    Ramblin' Man

    180 Gram Vinyl

The Ramblin' Man is an album by Waylon Jennings, released in 1974. With a slightly more commercial sound than some of his previous records, The Ramblin' Man remained true to Jennings' outlaw country image and uncompromising musical vision.

The album was released at what was still considered to be the height of the outlaw movement in Country music, and this was reflected in its chart success, with the LP peaking at #3 on the Country charts. Jennings produced it himself, with Ray Pennington co-producing Oklahoma Sunshine and I'm a Ramblin' Man.

The album also includes a gutsy cover of the Allman Brothers' Midnight Rider, cementing Jennings' fearless reputation as a leader of the progressive Country sound.

    Dreaming My Dreams

Remastered by Rob Santos, Waylon Jennings classic 1975 album Dreaming My Dreams is being reissued through Fat Possum Records. The album was co-produced with Jack Clement and recorded at Glaser Sound Studio in Nashville, Tennessee, between February and July 1974 and released in June 1975. Topping the Billboard's Top Country albums chart and peaking at number forty-nine on Billboard's Top LPs & Tapes chart, it became Jennings' first album to be certified gold by the RIAA. To top things off, he was elected 1975's Male Vocalist of the Year by the Country Music Association.

Tony Glover of Rolling Stone described Jennings as an ultimate performer. Comparing his studio recordings with his live performances, Glover said Jennings' work in the studio seems to aim more for the midnight mind. Billboard praised Jennings' blend of Country music with other genres. The review said,...the show belongs to Jennings' powerfully distinctive voice and the excellent production of the artist and Jack Clement. It called the recordings a solid mix of ballad and rockers, some straight country and lots that cannot be classified, and said Jennings is one of the few artists whose voice is immediately recognizable. Stereo Review praised the album, called Jennings one of the rare good singers capable of playing his own lead guitar, and called the instrumental breaks witty and surprising. The American Home delivered a favorable review, saying the release features fine interpretive material. Allmusic rated the album with five stars out of five, calling it [Jennings'] best album since Honky Tonk Heroes, and one of the few of his prime outlaw period to deliver from beginning to end.

    That Lonesome Song

Jamey Johnson is a successful songwriter on Nashville's Music Row, who has authored hits by George Strait, Trace Adkins, George Jones and Joe Nichols. That Lonesome Song, Johnson's debut album as a performer, is a happy throwback to the outlaw country of the 1970s, with his gruff, character-filled vocals surrounded by a small, rocking combo including pedal steel, organ and fiddles. Rather than the polished soft rock of so much contemporary Nashville product, That Lonesome Song is a rough and ready honky-tonk album that compares favorably to Waylon Jennings and early Steve Earle. Highlights include Mowin' Down the Roses and the celebratory Between Jennings and Jones.

Live From Austin, TX (Waylon Jennings)

On-the-air since 1976, Austin City Limits has featured more than 500 different regional and internationally acclaimed artists on its stage, presenting the best of America's music from country, blues and folk to rock 'n' roll, bluegrass and zydeco.

Recorded on April 1, 1989 this performance by Waylon Jennings was no April Fools joke. This was the "new" Waylon, both personally and professionally. He had kicked a 20-year drug habit, split with RCA and signed a new deal with MCA Records.

He discovered a passion for songwriting, teamed with legendary producer Jimmy Bowen, and produced some of the best work of his 30-year-plus career. This ACL live set best captures the raw edge and driving urgency that pushed country music way past its Nashville boundaries starting in the mid-1970's.

Includes Waylon's definitive takes on Rodney Crowell's Ain't Living Long Like This, Elvis Presley's Suspicious Minds with wife Jessi Colter and Kris Kristoferson's Me and Bobby McGee along with his own classics Bob Wills Is Still the King and Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way.

    Honky Tonk Heroes

According to legend, it was at Willie Nelson's Fourth of July picnic when Waylon Jennings drunkenly promised a nobody named Billy Joe Shaver that he'd record a whole album of his songs. Apparently it wasn't until Shaver threatened physical violence on Jennings (in front of a Nashville studio full of people) that he finally made good on his promise, although Jennings had only recently been granted full artistic control by RCA. The result was a stunning achievement: 1973's Honky Tonk Heroes was the defining record of the anti-Nashville Outlaw movement--the term came after the album--and a cornerstone in country music history. Featuring bare-bones production and plainspoken, hard-nosed lyrics that celebrated personal freedoms and simple pleasures, the record was a far cry from the demure Nashville Sound. In each other, Jennings and Shaver had found a kindred spirit, and together they rewrote the country rulebook. - Marc Greilsamer

    Metamodern Sounds In Country Music

" he understands that good hooks hang on great rhythms
and every sob story requires an uppercut punch line."-The Washington Post

    " humbly fantastic."-SPIN

"...this is GOOD COUNTRY something I think any music lover
(country or not) can appreciate."-My Old Kentucky Blog

Sturgill Simpson isn't one to rest on his laurels, which is why, less than a year after the release of his critically acclaimed debut,
High Top Mountain, the singer-songwriter is coming out with his captivating and wholly unique sophomore album, Metamodern
Sounds in Country Music. The album title - an allusion to Ray Charles' groundbreaking 1962 record, Modern Sounds in Country and
Western Music -- hints at the psychedelic sounds found within, a departure from Simpson's first album, which drew comparisons
to the music of Waylon Jennings and Merle Haggard. "I think that there is a lot of room in country music for progression and sonic
oscillation, which is what I wanted to explore." Where some artists find inspiration from other music, Simpson found his in books,
devouring religious texts both ancient and modern, recent studies about discoveries in quantum physics and string theory, and
publications by Carl Sagan and Terence McKenna. He also drew upon French filmmaker Gaspar Noe's experimental drama Enter the
Void as he created murky, multi-textured soundscapes that incorporate elements of classic country, bluegrass, rock, and even a bit
of electronica, a genre that Simpson admits he has a "slight fetish" for.

Four Legendary Country Artists In One Super-group: Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings And Kris Kristofferson

Featuring The Hit-Singles Highwayman And Desperados Waiting For A Train

The Highwaymen were a country music super-group composed of four of the biggest outlaw country artists: Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and Kris Kristofferson. The band was active as a group between 1985 and 1995.

In 1984, Glen Campbell first played the song Highwayman for Johnny Cash. The four were all together in Switzerland doing a television special and decided that they should do a project together. While the four were recording their first album, Marty Stuart again played the song for Cash, saying it would be perfect for them-four verses, four souls, and four of them.

Campbell then played the song and the quartet had the name for their new super-group The Highwaymen, the name of their first album, Highwayman, and the name of their first single. The four thought it was a perfect name for them because they were always on the road and all four had the image of being outlaws in country music.

Both the album and the single eventually reached the top spot on the country music charts.

Their remake of Guy Clark's Desperados Waiting for a Train reached the Top 20. (Clark is frequently referred to as The Fifth Highwayman.)

The four original members starred together in the 1986 film Stagecoach.

    Early Morning Shakes

Loud and proud, they sing about what they know with a refreshing directness and clarity. Some call it rebel music, but it's more like everyday soul. Their songs are stories, with relatable characters and situations. Stories of celebration, of mourning,
of trials and triumph. Through the quality of these songs, and the band's undeniable power in concert and on record, Whiskey Myers has attracted a devoted army of outspoken fans who pack venues, sing the band's praises online, and continue to make them a growing word-of-mouth sensation. And now, they stand poised to unleash the thrilling Early Morning Shakes upon the world. Their latest full-length was recorded with noted producer Dave Cobb (whose credits include Jamey Johnson, Jason Isbell, and both Waylon and Shooter Jennings) and represents the culmination of years of dedication, experimentation, and refinement. Visceral and dynamic, the album's 12 songs encompass an impressive range of perspectives and emotions - while finding the band's musicianship honed to a razor's edge. And though Early Morning Shakes is a great step forward creatively, it's an organic one. As guitarist John Jeffers explains, "Staying true to ourselves and to our music has gotten us to the point we're at. We really wanted to continue on that same track."

    I'm Not The Devil

Cody Jinks was raised on country music but he cut his teeth on metal. "Metallica was king. They set the tone for me and I spent a good part of my youth wanting to be James Hetfield." After a dedicated stint as a frontman in a thrash metal band, Jinks willingly found himself back to where it all began. "My dad loved the outlaw country icons, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and Merle Haggard. That never ending consistency of incredible music growing up laid some very deep seeds. I'm mean, come on nothing better than mentally diving into 'The Hag' and metal when it comes time for me to write songs."

Always avoiding trends and ferociously choosing his direction was the only option from day one, even though that very path could have prevented success. "What is success if you can't wake up everyday being who you really are. In the end, that will catch up with you." Jinks has been tested countless times by his career choices. The better part of the last 15 years have included numerous empty bar rooms and a never ending financial loss. "Yeah, I've been pretty good at losing money. Not the greatest feeling in the world to be gone from home for long stretches of time, only to walk in the door broke. Luckily I've got a damn good woman in my life. She has stood by me with unmeasurable strength to say the least and it is an absolute fact that I seriously overplayed my hand when landing her."

His long, dark beard and endless array of tattoos are no fad. They unquestionably define Cody Jinks. His prototypical metal/hard rock band frontman look is not a well orchestrated image, but again, define Cody Jinks. Diving into to his album, I'm Not the Devil is the perpetual truth of who he is and where he has found himself at this point in his career. "I'm just glad that I ended up where I am now," Jinks said. "It makes complete sense that I'm at this place in my life. Country music found me when I was young and chased me down as I grew older"

Jinks' latest project is his deepest, darkest and most provocative album to date, with a metal common denominator, the apocalypse, running throughout the record. "It's a pretty scary time," Jinks said. "There are some evil people running things in the world. It hits me since I have a six and three-year old."
There's not a weightier song than the aptly titled "Heavy Load." It's the most apocalyptic song on the album but the dense cut, with a pretty violin break, is a gorgeous tune. The vocal hook grabs ears when Jinks croons "Train Jumps Tracks Some Time Ago/You Can't Root That Heavy Load." "That was the last song I wrote on the record," Jinks said. "I couldn't be happier how that one turned out."

"All You Can" features a pretty piano line and sobering wordplay. When Jinks belts out 'What Are You Living For," you can't help but think about the serious question posed in what is becoming an increasingly shallow existence. "I was really tired when I wrote that song," Jinks said. "We had been on the road for awhile. The bottom line is that if you're not helping people, you're not doing your job as a human being. It's time to quit feeling sorry for yourself and do something."
One of Jinks' favorite songs on the album is "The Way I Am," a cover of a Merle Haggard classic. "I love that song," Jinks says. "I wrapped it up just before Merle died. The song always resonated with me. I relate to that one since there are times I would rather be out fishing."

"No Words" is a stunner of a gritty, autobiographical love song, which is a throwback to how songs used to be written. It is a tuneful gem, inspired by reality. Jinks starts out dark as night. "My Whole View of the World has Changed/ I Guess that Comes with Age/I Don't Believe there is Good in Every Man Like I Did Back Then/I May Drink More Than I Should/You've Seen Me on the Floor/I Spent my Lifetime in this Cage I Built Around Me." But the song is actually a tip of the hat to his beloved wife of 19 years. "There Aint' No Words/ To Say How Much I Need You/With You Here/ You Make This Life I Lead Worth Living." "It's about my wife," Jinks says. "But the funny thing is that she doesn't like it. She thinks it sounds too sad."

With the title track "I'm Not the Devil," Jinks wakes us all up to the realities of mistakes and the heartfelt desire to be forgiven. "We are all guilty of mistakes and very guilty of pointing out the mistakes of others. Forgiveness feels so much better or so I think."

It's impressive how Jinks is getting his message across. Jinks utilizes space well in his songs. Notes aren't crammed in. Jinks lets his songs breathe. "After all I've experienced, I think I've matured," Jinks says. "I think you can hear it in the music. I've grown up."

Even though he still looks the part of the headbanger he was back in the day, he has moved on. "It's all for the best, Jinks says. "I'm where I was meant to be."

It's all about the music and the fans, who are the fuel that drives Jinks. "They come out night after night giving up hard earned money and precious time to see me play," Jinks says. " It's truly is amazing when you really think about it. The best way I can say thanks is by giving back with effort and gratitude."

Says LeAnn, This album was born out of the memories of when I first fell in love with country music and in reflecting, I realized that almost all of my favorite country songs from back then were sung by men. I am honored to take a step back in time and sing these songs from a woman's perspective and hopefully help reintroduce them to a new audience.

J.J. Cale: Rewind: The Unreleased Recordings

Time Life is very proud to present Rewind: Unreleased Recordings, a trove of previously unreleased songs recorded by American music icon J.J. Cale during his early and most influential years. Featuring vintage tracks from Cale's legendary tenures at Shelter Records and Mercury Records, Rewind is a remarkable collection that exemplifies J.J. Cale's distinctive, legendary style: laid-back guitar and almost whispered vocals with influences of rock 'n' roll, country, blues and jazz. Not only are Rewind's eight Cale-penned songs a time capsule of musical treasures, he also personally selected several covers to include. It's extremely rare for Cale to record another songwriter's material, making these songs particularly extraordinary. He puts his personal spin on Eric Clapton's Golden Ring, Leon Russell's My Cricket, Waylon Jennings' Waymore's Blues and Randy Newman's Rollin'.

    Out Among The Stars

Throughout his five decades in music, Johnny Cash was unwavering in his dedication to his sound and style. Starting with Sun Records in 1955 through his days at Columbia and beyond, Cash always knew exactly what he wanted to do and exactly how it should sound. Everything he did, all the music he created was definitively Johnny Cash.

By 1980, the business of country music had changed to incorporate sounds that were incongruous with Cash's. His signature blend of folk and that boom-chicka-boom beat was out of vogue amongst the slick string-laden countrypolitan sounds that had become popular. This shift left all-time greats like Cash in the odd place of being revered, but not selling albums. In one effort to enhance his commercial appeal, Columbia Records paired Cash with producer Billy Sherrill who was having major success with this new country sound. While Sherrill selected many of the songs, it was Cash's trademark sound that dominated. The sessions were nothing short of magic. Cash employed an expanded band, featuring a young Marty Stuart on guitar and fiddle as well as long-time duet partners June Carter Cash and Waylon Jennings. Much of what was recorded was locked away in the vault lost and not to be heard again. Until now.

Discovered in 2012, Out Among The Stars is truly a lost, previously unreleased Johnny Cash album. These aren't alternate takes or different versions of songs that you've heard. These are brand new songs to the Cash canon. Completed in 2013 by Johnny's only son John Carter Cash, Out Among The Stars is a pivotal Johnny Cash album lost in time, and now ready to become a classic.

Chris Shiflett And The Dead Peasants

Chris Shiflett & The Dead Peasants is a new project from Shiflett, already known as the lead guitarist for Foo Fighters and the frontman for Jackson United. Steeped in his love for classic country artists (Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings), rockabilly (Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran), and deep-rooted rock bands (The Rolling Stones, The Replacements), this new album is packed with soulful pedal steeland twang guitar-accented songs. The album highlights his talent and versatility not only as a skillful guitarist, but also as a songwriter. These infectious Americana-laced rock songs are some of the best hes penned, from the chiming keys and buoyant, ringing guitars of Get Along to the pedal steel- and mandolin-lined heartache of Bandaged, and from the spry, Old 97s-ian Baby, Let It Out to the rueful country swing of Death March.

Shiflett wrote the songs on Chris Shiflett & The Dead Peasants over the course of 2008-09, inspiration first striking when a friend asked him to perform at Orange Countys punk-rockabilly Hootenanny festival in 2008. After re-immersing himself in his Americana and old country music collection to prepare a short set and then playing a brief acoustic tour with friend Joey Cape of Lagwagon, he began writing what eventually became the new album. Recorded at the Foo Fighters Studio 606 in Los Angeles, CA, this past December and January, the core band on Chris Shiflett & The Dead Peasants is Shiflett (vocals, guitar), 606 house engineer John Lousteau (drums, in addition to engineering), and Derek Silverman (keyboards). The albums additional instrumentation was performed by an array of fine musicians, including Davey Faragher (Elvis Costello and The Imposters, Jenny Lewis, John Hiatt) on bass, Greg Leisz (Wilco, Lucinda Williams, Whiskeytown) on pedal steel, Stevie Blacke (Beck, Weezer, Colbie Caillat) on violin and mandolin, and Audra Mae on backing vocals.

    Detour

Cyndi Lauper's celebrated musical journey takes an unexpected southern turn on DETOUR, her 11th studio album, which finds the Grammy®, Emmy® and Tony®-winning singer-songwriter putting her signature spin on a dozen classic country songs.

DETOUR showcases Lauper's unmistakable voice on country classics from the '40s, '50s and '60s and features guest appearances from county music stars Vince Gill, Emmylou Harris, Alison Krauss, and Willie Nelson. Lauper recorded the album in Nashville alongside a band comprised of the city's top session players.

The album is Lauper's first for Sire Records (Rhino) and is executive produced by legendary Sire founder, Seymour Stein.

Lauper says recording a country album is something she's dreamed about for many years. Growing up, she recalls listening to singers like Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, and Wanda Jackson in her Aunt Gracie's kitchen. When I was a really young kid, country music was pop music, so this is what we grew up listening to. These songs are part of some of my earliest memories so it has been an absolute thrill to revisit them.

Lauper sounds right at home from the start, beginning with the album opener, Funnel Of Love, a track Wanda Jackson, the Queen of Rockabilly, recorded in 1960. Another highlight is the rollicking take on Heartaches By The Number, a country standard previously covered by everyone from George Jones to Waylon Jennings to Dwight Yoakum. DETOUR also features stunning covers of two classic Pasty Cline songs, Walkin' After Midnight and her #1 smash, I Fall To Pieces. Lauper says, I spent a lot of time in my room singing with Patsy. I had to sing a Patsy Cline song - or two - because her voice was like one of my girlfriends. That's how close I felt to her.

For the album, Lauper duets with several special guests, including country music royalty: Emmylou Harris (on the title track), Willie Nelson (Night Life, a song he wrote over 50 years ago), Vince Gill (Loretta Lynn and Conway Twitty's You're The Reason Our Kids Are Ugly) and Alison Krauss (Dolly Parton's Hard Candy Christmas. Jewel also makes an appearance on DETOUR, showcasing her prodigious yodeling skills on I Want To Be A Cowboy's Sweetheart, which was the first country song by a woman to sell one million copies.

    Fear Fun

Father John Misty is the nom-de-plume of Josh Tillman, who has been releasing solo albums since 2003 and who recently left Seattle's Fleet Foxes after playing drums from 2008-2011. Fear Fun consists of such disparate elements as Waylon Jennings, Harry Nilsson, Arthur Russell, and Physical Graffiti, often within the same song. Tillman's voice has never been better, while the music maintains a dark, mysterious yet playful quality. Country Club

In true honky tonk style Country Club is the bastard child of a drunken promise. A post show hang-out between X and the Knitters' John Doe and The Sadies produced the idea to join forces to make an album of country songs. Timeless sounds abound on Country Club driven by Does gorgeously rough-hewn vocals, the dueling thousand pound chops of the guitar-wielding Good brothers and The Sadies world class rhythm section of Mike Belitsky and Sean Dean. Classic tunes by Merle Haggard and Waylon Jennings stand along side corkers by Tammy Wynette and Roger Miller, all of them getting unique treatments by Doe and The Sadies. The album also features four originals; three from The Sadies and one courtesy of the timeless pairing of John Doe and Exene Cervenka. On Country Club John Doe and The Sadies find the perfect blend of the reverent and the experimental resulting in a slightly psychedelic brew that just might pass for straight if you're not lookin'.

    So You Wannabe An Outlaw

So You Wannabe an Outlaw, Earle's first album for Warner Bros. Records since 1997's El Corazón, explores his country songwriting roots and features collaborations with Willie Nelson, Johnny Bush, and Miranda Lambert.

"There's nothing 'retro' about this record," Earle says. "I'm just acknowledging where I'm coming from." So You Wannabe an Outlaw is the first recording he has made in Austin, TX. Earle has lived in New York City for the past decade. "Look, I'm always gonna be a Texan, no matter what I do," he says. "And I'm always going to be somebody who learned their craft in Nashville. It's who I am."

So You Wannabe an Outlaw is an homage to outlaw music and is dedicated to the late Waylon Jennings. "I was out to unapologetically 'channel' Waylon as best as I could," Earle says. "This record was all about me playing' on the back pick-up of a '66 Fender Telecaster on an entire record for the first time in my life. The vocal part of it is a little different. I certainly don't sound like Waylon Jennings. I moved to Nashville in November of 1974, and right after that Willie Nelson's Red Headed Stranger came out. I was around when Waylon was recording Dreaming My Dreams. Guitar Town (Earle's 1986 chart-topping, Grammy Award-winning debut album) wound up being kind of my version of those types of songs," Earle recalls.

Earle is backed on So You Wannabe an Outlaw by his long-time band The Dukes - guitarist Chris Masterson, fiddle player Eleanor Whitmore, bassist Kelly Looney, and new members drummer Brad Pemberton and pedal steel player Ricky Ray Jackson. The album was produced by Richard Bennett and recorded at Arlyn Studios in Austin.

    Live In Germany 2000

In this 2000 concert Emmylou Harris combined tasteful choices from her early repertoire with newer work, often her owncompositions, backed by the band she called Spyboy, which featured the hard-working guitarist and singer Buddy Miller. When Emmylou Harris arrived as a country radio artist in the mid 1970s, she had an immediate and intense impact on a movement toward greater authenticity in country that also included artists like Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings.

Nelson and Jennings came out of the Nashville industry and were breaking new ground in that industry, changing their looks and sounds to accommodate social and musical changes of the 1960s that much of Nashville country had explicitly opposed. Harris, however, came from outside, an emissary to commercial country from the 1960s folk and rock toward which Nashville mavericks were already leaning. With her dark, natural, hippie-ish beauty, her ethereally powerful soprano, and her fascination with the grittier roots of country music,Harris broke molds established for both women
and new artists in Nashville country.
