Shangri LaBarely a year after his debut, in November 2013 Jake Bugg returns with its bar-raising follow-up, Shangri La. IVRecords like Psychic Temple IV aren't made anymore. Maybe they never were. There is a magic present that some mistake for tubes or tape but it's no more complicated than putting the right musicians together with the right songs.
Produced and composed by band/cult leader Chris Schlarb, Psychic Temple IV is what happens when 87-year old Max Bennett (bassist on Joni Mitchell's Court and Spark and Hissing of Summer Lawns) plays with 26-year old drummer Tabor Allen (of Cherry Glazerr). British rock legend Terry Reid sings a trio of duets written and arranged for the only artist nicknamed Superlungs. When keyboardist Mick Rossi wrote to say he would be in town with the Philip Glass Ensemble, songs were composed and a new date was put on the calendar.
Psychic Temple IV was recorded in Los Angeles over a series of eight large scale sessions. In the spirit of the classic Wrecking Crew sessions for Phil Spector and the Beach Boys, the band was often tasked with recording four songs per session. Vocals were added as soon as the rhythm section tracks were cut with Terry Reid, Arlene Deradoorian, and Nedelle Torrisi joining Chris in the studio to work out harmony parts and sing live together.
After making his vocal debut on III, Schlarb toured the country twice over. His voice is assured and he seems to have lived with these songs (and the idea of singing) for some time. His melodies are soulful yet unpredictable having transferred his ability to write for instrumental ensembles to pop music. And yet the exploratory spirit of the first Psychic Temple album still abides. The music has been poured over with both care and abandon. There is magic in Psychic Temple IV. It was a Hollywood music publicist's fondest dream and worst nightmare, all at the same time. Jan Berry, the lead vocalist, composer and producer of famed surf/hot rod duo Jan & Dean had crashed his Corvette on the Sunset Strip late at night on April 19, 1966, almost killing himself. Jan remained in a coma for some time afterwards, and his rehab would take years rather than months. The hitmaking partnership of Jan & Dean, an act that had launched 14 winners into the national Top 40 over the previous six years, had come to a screeching halt. Or had it?
Dean Torrence, singer of the duo's ozone-scraping high parts, its specialist in vocal-stacking and its idea man when it came to personal presentation, decided to carry on single-handed while his partner was incapacitated. With the assistance of a few celebrated friends and session men who were regulars in Phil Spector's Wrecking Crew, bassist Joe Osborn, pianist Larry Knechtel, guitarist James Burton and drummer Mickey Jones, Dean began recording tracks whenever he could in Osborn's North Hollywood garage for what would become the new Jan & Dean album, Save for a Rainy Day.
The album was a spectacular concept, with its rain-related songs, both new and old, all linked together with the sound of a summer thunderstorm. Dean issued the LP in very limited quantities on his own J&D label and the album became the ultimate rarity in the Jan & Dean catalog. Enter Sundazed Music, who, in 1996, purchased the masters and rights to the album from Dean and gave it a proper, expanded release. Even if you don't know Barney Kessel, you know Barney Kessel -- as a first-string member of the group of LA session musicians nicknamed The Wrecking Crew, Kessel's guitar is heard on just about every LA-based hit you'd care to name from the 60s, including songs by the Monkees and The Beach Boys' legendary Smile LP. And that's Kessel's playing on the famous fight music from the Star Trek TV series. He was regarded as the very best of the session guitarists by just about everyone around, and guitarists everywhere site him as an influence.
But before he played rock and roll, Kessel was a jazz pioneer -- as one of the leading lights of the hard-bop movement, his jazz guitar was legendary, and he was ranked the No. 1 guitarist in Down Beat and Playboy for numerous years. He played with Sonny Rollins and Oscar Peterson (and Chico Marx -- yes, that Chico Marx!) as well as leading his own super-tight group. On albums such as The Poll Winners, Kessel defined the bop style with a jazz power trio, creating a body of work that made him a legend.

The previous two years had been intense to say the least: raising a child in New York City as his wife battled a serious illness. With these dark days behind them he spent the next seven days on the front porch writing the lyrics for what became Are You Serious. It's a breakthrough for him in that it gets to the quick of the matter. This is the record he needed to make right now and is certain to put him in the leading class of American songwriter.
The album was put together with a rigor akin to a novelist or playwright and musically crafted like a wrecking crew session where you have to be good right in that moment. There's little folksy quaintness or whimsical flights of fancy. There's less wordplay and more intent to process some difficult times that he went through. Good Times!Who's ready to have some fun with The Monkees as they celebrate their 50th anniversary? With a tour kicking off in May and the group's first new album in 20 years, GOOD TIMES!, releasing, Monkee-mania will be taking 2016 by storm!
GOOD TIMES! features all three surviving band members - Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith, and Peter Tork. The unmistakable voice of the late Davy Jones is also included with a vintage vocal featured on one song. To produce the new album, the band found the perfect musical co-conspirator in Grammy® and Emmy®-winning songwriter Adam Schlesinger (Fountains Of Wayne, Ivy).
Much like The Monkees' early albums, GOOD TIMES! features tracks written specifically for the band by some of the music world's most gifted songwriters, including Rivers Cuomo (Weezer), Ben Gibbard (Death Cab For Cutie), Andy Partridge (XTC), and Zach Rogue (Rogue Wave) as well as a song co-written by Noel Gallagher and Paul Weller. The album also includes songwriting contributions by Nesmith ("I Know What I Know") and Tork as well as producer Schlesinger.
To help bring the anniversary full circle, The Monkees completed songs for GOOD TIMES! that were originally recorded and written for the group during the 60s, including "Love To Love" by Neil Diamond, which features a vintage vocal by Jones. Harry Nilsson wrote the title track "Good Times," which he recorded at a session with Nesmith in January 1968. The production was never completed, so the band returned to the original session tape (featuring Nilsson's guide vocal) and have created a duet with his close friend Dolenz. "Good Times" will mark the first time Dolenz and Nilsson have sung together since Dolenz' May 1973 single "Daybreak." Other vintage 1960's tracks included on GOOD TIMES! feature L.A.'s famed "Wrecking Crew" of session musicians.

Since their beginnings in 1966, their television show, multiplatinum albums, hit singles and concert tours truly made The Monkees one of the most colossal stories in the music business. In 1969, Davy Jones, Michael Nesmith and Micky Dolenz went back to the studio as a trio this time and recorded the classic Instant Replay album. Noted for their hit single Tear Drop City, this masterwork also found The Monkees reuniting with the production team of Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart for several of the tracks as well as previous team Monkees writers like Carole King and Neil Sedaka, and highly touted producers like Bones Howe (The Association/Tom Waits) and Shorty Rogers and resulted in some of the finest collaborations ever with this superstar act. Instant Replay also offered the first look at Michael Nesmith's experimental and groundbreaking recording sessions in Nashville as well as solid compositions from all three Monkees.
Opening up with the pop rocker Through The Looking Glass, Micky Dolenz is on top of his game vocally with a brilliant background of horns, Bobby Hart on piano and guitar work by legends Keith Allison (Paul Revere & The Raiders) and Gerry McGee (The Ventures/John Mayall). A major fan favorite, this classic was performed at many of the reunion concerts over the years. The late great Davy Jones belts out another Boyce and Hart classic with the haunting ballad Don't Listen To Linda. The tune truly resonated with the fans back then and continues to be one of the more appreciated classics in his long list of time tested Monkees favorites. Carole King and Gerry Goffin's I Won't Be The Same Without Her features a strong vocal performance by Michael Nesmith and the stunning guitar work of both Monkees' Peter Tork and Glen Campbell. A real summer time feeling song, this track would be a nice bridge to Micky Dolenz's orchestral masterpiece Just A Game.
It is no secret that Nesmith was a fan of country music, but also lauded as one of the first pioneers of the country rock genre, not only with his contributions to the earlier Monkees' recordings as far back as Papa Gene's Blues, even for other noted artists like Linda Ronstadt for whom he penned her first smash single Different Drum. For the Instant Replay album, Nesmith ventured to Nashville's RCA Studios and cut Don't Wait For Me, the first released tune from his now famous Nashville sessions. With the fusion of country studio players and the voice and guitar of Michael Nesmith, The Monkees again were on the forefront of this new genre and would continue with this groundbreaking sound ever more so into future classics like The Monkees Present.
As the '60s would come to a close, Davy Jones would also contribute his major impact on the generation with his truly hip and psychedelic masterpiece You And I. Noted for its hard rock opening to side two, the track also features the stunning lead guitar textures of Neil Young who recently departed with The Buffalo Springfield. More favorites like Nesmith's While I Cry is one of the artist's finest compositions of the era. With Mike's beautiful acoustic guitar work and help from friends like Harry Nilsson, this ballad would truly become one of the more enduring songs from this 1969 classic Monkees album.
Neil Sedaka and Carol Bayer Sager contribute one of the classiest Monkees ballads ever with The Girl I Left Behind Me. Once again, the late great Davy Jones provides a superstar vocal second to none, with a soulful orchestra fill and band setting featuring the production and skillful piano work of Neil Sedaka, while Micky Dolenz would close out the album with his classic Shorty Blackwell. The whimsical tale of Micky's cat and a nod to his friends The Beatles' A Day In The Life, Shorty Blackwell would take almost a year to record and feature a bevy of the original wrecking crew of Hollywood musicians like drummer Jim Gordon (Eric Clapton/Traffic), Tommy Tedesco on guitar and even his sister Coco Dolenz on vocals. This track along with the other eleven tunes make this one of the more enduring and loved albums in the superior catalog of Monkees classics.

There are few bands that can or will match Sweden's Opeth. Since forming in the tiny Stockholm suburb of Bandhagen in 1990, the Swedes have eclipsed convention, defiantly crushed the odds, and, most importantly, crafted 12 stunningly beautiful, become one of the best bands on the planet; on album or on stage. Ask any Opeth fan. Enquire with any band that's shared the proverbial pine with the Swedes. Or, get a label representative to talk Opeth. They'll all tell you the same thing: Opeth are peerless. And they're only getting better.
Opeth's new album, Sorceress, their first for Nuclear Blast via the band's imprint label Moderbolaget Records, is proof chief architect Mikael Åkerfeldt has a near-endless well of greatness inside. From the album's opener "Persephone" to "The Wilde Flowers" and "Strange Brew" to the album's counterpart title tracks "Sorceress" and "Sorceress II", Opeth's twelfth full-length is an unparalleled adventure, where visions cleverly and secretly change, colours mute as if weathered by time, and sounds challenge profoundly. Sorceress is, by definition, moored in Åkerfeldt's impressive record collection-his one true vice-but, as always, there's more invention than appropriation at play.
"This time around I didn't think about what I wanted to do," Åkerfeldt reveals. "I was forced to write. But once I started, it was easy. This record, like the last record, didn't take long to write. Like five or six months. The thoughts behind this record developed as I was writing. The only thing I was thinking about with this record was to write that songs didn't musically connect. I made sure if I had a song that was new sounding for this record, I'd make the next song completely different. I think the songs are very different from one another. It's very diverse."
Certainly, every Opeth record has had diversity. In 1995, Orchid reset the rules of death metal. Six years later, Blackwater Park hit the high note for musicality in a genre generally devoid of it. Damnation, in 2003, was the work of a band determined to upend the norm. Five years after that, Watershed closed Opeth's chapter on death metal by visiting its darkest corners and holding its native brutality aloft. And in 2014, Pale Communion officially bridged the progressive music gap by twisting the intrepid sounds of '60s, '70s, and '80s into contemporary brilliance. So, really, what's so different about Sorceress?
"My music taste got a little wider," grins Åkerfeldt. "I started listening to jazz. I bought a lot of Coltrane records. I never really thought Coltrane would be for me because I like 'dinner jazz.' I like comfortable, soft, nice, and lovely jazz. Like Miles Davis' '50s stuff. Porgy and Bess, for example. I guess Dave Brubeck fits in there, too. So, that's the only new influx of musical inspiration for me. Other than that, I've been buying the same type of records I always have. Prog, symphonic rock, singer/songwriter, metal, hard rock But there wasn't anything that set me off like The Zombies or Scott Walker. Nothing got me going this time."
Actually, that's not entirely true. Åkerfeldt's always mining for progressive gold. Good, rare music is particularly good at getting his motor running. He found double-gold in one-off Italian outfit Il Paese dei Balocchi and Bobak, Jons, Malone's ultra-obscure Motherlight album. To wit, get Åkerfeldt talking about either and he's all too pleased to discuss the finer points of Il Paese dei Balocchi's string-based darkness or how he fan-boyed Malone via email to get the famed British orchestrator and one-time Iron Maiden producer to contribute to Sorceress.
"I absolutely love Il Paese dei Balocchi," Åkerfeldt professes. "They did one album. It's insanely good. It has everything I love about progressive rock in it. This album is so orchestrated and epic. It's got lots of string sections. It's very moody, dark, and sad. It's a mystery they didn't do any more. As for Will Malone, he did the strings and stuff for the Sabbath records-Sabotage and Never Say Die! But now he does strings for pop artists like Joss Stone, The Verve, Depeche Mode. I looked him up, mostly because he was the house engineer for Morgan Studios in the '60s. He was also in a few bands. Like Orange Bicycle and played on the Motherlight album. He also had a solo record, which is also amazing and superbly rare. It's orchestral. The bulk of it is strings. It's kind of like Nick Drake."
Åkerfeldt's quick to point out, however, his newfound progressive music loves didn't directly inspire him to write Sorceress. The majority of the album was penned in Opeth's rehearsal space, where, nestled comfortably in a corner, a computer, a keyboard, and a microphone sit ready for the next Opeth epic. It isn't plush, but it's exactly the type of environment the frontman needs to focus his creative self into song.
"When I'm in a writing mode, I have tunnel vision," says Åkerfeldt. "I have a really good work ethic. I go down to the studio everyday early in the morning and I work. I absolutely love it. It's so much fun. It's much easier now, too. I write complete demos. I sequence the songs in the order I want them to be on the record. I do mixing. I do overdubs. Once I'm done, I give copies to the guys so they can listen to the album. They practice to it on their own. When it's time to go into the studio, everybody does their own thing. It obviously works."
For Sorceress, Opeth returned to Rockfield Studios in Wales, where the Swedes had tracked Pale Communion in 2014 with Tom Dalgety. The experience was so positive and historical-the countryside studio was also home to pivotal Budgie, Queen, Rush, Judas Priest, and Mike Oldfield recordings-there really was no other option for Opeth and crew. Rockfield Studios or bust! The studio, with Dalgety yet again in tow, provided the necessary isolation, the right bucolic atmosphere, the best gear, and three square meals a day for Sorceress to come out the other end spitting fire. All in 12 bittersweet days, too.
"There was a time when I came out of our recordings a wreck," Åkerfeldt bemoans. "But now I come out with a wish. I wish it wouldn't have gone so quickly. There's emptiness after I leave the studio. I love writing and recording in the studio. It's lovely at Rockfield. It's in the sticks. It's got horses and cows. There's lots of sheep in Wales. But the studio is just a studio. It's so beautiful there. So quiet. It's a residential studio as well, so we live there while we're recording. We have chefs for us, too. So, we can just be there, playing, recording, and hanging out."
If life is like a Peter Max poster, the lyrics to Sorceress aren't. There's color, but they've been treated, corrupted, and befouled. That is to say, they're much darker. Some of bleak lyrical tones stem from Åkerfeldt's personal life-and are thusly contorted beyond recognition-while others touch grimly on topics like love and what happens to people on the other side of it. In fact, some of the lyrical ideas are similar to what was happening on Blackwater Park.
"I made sure to write good lyrics," Åkerfeldt laughs. "This sounds very old-fashioned black metal to say, but the lyrics are misanthropic. It's not a concept record, so there's no theme running through the record. Most of the record deals with love. The negative aspects of love. The jealously, the bitterness, the paranoia, and the mind games of love. So, it's a love record. Love songs. Love can be like a disease or a spell."
Luckily, for Åkerfeldt and crew-bassist Martín MÉndez, drummer Martin Axenrot, guitarist Fredrik Åkesson, and keyboardist Joakim Svalberg-the lineup doesn't have to deal with Sorceress' main theme. They've been together since Heritage was completed, and according to Åkerfeldt he's not been in a better band situation before. Not since Orchid. Not since Still Life. Not since Ghost Reveries.
"It's the best band situation I've ever had. Fans will look at our eras and have their favorite lineup, but this is the best. Even the happiest days of the first and second lineups aren't comparable to what I have now. We never fight. It's like a good work team. We know each other professionally and personally. As much as we're a band, we're also friends. We hang out when we're not doing Opeth."
A core team is a good thing, when Opeth's credibility is in full view of fans and critics. Åkerfeldt's very aware of what the masses have had to say about Opeth since Watershed. While some disliked the musical shift on Heritage, most have applauded it. They've come to expect something new from Opeth. True to form, Sorceress will give long-time fans and weary critics reason to re-think Opeth and what it takes to be musically fearless.
"I hope they'll like the record," posits Åkerfeldt. "I can only talk from my perspective and taste here, but we offer diversity that's not really present in the scene today. Whatever genre. We've always been a special band. We've gotten a lot of shit for being different. We still do. Our time will come, I think. It comes down to perseverance. It comes down to not giving up or giving in to public opinion. Music is about doing your own thing or going your own way."1. Persephone
