    Breakfast At Tiffany's (Speakers Corner)

    Long nights, dizzy parties, a variety of men-friends, and breakfast standing before the window display of the famed jewellery company govern the life of the dazzling Holly Golightly, who has in reality a very ordinary name and poverty-stricken background. All the more rich is the musical carpet that Henry Mancini lays beneath the feet of the exotic, wealthy-husband-seeking socialite. The tender, plaintive worldwide hit Moon River apart, Mancini and his Hollywood musicians mix a sugar-sweet sound with enough acrid elements to glaze over the capricious lady's character. The cool big band sound is spiced with a bold trumpet solo (The Big Blow Out) and mellow violins with a suspiciously tame male choir (Breakfast At Tiffany's). As is well known, there is a great deal of dancing in the film, including a number with a Latin-American rhythm (Latin Golightly), and a grooving mambo (Loose Caboose). At the end of the film even the Moon River swells to become a bubbling cha-cha, as though to say that a 'happy end' must in no way sound sentimental.

    About Speakers Corner



    At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.



    During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.



    A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.



    We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.



    We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.



    To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Doxy present a picture disc reissue of Henry Mancini's soundtrack for Breakfast at Tiffany's, originally released in 1961. In a career spanning over four decades, composer, conductor and arranger Enrico Henry Mancini (1924-1994) won numerous Academy and Grammy awards for his scores to well-known films and television series, including The Pink Panther, Hatari! (1962), Two For The Road (1967), Wait Until Dark (1967), Peter Gunn (1967), and of course, 1961's Breakfast at Tiffany's (which alone won five Grammys and two Oscars). The Breakfast at Tiffany's soundtrack is probably best remembered for Audrey Hepburn's legendary performance of Mancini's Moon River (lyrics by Johnny Mercer), which won an Academy Award for Best Song that year. Moon River went on to become one of the best loved songs of all time, but it first made its appearance here, in Breakfast at Tiffany's. Edition of 500.

    Coming off a double Oscar win for his Breakfast at Tiffany's score, Henry Mancini produced this score for the Howard Hawks-directed, John Wayne-starring safari comedy Hatari!.


    This is at first a fun blend of jazz and Afro-exotica, jungle drums mixed with a classic bop combo. Elsewhere, however, the soundtrack opts for some pleasant, but very Western jazz, only stopping for the African instrument-sampler 'The Sounds of Hatari,' which features some nice treated piano. The filmmakers were probably hoping that the Mercer and Carmichael song 'Just for Tonight' would be as much a success as Tiffany's 'Moon River,' but if Hatari! is memorable for anything, it's for the incredibly goofy 'Baby Elephant Walk,' which has gone on to be infamous musical shorthand for kookiness of any stripe. - AllMusic.com.

    June Carter Cash has lived a charmed life: as a child member of her name-sake kin, The Carter Family, late-night duets with Elvis Presley, a movie appearance with Robert Duvall, romance with James Dean, and a Grammy Award-winning performing and songwriting career with her husband Johnny Cash.



    But, to hear her sing such moving hymns as Diamonds in the Rough is to enjoy the holy, country hospitality of a simple countrywoman of a pure and spiritual heart. On Press On are other such gems as a touching, acoustic version of Ring of Fire, which June co-wrote. Throughout this album, June plays the Autoharp, a type of strummed dulcimer that lends a light, bouncy feel to these pieces that often contain no traditional rhythm section. She displays a worldly sensibility on such folk-rock numbers as the bitter Losin You and humor mixed with wisdom in Tiffany Anastasia Lowe,a song for her granddaughter, the child of daughter Carlene Carter and husband Nick Lowe. June concludes this warm and personal release as she began it, with a moving spiritual rendition of her familys standard, Will the Circle Be Unbroken.



    Press On was originally released in 1999 on the tiny Risk Records label. The album immediately garnered tremendous press accolades, culminating with a Grammy award that year. Risk Records went under shortly after release and Press On has been out of print ever since. Dualtone is proud to make this album available on vinyl for the very first time. Press On features guest performances from Johnny Cash, Marty Stuart, Rodney Crowell and Norman Blake.

    The film director Blake Edwards brought into existence what is probably the best opening sequence to his comic crime film when he commissioned a young enterprising company to produce an animated Pink Panther cartoon film. The creative team came up with the idea of giving the cold, glittering diamond the guise of a cool, pink panther, which leads a bungling detective on a merry dance to the slinky sound of the Panther theme.



    Mancini would not be Mancini if he did not bathe the film location - the skiing resort Cortina d'Ampezzo -in highly varied musical colours and genres. His well-known love for dance music finds itself in the samba (It Had Better Be Tonight), the shuffle (Champagne And Quail), and the cha-cha (Something For Sellers). But also the ballad, sung by a muted trumpet and saxophone (Royal Blue), or the simple combination of keyboard and strings (Piano And Strings) are all woven into the story. One of the most memorable and delightful sounds is that of the accordion, whose melodies evoke an atmosphere that is filled with the Bohème, Paris and the sound of the musette. This music is never gaudy, but subtle, just like a panther padding quietly along. And if your appetite is now whetted for more, there is an extra portion of Mancini to be found in Breakfast At Tiffany's (RCA LSP 2362).

    Beyond The Bloodhounds

    Adia Victoria spent the last few years writing, recording, touring and performing, while entrenched in the infamous artist R&R world - restaurants and retail work. Day jobs at a laundry list of Nashville it and not so it spots gave the musician lots of people watching time as well as the mental and emotional space to marinate in her art.


    Adia blows the social hush-hush lid off the mental and emotional state of a young black woman growing up under the poverty line in the Deep South and all the implications of such. No pretense. No jive. But also, like the writing of Eudora Welty and Tennessee Williams, there is plenty of Southern Gothic styled, marrow deep joy.


    In a recent feature story, Fader encouraged us to, Meet Adia Victoria, A Poet Making Country Music a Little Creepier. She is found in album cuts like Sea of Sand and Stuck in the South, revealing some of her place-based aha moments. In the latter, she notes, I don't know nothin' about Southern belles/ But I can tell you something about Southern hell. As songs like Head Rot, and first single Dead Eyes show us, Adia says, it's an album of falling in love, dealing with loss, confusion, anger, love, and loving myself.


    Produced by Roger Moutenot (Yo La Tengo, Sleater Kinney) and the artist herself, recorded at Nashville, Tennessee's Haptown Studios, Beyond the Bloodhounds features the indelible lyrics, voice, and guitar solos of Adia Victoria along with a band of talented musicians including Tiffany Minton (Drums), Alex Caress (keys), Mason Hickman (guitar), and Jason Harris (bass). She recalls, the studio is a Music City treasure. It used to be a car repair shop. You walk in and there are no windows. It's dark and moody. It feels like walking into the mind.


    The result of a lifetime of introspection and a younger self marked by silent observation, Adia Victoria's Beyond the Bloodhounds was three active, recording years in the making. The title pays homage to a line in Harriet Jacobs' Narrative in the Life of a Slave Girl.


    Ultimately, Victoria's debut album is more both/and, than either/or. The complexity of her Southern, barrel-aged roots and world traveling, bookworm woman ways will lure you out of the status quo.


    Publications like American Songwriter, Rookie, and NPR are taking notice.


    Now on the brink of her 30s, fluent in the language of her own self, Adia Victoria stands poised to take her place in a line of true artists. Her mother warned that she feels too much and would be torn up by the world. Adia will tell you that proved to be true. I've felt shredded, but I'm now blessed to embrace the intense feelings as part of my job. That's what I do. It's my bread and butter. My art depends on me feeling and experiencing.     For the past four years, Follow That Bird was one of the most buzzed about bands from their hometown of Austin, Texas. And considering how many bands are packed into that one city, that ain't faint praise. They were picked by Matador Records to be the lead single on the 2010 Austin-only compilation Casual Victim Pile, and snapped up enough accolades to have Bill Callahan have them support him on tour and ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead ask them to be the opening act on their full tour of the Western US last summer.


    After that...everything went a little awry. The band's label folded, taking with it the money promised them to record their debut full-length. But instead of seeing that as a major roadblock, the trio saw it as the perfect chance to forge their own path. With it came a new band name - Mirror Travel - and a chance to further strengthen their belief in the power of the music they were creating together. Or as Tiffanie Lanmon put it, We had to walk into the desert and do things our way.


    The desert Lanmon (drums) is referring to is the one that surrounds Marfa, Texas, where the she, Paul Brinkley (bass/vocals) and Lauren Green (guitar/vocals) decamped for two weeks to record with Gory Smelley (YACHT, Eleanor Friedberger, Grouper) at Marfa Recording Studio. It was just the isolating experience the band needed to bring their album Mexico into the world.


    The results? One of the most warmly engaging records you're likely to hear this year. With Smelley's help, Mirror Travel were able to more fully embrace the dreamy garage pop sound that got them to where they are today.


    Opener Sands may give the impression of a band lost in a shoegazer wilderness, but let the punchy Nuggets-style bassline and reverb-slathered drive of the next track I Want You To Know shove aside all those preconceptions. The rest of Mexico flows by with the same steady gaze and attack, with occasional upticks and dips in tempo and temperature.


    Looked at as a complete package, Mexico is a document of a trio who, as their name change would suggest, are taking themselves more seriously and looking at the road ahead with much more purpose and intent. Like the long drives between tour stops and the seemingly endless desert that helped inspire these songs, you're meant to drink this album in slowly, steadily, and with your eye fixed on the horizon.

    If the recognition of one's peers is the true measure of success, then few men are as successful as composer, arranger, and conductor Henry Mancini. In a career that spanned 40 years, writing for film and television, Mancini won four Oscars and twenty Grammys, the all-time record for a pop artist. Plus he received a posthumous Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1995.


    Mancini's best-known works include the jazz-idiom theme to The Pink Panther film series (The Pink Panther Theme), his Moon River to Breakfast at Tiffany's, and the theme to the Peter Gunn television series. The Peter Gunn Theme won the first Grammy Award for Album of the Year. Mancini also had a long collaboration on film scores with the film director Blake Edwards.

    Sometimes you have to rip it up and start again. It was a tough
    call for Dee Dee. Dum Dum Girls was her guise for most of a
    decade, an outlet through which she's crafted a resonant,
    instantly-identifiable body of work. Over the course of three
    albums, four EPs, and an array of singles, Dum Dum Girls
    morphed from the girl-group-gone-bad moves of their 2010
    debut, I Will Be, to the plush noir-pop of 2014's Too True, a dark
    heart burning bright. But as her music evolved, she found that for
    many she would be forever refracted through the prism of Dum
    Dum Girls' early work: retro-leaning female harmonies, a
    backdrop of lo-fi, fuzzed up guitars.


    In 2015, she decided to shed her skin, ditching Dee Dee for her
    real name, Kristin, and adding Kontrol. It was a spontaneous idea
    that resonated. The challenge was to start fresh, go further back
    into her relationship to music. Sweep all her loves together into
    one genreless experience. "The first music I felt was mine was
    classic 80s pop and 90s R&B, from Tiffany, Janet Jackson and
    Madonna to TLC, SWV, and Aaliyah," she says. "But for years I
    was hellbent on the rock'n'roll thing, revering Joan Jett, Patti
    Smith, Chrissie Hynde, -- a rebellion against her classical vocal
    training -- but I was like, fuck it, I'm just going to try it all. I'm
    going to pretend I'm Kate Bush covering Mariah.


    Refocused and inspired, Kristin wrote 62 songs, whittled the list
    to ten for X-Communicate, and finished the album with the help
    of new producers Kurt Feldman (who had produced her Christmas
    single a few years back) and Andrew Miller (who played
    guitar on the first Dum Dum Girls album and had joined the band
    in its last incarnation).


    Arguably the biggest shift, beyond the music itself, is that as
    Kristin Kontrol she tells her stories using a sonic palette splashed
    with bold pop melodies, her vocals showcasing a range hitherto
    unexplored on record. The songs that emerge from Kristin's
    universe -- a menagerie of new wave and R&B, European synth
    pop, and experimental disco -- are both familiar and unique,
    using genre rather than adhering to it, with a distinct nod to the
    present. It may be a leap into the unknown, but "little risk means
    little reward," as Karen O once counseled her. I feel free. I kind
    of excommunicated myself. Even if I have to rebuild my whole
    career, I'd rather work hard than feel stagnant. I feel excited
    again, and that's priceless.
