By the time he recorded what is universally regarded as his finest album in 1964, Larry Young had developed his own innovative style on Hammond B-3 organ and had proved that the instrument could be used for so much more than soul jazz. He was light years ahead of his contemporaries, and fully established himself as the most forward thinking B-3 organ player of the Coltrane era. Teaming with a superb cast consisting of trumpet sensation Woody Shaw (who contributed three of the six selections), Joe Henderson and Elvin Jones, Larry Young inspires each of these young giants to some of the finest performances of their lives. Unity, which still sounds as contemporary as the day it was recorded, is an essential post-bop classic!

UnityOn Unity, jazz organist Larry Young began to display some of the angular drive that made him a natural for the jazz-rock explosion to come barely four years later. While about as far from the groove jazz of Jimmy Smith as you could get, Young hadn't made the complete leap into freeform jazz-rock either. Here he finds himself in very distinguished company: drummer Elvin Jones, trumpeter Woody Shaw, and saxman Joe Henderson. Young was clearly taken by the explorations of saxophonists Coleman and Coltrane, as well as the tonal expressionism put in place by Sonny Rollins and the hard-edged modal music of Miles Davis and his young quintet.1. Unity Is Power (Awaiting Repress)One of reggae's most influential forces, Joe Higgs
truly lived a life of contradiction - hence the title of his first album. The man who taught the nucleus of the Wailers the basic principles of singing, he spent years teaching Bob Marley what sound consciousness was about. Tosh too. It has often been said of Joe that he was ahead of time, which stifled him in terms of popular acceptance. His sprinkling of triumphs were enough to earn him the sobriquet of "The Father of Reggae Music" while living mostly in poverty.1. Devotion

Last year, for the first time since 1980, guitarist Pat Metheny recorded with a band that highlighted tenor saxophone. Unity Band, which went on to win Metheny his 20th Grammy Award, featured Chris Potter on sax and bass clarinet, longtime collaborator Antonio Sanchez on drums, and Ben Williams on bass. Now, Metheny has added another musician, multi-instrumentalist Giulio Carmassi, and christened the ensemble Pat Metheny Unity Group. The Group's first record, Kin (<-->), will be released in 2014 on Nonesuch.
Metheny says of this new Group, The core quartet of Chris, Ben, Antonio, and me played more than 100 concerts over the year that followed the release of our Unity Band record. Over the course of that period, the band became one of those rare combinations of players where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts; it gelled in every way, and that just seemed to beg for expansion and further research. He continues, Simultaneously, I had been itching to write using more of a lush and orchestrated kind of concept that went beyond the sonic limits of what a straight-ahead quartet might invoke. But I really didn't want to lose the energy, focus, and intensity of what this band had developed. I wanted to take it further. If the first Unity Band record was a thoughtful, black and white documentary of four musicians in a recording studio playing, this record is more like the Technicolor, IMAX version of what a band like this could be-but with that hardcore thing still sitting right in the middle of it all.

Puppet Strings"Rock and roll is very much alive and well on this album," says Brett Scallions, the frontman of Fuel. The band's new album Puppet Strings marks its first with Scallions in 10 years.
The sound is pure, anthemic rock inspired by the punk records of the band's youth (the heavy, driving "Yeah" and first single, "Soul to Preach To") and the Memphis blues sound that taps into Brett's Tennessee roots ("Hey Mama"). "We were simply trying to write the best songs we possibly could, " adds Brett, who wrote the album with guitarist Andy Andersson and bassist Brad Stewart, formerly of Shinedown. "With Andy and Brad, I found the unity I'd always craved."
During his time away from Fuel, Brett continued to write music and toured with Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger of the Doors. "When I left Fuel I was miserable. It didn't feel much like a band anymore. Unity was nonexistent. Singing with Ray and Robby opened a whole new perspective on music and life for me. I realized how much music is truly all about freedom and not being confined to formats or singles."

The TrinityWorking with some of the hottest young producers on the Jamaican dancehall circuit - Steven Lenky Marsden, Don Corleone, Renaissance Crew, and Snowcone, to name a few - Sean spent three years completing his third album THE TRINITY. And although many of the biggest names in hip-hop wanted to work with him, Sean is proud to say that it was all done right here in the Third World. Hence trinity, a spiritual concept that signifies a unity of three in one. It's been said that three is a magic number, and THE TRINITY is definitely a blessed piece of work. In Praise Of LearningImport
A landmark in the history of European experimental rock, the third Henry Cow work, originally released on Virgin in 1975, represents the second act of joined forces between Cow and Slapp Happy, and the first fully integrated appearance of Dagmar Krause. In Praise Of Learning is a unique piece of art, showing perfect unity of political content, with rock complexity, extended song form and free noise explorations.
The album features an impressive array of original compositions, including Tim Hodgkinsons masterwork Living In The Heart of the Beast and Fred Friths Beautiful As The Moon-Terrible As An Army With Banners. An extraordinary set of music, performed by an amazingly rich line up of Dagmar Krause, Lindsay Cooper, Fred Frith, Tim Hodgkinson, John Greaves, Chris Cutler, Peter Blegvad and Anthony Moore, not to mention guest appearances by the great Mongezi Feza, Geoff Leigh and Phil Becque. Another LanguageSince 2004, This Will Destroy You has been forging some of the world's most brutal, dynamic, and precariously visceral instrumental rock. In addition to a vigorous tour schedule, their celebrated discography and critically renowned soundtrack work for feature films and documentaries have earned them a sizable and fervent international following. Another Language, TWDY's fourth full length LP, marks their euphonious return from a prolonged vacuous dark period that threatened to break both the band and the members themselves. Rather than be stifled by their experience TWDY were atomized and subsequently made anew, emerging with a revived energy and reinforced sense of solidarity. As a result, Another Language captures the band at its most potent, honed, and utterly powerful form yet, displaying an edified unity and graduated sense of song-writing, tonal complexity, and studio prowess.1. Dust Bowl Ballads (Pre-Order)180-Gram Audiophile Vinyl
Includes Insert With Liner Notes, Background Story, And Exclusive Pictures
This Is The Album That Inspired Dylan, Cash, And Springsteen
Woodrow Guthrie was an American singer-songwriter who is regarded as one of the most significant figures in American folk music; his songs have inspired several generations both politically and musically.
Dust Bowl Ballads was the most successful album Woody Guthrie made. Not only did it gain him public acclaim, but these songs and performances possess extraordinary unity. That unity comes from Guthrie discovering within himself the voice of one man who arises out of a mass of people who have been dislocated from their homes and much of what is familiar. It comes from telling a tale that travels from the first great dust storm that covered the southwest in darkness and terror to the very gates of a Garden of Eden, a paradise for you and for me.
Songs like 'The Great Dust Storm and Dust Bowl Blues are exact descriptions of what happened when a massive drought occurred in the middle of the Great Depression, uprooting millions of humans from lives and livelihoods they had thought eternal.
Woody Guthrie became the voice of his people and in a way that remains intelligible many years later. He set a standard to which many of today's best songwriters still aspire. Like Dylan, Springsteen, and KRS-One, he gave his listeners stories and characters that help them better understand themselves. So these songs are not only historical; they are history itself, history being that which links present to future.1. The Great Dust Storm (Dust Storm Disaster)

KnoxvilleChristian Fennesz, David Daniell and Tony Buck (The Necks) are three of the most recognized and respected players in experimental music from around the globe. In 2009 the Big Ears Festival in Knoxville, TN brought the three together and encouraged them to collaborate. The aptly named Knoxville documents the results of that first collaboration. Recorded on February 7th, 2009, Fennesz (guitar and electronics), Daniell (guitar) and Buck (drums) channel their collective energies into a darkly atmospheric piece of music that ebbs and flows with remarkable cohesion.
Minimalist drum passages scatter over the top of textured layers of guitar and subsumed melodic sequences, eventually giving way to warm beds of evolving, tactile drones. Sonic rain showers roll into full-blown thunderstorms of effected guitar and pounding drums only to yield a field of shattered electronic and percussive debris. The three retain a remarkable sense of unity for never having played together while allowing plenty of room for each to express his individual personality. VolunteersRanked 370/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
In their late-60s heyday, Jefferson Airplane embodied the eras revolutionary attitude and experimental spirit like no other rock act. Their unique combination of adventurous musicianship, visionary lyrics and personal charisma defined San Francisco psychedelia and established the band as quintessential Aquarian-age messengers.
1969s Volunteers coincided with Jefferson Airplanes performance at the Woodstock festival and is one of the groups most popular albums. Its also one of their most explicitly political efforts, calling for revolutionary action and counter-cultural unity on such memorable anthems as We Can Be Together, Wooden Ships, Eskimo Blue Day and the albums iconic title track, with the band members formidable musicianship augmented by guest players Jerry Garcia and Nicky Hopkins. Volunteers uncompromising stance originally made the album a source of controversy, but today its rightfully recognized as a rock landmark.

A 1961 set of standards heavy on the ballads, Nice An' Cool is prime Gene Ammons. In front of a sympathetic piano-bass-drums trio (Richard Wyands, Doug Watkins, and the great J.C. Heard, respectively), Ammons' brilliantly soulful tenor saxophone really stretches out on the familiar melodies, but the relatively concise arrangements (all of the eight tracks are between three and eight minutes, with most hovering around the five-minute mark) don't allow him to wander too far afield as he occasionally does on less structured sessions. Nice An' Cool is first and foremost a mood album, with the unity of sound more important than the individual performances, but Ammons particularly shines on the extended opener, a tender, restrained version of The Music Man's Til There Was You that sidesteps the mawkishness of many interpretations in favor of a dignified grace. The backing trio is excellent throughout.

JuntoJUNTO-due out via Atlantic Jaxx/PIAS America--marks pioneering U.K. electronic music duo BASEMENT JAXX's seventh studio album.
Globally revered as innovators and leading lights of their genre, BASEMENT JAXX blew the lid off the dance music scene of the late 90's with their ground breaking albums Remedy, Rooty and Kish Kash. Having firmly established their place in the pantheon of dance music greats, the duo of Felix Buxton and Simon Ratcliffe are back with JUNTO, a genre-hopping musical roller-coaster that showcases the band's legendary inventiveness, irresistible songwriting and production smarts.
In May, the pair debuted the club-ready, jacking Unicorn, the first track to be taken from Junto. It has met with universal praise, working as a perfect taster of what the full length has to offer. They soon followed with Mermaid Of Salinas, a samba sensation just in time for the World Cub festivities. Then came Never Say Never, the first official single from the album, currently sitting at #4 on Billboard's Club Play chart and racing up Billboard's Dance Radio chart.
Spanish for 'together,' the concept behind JUNTO is one of unity and soulfulness, fusing dance music's sub-genres into one cohesive multi-flavored confection. It's a bold, boisterous, brilliant album full of amazing guest vocal performances, richly layered production and the irresistible sense of groove that has set them apart from the very beginning. Tour A TourApollonia, the French trio of Dan Ghenacia, Dyed Soundorom and Shonky, are set to release their debut artist album 'Tour à Tour' in October. "'Tour à Tour' (meaning to take turns, or 'alternate') represents the idea of a continuous motion of music between us; a neverending circle that flows and becomes hypnotic Our album represents the way we approach our DJ performance - there is a unity between us and we work like one artist; the music we play holds no boundaries of time, respecting music old and new." - Apollonia Vibe brothers in the studio, DJ booth and life, Apollonia have cultivated a creative synergy that sees them connect and work as one artist. The three originally met in the Parisian after-party scene of the late 90s, where Ghenacia was a resident at the infamous underground after-hour, Batofar. After over ten years of music and friendship, in 2012 the three decided the natural progression was to collaborate and form the DJ outfit and label, Apollonia. What they describe as a meeting of "black music and white soul", they have showcased their electric back2back2back sessions in the best clubs and festivals the world over. Created in a six-month studio lock down in Berlin in early 2014, and mixed down by Philippe Zdar (Cassius) and Alexkid, 'Tour à Tour' opens with the sounds of Apollonia's roots in house music.1. Belafonte Sings The Blues200 Gram LP Plated And Pressed At Quality Record Pressings
Mastered By Kevin Gray At Cohearent Audio
Old-Style Tip-On Heavyweight Jacket By Stoughton Printing
A favorite off the recommended list by The Absolute Sound magazine, and, as expressed in the liner notes, Harry Belafonte's favorite recording. Belafonte has never before sung on records as he does in this album. He is freer, more earthy, more exultantly identified with his material than ever before. He has always communicated an often ferocious power as well as lyrical sensitivity, but in this collection he achieves a unity of emotional strength in and understanding of his material that marks an important stage in his evolution as an artist.
Includes classic songs Cotton Fields, God Bless' The Child, Hallelujah I Love Her So. Recorded in New York City in January and March 1958, and in Hollywood, California, in June 1958.
As the liner notes by Nat Hentoff state, there is not much to say about the individual performances that is not entirely clear on hearing them. Truly a classic for discerning audiophiles, Belafonte Sings The Blues was the first Belafonte album recorded in stereo. The sound is incredible, and the dead-silent backgrounds of QRP 200-gram vinyl preserve every exquisite detail! This is one of Belafonte's most satisfying set of performances.

KayaFeatures Original Artwork
Kaya continues what has become an unspoken tradition in the evolution of Bob Marley & the Wailers discography -- blending western sounds and motifs with the icons and traditions from the very core of Jamaican society. In fact, the very word kaya is synonymous with marijuana in Rastafarian culture. Likewise, the album Kaya could be easily construed as an open love letter or musical paean to the lifestyle that Marley so eagerly embraced and promoted.
Themes of commonality and unity pervade this release more so than previous albums. Likewise, the overt political stances that had become somewhat of a moniker for Marley and the Wailers are temporarily replaced by timeless compositions, such as the eternally optimistic Easy Skanking and Is This Love. Marley had not -- as some proclaimed -- gone soft, however. The light, at times practically giddy, rhythms on Satisfy My Soul contrast the darker brooding sonic and lyrical images on Running Away.
The most pressings issues Marley deals with concern ever-increasing spiritual consciousness. Throughout Kaya, humble thanks is offered to, as well as guidance sought from, Jah -- evidence that the spirituality that permeates the Wailers music is real and not lip service. Kaya could be considered the oasis before the political and personal eruptions that would inform and influence Marley and the Wailers next studio releases Survival and Uprising.1. Easy Skanking

The Desaturating Seven (Pre-Order)Pressed On Clear Vinyl With Rainbow Splatter
Primus are excited to announce their ninth studio album The Desaturating Seven.
This is the first studio album of original material since 1995's Tales From The Punchbowl with the classic Primus line-up of Les Claypool (vocals, bass), Larry LaLonde (guitar) and Tim Alexander (drums). The Desaturating Seven is inspired by a 1970's children's book Claypool often read to his kids when they were growing up. The book tells a story of seven goblins one representing each color of the rainbow who simultaneously pull all of the color out of the world.
Many years ago when my children were little kidlets scurrying around the place wreaking havoc and whatnot till it was time for bed and book time, my wife turned them on to a book called 'The Rainbow Goblins' by Ul De Rico, Claypool explained. The dark imagery and beauty of the art struck me immediately and I thought, 'this would make good fodder for a piece of music.' The use of color and darkness both in the paintings and the writing was compelling and now, near two decades later, the metaphor of greed, gluttony and deceit vs unity of the masses is eerily relevant. I brought the notion to the Primus guys and they were all for it. Plus, I figured it's about time someone brought 'Goblin Rock' back to the fold.1. The Valley

Graceland: 25th AnniversaryRanked 81/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
The universal appeal of the music of Graceland proved more powerful and enduring than the political hotbed attending its creation. In 1986, the album sold 14 million copies worldwide, and received universal praise from critics around the globe. Paul Simon and the members of Ladysmith Black Mambazo performed on Saturday Night Live and appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone.
By January of 1987, You Can Call Me Al was everywhere and Graceland won 'Album of the Year' at the Grammy Awards in 1987. Then, in an unprecedented carryover, the album garnered the Grammy for 'Song of the Year' with its title track in 1988. The album generated three hit singles and kept Simon and the Graceland tour on the road for five years. Graceland and songs like The Boy in the Bubble, Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes, You Can Call Me Al and the title track are beacons of cultural unity and remain a pivotal listening experience over 25 years later!
Paul Simons Graceland played a greatly significant role in removing the standoffish dread Western culture harbored toward South Africa during its internal struggle against apartheid, humanizing both a countrys soul-searching hunger for liberation and its simultaneous outpouring of cathartic creative expression. Timothy White/Billboard
In many ways, Graceland was the most extraordinary experience in my entire career, notes Simon. The insight into rhythm was the great gift that I received from making the trip to South Africa, and collaborating with African musicians.1. The Boy in the Bubble

More Songs About Buildings And FoodThe title of Talking Heads' second album, More Songs About Buildings and Food, slyly addressed the sophomore record syndrome, in which songs not used on a first LP are mixed with hastily written new material. If the band's sound seems more conventional, the reason simply may be that one had encountered the odd song structures, staccato rhythms, strained vocals, and impressionistic lyrics once before. Another was that new co-producer Brian Eno brought a musical unity that tied the album together, especially in terms of the rhythm section, the sequencing, the pacing, and the mixing. Where Talking Heads had largely been about David Byrne's voice and words, Eno moved the emphasis to the bass-and-drums team of Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz; all the songs were danceable, and there were only short breaks between them.
Byrne held his own, however, and he continued to explore the eccentric, if not demented persona first heard on 77, whether he was adding to his observations on boys and girls or turning his Psycho Killer into an artist in Artists Only. Through the first nine tracks, More Songs was the successor to 77, which would not have earned it landmark status or made it the commercial breakthrough it became. It was the last two songs that pushed the album over those hurdles. First there was an inspired cover of Al Green's Take Me to the River; released as a single, it made the Top 40 and pushed the album to gold-record status. Second was the album closer, The Big Country, Byrne's country-tinged reflection on flying over middle America; it crystallized his artist-vs.-ordinary people perspective in unusually direct and dismissive terms, turning the old Chuck Berry patriotic travelogue theme of rock & roll on its head and employing a great hook in the process.

Med Sud I Vid Spilum EndalaustInspired by the unfettered feeling of the acoustic performances filmed during Heima, Sigur Ros adopted a looser approach in creating their fifth album Med Sud I Vid Spilum Endalaust. The album consequently is fresher and more human than anything they've previously recorded.
Rough edges, cracked notes, and the sound of fingers on strings are audible resulting in tracks (e.g. Illgresi) that prove to be the band's sparsest and most affecting work to date. Worry not though, plenty of electric guitar can be heard throughout the album ensuring Sigur Ros' commitment to challenging sonic limitations.
Med Sud I Vid Spilum Endalaust is truly a groundbreaking album for Sigur Ros. It's the first time they've attempted to write, record, mix, release and support (by touring) an album in the same year. Notoriously known for their laborious writing/recording style and their Icelandic roots, Sigur Ros decided to record an album outside of Iceland for the first time. Recording, mixing and mastering sessions took place in such un-Reykjavik cities as New York (Sear Sound and Sterling Sound), London (Abbey Road and Assault & Battery) and Havana. The result is pretty much their leave home album, the anti-Heima.
The opening track, Gobbledigook, is a manifesto setter with its shifting/no time signature. On the last track, All Alright, Sigur Ros find themselves singing a song solely in English for the first time. The seventh track, Ára Bátur, was performed with a full orchestra and the London Oratory Boys Choir. This was recorded in one take with no overdubs and the result was 90 people playing at once and just one perfect take. This is their first album working with Flood (U2, Depeche Mode, PJ Harvey) and the first since their debut to not be recorded with Ken Thomas. It was a true co-production, one that found Sigur Ros breaking out of old molds/habits. Double LP on high quality 180g vinyl.
Sigur Ros' fifth album is the Icelandic band's most worldly, varied and impetuous. The band achieves a new unity in variety here, winding from near-glam romp and fireside-folk warmth to slow-climb grandeur with an attention to the repeated payoff in a sturdy hook and hum-along chorus. (4 Stars) - Rolling Stone
Old-fashioned psychedelic grandeur is revived with otherwordly majesty and inexorable crescendos, a typically majestic but uncharacteristically summery album, with jolts of percussive energy and connotations of sunlight and air. - New York Times1. Gobbledigook

Painting Signs (Pure Pleasure)Painting Signs stands up as a complete work from beginning to end. Eric Bibb makes a fine case for blues as a music of introspection, warmth, and supreme nuance. Easily his most mature album to date, Painting Signs continues Bibb's formula of socially aware songs performed from an acutely personal point-of-view; standout tracks Don't Ever Let Nobody Drag Your Spirit Down and a cover of Hope In A Hopeless World hammer home his message of individual freedom and the responsibilities that accompany it. (It's no coincidence that Pops Staples, to whom Bibb dedicates this album, once recorded the latter song.) That's not to say Painting Signs is overly didactic or, indeed, 'heavy' in any way; even the most serious songs here, like the plea for peace and unity Got To Do Better, are leavened by a musical backdrop that's soulful and immediately accessible. Gospel-leaning backing vocals by Linda Tillery and her Cultural Heritage Choir help flesh out several cuts, and robust accordion fills by Bibb's longtime accompanist Janne Petersson add a subtle Louisiana flavor to the rolling, propulsive Kokomo and, to surprisingly good effect, the deep-grooved version of Jimmy Reed's Honest I Do. Elsewhere, he keeps a minimalist tone dominated by acoustic guitar, an arrangement that's particularly mesmerizing on the chilling title track. With its emphasis on sophisticated songcraft and its gentle blend of folk, gospel, and country influences, Painting Signs presents Bibb as an artist intent on blurring the line between blues and 'roots music' in general.

About Pure Pleasure
At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.
During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.
A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.
We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.
We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.
To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.1. Kokomo
