Features Mono Bonus Tracks & 11 Of Pete Townshend's Demos From Before The Album's Original Release
In the half century since its release The Who's debut album MY GENERATION has lost none of it's raw visceral power and still stands as the ultimate musical declaration of teenage rebellion. The title track alone has been covered innumerable times by the likes of Oasis, Green Day, Patti Smith, Billy Joel, Alice Cooper and Iron Maiden amongst many more.
Back in 1965 the band were considered to be so dangerous that the tailors tasked with turning a Union Jack into a pop art mod jacket for the cover feared that they would be jailed for desecration of the nation's flag.
The Who's surly demeanor that day in 1965 at London's Surrey Docks and the brazen appropriation of the symbol of state is the best advert possible for MY GENERATION It's an album that sounds like it looks: terse, confrontational and full of youthful angst and energy.
Brunswick Records first issued MY GENERATION in the UK in December 1965, and later in the US, under the title THE WHO SINGS MY GENERATION, in April 1966. It was produced by Shel Talmy who shot to fame with his work with The Kinks, a group that the teenage Pete Townshend admired greatly.
During a break in touring in 2015 Pete Townshend discovered tapes in his audio archive featuring previously unheard demos for the album which also included three totally unreleased songs that the other members of The Who hadn't ever even heard, 'The Girls I Could Have Had', 'As Children We Grew'and 'My Own Love'.LP 1: Original LP - Mono mixes

Some Girls: Super Deluxe EditionRanked 269/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
Includes the Original Album Remastered on CD, a Bonus CD with Extras Unearthed by Producer Don Was, a 7 Single, DVD, Unseen Photos by Helmut Newton and an Essay by Anthony DeCurtis
Universal Music Group and The Rolling Stones present the remastered, expanded, Super-Deluxe edition of their groundbreaking 1978 album, Some Girls, which introduced the band to a whole new generation of fans. Justly considered one of the finest works by Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Bill Wyman and Ronnie Wood, Some Girls topped the US charts over three decades ago and remains the best selling album of their storied career.
In addition to the remastered album on CD and some undiscovered gems recently unearthed from the Rolling Stones vaults by producer Don Was, the Super Deluxe Edition of Some Girls will include a stunning, previously unseen Helmut Newton photo session from 1978, an essay by esteemed author and journalist Anthony DeCurtis putting the album in its cultural context, a 7 vinyl single of Beast of Burden b/w When The Whip Comes Down in its banned sleeve and Ken Regan shots from the era.
Some Girls is the Rolling Stones' most direct and diverse collection of material from Mick Jagger's irresistible falsetto on the four-on-the-floor filler Miss You, their eighth U.S. #1, to the country-flavored Far Away Eyes via the Chuck Berry meets punk snarl of Respectable. And let's not forget the sensuous, Beast of Burden, one of Keith Richards' finest tunes, which reached #8 on the U.S. singles chart, the garage rocker Shattered, the albums' third U.S. Top 40 entry, and the soulful swagger of the group's version of The Temptations' Just My Imagination, another timeless offering in their canon of classic Stones Motown covers.
Following the critical praise and commercial success afforded the re-mastered, expanded editions of Exile On Main Street, which matched the chart performance of the epochal 1972 album, and returned the Rolling Stones to their rightful place at the top of the British charts in 2010, the extensive reissue of Some Girls constitutes the next step in the band's ongoing relationship with Universal Music Group.
Some Girls holds a special place in the history of the Rolling Stones and demonstrates why they remain one of the most thrilling and influential bands of all time. The 1978 album features the Keith Richards' classic Before They Make Me Run, a signature song he still performs defiantly to this day. Some Girls documented Mick Jagger's love of 1970's funk reflected in Miss You, the dance track that wrong footed many people, made the club and black charts, and made it okay for other mainstream acts at the time to 'go disco'.
The 1978 album also courted controversy because of Jagger's tongue-in-cheek lyrics on the title track, on Miss You and on Respectable, perceived as a retort to the punk and new wave groups who had borrowed so much attitude and copped so many anti-establishment moves from the Rolling Stones. Ironically, the furor around the elaborate Some Girls package, designed by Peter Corriston and featuring the band members in drag, a nod in the direction of the picture on the 1966 single Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing in the Shadow? and likenesses of Lucille Ball, Farrah Fawcett, Raquel Welch, Judy Garland and Marilyn Monroe that hadn't been legally cleared, necessitating a swift withdrawal and rethink.
Some Girls demonstrated the distinctive and definitive riffing from Keith Richards, with its abundance of unstoppable licks and majestic power chords driving the band into its brand new musical direction. This album not only defined him and his playing, but also defined a new era for the Rolling Stones, with Richards since described as a sense of renewal. Some Girls marks the only other time since recording Satisfaction where Richards used an effects pedal to 'elevate' the sound.
The album cemented the position of guitarist Ronnie Wood, who had joined in 1975, and added his trademark slide and pedal steel playing to several of the album's most memorable tracks, including When the Whip Comes Down and Shattered. He also co-wrote the Shattered B-side Everything Is Turning To Gold. Some Girls also marked a move to the Pathe Marconi Studios in Paris for the Glimmer Twins production team of Jagger and Richards. These factors helped what is arguably the group's most focused and dynamic album, driven by the sans pareil rhythm section of drummer Charlie Watts and bassist Bill Wyman.
Some Girls featured fewer guest musicians than any Rolling Stones album since 1971, but the contributions keyboard-player Ian McLagan, Wood's bandmate in The Faces, saxophone-player Mel Collins, and harmonica player Sugar Blue (discovered busking on the Paris metro), made Miss You in particular sound brighter than ever.
Thirty-three years on from its original release, the re-mastered expanded, Super Deluxe edition of Some Girls shows exactly why the 1978 album has often been hailed as the equal of Exile On Main Street. The album stands as both a time capsule and a timeless listen and it features the band at their tightest and toughest, at their most vibrant and vital.CD 1 (Some Girls Remastered)

My Favorite Picture Of YouAs one of the most revered songwriters of his generation, Clark embodies the term "songwriter's songwriter." The simplicity of the recording shines brightly while capturing Clark's beautifully understated and road worn vocals. Clark co-wrote 10 of the 11 tracks on My Favorite Picture Of You and dug very deep for each performance on this truly inspired collection.
The album's heartfelt title track was written for Susanna Clark, Guy's wife of 40 years, and a successful songwriter in her own right, who passed away in 2012. If a picture says a thousand words, then the cover photo of My Favorite Picture Of You declares an entire life. The cover depicts Clark, slightly blurred in the background, holding up an old photo of his beloved from the 1970s. According to Clark, Susanna walked in and found he and friend, the late Townes Van Zandt drunk, again. She stormed out of the house, which is when the Polaroid was taken.
The song is a loving tribute that melts your heart while making you smile. As a master songwriter, Guy Clark has always made us smile by infusing his wry wit into thoughtful storytelling.
Clark's vocals on My Favorite Picture Of You exude truth, wisdom and warmth, only touching on the insight he has gained from an extraordinary life. From the delicate sweetness of "Cornmeal Waltz" to the poignant story of the veteran returned a changed man in "Heroes" to the determined "Hell Bent On A Heartache," Clark delivers a standout album in a four-decade career overflowing with high points.
In 2004, Guy Clark was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. He received the Americana Music Association's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005, and in 2013, he received the Academy of Country Music's Poet's Award, along with Hank Williams. However, Clark's multiple Grammy Award nominations and accolades merely hint at the immeasurable impact his songs and recordings have had. He has been a mentor to artists such as Steve Earle and Rodney Crowell and his songs have been covered by a multitude of artists, including Johnny Cash, Brad Paisley, David Allen Coe, Ricky Skaggs, Vince Gill, Alan Jackson, Kenny Chesney, Jimmy Buffet, Asleep At The Wheel and many others. After 40 years of songwriting, Guy Clark continues to be lauded and admired by his peers, critics and artists young and old from different genres...and he is not done yet.1. Cornmeal Waltz

Live At The Isle of Wight Festival 1970White Colored Vinyl
Live at the Isle of Wight Festival 1970 is a 3 LP live album by The Who, recorded at the Isle of Wight Festival on 29 August 1970, and released by Sony in 1996. The Who were one year and three months into their Tommy tour when they played their second engagement at the Isle of Wight Festival. As in 1969, they played most of their famous rock opera, which by this time was quite familiar to the festival crowd. Huge spotlights bathed the audience of some 600,000 attendees, and as The Who's tour manager John Woolf recalls, attracted every moth and flying nocturnal animal on the island. By August 1970, Pete Townshend was already introducing new songs to the setlist including Water, I Don't Even Know Myself and Naked Eye. These songs, which were being recorded at the time of the festival, were intended for an upcoming project known as Lifehouse. Although Lifehouse was eventually abandoned, the sessions paved the way to the Who's classic album Who's Next. The Who also performed some live staples such as Heaven and Hell, Substitute, My Generation, Magic Bus, I Can't Explain, and the perennial covers of Shakin' All Over and Summertime Blues.LP1

FROOTFroot is the upcoming third studio album by Welsh recording artist Marina Diamandis, professionally known as Marina and the Diamonds.
Welsh by birth, kaleidoscopic by nature, Marina Diamandis is a serial college drop-out who once dressed up as a boy to audition for a reggae boy-band, hoping to amuse the record label into signing her. After further failed auditions (girl bands, musicals), in a fit of ambitious pique, she taught herself piano and created Marina and The Diamonds in 2005 (it's just her, the Diamonds are the audience). She was a MySpace generation D.I.Y powerhouse who hand-made and sold her own CDs to Rough Trade until being signed to Warner Music Group's '679 Recordings' in 2008.
Acclaimed overnight as an intriguing, confrontational and theatrical amalgam of Kate Bush and PJ Harvey, she was nominated in 2010 for both the Brits Critic's Choice Award and the BBC Sound of 2010. She looks back on her early years, now, with some ambivalence. I experimented with my voice a lot, I was young, amateurish and ambitious she decides. I feel different now. My voice is far more controlled and my writing style has matured. For me, it's a real, coherent step-up. I would love to one day be a great artist.1. Happy

Live North America 2016Back when music was only available on a vinyl album, the pure excitement captured on a live album was considered the ultimate document coveted by hardcore music fans. Clark continues this tradition by bringing the live album to a younger generation of music fans. Live North America 2016 was recorded absolutely live, with no overdubs. What you hear is how it went down.
The album includes all new and unreleased live recordings from Gary Clark Jr's 2016 tour in support of his internationally acclaimed 2015 album The Story of Sonny Boy Slim. It features several songs from that album, including The Healing, Grinder, Our Love, Cold-Blooded, and Shake, featuring Leon Bridges and his saxophonist Jeff Dazey. The set is characterized by raw soul and funk, classic solo and blues performances, and several lengthy, tour de force guitar jams. It includes two previously unreleased covers, Jimmy Reed's Honest I Do and Elmore James' My Baby's Gone as well as You Saved Me and When My Train Pulls In - fan favorites from Clark's Warner Bros. Records critically praised debut Blak and Blu.
Clark's incendiary performances were also beautifully captured on Gary Clark Jr. Live, which was released in September 2014 and met with tremendous critical and commercial acclaim. Both live albums chronicle Clark's evolution on stage as his songs expand and find new life beyond the studio recordings. Much like the great blues, jazz, and soul legends of past, these recordings are lightening in a bottle - historical moments in time for an artist who is ever-morphing and one of the truly great improvisers of his generation and our time.LP 1

Love The FutureWith their debut album Love the Future, the Harvard duo of D.A. Wallach and Maxwell Drummey, have boldy produced an album that is poised to break barriers and set new standards. The glorious She Loves Everybody mixes sensibilities equally drawing on Motown and power-pop. Beneath the Veil throws country twists into hip-hop aesthetics. Neal has echoes of swing, hip-hop and rock with a guitar break paying tribute to Les Paul.
The band has already been lauded by the press with features such as Spin's Who's Next `08 and Rolling Stone's Artists To Watch. And take it from no less than Pharrell Williams, who signed the unclassifiable duo to his Star Trak/Interscope label after an early copy of the album, recorded by the two largely in a dorm basement studio while they were students at Harvard, was passed from them to his engineer, Drew Coleman.
It's been a long time since I've heard a project teeming with this sort of musicality and originality, says Williams, the phenomenal artist/producer/trailblazer of Neptunes, N.E.R.D. and various other projects. You're going to watch history unfold with these guys. I feel it in my gut. That works for Wallach and Drummey, who trace an aesthetic lineage from Beethoven to Brian Wilson, from Les Paul to Prince to, well, Pharrell Williams. Mastered by Kevin Gray, most from the original master tapes, and plated and pressed by Quality Record Pressings, the finest LP pressing facility in the world, these are awesome recordings to experience. And the look of each album befits its sonic superiority! Presented in old school Stoughton tip-on jackets, these time honored favorites shine brighter than the originals!
Today! was released in stereo for the first time in 2012. These stereo mixes were created between 2005 and 2012 using the first generation basic tracking session multitracks, synced with the overdubs that were later added on second and third generation masters, to create the first true stereo mixes!
Apart from Surfin' Safari, which was mono only, the Beach Boys did turn in stereo masters on all of their early albums up until 1965. The Beach Boys Today! was the first LP for which they only delivered a mono master.
The stereo editions of Surfin' USA, Surfer Girl, Little Deuce Coupe, Shut Down Vol. 2, All Summer Long, Beach Boys Christmas Album and Beach Boys Concert were all mixed in stereo by their own preferred engineer, Chuck Britz, ostensibly under the group's supervision.
Brian may or may not have been present for those mixing sessions - evidence suggests that he trusted Chuck's skills enough to let him prepare those mixes on his own - but the group held onto their multitrack tapes and delivered stereo masters to Capitol, rather than allowing Capitol to prepare their own stereo versions. Later, when Brian was only delivering mono masters, Capitol would prepare the Duophonic pseudo stereo editions for the stereo market, says Alan Boyd, producer and Beach Boys' archivist.
All of the newer stereo mixes on these remastered albums (The Beach Boys Today!, Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!), The Beach Boys' Party, Pet Sounds and Smiley Smile) were all done by Mark Linett on behalf of the Beach Boys.
Put simply, this is the Beach Boys at their mid-'60s prime. Ironically, the band's greatest evolutionary leap was spurred by its leader, Brian Wilson, who decided to drop out of the band's live performances after a December 1964 nervous breakdown to concentrate on honing the Beach Boys' studio sound. With Wilson's productions gaining a significant new depth and confidence (note the innovative modulations on 'Dance, Dance, Dance'), the first half of Today seems a logical, upbeat step forward from its predecessors. But it's the album's second act that steals the show, setting the stage for the triumph of Pet Sounds. Indeed, it's easy to imagine gorgeous, introspective tracks such as 'Please Let Me Wonder,' 'She Knows Me Too Well,' and 'In the Back of My Mind' intertwined with the best of Sounds. - Amazon.com1. InfinityYann Tiersen says of his new record," (Infinity) is my eighth studio
album, and an '8' is also the sign of infinity. I didn't choose the title, the
title chose itself." This very special album features tracks in English,
Icelandic, Faroese, and Tiersen's native tongue, Breton.
Tiersen's Breton heritage is integral to who he is personally and
sonically. He currently lives on Ushant Island, off the coast of Brittany,
France where much of this album was recorded. Unlike Tiersen's well
known Amelie soundtrack, (Infinity) is sweeping, rife with texture,
and at times orchestral. The barren, stone topography of Ushant
Island was a major influence on Tiersen. First single, "A Midsummer
Evening", is dense with manipulated textures, strings and choral
chanting, harvested from rugged, remote locations.
Yann Tiersen is one of the most revered artists of his generation with
a reputation first established by his studio albums, the earlier of which
were combined and used for the Amelie soundtrack (2001), earning him
global recognition. His prominence has only grown with projects such
as the recent live score to the Fantômas series which he curated at the
ThÉâtre de Châtelet with guests Tim Hecker, James Blackshaw, Loney
Dear and Amiina.

Feel The NoiseYeah, it's a concept man. Rock n' roll... remember that? Well I do, like it was yesterday. Standing on the corner of Hollywood & Vine in LA or on Columbus & Broadway in front of Aquarius Records in North Beach San Francisco circa 1975... Thinking that all I wanted to do is rock out, so sick of everything I was hearing on the radio, all those bands seemed to suck to me, I couldn't understand what happened to the real rock n roll that I grew up on. Where did it go ? Where were the balls? Where were the guts? Where were the songs that blew my mind, the guitar licks, the harmonies... what happened? For too many years after that all I heard was the same old thing... "rock n roll is dead". Every time I heard it, it made me mad, it made me think... yeah... FUCK YOU! Then I heard the Ramones, and things got better for a while, and then it got bad again. Then I heard Nirvana and things got better again for a while, then they got bad again, but at that point I didn't really care anymore because I knew that Rock N Roll was never gonna die... you know why? Because there will always be a new generation of kids who will dig this shit as much as I do... Feel The Noise! Remember kids, the future is in your hands! Keep on Rocking!

REDD-REA-5613xNusrat Fateh Ali Khan
Mustt Mustt (Awaiting Repress)The late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is today acknowledged as the great master of Qawwali who popularised this beautiful and inspirational music beyond Muslim peoples to a worldwide audience and into a whole new musical territory. Mustt Mustt shows Nusrat's willingness to experiment with his music - to strive for new ideas and to listen to new styles - and to create more contemporary albums that could sit alongside the traditional collection.
In their Qawwali performances, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Party had begun to modify their style to suit the audience. Around the time this album was released, 1990, the Asian younger generation didn't bother with Qawwali - it bored them and was too slow. They wanted faster beats. 'I made my own style.' said Nusrat, 'We update Qawwali with the times.'
Nusrat was happy to experiment on this album - he was always striving for new ideas, just as he was always listening to new styles of music. This, however, didn't mean Nusrat would stick entirely to modern techniques - traditional albums like Shahen-Shah and those recorded in Pakistan would continue to be made.1. Mustt Mustt

Live From Austin, TX (Fats Domino)In my humble opinion, this is the definitive Fats Domino performance ever captured on camera. First of all, like his hero Louis Armstrong a generation earlier, Fats is synonymous with New Orleans. Not to mention the early days of rock-and-roll. Who doesn't love the infectious lyrics and floating melodies of "Blueberry Hill," "Ain't That A Shame," "I'm Walkin'," "I'm In Love Again" or "Blue Monday?" Music was practically a birthright for Antoine Domino, Jr., one of nine kids from a poor family. He never made it past 4th grade, but he was already playing boogie-woogie piano. By the time he cut his first record at 21, he already stood out from the crowd with his baby face smile, rollicking beat and that magic voice - youthful, warm and rich. Despite all the hits, his records don't do justice to the incredible excitement and energy of his live shows, driven by one of New Orleans' preeminent bandleaders and Fats' mentor, Dave Bartholomew. Fats is notoriously shy, but I pursued him to Las Vegas in my quest to lure him to the ACL stage. I found him in the old Elvis suite at The Flamingo, where he sat in his bathrobe peeling fresh Louisiana shrimp. I don't remember what I said or he said, but it worked - a few weeks later he came to Austin. When Hurricane Katrina hit, Fats had to be rescued from his home, sharing the trauma and devastation with his old neighbors in the Lower Ninth Ward. But don't worry - careers fade and styles change, but the music of Fats Domino is timeless.

All For You is a tribute to the Nat King Cole Trio by a woman who is better equipped than any other jazz musician of her generation to evoke the spirit of Nat Cole. Special NightThere are a few terms that get thrown around loosely, two of which are legend and retro-soul. One of these fits Lee Fields hand and glove, one of these doesn't fit at all. Very few people in music have both earned the status of legendary and continue to solidify it. 50 years in the game and only getting better, gaining more fans, and evolving his sound on each album, Lee is, in fact, a Living Legend. This brings us to the misuse of the term retro-soul when talking about Mr. Fields. You don't have to look far to find a younger generation emulating the essence and styles of an era they've only experienced through music and movies. It seems unfair to tag Lee with a term that implies imitation when he is part of the generation that actually defined the genre. Plain and simple, this is not that. Special Night is a master class in soul music past and present.
"I feel that every human being's purpose is to do what their inner voice says to do," says Lee Fields. "And my inner voice, my driving force, wants me to put out music and keeping making better records."
Produced by Leon Michels and Thomas Brenneck, and brilliantly performed by the Expressions, Special Night was written, recorded, mixed, and mastered entirely to tape in three weeks at the legendary Diamond Mine Studios in Queens, NY. A sense of urgency, equal parts fun and inspiration, and a decent amount of beer and Jack Daniels were the driving forces during the sessions that produced Lee Fields & The Expressions latest offering.
Special Night is also the first record in the Expressions catalogue in which every song was written jointly by Lee Fields and The Expressions. "When I record, I make every song like I actually mean it. I mean every word I say. On Special Night I'm talking to my lady - literally, expressing the way I feel." says Lee Fields. "You can tell if a song is real or not, and every moment I'm recording, those moments are real, this is a record about what people do in real life". For one example, he cites the song "Work to Do," which tells the story of "a guy going to counseling, drinking too much, apologizing to the old lady and trying to keep family together, doing the manly thing." On "Make This World", Lee makes a nod back to his early funk roots with a cautionary tale about the health of the planet. The world was designed to last indefinitely," says Fields. "We're the only living species on Earth who can alter that process. I'm hoping that song has a chain reaction, helps somebody put into action whatever contribution they can to change what the world is going through." As always, sticking to the formula but pushing the boundaries "Never Be Another You" from the first note doesn't sound like something you would hear on a Lee record, that is until he starts singing anyhow. A low-tempo ballad with a head nodding drum track, sparse piano lines, and all the space Lee needs to lay down what is sure to be one of the flyest love songs of 2017.
Whether tackling a tune about love lost, found, or broader topics like the state of humanity, Lee has a very unique and honest perspective that is on display with each unforgettable performance. Also, The Expressions have never been sharper, they, along with Lee, have created a collection of music on Special Night which holds court with pretty much any soul music that came before it1. Serge Gainsbourg (1928-1991): the original bad boy of French pop, the man all women wanted and all men wanted to be. He updated the French chanson and made it hip again, infusing it with the youth culture of the late 50s and 60s: one that was ruled by jazz, drugs and free love. The music of Gainsbourg heralded in this new era and his earliest songs became the soundtrack for a generation of Parisian youths. Side A features songs that originally appeared in 1959 on his second album (here in stereo), No. 2. Here Gainsbourg fronts the Alain Goraguer et Son Orchestre on songs like Le Claqueur de Doigts, a song about seducing chicks at a jukebox....a standard operating tactic for Gainsbourg! While side B features material from his 1958 debut, Du Chant a la Lune!, which featured early hits like Le Poinconneur Des Lilas the morbid tale of a Paris Metro ticket man who contemplates suicide to free him from the monotony of his life. Tracks 1-3 on side B were recorded live at the Theatre des 3 Baudets in November, 1958, while tracks 8-10 are taken from Gainsbourg's score for Jacques Doniol-Valcroze's 1960 film L'Eau a la Bouche (A Game for Six Lovers). While it has always been somewhat difficult for English audiences to appreciate Gainsbourg, due to the language barrier that keeps us from fulling appreciating the sharp wit and raunchy innuendos that permeate his brilliant lyrical style, I find that if I allow the music to carry me to the world of 1960s Parisian vice, my imagination can fill in the rest!Side A :

New York Before The WarJesse Malin returns in the New Year with a brand new album: New York Before The War, preceded by a single, Addicted.
Arriving almost five years on from his last record (2010's Love It to Life), Jesse's artistic ambitions for New York Before the War, were high: he knew he had to make it count. "I wanted to make a record that encompassed everything I've done, since I started with my hardcore band, Heart Attack, when I was twelve or or thirteen through bands like D Generation and then my solo career, but I also wanted to challenge the listeners who have been with me - and challenge myself."
Pared down from close to forty songs, New York Before the War album more than matches that ambition: A soundtrack to a life lived with meaning. "This is an era when music is so disposable," Malin worries. "People talk about the death of the album and even the death of rock & roll. But this is not just a shuffle of songs. There is a cinematic thread, a story."
Sessions for the album began in Virginia, Nashville before moving on to New York, finishing up at the Magic Shop in Soho. Players include such downtown New York all-stars as guitarist Derek Cruz, bassist Catherine Popper and drummer Randy Schrager. Don Dilego produced early sessions for the album in Virginia, and Malin and Cruz co-produced in New York. Brian Thorn, who worked on David Bowie's The Next Day, engineered and mixed the album.
Opening with The Dreamers, a haunting ballad that evokes both the alienation and the sense of deep connection that travel can bring (and very nearly became the album's title track), the album moves on through darker meditations like She's So Dangerous and Bar Life. Elsewhere, taut, upbeat rockers like Freeway (which features a blistering solo by the MC5's Wayne Kramer) and Turn Up the Mains (with Alejandro Escovedo on backing vocals) dictate the pace and Peter Buck contributes a vintage R.E.M.-style guitar part to I Would Do It For You, a tale of personal loyalty filled with longing and an aching sense of conviction.1. Music For Bang, Baaroom, And HarpAnalogue Productions and Quality Record Pressings bring you this remastered and improved pressing so that a whole new generation of audiophiles and even casual music lovers can discover for themselves the wizardry, wit and wonder that is Music for Bang, Baaroom and Harp!
Remastering and lacquer cutting by Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound from the original 3-track tapes
200-gram pressing by Quality Record Pressings!
Little did any of us who were involved in the planning and recording of Music for Bang, Baaroom and Harp know, back in 1958, what an impact this album would have on the record industry and how it would effect my career, writes Dick Schory, about the audiophile instrumental classic, the first stereophonic recording in the industry to be classified a Best Seller.
Now, revel in the enhanced clarity and sonic richness of a 200-gram pressing by Quality Record Pressings, and remastering and lacquer cutting by Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound, giving this classic a fresh, vibrant appeal. The superb remastering from the original 3-track master tapes brings out subtleties of the instruments, arrangements, performance and ambiance of Chicago's Orchestra Hall lacking from the original pressing and subsequent versions.
The concept for this album is simple: Dozens of standard and exotic percussive instruments (re: manifold from a 1946 Chevrolet) were employed in original and standard tunes arranged by Schory, Bobby Christian, Mike Simpson, Willis Charkovsky and Skitch Henderson, who at the time was musical director for NBC's Tonight Show. Three tracks are of particular note: the quirky Tiddley Winks and the exotic Baia and Typee. The jacket, depicting Schory poking out from a pile of instruments, is a classic of LP art.
The recording, utilizing RCA Victor Record's Red Seal Classical Division's equipment - the same used to record the Chicago, Philadelphia and Boston Symphony orchestras at the time - was recorded in Chicago's Orchestra Hall on June 2 and 3, 1958. Two custom Ampex 300-3 half-inch 3-track tape recorders, running at 15 and 30 inches a second, captured the performances by eight percussionists together with other performers from the Chicago Symphony on piano, string bass, guitar, banjo and harp.1. CeremonyIt begins with the sound of a church organ, an arpeggio played on the lower notes, a melody teased out in the higher register, before a snare drum beats out an ominous, stuttering tattoo. Three minutes in, guitars begin to rumble like clouds gathering on the horizon, the melody slowly swelling, threatening to tear the sky apart. This is Anna Von Hausswolff's "Epitaph Of Theodor", and as dramatic, instrumental openings to albums go, it's close to overwhelming. But it's followed by something even more intense: "Deathbed", which growls and resonates sinisterly before shards of metallic thunder shatter the drones and a funereal beat forces the song to lurch forward. Only after some four and a half minutes of this ferocious clamour do we hear a human voice, and it's unleashed with a fierce power, rising and swooping, a vast bird pursuing its prey until the song reaches its final, unexpectedly triumphant climax.
You want to talk about compromises? No. Nor does Anna Von Hausswolff.
These two songs alone represent a quarter of 'Ceremony's sixty minutes, but there are eleven more on an album that confounds and dumbfounds from its start to its end. To those who used Anna Von Hausswolff's debut album, Singing From The Grave, to compare her lazily to Kate Bush, it will come as a brutal shock. The fragile atmospheres of that impressive debut, one that earned her huge acclaim in her native Sweden, have been blasted away, and what's emerged from the wasteland left behind is a dizzying masterpiece that, she proudly states, calls upon, amongst others, Elizabeth Fraser, Jefferson Airplane, PJ Harvey, Earth, Barn Owl, Nick Cave and Diamanda Galás.
Though she now lives in Copenhagen, she grew up in the once vibrant, bohemian neighbourhood of Haga in Gothenburg, Sweden, to a family who counted amongst their ancestors Bernhard Reynold von Hausswolff, an 18th Century governor of Falun, Sweden, who helped bring an end to the burning of witches. Her father, Carl Michael von Hausswolff, is a composer and visual artist who's also co-monarch of the kingdoms of Elgaland-Vagaland, so it's perhaps not surprising that she's chosen to pursue a radical direction with her music.
"I didn't just want 'Ceremony' to be a collection of songs," she says. "I wanted it to be like a film, with every single part connected to the other, with shifting moods and settings, but a thread holding all the tracks together. I listen to a lot of film scores, and in many the music is able to move freely without the typical structures that we find in commercial music."
Arguably 'Ceremony's most significant ingredient is the church organ of Gothenburg's vast Annedalkyrkan, whose pipes are featured on the album's striking cover. Employed on nine of the album's thirteen tracks, it also provided von Hausswolff with the excuse to record for five days in the century old building, its cavernous space adding to the record's formidable magnitude. (Work was completed at weekends over several months in producer Filip Leyman's studios.) She found in the organ's sound a link between her own writing and a developing obsession with "drone metal", allowing her to add layers of thick textures to the songs. But - thanks to its inevitable associations with existence and mortality - the organ also suited the themes that lay at the heart of the record, which she defines as "nature and death, or the division of humanity and nature. From the moment we exit the womb, we start our paths towards materialism and destructive behaviour, and these days I feel that the gap between nature and human is growing bigger. I wanted to grasp my inner nature and be unified with nature again. 'Ceremony' is a celebration of life and everything that it contains, especially death, because in death we will be truly one with nature again."
That's not to say that 'Ceremony' is a bleak record, something highlighted by the extraordinary "Harmonica", which sounds like Dead Can Dance channelling a Vashti Bunyan song with arrangements by Ennio Morricone. "It's a song I wrote just after my grandfather passed away," she recalls. "It's about how culture and traditions can travel from generation down to generation, and in this case from him to me by music. Just before he died, he gave me a harmonica and he told me to practise hard and only write about things that are relevant to me. His deathbed inspired me to make 'Ceremony'."
He'd surely be proud of the bold, single-minded consequences of his legacy. Whether it be the placid but grandiose "Ocean", the hymnal "Mountains Crave", the grim, experimentalist "No Body" or the oddly exhilarating "Funeral For My Future Children", 'Ceremony' is a genuinely thrilling, timeless, inventive and even sometimes - in the purest sense of the word - gothic accomplishment.
"This record isn't really about Anna von Hausswolff as a vocalist or as a person," she concludes. "It's about the music and all that it contains. Singing from the Grave was a raw and emotional record that happened fast. I think of it as an impulse. 'Ceremony' is more of a vision: something unfinished and unresolved, a glimpse of the future."1.
