There's A Blue Bird In My Heart

Anders Parker has a recording of new music coming out June 17th, and it is called There's a Blue Bird in my Heart. Released by his new record label, Recorded & Freed, the album of nine distinct tracks was created in Burlington, Vermont. The initial tracks were all cut live with his band Cloud Badge, before the process relocated to Athens, Georgia for additional recording and mixing by the legendary David Barbe (Bob Mould, Drive-by Truckers, Son Volt), and guest appearances by local Athens talent. This is the first release of new Parker material in over four years. A.P. did not sit idle during the interim, having recorded and released more than twenty-three tracks with the Woody Guthrie-inspired New Multitudes supergroup that also included Jay Farrar, Jim James, and Will Johnson. He also released a beautifully lyrical album of music with longtime ally Kendall Meade called Wild Chorus under the band name, Anders & Kendall. All of these efforts add to the continued entries in the ledger of his life's body of work that include his work with Space Needle, Gob Iron (also with Jay Farrar), five albums recorded under the anonymity of the name Varnaline, five albums recorded under his name, and a live "field recording" from a Portland, Oregon tour stop in 2005.

    Royal City

For a generation of Guelph music fans, Royal City was something akin to a supergroup. From his early teens, Aaron Riches was a figurehead in the city's hardcore punk scene, fronting numerous politically charged punk bands and promoting DIY gigs. Tracing punk's spiritual heritage back to Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan, Aaron found himself drawn to the acoustic guitar and began writing softly strummed songs about streetlights, Shakespeare, dogs, and broken hearts, all sung in his creaky, distinctive voice. This previously unreleased collection tells the story of Royal City. LP limited to 1,000; CD limited to 4,500.

    New Multitudes

New Multitudes is an intimate interpretation of American icon and musical legend Woody Guthries previously unrecorded lyrics from a dream team of Americana torchbearers: Jay Farrar (Son Volt), Will Johnson (Centro-matic), Anders Parker (Varnaline) and Jim James (My Morning Jacket). What makes this album such a rarity in todays music world is the allowance of the songs infectious simplicity to stand alone in all their glory. In doing so, Farrar, Johnson, Parker and James, pay the greatest compliment to Woody Guthrie and the collaborative spirit he so greatly embodied. This is an album which seamlessly converges the sepia-toned essence of the time honored past with the risks needed to forge the future.

Under the invitation of Nora Guthrie, Woody's daughter, to tour the Guthrie archives, each of the four songwriters were offered the chance to plumb and mine the plethora of notebooks, scratch pads, napkins, etc. for anything that might inspire them to lend their voices and give the words new life.

These guys worked on an amazing group of lyrics says Nora. Much of it was culled from Woody's times in L.A. Lyric wise, it's a part of the story that is still mostly unknown. From Woody's experiences on L.A.'s skid row to his later years in Topanga Canyon, they are uniquely intimate, and relate two distinctly emotional periods in his life.

Musically, it is the sense of collaboration that makes New Multitudes not just another trite and traditional acoustic regurgitation of back porch blues. From the ragged jangle of its opening track, Hoping Machine, the loping lilt of Fly High, the floorboard stomp of No Fear, to the lush warmth and sudden sonic gut punch of My Revolutionary Mind, the cohorts deliver a lesson in discovering a song's sweet spot time and time again. It's the function and preparedness of each artist's dogged work ethic gleaned the old-fashion way; veracious songs, road weary odometers and sweat stained live shows, all attributes of the man they are honoring.

Laura Veirs' new album is a collection of folk songs for children called Tumble Bee. Mr. Love And Justice

In his two and a half decades carrying the torch of social justice, Billy Bragg has melded the folksy populism of Woody Guthrie with the anger and indignation of The Clash. Both are perfectly encapsulated on his Anti debut, Mr. Love & Justice. Despite the intense politics behind his songs, Billy has never lost sight of the power of personal relationships to hold us together and bring about the kind of redemption that outstrips even the greatest political movements. Musically, this record combines the loose, Stonesy groove Bragg found working with Wilco on the Mermaid Ave. sessions, with the best parts of his punk and music hall roots. On his most mature record to date, the title says it all.

Featuring Songs Compiled and Sequenced by Zach Cowie from Woody Guthrie, Nina Simone, Kermit The Frog, Carole King and many more!

Includes Original Storybook with Illustrations by Artist Jess Rotter

What if your favorite children s book were not only a timeless story but came with a soundtrack of tunes that kids and grown-ups alike would love? Hold onto your boots... it s here! This Record Belongs To: is the antidote to your standard kids compilations. You won t find boy bands, princesses, or purple dinosaurs here. Instead the record consists of two halves an upbeat side for daytime dancin and a mellow side for bedtime lullabies. Among the many gems featured include songs from Carole King, Woody Guthrie, Donovan, Harry Nilsson, Jerry Garcia, Nina Simone, Kermit The Frog and more. Inspired by the classic Little Golden Books Series and Sesame Street s In Harmony albums, This Record Belongs To: stems from a love of music, reading, and a passion for teaching future generations the interactive experience of holding an album in your hands, putting needle to groove, and immersing yourself in the pages of a record s sleeve as the music plays. The compilation was compiled and sequenced by DJ and friend, Zach Cowie, who is as dear to our hearts as this collection of songs (previously passed around as a gift between friends) and is the soundtrack for many LITA & TMR offspring. These kiddos now all have undeniably excellent taste in tunes. The record is accompanied by an original, full-color storybook illustrated by acclaimed artist, Jess Rotter, which tells the tale of five forest pals who find a mysterious object a round, flat disc that they proceed to investigate. The animal friends finally solve the mystery and learn how to play a record and let their bodies move to the groove (within the grooves).

    The Felice Brothers

Their distinct brand of songwriting and the lawless sound they've forged has earned them comparisons to Woodie Guthrie, a young Springsteen, and the Scorcese film, Gangs Of New York. In these tales of murder, pathos, lust, and love, you'll find an honest new brand of American storytelling and song. Scruffy and scratched Americana that recalls Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, and early Springsteen - Time Out London. The Felice Brothers' Catskills folk is rough around the edges and intoxicating. Ryan Adams, eat your heart out - Metroland / Best Of 2007. Backwoods Americana is all the rage, but this band of brothers is a cut above the rest - The Sun UK (4 stars).

    Denison Witmer

Since Denison Witmer's last album (2005's Are You A Dreamer?), there has been time, craft, perfection, slow quiet reflection and production. Now, there's Denison Witmer.

Fans who liked Dreamer, Denison's best-selling record, will love Denison Witmer. They'll appreciate that Sufjan Stevens, William Fitzsimmons, and Devin Greenwood (Norah Jones, Amos Lee) all appear on this record. They'll love the way Denison has figured out what works. They'll appreciate the attention to detail, in songwriting and in production.

For those new to Denison, they'll find something familiar in these songs-a style steeped in the tradition of singer-songwriters like Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, and even Woodie Guthrie; a style
echoed in young singer-songwriters today, who grew up listening to Denison's early albums and carried that inspiration into their own music.

    Mermaid Avenue Vol. II

ho knew that after the undeniable, sometimes shimmering, sometimes rustic magic of Mermaid Avenue that there was enough quality material for a second volume? By setting their own music to Woody Guthrie's lyrics, Billy Bragg and Wilco once again offer a 50-minute testament to Guthrie's long, dynamic shadow. This sophomore meeting is as balanced between the up-tempo and the down-tempo as was the first Mermaid. Jeff Tweedy's rasp gives all the Wilco-driven tunes a certain grit, and the songs Bragg takes on have a luminescent, frank earnestness that intensifies the delivery of Guthrie's lyrical social critiques. Hot Rod Hotel, with Bragg on the mic, melds the two approaches best, and Secret of the Sea is the CD's poppiest centerpiece--aptly aimed at radio airplay like the first Mermaid's California Stars. Natalie Merchant's playful I Was Born is brief but sweet, just as bluesman Corey Harris's Against the Law is an uplift, with his passionate vocal wail mirroring the political gist of Guthrie's words. The moody closers Black Wind Blowing and Someday, Some Morning, Sometime end Volume 2 with a pair of sweetly sad gems, one a Bragg-sung folk blues that mourns the loss of cotton crops in the American dustbowl era, the other a Tweedy-sung paean to lost love. At the dawn of a new millennium, with labor and the distribution of wealth as pressing historical issues that disrupt every International Monetary Fund and World Trade Organization soiree, the time is right for Woody. --Andrew Bartlett

    Mermaid Avenue Vol. III

When American folk legend Woody Guthrie died in 1967, at the age of 55, among his stored belongings were thousands of complete song lyrics for which he had not written out music or made recordings. Many of them had been written in the 1940s and '50s, in the Guthrie family home on Mermaid Avenue in Coney Island, Brooklyn. The lyrics remained in boxes for decades, but once his daughter Nora found them in the 1990s, she knew they had to be shared. She approached English singer-songwriter and activist Billy Bragg to select some to set to music. The Chicago rock band Wilco came aboard soon after, with Jeff Tweedy writing music-along with his late bandmate Jay Bennett on some songs-and the band recording with both Tweedy and Bragg on vocals. Natalie Merchant joined the group to sing a duet with Bragg and two solo songs, and guitarist/singer Corey Harris, who wrote two songs and co-wrote one, performed on many tracks.

In 1998, the first batch of songs was released to critical acclaim as Mermaid Avenue, receiving a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Folk Album. This second volume followed in 2000. This third volume, released in conjunction with Mermaid Avenue: The Complete Sessions.

    Roadhouse Sun

With a writing style that echoes the working-man sympathy anthems of Woody Guthrie combined with the folky nature of Bob Dylan and a voice that mirrors Bruce Springsteen's, Ryan Bingham is quickly making a name for himself as one of the up and coming Texas bred songwriters. Born in Hobbs, New Mexico, and raised in rural Texas towns like Spring and Stephenville, Bingham made his living as a bullrider on the Texas rodeo circuit. He entertained his rodeo buddies with songs while selling his self-produced records at small clubs and rodeos along the way. His songwriting and voice soon got him noticed by idol and mentor Joe Ely along with Terry Allen, Guy Clark and other Texas legends. His major label debut, 2007's Mescalito, bears the hardscrabble marking of someone accustomed to the tough life. It veers from campfire balladry to ragged roots rock that bristles with roadhouse energy, wrote No Depression. Bingham's major label follow-up Roadhouse Sun is set for release in May of 2009 from Lost Highway Records.

    The Warrior's Code

The Warrior's Code is the fifth studio album of the Dropkick Murphys. Released in June 2005, it is also their bestselling. It features a dedication to Lowell's own "Irish" Micky Ward.

"Your Spirit's Alive" was written for the band's dear friend Greg "Chickenman" Riley, who died in a motorcycle accident in 2004. "The Warrior's Code" is about boxing legend Micky Ward, who hails from Lowell, Massachusetts. "Captain Kelly's Kitchen" is another of the band's traditional arrangements. "Sunshine Highway" was the first single from this album and has surfaced in many places including Royal Caribbean's Sports' Deck. "The Green Fields of France" is a cover of a song originally performed by Eric Bogle. The lyrics to "I'm Shipping Up to Boston" come from unpublished Woody Guthrie lyrics, consisting of a short rant by a sailor looking for a wooden leg in Boston. It is similar to "There's Gonna Be a Blackout" from their previous album, Blackout. "Wicked Sensitive Crew" is a spit at the band's critics who claim that they glorify violence and come across as 'tough guys'. "Last Letter Home" was correspondence between American Sgt. Andrew Farrar and his family before his death in the current Iraq War. "Tessie" is a reworking of a Boston Red Sox rally song. On this release, it is called a bonus track because it was already released on the Tessie EP in 2004 during the Red Sox season where they ended up winning the World Series for the first time in 86 years.

STUNNING 180 GRAM VINYL RELEASE OF THIS BOB DYLAN LIVE PERFORMANCE

    1000 ONLY LIMITED EDITION

Not yet 21 and with his first album still unreleased, a largely unknown Bob Dylan was invited by New Yorks WBAI radio to perform a live broadcast for Cynthia Goodings Folksinger s Choice programme on March 11th 1962.

This legendary recording, available here for the first time on vinyl, illustrates perfectly the scope and manner of Dylans live repertoire in the months leading up to his debut release.

In addition to the three originals, all newly minted by Dylan, he covers songs by the likes of Hank Williams, Woody Guthrie and Big Joe Williams, but interestingly does not perform any tracks that would feature on his first record just weeks from release at the time of this broadcast.

Folksinger's Choice also contains the only known Dylan performances of Smokestack Lightning, Hard Travelin and Roll On, John and features the first known outings of The Death Of Emmett Till and Standing On The Highway

The 11 songs performed are liberally interspersed with chat between Bob and Cynthia, however, far from spoiling the show, this only go to enhance one of the best early recordings we have of Bob Dylan, making this LP an incredibly important early document.

    Zip-A-Dee Doo Dah

One of the most talented acts in Phil Spector's stellar recording stable, Bob B. Soxx and the Blue Jeans featured the great Darlene Love, one of Spector's favorite vocal muses; Fanita James, who also sang alongside Love in the ubiquitous studio vocal group the Blossoms; and Bob B. Soxx himself, aka renowned singer Bobby Sheen, a legend in West Coast R&B circles. The trio's uncanny abilities provided Spector with an ideal vehicle to perfect his musical formula, making the trio's 1963 album Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah one of the most enchanting items in the Philles label catalog.

Recorded in the hallowed environs of L.A.'s Gold Star Studios with backup from the legendary Wrecking Crew, Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah finds the trio cutting loose on a high-energy set that includes the Disney-inspired title hit and the infectious Why Do Lovers Break Each Other's Heart? Love's powerful vocals are also featured on "My Heart Beat a Little Faster and the Jackie DeShannon-penned Jimmy Baby, while the ever-soulful Sheen is showcased on such tunes as Dear (Here Comes My Baby) and Everything's Gonna Be All Right. Meanwhile, a left-field reading of Woody Guthrie's This Land Is Your Land and the album-closing instrumental Dr. Kaplan's Office demonstrate Spector's quirkier side.

    I Can't Imagine

I Can't Imagine, Shelby Lynne's 13th full-length album and first for Rounder Records, is the most beautifully crafted and intensely affecting set of songs since her landmark I Am Shelby Lynne in 2000. It starts, as always, with that voice. Two parts Alabama sunshine; one part Memphis rainstorm, it's one of the most gorgeous sounding instruments in all of popular music. Comprising 10 new songs written or co-written by the GRAMMY winning singer-songwriter, I Can't Imagine is powered by Lynne's lustrous, virtuosic vocal performance, indelible, sparkling songwriting, and the sympathetic, versatile playing of a top-flight band, led by guitarist Ben Peeler. The songs themselves reflect a panoply of Lynne's influences from Southern soul, Crescent City R&B, and California country & western to the ardent social consciousness of precursors like Woody Guthrie and even the roots 'n blues vocalizing of Billie Holiday all brought into clear focus by Lynne's keen, sophisticated pop sensibility. An artist in full creative command, Shelby Lynne's I Can't Imagine is an inspired work of purity and depth - sure to be one of 2015's most essential recordings.

    Sweetheart Of The Rodeo

Ranked 117/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

With one mighty swing of the axe, the Byrds changed not only the face of rock 'n' roll but country music, as well, with their sixth album, 1968's Sweetheart Of The Rodeo. Tired of dipping a toe into the genre, Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman added singer Gram Parsons and drummer Kevin Kelley and went for total immersion. The baptism of country-rock was a natural with Parsons, former International Submarine Band frontman, now on board. And the repertoire was wide open for country classics by the Louvin Brothers (The Christian Life) and Merle Haggard (Life In Prison), as well as Depression-era ballads (Woody Guthrie's Pretty Boy Floyd) and honky tonk weepers cut by George Jones (You're Still On My Mind). The town wasn't big enough for both of them, of course, and Parsons soon split to form the Flying Burrito Brothers, but it sure was nice while it lasted!

We're proud to present the reissue of this monumental recording in its original, stereo incarnation, cut directly from the original Columbia Recordings analog stereo masters, with perfect artwork restoration and meticulously faithful mastering.
