LION-WAX-9902xBill Evans Trio
Waltz For DebbyImport
Recorded live at The Village Vanguard in New York on June 25, 1961, this was the fourth album by the Bill Evans Trio, composed of pianist Bill Evans, bassist Scott LaFaro, and drummer Paul Motian. Scott LaFaro was one of the supreme jazz bassists, a virtuoso player whose playing changed the very conception of his instrument. This album unfortunately also represents one of LaFaro's last performances, recorded just days before his tragic death at the age of 25 by automobile accident. Interestingly the album also contains tracks that Evans had recorded prior to working with LaFaro, so that this recording provides a very accurate index of the bassist's great contribution to the trio.1. Grant Hart's first solo album of the 21st century is one of the best things he has ever done. The former Husker Du drummer and co-songwriter worked with the diverse cast of musicians from Godspeed You Black Emperor and Silver Mt. Zion on this new LP, Hot Wax, recorded in Montreal and Minneapolis. Grant on some of the some of the songs: the song Narcissus, Narcissus is my first attempt at combining ancient Greek mythology and American rock-a-billy. By merging those influences with an ice cream truck atmosphere I think I have found a style that defines this period of my career. You're the Reflection of the Moon on the Water is one of the most organic rock and roll songs that I have ever written. It's style owes a lot to my devotion for patti smith. It was inspired by a comment made by a monk during the selection process to find the next Panchen Lhama, who said of one candidate, he is the reflection of the moon on the water but he is not the moon. You're the Reflection of the Moon on the Water

"'Promises' might be jarringly summery for the time of year, with

"Contagious' aptly describes Bretzer's work. Each song's
instrumentation glows front to back, and never does he close the
door on his sensibilities. -Consequence of Sound
Waxing Romantic is the debut album from Canadian artist Travis
Bretzer. Hailing from Edmonton, Alberta, 24-year-old Bretzer has an
appropriately singular, off-beat take on guitar pop.
On Waxing Romantic, Travis has stepped up the production in a big
way, graduating from the bedroom to a full studio environment.
Recorded at Gary's Electric in Brooklyn and produced by Jorge
Elbrecht (of Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti and Lansing-Dreiden fame)
the new environment has allowed for Travis' songs to be taken to new,
fully-realized heights. The album also features a solid crew of players,
including members of Haunted Graffiti, James Richardson of MGMT
and Regal Degal's Josh da Costa, who was key in shaping drum
As the title indicates, Waxing Romantic is thematically concerned with
love. For Travis, the album reads like a storybook of the first couple of
years of his current relationship, with each song acting like a totem for
different events and moments. For this reason, the album is very
personal - it navigates the giddy and elated feelings of falling in love,
and the process of looking back and reflecting on it. In keeping with
the album's '70s pop mode, the lyrics are kept simple and sweet, but
Lead single "Promises" is built around a breezy, cascading guitar riff
and oozes a casual temperament. Warm slide guitars and fuzzy
power-pop riffs color the lofty melodies of "Lonely Heart". Elsewhere,
"Idle By" recalls the glistening guitar lines of Felt, and "Lady Red"
shows Travis doing his best scrubbed up, sophisticated pop song.1. Giving Up

Performance: Rockin' The FillmoreFeaturing Dead-Quiet Surfaces, This Wax Cathedral LP is Pressed at RTI, America's best record plant!
At the turn of the 1970s, Humble Pie rivaled Led Zeppelin as the biggest blues-rock band in the world. Performance: Rockin' the Fillmore demonstrates why. Capturing the group at the height of its powers, the live set smokes with outlandish energy, virtuosic interplay, rhythmic might, and blistering grooves. Guitarist Peter Frampton and vocalist Steve Marriott use their individual star power to complement rather than compete with one another, while the remainder of the band follows suit with similar intensity.
Soaring on the strength of Frampton's struck-by-lightning melodies and Marriott's soulful high-pitched deliveries, Humble Pie personifies classic 1970s hard rock throughout this set, defined by zealous reinventions of songs by Willie Dixon, Ray
Charles, and Dr. John. The group appropriates the classics as its own, with twin guitars harmonizing and harmonicas blowing, the original arrangements extended and reshaped, the band members pushing each other at every turn. That Frampton departed shortly after this San Francisco concert makes this album all the more memorable.
Remarkable, too, are the two epic workouts, one a 23-minute-plus jam on Dr. John's "I Walk on Gilded Splinters"-listen for the sound of the bottle dropping at the beginning-and the other an inventive perusal of Muddy Waters' "Rollin' Stone" that
closes with a boogie-based rendition of "My Babe." Frampton, Marriott, and Co. were never as good as they are here.

In The BeginningSeminal Early Beatles Recordings as Backing Band for Singer Tony Sheridan
Includes Rare Lennon/Harrison Instrumental "Cry for a Shadow" and Lennon-Led "Ain't She Sweet"
Gatefold LP with Rare Photos and Essay By Tony Sheridan
This is where the legend starts. Serving as the backing musicians for British rock singer Tony Sheridan, the Beatles turned out the most productive studio session of their formative years in June 1961 in Hamburg, a historical occasion documented on the seminal In the Beginning. Billed as the Beat Brothers, the group that evolved into the Fab Four counted original member Pete Best on drums and largely supplied Sheridan with rhythmic foundations for traditional cuts such as Ray Charles' "What'd I Say" and Lieber-Stoller's "Ruby Baby," as well as a batch of originals.
Most importantly, the date also produced the rare jazzy instrumental "Cry for a Shadow," the only Beatles track ever credited to Lennon-Harrison. Another essential gem is "Ain't She Sweet," an early 20th century hit covered here with lead vocals by John Lennon. Most importantly, this treasured LP affords music fans from around the world an early glimpse into the instrumental abilities and harmonic sound of a band that would, within two years, become the most important and popular ensemble in history.
Historians and collectors, take note: These performances occurred long before the quartet's similarly prized artifact Live at the Hamburg Club 1962, making this album the earliest official recording of the Beatles available.

I Want To See The Bright Lights TonightRanked #479 on Rolling Stone List of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time
Duo's First Collaboration Together Also Its Darkest, Loveliest
Faithfully Recreated Artwork Complete with LP Insert
Richard Thompson found a sympathetic companion in his then-new wife Linda Thompson, with whom he
collaborates on 1974's mystic I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight. While only his second solo record, the guitar virtuoso sounds well beyond his years on an effort simultaneously bathed in thematic darkness and illuminated with melodies that glisten with elegance, beauty, and joy. With her rich and transparent voice, and superb feel for nuance, Linda effortlessly pairs with her mate's consequential fare-not an easy task.
Indeed, Richard, just a few years removed from his tenure in iconic folk ensemble Fairport Convention, lays down several of the most memorable riffs and fills of his prolific career, accenting moody songs that address trappings of fame, circumstantial failings, and wry cynicism with unusual panache and grace. His allegorical skills are in full bloom on "The Calgary Cross" and metaphorical "The Great Valerio," the latter brought to peak via a hammered dulcimer and acoustic coda borrowed from Erik Satie.
In listening to I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight, one can't help be reminded of how cultural critic Greil Marcus described Thompson's self-sacrificial and surreal brilliance: "Sometimes Thompson seems to be singing from the plague years, following behind a cart full of corpses, laughing at the stupidity of human faith in one verse, cursing God with the next-but time stops. At any given moment, [he] steps forward playing both fool and executioner; he cuts off his own head and holds it up for the pleasure of the crowd, shaming it quiet."
And so it goes here.

Demons And Wizards
Limited Edition Green Colored LP from Wax Cathedral
Hit 1972 Album Remains Best Effort of British Band's Four-Decade-Plus Career
Imaginative Cover Art, Fantasy-Based Narratives, Dreamy Music Combine to Form Gothic-Accented Prog Classic
Fantastic Vinyl Pressing Rivals the Original
Magic spells, time-traveling futurists, sword-bearing horse riders, mountain-residing sorcerers, possessed journeyman, ominous warnings: Demons and Wizards lives up to its name as a collection of fantasy-based narratives rooted in dreamy, gothic-minded arrangements. Universally recognized as the finest effort of Uriah Heep's four-decade-plus career, the 1972 LP perseveres as a prog-rock landmark that influenced countless of bands ranging from Metallica to Styx to Blind Guardian.
The first album on which founding members Mick Box, Ken Hensley, and David Byron are joined by staple drummer Lee Kerslake, the Top 30-charting Demons and Wizards captivates and charms by way of taut songwriting and instrumental execution. Rather than function as the primary attraction, and be susceptible to mockery, make-believe lyrical themes augment a formidable assembly of folk-derived melodies, sharp medleys, and powerful hooks. Acoustic guitars weave webs of finite textures through which crackling, church-like organ passages and space-conscious bass lines maneuver, allowing songs to come across with an ethereal and powerful feel.
Glowing with old-fashioned tube-amp warmth, concise fare like "The Wizard," "Traveler In Time," and the hit "Easy Livin'" touches upon punchy garage-rock basics while epics such as "Circle of Hands" and closing "Paradise/The Spell"-a multi-part sonic excursion whose choral grace and spiritual glide evoke distant lands, misty cloud forests, and peaceful eternities-cling to a complex sensitivity underscored by deft piano notes. It's no wonder Uriah Heep would spend its lifespan trying to again capture such balance.

Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow
Group's 1975 Debut Includes Signature Man on a Silver Mountain and Heralds Beginning of Powerful Combination of Ritchie Blackmore and Ronnie James Dio
Wax Cathedral Reissue Comes Replete With Faithful Replication of Original Gatefold Sleeve; Pressed at RTI, America's Best Record Plant
In 1974, Ritchie Blackmore's bandmates in Deep Purple refused his request to cut a cover of Quatermass' Black Sheep of the Family. Demonstrating impressive commitment to the song, Blackmore set out to record it with the help of then-emerging vocalist Ronnie James Dio and members of his band Elf. To have enough material to release this as a single, Blackmore and Dio collaborated on Sixteenth Century Greensleeves. Pleased with the results, the two fleshed out a full album and Blackmore formally parted ways with Deep Purple. Blackmore and Dio named their new band after the location where they initially discussed their collaboration: the legendary Rainbow Bar and Grill on West Hollywood's Sunset Strip. Rainbow was born.
Drawing on medieval classical progressions for inspiration, Blackmore paired textured playing paired with Dio's fantastical lyrical imagery and inimitable vocals. The combination set Rainbow apart from its hard rock contemporaries. Featuring what would prove to be Rainbow's signature tune, Man on the Silver Mountain, Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow is a dynamic voyage. Blackmore's somber, melodic playing weaves a mystical tapestry over which Dio's tales of drawbridges, crossbows, and kings settle like a knight on his steed. This influential classic concludes with a flourish, as a cover of the Yardbirds' Gregorian chant-influenced instrumental Still I'm Sad proves a perfect pulpit for Blackmore's rhapsody-like soloing.

Perfect StrangersFeaturing Dead-Quiet Surfaces
This Wax Cathedral LP is Pressed at RTI, America's Best Record Plant!
Long before reunions became big-money pursuits, the key members of Deep Purple put aside differences that caused them to split in 1973 and, bowing to public demand, reformed for their first album in 11 years and a subsequent blockbuster tour. While the record's title cleverly acknowledges the long time the musicians had spent apart, everything about the LP confirms the inimitable blend of creative chemistry, crafty songwriting, and trademark skills shared by these five players.
All the hallmark traits from Deep Purple's golden era (1970-1973) are on display throughout this platinum comeback affair, which has aged much better than most mid-80s efforts in terms of sound, performance, and content. At times mystical,
aggressive, and dramatic, Perfect Strangers leaves a lasting impression courtesy of Ian Gillan's leather-lunged vocal range, Roger Glover's self-assured bass lines, Ian Paice's titanium-tough drumming, and the trade-off soloing between the wizardlike,
vibrato-emboldened guitar playing of Ritchie Blackmore and voodoo-casting organ spells of Jon Lord.
Compositions such as the hit single "Knocking at Your Back Door," hook-laden title track, and racing "A Gypsy's Kiss" could be deemed products of a supergroup, but calling them so shortchanges the artistry, as the posturing asides and attention-getting episodes common to such projects aren't here. Perfect Strangers is hard, heavy purity, the last album Deep Purple crafted of its kind-and one that stands right up to the ensemble's classic Fireball and Machine Head.1. Knocking At Your Back Door

FearNearly five years into his solo career, Velvet Underground alum John Cale headed to the studio to reinvent himself yet again in 1974. The result, Fear, became the first of a trio of eclectic albums all released in a period spanning just inside 14 months for Island Records. On this, his fourth solo release and first collaboration with Roxy Music's Phil Manzanera and Brian Eno, Cale changes form with every composition.
Back on domestic vinyl for the first time in decades, this RTI-pressed edition of Fear is cut at Mobile Fidelity by in-house engineer Krieg Wunderlich and features stunning sonics. Quiet surfaces, faithful artwork, and the opportunity to hear Cale's incisive fare unfold amidst wide soundstages and black backgrounds-not to mention the intense content within-make this Wax Cathedral LP a must for music aficionados.
A smooth, textured departure from the clamor of the Velvets but a darker, more rage-filled concoction than Cale's 1973 set Paris 1919, Fear amazes with boundless range. Whether he's channeling the sweet, gentle Doctor Jekyll in symphonic ballads like "Emily and Ship of Fools, sharpening his teeth as the demented Mr. Hyde in the graffiti-strewn city-rock anthem "Gun, or thrilling with morbid joy in Fear is a Man's Best Friend," Cale effortlessly metamorphoses from one persona to the next. The whimsical Man Who Couldn't Afford to Orgy bounces into the earnest, misty You Know Me More than I Know."
In the background, Manzanera's guitar buzzes and stings as Eno sculpts a changing landscape of textures with his synthesizer. Infused with sarcastic or cynical lyrics, sweeping melodies, and a wide-eyed sense of exploration, Fear spins rage into beauty and back again.

Helen of TroyTo his chagrin, John Cale's record label released his unfinished demo tapes while he was busy producing Patti Smith's groundbreaking Horses. But to his surprise, the resulting album, Helen of Troy, is considered the most stylistically cohesive of the eclectic Island Trilogy, the trio of albums Cale recorded for Island Records during the course of 1974-75. Featuring Brian Eno's lithe synthesizer, Phil Collins' expert drumming, and Cale's manic streetwise songwriting, Helen of Troy delivers more sophistication than most final cuts, and cuts deeper in its roughness.
Back on domestic vinyl for the first time in decades, this RTI-pressed edition of Helen of Troy is cut at Mobile Fidelity by in-house engineer Krieg Wunderlich and features stunning sonics. Quiet surfaces, faithful artwork, and the opportunity to hear Cale's engaging fare unfold amidst wide soundstages and black backgrounds-not to mention the moody content within-make this Wax Cathedral LP a must for music aficionados.
From the celestial opening strains of My Maria, which sounds in places like a hymn, to the teeth-gnashing Sudden Death, Cale shows us heaven, hell, and the life in between. Employing a cocktail of wild experimentation, tonal versatility, and range of emotion, Cale's compositions whip from soaring serenades like I Keep a Close Watch to the unhinged, wild-eyed Leaving It Up to You (pulled from the original release due to its reference to the murder of Sharon Tate) to the soulful, surf-derived China Sea. Eno's synthesizer casts love spells and shadows while Chris Spedding's guitar drills bluesy, ragged holes through every composition. A tormented, sinister cover of the Modern Lovers' Pablo Picasso (Cale produced the Lovers' debut) shows what you get when you replace Jonathan Richman's dreamy smile with Cale's bared teeth.
Although we'll never know what the one-time Velvet Underground cohort had in mind for the finished product, with its labyrinthine arrangements, theatrical spontaneity, and primal rawness, Helen of Troy is a gem that's better unpolished.1. My Maria

Slow DazzleIn 1975, mad scientist and Velvet Underground alum John Cale returned to the lab to record another experiment. Slow Dazzle, his fifth solo album and second collaboration with Roxy Music's Brian Eno and Phil Manzanera, dissects rock and avant-garde, hacks the limbs off of pop and jazz, and fuses the styles together into a limber, impassioned creation.
Back on domestic vinyl for the first time in decades, this RTI-pressed edition of Slow Dazzle is cut at Mobile Fidelity by in-house engineer Krieg Wunderlich and features stunning sonics. Quiet surfaces, faithful artwork, and the opportunity to hear Cale's incisive fare unfold amidst wide soundstages and black backgrounds-not to mention the emotionally unsettling content within-make this Wax Cathedral LP a must for music aficionados.
Sometimes jaunty and beer-soaked, sometimes maniacally spitting into the microphone about killing his wife's lover, sometimes despairing, sometimes sweet, Cale holds forth with schizophrenic authority. Manzanera's sordid guitar dirges ambidextrously switch to cheerful riffs as Eno's synthesizer rubber-bands its way through sunshine and smoke-machine fog. Chris Thomas, who recorded with the Beatles and engineered albums for Pink Floyd and the Sex Pistols, throws haunted violin and dissonant electric piano into the formula.
Whether he's heaping neon sleaze atop earnest surf harmonies in an ode to the Beach Boys' Brian Wilson (Mr. Wilson), lulling you into a blurred, easy-listening trance (Ski Patrol, I'm Not the Loving Kind), or growling a pre-goth era cover of Elvis' Heartbreak Hotel" with mascara-running intensity, Cale delivers an elastic range of artistry. Ditties like "Dirty Ass Rock 'N' Roll" and "Guts" place psychopath tendencies into the body of a catchy pop song, turn up the electricity, twitch, and grab.
By all means, Cale's experiment was a success. Slow Dazzle is alive.1. Mr. Wilson

The Magician's Birthday
Influential 1972 Record Delves into Moody Fantasy Worlds, Thematically Bookends British Band's Demons and Wizards
Organic Production and Tonal Shadings Exude Revered Early 70s Hi-Fi Sound: Reissue Faithfully Replicates Original Gatefold Sleeve and Pressed on Colored Vinyl
Loosely based on a story by Ken Hensley, The Magician's Birthday continues Uriah Heep's adventurous immersion into fantasy worlds at a time when similarly sci-fi pop-culture releases such as Star Wars and Dungeons and Dragons were still years away. Influential in concept, appearance, and sound, the 1972 record remains a thematic bookend to Demons and Wizards, released the same year and, akin to this set, recognized as the group's high-water mark. Both records resonate with a newfound vitality in a 21st century engrossed in a resurgence in comic-book superheroes and gothic tales.
Pursuing a more streamlined, cleaner sound that scales back harder arrangements and accentuates prog-rock and blues elements, the British band accentuates texture and hooks throughout. Uriah Heep attains a dynamic balance between brief, punchy fare (Spider Woman) and spooky, cosmic piano balladry (Echoes in the Dark), with guitarist Mick Box supplying versatile leads and underlying narratives with exceptional tonal shadings. Space-rock synthesizers and subtle xylophones help in further setting the moods. The Magician's Birthday skirts the parody that befell many albums that copied its formula by way of fine-tuned songwriting, David Byron's passionate singing, and cohesive playing. Groups ranging from Iron Maiden to Emerson Lake and Palmer drew from its example.
Boasting arguably the strongest production of Uriah Heep's career, the record exudes early 70s warmth and organic sonics. As soon as your turntable's needle hits the grooves, an era renowned for wood-encased receivers, tube amplifiers, and vintage instruments will emerge in front of your eyes. Whether it's the whirring organ and eerie frequency effects on the crunchy FM radio favorite Sweet Lorraine or the ringing bells on the epic multi-part title track, The Magician's Birthday pulls you into its spell with ethereal power and supernatural charm.
Complete with a faithful replication of the original gatefold sleeve, and replete with dead-quiet surfaces, this Wax Cathedral reissue is pressed at RTI, America's best record plant. Better still, it's on colored vinyl, to boot!1. Sunrise
