    Third

Third is the first studio album from Portishead in over ten years so it's about as highly anticipated as it gets! The album incorporates a lot of samples and synthesizers and drum tracks meld seamlessly with violins and pianos. Haunting, emotional, moody, raw and modern, Third is an incredible record.

Portishead was formed in Bristol, U.K. in 1991 by Geoff Barrow, Beth Gibbons and Adrian Utley. After releasing a short film entitled To Kill A Dead Man and its accompanying music, they were signed to a record deal with Go! Beat Records.

Portisheads first album, Dummy, was released in 1994 and the first single was Numb. The album was successful in both Europe and the United States (where it sold more than 150,000 copies even before the band toured there). Dummy spawned two hit singles, Glory Box and Sour Times, and went on to win the prestigious Mercury Music Prize in 1995. After their initial success, Portishead withdrew from the spotlight for three years until their second and self titled album, Portishead, was released in 1997. The albums sound differed from Dummy, the main differences being that much of the music was composed and played by the band, not sampled from records, and had a grainy, harsher sound. Three singles, Cowboys, Over and All Mine were released, the latter achieving a Top 10 placing in the U.K. In 1997, the band performed a one-off show with strings by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra at Roseland Ballroom in New York. A live album primarily featuring these new orchestral arrangements of the groups songs was released in 1998. For the next few years, the band members concentrated on solo and other pursuits, until in February 2005, the band appeared live for the first time in seven years at the Tsunami Benefit Concert in Bristol.

    Third

Soft Machine released their third album, surprisingly called 'Third' in 1970. It is a double album with each side of the vinyl consisting of a single long composition.

Its music explores the emerging jazz fusion of the type present on Miles Davis' 'Bitches Brew', which was released just a few months earlier.
'Third' marks the most major of Soft Machine's several shifts in musical genre over their career, completing their transition from psychedelic music to jazz.

Third is a significant milestone of the Canterbury scene, featuring interplay between the band's personnel: Mike Ratledge on keyboards, Robert Wyatt on drums, Hugh Hopper on bass and newest member Elton Dean on saxophone.

    Third Eye Blind

Third Eye Blind is the eponymous debut for the American alternative rock band Third Eye Blind, originally released in 1997. It spawned several singles, including top 10 charting Semi-Charmed Life, Jumper, and How's It Going to Be. While Third Eye Blind peaked at #25 on the Billboard 200, it spent 104 weeks on the charts. It is the group's bestselling album, having been certified 6x Platinum.

Third Eye Blind is catchier than the average post-grunge album, and that fact alone reveals a lot about the band. Instead of relying on standard, plodding grunge influences, Third Eye Blind draw heavily from the simple hook-laden traditions of classic Arena Rock, which makes the album more immediate. Third Eye Blind is easy on the ears, and its straight-ahead professionalism makes it a pleasurable listen for post-grungers.

Black Milk brings his distinctive controlled yet emotional delivery and live band to Third Man Records for a live performance. Having worked with J Dilla, Slum Village, Phat Kat, Lloyd Banks and many more, Black Milk is a legend on the Detroit hip hop scene. An anomaly on the current music scene, the band defies all description and genres and is easily one of the most original out there. The Dutchess and the Duke have made two previous albums of wonderfully sincere, heartfelt and true songs. Their self-described ''campfire punk'' is equal parts beautiful boy/girl harmonies, subdued finger-picked acoustic guitar pairings and minimal percussive accoutrements. In short... it's sublimely compelling. After a hiatus of a few years, they're slowly creeping back into live performances and Third Man could was thrilled to host one of the first, recording the set direct-to-acetate in the relaxed, intimate setting of the Blue Room.

Peter Walker is the last living psychedelic guitar maestro in a long line of greats like John Fahey, Robbie Basho and Sandy Bull. His performance was nothing short of a master class for anyone who's ever picked up a guitar. For the occasion Peter performed a handful of songs on piano, something he's never done before or since. Ending with an absolutely haunting and unreal version of ''Chandranandan'' Peter Walker left doubt in no one's mind that he is one of the most important guitar players ever. A transcendent evening.

The Residents released of their third album, The Third Reich 'n' Roll in 1976. People have speculated whether The Residents were hinting that Rock 'n' Roll has brain-washed the youth of the world. When confronted with this possibility, they replied, Well, it may be true or it may not, but we just wanted to kick out the jams and get it on. The Third Reich 'n' Roll consists of two suites, Swastikas on Parade and Hitler was a Vegetarian. Both are semi-phonetic interpretations of top forty hits from the sixties. Our roots, say The Residents, a bright orange carrot clutched lovingly in their hands. Remastered for vinyl!

Dear Catastrophe Waitress ushered in a new chapter for Belle and Sebastian. Once a hushed bedroom indie project, the band reemerged as a pop powerhouse. Subsequent albums, The Life Pursuit and Write About Love marked a newfound confidence in the Scottish collective, and with it, some of their best record and ticket sales to date, elevating Belle & Sebastian from cherished undergroundlings into masters of modern songcraft. Third Eye Centre, like its predecessor Push Barman To Open Old Wounds, collects fan-favorite b-sides from cherished albums and also serves as a documentary of a decade.

Kitty, Daisy & Lewis return with their new album, three years on since their hugely acclaimed Smoking In Heaven . An early fan, Mick Jones of The Clash, was keen to get involved as producer and spent four months rehearsing in their home for the new album.

Kitty, Daisy & Lewis The Third was recorded and finished in the summer of 2014 and sets them apart, embracing a spread of influences from blues to disco, but always sounding unmistakably Kitty Daisy& Lewis. The stories in this album resonate with moods and melodies that touch you in ways that are both uplifting and unnerving. With three different writers and multi-instrumentalists in the band, each track is a sparkling gem that reflects a different facet of experience.

    Third Dimension (Pure Pleasure)

Arguably one of the most exciting saxophone soloists in jazz history, Kirk was a post-modernist before that term even existed. Kirk played the continuum of jazz tradition as an instrument unto itself; he felt little compunction about mixing and matching elements from the music's history, and his concoctions usually seemed natural, if not inevitable.

Third Dimension was the debut album by jazz multi-instrumentalist Roland Kirk originally released as Triple Threat on the King label in 1956. The original album received limited distribution and only became widely known after it was rereleased a few years prior to Kirk's death. The album features the first recorded examples of Kirk's trademark playing of multiple wind instruments at the same time as well as two tracks (Stormy Weather and The Nearness Of You) where he overdubbed manzello and tenor saxophone. Kirk would later state that the album ┬╗was about the third overdub record in black classical music.

    Musicians:

    • Roland Kirk (tenor saxophone, manzello, stritch)

    • James Madison (piano)

    • Carl Pruitt (bass)

    • Henry Duncan (drums)

Recording: November 1956 in New York City

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Live At Third Man Records

Performance Recorded Direct-To-Acetate On March 26, 2016, At Third Man Nashville's Blue Room Venue

It's no stretch to say that Carla Azar is one of America's greatest living drummers. Intuitive, skilled, and perched quite comfortably on the extremely thin line between high energy and total entropy. All too often the title is heaped upon some goofball doing blast beats, rambling about breakdowns and power violence, all can easily be mistaken for the sounds of a scratched CD. Lucky for us and lucky for every pair of ears the whole world over, Third Man doesn't buy into that nonsense. And CDs? Scratched or brand spankin' new, they're not our preferred medium.

Hailing from Los Angeles, Autolux is comprised of singer/bassist Eugene Goreshter, drummer Azar, and guitarist/keyboardist Greg Edwards. The band formed in 2000 and has released two EPs and three LPs, including Pussy's Dead in 2016, shortly before this epic live show was recorded in the Third Man Blue Room. Their sound is peculiar and unmistakable, a collision of post-punk, noise, pop and electronica (Organica? Maybe!). Think cyborg whistling glitch-hop mash-ups. You get it? Haha! Nice!

Live records speak for themselves. This record speaks for itself. If you need us to say anything further, we're gonna need you to set this sheet down, free up both hands, use one to call your mom, keep her on the line, and use the other to hold her hand while she walks you toward the record bin housing something ''on your level,'' because apparently live music ain't your thing. But if you're still reading, it's because you clearly get it. Now go grip this record and see what the fuss is all about.

Parquet Courts brought a sweltering performance to the hallowed grounds of Third Man's Blue Room on June 5th of last year--and very fortunately, TMR was able to lovingly capture it with their one-of-a-kind, direct-to-acetate recording process. The set included a dynamic selection of songs from last year's critically acclaimed album Sunbathing Animal, as well as the 2013 EP, Tally All The Things That You Broke. The end result? A record that will have your feet stompin' and body rockin' as soon as the needle hits.

    Live At Third Man Records

Last May, two of the funniest guys we know decided to stop in the Blue Room while on the road promoting their definitive and comprehensive 16-CD Box Set (yes, you read that right) The Best of The Best Show. What was comprehensive became immediately not so after Tom Scharpling (#31 on Rolling Stone's Fifty Funniest People List), and Jon Wurster (#51 on said list, plus esteemed indie-rock pioneer, comedy writer, and actor in his own right) recorded an episode of The Best Show here at Third Man Records. But, fear not, completists! As with nearly every event to grace our famous cornerless room, we recorded it, and it's almost as hilarious on wax as it was in person.

Needle to vinyl is the only way to hear this comedy gold, and we're proud to be the ones to bring an LP of this caliber into existence. Backed by friends-of-Third-Man-and-anyone-with-ears ''Willy and the Mason Jars'' (William Tyler, Ryan Norris, Jem Cohen, and Jacob Edwards), Scharpling & Wurster not only witty repartee your face off over and over again on this seminal offering, they also sing their asses off, and interview a very special guest.
