Featuring Joe Zawinul, Wayne Shorter, Miroslav Vitous, Dom Um Romao & Herschel Dwellingham

Mastered By Joe Reagoso And Pressed At R.T.I.

The legendary Weather Report set the music world on fire back in the early seventies with their hypnotic
blend of progressive-fused jazz with funk, prog-rock and soul, augmented with the brilliant and skillful
musicianship of their superstar founders Wayne Shorter on saxophone and various electronic reeds and the

musicians/composers worked with Miles Davis on his classics like Bitches Brew, plus solid tenures with legends

    for things to come.

Throughout the seventies and beyond, Weather Report's fine arsenal of recordings would take the band
to the top of all the popular music charts. The 1973 fusion classic Sweetnighter would go on to yield one of
the biggest albums of their career as it hit the top rungs of the jazz charts, plus major showings in the pop and
    R&B charts.

No stone is left unturned, as this masterpiece is loaded with hit after hit with smashes like Joe Zawinul's
funk infused Boogie Woogie Waltz, the powerful Manolete by Wayne Shorter and of course Miroslav Vitous'
    soulful Will.

As one of the most enduring albums in their massive career catalog, Sweetnighter took the fans by storm,
forever retaining the title superstars to the Weather Report franchise.

Mastered From The Original Master Tapes By Bernie Grundman

Pressed On 180gram Audiophile-grade Vinyl At Pallas In Germany

Winner Of The Swing Journal Grand Prix Award And Jazz Album Of The Year From Downbeat Magazine

"One of the most impressive debuts of all time by a jazz group." - AllMusic.com

Here we have the free-floating, abstract beginnings of
Weather Report, which would define the state of the
electronic jazz/rock art from its first note almost to its
last. Their first album is a direct extension of the Miles
Davis In a Silent Way/Bitches Brew period, more fluid
in sound and more volatile in interplay. All Music calls
it one of the most impressive debuts of all time by a
jazz group. Weather Report is getting new life with
this incredible pressing. Mastered from original tapes
at 45rpm, and pressed on two 180 gram audiophile-grade vinyl. This is the essential edition of this album.

    Live In Berlin: 1975

To commemorate the 40th anniversary of the founding of Weather Report, the Zawinul estate is proud to release this live document of the supergroups appearance at the 1975 Jazztage Berlin, one of the oldest and most prestigious jazz festivals in Europe. This is the first time that this historic performance has been made available commercially

From the opening strains of Wayne Shorters propulsive Freezing Fire to Joe Zawinuls exotic Badia (a template for the world music movement that would come over a decade later), Live in Berlin, 1975 crackles with an audacious spirit of discovery and daring, underscored by an uncanny sense of group-thinking that allowed the band to be truly in the moment from tune to tune, from bar to bar.

    In New York

An exceedingly excellent live date from the legendary Village Vanguard, In New York captures the recording debut of the Adderley Sextet and finds
Cannonball gliding through seven tunes with swinging ease on alto saxophone. Joined by brother Nat on cornet, and the versatile Yusef Lateef on tenor,
flute, and oboe, Cannonball and his crew turn in what All About Jazz calls perhaps the single most indispensable recording by the Adderley Brothers. In
New York is also the first recorded appearance of pianist Joe Zawinul who would go on to jazz prominence as a pioneer of the jazz-fusion genre and a
founding member of the seminal group Weather Report. This special vinyl reissue is a must-have for fans of straight-ahead, classic jazz with an

    Hejira

After the expanded instrumental scale and sonic experimentation of Court & Spark and The Hissing of Summer Lawns, Joni Mitchell reverses that flow for the more intimate, interior music on Hejira, which retracts the arranging style to focus on Mitchell's distinctive acoustic guitar and piano, and the brilliant, lyrical bass fantasias of fretless bass innovator Jaco Pastorius. Known for his furious, sometimes rococo figures beneath the music of Weather Report, Pastorius is tamed by Mitchell's cooler, more deliberate ballads: these meditations coax a far gentler, subdued lyricism from Pastorius, whose intricate bass counterpoints Mitchell's coolly elegant singing, especially on the sublime Amelia, which transforms the mystery of Amelia Earheart into a parable of both feminism and romantic self-discovery. This isn't Mitchell at her most obviously ambitious, yet the depth of feeling, poetic reach, and musical confidence make this among the finest works in a very fine canon. --Sam Sutherland

    Tale Spinnin' (Speakers Corner)

We played music that people listened to every day just as they watch the news every evening, music which changed constantly - just like the weather, reminisced Joe Zawinul when talking about coming up with a name for the group. This would probably frighten off listeners in today's mass market. But back in those days CBS was satisfied with the group's sound being somewhat similar to the Miles Davis Combo and offered them a recording contract without carrying out the usual sound check. The magic potion Bitches Brew, which Zawinul and Wayne Shorter had conjured up with Miles Davis, was promising of exhilarating new things to come.

The heart-stopping mix of motivic fixed points and exciting improvisations, »the sketchy melodies, all that a synthesizer and other similar electronic devices could offer, combined with a Milky Way of rhythms« (Der Spiegel) was the pathway down which the group went - without ever becoming pure routine. The fifth album, Tale Spinnin', is captivating for its wealth of distinctive, often warm, synthesized sounds, which are further enhanced by Wayne Shorter's bright, twangy soprano saxophone, lending it a jazzy aura. To be sure, this gripping jazz fusion never progresses steadily all the time, but takes up snatchy, though seemingly familiar, melodic ingredients and combines them to produce a new mixture. Badia, however, is completely different: a quietly flowing and totally rhythmic ethnic work, which today would be classified as World Music.

    Musicians:

    • Joe Zawinul (keyboards, percussion, vocals)

    • Wayne Shorter (tenor saxophone, soprano saxophone)

    • Alphonso Johnson (bass)

    • Alyrio Lima (percussion)

    • Leon Ndugu Chandler (drums)

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Mysterious Traveller (Speakers Corner)

In Weather Report's fourth album the mysterious multi-instrumentalist Joe Zawinul travels once again through his virtually endless sound universe. And once again the question arises as to whether he will manage to leave his genetic fingerprint - without resorting to routine - on all the newly created sounds. The magic word here is naturalness, which makes its way safely and surely through the electronic backdrop.

Nubian Sundance, performed with two drummers and a percussionist, twists and turns in an apparently disoriented, meditative fashion through a mix of sizzling sound and colours, leading up to the final live applause that brings this dance to a close and making it a real experience for all. Following the translucent, will-o'-the-wisp-like American Tango is Cucumber Slumber with its compact funky sound created by a cool mix of saxophone and the sucking sound of a synthesizer. The two protagonists Zawinul and Shorter seem to be on a par with one another in the dazzling title piece where the lyrical saxophone part is supported by thunderous piano chords. Warm, dreamy harmonies are heard for a short while, only to be hacked apart in Blackthorn Rose - this is no orbital music floating around in your head but sheer tension, which makes you clutch your seat until landing. Back on earth the mysterious traveller was received with open arms with the readers of Down Beat magazine voting the LP 'Album of the Year 1974'.

    Black Market

Weather Report was one of the most influential jazz-fusion groups of their era, and outlasted many of its contemporaries such as Herbie Hancock's Headhunters and The Mahavishnu Orchestra.
Despite many personnel changes over its 16 year lifespan, they continued to create groundbreaking music under the guidance of Joe Zawinul.

Bandmembers Zawinul, Shorter and Moreira all played the bands of Miles Davis and at first Weather Report was a direct extension of Miles' 'In A Silent Way'/ 'Bitches Brew' period.

But when bassist Jaco Pastorius became a bandmember in 1976, Weather Report entered their most popular phase including the release of 'Black Market'.
This sixth album is influenced greatly by African music. Combined with jazz we could describe this genre as world fusion.

    Rit

From one of his first sessions at 16 with the Mamas and Papas to accompanying Lena Horne and Tony Bennett at 18, Lee Ritenour's forty year career is highlighted by a Grammy Award win for his 1986 collaboration with Dave Grusin, Harlequin; 17 Grammy nominations; numerous #1 spots in guitar polls and the prestigious Alumnus of the Year award from USC.

Growing up in L.A. in the 60's, Grammy award winning guitarist Lee Ritenour has recorded over 40 albums, with 35 chart songs, notably the Top 15 hit Is It You, which has become a contemporary jazz radio classic. In the 90s, Ritenour was a founding member of Fourplay, the most successful band in contemporary jazz, with keyboardist Bob James, bassist Nathan East and drummer Harvey Mason.

Rit is his 1981 album, recorded with a number of industry greats, including Weather Report's Alex Acuna, Bill Champlin (of '70s San Francisco Rock group The Sons Of Champlin, as well as Chicago), drummer Harvey Mason and Toto rhythm master Jeff Porcaro.

    Heavy Weather

Weather report's seventh album, released in 1977.
It is the band's second album with bassist Jaco Pastorius, but on this one he is a permanent member of the band.

Its opening track, Birdland, was a significant commercial success, something not typical of instrumental music.
A striking feature of Birdland is Pastorius picking harmonics on his fretless bass.

Released just as the Jazz-rock or Fusion movement began to run out of steam, this landmark album proved that there was plenty of creative life left in the idiom.

Vivaldi: The Four Seasons (Awaiting Repress)

Tacets tube-only recording technique, renowned for their crystal clarity and spaciousness, score another triumph here. How should Vivaldis Four Seasons be played? How should it be heard? As an onomatopoeic animal show and weather report? As an emotional Baroque violin concerto? Or simply as a musical »contest between harmony and invention« as the composer himself put it? Countless violinists have attempted to answer these questions with countless new versions and different performance styles of this timeless work. And so we stand, quite at a loss, faced with a myriad of recordings, which range from flamboyant, symphonic readings to ethereal chirruping, and even trendy disco versions.

That the work can be beautifully performed without resorting to venturesome experiments is shown by the PCPO and soloist Daniel Gaede, who focus on authenticity and straightforwardness in their reading, without pledging themselves to a scholastic performance practice as preached by some Baroque gurus. The colourful constant change from good-humoured playing together to 'contesting' with one another is filled with the sheer joy of music-making that is free of mannerisms and whims. These performers demonstrate just how smoothly a four-wheeled Baroque motor can run: it purrs, sings, murmurs, accelerates and slackens without juddering in the least. This recordings forte is found in the light-hearted simplicity and naturalness of the playing and the finely balanced analogue sound recording.

    Coming Of Age

Call it a generous fluency, an affable virtuosity. Call it a true band spirit. The best bands have all had something that can't be forced: A refined mastery of music and a willingness to converse through music. That's what you hear, above all, on bassist Ben Williams' sophomore recording, Coming of Age: The sound of a musician who's cultivated an authentic rapport with some of the best young players in New York City.

We have these group texts that we send to each other all the time," Williams says of his band, Sound Effect. "We're just as entertaining to each other off stage as on. If there were ever a reality show about jazz, we'd be good candidates for it!"

Coming of Age for the 30-year-old Williams means playing a lively role among his peers and a vital part in the music world at large. After winning the prestigious Monk Institute Competition in 2009, Williams got busy turning his youthful promise into real achievement. "My career as a bandleader and composer started from the moment I won," he says. "I had this opportunity to say something-and an obligation, too." In 2011 Williams delivered a debut album, State Of Art, to great critical acclaim and toured widely as a bandleader with Sound Effect. He became a sought after and beloved sideman, playing so many sets at one year's Winter Jazzfest that he rarely left the stage. Most impressively, he assumed a highly-coveted place in guitarist Pat Metheny's Unity Band. "Ben has a fearless and open-minded approach to what music can be," Metheny has said. "A wonderful combination of skills."

For all his strides in bandleading and performing, on the track Coming of Age Williams shows his greatest growth as a composer. "Composing seems like a nebulous thing," he says. "But the ability to translate a feeling into actual music, takes a lot of doing it, a lot of practice. Which chord is going to invoke this feeling? What's the best key for this idea?" And Williams has some big ideas and feelings to convey, necessitating heavy skill in musical translation and storytelling. On "Toy Soldiers," for example, a martial rhythm and chantlike riff send a message about the sacrifices of war. He wrote the uplifting "Strength And Beauty" on the day of the 2012 Newtown school shooting.

"The tragic news hit me hard, and this tune came to me as a way of feeling my way through the tragedy. The title was inspired later, when I saw how [jazz saxophonist] Jimmy Greene and his family responded to losing their daughter at Newtown. Their pain is something most of us can't even imagine, but the way Jimmy held it together and became a beacon of light and true strength was an inspiration to everyone."

Williams takes a page from the Miles Davis school of bandleading by encouraging his band members to compose in the studio, too. For the R&B tribute anthem "Voice of Freedom (for Mandela)," Williams enlisted the smooth soulfulness of singer-songwriter Goapele-and then headed in to record the song with a characteristically open mind. In the studio, saxophonist Marcus Strickland contributed an on-the-spot horn arrangement with the sunny harmony of a South African choir.

As much as Williams writes in response to politics and current events, his compositions are a respectful celebration of the musical past, too. The driving samba rhythms of "Forecast" are an homage to the jazz fusion group Weather Report, with the tune's melody inspired by Wayne Shorter's "Over Shadow Hill Way." Williams's fluid fretless grooves on "Half Steppin'" recall Jaco Pastorius's "Teen Town."

Williams sees covers of pop tunes as a bestowal to the jazz canon. "I always like to contribute new repertoire to the jazz songbook," says Williams. "For me it's very important to shout out all the young, new songs coming out." His gift on this album is a moving instrumental version of Lianne La Havas' breakup ballad "Lost & Found." Guest trumpeter Christian Scott communicates the contained heartache of La Havas's song lyrics, with a lightly arranged string quartet adding the right amount of solace.

Coming of Age concludes with the sweeping title tune, a showcase for Williams's broad stylistic range. "I wanted 'Coming of Age' to feel big," he says. "I was thinking of it in movements, as a kind of mini-symphony." In the final section of "Coming of Age," Williams picks up a bow for the only time on the record, filtering the sound to other worldly but soulful effect. "The vibe I was going for at the end was Prince," Williams says. "I wanted it to feel sonically transformed, tripped out." It's an auspicious end to an accomplished sophomore recording, with Williams' bowed strings sauntering off into the stars to explore for the next album.

Whatever comes next for Ben Williams, it's sure to be as engaging as it is virtuosic. As an artist who's come of age, Williams' raw talent has evolved into musical grace, conviction, and power. He's a musician in meaningful dialogue with his band Sound Effect, with current events, with musical styles past and present, and finally, with his listeners.

"My favorite thing is when someone comes up to me who's heard my music and they're singing one of my tunes," Williams enthuses. "Humming a melody! That's the best feeling in the world, when one of my tunes has stuck in someone's head."

Weather Report's Heavy Weather was the ideal release, a popular and artistic success and for the same reasons. Released in 1977 just as the jazz-rock movement began to run out of steam, this landmark album proved that there was plenty of creative life left in the idiom. Infinite Search (Pure Pleasure)

With John McLaughlin, Herbie Hancock, Joe Henderson, and Jack DeJohnette, this group rivaled the best fusion bands of the day. It must have been an intimidating challenge for a young Czech bassist to lead such a group on his debut album as a frontman, especially since he composed five of the six tracks. Recorded in late 1969, roughly the same time as the historic Bitches Brew, and the year before Vitous began a stint with the innovative Weather Report, this was trend-setting fusion. It's produced by Herbie Mann, for whom Vitous played on such albums as Memphis Underground and Stone Flute.

    -Mark Allan/AMG

Miroslav's first album; superb even in the 21st century. If you are interested in finding out about the beginnings of 'jazz-rock fusion' this record is absolutely crucial. DeJohnette and Mclaughlin both had something to prove at the time and it shows. Vitous had won a scholarship to Boston's Berklee school of music but on this evidence, he didn't need it at all and probably scared the heck out of the teaching staff before he left to go with Herbie Mann, the occasional Miles gig, and the album sessions with Shorter and Zawinul that led to Weather Report. A brilliant and influential debut from a prodigious talent; buy this one!

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Macroscope

MACROSCOPE, the fifth album and Mack Avenue
debut by his adventurous trio The Nels Cline Singers,
    provides a measure of the long-running group's
    staggering range. Captivating and continually
surprising, the album finds the instrumental
trio with the slyly deceptive name veering
in one off-kilter direction only to suddenly be
overwhelmed by another drastic stylistic shift,
often within the space of a single tune.
    Serrated psychedelia becomes consumed
    by soulful Brasiliana, blissed-out electronica
    overwhelmed by garage-rock skronk. Then
there's the wholly unexpected "Red Before
Orange," where a howling Hendrix-inspired solo
suddenly erupts in the middle of a slick lounge-jazz
number, Cline unleashing the inner George
Benson that few of us expected he even had.

"The title MACROSCOPE speaks to the idea of
the mutt within," Cline says, "the fact that I'm
not in any one genre, and never have been.
I was a rock and roll kid, but after hearing
Coltrane and Miles and Weather Report, then
Indian music and Nigerian pop and that sort
of thing, there was no turning back. From that
point on, the idea of purism just was not possible.

    IV

BADBADBADNOTGOOD is the talented young quartet of Matthew Tavares on keys, Chester Hansen on bass, Alex Sowinski on drums & Leland Whitty on saxophone. They formed and became inseparable friends at Humber College's Music Performance program in 2011 and have been on a critically acclaimed, rule bending musical journey ever since.

BBNG took the music world by storm with their 2014 LP, III, a brash yet refined record of angular jazz improvisations, lush ballads, kraut rock, & futuristic hip-hop tinged rhythms which led to a couple years of touring the world & collaborating with some of the best and brightest artists around the globe.

The boys are back with the new album IV, their most impressive and highly anticipated project yet. IV continues their forward thinking progression, sounding something like a jam session in space between Can, John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock's Headhunters, Weather Report, Arthur Russell & MF DOOM. With tracks like Time Moves Slow featuring haunting vocals from Sam Herring of Future Islands, the syncopated groove of Lavender, a collaboration with Montreal based producer Kaytranada, the rumbling fusion build of Confessions Pt. II featuring Colin Stetson on the bass sax, Love which is highlighted with smokey left field raps from Mick Jenkins & the epic chords of Speaking Gently, IV is an exploration in post-genre virtuosity.

    Lay Me Down

Analogue Productions proudly brings you Lay Me Down, alternative rock /folk / pop diva Nancy Bryans stunning debut album of original songs touching on a variety of emotions from apocalyptic visions and the struggle of the inner soul to sensitively spun tales of love spinning out of control.

Nancy has been likened to Joni Mitchell and Sarah McLachlan but with an edge. Lay Me Down features an all-star group of musicians including producer /guitarist John Koenig, bassists Dan Schwartz (Tuesday Music Club, Linda Perry, Sheryl Crow and more), Jimmy Johnson (James Taylor and more) and Jerry Scheff (Elvis Costello, Roy Orbison, Elvis Presley and more), drummers Burleigh Drummond (Ambrosia) and Peter Erskine (Weather Report, Steely Dan and more) and songwriter, acoustic guitarist and vocalist John Bryan.

Nancy Bryan has a crystalline soprano and a mournful songwriting sensibility, highlighted by one of the most dynamic and timbrally pure recordings I've heard in a long time...the disc sounds naturally ambient, crisp and articulate.
