    Simplicity = Performance

The only thing left to add to the decco65 is your computer or streamer and speakers. Simple and elegant for the way you listen. The decco65 has the inputs you really need for sources you use. Few are "analog" today, yet most integrated amplifiers on the market support analog only. The decco65 was designed to enhance any digital source, from mp3 to full 24/192 on your computer to the Apple TV, Sonos, music servers, internet radio or whatever source you choose.

The Reasons It Sounds So Good

    • The ESS Sabre Digital to Analog Converter is widely recognized as the world's best DAC when dealing with hostile digital components like computers and streamers.

    • The 24/192 Asynchronous USB Input provides the best possible processing from this port and furthers the efforts of the ESS Sabre DAC.

    • Galvanic Isolation Typically reserved for more expensive DAC circuits, galvanic isolation prevents electrical noise from entering the DAC board on all grounded digital inputs.

    • Galvanic Isolation Typically reserved for more expensive DAC circuits, galvanic isolation prevents electrical noise from entering the DAC board on all grounded digital inputs.

    • The Tube Buffer uses a stereo triode 6N1P to smooth the harsh digital edge found in poor recordings and compressed audio.

    • The Amplifier uses the same technology found in very expensive premium amplifiers.

    • The Headphone Amp switches the speakers off when your headphones are inserted, so even when a quiet environment is required, you can still fill your head with lush high resolution music.

    Digital to Analog Converter

The ESS Sabre Digital to Analog Converter is widely recognized as the worlds best DAC when dealing with hostile digital components like computers and streamers. Jitter is all but eliminated leaving a beautiful digital canvas as a base. The art of this DAC comes in with the hundreds of additional parts and multiple power supplies designed around the ESS chip that work in unison to produce the Peachtree sonic signature.

    Real-world Performance

The 24/192 Asynchronous USB Input provides the best possible processing from this port and furthers the efforts of the ESS Sabre DAC. Asynchronous communication allows a high precision clock inside the decco65 to control the timing of the bitstream from the computer to the DAC. USB implementation is one of the more difficult tasks in the real world of computer audio.

    Galvanic Isolation

Typically reserved for more expensive DAC circuits, galvanic isolation prevents electrical noise from entering the DAC board on all grounded digital inputs. Any contamination due to the switching power supply, multiple ground points, and high speed processing is isolated from the DAC so nothing but pure 1s and 0s reach the DAC circuit.
The Tube Buffer uses a stereo triode 6N1P to smooth the harsh digital edge found in poor recordings and compressed audio. It can be switched on or off from the remote control to match your preference at any given time. We find it especially good for Pandora, MOG, Spotify and most cloud-based listening.

    Beautifully Amplified

The Amplifier section of the decco65 uses the same technology found in very expensive premium amplifiers. This high performance Class D design has the ability to drive 65 watts per channel into 8 and 95 watts per channel into 4 with a very natural sound. The decco65 has the sonic signature of a great A/B amp with the power efficiency of Class D. Its combination of low distortion, high bandwidth, and energy efficiency makes it the ideal partner to the decco65 digital front end and hybrid tube preamp.

    Just You and Your Music

The Headphone Amp in the decco65 switches the speakers off when your headphones are inserted, so even when a quiet environment is required, you can still fill your head with lush high-resolution music. The headphone output runs through the tube stage so you can enjoy that smooth tube sound in solitude.

    Includes Phono Stage

A beautifully-crafted, hand-made tube piece manufactured to deliver the sound of the classic Marantz 8B

The Cayin Audio A-50T uses four EL34s for Class A/B1 P.P amplification. The craftsmanship is absolutely first-rate, featuring point-to-point wiring, and each unit is hand-initialed by a quality-control inspector. The toroid power transformer and EI audio transformer are specially manufactured for the A-50T with low magnetic leakage, wide frequency response and low impedance. Two 12AX7EHs and two 12AU7s are used in the preamplifier. One very cool feature is the ability to switch between ultralinear and triode by remote control.

This piece was hand-built with extreme attention to detail, including point-to-point wiring. Point-to-point was the way that amps used to be wired back in the 1950s and '60s when cost was not the primary objective. Nowadays, most everything contains circuit boards instead of this point-to-point wiring, which is much more dependable and better performing. The bottom line is that point-to-point wiring sounds better. It's one of the main reasons why these Cayin pieces sound like the classic tube gear from Marantz and McIntosh. Anymore, products that feature point-to-point wiring cost a fortune, or they feature sub-par workmanship. You simply are not going to find craftsmanship like with this Cayin gear for anywhere close to this price.

There are output taps for 4 or 8 ohms. This allows you to fine-tune the sound that you desire. Switching is simple, and listening to the differences is a lot of fun. There is a removable cage, included at no extra charge. The cage snaps into place simply, so that you can take it on and off with no problem. Keep it on if you're worried about protecting your tubes, or take it off to show what real, heavy-duty, classic tube gear looks like. Turn off the lights and watch 'em glow.

    Handcrafted in the USA

Tried and true: The Manley 500 and 250 Watt Monoblocks are our most powerful push-pull production-models. Both the circuit design and the selected componentry have been refined over years and years of development. Reliability that you can depend upon combined with musical accuracy and emotional authority is what these amplifiers promise- and deliver. They are able to switch operation modes allowing the listener to choose between the sonically seductive qualities of triode and the more powerful Ultra-Linear configuration. We use big, beefy reservoir capacitors in the high voltage supplies giving plenty of instant energy for dynamic performance of transient peaks and bass impact and weight which often exceeds that of rival solid-state amplifiers. We run high voltages on the plates of the output tubes but operate them at lower current which will result in their longer life. Although each output tube has its own bias-adjust, We carefully fit each amplifier with computer-batched tubes for optimum performance. The bias adjustment pots and measuring points are conveniently located behind the oval front panel insert.

To avoid a heavy power drain when the cold amplifier is first switched on, we conceived a Soft-Start mode which also functions as an Ever-Warm position allowing the amplifiers to be always warmed up for pleasurable listening. Each amplifier only consumes 30 watts of power in Ever-Warm mode. A blinking green LED reminds the user that the amplifier is in warm-up mode because as all the power supplies are at half-voltage, the amplifier will still operate at half power when the Ever-Warm mode is engaged, so the user should use the MUTE switch when in this mode.

The front-panel mute switch and angled-back chassis make it easier to hook up the interconnects, speaker cables, and IEC power cord.

In our own in-house magnetics department, our R&D team completely redesigned all of our output transformers in 1998 with the goal to reclaim that luscious rich mid-range of our vintage designs. In 2013 we reworked the output transformer to operate the output stage in Ultra-Linear mode which is a great sounding balance between the detail of triode and the brawn of Tetrode. We also specifically set out to achieve a deeper bottom register at higher power with lower distortion. Hours and hours of listening tests, measurements, and fine-tuning brought an exciting and stunning result to our ears. We hope you will agree.

AmpsandSound Products Are Handmade In Small Batches and Go Through Extensive Quality Control

The draw of single-ended amplifiers has always been a level of engagement that other amplifiers often fail to deliver; well designed single-ended amplifiers are not only impressive in the midrange, but across all frequencies.

The Bigger Ben is designed to offer transparency, rich detail, and an incredibly low noise floor. Parts selection was crucial during the design process and each was chosen not for price, but for the level of synergy between parts. Rectification is solid state which permits cooler operation and reliable performance. The amp is configured for ultra-linear operation allowing greater power output and minimal use of feedback.

The amplifier features an extremely stiff power supply; significantly larger than needed for primary filtering. In the early days of tube amps, chokes were easier to come by than caps and more reliable. As such, large chokes were utilized for primary filtering. As capacitor production gained reliability and costs came down, cap filtering and smaller chokes became the norm. In a single-ended design, a regulated and extremely quiet power supply is very important. Using a large 5 Henry choke is expensive, but yields significant improvements in reduction of DC ripple.

The chosen output transformers are over-spec'd and the highest quality. Ampsandsound considers the output transformer as important as any other design choice. When buying any tube amplifier, the weight of the output transformer can be directly proportional to the quality of sound. In general, larger outputs have more massive cores which are less prone to saturation and have higher inductance.

Larger cores and greater inductance allow the transformer to carry a low-end signal with minimal distortion. These transformers are bench tested to perform down to 20hz and up to 20khz. Even if your speakers only go to 50hz like a classic LS3/5 two-way, having an amplifier able to drive that low is pivotal in recreating the whole soundstage.

    Choice of Loudspeaker?

The Bigger Ben pairs well with most speakers 94db and above. However, Bigger Ben is so quiet it will perform beautifully with full-range or horn-loaded speakers of efficiency above 100db, 700 micro volts RMS noise at idle. Speakers that can go down cleanly to 30hz really bring out the very best of the amp. 20z-20khz -1db at full power. The Bigger Ben (depending on choice of output tubes) will output between 5-7 watts, but there's a lot more in the tank than that when matched with appropriate loudspeakers.

    Tubes:

The amp is compatible with all 6l6 family tubes, including the 6l6GC, KT66, KT77, KT88, KT90, and EL34s. The driver tube is a 6SL7.

    Circuit Design by Jim Fosgate

    Industrial Design by Fred Hulen

    Manufactured by Musical Surroundings

World-class audio engineer Jim Fosgate is the vision and expertise behind the Fosgate Signature Tube Headphone Amplifier. The Fosgate Signature embodies unique and patented circuit topologies, elevating the headphone listening experience. The genesis of the design started over 2 decades ago. Countless man-hours of working with every possible major circuit approach was not just explored, but designed, built, and auditioned by Jim Fosgate himself. Some initial designs used output transformers, some designs were direct drive with no output transformer. Others prototypes used solid-state circuitry and buffers to obtain low output impedance for driving headphones. Through this painstaking and thorough approach, a headphone amplifier design evolved which satisfied the exacting standards of Jim Fosgate.

The chose circuit incorporates 12AX7 vacuum tube amplification in the low distortion SRPP configuration, similar to our Signature Vacuum Tube Phono Preamplifier, winner of the 2011 Golden Ear Award from The Absolute Sound magazine. High speed, high current, video buffers are used to drive headphones directly. This provides a pure audio path with low output impedance, low distortion, and wide signal bandwidth.

The Video Buffers are not Op Amps and have no voltage gain. They offer high impedance inputs so the vacuum tubes are not loaded down, and low output impedance capable of driving most headphones to high volume levels with no audible distortion or colorations. The natural smooth sound of the 12AX7 vacuum tubes pass straight through to the outputs.

The bass boost equalizer circuit is designed to give the headphone listener defined, low frequency bass impact without bass boom. There are three positions on the bass control, Min, Max, and Off. When the control is in the center Off position, the bass boost is bypassed. This circuit has been used in different forms in many products including Rockford Fosgate Car amplifiers. Jim Fosgate received US patent number 3,883,832 for this circuit in 1975. It is called a "SINGLE ELEMENT CONTROLLED TWIN T FILTER" and has a much steeper curve then a bass or loudness control. It changes frequency and amplitude (Boost) with a single control. When the control is set in the Min position, the maximum boost is applied at a lower frequency then when the control is set to the Max position.

All aspects of the circuitry maximize a clean signal path. However, the uniqueness of the circuit does not end here. In order to infuse the sound with a natural sound stage, Jim integrated his surround circuitry design, part of his US patent 5,307,415 "Panorama Control" filed in April 1994. This circuit applies an out of phase cross blend to create a sense of depth and space and moves the dimensional soundstage outside of your head. The control has Min, Max, and Off positions. In the center off position the surround circuit is bypassed so the signal is unaffected and provides normal stereo.

This Headphone Amplifier's elegant circuit has the tube amplifiers, buffers, bass EQ, and surround processing configured in a single stage. Negative feedback is applied around this stage in a single loop. Output offset is controlled with DC servos, allowing the video buffers to directly drive the headphones with no output capacitors in the signal path. There is only one coupling capacitor per channel in the signal path, and it is enclosed within the feedback loop, thus capacitor colorations are eliminated. Distortion and noise are below the threshold of hearing. The bandwidth is very wide allowing audio signals to pass through without colorations. Bandwidth is an amazing "ten times" the threshold of human hearing, 2 HZ to 200KHZ at -3DB.

The power supply is similar to the one used in the Fosgate Signature Phono Preamplifier. It uses separate oversize storage capacitors on each amplification path of each channel to provide a rock solid supply voltage without voltage regulators to affect the signal. The circuit is configured so that audio signals from the one channel cannot couple to the other, preserving soundstage width and depth. This power supply provides the benefits of dual mono and batteries in a simple AC powered circuit.

A 35 second muting circuit eliminates turn on/off thumps from the direct coupled output circuit, and there are two stereo inputs and a stereo tape output are provided for added flexibility. Industrial design by Fred Hulen incorporates the hallmarks of the Fosgate Signature line including classic, open tube design and real wood side panels.

AmpsandSound Products Are Handmade In Small Batches and Go Through Extensive Quality Control

The name Agartha used to describe a city in the center of the world. The ampsandsound Agartha brings the legendary 300b to personal audio. They chose the 300b for its long history as the king of triodes. Combining a single gain stage, zero feedback and careful attention to grounding techniques they are able to use a 300b with headphones without hum or noise. For those with headphone, horns or single driver speakers who are seeking audio nirvana, the Agartha is built with exacting attention to parts selection and implementation.

The Agartha tube amp pairs a 6SL7 tube for front end with SS rectification enabling great transient peeks, faster/livelier presentation and ultra-quite operation. The Agartha uses direct-heated triodes with zero feedback providing the classic single-ended sound so widely loved.

Typical of all ampsandsound amplifiers, the power supply is massive. This combined with a generous choke yields our trademark low noise; less than 3mv at idle, and stable output of 5 watts RMS into an 8ohm load and 1watt into a 32ohm headphone. Frequency response is 12hz to 30hz at 1 watts, 1-db. Output iron has been carefully selected to reduce distortion and increase frequency response. And of course we also use our 5% capacitors and 2% resistors.

The motivation of the Agartha is to provide access to the wide availability of NOS tubes and give the warm mid-range bloom that is at the heart of single-ended direct-heated triode designs. Tube set included.

    Handcrafted in the USA

A magazine reviewer once wrote the following about the Manley 250's: In triode mode a pair of Manleys produces a remarkably three dimensional soundfield that is both convincing and seductive. When switched into tetrode mode, the Manleys have the brawn to deliver a full symphony orchestra directly into your living room. When I listened through the same cut through the triode mode tube amps, I cried. Yup, tears ran down my cheeks while I bounced up and down, waving my arms, physically buffeted by the raw emotion of the music. Emotion- that essential component at the very core of great music. The Manleys pass through that emotional information, but the (solid-state amps) don't.

Tried and true: The Manley 500 and 250 Watt Monoblocks are our most powerful push-pull production-models. Handcrafted in the USA

In 2002 we launched a very tasty all-tube 100 watt monoblock called The Snapper® (oceanic names continuing). At $7,250 per pair for stereo playback, we also welcome you to catch a school of Snappers for surround systems.

Another brilliant design from Mitch Margolis features a quartet of EL34 or 6CA7's in a fully differential circuit topology, including the input and driver stages. This Snapper can be driven fully balanced all the way through via the XLR inputs. If you have balanced outputs on your preamplifier, this amplifier is the first Manley design to really let you take advantage of your XLR's without additional balancing input circuitry or input transformers. Very cleverly, the unbalanced RCA's can alternatively be used in this special topology with equally impressive results.

Biasing is easy with all measurement points and trimpots located on the top deck and speaker connection is made with heavy duty WBT binding posts.

Over three months of prototyping in the Manley Magnetics department resulted in a brand new output transformer design, a true 19-section incredibly complicated piece. The Snapper will crank out 100 watts at 10 cycles all day long and a full 110 watts from about 15Hz all the way up to 40KHz. Don't let frequency response specs fool you when people give you amazing bandwidth measured at... oh, five puny watts. We're talking full power bandwidth here! Continuous duty. Real muscle.

Our most esoteric product is THE 300B PREAMPLIFIER. This is the first and only preamp to feature these classic tubes. We had been designing the 300B into small power amps for many years and have always had great respect for the smooth natural sound of this tube. However, a single 300B provides truly appropriate power and voltage swing for headphones and makes a remarkable line driver. Here is where the impedances are not too low and the power requirements are not too high: ideal for this kind of tube in a single-ended configuration. This was the genesis of a new preamp.

We combine the historic 300B with another classic, the large octal based 6SL7GT, for the input stage- all triodes running in pure Class A operation. To complement this 'retro' feel, we implemented vacuum tube rectification and regulation in the power supply along with plenty of capacity. We also developed an additional (and innovative) ripple rejection circuit to filter out power supply noise making this an incredibly low-noise preamplifier- especially critical for headphone users.

Complementing this lovely and rich sounding line-driver is the ALPS audiophile volume control, gold plated RCA connectors, high purity silver wire, mil-spec printed circuit boards with extra thick copper and plating, and custom designed output transformers which we wind right here in our own magnetics department. It all adds up...

For 2002, we returned to our classic and elegant Manley-Blue pewter grey color and the chassis was reworked to accommodate a few updates we had in mind.

Whether you use headphones or loudspeakers this preamp will deliver the goods and spoil you for any other preamplifier.

Notes for current version not covered in the manual:

The transformer switch puts the output transformer in or out of circuit. You HAVE TO have it switched to IN to use the headphone jacks. It is recommended, in the spirit of less is more, to switch to OUT when using the main line outputs.

The SUB out is a post-volume control output which can be used to drive a powered subwoofer unit so that the level of the subwoofer follows the volume level of the preamplifier.

AmpsandSound Products Are Handmade In Small Batches and Go Through Extensive Quality Control

AmpsandSound headphone amplifiers are the truest expression of their mission to bring tested designs and minimalist values to personal audio. They have chosen to utilize only single-ended, zero feedback tube designs to bring back warmth and musicality to personal audio. Each model balances the desire for power, the need for quite operation and the desire for wide bandwidth. The ampsandsound sonic signature closely approximates the best aspects of the classic tube sound of the 50s (maximum midrange bloom), supplementing it with a modern bass signature and transient speed.

Like many of their products, the Kenzie headphone amplifier evolved from earlier designs - in this case, rave reviews about the SE-84's headphone section. The inevitable question followed; why didn't they build a dedicated headphone amp?

    Why indeed?

After some research, they came to the conclusion that a headphone amplifier building on the much loved Darling circuit was the right choice for them. The outstanding performance of the Kenzie headphone amplifier is made possible with custom wound ultra-high quality output transformers providing amazing frequency extension.

The Kenzie does not use a voltage network, and has more than enough power to drive even the most difficult headphones. They chose 32 ohms and 600-ohm output taps to allow use with the widest variety of headphones; everything from Grado Labs, HiFiMan, Audeze, MrSpeakers, Sennheiser, and Beyerdynamic.

The Kenzie showcases the transformers on the chassis to frame in the unique 1626 single-ended tubes. They have included an ALPS volume pot to allow attenuation and simplify the signal path.

The Kenzie is one of the sweetest-sounding headphone amplifiers on the market. The 1626 is commonly referred to as the "Poor Man's 300B"; offering a similar level of warmth, texture, and soundstage depth.

The 1626 is a WWII-era tube that was used as a transmitter tube in radar installations. The design is shy on pure output, but offers layers of texture and drive, and is paired with a massive choke and robust output transformers for ultra-quiet operation. As with all AmpsandSound products, parts selection was crucial during this build and each chosen not for price, but for best quality and synergy.

The Kenzie is handmade in Southern California with U.S.-sourced parts and custom hand-wound output transformers.

AmpsandSound Products Are Handmade In Small Batches and Go Through Extensive Quality Control

Like many AmpsandSound products, the Mogwai evolved from their earlier designs, borrowing from the Bigger Ben and Classic Wonder, while embracing the form factor of the Kenzie. The Mogwai offers more than an entry point for tube amps, but a hybrid product, meant for both headphone and loudspeaker use.

Their circuit offers the ability to roll a wide variety of tubes inexpensively and bring increased power to headphones without any sacrifice of design choices that conflict with our values.

The Mogwai combines the features of a full-sized two-channel power amplifier and headphone amplifier in a chassis that is suitable for a desktop use.

The Mogwai utilizes single-ended Class A operation with zero feedback to provide the essence of our Classic Wonder sound; strictly old school SET sound, without having to spend hundreds if not thousands of dollars on tubes.

The performance of the Mogwai is made possible with custom wound ultra-high quality output transformers from Transcendar, which provide excellent frequency extension and a flat response.

The Mogwai does not use a voltage divider network, but depends on transformers instead. They chose a 32 ohm tap for headphones to offer a dedicated selection for the widest range of headphones, and an 8-ohm loudspeaker tap to connect the Mogwai to moderately efficient loudspeakers.

The Mogwai displays its transformers prominently on the chassis to frame in the tube compliment, which can vary from a 6L6GC to a KT88.

Volume control is handled by the ALPS volume pot to allow attenuation and simplify the signal path. Zero feedback on the outputs negates the need for a pre-amplifier; an iPhone can drive the Mogwai without issue.

The Mogwai differs from the Kenzie as it aims to provide powerful output while remaining true to classic tube design. As with all ampsandsound products, they strive for a neutral, non-fatiguing sound, and demand that all our products be ultra-quiet in operation. Quiet operation is not just a goal but a guiding principle that shapes all design and implementation choices.

The Mogwai is handmade with pride in Southern California with US-sourced parts, including our precision transformers.

These cute little guys produce around 40 watts RMS in Ultra-Linear mode or around 20 watts in TRIODE from a quartet of EL84 / 6BQ5 tubes driven by a 6414 dual triode driver and a 12AT7EH input dual triode. The EL84 has been one of our very favorite tubes for many years, extremely long lasting and reliable, and can be considered the smaller brother of the much beloved EL34: really quick-sounding both in the bass and especially in the top end. And of course this has a lot to do with our Manley Output transformer, the same one we build for the Manley Stingrays.

We have been building EL84 amplifiers for well over a decade. The Manley-branded Tiny Triodes were much acclaimed in the early 1990's. In 1993 after the Manley company split off from VTL, the Manley Tiny Triodes underwent a chassis rework to become the Manley 35 watt Monoblocks soon followed by the 50 Watt Monoblocks. The more powerful Ultra-Linear mode operation became the standard with hard-wired Triode operation or Triode/UL switching available upon special request.

After the introduction of the Stingray Integrated amplifier in 1998, we then went back and incorporated the Stingray's new circuitry design refinements into the 50 Watt Monoblocks. Finally, big bass out of a small amplifier! So, topology-wise, the post-1998 50 watters were the monoblock version of the stereo Stingray, with the additional variable feedback feature. After the introduction of the fabulous Manley Snappers in 2002, it was obvious that we had to update our classic EL84 50 watt monoblocks both cosmetically and feature-wise. Make-over time!

Everyone was always asking us for Triode/Ultra-Linear switching. We listened to your requests and feature the Triode-UL switch as standardequipment on the MAHI's. As are the beautiful german WBT binding posts. Also we increased the B+ rail capacity in a major way. The 50 Watt monos only had around 45 Joules or energy storage in the B+ rail. Now the MAHI's have nearly 115 Joules of energy storage for the B+ rail. You can hear this improvement in the especially in the bass region: tighter, faster, deeper. More is more in this case.

The chassis design is like a mini-Snapper. They are so cute! And of course they come standard as a pair so you get.... Mahi-Mahi.

We believe the MANLEY MAHI's give a lot of value for an affordable price and we think you will be surprised at just how big these little guys sound. You have no idea how fabulous these amplifiers are.

AmpsandSound Products Are Handmade In Small Batches and Go Through Extensive Quality Control

The Casablanca's are aptly named for their classic good looks and commanding performance. They came about in response to repeated requests for a single-ended amp with the power to drive non-compliant or inefficient speakers. Given that large power SE amps are either run in pentode or using exotic power tubes, Ampsandsound opted for a push-pull based amp; a larger version of the Stereo 15.

The Casablanca's provide 60 watts with KT88/6550 power tubes, and 45 watts with EL-34s. Based on the Eico circuit and using a 12AX7/6SN7 front end allows access to a vast array of NOS/NIB tubes. The Casablanca's come with 8ohm and 4ohm taps and can be ordered with 16ohm taps if desired. To provide reliable power and a sweet sound, they turned to their design partners and carefully evaluated 2 new takes based on similar designs; the Eico HF97 and the Dynaco MKIII. They built both and did a shootout with the reigning king of push-pull amps, the McIntosh MC275.

The results were startling. The Eico based circuit was a clear improvement over their take on the MKIII, and was on par with the MC275. The Casablanca's provided extremely articulate bass, with truly remarkable mid and high frequency extension. The bottom line - this amp provides the warmth and detail that is expected from reference level push-pull amps, and nearly limitless personalization with different tube combinations. The tubes included with purchase are new Tungsol 12AX7, Tungsol 6SN7, and Tungsol 6550s.

They were recently asked what differentiates Ampsandsound Casablancas from any of the other well-made gear in the $2000-$3000 range. The answer is that there may be few differences, but the differences that do exist are pivotal to their approach to the reproduction of music. First off, many tube amplifiers in the Casablanca's price range have lower power. Other similar-price amplifiers are stereo amps, not providing the performance and channel separation for which mono-blocks are known.

They chose the Casablanca design to allow for the largest practical power supply. Also, mono-blocks require 40% more parts, and like all Ampsandsound components, the Casablancas utilize modern materials to bring a higher level of performance. This includes using 1-2% resistors instead of the less costly and more common 10% variety, and coupling capacitors with 5% tolerance instead of 20%. Point-to-point wiring would allow for streamlined building, but their PCB's provide superior grounding and noise isolation, with the result that they have realized and improved upon the sonic characteristics of the great amplifiers of the 50's and 60's.

The story behind the Valve Isis

Rega's now legendary head electronics engineer Terry Bateman spent 10 years researching the concept of a CD player using valves in the output amplifier.

When it came to the inspiration for this project Terry drew on the enormous experience he gained while working with musical instrument valve amplification, which dates back to the middle part of the 1970's. Terry's concept was based on the need to have a playback chain, which is in harmony with the instruments and equipment being used.

Valves have been widely used in musical instrument and recording amplification from the 1950's to the present day, therefore it made great sense to develop a valve based CD player to match that of the signal chain found in such applications. This approach kept the circuit straightforward, this is mainly because musical instrument amplification is not excessively hindered by some of the folklore surrounding certain aspects of valve audio design. He took the approach of combining the technical and sonic attributes of valves in a differential instrumentation amplifier circuit driven from differential output DAC with a passive LC filter.

Careful choice of valves and the use of moderate levels of feedback keep the distortion at reasonable levels thus keeping the colouration to a minimum. The valve Isis became fully realised when he combined the valve project with the Wolfson high performance differential output WM8741 DAC along with the digital playback circuitry of its solid state stable mate.

    Design

The valve Isis shares the same digital and USB sections as found in the solid state version however the analogue stage is valve based with passive filtering. This stage uses two military specification triple mica 5814A (ECC82/12AU7) triodes being driven by the revolutionary Wolfson WM8741 ultra high performance digital to analogue converter.

The output buffer and transformer driver stage uses two ECC88 (6DJ8/6922) triodes. This, like its solid-state stable mate, is of an un-orthodox design. The design goal with this player was to keep away from the normal design approach of lets run it through a valve to make it sound warm, but take advantage of industrial valve circuits to make an articulate and competent valve based CD player. Careful choice has been made for every component in the digital and the analogue signal path to ensure the integrity of the signal.

Careful design of the PCB's ensures isolation of not just the digital and analogue sections, but also the motor, display and user interface processor. All sonically critical electrolytic capacitors have been by-passed with polypropylene or polyester film capacitors. In addition to this, large value electrolytic capacitors have also been by-passed with audio grade electrolytic capacitors. Power supply impedances in the digital to analogue converter are kept very low by the use of solid polymer capacitors. All power supplies utilise custom Rega K-Power smoothing capacitors, and fast diodes have been used throughout in power supply rectification.

The Isis uses enhanced and optimised control code for the control of the CD processor and user display; this will speed up the initialisation process by means of a tighter control interface between the user micro and CD processor.

    Technology

The differential output of the digital to analogue converter drives a valve differential (operational) amplifier, with a very modest amount of feedback to stabilise the operating conditions. The 5814A based differential amplifier, with a solid-state current generator in its tail, takes full advantage of the differential output from the digital to analogue converter. This is followed by a passive Butterworth second order LC filter. Finally, this signal is buffered using a low anode resistance ECC88 to drive the output and balancing transformer.

In design it was felt that unnecessarily high levels of THD would unduly overwhelm the qualities of the digital stage of the Isis. The overall THD is typically 0.06% being prominently even order, where the 2nd harmonic predominates. This will give the sonic dynamics of the valves without dominating the sonic qualities of the digital section.

After many hours of tube rolling we found the 5814A differential amplifier position was best on the grounds of micro-phonics, reliable operation and sonic qualities. Both the HT & LT power supplies are fully regulated and use the same power supply parts as used in the solid state Isis. Like the solid-state analogue stage valve Isis has it's own dedicated 50VA mains transformer, ensuring galvanic isolation between the digital and analogue sections of the player.

The Isis has an isolated balanced output, and in keeping with the spirit of the valve circuit topology we have opted to use a transformer in this position. This balancing transformer is made to the same exacting standards to that found in the IOS MC amplifier.

We hope that you enjoy this product as much as we have enjoyed creating it. - Rega

All these features amalgamate to create the supreme level of performance found in the Isis and provide a perfect partner for the Rega Osiris amplifier.

The Stereo 15 Special Edition is an EL84 ultra linear amp with 15watts of tube bliss. 2 EL84 tubes in push-pull configuration with ½ of a 12AX7 and ½ of a 12BH7 per channel, just like our original Stereo 15. The Stereo 15 Special Edition is based on the famous Halfer circuit with cathode bias allowing trouble free operation. 8ohm and 4ohm taps with 8ohm and 16ohm combination as an option. The circuit used is widely famed for its stability and liquid midrange.

The Stereo 15 Special Edition produces perfectly stable 15watts RMS with 42watt peaks. The output transformers utilize massive cores which resist saturation and deliver jaw dropping low end performance. Like all ampsandsound amplifiers, it is dead quiet with reliable performance. When we say dead we mean put your ear to the mouth of your horn-loaded system and all you will hear is silence!

Never leaving well enough alone, the Special Edition is for those who demand the very last degree of performance. Where the Stereo 15 Special Edition differs is in the use of custom wound transformers made exclusively for ampsandsound. The power transformer is nearly twice as heavy as the unit used in the Stereo 15 and allows for greater current delivery/reserves and the use of a tube rectifier. We have specified the use of a GZ34, and can accommodate GZ37s; 5U4s allows NOS rectifiers. Tube set included.
