In The VinesRay Raposa had nearly finished this follow-up to 2005's First Light's Freeze when he was mugged at gunpoint outside his Brooklyn home. This climaxed a year of depression and nomadic, nocturnal dislocation for him. Appropriately, the album is based on a Hindu fable about being trapped in an inescapable fate, with death and the limitations of our physical lives closing in from all corners. But it isn't all darkness and peril; there's a strange sense of hope and delight in the brief moments of beauty that sustain our lives. UNIM-AST-0570xEmpire Of The Sun
Two VinesAlt-electro pioneers Empire Of The Sun return with their third studio album, Two Vines, set for release via Astralwerks. With Two Vines, the Australian band invites listeners to enter the jungle paradise that marks the third remarkable age of the Empire Of The Sun. Through a waterfall of dreams, beyond the white light of an ice curtain lies a lush, green world where childlike innocence and ancient wisdom are one. The album's first single, "High & Low," offers a glimpse of this dreamlike kingdom.
"We always saw Empire as a movie," says Nicholas Littlemore, the co-pilot with Luke Steele of this fantastic vessel of electro-futurist sound and vision. "The whole concept was based around childhood fantasies; being in bed and staring at the posters on your wall, whether they were monster movies or outlandish rock stars or pieces of art. We always wanted to be one of those posters on a child's wall that had so much imagination locked into it, a kind of invitation that pushes you over the edge into dream world. With this record, it's time to take that next step."
Recorded in Hawaii and Los Angeles, Two Vines is co-produced by Empire Of The Sun and Peter Mayes (Sia, The Killers, Mika), alongside long-term collaborator, Donnie Sloan (Midnight To Monaco). It also sees the creative circle expanding with esteemed pianist/arranger Henry Hey and bassist Tim Lefebvre, from David Bowie's Blackstar band, featured heavily on the album. Factor in Wendy Melvoin from Prince's Revolution, as well as Fleetwood Mac's genius guitarist/vocalist Lindsey Buckingham, and the Empire's rainbow has never been so vast and colorful.
"Going to Hawaii to record was the best idea," says Luke Steele of sessions at Honolulu's Avex Studios - where Kanye West recorded 2010's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. "That was the catalyst for me. I'd spend the morning surfing, then roll in and make music into the night."1. Before

One True VineComing off the huge success of her first collaboration with Wilco frontman
Jeff Tweedy - the Grammy winning You Are Not Alone - Mavis Staples
wanted to make their second album together both a continuation of the
joyous spirit of the first, and an evolution. With new song offerings from
Alan Sparhawk of Low, Nick Lowe, and three new Tweedy originals, One True
Vine is at once a darker and more uplifting album, anchored by reinventions
of two 70s classics - Funkadelic's "Can You Get to That?" and the Staples
Singer's "I Like the Things About Me." Tweedy and Staples have constructed
a dense narrative arc, that starts with the literal soulsearching of Sparhawk's
"One Holy Ghost" and Tweedy's "Jesus Wept," and then breaks wide open
with Nick Lowe'ssoaring "Far Celestial Shores," a song he wrote for Mavis
after touring together with Wilco. After that, the album builds to full tent
revival mode, as the dark night of the soul passes and joy arrives in the form
of Mavis' glorious voice. Closing out with Tweedy's rapturoustitle track,
One True Vine truly builds on the promise of You Are Not Alone, and will
delight the myriad fans discovering Mavis for the first time though her
Grammy wins and performances, her White House performance in the
tribute to Memphis Soul, and the glorious second act of this American icon.1. Holy Ghost

Fragments Of A Rainy SeasonFragments Of A Rainy Season is the first live John Cale album to feature him performing solo and "unplugged" - before that term became a mid-'90s buzzword. In contrast to the jaundiced punk truculence of Sabotage/Live (1979) or Even Cowgirls Get the Blues (1986), Fragments gives us Cale at his most melodic and moving, a mellowed and certainly a soberer man in a Yamamoto jacket and a lopsided haircut running through a selection of his prettiest songs.
The album features incredible versions of 'Paris 1919,' 'Dying On The Vine,' 'Chinese Envoy,' cover versions of the Elvis classic 'Heartbreak Hotel,' his devastating treatment of Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah' and a suite of Dylan Thomas' works 'On A Wedding Anniversary,' 'Lie Still, Sleep Becalmed' and 'Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night.'LP 1

ADAD-SEC-1515xAntony And The Johnsons
SwanlightsSwanlights is the new album from Antony and the Johnsons, set to release in North America via Secretly Canadian. While I Am a Bird Now was arresting in its simplicity and vision and The Crying Light is a masterpiece of austerity, Swanlights may be Antonys most wide-ranging emotional work to date.
It is a record that is at moments excruciating and tender, and at other times has a wicked gleam to its teeth. Musically its the most maximal of his work to date. Whereas on The Crying Light, Antony paired everything back to its most distilled and essential, on Swanlights the vines have become overgrown and the sound palette has become more exotic, strange percussive elements, John Cale-esque string drones, heavily distorted guitars and symphonic voicings thread the song cycle together.
Swanlights is the fourth Antony and the Johnsons album and the follow up to the critically acclaimed smash The Crying Light which topped year-end best of lists across the globe in 2009. UNIM-ATO-2518xHurray For The Riff Raff
Small Town HeroesIn 2014, Hurray for the Riff Raff release 'Small Town Heroes,' its debut for ATO Records. The album finds frontwoman Alynda Lee Segarra -
who settled in New Orleans after leaving her native Bronx at age 17.
Produced by Segarra and engineered by Andrija Tokic (Alabama Shakes), 'Small Town Heroes' features twelve new, original songs all written or cowritten
by Segarra, with support from a vivid cast of Crescent City musicians.
NPR has said that Hurray for the Riff Raff sweeps across eras and genres with grace and grit," never more so than on 'Small Town Heroes.' On the
hedonist country lament "I Know It's Wrong (But That's Alright)" Segarra sings to a forbidden love "I'll feed you watermelon off the vine," while on "The
Body Electric she exposes the misogyny of the traditional murder ballad, and warns Delia's gone, but I'm settling the score.
Ultimately though, many of the songs embody that most magical and fated of American cities, New Orleans. Segarra bears witness to a wave of violence
that struck the St. Roch neighborhood in St. Roch Blues; yearns for a night at BJ's Bar in the Bywater in Crash on the Highway; and sings of her own
Lower Ninth Ward home in End of the Line.
'Small Town Heroes' follows Hurray for the Riff Raff's self-released 2012 album 'Look Out Mama,' which led to a performance at the Newport Folk
Festival, and praise from Mojo, which compared Segarra to "a soulful, young Loretta Lynn," and The New York Times which hailed the group as part of
the loosely cohered movement of younger musicians embracing and reframing American roots music, giving it a polish of currency but otherwise leaving
its bones intact.1. Blue Ridge Mountain

I'm Glad I'm Not MeCritically acclaimed indie rockers Born Cages will release their debut studio album, I'm Glad I'm Not Me, via Washington Square/Razor & Tie.
I'm Glad I'm Not Me was recorded at Mission Sound (Metric, Arctic Monkeys, Matt & Kim) in Brooklyn, NY and was produced by Jon Kaplan (Cage The Elephant, Walk The Moon) and co-produced by Born Cages' lead singer Vlad Holiday. On the album, Holiday, bassist/keyboardist Matt Maroulakos and drummer Dave Tantao conjure festival-ready, truly modernist modern rock that is every bit as grand as its song titles would predict: "Bigger Than Me." "I Just Want The Truth, Baby." "Don't Look Back." "Finding Beauty in a Broken World."
I'm Glad I'm Not Me touches on rock, electronic, dance, alternative and everything in between, reaching listeners thought to be quarantined from each other. It's a record celebrating togetherness in fractious times, music that finds commonalities rather than chasms. Throughout, Born Cages play with an urgency that posits their music as something essential. I'm Glad I'm Not Me embraces its punchy hooks, economic arranging and distinct kind of New York City disillusionment; it's the despondency of being told your mere existence in the city is a sign of having "made it" and still feeling alone amongst the millions.
The album is the follow up to their critically acclaimed 2013 EP release, The Sidelines EP. Vice Noisey describes the band's music as a "blend of 80s-influenced synth/guitar work and modern pop-rock sounds," and Blackbook raved, "More than a decade after the riff-heavy heyday of The Strokes, The Vines, The White Stripes, The Hives, and many other bands that put the word "the" before a plural noun, we may be ready for another bout of ripping revivalism Born Cages, certainly makes that argument." The Born Cages Daytrotter Session made the Top 50 of 2014 list.
Lead singer and guitarist Vlad Holiday formed Born Cages in 2011 and the group dove head-first into New York City's eclectic indie rock movement. He is joined by Matt Maroulakos on bass/keyboards and Dave Tantao on drums. The band has shared bills with a bevy of acts such as Hockey, Magic Man, X Ambassadors, Gold Fields, Royal Teeth, Said The Whale, Donald Cumming (of The Virgins), Public Access TV, JD Samson (of Le Tigre) and Har Mar Superstar. In Spades"Cleromancy" isn't a word one normally finds in rock lyrics. Then again, In Spades - the forthcoming album by The Afghan Whigs, from which the new song "Oriole" hails - is defined only by its own mystical inner logic. The term means to divine, in a supernatural manner, a prediction of destiny from the random casting of lots: the throwing of dice, picking a card from a deck. From its evocative cover art to the troubled spirits haunting its halls, In Spades casts a spell that challenges the listener to unpack its dark metaphors and spectral imagery.
On the one hand, In Spades is as quintessentially Afghan Whigs as anything the group has ever done - fulfilling its original mandate to explore the missing link between howling Midwestern punk like Die Kreuzen and HÜsker DÜ, The Temptations' psychedelic soul symphonies, and the expansive hard-rock tapestries of Led Zeppelin and Lynyrd Skynyrd. At the same time, this new record continues to push beyond anything in the Whigs' previous repertoire - another trademark, along with the explosive group dynamic captured on the recording.
Indeed, the chemistry of the lineup - Dulli, guitarists Dave Rosser and Jon Skibic, drummer Patrick Keeler, multi-instrumentalist Rick Nelson, and Whigs co-founder/bassist John Curley - set the tone for In Spades' creation. When it came to follow up the band's triumphant return to recording - Do To the Beast (2014), which was the band's first ever Top 40 album, - the die was cast. "This is the first time since Black Love [the Whigs' 1996 noir masterpiece] that we've done a full-blown band album," Dulli says.
The joys, sorrows, and upheavals of innocence and experience echo throughout In Spades: it powerfully documents where The Afghan Whigs have been, and where they might go next. For Dulli and Curley, it's a journey that, since their origins as one of the first Sub Pop acts to be signed from outside the label's Pacific Northwest base, has spanned decades. Dulli notes they were barely in their twenties when they first started the band, and yet here they are, fulfilling dreams long held and frequently realized. "Having a break from the Whigs helped me remember what made it so rewarding," Curley says. "Over the course of a lifetime, there are constants, and there's also change. You see who's dropped off the vine - who's going in reverse, and who's still by your side. It's interesting to see where life takes you, and where it doesn't. That's the journey and it hasn't stopped."

LentemuziekPeter Broderick-produced debut from the Dutch singer/songwriter, Laura Arkana shows the promise of a new voice. The recordings are warm and unfussy. For her part, Arkana paints specific details into her song-vignettes and sings with a conversational lilt. For his part, Peter Broderick combines a wealth of experience with his signature restraint and sensitivity, letting the songs breathe while enhancing their textural depth and dynamics with stringed instruments, vocals and percussion.

SomeKindaWonderfulFateful encounters at Cleveland bars rarely lead to musical mythology, but SomeKindaWonderful have a different kind of story to tell.
A three-piece featuring Jordy Towers (vocals/lyrics), as well as Matt Gibson (guitar) and Ben Schigel (drums), the genre-bending group came together after Towers became a casualty of the major label system. Once signed to Interscope as a solo act, he refused to become yet another faceless persona and the label left him hanging on the vine. Towers knew it was time for a reset and headed to Ohio to re-examine his life.
"Im not the type to be defeated easily," says Towers. "You know, most people move to LA to make it, but I had to leave LA to find my path."
In January 2013, Towers took a trip to visit family in the suburban Cleveland town of Olmstead Falls (pop. 9,000). It was there that he fatefully crossed paths with Gibson and Schigel. While the local musicians were just intending to just grab some beers at a local bar, they found much more than they had anticipated when they came across Jordy.
"We were basically a band without a lead singer and he was a lead singer without a band," says Schigel. "We headed back to our studio the night we met and, literally three hours later, our first song Reverse was done."
To call "Reverse" the product of fate is an understatement. Endlessly catchy, the song feels both modern and classic, nodding to 60s soul and contemporary R&B with the dynamic range of big-room pop-rock and cinematic emotion. Its structure, which features Towers unraveling a backwards narrative with a cadence that merges rap and soul, provides a novel lyrical framework to a unique sound.
"Its an R&B soul rock record," says Towers. "It sort of mirrors my move from LA to Cleveland. That path is reversed from what youd expect. Nothing is deliberate. Just like how we met, its natural and all about the music. I still cant believe I met my musical soul mates at a bar in Ohio."1. Cornbread

Tunnel Blanket delivers the epic-in-scope soundscapes that followers of its makers previous recordings are accustomed to, but presents them in new lights, where once the sun shone down bright upon immediate tropes and traits, now their work is better suited to distant starlight, casting changeable shadows across vistas of inspired, ambitious ampli cation. Feel The NoiseYeah, it's a concept man. Rock n' roll... remember that? Well I do, like it was yesterday. Standing on the corner of Hollywood & Vine in LA or on Columbus & Broadway in front of Aquarius Records in North Beach San Francisco circa 1975... Thinking that all I wanted to do is rock out, so sick of everything I was hearing on the radio, all those bands seemed to suck to me, I couldn't understand what happened to the real rock n roll that I grew up on. Where did it go ? Where were the balls? Where were the guts? Where were the songs that blew my mind, the guitar licks, the harmonies... what happened? For too many years after that all I heard was the same old thing... "rock n roll is dead". Every time I heard it, it made me mad, it made me think... yeah... FUCK YOU! Then I heard the Ramones, and things got better for a while, and then it got bad again. Then I heard Nirvana and things got better again for a while, then they got bad again, but at that point I didn't really care anymore because I knew that Rock N Roll was never gonna die... you know why? Because there will always be a new generation of kids who will dig this shit as much as I do... Feel The Noise! Remember kids, the future is in your hands! Keep on Rocking!

Don't Lose ThisIn 1998, Roebuck "Pops" Staples recorded a final session, capping an
illustrious career as leader and patriarch of the Staples Singers. Unfinished
at the time of his passing in 2000, the tapes went to his daughter,
Mavis, who then waited for the right opportunity to finish the recording
in the spirit Pops intended. When she began her series of remarkable
collaborations with Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, starting with 2010's You Are Not
Alone and continuing with 2013's One True Vine, Mavis knew she had
found the person to work on her father's record. Mavis Staples: "I
chose this title because these were the words my father said to me as
he gave me the tape of his final recordings. He was sick and lying in
bed and asked me to play the record for him in his room. After listening
to it, he called me to his room again. He was weak, but he handed me
the tape and in a soft voice said 'Don't lose this, Mavis.' While Pops'
voice and guitar sounded so good on the original recordings [and remain
untouched on this record], I knew the songs needed something else to
really come to life. Something special. Pops deserved that. So I called
on my dear friend Jeff Tweedy to fill out the tracks around Pops and he's
helped to craft this beautiful album."1. Somebody Was Watching

Santana IVSantana IV is the wildly anticipated studio album that reunites the revered early '70s lineup of guitar icon Carlos Santana (guitar, vocals), Gregg Rolie (keyboards, lead vocals), Neal Schon (guitar, vocals), Michael Carabello (percussion) and Michael Shrieve (drums). The album signifies the first time in 45 years - since 1971's multi-platinum classic Santana III - that the quintet has recorded together.
Santana IV features 16 all-new tracks written and produced by the band that burst with the same unparalleled energy and superlative musicianship that made Santana a pioneering force in world music and a household name across the globe. Joining the core Santana IV band in the studio are current Santana members Karl Perazzo (percussion) and Benny Rietveld (bass), with the legendary vocalist Ronald Isley guesting on two cuts.
The origins for the reunion go back several years, when Schon suggested that he and Carlos Santana record together. Santana liked the idea but went one better, proposing that they recruit Rolie, Shrieve and Carabello for what would be called Santana IV. After initial writing sessions and rehearsals took place in 2013, the group recorded throughout 2014 and 2015, amassing 16 spellbinding tracks that combined all their signature elements - Afro-Latin rhythms, soaring vocals, electrifying blues-psychedelic guitar solos, and irrepressibly jubilant percussion work - with widescreen hooks and melodies that will lodge themselves in the thicket of listeners' senses and stay there.
It was magical, Santana says. We didn't have to try to force the vibe - it was immense. >From there, we then needed to come up with a balance of songs and jams that people would immediately identify as Santana.
The band's signature sound arrives forcefully on the album opener Yambu, a righteously gritty and soulful stomper teeming with swirling B3 organ hooks and walloping guitar crunch.
The first single, Anywhere You Want to Go, is destined to storm the pantheon of Santana classics. Written by Gregg Rolie, it's a sexy, body-shaking winner and an unmistakable tip of the hat to the inescapable cha-cha/Latin jazz charms of Oye Como Va.
Ronald Isley (The Isley Brothers) is a special guest on two tracks. His vocals highlight the feverishly impassioned Latin-rock workout Love Makes the World Go Round and the hard-edged and funky Freedom in Your Mind. Guitar fans expecting fireworks from Santana and Schon will cherish Santana IV from front to back. All Aboard is a no-holds-barred guitar jam of the highest order, as is the slinky, soulful metal cruncher Caminando, which explodes with tectonic axe force. And on the unabashedly British blues-tinged Shake It, the two go toe to toe on not one but two extended solo runs that will have lovers of unhinged fretboard work rejoicing.
Carlos and I feel more connected than ever, says Schon. We get super-aggressive when we play, but also melodic and poetic. We have an incredible dialog with each other on our guitars.
Santana's recurring themes of love and tolerance are common threads throughout Santana IV, most dramatically on the epic tone poem album closer Forgiveness, a languid and breathtakingly gorgeous atmospheric groover.
Music fans familiar with the roaring lion artwork on Santana's 1969 debut album will instantly greet Heather Griffin-Vine's graphic for Santana IV as a gloriously realized update of that iconic image. I really think the music goes along with the cover, and vice versa, says Santana. It all fits together beautifully.
Few bands can pick up a musical dialog after 45 years apart, but on Santana IV each band member reaches a new level of virtuosity and communal intuition on a collection of songs that easily stands side-by-side with the group's treasured early work.
When you can go back and break new ground with joy and determination - and some whoop-ass energy - it gets you going, says Santana. I think we achieved something very rare. This music was screaming to come out of us. It wasn't about nostalgia. It was about passion.1. Yambu
