Muldaur has room to maneuver her evocative vocals that shift from gritty groans to a high-pitched edgy trill. Far from a dry history lesson, these songs are performed with the strength and tenacity of the women who originally sang them. Whether spinning saucy, double entendre lyrics in Me And My Chauffeur Blues (»the way you ride so easy, I can't turn you down«) or longing for her Southern home after moving north during the Depression in Bessie Smith's Far Away Blues, the singer remains invigorated and inspired throughout. By returning to her late-'60s Jim Kweskin Jug Band coffeehouse days, Maria Muldaur has discovered her middle-aged oasis with Richland Woman Blues. And there's not a camel in sight.

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Love Power Peace

First Release Of 3 LP Set As Envisioned By James Brown

Includes Deluxe Jacket With Rare Photos And Liner Notes By Alan Leeds

Mastered From Brown's 1971 Mixdown Reels, Unused Until Now

James Brown's magnum opus! Love Power Peace is the sound of the Godfather and his youngblood J.B.'s (including Bootsy and Catfish Collins) electrifying a crazed Parisian audience on March 8, 1971. Sequenced and mixed by Brown himself for a planned triple album, the set was shelved when key band members departed before it could be issued. Here, for the first time, are the sides as intended, exactly as delivered by James Brown Productions to his label in 1971-a 3-LP set with each disc mastered from the original mixdown reels, and each with a unique name, Love, Power and Peace! Brown and band rip through recent singles like "Sex Machine," "Super Bad," "Give It Up or Turnit a Loose" and "Get Up, Get Into It, Get Involved" with a metronomic precision laid down by bassist Bootsy Collins and drummer Jabo Starks. "Ain't It Funky Now" - formerly a slow, simmering groove - is transformed into a fast, funky tour de force in which newbie Catfish Collins unleashes one of the most badass guitar solos ever, while a medley of three other Brown standards ("Papa's Got a Brand New Bag"/"I Got You (I Feel Good)"/"I Got the Feelin' ") blazes by faster than the Godfather of Soul's personal Learjet. Interspersed with just the right amount of slow numbers like "Georgia on My Mind," and including tracks from the show's supporting acts that were not included on the 1992 CD (which was a remixed, incomplete show), this document of the funk revolution features rare photos and liner notes by tour director Alan Leeds. The way to jump on board for a trip through James' world at the height of his career!

    Dark Night Of The Soul

This musical DNA has been in Jimbo Mathus since birth. His father and relatives
were all skilled musicians who filled the house with old folk, country and blues
tunes. By the age of eight, Mathus was joining them on mandolin and by his
teenage years had learned guitar and piano. High school led to playing in punk
and new wave bands, the most notable being Johnny Vomit and the Dry Heaves
and The End, with future Oblivian Jack Yarber. Post high school, Mathus studied
Philosophy at Mississippi State University before leaving to travel around
America. In doing so he worked various jobs, including an influential stint as
a barge tankerman on the mighty Mississippi River. Settling in Chapel Hill,
N.C., he drummed in the cult rock band Metal Flake Mother prior to starting
the Squirrel Nut Zippers. This ahead-of-its-time retro roots band scored a hit
with "Hot" and performed at President Clinton's second Inauguration and the
1996 Summer Olympics. Following the Zippers' split, Mathus worked with such
noted artists such as Buddy Guy and Elvis Costello, and collaborated with North
Mississippi Allstars guitarist Luther Dickinson and Alvin Youngblood Hart in the
South Memphis String Band. He also recorded his own albums (including one
dedicated to his childhood nanny Rosetta Patton, the daughter of Delta blues
    icon Charley Patton).

On most of 'Dark Night's' tracks, Mathus' acoustic guitar is surrounded by
the electric guitar played by his longtime sideman Matt Pierce and pal Eric
"Roscoe" Ambel. (Ambel produced 'White Buffalo' but on 'Dark Night' he focuses
exclusively on his righteous guitar playing.) The album's raw, rock sound arose
from the fact that most of the tracks were recorded live in the studio with
Mathus' band, the Tri-State Coalition, which he found "very liberating way of
doing it." Mathus feels very in synch with his bandmates (keyboardist Eric
Carlton, drummer Ryan Rogers, guitarist Pierce and guest bassist and Drive By
Trucker Matt Patton) since they have played together now for several years.
"The intensity you're hearing on this album," he proclaims, "is the spirit of a
band that is put ting it's shit on the line ."

Michael Hurley is one of the most beloved cult figures of the Greenwich Village folk scene and his songs have been recorded by everyone from the Holy Modal Rounders and the Youngbloods, to Vetiver and Cat Power. First Songs, recorded in 1964 when Hurley was only 22 years old, shows that his charming, bumming, hippie, wino persona was fully formed at an early age. The album features the first recorded versions of such Snock classics as The Werewolf Song and Captain Kidd. First Ever Vinyl Re-Issue Of The 1968 Psych Classic By Dino Valente

First Time Commercially Available In MONO

Recorded Under The Supervision Of Bob Johnston (Dylan, Cohen, Cash)

Original Liner Notes By Ralph Gleason

What was going on in 1968 when Dino Valente recorded this album? Well, he had already written 'Get Together' for the Youngbloods, been in and out of jail a couple of times, and put in time as lead vocalist for San Francisco's Quicksilver Messenger Service. While bouncing around Manhattan's East Village, Valente then teamed up with famed Dylan producer Bob Johnston to record his only solo effort. This album typifies the hippie-folk-troubadour syndrome with strumming, reverb-laden 12-string guitar and romantic odes of passion and heartbreak. Valente's pliant warble practically floats alone on these strange songs. While this music is folkish in nature, Valente's vocals display an offbeat, almost jazzy inflection reminiscent of the late Tim Buckley. - Mitch Myers

    Watermelon, Chicken & Grits

Like their moniker suggests, the six-man hip-hop group known as Nappy Roots are raw and untamed, yet deeply connected to the musical past. The Kentucky-based collective (Big V, Ron Clutch, Fishscales, R. Prophet, B. Stille, and Skinny DeVille) first made a name for themselves with their two independently released collections - 1998's COUNTRY FRIED CESS and and 1999's NO COMB, NO BRUSH, NO FADE, NO PERM - as well as with live shows alongside such hip-hop stars as Digital Underground, Youngbloods, Jim Crowes, 112, Cashmoney Millionaire, 8 Ball, Ruffryders, MJG, Sole, and Twista. In addition, the group scored with their version of Riches To Rags (Mmmkay), which was featured on Atlantic's 1999 release, MUSIC FROM AND INSPIRED BY THE MOTION PICTURE - SOUTH PARK: BIGGER, LONGER & UNCUT.

Now, with their long-awaited Atlantic Records debut, WATERMELON, CHICKEN, AND GRITZ, Nappy Roots are ready to spread their unique sound and vision from coast to coast. The group's organically funky hip-hop stylings blend serious lyrical science and Dirty South grooves, notably on tracks like the ruminating Life's A Risk and the block-rockin' party anthem, Ballin On A Budget. Produced by such esteemed hip-hop studio whizes as Carlos Broady (The Notorious B.I.G., Lil' Kim, Black Rob, India.Aire), Mike City (Sunshine Anderson, Bilal), the Trackboyz (Abyss), Jazze Pha (Ludacris, Too $hort), and Troy Johnson (Ray-J, Lil' Mo), WATERMELON, CHICKEN, AND GRITZ is likely to propel Nappy Roots to the forefront of modern hip-hop and beyond.

    World Boogie Is Coming

North Mississippi Allstars have announced the release of their record, World Boogie Is Coming. They produced it themselves at their own Zebra Ranch Studios in Hernando, MS, aside from a day in the studio with Robert Plant (and his harmonica) at Memphis' legendary Royal Studios. The Dickinson Brothers did it with the help of long-time friends Duwayne and Garry Burnside, Kenny Brown, Alvin Youngblood, Sharde Thomas (Otha Turner's granddaughter), Chris Chew, Steve Selvidge, Lightnin Malcolm, Plant and others. World Boogie Is Coming is the record that perfectly ties it all together, fusing all the elements that have made the Allstars special while pushing the band's sound further into the future than ever before.

Luther Dickinson says, "It all started when Seasick Steve told me: 'You are the one, you are the link, you have to keep it primitive and take it to the people.'" He continues, "I feel like I owe it the elders who taught me the traditional music in which I operate to let the music evolve and allow outside modern influences into the tradition to keep it alive and healthy. I realized that I had not been holding up my end of the deal. Since I am virtually devoid of modern influences, I turned to my brother Cody, who is my opposite in taste and style and loves modern music and production. Allowing Cody to produce the tracking sessions allowed me to sing and play wild and with abandon. Our contrasting styles are the heart of NMA."

Cody has discovered a love of filmmaking and knows that in this day and age you need multi media. He set out to use our landscape of modern day Mississippi and roadwork experiences to share with the audience a vision, a dreamscape of our world. We wanted the World Boogie Is Coming package to have as much visual content as possible, with the record itself being sonically cinematic, a montage of medleys similar to our live shows - the recording fell together beautifully with that intent. We set ambient microphones up around the whole studio - footsteps, rain, wind, talking, bugs and birds all played their part. Archival tapes of Otha and R.L. fell right into the pocket as soon as we transferred them, laughing, joking and jamming with their kids -transcending time and space, life and death."

"'World boogie is coming' was my father's favorite valediction," says Cody. "Naming this record after his closing phrase seemed like a great way to honor him and his memory. World boogie is coming is also a rallying cry. And the cry is this: It's time to boogie!"

This record represents two years of our collective lives," he continues. "Luther, myself and our crew touring the world and doing what we do best: Bringing our music straight to the people. World Boogie Is Coming documents that journey and narrative. The story tells itself. We set out to make a definitive and decisive record. It turned into the experience of a lifetime; our magnum opus. It is cinematic by design and infectious by nature, so sit back, relax and enjoy. Let's get large and have a good time."
