    I'm Not Your Man

It's amazing how the floodgates open when you shut out all the internal and external noise, stop pandering to stereotype, cease listening to your anxieties, and disregard the compartment society has built for you. I'm Not Your Man, the Charlie Andrew(Alt-J, Rae Morris)-produced second album from Marika Hackman, begins with an impromptu hearty laugh. It's not the sound of silliness; it's the sound of liberation, spontaneity, and joy. 24-year-old Hackman is feeling more herself than ever. Life isn't necessarily funnier or happier, but when there's cause for a joke or a big ballsy statement, she's not holding back anymore.

The album took almost 18 months to complete, during which time Hackman switched to a new manager and a new label, transitions that yielded new avenues for exploration, a lot of time, and a lot of distance - mainly, she insists, from self-imposed boundaries. "I used to be very self-conscious," explains Hackman. "If something sounded a bit too pop or like I'd heard it before I'd mold it into something different. This time around I thought, 'fuck it, I'll just let it flow.'"

The results of this semi-anarchic approach are evident in the grungier, catchier sonics of I'm Not Your Man, and the lyrics, which reveal an unhinged and shamelessly free Hackman. There's an open-ended nature to the lyrics, which delve into femininity, sex and sexual identity, millennial ennui, the pressures of living in a social media bubble, and the perils of being young in a fast-paced industry. "The record's all about female relationships, romance, and breakdowns, but there's also a dim worldview going on. 'I'm Not Your Man' can either mean 'I'm not your man, I'm your woman,' or it can mean 'I'm not a part of this.'"

Hackman cranked up the knobs in the studio, turning away from the quieter sounds of her past to realize her teenage fantasy of fronting a raucous band. "I wanted to let rip and lose control. When I was younger I wasn't looking at Joni Mitchell. I was looking at Nirvana thinking, 'I wanna be like that!'" To channel this feral female energy, Hackman recruited London quartet The Big Moon as her backing band. The results are a dynamic, multi-genre album tied together by razor-sharp wit. The sounds span from Cate Le Bon weirdness to Warpaint dirge jams to straight-up Britpop choruses. "People were saying it was a mash-up between Radiohead, Blondie, and The Cure," laughs Hackman, self-mockingly. "I can't wait to see the reaction," she says. "That's the thrill of reinventing yourself. I might piss off a lot of die-hard folky fans but this is still my brain, it's still my world, and I'm gonna create it how I want."

Despite its predecessor selling more copies, Warpaint debuted 15 spots higher in the United States.

    Every Now & Then

Jagwar Ma returns with their second album Every Now & Then.

The Sydney-formed band came together for sessions across a handful of studios and locations in Australia, the UK, and France to shake up an altogether inspired new offering. Full of spirit and exploding with the energy of new ideas, Every Now & Then is formed from the building blocks of a myriad of sonic touchstones upon which Jono Ma and Gabriel Winterfield concoct a heady, uplifting brew that very much owns it's own space on the spectrum.

Singer/guitarist Gabriel Winterfield and multi-instrumentalist Jono Ma originally joined forces at the turn of the decade, having reached an impasse with their previous bands. Liberated, they instantly felt their horizons opening up, culminating in the kaleidoscopic dub-pop of Jagwar Ma's 2013 debut album Howlin. Augmented by their old Sydney friend Jack Freeman on bass and backing vocals they set about creating their own infectious groove with their increasingly powerful live show.

After almost three years of touring the world (including tours with Foals, The xx, and Tame Impala) the band returned to Australia to write and begin recording at Sonar studios in Sydney. With the basis of the album written, the band headed back to La Briche near Tours in rural France, where they had recorded their debut in a self-built studio on a friend's partly-renovated farm, before returning to London to record drum sessions with Warpaint's Stella Mozgawa and James Ford and finishing mixing with old friend Ewan Pearson in their new shared Tottenham studio The Bunker II.

Jono is a student of the studio in the Jagwar Ma camp, and on Every Now & Then his production hand constructs the richly singular sonic world each track inhabits. The record is littered with surprising selections yet maintains an ebb and flow that echoes that of a day in coastal Australia. 'Repetition invites participation' and the composition of Every Now & Then is a testament to the turn of phrase, subtly seducing with loose-limbed sinewy grooves on loop.

Entrancing incantations on romantic love, truth and courage come courtesy of co-songwriter and lead vocalist Gabriel. Lush melody from left field, grungey phrasing and pagan shapes, Winterfield flows in tandem with each song's unique sea of sound. "Can we be real?"

Classic bass lines, jangly guitar parts and Paul's Boutique-inspired loops bounce off elements of synth-pop and encounter bass heavy experiments redolent of Blanck Mass and other elements of the Norwegian electronic onslaught together with swelling psychedelic choruses, reminiscent of summer-kissed Ocean Rain-period Bunnymen, exploding into melodic, sun-soaked wig-outs.

At heart, a studio album, designed for lone listening on headphones but as a shared experience is where it will really come to life. Their live appearances for Howlin' were electric and key elements of Every Now & Then took on extra shape while touring Europe with fellow compatriots Tame Impala, successfully working out the structure of tracks in front of arena crowds.

Every Now & Then deftly covers a broad expanse of sound and mood. Say What You Feel gradually envelopes with its tireless drive and shapeshifting form to an ecstatic peak before Loose Ends cools down the pace with dubbed, fractured melodies. Give Me A Reason flips from muted funk pop to percolating, percussive house before seamlessly transitioning into a gyrating, teched up club tool. The glorious dynamism continues with Ordinary's quantum leap chorus, while High Rotation possesses a sinister spirit, a chuggy druggy groove and compelling, cultish chanting. Colour Of Paradise closes out the record, a bittersweet beauty of surf melodies and euphoric synths - 'searching through every grain of sand', lifting off and leaving the earthly territory behind completely for a deeper, more celestial, spacey place.

From underwater liquid rhythm through to joyous, floating in the clouds sky highs, Every Now & Then is Jagwar Ma's cathartic new injection we endeavor you to dose up on.

    Warpaint

WARPAINT is a Los Angeles based quartet comprised of Emily Kokal
(vocals/guitar), Jenny Lee Lindberg (bass/vocals), Theresa Wayman
(guitar/vocals), and Stella Mozgawa (drums). To say that this follow-up
is "highly anticipated" is an understatement, considering the reception
that their debut received when it was released at the end of 2010, and
the excitement at their recent sold-out shows in New York and LA. They
are currently also featured in a Calvin Klein jeans campaign which has
received 2 million views via the YouTube ad alone.

Warpaint was recorded and mixed by Flood, aside from two songs that
were mixed by Nigel Godrich. The album was conceived after some truly
inspirational writing and recording sessions that took place in The
Joshua Tree late last year. The band was joined there by visionary
director Chris Cunningham, who has partnered with them for many of the
album visuals including the cover. He spent two years filming and photographing the band as they made new music.

Warpaint is a well-oiled machine. They weave intricate guitar lines,
hypnotic vocals and driving post punk rhythms into gorgeous, sprawling
songs that skirt the line between psychedelia and intimacy. Both live
and on record, Warpaint sound like they're channeling something truly
otherworldly, and mystical. They are also a band that truly enjoys playing
together. Emily and Theresa have been friends since they were kids, and
the bond that the four of them have is truly special.

    The Fool

Warpaint, the all-girl quartet from Los Angeles, weave intricate guitar lines, hypnotic vocals and driving post punk rhythms into gorgeous, sprawling songs that skirt the line between psychedelia and intimacy. Both live and on record, Warpaint sound like theyre channelling something truly otherworldly, mystical. The Fool is their utterly mesmeric debut full-length album on Rough Trade Records and follows-up 2009s Exquisite Corpse EP.

The Fool was produced and mixed by Tom Biller (Liars, Jon Brion, Sean Lennon) in Los Angeles, with further mixes from Andrew Weatherall (Bjork, My Bloody Valentine, Primal Scream) and Adam Samuels (John Frusciante, Daniel Lanois). Warpaint is Emily Kokal (vocals/guitar), Theresa Wayman (guitar/vocals), Jenny Lee Lindberg (bass/vocals) and Stella Mozgawa (drums).

    Rabbit Habits

Hailing from Philadelphia, Man Man are an astonishingly original quintet who have found the perfect berth for their gypsy-swamp-rock-carny-soul-Viking-vaudeville-punk collective. Man Man bring their incomparable vision of pop music to their ANTI- debut Rabbit Habits, finally recording an album that matches the fierce energy of their non-stop live shows, which utilize a variety of more traditional musical instruments like the accordion, the Moog keyboard and the xylophone, as well as incorporating often overlooked noisemakers like soup pots, shoes, a fire extinguisher and squeaky toys. With a live following that sells out clubs coast to coast, and a kinetic stage presence that finds band members, dressed in white jumpsuits and warpaint, constantly switching instruments, Man Man are a musical contagion waiting to happen.

    Wonder Where We Land

Since the release of his debut album in 2011, SBTRKT has cemented his
role as one of the most acclaimed electronic artists and performers around.
What began as praise in his hometown of London has now reached to
    every corner of the globe.

Wonder Where We Land follows his now critically acclaimed eponymous
debut album and a recent series of six instrumentals called Transitions -
which existed to join the creative dots between the first and second albums.

Album sessions began on Osea Island, a tidal island in an estuary off
Essex where the winding coastal road is submerged for 8 in every 12
hours. It was here that SBTRKT began the early stages of the recording
process, inviting a host of collaborators to join him record throughout the
night free from any distraction - the tapes continuously rolled, animation
was projected on the walls and every creative impulse was documented.
Inspired by this new 'open' method of recording, and ready to focus his
new found ideas into more intense sessions, SBTRKT visited America armed
with a wish list of collaborators to track down. It was here he worked with
newcomer Raury, Ezra Koenig from Vampire Weekend, A$AP Ferg and
    Emily Kokal from Warpaint.

    The Hunt Begins

2007: The cover art of the first record Sacred Bones ever released depicted an
androgynous wild banshee wearing warpaint, clad all in leather and animal
bones, holding a sacrificial knife pointed at the sky. This debut single was The
Hunt's lone statement. The songs were a visceral pulsation, etched in echo.
The band appeared veiled in black scarves, painted faces bringing in devotees of
the waves of old: post punk, darkwave, deathrock and the like. The sick fiends
that followed, followed to the end; as bright as their flame shone, as dark was
their demise. London, structure fires, and mental institutions all played a part in
the downfall of the originators of 21st century redskin darkwave.

2009: After multiple tumultuous attempts at recording a full length The Hunt
decamped to their collective hometown, Boston, to record the ultimate
document of their time on earth. Buses begat buses, couches begat couches, and
slowly the songs began to come together as they should have all these passing
years. On the edge of perfection their time was cut short and this document sat
for years, untouched by human hands.

2013: The Hunt lives on. In honor of both the first and one hundredth release,
we will finally see and hear the toils of New York's most enigmatic post
punk band of recent. Ian Danger, percussive wunderkind; Mike O'Brien, whose
    four strings drew blood nightly; Christian Kount, master of negative space;
and Jasper McGandy, the man who's hopes for a darker future led them towards
a reality we only now have the honor of witnessing. After all these years the
time has come. The Hunt Begins.

    Grace & Lies

On the surface, the two concepts Grace and Lies couldn't seem more different. One of them restores, the other ruins. One of them forgives, the other deceives. But to hear Kim Krans, frontwoman for Family Band, tell it, the two aren't opposed, they're intertwined. Grace and Lies are two characters I envisioned last summer, she says, by way of explaining the haunting title track on the group's second record. I couldn't get them out of my head. I saw them in a field behind our cabin, singing and slow dancing, like ghosts, sort of. They're the rulers of beauty and false promises. And we all fall for them from time to time."

And therein lies the beautiful dichotomy of Family Band. A collaboration between visual-artist-turned-singer Kim Krans and her husband, onetime heavy-metal guitarist Jonny Ollsin (Children, S.T.R.E.E.T.S.), the merging of the couple's sensibilities makes for music that's simultaneously elegant and visceral. Their songs are as stark as bare trees in winter, Krans' baleful alto swooping mournfully over Ollsin's glimmering guitar like a black crow against a grey sky.

As its title implies Grace & Lies is equal parts light and shadow, evoking the mystery and terror of early Cat Power, the ghostly aura of Warpaint, with whom Family Band toured in 2011, and the hushed longing of prime-era Cowboy Junkies. Though they explored similar territory, both sonically and lyrically, on their self-released debut, Miller Path, on Grace their canvas is wider, the greys lusher, the blacks deeper. Assisted by bass and lapsteel player Scott Hirsch (Hiss Golden Messenger), the couple has made a record that boldly confronts life's darker questions.

Miller Path was recorded mostly at our cabin upstate, while Jonny was busy with his metal band and I was focused on my visual arts career, Krans explains. It was my first time recording music and I didn't know how to steer the wheel. I didn't even know what the wheel was. But with Grace & Lies, we all decided what the overarching atmosphere and mood of the record should be. I made big drawings of each song in the control room, with all the parts and changes illustrated, and we built those visions with sound.

That meticulous planning is evident throughout. Night Song revolves around a single, dazzling guitar riff that spirals like stars in the night sky; Ride builds steadily to an ominous, spectacular finale, timpanis booming and guitars gathering like storm clouds in a clear sky; and Again, which boasts production and instrumental work by Dan Rossen of Grizzly Bear, surges forward, a roaring river beneath a sheet of ice. Grace & Lies is a document of a band staring down life's larger riddles: love, death, loss and deceit.
