The Look Of LoveThe Look of Love doesn't tamper with Diana Krall's ongoing success, continuing the emphasis on romantic ballads and embracing them with lush string arrangements. At the core, of course, is Krall's voice. She's developing into one of the great torch singers, with an approach that's both direct and subtly nuanced, true to the song and yet deeply personal.
There's a combination of restraint and drama here, as Krall ranges from the confident to the wistful, from loss to playful insinuation, as each song requires. Cry Me a River is bittersweet triumph, while Love Letters and Maybe You'll Be There maintain the most tenuous emotional hold, at once fragile and resilient. Besame Mucho and Dancing in the Dark are sultry romances wafted on light Latin beats. The songs develop their intimacy in the setting of Krall's quartet, which usually includes bassist Christian McBride and drummer Peter Erskine and several fine guitarists, most frequently Russell Malone. True RomanceOver the past few years, Charli has released a series of singles and mixtapes, toured the globe supporting the likes of Coldplay, Santigold, Sleigh Bells and Justice and garnered champions from practically every tastemaker blog and magazine on both sides of the Atlantic. She's had 2.5 million views on YouTube, 470k views of new video for 'You (Ha Ha Ha)' (in one month) and over 630k total plays on Soundcloud. It's hard to believe someone so young could achieve so much. Through it all her main focus has always been on making the best possible album she could. This was made possible by working with some fantastic collaborators who helped hone her vision for a dark, emotional pop record including Ariel Rechtshaid (Usher, Major Lazer, Solange), Patrik Berger (Lana del Rey, Robyn) as well as hotly tipped blog favourites Blood Diamonds and J£zus Millions.
As well as being an artist in her own right, Charli has written and featured on one of the biggest global breakthrough hits of 2012 for Icona Pop. I Love It created an absolute frenzy stateside, having blown up all over the world.
True Romance shares its title with an unbelievably well-cast 1993 movie written by Quentin Tarantino, who was reassembling cultural detritus way before mash-ups and microblogging. Charli XCX's approach to pop is similarly postmodern (how 90s does that sound?), pulling from moody 80s synth-pop, sassy turn-of-the-millennium girl groups, and state-of-the-art contemporary producers to create something distinctive and immediately memorable. She clearly understands the internet, having shared two original mixtapes and two influences mixtapes before her official full-length, but this carefully pruned set is no data dump. And there you'll see a glimmer of True Romance's most throwback aspect: its evident pop ambition, an overriding sense of an imagined mass audience for music that's radio-ready yet outsider-friendly. It's almost like Napster-- and the filler-crammed album sales model that preceded it-- never happened.
In fact, by the time Charli XCX was a teenage electro-house devotee, illegal file-sharing's early free-for-all had already given way to iTunes and other legal download services. Robyn had already released her self-titled comeback album. So it might be only natural that Charli XCX would keep the pre-bubble faith that people will pay for emotionally direct, bubblegum-catchy, yet stubbornly left-of-center songs about falling in and out of love. But the generous hooks on the previously released singles here, such as the gospel-kissed prechorus of the yearning Stay Away or the Santigold-savvy lilt of love-and-the-bomb brooder Nuclear Seasons, are extraordinarily welcome just the same. Even better are newer singles such as the gorgeously bitter You (Ha Ha Ha), which inhabits its cloud-rappy Gold Panda sample like they were made for each other, and the almost-as-gorgeously blissful What I Like, which recounts a still-young relationship with the cheeky frankness of Lily Allen or the Streets, and the sing-songy near-rapping of the Spice Girls.
The several songs on True Romance that hadn't previously surfaced in videos or other releases aren't quite as strong, but they're effective enough to suggest Charli XCX's best work might still be ahead of her. The Todd Rundgren-sampling So Far Away, with the sun-dappled lushness of the Avalanches, is a clear highlight; Charli XCX's vocals are usually plain-spoken, but the anguished break-up plea Set Me Free proves she can reach for Jessie Ware-like dramatics when appropriate. The pitch-shifting no one is forever intro added at the start of opener Nuclear Seasons probably should've been given its own track-- and later on the album it is, when the same backing vocal forms the base of the cloudy, broken-hearted Grins. Elsewhere, the haunted confession How Can I, while solid enough, is a reminder that Charli XCX's lyrics so far tend to fall relatively flat; when, on swooning finale Lock You Up, she sings, It hits me like a ton of bricks, she leaves the clichÉ untweaked.
And then there's Cloud Aura, a lovelorn, engagingly laid-back bit of groove that lets Grimes' Genesis video co-star Brooke Candy rap horribly about Chris Brown. Candy's guest verse previously appeared on 2012's uneven Super Ultra mixtape, and it was near-universally panned. It isn't any better now. But in an era when too many up-and-comers are all too eager to please, this stubborn refusal to back down displays another quality in short supply: genuine irreverence. The songwriting and production credits on True Romance include Usher's Climax co-conspirator Ariel Rechtshaid and I Love It collaborator Patrick Berger, among others, who also share some credit (and blame). But like 90s pop stars turned 10s pop sophisticates Justin Timberlake and BeyoncÉ, Charli XCX stamps her personality across the entire project, and True Romance suggests she'll be worth following for a while.

Unknown PleasuresFormed in 1977, Joy Division (guitarist Bernard Albrecht, bassist Peter Hook, drummer Stephen Morris, and vocalist Ian Curtis) helped usher in the Post-Punk movement with their haunting melodies and melancholy lyrics. By incorporating synthesizers into their music, they paved the way for an entire generation of bands who would soon follow in their footsteps. The band released two classic albums, 1979's Unknown Pleasures and 1980's Closer as well as several singles, before Curtis' suicide on the eve of their first American tour. Following Curtis' death, Albrecht (now Sumner), Hook, and Morris formed the band New Order, and would continue to record over the next twenty-five years.
It even looks like something classic, beyond its time or place of origin even as it was a clear product of both - one of Peter Saville's earliest and best designs, a transcription of a signal showing a star going nova, on a black embossed sleeve. If that were all Unknown Pleasures was, it wouldn't be discussed so much, but the ten songs inside, quite simply, are stone-cold landmarks, the whole album a monument to passion, energy, and cathartic despair. The quantum leap from the earliest thrashy singles to Unknown Pleasures can be heard through every note, with Martin Hannett's deservedly famous production - emphasizing space in the most revelatory way since the dawn of dub - as much a hallmark as the music itself. Songs fade in behind furtive noises of motion and activity, glass breaks with the force and clarity of doom, minimal keyboard lines add to an air of looming disaster - something, somehow, seems to wait or lurk beyond the edge of hearing. But even though this is Hannett's album as much as anyone's, the songs and performances are the true key. Sumner redefined heavy metal sludge as chilling feedback fear and explosive energy, Hook's instantly recognizable bass work at once warm and forbidding, Morris' drumming smacking through the speakers above all else. Curtis synthesizes and purifies every last impulse, his voice shot through with the desire first and foremost to connect, only connect - as Candidate plaintively states, I tried to get to you/you treat me like this. Pick any song, the nervous death dance of She's Lost Control, the harrowing call for release New Dawn Fades, all four members in perfect sync, the romance in hell of Shadowplay, Insight and its nervous drive towards some sort of apocalypse. HeartthrobWith Heartthrob, Tegan and Sara introduce a new kind of sound to their usual indie repertoire. "No one will confuse this with any of our other records," Sara says. "It's got a bigger, bolder, happier sound." Tegan is explicit about the supersized ambitions motivating the record. "I kept asking myself: Can I hear this in an arena? Can I hear this on a teenager's iPod as they're riding the bus to school?"
The new album doesn't just sound different, it represents a more collaborative way of making music. For the first time, the sisters actually wrote a lot of the songs together (in the past there were Tegan songs and Sara songs), and they surrendered more control than usual in the studio, dividing songs between 3 producers (Greg Kurstin, Justin Meldal-Johnsen, and Mike Elizondo) and a handful of outside musicians to capture the sound they were looking for. Tegan and Sara are both effusive about Kurstin's role in the process.
"We intentionally went looking for a producer who wouldn't dwell on protecting the signature Tegan and Sara sound," Tegan explains. Sara sums up Kurstin's role with a surprising metaphor: "Greg took everything we do and put it on steroids."
For all the superficial differences, though, Heartthrob bears the true hallmarks of a Tegan and Sara record. The songs are terrific, full of lust and longing and regret, bouncing between the familiar poles of erotic rapture ("Closer") and post-breakup despondency ("How Come You Don't Want Me"). But the lyrics seem less confessional than usual, a little more universal and philosophical, as if Tegan and Sara are reflecting on the experience of passion rather than undergoing its ecstasies and torments in real time. For every urgent outburst-"Does your body shake when you get around me? Does your body ache when you think about me?" ("I Couldn't Be Your Friend")-there's a moment of calm reflection, a retrospective clarity about past relationships: "When I think of you I think of your skin golden brown from the sun/Your arms outstretched your hair cut shorter than it'd been/But still blowing in the wind" ("Drove Me Wild"). There's a hard-won maturity in these lyrics, hidden beneath the glossy surface of the music, and a willingness to tackle subjects beyond the confines of romance. This is especially evident in the striking song, "I'm Not Your Hero," which examines the difficulty of maintaining artistic independence and personal autonomy in a politicized world: "I'm not their hero but that doesn't mean I wasn't brave/I never walked the party line doesn't mean that I was never afraid."
Heartthrob gives us Tegan and Sara in their superhero tights and capes, ready to conquer the pop universe, and the new outfits suit them just as well as their old-school jeans and T-shirts. Don't be surprised if you hear these songs in an arena, or blasting on a car radio, or leaking from a teenager's earbuds on a bus. That's what they're made for. And don't worry if you experience a brief sense of disorientation the first couple of times you hear them, a momentary inability to put a name to those familiar voices. By the time you realize who you're listening to, you'll already be singing along.

The album cover to Trust speaks volumes: Elvis Costello, bathed in shadows, his eyes nervously peering out from behind his sunglasses, his face conveying a combination of edgy noir purpose and guilt-ridden anxiety. Indeed, the tension-rich songs within largely convey the opposite meanings of the record's title, with the British icon musing on what lies beyond arrogant youth and immediate success with a jaundiced, scarred perspective informed by his country's political climate and his own experiences.
Of course, this being Costello and the Attractions, everything is wrapped into a catchy batch of songs that encourage listeners to hear them multiple times before they reveal their true intent. On Trust, almost nothing is what it seems, a condition that only enhances what remains the most diverse set of Costello's career. Mastered from the original master tapes and pressed at RTI, Mobile Fidelity's transparent analog reissue lets music lovers in on the secrets via unsurpassed clarity and breathtaking immediacy.
Whether the full, rounded tones of Bruce Thomas' bass or complete extension and decay of Steve Nieve's organ, every instrumental accent is delivered with lifelike detail and superb balance. Melodicas, drums, pianos, and guitars similarly come across faithfully and richly, the blend freed of constricting sonic veils and dynamic compression. Heard anew on this pressing, Trust emerges as one of the most satisfyingly complex and expertly played albums of its era. Costello's singing, too, reveals intricate tonal shadings and implied meanings, with slower tracks such as the hypnotic "Watch Your Step" and Tin Pan Alley-inspired solo tour de force "Shot With His Own Gun" ravishing with enhanced emotional investment.
As is often the case with great (and sophisticated) albums, Trust-which retains a five-star review from the most recent Rolling Stone Album Guide-didn't spawn any Top 40 hits at the time of its release. Yet age has been more than kind to the effort Costello said aimed to cross the rhythms of Get Happy!! with the melodies of Armed Forces, and which more than achieves the exacting goal. Admittedly made in a haze of booze and pills, the 1981 affair plumbs issues of disillusionment, romance, and sin with barbed wit and unvarnished honesty.
Country, soul, pop, rockabilly, two-step, punk-shot-through rock, jazz-Costello and the Attractions explore and master it all on Trust, all the while performing with an unencumbered directness and on-point coherence. No better example of the singer's simultaneous stylistic reach and virtuosity exists. Experience it like never before on this phenomenal-sounding pressing.

Among his insights, Costello explains how crafting the album forced him to be a better writer and singer - and a better listener, stating: Writing those first songs with Burt Bacharach required me to listen to what the music was really saying to me. Sometimes it was speaking so quietly that I needed to listen very intently. I needed time for the meaning and feeling that I sensed in the music to be confirmed by my own words. The strange thing was that the title of a song often came to me in an instant, but then would begin the more excruciating task of negotiating Burt's spacious melodies and rhythmic subtleties.

Jerry Lee Lewis was one of rock 'n' roll's brightest stars - and one of its first casualties. Ten years after his career imploded, he spectacularly remade himself in country music. Altogether, he scored more than 40 country hits, in addition to era-defining rock classics like "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On" and "Great Balls of Fire." Those early rock 'n' roll hits were produced by Sam Phillips at Sun Records in Memphis.
Jerry Lee left Sun in 1963, but, like Elvis, returned often. By the mid-1970s, the studio was run by Sam Phillips' son, Knox, who produced one of the era's biggest hits: the Amazing Rhythm Aces' "Third Rate Romance." Like his father, Knox intuitively understood how to produce Jerry Lee Lewis, allowing him free rein to plunder his subconscious for half-forgotten songs and reimagine them as Jerry Lee Lewis songs, just as he'd done with "Whole Lotta Shakin'" twenty years earlier.
Over the course of several late nights in the 1970s, Knox recorded Jerry Lee Lewis as he crossed the breadth of American music from Stephen Foster to Jim Croce's still-current hit "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown." Call By NightWymond Miles was raised in the working-class small towns of the American
West. On Call by Night, the singer's latest widescreen opus, Miles masterfully
evokes that lost landscape, all while grappling with issues of fatherhood, privacy,
PTSD, violence, and dissipated romance. The album adds a critical new chapter
to the Fresh & Onlys guitarist's story as an artist, and reasserts him as a major
voice in contemporary songwriting.
Call by Night sees Miles building a noticeably bigger sound than on his previous
solo records, while simultaneously standing as his most intimate work. It's a
record explicitly written for the fidelity of the vinyl format, with louder songs
beginning each album side and quieter songs at the interior. His attention to
sequencing paid off; the album flows like a piece of classic cinema, and sounds
like it's splashed across a drive-in screen in 70mm. Recorded using vintage gear
by Phil Manley (The Fucking Champs, Trans Am) at El Studio in San Francisco
and Miles' Garden Chamber home studio, the record is a treasure of tube-amp
warmth, and a landmark in the songwriter's catalog.
Miles wrote most of Call by Night on piano, and while the wall-of-sound guitar
and cinematic synth playing that helped define his earlier efforts is still present,
the beating heart of the songs is left more open thanks to his new method. Where
previous full-lengths were cloaked in distinct aesthetic choices, this record exists
outside of any stylistic restraints. "Divided in Two," the lead single, considers
dignity, class, honor, and father-son relationships through the devastating lens of
PTSD, all set to a sardonic flag-waving waltz, with martial percussive bomb blasts.
The title track explores the enduring aesthetic of British psych-folk. Other songs
dip into the traditions of gospel music, sea shanties, and even big-box power
ballads, using antique instruments and Miles' unique perspective on the modern
world to forge a new collection of entries for the American songbook.
Miles has said the songs on Call by Night mark his "more definitive commitment
to seek, listen, and give voice to an enduring muse." If that's true, then the muse

Though it was directed by Tony Scott, the 1993 film True Romance displayed all the signature themes and images of its writer, Quentin Tarantino, from its grisly violence to its B-movie homages to its gleeful amorality. And the same could be said of the soundtrack; alongside composer Hans Zimmer's riff on Carl Orff (which itself was an homage to another violent road movie, Badlands), True Romance offered a playlist that smacked of Tarantino in its embrace of rockabilly (Charlie Sexton, Chris Isaak), grunge (Soundgarden), honky-tonk (Shelby Lynne), and romantic machismo (Robert Palmer's take on [Love Is] The Tender Trap).
Vinyl would seem a natural for such a "warped" soundtrack; yet, outside of a very limited South Korean edition of dubious origin, the soundtrack to True Romance has never made it to LP. So how does a reissue label rectify this grievous oversight? With a bang!
