    Nightlife

Reissue of the Irish Rock band's 1974 album, their third overall but their first for Mercury Records and the first to feature the classic-era line-up that included bassist/vocalist Phil Lynott and guitarists Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson. While world domination was yet a year or two away, Night Life introduced a new and improved Thin Lizzy and their unique dual lead guitar attack.

Thin Lizzy COLLECTED is a great collection of the many faces of the band. In late 1972 Thin Lizzy released their first hit in the version of a traditional Irish ballad, ''Whiskey In The Jar''. It topped the worldwide charts. The band's album released later on in 1973 featured both the hit single and ''The Rocker''.

Nightlife, the fourth studio album was produced by Ron Nevison and featured Gary Moore on lead guitar on ''Still In Love With You''.

The fifth studio album Fighting showed the first real evidence of the twin guitar sound that would lead the band towards their greatest successes. It includes the tracks ''Suicide'' and ''Wild One''.

After a successful multi-band tour in support of Status Quo, the band recorded the album Jailbreak. The album featured the tracks ''Jailbreak'' and ''The Boys Are Back in Town'', as well as the real gem ''Emerald''. The twin guitar sound had been fully developed by this time. Thin Lizzy flew to Canada in 1977 as a trio to record their next album, with Gorham handling all the guitar parts. The album included the songs ''Dancing In The Moonlight'' and ''Bad Reputation''.

At the beginning of 1979 they recorded Black Rose: A Rock Legend in Paris. The album was released in 1979 and has been described as one of the band's greatest, most successful album. The tracks ''Do Anything You Want'' and ''Sarah'' are both included.

Lynott worked on his solo career with several albums. It spawned the solo tracks ''King's Call'' and ''Yellow Pearl'', as well as the track ''Chinatown''. In the meantime Thin Lizzy released their twelfth studio album including the wonderful tracks ''The Sun Goes Down'' and ''Cold Sweat''.

    Fighting

Fighting is the fifth studio album by Irish rock band Thin Lizzy, released in 1975. After spending four albums trying to find their niche, the band finally forged an identifiable sound featuring the twin guitars of Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson. This sound draws from hard rock, folk, pop and rhythm and blues. It set the stage for the big commercial breakthrough of the follow-up album, Jailbreak. The album was also their first album to chart in the UK, hitting #60.

Thunder and Lightning is the twelfth and final studio album by Irish hard rock band Thin Lizzy, released in 1983. Guitarist John Sykes was hired to replace Snowy White after 1981's Renegade, and Sykes helped to provide a heavier sound and guitar tone than Thin Lizzy had used on previous albums. However, the bulk of the songwriting (except for Cold Sweat) was completed before he joined the band. Keyboard player Darren Wharton also offered a stronger musical influence to Thin Lizzy's final studio album, co-writing many of the tracks including Some Day She Is Going to Hit Back, and the final single The Sun Goes Down. A farewell tour followed the album's release, followed by the live album Life. The group's co-founder, frontman and bass player Phil Lynott died in 1986 from drug-related causes.

Book-deep Liner Notes And Rare Archival Photos

Seismic shifts happened between the previous year's Shades Of A Blue Orphanage and 1973's Vagabonds Of The Western World.

Frontman Phil Lynott was still documenting working class life in the group's native Dublin, and the band still featured guitarist Eric Bell and drummer Brian Downey, even if Bell was soon to leave; the shift was in the feel of the album. Between Jim Fitzpatrick's lurid album cover which depicted the band in space, the new, hot-rod-like Thin Lizzy logo, and Lynott's newly throaty howl, it's possibly the first Thin Lizzy album on which they truly could be described as a hard rock band.

Vagabonds presented a swaggering confidence, a band buoyed by the success of semi-accidental smash hit "Whisky In The Jar," and carved out a moody, dark sound by borrowing bits from the blues, folk, psych, and Celtic music. Check out "Slow Blues" for proof, and decide whether Lynott or the guitars win the wail-off that begins the track.

"Whisky In The Jar" had been a bone of contention for the band who felt it didn't represent them. Pushed out due to their presence on package tours with rockers Slade and Suzi Quatro, it seemed to seal their fate, and their Vagabonds single, "The Rocker," set out their stall for good.

The weirdness and idiosyncracies of Phil Lynott's early songwriting hadn't been ironed out completely: "The Hero And The Madman" saw them try their hand at acid-fried cowboy rock-if such a thing ever existed.

After the album, and after Bell's departure due to ill health and disillusionment with the music industry, Thin Lizzy were reinvented once again. Lynott recruited two guitarists and the band left Decca to record Nightlife for Phonogram.

Their big hits and glory years-beginning with 1976's Jailbreak-were still ahead of them, but, with Vagabonds as a centerpiece, Thin Lizzy's early years left behind a cabinet of curiosities.

    Bad Reputation

That much rock & roll excess and that little sleep--it would be enough to ruffle anyone. Thus Thin Lizzy decamped to Canada to unwind from a year of incident and illness. There they produced Bad Reputation, which sounds, if not exactly laid-back, then at least damn smooth. Phil Lynott was confident enough to loosen Lizzy's atomic boogie and open his writing to jazz and folk influences, while the band, despite shifting membership, sound tighter than ever, playing with a new delicacy and thoughtfulness. Scott Gorham emerged here as a genuinely original guitarist, Tony Visconti's production sharpens the edges, and the title track, Southbound, and Dancing in the Moonlight are among Lizzy's best. --Taylor Parkes (Amazon)

    Black Rose: A Rock Legend

    Import

Black Rose: A Rock Legend is the ninth studio album by Irish band Thin Lizzy, released in 1979. The album debuted at its #2 peak in the UK album charts and is the band's most successful studio album to date. It was the first time that blues rock guitarist Gary Moore remained in the band long enough to record an album after previous stints in 1974 and 1977 with Thin Lizzy. He appeared with frontman Phil Lynott in the rock band Skid Row in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Around this time Moore recorded the album Back on the Streets with Lynott, spawning the UK top 10 single Parisienne Walkways (with Lynott on vocals). He left Thin Lizzy that year following a dispute but worked with Lynott again on his tours in 1984 and 1985 and on the top 5 single Out in the Fields and accompanying album Run for Cover, on what were to be Lynott's final performances before his death in January 1986. Axl Rose has the cover of Black Rose: A Rock Legend tattooed on his right upper arm, and once said that he "wanted to show it to Phil Lynott, but then he died on me. The album included the second song Lynott wrote about a member of his family entitled Sarah, the first song by this name having appeared on 1972's Shades of a Blue Orphanage, written about his grandmother, also named Sarah. The song on this album is about his then newly born daughter. The last track "Róisín Dubh" is comprised of traditional songs, all arranged by Lynott and Moore, as well of original parts. The song Will You Go Lassie, Go (Wild Mountain Thyme) is sometimes mistakenly credited as a traditional song, but was written by William McPeake, and first recorded by Francis McPeake (and is on this album credited to F. McPeak).

    Garage Inc

For many years, Metallica's 1987 EP Garage Days Re-Revisited was the most sought-after item in their catalog; it was constantly bootlegged in the '90s, and often supplemented by a host of covers Metallica had released on singles and compilations throughout the years. By 1998, the band had understandably grown frustrated with this situation and decided to confront the problem head-on by reissuing all these rarities. Savvy businessmen that they are, they also realized they needed to give hardcore fans who already owned all the covers a reason to purchase the new set -- hence, the expansion of the Garage Days EP to the double-disc blowout Garage, Inc. The second disc's rarities are balanced by the first disc's new covers, the bulk of which were recorded following the Reload tour. It shouldn't come as a surprise that these covers recall the blooze 'n' boogie heavy rock of the Loads, but what is a surprise is that Metallica seems to have found their footing in this style through other people's songs. Whether it's Bob Seger, Blue Öyster Cult, Thin Lizzy, Nick Cave, or the all-star jam on Lynyrd Skynyrd's Tuesday's Gone, the band effortlessly makes the songs seem like their own, through a bizarre mix of respect and ballsy irreverence. ... And if raw is what you want, the equally diverse disc two provides all the thrills you could hope for. At one time, it might have seemed a little odd that Metallica would cover Budgie, Diamond Head, the Misfits, and Queen, but if Garage, Inc. proves anything, it's that the group's musical instincts, risks, and sense of humor have made them the greatest metal band of the '80s and '90s.

Anthems, Anthrax's eight-track EP that pays tribute to the classic songs by some of Anthrax's favorite bands from the 1970s. Anthems's track listing features Rush's ''Anthem,'' Thin Lizzy's ''Jailbreak,'' ''TNT'' by AC/DC, Boston's ''Smokin','' ''Big Eyes'' by Cheap Trick, Journey's ''Keep on Runnin,'' as well as the album version and a special remix of Anthrax's ''Crawl'' from the band's critically-acclaimed 2011 album Worship Music.

Said the band's vocalist Joey Belladonna, ''These are all bands I grew up with and have listened to forever. It's just great music. I had fun singing these songs and I was happy recording together with Anthrax, doing classic rock songs. Fun stuff!''

On Boston's ''Smokin','' Anthrax brought in a special guest to play keyboards - Fred Mandel, who has played with Alice Cooper, Queen, Elton John, Cheap Trick, Supertramp and on Pink Floyd's The Wall. About the track, drummer Charlie Benante said, ''If ever there were a perfect first album, it's Boston's first album. The harmony leads they did would later be heard by Iron Maiden, which of course would lead to thrash metal.''
