    200-Gram LP

Mastered By Bernie Grundman From The Original Analog Tape

Housed In A Tip-On Gatefold Jacket (From Stoughton Printing) For The First Time!

Plated And Pressed At Quality Record Pressings!

Ellington Soars To Unmatched Artistic Heights Alongside Impressive Jazz Stars Including Dizzy Gillespie, Johnny Hodges And Jimmy Rushing!

The tremendously detailed audio effect achieved by Columbia's engineers is brought back to life on this 200-gram LP from Analogue Productions. You want Duke and his men at their best, this is it!

Duke Ellington called his music American Music rather than jazz, and liked to describe those who impressed him as beyond category. He remains one of the most influential figures in jazz, if not in all American music and is widely considered as one of the 20th century's best known African American personalites. He received 13 Grammy Awards and was honored with the French Legion of Honor in 1973. Posthumous recognition of his work include a special award citation from the Pulitzer Prize Board.

Dizzy's spectacular trumpet blooms here amidst the Ellingtonian aggregate. The sometimes tender, sometimes shouting blues style of Jimmy Rushing provides nice contrast in one of the most varied and satisfying Ellington recordings ever. Originally released on Columbia Records in 1959, Jazz Party In Stereo contains a formidable gallery of jazz stars including Dizzy Gillespie, Jimmy Rushing, Johnny Hodges, Clark Terry, Paul Gonsalves, and more!

So what have we done to perfect this brilliant reissue? Mastering by Bernie Grundman from the original analog tape, for starters. Naturally we turned to our own Quality Record Pressings for the finest 200-gram, dead-silent background pressing. Top it off with a Stoughton Printing gatefold tip-on jacket with beautiful full-size inner pictures and you've got an audiophile's dream. A can't miss for your collection!

This most unusual Duke Ellington record includes two selections featuring nine symphonic percussionists on timpani, vibes, marimbas, and xylophones. Dizzy Gillespie makes a historic appearance with Ellington's orchestra on 'U.M.M.G.' (a meeting that should have been repeated often but sadly never was), Jimmy Rushing (Count Basie's former vocalist) sings 'Hello Little Girl,' and both Johnny Hodges ('All of Me') and Paul Gonsalves ('Ready Go!') have chances to blow. - AllMusic

    Coltrane Jazz

180 Gram 45 RPM Double LP Remastered From Original Master Tapes

Pressed at Pallas and Mastered by Bernie Grundman

Originally released in 1960, and on the heels of Giant Steps, Coltrane Jazz came in the midst of the saxophonist's peak Atlantic period. The album is among several recordings that Coltrane issued from 1959-1961, and which, ultimately, forever changed the face of music.

Featuring pianists Wynton Kelly and McCoy Tyner, bassists Paul Chambers and Steve Davis, and drummers Elvin Jones and Jimmy Cobb, the set was recorded at three separate sessions. The expert personnel are a harbinger of the great quartet Coltrane soon would assemble for 1960's My Favorite Things. And while not as famous as that iconic title, Coltrane Jazz belongs in the pantheon of phenomenal jazz albums and is an absolute must for any music fan.

In addition to boasting superior performances and playing, the set marks Trane's first use of multiphonics, the practice of extracting more than one tone at a time from the horn, which here, and unlike on any other Coltrane record, is querulously pitched, allowing him to explore new tonalities on tracks such as Harmonique. Innovations abound. Every cut is an original composition save for Johnny Mercer's My Shining Hour. Not surprisingly, Miles Davis' influence is felt throughout; his rhythm section is used on all but one selection.

ORG Music continues its praiseworthy archival vinyl series, presenting this landmark jazz effort cut at 45RPM and on first-rate 180g vinyl. Mastered from the original master tapes with meticulous care, Coltrane Jazz teems with new life, with the headliner's horn playing and tonalities assuming lifelike richness, boldness, and presence. The supporting cast's movements and fills are heard in pristine clarity, and the airiness that all jazz lovers prize is here in spades.

    Jazz Samba

Partly because of its Brazilian collaborators and partly because of The Girl From Ipanema, Getz/Gilberto is nearly always acknowledged as the Stan Getz bossa nova LP. But Jazz Samba is just as crucial and groundbreaking; after all, it came first, and in fact was the first full-fledged bossa nova album ever recorded by American jazz musicians. And it was just as commercially successful, topping the LP charts and producing its own pop chart hit single in Desafinado. It was the true beginning of the bossa nova craze, and introduced several standards of the genre (including Ary Barroso's Bahia and Antonio Carlos Jobim's Desafinado and Samba de Uma Nota Só [aka One Note Samba]). But above all, Jazz Samba stands on its own artistic merit as a shimmering, graceful collection that's as subtly advanced -- in harmony and rhythm -- as it is beautiful. Getz and his co-billed partner, guitarist Charlie Byrd -- who was actually responsible for bringing bossa nova records to the U.S. and introducing Getz to the style -- have the perfect touch for bossa nova's delicate, airy texture. For his part, Byrd was one of the first American musicians to master bossa nova's difficult, bubbling syncopations, and his solos are light and lilting. Meanwhile, Getz's playing is superb, simultaneously offering a warm, full tone and a cool control of dynamics; plus, Byrd's gently off-kilter harmonies seem to stimulate Getz's melodic inventiveness even more than usual. But beyond technique, Getz intuitively understands the romanticism and the undercurrent of melancholy inherent in the music, and that's what really made Jazz Samba such a revelatory classic. Absolutely essential for any jazz collection.

    Jazz Samba

Mastered by George Marino at Sterling Sound

The words bossa nova are often synonymous with the name Stan Getz. But North Americans might not have ever known the bright sound of bossa nova had it not been for Charlie Byrd. In 1961 Byrd returned from a tour of South America, where bossa nova music was thriving. The style was the invention of singer Joao Gilberto and songwriter Antonio Carlos Jobim - an adaptation of infectious Brazilian samba rhythms with the harmonic structures and cool surface of West Coast jazz. Byrd brought back records for Getz to hear, they planned a session, and the result was Jazz Samba - the first album of true bossa nova music by jazz artists and the one that broke the bossa nova wave in 1960s America.

...these are all truly classic Verve titles that you simply don't want to miss...most importantly, the sound of these reissues is nothing short of astounding. Particularly the early Billie and Ella mono records are incredible treasures of sonic beauty. I'd definitely ask Santa for the whole set, or, if you want to cherry pick, the most classic titles. Whatever you decide, you owe yourself at least a half dozen! Winner of a 2012 Positive Feedback Online Writers' Choice Award - Danny Kaey, Positive Feedback Online, November/December 2011

    Country Jazz

    Pressed On Red Colored Vinyl

Jazz-meets-country in an impossibly hot session, ca. 1959! A platter of lightning-fast picking and impeccable taste from the legendary George Barnes!

Chicago's George Barnes led a storied career as bandleader and session guitarist, including roles with national radio and television orchestras during the post-war days when electric guitar was being heard more frequently as a central instrument. His Gibson ES-300 had a singular sound that established his presence and persona among other players, and was heard on many hit records of the '50s and '60s including Connie Francis' "Lipstick on Your Collar." Country Jazz is a 1957 collection of originals and public domain songs reworked in the guitarist's style and sound, originally issued on the budget labels Colortone and Brigade. Listen as one of the early guitar gods turns tune after tune into six-string magic, working a collection of familiar songs into a truly new and exciting experience, presented here in its original mono mix.

The description on the back of the original album reads: "A wonderful collection of Western favorites that everyone will love-and played in the traditional Western style." The front cover features a more accurate explanation: "Great guitar solos in modern country jazz style"-as if "modern country jazz" was an established category-though, if anyone could establish a new species of music, it was George. Country Jazz was not designed to explore a new iteration of country music, but when George added his own twist of jazz to these rockabilly-tinged tunes the resulting influence was unmistakable. These arrangements of traditional folk and country songs represent the enjoyment George got out of crossing musical genres. He could (and would) play anything-which made him invaluable in the studios of Chicago and New York City, but also meant he defied categorization, inadvertently denying himself a prestigious place in any one class of musician.

Country Jazz was fun for George; little did he know it would become one of his most influential recordings. It's been said that the terrific guitarist Danny Gatton learned the entire album note-for-note, and that it inspired Jimmy Bryant to record his Country Cabin Jazz in 1960. Young guitarists who hadn't yet been born when George died in 1977 are as enthralled by Country Jazz as rock guitarists are of anything from Jimi Hendrix or Eric Clapton, the latter even referencing George in his autobiography.

In 1956, Bill Evans was virtually unknown (it would be more than a year before he first gained notice as part of the celebrated Miles Davis Sextet). His initial album attracted little attention back then, but listening with hindsight it is easy to hear in these highly individual trio and solo treatments a clear prophecy of the rich inventiveness that so deeply influenced Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett and an entire generation of jazz pianists.

    Art Blakey!!!!! Jazz Messengers!!!!!

Art Blakey discovered and championed young talented musicians such as Clifford Brown, Lou Donaldson, Keith Jarrett and Wynton Marsalis to name but a few. But he also delivered the message of hard bop through thousands of performances at festivals right down to the smallest club. Lively, joyous performances, the very highest technical standards and somnambulistic music-making characterize this recording. Right from the very start it is clear that these jazz ambassadors have a new message for us. The hard-beat recordings win in lyricism thanks to the gentle sound of Curtis Fuller's trombone, something that was often missing in the powerful Blue Note sound. Four jazz evergreens give the musicians the time and opportunity to display their soloistic talents. The real climax, however, is to be found in the harmonic layering of the three winds which lend the themes new appeal. The message was broadcasted many times until the death of Art Blakey, but the history of jazz would have been a great deal poorer without these milestone recordings on the Impulse label. Art Blakey certainly knew how to delight his audience with fire, originality, a wealth of ideas and great humor. All these attributes are applicable to the six titles on this album.

12 track spiritual, deep jazz LP from Parisian producer Onra and friend - fellow producer, composer and arranger - Buddy
Sativa. Combining as the Yatha Bhuta Jazz Combo this LP may be a surprise to followers of Onra, while Buddy Sativa
will be known to some via his own 2011 jazz leaning LP Deus Ex Machina on Favorite Records. There they collaborated
on their first jazz track - Indica. Pleased with the results they carried on, keeping it simple and adhering to
straightforward play-more-jazz stylings they have crafted this LP over sessions sandwiched between their assorted
commitments over the last two years. Opening the LP Universe is Love, a shout to Lonnie Liston Smith, is the first track
they created under the new no-rules-spontaneity rules. The rest of the LP was created in a similar vein - a drum pattern
for tempo or a bassline for tone and layering instrumentation repeatedly on top. Mistakes allowed and encouraged!
Spoken word from Brooklyn poet Aja Monet on The Time is Now, otherwise it's an instrumental trip.
So Yatha Bhuta - as it really is, insight, a mix of experience and spontaneity, a LP not created for release, more a
liberating, therapeutic break from their other oft constraining aliases.
Jazz because they like it and not for the sake of it, a chance meeting with the late Mati Klarwein's son at an exhibition in
Dublin, led to the icing on the cake as the record is beautifully housed by the artists Conceptual Tree painting. The LP
will be out in April on vinyl and download preceded by a limited 7 inch.

    Jazz Goes To College

In the spring of 1954 Jazz-great Dave Brubeck did a tour of North American college campuses. Paul Desmond (alto sax), Bob Bates (bass), and Joe Dodge (drums) joined him and their support of Brubeck is uniformly flawless, ultimately producing what many consider as the most memorable music in the artist's cannon.

Indeed the genre gets schooled as the quartet leans in with striking energy and finesse. Enjoyed among college students in the 1950s and early 1960s both the tour and album brought Jazz to a whole new generation.

Recorded at the Edwardian Room of the Plaza Hotel for a bunch of record biz execs celebrating the success of Columbia Records jazz division, the crowd may have been stiff but the group was anything but, storming through "If I Were A Bell" (yes, the Guys & Dolls tune) and "Straight, No Chaser" before settling into a beautiful rendition of "My Funny Valentine", and closing out the set with Sonny Rollins' hard-bop classic, "Oleo". Reissued on LP by Doxy.

    Jazz Reunion (Pure Pleasure)

It is strange that two such individual musicians as Pee Wee Russell and Coleman Hawkins were kept apart for some 32 years but it is a fact that not since 1929 had they met in a recording studio. Pee Wee Russell's unique, and sometimes derided approach was praised as ahead of its time, and cited by some as an early example of free jazz. Coleman Hawkins, at the time of this 1961 Jazz Reunion record date dismissed any idea that Russell was now playing modern, claiming that he had always played that way. The greatly imaginative improvisations of Russell when at his best remain an inspiration to jazz clarinetists.

On this album the whole group move with an elasticity which only comes when exactly the right mood is attained by all the musicians taking part. Pee Wee plays with deep passion throughout and Hawkins was never heard in better blowing form than this. His virile, robust solos are as forceful as anything he recorded in his long distinguished career. Emmett Berry's solos are models of tasteful improvisation. Brookmeyer displays a pretty turn of wit and builds his solos with ingenuity. With excellent arrangements by Nat Pierce and some lovely cymbal work from Jo Jones this really is a beauty.

    Musicians:

    • Coleman Hawkins (tenor saxophone)

    • Pee Wee Russell (clarinet)

    • Emmett Berry (trumpet)

    • Bob Brookmeyer (trombone)

    • Nat Pierce (piano)

    • Milt Hinton (bass)

    • Jo Jones (drums)

Recording: February 1961 at Nola Penthouse Studio, New York City, by Bob d'Orleans
    Production: Nat Hentoff

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    First Time On Vinyl!

Originally released in March 2007, Sex 'n' Jazz, starring Marvin Gaye, Paul Carrack, and Erik Truffaz, immediately captured the public's attention and became an overnight success for Dutch groove jazz band Gare du Nord. Tracks like Marvin & Miles, You're My Medicine and Beautiful Day would become instant classics and kick-started a new jazz pop wave in The Netherlands.

The appeal of the album was also recognized by jazz label Blue Note and in 2009 a remixed version of the album hit the shelves. With the key tracks, originally mixed in the chill mode, dramatically remixed in club soul style, the blue label parachuted Sex 'n' Jazz into platinum heaven.

This 2017 expanded edition brings together both the Blue Note remix album master and the original vintage album master from early 2007 for the very first time. State of the art remastered, this landmark edition of Sex 'n' Jazz sounds as crispy as ever. This must be the ultimate fan experience to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the trendsetting club soul masterwork and its prelude.

Ten years after its original release, the album is now available on vinyl for the first time. The first limited, individually numbered edition is pressed on white vinyl. Only 1,000 copies available.

Further decades may pass and public taste may change, but it will always be just the right time for Sex 'n' Jazz.

    Chicago Jazz Festival 1990

Classic late period festival show from Miles' final tour.

Miles Davis is backed by Kenny Garrett on alto saxophone and flute, Kei Agaki on synths, Richard Patterson on bass, Ricky Wellman on drums, Erin Davis (Mile's youngest son, incorrectly announced as John Bigham) on electronic percussion, and John "Foley" McCreary, Jr. on "lead bass" - a custom Blue Marble instrument tuned almost an octave higher than a standard model to fill the role of a lead guitarist.

The choice of material was equally as curious and exciting, consisting of one cut apiece from 1983's Star People and 1989's Amandla, a few numbers previously un-released on studio recordings, and a trio of covers - Scritti Politti's 'Perfect Way,' Cyndi Lauper's 'Time After Time' and Michael Jackson's 'Human Nature.'

Despite rumors of failing health during this period, Miles' playing is just as sharp and energetic as ever it was, and his band expertly blend together a complex mixture of jazz, funk and fusion.

Broadcast live on local radio for those unable to attend, this release captures the group's full set providing a snapshot of a jazz great giving one of the finest performances of his late career. Sadly, there were scant opportunities left for such as little more than a year after performing the show, now available here for the first time, Miles Davis passed away at the age of 65.

    Jazz Composers Workshop

The Jazz Composers' Workshop album, originally released on Savoy in 1956, is made up of two sessions-recorded on 31 October 1954 (side A and tracks 5 & 6 on side B), and 30 January 1955 (tracks 1-4 on side B)-that were part of Mingus' influential "Jazz Composers' Workshop", a forum intended to give young jazz composers the opportunity to play and record their own compositions. The 1954 session-a sextet line-up featuring Charles Mingus (bass), John La Porta (clarinet & alto sax), Teo Macero (tenor & baritone sax), George Barrow (tenor & baritone sax), Mal Waldron (piano) and Rudy Nichols (drums)-was made up entirely of Mingus originals, with the exception of the 1925 standard "Tea For Two". Mingus' "Body & Soul", found here, did not appear on the original LP. The 1955 date-a quartet session led by pianist Wally Cirillo, and featuring Mingus on bass, tenor-saxophonist Teo Macero, and drummer Kenny Clarke-was actually intended as a showcase for four compositions by Cirillo, and featured one of the first, if not THE first, jazz composition to be based on a 12-tone row, "Transeason".
