Through The Past'
Through The Past, Darkly (Big Hits Vol 2) (Awaiting Repress)
180 Gram Clear Vinyl
This album was spawned by three coinciding events -- the need to acknowledge the death of band co-founder Brian Jones (whose epitaph graces the inside cover) in July of 1969; the need to get Honky Tonk Women, then a huge hit single, onto an LP; and to fill the ten-month gap since the release of Beggars Banquet and get an album with built-in appeal into stores ahead of the Stones' first American tour in three years. The fact that the Stones had amassed a sufficient number of hits since their last greatest-hits compilation in early 1966 (Big Hits: High Tide and Green Grass) made this a no-brainer, and its song lineup was as potent at the time as any compilation of hit singles by any artist. From the group's excursions into fey psychedelia (Paint It, Black, Ruby Tuesday, She's a Rainbow, Dandelion), space rock (2000 Light Years From Home), punk decadence (Mother's Little Helper), and back to straight-ahead rock & roll (Jumpin' Jack Flash), some of it with a topical edge (Street Fighting Man), it's all incredibly potent, though also redundant to the extent that Ruby Tuesday and Let's Spend the Night Together had previously appeared on two U.S. albums. The presence of Honky Tonk Women propelled it to gold record status upon release on both sides of the Atlantic, although the simultaneously released British version (long out of print, except as a bootleg CD) is different and more confusing, but also more diverse and rewarding musically than the American version. Both this album and Big Hits: High Tide and Green Grass have been supplanted by Hot Rocks and More Hot Rocks, but are still handy in their tight respective focuses.

Past Time (On Sale)Bassist/vocalist, Hannah Lew, drummer/vocalist, Lillian Maring and guitarist/vocalist,
Raven Mahon chose the name for their San Francisco-based three-piece as a way to
represent the approach they take to writing music. The phrase is rooted in 17th century
literature; commonly referring to a woman whose husband is away at sea, but the visual
associations of each word also provides an opportunity to interpret meaning on multiple
levels. We write lyrics about very personal and often dark subjects, but present the
ideas in a way that disguises the content within metaphor and upbeat instrumentation.
Influenced by similarly all-female punk and post-punk acts like The Neo Boys and
Kleenex, they also note Roy Wood's The Move and The Kinks as a major source of
inspiration, which can be heard in their three-part harmonies, complex arrangements
and odd chord progressions. Grass Widow is also influenced by a legacy of women
who have paved the way through their music and politics. Their collaborative
songwriting process, the fact that they don't have a front person and that they all equally
contribute to the work of the band speaks to this philosophy. In addition, they take the
opportunity as an all female band to bring attention to the roles of spectacle and
spectator in their scene and make a conscious effort to play shows where women are
In a statement from the band: We want to thrive in our scene as musicians, with a
focus on our musicianship first, not our gender. Our goal is to normalize the role of
gender in our craft and have an avenue to express our intelligence and our love of
music. We acknowledge that movements of the past created by or affecting women in
the art and music worlds are hugely influential, but there is potential for the original
sentiments to lose potency if the meaning is misinterpreted or not redesigned for a
modern context. Even the riot grrl movement is kind of antiquated. You never really
hear people talk about that 'new riot grrl' band. We owe a great deal to that lineage but
it's time for something new. We want to be portrayed as the responsible, thoughtful
people that we are.1. Uncertain Memory

REDD-HOU-4007xPhilip H. Anselmo
Walk Through Exits OnlyWalk Through Exits Only is the career-first solo album from Philip Anselmo, legendary frontman of Pantera and Down.
Produced by Philip Anselmo and Michael Thompson, and recorded over the past couple of years at his New Orleans studio, Nodferatu's Lair, with his band The Illegals - Marzi Montazeri/guitar, and drummer Jose Manuel Blue Gonzales, Walk Through Exits Only is abrasive, aggressive, anthemic and 100% Anselmo. The album's eight songs are as unstrained as it gets, from Battalion of Zero to Usurper's Bastard Rant, to the album's title track that goes against the grain and right through the exits. Brash, brutal guitars cut through punishing percussion as Anselmo screams with uncompromising ferocity and uncontainable fire.
It wasn't about doing a paint-by-numbers thrash or heavy metal record, Anselmo explained about the project. It's an angry album that only I could do. I don't see anybody else out there screaming about the same shit I'm screaming about. On this album, there isn't any wordplay, there isn't any hidden message, it's all right there in front of you.
On Walk Through Exits Only and over his entire career, Anselmo hasn't just paved his own path, he's bulldozed it with his bare hands.1. Music Media Is My Whore

ADAD-TEM-6611xThree Mile Pilot
The Inevitable Past Is The Future ForgottenThe rumor of a new Three Mile Pilot album has been circulating for over a decade, further fueling the mystery and mythology that has swirled around the San Diego trio since the 1997 release of what was thought to be their swan song, the enormously influential Another Desert, Another Sea.
That brings us to the aptly-named The Inevitable Past Is The Future Forgotten, the first Three Mile Pilot album in 13 years and the first to be written, performed, recorded and produced entirely by the original three members in their own home studios. As such it is the most uncompromising album since their inception, it also just happens to be their most accessible. While Pinback and The Black Heart Procession were obviously influenced by 3MP in their early days, the inverse can now be heard, with many of the songs on The Inevitable Past bearing the unmistakable and inevitable stamps of Pinback and The Black Heart Procession. This circular influence is what makes the album so brilliant; instead of a proper hiatus, 3MPs progression was charted vicariously through its members other groups. As such, The Inevitable Past makes good on the promising glimpses heard through a long but breathless wait.1. Battle

Through Low Light And TreesIt's already been a very exciting 12 months for British duo Smoke Fairies (Jessica Davies & Katherine Blamire) and now they are set to release their critically acclaimed debut full-length Through Low Light And Trees. After 3 well received and now highly collectible 7 singles released in their native England, Smoke Fairies flew to Nashville to records their 4th by invitation from Jack White. The resulting Gastwon/River Song 7 single was released on Jack's own Third Man Records in early 2010. A limited edition vinyl compilation of their UK singles soon followed entitled Ghosts: A Compilation of A-Sides, B-Sides and an EP from the Recent Past.
Their new album, Through Low Light And Trees smoulders with an honest, often painful emotional intimacy. A lot of our songs are drawn from the experience of traveling around and leaving, or feeling distant and out of place, and the heartache that comes from looking back and longing. explains Katherine. The result is an exquisite blend of alternative folk-rock, without doubt, a more humid, bluesy brand of the genre; a sound that is both eerily ancient and thrillingly modern.1. Summer Fades

Roadsinger (To Warm You Through The NIght)With his reintroduction to the pop world behind him, renowned singer-songwriter Yusuf (the artist known as Cat Stevens) is ready to once again strike up an intimate relationship with his audience. After retreating from the pop stage following classic '70s multi-platinum albums such as Tea For The Tillerman and Teaser And The Firecat and acclaimed hits such as Wild World, Peace Train, Moonshadow, Morning Has Broken and Father And Son, Yusuf returned in late 2006 with his first pop album in 28 years. Now he's back again with a second album, Roadsinger (To Warm You Through The Night).
I was absent from my audience for so long, Yusuf says, people thought another album would never come. The 2006 album, An Other Cup, was a surprise. With this new album, the distance is much less. I'm back to doing what I do best, painting pictures with music and storytelling on a very human, personal, intuitive level through lyrics and song, so I can help people feel good again. I guess in some ways the new album picks up where the Cat Stevens the public knows left off.
The album, Roadsinger (To Warm You Through The Night), was produced by the now singularly named Yusuf with help from Martin Terefe (James Morrison, Jason Mraz, Martha Wainwright), and recorded around the world. Guests include Morrison, Michelle Branch and Holly Williams (granddaughter of Hank Williams, Sr.).
The new album is a response to the way An Other Cup was received, Yusuf explains. Fans said they wanted to hear more of me with a guitar. So, this album is much more folk-tale oriented. Also, apart from one track, all of it was recorded live. I listened to a lot of' '70s L.A. music, such as Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Carole King, and it inspired me to go back into that intimate style of recording. The songs are somewhat autobiographical but abstract enough so everyone can relate to them and connect them to their own lives.
The title track, Roadsinger, unfolds the tale of an outcast who revisits his old hometown; along the empty street a child peeks from behind a store window and gives an innocent smile out of the shadows of prejudice. The theme of a journey has always been big with me, says Yusuf. A journey that was unexpectedly cut short in 2004 was when Yusuf was flying from his London home to Washington, D.C., en route to a meeting with Dolly Parton, who had recorded Peace Train several years earlier and wanted Yusuf to play guitar on her cover of his Where Do the Children Play. The incident that made headlines was resolved in 2006 and Yusuf's new song Boots and Sand resulted.
There are plenty people who sing, but not enough who have walked far from their block, he says. I embraced an unexpected spiritual path that was confusing for many (converting to Islam in 1977). Sadly, I'm still often misunderstood. Some people want to put me into their own one-sided view, but I don't fit those limitations. My world is still borderless and wide. The removal of conflict and establishment of peace has always been my global objective. It's a shame that lot of people, including some Muslims, overlook the name Islam, which actually comes from the word 'Peace' in Arabic.
The forthcoming album also showcases some songs from his upcoming musical Moonshadow. The story takes place on a planet of perpetual night where only the moon's shine lights the darkness; it is about a boy's meeting with his Moonshadow and the adventures they share in search for the a world of the sunlight and happiness. As well as having many new songs, the surrealistic musical, Moonshadow also weaves classic songs from his past, including Morning Has Broken, Wild World and The First Cut Is The Deepest.
Yusuf's return to his guitar came about when his teenage artist-musician son, Muhammad (aka Yoriyos), brought one home again. One morning, Yusuf was alone in the lounge when he looked over and felt a draw of curiosity overtake him. He slowly picked it up. I put my fingers on the fretboard to make a 'C' chord, he remembers, and surprised myself, It's still there! It felt right. So I started playing again. On the forthcoming album, Yusuf even plays electric guitar on a couple of tracks, along with keyboards. This part of my career feels similar in one sense to when I began, Yusuf reflects. I had to get past the songs on Mona Bone Jakon before I could move on to Tea For The Tillerman, etc. This time around it was the same story: I laid the groundwork with my debut album, An Other Cup, which inspired a great new collection of songs and scribblings. I had quite a few in my back pocket and again it was my son who sparked the next step. He said, 'Isn't it time to start recording a new album?' And it was.

Ride Your HeartOn the heels of three well-received singles comes Ride Your Heart, the bombastic debut album by LA band Bleached. Sisters Jennifer and Jessie Clavin match their ability to blend a mix of freewheeling '77 punk with vintage sunny Southern California melodic rock and roll; creating blindingly bright hooks and dark heartfelt lyrics about love, loss, and the crazy fun moments in between. That's the goal: the sugary and sour, repurposed by two aggressively harmonic musicians and songwriters. Their first single Next Stop epitomizes this movement - fun, raw, adventurous and free. Tossing you out onto the dance floor, hair mussed from make-outs, cigarette still dangling from your fingertips.
As a whole, the twelve tracks on Ride Your Heart reveal the many facets of Bleached's music in a delicious vortex of playful harmonies, tangled guitars, and golden noise. Each song brings a new element, while also imbibing the classic moods of bands as varied and iconic in nature as The Ramones and The Cars to The Rolling Stones and Fleetwood Mac. From the syncopated backbeat and two-part chorus of Dead In Your Head,, the rolling riffs and sparkling melodies of Searching Through The Past and the pulsating energy and urgency of Dreaming Without You and Outta My Mind, Bleached take you on a sweeping emotional roller coaster that churns and burns. Exclusively For My Friends (On Sale)Oscar Peterson has stated that he feels his MPS recordings are his finest. That is quite a statement considering the huge amount of records that the pianist has produced through the past 50 years. This set reissues the music from six of his MPS LPs: Action, Girl Talk, The Way I Really Play, My Favorite Instrument, Mellow Mood, and Travelin' On. While some of the performances feature the 1963 trio he had with bassist Ray Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen, most of the music dates from 1967-1968 and matches Peterson with bassist Sam Jones and either Louis Hayes or Bobby Durham on drums. A special treat is Peterson's first unaccompanied solo album... Peterson's many fans know what to expect in this set, while other listeners need to discover him to realize what all of the fuss was about. Quite simply, Oscar Peterson has long been one of the greatest pianists the world has ever known; this reissue offers plenty of proof.

An adaptation of the Thomas Pynchon novel of the same name, Inherent Vice, which will be released by Warner Bros. From his legendary output with the band Spacek - Curvatia (2001), Vintage Hi-Tech (2003); solo work on the cult Sound In Color imprint and collaborations with the late, great J.Dilla; to his under-the-radar Black Pocket project for dBridge's Exit Records and his most recent work with Mark Pritchard as one half of Africa HiTech, his fearless approach to creation has always been progressive and highly original.
Beat Spacek sees him once again take the reigns as a solo artist creating a record that is as much a love letter to the future as it is an ode to the past. Created largely using iPhone and iPad apps, the album once again finds Steve liberated through new technologies, excited by the prospects of "the new" whilst expressing notions of the past. It's a journey through the evolution of modern Britain from a futurist perspective.
Framed against a particular period in the 1980s when Steve was growing up as a young man in New Cross, South East London, Modern Streets is rooted in the duality of the past and the future. Flim-Flams was the club where he first experienced the clash of sounds and styles that characterised South London's racial, ethnic and cultural melting pot. A spot where Punks, Soul Heads, New Romantics, Dread Locks and Skinheads all converged brought together through a love of music and new sounds.
From the paranoid, post-punk, sleng teng musings of I Wanna Know to the nu wave pop-powered love song Inflight Wave, Modern Streets is a direct reflection of that experience, envisioned through the mind of a 21st Century Rudeboy. Ghanaian Highlife is re-imagined in digital form on Tonight; Stand Firm tips its hat to the dancehall with a futuristic rinse; whilst the sub-bass powered anthem Alone in Da Sun draws on the finest elements of dubstep's sonic vocabulary and reworks them into a loose, new age club jam, brimming with soul and charisma.1. Gold NightsFemale/male duo White Hex (Tara Green and Jimi Kritzler)
released their debut album Heat in 2012 released on Avant!
Records. 2014 sees their return with the follow up full-length,
Gold Nights. The album is the second in a series of three
thematically connected records which is based on a period of
three years. The album's themes include tackling the deaths of
friends over the past few years and somehow staying optimistic
through that loss.
Recorded after shows in Paris, Berlin, New York and Melbourne,
Gold Nights explores Italo disco, minimalist techno and the more
primitive end of 1980's German underground. They embrace their
love of high fashion, 1980's New York vogue techno and the
mutant explorations of Whitehouse, Arthur Russell, Craig Leon
and Gianni Rossi. Gold Nights retains certain elements of their
beloved debut, but moves in a more sophisticated direction as a
result of White Hex's vision and with the help of producer Alex
Akers (Forces-Siberia Records).1. Only A Game

Pale HorsesIt's impossible to imagine modern underground music without mewithoutYou: the influence of their fifteen-year legacy has been nothing less than seismic. Pale Horses, mewithoutYou's sixth album, continues their unwavering artistic vision, while at the same time reinvents the band as uniquely as any of their fans would expect it to. Aaron Weiss has again produced a work of genius with his nonpareil poetic voice, rivaled only by the soundtrack the rest of his band has forced him to compete against through these eleven songs. The end result is a beautiful fusion not unlike the music found on the band's most revered releases. The guitar work is precise: delicately soft and tender during lulling moments like the opener "Pale Horse" and fiercely riff-centric on the Brother, Sister reminiscent "Mexican War Streets." Complimenting it is the constant combination of the catchiest bass lines you've ever heard and tasteful, steady drum grooves that harken back to Catch Us For the Foxes, the band's revered second album that has sold over 50 thousand copies to date. The warm, folk leanings ever-present on past albums shine through on the gentle "Magic Lantern Days" and the swirling organs of the heartbreaking story told throughout "Dorothy." Epic in scope, Pale Horses is an emotional journey as captivating as any of their classic releases - referential to the best parts of their catalog with a distinguished vitality, captured in the band's signature hauntingly iconic way.1. Hail DeathBlowing minds and eardrums since forming in 2007, BLACK ANVIL's third full-length album, aptly titled Hail Death, is their most epic and fully realized album to date. It's one of those rare releases that not only stays true to the band's roots but manages to transcend them in a way that works all of their seemingly disparate influences into an amalgam of heavy music that's as original as it is earth-shaking. The sonic fury was captured at Magpie Cage by J. Robbins of Jawbox, who, although best known for recording punk and post-hardcore acts, perfectly understood the band's creative vision. He's got a really good style of making records and I knew he would understand that we wanted to make this sound live and organic as opposed to tight and compressed, relays bassist/vocalist Paul Delaney, citing Kiss' Destroyer and Metallica's Master Of Puppets as inspiration. I wanted it to be a little more rock 'n' roll sounding because I felt the songs were a little bigger and structured. It tells a story from beginning to end and the recording reflects that. As such, the behemoth offering includes a bonus track: A BLACK ANVILed cover of Under The Rose from Kiss' iconic ninth studio recording, The Elder.
Hail Death wasn't an easy album to make and the band members' personal turmoil is reflected in every frenzied moment of the album. I went through a lot of stuff over the past year and it caused me to move and spend a year of my life in solitude, Delaney says, explaining that for twelve months he would sit in his room and pour all of his energy and inner chaos into these songs. This is our journey. I can honestly say that this is probably the most important thing I've ever done in my life, even if it never sees the light of day for some reason I'm insanely proud of it.1. StiffThree years on from their critically acclaimed "barbeque" record Corsicana Lemonade, White Denim are back with more than just a new album to commemorate. Their sixth record, Stiff - out 25 March 2016 via Downtown/Sony Red - is a return to the Austin quartet's frenetic rock band roots, and is both a jubilant thrill ride and joyous celebration of their past ten years. Heading into the studio with an external producer to oversee a whole album for the first time - and even writing a tune with Cass McCombs ('Thank You') - the band teamed up with the legendary Ethan Johns (Paul McCartney, Laura Marling, The Staves) to produce their first truly live record, one teeming with a cool '70s undertow, tumultuous riffs and a feverish energy that's resulted in arguably some of their biggest and brawniest songs to date.
With drummer Joshua Block and guitarist Austin Jenkins now pursuing other production ventures, vocalist/guitarist James Petralli and bassist Steve Terebecki spent a long time reassessing exactly what White Denim meant to them. "The big thing for Steve and I was trying to define what made us want to keep going," Petralli explains of the album's early days. "What's our partnership about? What's cool about this? We learnt a lot making D and Corsicana Lemonade. We wanted to take some of those lessons and apply it back to our original mission statement. We were trying to get back to some of the things that made us excited about the band in the first place."
Opener 'Had 2 Know (Personal)' is the embodiment of that mission statement. Described by Petralli as "a reassertion of our initial intent to make songs that satisfy our urge to play fast", it sets the tone brilliantly for the bulk of Stiff, right from its idiosyncratic, Red Krayola-sampling beginning to its huge, golden era chorus. While it remains distinctively White Denim, there's a reinvigoration permeating through its riffs via new guitarist Jonathan Horne and a beefed-up rhythm section thanks to the work of new drummer Jeffrey Olson. Every single high octane turn - from the tremendously fun 'Ha Ha Ha Ha (Yeah)' to the outrageously shredding 'Holda You (I'm Psycho)' - sounds like a band re-energised and revitalised, resulting in what Petralli describes as a "high heat, high energy, good times record". Having previously sold out Shepherd's Bush Empire and having toured with Tame Impala and Arctic Monkeys, Stiff is full to the brim with songs that sound ready to now lift White Denim to similar heights.
For the most part, Stiff is an album crammed with adrenaline-fuelled sing-alongs that show off the band's staple technical abilities. But it's also one that sees some new shades that they've developed along the way, too. Citing new wave and the razor-sharp pop punk of Buzzcocks as influences this time round, there's an addictive Elvis Costello circa This Year's Model quality to 'Real Deal Momma', a tune that highlights the band's love for hummable synthesisers and curious, affecting oddities. Then there's the cow bell calm and backing vocals laden brilliance of 'I'm The One (Big Big Fun)', that along with 'Take It Easy (Ever After Lasting Love)' (a song Petralli says "wants to be on a collection of doo wop songs written in 2016") shows a softer and more intricate side to the band while fully emphasising Petralli's vocal excellence.
Of the artwork - which was created by collagist Eugenia Loli - was inspired and worked from the band's previous album covers and videos as a visual template. Ultimately, it's a fleeting visit to a place the band have been before, with the covers of Workout Holiday and D being collages too. Stiff was even originally stylised 'Stif', which when spelt backwards spells out the title of their second full-length Fits. Then there's 'Mirrored In Reverse', a nod to the Fits track 'Mirrored And Reverse'. "I mean, we're ten!" Petralli says in disbelief while explaining all of the record's throwbacks. "We did think about naming this record Ten and referencing the Pearl Jam cover!"
Recorded with nothing but equipment that Petralli describes as being "past a certain point in the '70s", he explains that Stiff is an album made "entirely the old way". "It was tracked live to 16-track tape with very little overdubs," he says. "It was very hardcore record making - traditional in every aspect." Recorded with Ethan Johns in Asheville, North Carolina over a twenty-day period, Petralli and the band had an intense but deeply educational time with Johns. "It was really cool. The guy had these stories that were just unbelievable. He started talking about playing with Jimmy Page when he was a kid, and he lived in the studio where The Rolling Stones and The Faces would just hang out. Having Ethan in the room pushing us really made it more of an 'in the moment' and a visual thing. Capturing live performances is what he does really well."
To make things even more celebratory, there was an extra ten day stint spent with go-to White Denim man Jim Vollentine, who Petralli describes as "my guy, man". He continues: "we've made a lot of records together now. When we left the studio in Asheville with Ethan, we thought we gotta work on this record some more, you know? Though it was really just mixing, which we did with respect to Ethan's arrangements and his recording. I feel like I really haven't made anything like this before."
Ultimately, Stiff is the sound of a band finding their feet again and having the time of their lives. It's a record that refuses to buckle under the pressures of life, instead offering up a soundtrack to sing, dance, shout and scream along to. As a White Denim album, it's a joyride through the past ten years of the band's idiosyncratic catalogue while simultaneously pushing things further forward into new territories. "It's similar to our first record [Workout Holiday] in that we found the initial energy and just went with that," Petralli says of the initial studio spark that started it all. "We thought, what's the fundamental thing that made us want to get into a van and quit our terrible jobs and start this whole thing in the first place? And it was loud, fast-playing, rock and roll."1. Had 2 Know (Personal)

While on a writing retreat in the sleepy southern town of Benton, Mississippi, the members of New York's Ava Luna came across an abandoned house while on a walk through the woods. Overgrown, rotting, and littered with evidence of its past inhabitants, the maze-like dwelling would haunt their psyches throughout the writing and recording of their third full-length Infinite House. Like Borges' Library of Babel, the seemingly endless rooms and hallways in the old house felt like a metaphor for the invisible, internal labyrinths, which the band explores lyrically and sonically on their new album. Recorded by drummer Julian Fader and vocalist/guitar player Carlos Hernandez, and mixed by Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips, Spoon, MGMT), it is safely their most polished recording to date. But their trademark intensity, mirthful humor, and angularity remain resolutely in place, the burnished surfaces illuminating the stories beneath like never before. By questioning, or maybe just forgetting the rules of the real world, on Infinite House the band has grown beyond the nervous soul descriptor they've been tagged with in the past, delivering an album on which nightmarish moments can phoenix into revelations that help us reconnect with the surreal magic in our everyday lives.1. Tall Tall ShadowTall Tall Shadow, the third album by Toronto singer-songwriter Basia Bulat, is the bravest album she has made. Raw and spectral, heartbroken, yet jubilant, these ten songs tell the story of a very hard year in the artist's life and all the love that helped her through it.
Whereas the singer's past two LPs, including 2008's Polaris-nominated Oh, My Darling, were made in Montreal's all-analogue Hotel 2 Stango studio, Tall Tall Shadow is a more modern thing. This is a record with echo and reverb, electronic flutters and electric autoharp, voices that charge and incandesce around buzzing guitars, lonely piano and rattling percussion.
To get to this place, Bulat co-produced the album with, Tim Kingsbury and Mark Lawson. Kingsbury, a member of Arcade Fire, can play anything and everything, she says. Lawson, who has worked on records with Akron/Family and Colin Stetson, and who won a Grammy for his work on Arcade Fire's The Suburbs, is a studio alchemist, someone who hears things hidden in songs, who is always keen to transform them.
They started recording in Toronto, at a reverberating 60-year-old dance hall. Once again, Bulat put together a band: her brother, the punk-inclined drummer Bobby Bulat; Holly Coish on keys and backing vocals; Kingsbury and Ben Whiteley on guitars and bass. One song features Whiteley's father, the folk legend Ken Whiteley, on gospel organ. But Tall Tall Shadow isn't acoustic folk music: like Beck's Sea Change or Buckingham Nicks, chord and strum are a launch-pad for wilder sounds.
Bulat's goal was to keep challenging herself. Promise Not to Think About Love, with shimmying bass and dancing handclaps, is the poppiest track she has ever released. It Can't Be You, played on an Andean charango, is one of the simplest. Never Let Me Go is all crescendo, a woman in a storm, and the title track reaches soaring for the sky: has there ever been a better showcase for Bulat's powerhouse voice? For her steam-train heart?
Two months before I was due to begin recording, I suffered a deep loss, Bulat says. I kind of started over. She started; and she didn't stop.
