    Turn Blue

    The Black Keys' 2014 album, Turn Blue, was released on Nonesuch Records.
    Produced by Danger Mouse, Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney, Turn Blue features 11
    tracks including the first single, "Fever."


    Turn Blue was recorded at Sunset Sound in Hollywood during the summer of 2013 with
    additional recording done at the Key Club in Benton Harbor, MI and Auerbach's Easy Eye
    Sound in Nashville in early 2014. Of the new album, the band says Turn Blue could refer to:


    A: Suffocation

    B: Sadness

    C: Numbness from extreme cold

    D: A Cleveland late night TV host from the 1960s named Ghoulardi

    E: All of the above


    Moreover, Carney comments, "We are always trying to push ourselves when we make a
    record-not repeat our previous work but not abandon it either. On this record, we let the songs
    breathe and explored moods, textures and sounds. We're excited for the world to hear Turn
    Blue."


    This is the eighth full-length album from the duo and follows 2011's critically and commercially
    acclaimed El Camino, which is now certified RIAA Platinum. Internationally, El Camino is Gold
    in Belgium, Spain, Italy and Holland; Platinum in Ireland, France and the U.K.; and double
    Platinum in Australia, Canada and New Zealand. The record also resulted in three awards at the
    55th annual Grammy Awards-Best Rock Performance, Best Rock Song, and Best Rock Album.
    The band now has a total of six Grammy Awards including three in 2010 for their breakout,
    RIAA Platinum album, Brothers.

    Tomorrow Is My Turn

    Rhiannon Giddens, singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and founding member of Grammy Award-winning Carolina Chocolate Drops, makes her solo recording debut with Tomorrow Is My Turn, due out on Nonesuch Records. (The vinyl will follow on March 3.) The album was produced by T Bone Burnett.


    Burnett first worked with Giddens when she performed last fall at a concert he curated at New York City's Town Hall that was later broadcast on Showtime: Another Day, Another Time: Celebrating the Music of "Inside Llewyn Davis." Backstage, Burnett was immediately moved to ask if he could produce a record with her. "It was clear the first time I heard her at rehearsal that Rhiannon is next in a long line of singers that include Marian Anderson, Odetta, Mahalia Jackson, Rosetta Tharpe," Burnett says. "We need that person in our culture."


    For her first solo disc, Giddens chose a broad range of songs from genres as diverse as gospel, jazz, blues, and country. In addition to the traditional "Black Is the Color," tracks include Hank Cochran's "She's Got You," made famous by Patsy Cline; Dolly Parton's "Don't Let It Trouble Your Mind"; "O Love Is Teasin'," popularized by the Kentucky-reared "mother of folk" Jean Ritchie; and Elizabeth Cotton's "Shake Sugaree."


    "I had already started putting together a list of songs that didn't really fit into the Chocolate Drops world," Giddens explains. "At the top was 'Tomorrow Is My Turn' [immortalized by Nina Simone]. Seeing Nina do it on YouTube was revelatory. I knew she'd gone through a lot of hard times, as so many people did in that time period. Watching her sing this song, with the words 'tomorrow is my turn,' I began to think about the struggle of her and women like her." The significance of this song led Giddens to make it the title of the album as well. "Other songs started getting on my list and they were all by women or interpreted by women," she says.


    Tomorrow Is My Turn was recorded in Los Angeles and Nashville, with a multi-generational group of players whom Burnett assembled. Among them are fiddle player Gabe Witcher and double bassist Paul Kowert of label-mates Punch Brothers; percussionist Jack Ashford of Motown's renowned Funk Brothers; drummer Jay Bellerose; guitarist Colin Linden; legendary backup singer Tata Vega; veteran Nashville session bassist Dennis Crouch; and Giddens' Drops touring band-mates, multi-instrumentalist Hubby Jenkins and beat-boxer Adam Matta.


    Tomorrow Is My Turn follows Giddens' work with Elvis Costello, Taylor Goldsmith, Jim James, and Marcus Mumford on Lost On The River: The New Basement Tapes, an album also produced by Burnett that was released in November 2014. Her contribution was hailed by Rolling Stone magazine as the "showstopper evoking antebellum blues with a magnificent voice that interrogates the myths stirred up at Big Pink." The New York Times agreed, saying "On lead vocals she's the album's revelation, singing melodies that hark back to Celtic modes with a decisive presence and a haunting grace."

    John Lee Hooker was absolutely one of the most prolific and rhythmic pioneers of the blues scene for most of his life. Recording his first 78's in the forties and rapidly becoming one of the most in demand bluesmen of his time, Hooker was truly an American legend of our modern times.

    Through both his solo work and as a frontman for the legendary HÜsker DÜ, Bob Mould pioneered a signature wall of guitar sound and unmistakable vocal style that has imprinted a defining influence on more than one generation. In the three decades encompassing his career thus far, however, Mould saw his greatest success during his stint as lead singer, guitarist and songwriter for iconic early '90s trio Sugar.


    Sugar's 1992 debut album Copper Blue sold over 250,000 units upon its original release and received overwhelming praise. Rolling Stone christened it "thunderous"; Vogue dubbed it "smashing." NME would ultimately name it their 1992 Album of the Year. Currently, Mould has been commemorating Copper Blue's 20th anniversary by playing the record in its entirety with his current band of Jason Narducy (bass) and Jon Wurster (drums).


    Recorded and mixed during the same intense sessions that produced Copper Blue, the Beaster EP was originally released in April 1993. Notably darker in tone than the widescreen power-pop of Copper Blue, Beaster nevertheless boasts some of Mould's most powerful songwriting.


    "When word went around that Bob Mould had a new band, not only a 'band' band (as opposed to hired band to play his solo albums on tour) but also a trio, of course anyone raised from teenhood on punk rock and HÜsker DÜ in particular (like myself) went into high expectation mode. Copper Blue turned out to be a distillation of Bob's pop mode and roaring guitar mode into one tightly wound explosion of sound. There was space enough for the songs to breathe, but a driving urgency & energy in the rhythm section of Barbe & Travis that gives the whole album a barely-harnessed feel. Sonically, on songs like "The Act We Act" (Copper Blue), "JC Auto" (Beaster) & "Gee Angel" (F.U.E.L.) Sugar took HÜsker DÜ's aesthetic widescreen, the center held steady by Bob's focused songwriting.     Blue Bell Knoll is the fifth album by Cocteau
    Twins. Originally released in 1988 by 4AD in the UK
    and Capitol in the US, Pitchfork listed this album
    as one of the best albums of the 80s. This was the
    band's first full studio album to be released in
    the US via a distribution deal with Capitol. The
    album marked a turning point for the band. Robin
    Guthrie stated ""At first you're just trying to make
    a record, and then you're trying to make a really
    good record. And then you're trying to go further.... Blue Bell Knoll was a really important
    record to me. It really sticks as one of my favorites. Perhaps not because of how it came out,
    although it is quite listenable, but because of the
    experience of making it."  


    Heaven or Las Vegas followed in 1990, and the release was also via 4AD in the UK and Capitol in the
    US. It was the band's last album for 4AD, and was
    their most commercially successful possibly due
    to Elizabeth Fraser's much more intelligible lyrics. Numerous publications declared it one of the
    best albums of the 90s and Pitchfork called it "a
    core of ungodly gorgeous songs that is every bit
    as moving and relevant today as it ever was".


    Both of these albums have been unavailable on
    vinyl for some time. Heaven or Las Vegas has never
    been commercially available in the US on vinyl,
    while Blue Bell Knoll's vinyl via Capitol wasn't
    re-pressed after the initial release, and therefore
    hasn't been available in at least 25 years.

    The Blue Room Sessions

    Back in January 2015, we had the pleasure of hosting Coupler in our Blue Room. The event came to life when these local acousticians and purveyors of deliberate ambience took the stage. It was twenty minutes of captivating and unhurried techno that sounded bucolic at first, then violent, then crumbling, but always with a deft momentum. You could feel it in your gut and in your skull. Coupler's set was a twenty-minutes mega-moment of song, and we decided the live album needed an accompanying piece. We invited them back to record Side B in October with a full orchestra of nine friends and musicians, and it turned out to be a very special piece exploring the nether-regions where the organic collides with the electronic. However, this wasn't our typical TMR show. We kept it a relatively intimate affair, with the stage in the center of the room, and only sold a handful of tickets to those interested in seeing a recording process become a performance, making this our first installment in The Blue Room Sessions series.


    If you're new to the magic of Coupler, you can think of them as an ''organization'' rather than a band. Ryan Norris' objectives go beyond leading a band - he aims to use Coupler as a vehicle for writing, photography, installation art, film-scoring, etc, and above all this, he aims to collaborate with the creative people around him that inspire him. In the case of this particular performance, the organization core live members, Rodrigo Avendaño, Rollum Haas and Norris, plus a group of auxiliary players: Adam Bednarik, Mark Bond, Matt Glassmeyer, Mia Krout and Ben Marcantel. The icing on the cake was Kelli Shay Hix and her light installation. The performance was tackled from an oblique angle, using group improvisation to reinvent the trajectory as they played. The end result? The birth of a new series, and one of our favorite musical creations to which the Blue Room has ever played host.

    It's been a while since the last offering from Jeff Tweedy and Co, but three years of slavering from fans is about to be rewarded with this seventh studio album. Well... Sky Blue Sky was well worth the wait! Though Wilco are known as purveyors of alt country rock, Sky Blue Sky is an astounding demonstration of their ability to move between soulful acoustic folk, jazzy blues, country skank and pumping rock. Tweedy has the vocal range of three people, from country lilt to blues ache to folk sweetness - all this often in the space of one song. And what songs they are. 'You Are My Face' is a classic Wilco segue, as a sleepy 'Beatles-esque' ditty is suddenly interrupted with a jazz guitar explosion twinned with Tweedy's achy blues voice before returning seamlessly to piano tinkle and smooth vocals. There are stories of love lost and found, told with originality, humour and sweetness. 'How can I warn you my tongue turns to dust? Lack of disgust doesn't mean that I don't care. It means I'm partially there,' sings Tweedy on the delicately beautiful 'Please Be Patient With Me'. The instrumentation is a mini-rock opera in itself. Glorious riffs, thumping piano and virtuoso guitar solos from Nels Cline are orchestrated with skill, complementing the intricately composed and woven melodies. Simple and soothing, yet rich and rewarding, this is an album you unknowingly yearn for, like a cool hand on a hot forehead. A great album from a band in their prime. Our highest recommedation!


    Wilcos first studio album in three years, Sky Blue Sky, has been perhaps the most ardently awaited release of 07. Eager fans had taken to shouting out pleas for information to bandleader Jeff Tweedy during his recent solo acoustic tour, and the web chatter has been virtually deafening. Critic Katie Toms of Londons The Observer addressed fan speculation in an advance review, declaring, with unalloyed delight: Boy, was it worth the wait.... Simple and soothing, yet rich and rewarding, this is an album you unknowingly yearn for, like a cool hand on a hot forehead. A great album from a band in their prime.


    Sky Blue Sky is as eloquently straightforward as Wilcos last studio recording, the Grammy-winning A Ghost Is Born, was daringly experimental. Tweedys lyrics deal forthrightly with romantic separation and reconciliation, their bittersweet quality giving way, as the album progresses, to a more uplifting, redemptive mood. Tweedy quite literally banishes the darkness on the penultimate track, the inspiring, gospel-tinged What Lightthe albums first singleand concludes with a deeply affecting, til-death-do-us-part lullaby, On and On and On.


    There are hints of early-seventies Southern California folk-rock sweetness in the harmonies throughout the band-produced Sky Blue Sky, a bluesy Allman Brothers feel to the guitar /keyboard interplay, and plenty of brash guitar solos that take songs like You Are My Face and Shake It Off in thrilling, unexpected directions. This is especially good news for the crowds that will fill the Bonnaroo Festival in Manchester, Tennessee, this June, where the band plays the first U.S. date of its 2007 world tour in support of Sky Blue Sky. Principal songwriter Tweedy cut these tracks in the bands Chicago studio with members John Stirratt (bass, vocals), Glenn Kotche (drums), Mike Jorgensen (keyboards), Nels Cline (guitars) and Pat Sansone (guitars, keyboards, vocals)all of whom are also becoming notable performers in their own right. A Ghost Is Born co-producer Jim ORourke returns as music contributor.

    Prestige Series Blue Cartridge

    The Prestige (and upscale Reference) cartridges from Grado are the first released since the elder Grado's retirement, but they mark an evolution, not dramatic change, of the classic Grado style. There are three basic levels in the Prestige lineup: Black/Green, Blue/Red, and Silver/Gold. In each of these pairings, the latter model is the same as the former, but is able to meet more astringent test specifications. The Green, for instance, is taken from the top 15% of the Black models production.


    The newly redesigned Blue1 and Red1 have had their coil design reconfigured, and the effective moving mass of their generating system has been reduced by 17%. The Blue1 and Red1 models use a four piece OTL cantilever technology, standard oxygen free wire in the coils and Grado's specially designed elliptical diamond mounted on a brass bushing. The Red1 model is selected from the Blue1 production run and meets higher test specifications. Approximately 10% of the production run will meet these standards and become Red1 models.


    All Grado Prestige cartridges have a fixed magnet and coils that generate a flux field axial pivot. A small generator disc is attached to the back end of the cantilever and moves within the lines of flux of the four coils and magnet generating a signal in response to stylus movement. The user-replaceable, elliptical diamond stylus is attached to the cantilever and moves within the four separate magnetic gaps which comprise what Grado calls a "flux-bridger" generator system. The generating element creates a flux increase in one gap while decreasing it in another to reduce distortion. According to Grado's literature, this design requires fewer coil turns, resulting in lower cartridge mass and electrical inductance. The cartridge is said to be insensitive to tonearm cable capacitance. The Grado cartridges are hand-built in the U.S.,and each cartridge is tested against Grado's standard for performance.

    Half-speed mastered from the original master tapes, Mobile Fidelitys numbered limited edition 180g LP opens up the soundstages, clears previously muddled midrange frequencies, and places the imaging of the various country-tuned instruments into clear focus. For the first time, listeners can hear just how much of himself Costello invests in the vocal performances, while the Attractions dont miss a beat, particularly pianist Steve Nieve and guest musician John McFee. Moreover, the strings (when employed) take on new life, and the records cover art, a take-off on Kenny Burrells Midnight Blue, is faithfully reproduced.


    At the time of the albums recording in 1981, Costello was admittedly emotionally shattered. The title of the effort isnt merely coincidental. Feeling dejected and disenchanted, the vocalist had been put through the ringer: His pop stardom yielded one incredible record after another, but Costellos marriage was in tatters, his behavior deplorable, and his reputation tarnished by a famous drunken incident that shamed him for decades. In addition, he chose to follow his string of original LPs up with the soul- and R&B-minded Get Happy, a creative masterwork that nonetheless caused some of his mainstream fans to believe hed abandon his hit-making pedigree.


    So he did what any self-respecting, astute musician would want to do: Cut a country and western record steeped in heartbreak, fragility, sadness, despair, and beer-glass-raising spirit. Largely informed by the stacks of country LPs he bought in used shops during U.S. tours, and in the ideal frame of mind, Costello sought out not to make standards such as Sweet Dreams, Too Far Gone, Honey Hush, and Tonight the Bottle Let Me Down his own but to put a unique spin on the darkness, surprise, soulfulness, foreboding, and authenticity that they contain within.


    With each note, Costello succeeds and exceeds expectations, turning in versions that sound both old and new. Such timelessness, and the confluence of contemporary and traditional, distinguishes Almost Blue from nearly every other country tribute album made by pop/rock artists before and since.     Time and familiarity -- through multiple reissues -- may have muted the seeming significance of some of what's here, but in 1960 Sings Lonely and Blue was not only a breakthrough for Roy Orbison as his debut LP, but also for rock & roll. Up to that point, apart from Elvis Presley -- who was in a class by himself -- few white rock & rollers had even tried to make as bold a use of the LP as what we hear on this record. Orbison, his collaborator Joe Melson, and producer Fred Foster turned the singer's debut long-player into a huge canvas for a sound that combined rock & roll's beat, Nashville's countrypolitan sound, and the singer's unique multi-octave range and operatic intensity into something unique in music.


    The single Only the Lonely may have been the most accessible and commercial side of this new sound, but the whole album was packed with great moments and different permutations of that sound: the powerful lead vocal and the Boots Randolph sax break on I'll Say It's My Fault; the haunting Orbison-Melson Come Back to Me (My Love), which was like a mini-movie script, a vest-pocket romantic melodrama sung with operatic depth and played to a light rock & roll beat; Don Gibson's I'd Be a Legend in My Time, and I Can't Stop Loving You, both filled with larger-than-life musical attributes and emotions behind Orbison's extraordinary singing, Orbison treating the former almost like a Verdi aria while a sax solo, the Anita Kerr Singers, and a dense string section hold it in the realm of pop music; and Bye Bye Love given the new Orbison treatment and sounding like a country-pop symphony.


    The material was uniformly strong and consistent, probably due, in part, to the fact that Fred Foster was able to draw from nearly a year's worth of recording activity to assemble the contents of the album, and he also took advantage of the album's stereo release to devise a crisp, discreet, two-channel mix that brought out all of the details of this sound in notably sharp relief, creating one of the earliest stereo rock & roll albums that was actually superior to its mono equivalent. Indeed, Sings Lonely and Blue was among the first rock & roll LPs to attract the interest of serious audiophile enthusiasts.

    On their last album, Bigfoot, Cayucas debuted in a way that defied their namesake, the sleepy seaside town
    of Cayucos, CA. They grew from bedroom strumming to a band that toured the world and whose songs
    raced across the radio. But as Zach Yudin and his twin brother and bandmate, Ben, went in to create what
    would become their new album, what it all came back to was something more personal. While they now call
    Los Angeles home, they drew from the nostalgia of their childhood growing up in Davis, CA; the nostalgia
    in their music that is as much about a place they've never been (that maybe no one's been to) as any actual
    experience. It was a freedom to imagine, to explore ideas. And it was that wandering imagination and
    a punchy California dream that eventually grew to become Dancing at the Blue Lagoon.


    While their sun-drenched, jangly, sometimes melancholic sound is quintessentially Californian, the album
    very much their California. It's the sound of kids from the suburbs who fantasize in Technicolor, whose view
    of the Golden State is its own form of idealism. You can hear it loud and clear in the easygoing confidence
    throughout on the crisp, backbeat-driven "Hella" or as "Moony Eyed Walrus" takes surf guitar into
    fragmented, unpredictable places. The impossibly catchy and heartbreaking "Backstroke" is a Murakamiinspired detective story, neo-noir that is equal parts stylization and gut-level emotion.


    That said, Dancing at the Blue Lagoon is all about a band testing its comfort zone and asking us to do the
    same. "Big Winter Jacket" is a world away from sun-kissed pop, with acoustic guitars that build
    into something grand and expansive. The after-hours piano ballad "Ditches," like much of Dancing at the
    Blue Lagoon, takes pop conventions and digs into them. Like the Beach Boys of Sunflower or Surf's Up,
    it reminds us that sadness and uncertainty are never far from the surface, even in Cayucas's most carefree
    moments. It casts some like the title track "Dancing at the Blue Lagoon"-a lilting tropical fantasia-in
    an entirely different light.


    As the primary songwriter, Zach depends on this kind of versatility. "I write on a song-by-song basis," he
    says. It's been that way ever since he started taking music more seriously in college. Zach and Ben would
    "create bands that were more like a musical idea," record a few songs, and then move on. Cayucas grew out
    of this period of experimentation.


    The real core of the record is the almost harrowing "Blue Lagoon (Theme Song)." Accompanied by a lone
    guitar, Zach's performance is emotionally raw and technically precise, the kind of statement that
    gives Dancing at the Blue Lagoon real substance. Like a great actor whose art rings true because of an honest, human streak, Cayucas has taken sound we thought we knew and turned in into something personal and complex.

    African American singer and guitar player who got his start playing on the streets of Memphis around the turn of the century. His enormous repertoire of early folk, blues, old time country and popular music, along with his influence on local musicians has made many point to him as the true father of Memphis blues. He began touring the South with a black face Medicine Show comedian in the 1910s where it is said he met and influenced Jimmie Rodgers, among others. He then moved to Tennessee where he began playing with musician Dan Sane with whom he made his first recordings as the Beale Street Sheiks for Paramount in 1927. Throughout this period Stokes recorded a number of sides for Paramount and Victor until his old time style began to lose popularity with the record buying public.

    The jazz and blues singer Ida Cox was born in 1896 in Toccoa, GA. By the 1910s she was performing in minstrel shows throughout the South and by 1920 appearing alongside Jelly Roll Morton at the 81 Theater in Atlanta. She recorded dozens of sides in the 1920s for Paramount, performed at Carnegie Hall in 1940, and performed on record with Charlie Christian and Lionel Hampton in the 1940s. All of which is to say that, by the time she cut this LP with the Coleman Hawkins Quintet in 1961, she had already achieved the status of "legend". This record turned out to be her final artistic statement, and what a way to go. An absolutely stunning collection of blues and jazz, Blues For Rampart Street inspired many of the artists of the '60s folk revival, including Barbara Dane.

    One of the Three Kings of blues guitar along with B.B. and Albert, Texas-born Freddy (Freddie) King influenced everyone from Eric Clapton and Peter Green in the UK to Jerry Garcia and Stevie Ray Vaughan in the States. But even his staying up all night playing poker with Grand Funk wasn't enough to prevent his seminal King/Federal albums from staying out of print on vinyl for decades - until Sundazed came to the rescue. The reissue campaign that began with meticulously mastered editions of King classics Let's Hide Away and Dance Away with Freddy King, Freddy King Gives You a Bonanza of Instrumentals, and Freddy King Goes Surfin' continues with his rare 1963 offering, Bossa Nova and Blues. In the tradition of his surfing album, which wasn't really surf, Bossa Nova and Blues had no bossa nova - but the advertising was at least half true, and hey, there were two cuts that had "bossa nova" in the title. Though King was best known for blues instrumentals, "Bossa Nova Blues" and "The Bossa Nova Watusi Twist" (dig the dance craze threesome) were actually the only two instrumentals on an album otherwise dedicated to bluesy ballads. But of course, Freddie made it work - churning out bonafide classics like the karmic "Someday, After A While (You'll Be Sorry)" (later covered by John Mayall and the Blues Breakers on A Hard Road, also reissued on Sundazed mono LP), the emotive "The Welfare (Turns Its Back on You)," the soulful "It Hurts to Be In Love," and the more uptempo, New Orleans-flavored "You're Barkin' Up the Wrong Tree."

    About Pure Pleasure



    At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.



    During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.



    A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.



    We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.



    We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.



    To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

Throughout 60s and 70s Bland placed over 50 songs on the R&B charts, including "I Pity The Fool", which shot to No. 1 and "Turn On Your Love Light", a song that shaped the history of both R&B and rock & roll. Bland got his start singing in the early fifties as a member of a loosely knit group of musicians that included Junior Parker, Johnny Ace and B.B. King that formed around Memphis' famed Beale Street. Together these giants forged the new sound of Memphis blues, a sound that would carry both blues and R&B into the next millennium.     Rough Guide To The Blues Songsters

    Before there was the bluesman there was the songster and it was these traveling troubadours who helped lay the foundations for the development of the blues. In the decades preceding the phonograph and radio and before the American national entertainment industry had reached into the deepest parts of the South, it was these wandering musicians who provided the musical entertainment for all manner of social events.


    In order to be able to scrape a living together, the songster had to be incredibly versatile and come up with something for everyone. Armed with a banjo or guitar they performed every form of popular music of the day from folk songs and ballads to rags and spirituals. Priding themselves on their huge repertoires, they could be described as the human jukeboxes of their time.


    Along with the many musicians shrouded in mystery, this collection boasts tracks by legendary bluesmen such as Leadbelly, Charley Patton, and Mississippi John Hurt. Aside from the blues, these great performers would have been able to play everything asked of them at local bars and rural dances, and it is said that Leadbelly could draw on a repertoire of over 500 songs from many different genres. Likewise, the 'Father of the Delta Blues', Charley Patton left glimpses into his songster roots and true musical versatility with songs such as the featured 'Mississippi Boweavil Blues'. Henry Thomas's projected birthdate of 1874 predates that of Charley Patton by a good 17 years and gives us an idea of what rural black music sounded like before the turn of the twentieth century. He was 53 years old during his first recording session in 1927 by which point much of his music was already a representation of a bygone era. The same could be said of Richard 'Rabbit' Brown from New Orleans who worked as a ferryman on lake Pontchartrain and whose recorded legacy of just five songs includes 'James Alley Blues' which has been covered by Bob Dylan. Also from New Orleans, Papa Charlie Jackson accompanied himself with a banjo guitar and became one of the first songsters to record from the mid-1920s. His unique brand of hokum, used comic, often sexually suggestive lyrics and lively, danceable rhythms.


    This selection features several variations on traditional ballads about legendary characters such as Frankie and Johnny, Stagger Lee, John Henry and Railroad Bill. These became standards in the repertoires of songsters, both black and white, who shared a similar colour-blindness when it came to the racial origins of a tune. Frank Hutchison and Dick Justice were both white performers whose styles were heavily influenced by black musicians, in particular, Luke Jordan whose featured track 'Pick Poor Robin Clean' is a gambling song masterpiece. Like Jordan, many other well-known East Coast songsters such as Blind Blake, Pink Anderson, and Peg Leg Howell worked with traveling shows, which became a major factor in the spreading of the blues. Many of these shows were operated by vendors of patent medicines who would attract crowds by putting on a performance.


    As these shows began to disappear and recorded music and dancing in juke joints became popular, so the older songster style became less fashionable. Apart from the few waxed recordings which leave a tempting glance into a world before the blues, many of the featured artists faded into obscurity, as the songsters were overtaken by blues singers whose music was heavily promoted by record companies. Those songsters who were able to embrace this new music such as Charley Patton and Leadbelly became seminal figures and the rest is history.

    Mississippi's Son House was already legendary for a small collection of live field recordings made by folklorist Alan Lomax in 1941 and 1942, and for having taught some important licks to both Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters before he was rediscovered by a new generation of college-age fans in 1964.


    The Father of the Delta Blues recorded this namesake LP for Columbia Records a year later in 1965. It's become, in the words of Living Blues magazine - Essential recordings by one of the greatest bluesmen ever. And now, Analogue Productions presents a reissue unmatched in sonic quality and luxury presentation. For our version we turned to Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound to remaster the recording from the original master tapes. The freshly cut lacquers were then plated and pressed on 200-gram vinyl by our own Quality Record Pressings.


    Son was born Eddie James House, Jr., on March 21, 1902, in Riverton, Miss. By the age of 15, he was preaching the gospel in various Baptist churches as the family seemingly wandered from one plantation to the next. He didn't even bother picking up a guitar until he turned 25; to quote House, I didn't like no guitar when I first heard it; oh gee, I couldn't stand a guy playin' a guitar. I didn't like none of it. But if his ambivalence to the instrument was obvious, even more obvious was the simple fact that Son hated plantation labor even more and had developed a taste for corn whiskey. After drunkenly launching into a blues at a house frolic in Lyon, Miss., one night and picking up some coin for doing it, the die seemed to be cast; Son House may have been a preacher, but he was part of the blues world now.

    Greyhound Blues / Lonesome Old Jail

    Daniel Augusta Hunt, better known as Junior Hunt, was born in Munford, AL in 1929. On or around March 11th, 1953, Hunt recorded these two songs at 706 Union Avenue in Memphis and they were released in June of that year. For over 50 years, these songs were believed to only exist in 78 rpm form, until a copy pressed as a 45 rpm 7'' single turned up in Minnesota. This only known copy was sold on eBay in 2010 for $10,323. This marks the first legitimate release of Hunt's material on a 7'' record, and both songs are outstanding examples of the heartbreaking, desolate nature of the solo bluesman accompanying himself on guitar and borrow heavily from the template set by Lightnin' Hopkins. Hunt was arrested in Memphis in 1958 for stealing a saxophone and died in May 1962 in Phoenix, AZ.
