Part of the ultimate audiophile Prestige stereo reissues from Analogue Productions - 25 of the most collectible, rarest, most audiophile-sounding Rudy Van Gelder recordings ever made. All cut at 33 1/3.

For nearly a quarter-century, beginning in 1950, tenor saxophonist Gene Ammons (1925-1974) was among the brightest stars in the Prestige Records firmament. Whether leading, or partaking in, one of Prestige's jam sessions, immersing himself in the organ-dominated blues and gospel grooves that in the 1950s came to be called "soul jazz," or digging deep for heart-rending ballads, Ammons was multiply masterful. And in 1960, leading a quintet featuring the impeccable pianist Tommy Flanagan, plus Ray Barretto's piquant congas, he produced the insuperable Boss Tenor.

From the blues that drips from "Hittin' the Jug" and "Blue Ammons" to the infectious medium bounce of the standards "Close Your Eyes" and "Canadian Sunset," and from the sophisticated swing of "Stompin' at the Savoy" to the finger-poppin' bop of "Confirmation" and the after-hours balladry of "My Romance," Boss Tenor has something for everyone claiming to be a fan of modern jazz.

During the two-year existence of their Tough Tenors quintet, Eddie Lockjaw Davis (a Prestige artist) and Johnny Griffin (under contract to Riverside/Jazzland) satisfied their contractual obligations by recording five albums for each company. This was the pair's first for Prestige, and the first of a four-album series taped over the course of an extremely productive evening at the legendary Minton's Playhouse in Harlem. The album, also known as The Breakfast Show in an earlier reissue, gives the rhythm section several opportunities to shine, with Ben Riley's drums dominant on Woody'n You, Bingo Domingo featuring Larry Gale's bass, and Junior Mance's piano solo almost stealing the show on Light and Lovely. It is the leaders, though, who consistently deliver with their complimentary brand of intensity, which is heard at the boil throughout and reaches a particular peak when they exchange ideas on Straight, No Chaser.

Recorded during the same three-day period as My Favorite Things in the fall of 1960, Coltrane's Sound is one of the most highly underrated entries in Coltrane's voluminous catalog. The title could not have been more accurate, as each of the six pieces bear the unmistakable and indelible stamp of Coltrane's early-'60s style. Animating the arrangements on these sessions were Coltrane (soprano/tenor sax), Steve Davis (bass), Elvin Jones(drums), and McCoy Tyner (piano). This classic recording finally receives the ORG Music audiophile treatment with this 180gram double LP 45RPM reissue, mastered from original analog tapes by Bernie Grundman and pressed at Pallas Group in Germany.

    London Scene

Fela's London Scene, released in 1972, is another top-notch affair, made with a smaller band but one that punches above its weight. There is no tenor guitarist and no call-and-response choir, though sing-along vocals are a feature of "Egbe Mi O" ("please carry me"). Throughout, Fela's electric piano is gym-ripped and razor sharp, and Igo Chico turns in three stirring tenor solos. "Buy Africa," written in 1970, was one of Fela's first politically-informed songs. The lyric was written in support of a government campaign to encourage local industry. At this point, Fela remained open to accommodation with the state, on occasions when he deemed it to be in the Nigerian and pan-African interest. He even invited government sponsorship for "Buy Africa," but was rudely rebuffed by the politician he approached with the idea. The incident proved to be an important moment in shaping Fela's future relationship with the authorities. From 1972, he would no longer release accommodationist songs. From there on in, he would identify the status quo as the fundamental problem-a problem that could not be solved by government campaigns, but only by the complete overhaul, if not overthrow, of the government itself. "J'Ehin J'Ehin" ("eat teeth eat teeth") is along similar lyric lines as "Shakara." This time Fela is lampooning people who are so greedy that they eat their own teeth. (A more amiable Yoruba expression describes people who are so hungry that once they have finished their food they eat the plate). In "Who're You," Fela channels James Brown's vocal style over an angular funk groove. "Fight To Finish" draws on Yoruba folklore to offer advice: once you have started something, be prepared to finish it.

    Lonely Twin

Blue Vinyl With Piss Yellow Splatter

If Oh, Ramona was Jordan Geiger's bedroom-pop debut album, then Lonely Twin is the sound of Geiger's Hospital Ships solo project moving up to a three-room suite. Exploding outward on album opener ''Love Or Death,'' Geiger gives voice to those ''...on the outside, always looking in,'' while injecting enough electronic beats, buzzing organ riffs, and joyous handclaps to elevate this sophomore Hospital Ships album from modest humility to self-assured confidence.

Perhaps that's because Geiger, a native of Lawrence, Kansas, former member of Shearwater and the Appleseed Cast, and principal member of the now-defunct Minus Story, has taken the fractured Midwestern influences of The Flaming Lips and Bright Eyes to fresh new heights. ''Honey Please'' is a rollicking slice of queasy, off-kilter rock, but tender tracks like ''Bird In Furs'' and ''Phantom Limb'' revisit Geiger's bedroom strengths: intimate, majestic moments of indie-pop beauty that rise and fall with the crescendos and valleys of his high-pitched tenor.

    Ben Webster And Sweets Edison

Mastered by Bernie Grundman from the Original Analog Master Tapes! Only 2500 Numbered Limited Edition Copies Worldwide!

The two jazz giants Ben Webster and Harry Sweets Edison had long wanted to record an album together, and in 1962, they did. Although associated with two different orchestras (Edison was with Basie and Webster was with Ellington), these two swing kings found that they had a lot in common.

This album features both horn men on three medium tempo blues, Better Go, Kitty, and Did You Call Her Today. Other than this, Webster gets two tenor features, contributing absolutely luscious solos on both How Long Has This Been Going On, and My Romance. After listening to these songs, there can be no doubt that Webster is one of the best balladeers jazz has ever produced. Edison gets his moment in the sun too. On the album closer, Sweets plays a wonderful, even fairly modern sounding, rendition of Embraceable You using a Harmon mute. The ballads, enhanced by the wonderful harmonic sense of pianist Hank Jones, are the highlight of this release, and show both Webster and Sweets' unbeatable melodic sense.

Ben Webster was considered to be on of the three most important 'swing tenors' along with Coleman Hawkins and Lester Young. Known by some as The Brute, he had a tough, raspy and brutal tone on stompes but could deliver warmth and sentiment on softer ballads. Trumpeter Harry Sweets Edison spent his early childhood in Kentucky where he was introduced to music by his uncle. After moving back to his hometown of Columbus, Ohio at the age of 12, he began playing the trumpet with local bands, eventually landing a spot with the Count Basie Orchestra.

Tenor-saxophonist Ben Webster and trumpeter Harry Sweets Edison, both veterans of the swing era (although associated with different orchestras), had long wanted to record a full album together. The results, a swinging quintet set with pianist Hank Jones, bassist George Duvivier and drummer Clarence Johnston, are quite rewarding. There are two ballad features for the tenor (How Long Has This Been Going on and a beautiful version of My Romance) and one for Edison (Embraceable You) along with three medium-tempo collaborations. Nothing unexpected occurs but the melodic music is quite enjoyable. - Scott Yanow, Allmusic.com

At a time when some are steering jazz up a rather shallow third stream and others are busy digging up its roots, Webster and Edison are only motivated by the sheer love of playing.

As much as I'd love to relay all kinds of anecdotes about the challenges Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray encounter during the mastering sessions, I witness none. These boys know the sound of the facility and the Van Gelder masters like the backs of their handsBack home a month later, I unpack some test pressings Chad Kassem has sent meI hear the most realistic-sounding drums ever reproduced by my system. It's as though I'm sitting at the point of creation, experiencing the same high that brought such gifted musicians together as one. Steve Hoffman, Kevin Gray, Chad Kassem, and Don MacInnis have done Rudy Van Gelder and his Blue Note artists proud. Jason Victor Serinus, Stereophile, April 2008

This program of sultry, minor key music with a Brazilian tinge seems inspired by Ike Quebec, who was suffering from advanced cancer that would claim his life three months later. But here is big-toned, impassioned tenor is in tact. Quebec's take on the bossa nova craze that explored that year (1962) is more muscular than Stan Getz's and doesn't rely on the familiar Jobim and Gilberto songs of the day. He and Kenny Burrell solo on the sly, subtle rhythms of Wendell Marshall, Willie Bobo and Garvin Masseaux.

    Chet Baker With Strings

Chet Baker was one of the representatives of the West Coast Cool Jazz movement whose life and music appeals to the imagination of the people the most.

His heroin addiction is well documented, his exploits and misadventures are wrapped in legendary anecdotes.
But his life story never managed to overshadow his unmistakable talent.

Chet Baker has one of the most recognizable sounds of all the jazz musicians in the cannon; his trumpet playing is intimate, simple and delicate, with a hint of melancholy that tears at the heartstrings.

Chet Baker With Strings was recorded during three sessions in 1953 with Zoot Sims & Jack Montrose on tenor sax, Russ Freeman on piano, Shelly Manne on drums and Clifford 'Bud' Shank on alto sax.

The players are lifted up into the air like a leaf on the breeze by Montrose's delicate string arrangements, while the Baker and Sims interplay on songs like 'Loved Walked In' are amongst the best recorded in jazz history.

This fully instrumental album is a classic, and now available on vinyl for the first time since its original release in 1953!

Originally released in November 1960, Ballads by Cobb, as its title suggests, is all slow ballads, putting the emphasis on the Texas tenor's warm tone. Cobb spent most of the 1960s playing back in his native Texas but he returned to the national scene in 1973 and during his final 15 years engaged in many exciting tenor battles, showing that there were few tougher Texas tenors than the legendary Arnett Cobb.

On trumpeter Lee Morgan's third album for Blue Note, recorded on 24 March 1957, Morgan's sextet-comprised of Gigi Gryce on alto and flute, Benny Golson on tenor, Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Charlie Persip on drums-showcases five compositions by sideman Benny Golson. The numbers include the fascinating "Hassan's Dream" as well as "I Remember Clifford", a tribute to the late trumpet player Clifford Brown. Tragically Morgan (a trumpet player like Brown) himself would also meet with an untimely demise, but in 1957, the nineteen year old Philadelphia native was one of the leading trumpeters on the New York jazz scene and remained so until his death at age 33. One of Morgan's most legendary performances, on John Coltrane's celebrated Blue Train album, would be recorded just a few months after this date.

Grand Encounter: 2 Degrees East 3 Degrees West (Pure Pleasure)

Also reissued as 2 Degrees East, 3 Degrees West and occasionally listed under tenor saxophonist Bill Perkins' name, this classic session is the ultimate in cool jazz. Perkins' mellow tone matches quite well with the quiet but inwardly passionate playing of pianist John Lewis, guitarist Jim Hall, bassist Percy Heath, and drummer Chico Hamilton. Lewis is featured with the rhythm section on I Can't Get Started, Hall is added for Skylark, and the full group plays three standards plus Lewis' memorable (and atmospheric) 2 Degrees East, 3 Degrees West.

    Musicians:

    • John Lewis (piano)

    • Bill Perkins (tenor saxophone)

    • Jim Hall (guitar)

    • Percy Heath (bass)

    • Chico Hamilton (drums)

    Recording: February 1956

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

In 1962, when the 39-year old Dexter Gordon recorded Go, he had already lived a lifetime in jazz. After gaining experience playing with the big bands of Lionel Hampton and Louis Armstrong, in 1945, Gordon became the first tenor-saxophonist to not only master bebop but to develop his own distinctive sound in the new style. He recorded with Dizzy Gillespie and as a leader, and starred in late night jam sessions in Los Angeles with fellow tenors Wardell Gray and Teddy Edwards. After a largely uneventful decade in the 1950s, Gordon made a major comeback in 1961 when he emerged in prime form on Blue Note, recording Dexter Calling. Its follow-up album Go! Was even better. Joined in his quartet by the great pianist Sonny Clark, bassist Butch Warren and drummer Billy Higgins, Gordon really digs into the colorful program. On such numbers as "Three O'Clock In The Morning" (a standard that was extinct after the early 1920s), "Love For Sale," his own "Cheesecake," and "I Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out To Dry," Gordon plays chorus after chorus of outstanding ideas in his huge tone. He caresses the melodies, creates solos that are full of swing, wit, and inspiration, and makes every phrase sound personal, fresh and original. There was no mistaking Dexter Gordon for anyone else, and he always gave one the impression that he could play for hours without running out of inventive ideas or personality. Go! Is an album that grows in interest and power with each listen. It is Dexter Gordon at the height of his powers.

Trumpeter Lee Morgan performs two funky boogaloos, a ballad, and three complex group originals on this album whose music was first released in 1980. This is a transitional date with the hard bop stylist leaning in the direction of modal music and even anticipating aspects of fusion. His sextet (which includes Bennie Maupin on tenor, guitarist George Benson, pianist John Hicks, bassist Reggie Workman, and drummer Billy Higgins) is quite advanced for the period and inspires Morgan to some fiery and explorative playing.
