First Time 180 Gram Audiophile Clear Vinyl Release

Mastered Impeccably By Monkees Fan & Friend Joe Reagoso At Friday Music Studios & Capitol Mastering, Hollywood, CA From The Colgems Record Tapes

    The Summer Of Love's First Album .... Re-Visited.... Re-Imagined...

    The Monkees Headquarters/ Stack-O-Tracks

The Original Instrumental Backing Tracks To Their Most Celebrated Album

    First Time Authorized Alternate Artwork

Yes... The Monkees Could Play Guitars, Bass, Drums, Piano, Steel Guitar, Organ, Banjo, Tambourine, Percussion..... and Play Them Well!!!

In 1967 after two number one albums, a plethora of hit singles and a smash television show, The Monkees were on top and knew they each had true musical talents not championed by their label executives. Michael Nesmith spearheaded a change in direction before sessions began on their legendary Headquarters album. This action resulted in the much-covered dissolution with music mogul Don Kirshner, as Chip Douglas (The Turtles) was now recruited by Nesmith to work with the band.

In rapid succession, things began to fall into place in February 1967. With initial tracks like country rocker Sunny Girlfriend, the band set the stage for what would become one of the most loved works in their catalog and one of the finest rock albums of a generation. A definite album opener, You Told Me begins Headquarters. The track features a brilliant 12 string guitar of Nesmith, as Tork's incredible banjo fills the track alongside Dolenz's driving drum work. With Jones' percussion, it became the very first song that many of us remember as we opened up our new copies back in the summer of '67. Not straying too far from previous success, the band scored a few more of Boyce and Hart compositions like Micky Dolenz's folk rock ballad I'll Spend My Life With You. The solid steel guitar work of Mike Nesmith became somewhat of a precursor to his groundbreaking Nashville sessions in the late sixties. Davy Jones has several watershed moments here with both Forget That Girl and Early Morning Blues and Greens Forget That Girl employs a unique English northern soul vibe, while the latter shares a wonderful rhythm presentation making it one of the more psychedelic infused and standout tracks on the LP. Michael Nesmith's handiwork is radiant on the entire album. You May Just Be The One rocks the album into full gear and makes it one of his and the bands' definitive landmark tracks. Headquarters also brought rightful acclaim to Peter Tork, as his first recorded Monkees' song For Pete's Sake soon became a prolific standard. The song transcended with the times and became one of the more insightful tunes from the quartet. It also replaced the familiar Monkees Theme at the end of season two, giving the song more TV exposure over the years. And as always, you can count on Micky Dolenz to deliver - whether it's his hard rock driving drum work on rockers like Randy Scouse Git & No Time, or his prog-rock feel on Mr. Webster, the album was definitely a great showcase for the artist.

The Monkees' Headquarters was one of 4 albums of The Monkees that topped the charts in 1967. This fact alone is enough to warrant the importance of this album in musical history. But there are other amazing feats that Headquarters managed to deliver to millions of fans on its eventful release back in May of 1967. The album hit the stores before Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band by The Beatles. Friendly rivals as they were, Headquarters rose to number one and also opened the door to The Summer of Love. It remained in the upper rung of the retail charts until their fourth platter Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd. became a number one album to close out the year. Wow! Most notably, Headquarters showed the real world the transition of four talented guys on a hit TV show evolving into a self-produced, self-reliant, and one of the most loved bands in musical history, and yes, they could actually play their instruments .and they did it well!

As another installment in our extensive Monkees catalog, Friday Music is pleased to announce a unique revisit to their third masterwork as we've now gone back to the original backing tracks and have assembled a fun and exciting instrumental Lp with The Monkees Headquarters Stack-O-Tracks. For this limited edition Friday Music release, we are pleased to offer for the first time on vinyl, the rare backing instrumental backing tracks, newly and impeccably mastered by Joe Reagoso (The Monkees/Brian Wilson) from the original Colgems Records masterwork.

Joe Reagoso notes You've never heard 'Shades Of Gray' until you hear the strings up front like you will on this new vinyl release. Michael Nesmith's work on 'You May Just Be The One' is beyond thrilling, you feel like you are in the studio with the band as they knock out this and other Monkees classics. From beginning to end, song after song, we always knew how special Headquarter was, and now this further showcases the artistry and musical acumen each man brought to the sessions. Truly a crowning achievement. To further enhance your Monkees listening enjoyment, we are also pressing the limited edition album on clear 180 Gram audiophile vinyl, as well as including a revisit to the original album cover artwork, now with the rare Monkees beard photo not issued on vinyl in many years, and first time authorized colorization effects to the original artwork to celebrate fifty years of this classic rock album for the fans. 1967 ..The Summer Of Love A very hip time in our American culture you can now relive with these newly impeccably mastered recordings from the much-loved band that broke a lot of ground in a very short time and made the world a much better place for it The Monkees Headquarters Stack-O- Tracks Only From Your Friends At Friday Music!

    Warren Zevon (1st)

Warren Zevon is a Rock & Roll album recorded in 1975 and released in 1976 by the artist of the same name. The album features guest appearances of artists like Jackson Browne, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks, Phil Everly, Don Henley and Glenn Frey, Bonnie Raitt and many more.

Warren Zevon was a ten-year music industry veteran who had written songs for The Turtles, backed up Phil Everly, done years of session work, and been befriended by Jackson Browne by the time he cut his self-titled album in 1976. Zevon sure didn't think (or write) like any of his pals in the Eagles or Fleetwood Mac; Zevon's music was full of blood, bile, and mean-spirited irony, and the glossy surfaces of Jackson Browne's production failed to disguise the bitter heart of the songs on Warren Zevon.

For all their darkness, Zevon's songs also possessed a steely intelligence, a winning wit, and an unusually sophisticated melodic sense, and he certainly made the most of the high-priced help who backed him on the album. This was the album that confirmed he was a major talent, and it remains a black-hearted Pop delight.

    Red Octopus

Mastered by Joe Reagoso and Kevin Gray at RTI from the Original RCA/Grunt Records Tapes

When Jefferson Airplane morphed successfully into Jefferson Starship in the mid-'70s, their musicianship, and recorded output was enthusiastically received and was a very important career move in the continuing story of these Bay Area superstars.

Red Octopus surely helped award them fame even further as this amazing Jefferson Starship LP went to #1 and soon became one of the many platinum plus ventures for this much loved and respected band. Their new formula worked tremendously as this watershed release featured a plethora of chart topping hits like Miracles, Play On Love, Fast Buck Freddie and There Will Be Love.

The band was rich with rock and roll history, consisting of Airplane mainstays Paul Kantner, Grace Slick, Marty Balin, plus later Airplane alumnus David Freiberg (Quicksilver), Papa John Creach, and Johnny Barbata (CSN+Y, Turtles), as well as new additions Craig Chaquico and Pete Sears. Jefferson Starship truly delivered the goods with Red Octopus as this album went on to quickly become a classic rock masterpiece!

Friday Music is no stranger to releasing some of the greatest music ever recorded by Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship, Starship and Hot Tuna, so it is with much honor they have announced the release of the masterwork Red Octopus on 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl. This limited edition masterpiece has been impeccably mastered by Joe Reagoso and Kevin Gray at RTI from the original RCA/ Grunt Records tapes.

In honor of their continuing 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl series on the Jefferson Airplane/Jefferson Starship franchise, Friday Music is also issuing this wonderful album with a very limited gatefold cover, which includes the original artwork elements, plus the lyrics and photos as you remember them from the original 1975 release. Ranked 338/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Quintessential 1968 Record a Potent Mix of Psychedelia, Blues, Folk, and Rock: Janis Joplin Delivers Cathartic Vocal Performance on Major-Label Debut That Includes Powerhouse Piece of My Heart

Mobile Fidelity 45RPM Vinyl Pressing Touts Superb Spaciousness, Punchiness, Dynamics, and Texture: Cheap Thrills Sounds As Close to Live as Music Gets and Features Robert Crumb Artwork

In many facets, Big Brother and the Holding Company's Cheap Thrills is the quintessential album to spring from the outcome of the Summer of Love. Best known as Janis Joplin's major-label debut, the 1968 set arrived when the countercultural movement was in full swing and before co-optation, drugs, and violence signaled the fall of the era. Ranked #338 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, it puts a female singer in the prominent position traditionally given to a male and showcases a band pouring a potent cocktail of fiery psychedelic, blues, and folk sounds that informed the unfettered creativity of the San Francisco scene. Produced by John Simon, Cheap Thrills also features one of the most iconic and elaborate album covers in history. Now, thanks to Mobile Fidelity, the instantly identifiable effort also possesses sonics equivalent to its visual and musical status.

Cut at 45RPM and pressed on dead-quiet vinyl at RTI, the iconic audiophile label's analog reissue intensifies the quintet's storied sophomore effort. Due to the wider grooves, this pressing benefits from increased spaciousness, punchiness, energy, pacing, and dynamics. Joplin's hurricane-force singing reverberates with texture, grittiness, and volume. An arresting array of instrumental colors and tones comes on with clearer separation and depth. While previous pressings find the band and Joplin's voice in competition with one another for room, both emerge as distinct entities. Always noted for its rawness, Cheap Thrills sounds as close to live as it gets, an unadulterated portrait of nervy rock n' roll delivered with exuberant enthusiasm and all-out determination. This is music at is most visceral.

Having drawn national attention for their legendary performance at the Monterey International Pop Festival in 1967, Big Brother and Joplin faced huge expectations to deliver a studio set that would convey their onstage vibrancy and potency. Cheap Thrills does this and more, becoming one of 1968's most commercially successful releases that remained on the charts the week Joplin announced her separation from the ensemble. Contrary to popular belief, only one of the album's songs, Ball and Chain, was recorded live. Everything else owes to the unhinged, spirit-elevating performances and true collaboration between vocalist and band that manifests itself throughout the record's 37-minute-plus running time. Merging biker-babe ruggedness with wounded-bird poignancy, Joplin's expressive belting, mega-watt moaning, and sensitive crooning take center stage. Yet her bandmates match every step with explosive rhythms, heavy guitar-driven blues, and assertive solos that take inspiration from free-form jazz.

Indeed, Cheap Thrills still exhilarates not only due to Joplin's almighty singing but because of boundary-shredding arrangements that reflect the period's anything-is-possible mindset. More so than any other musicians Joplin encountered, the members of Big Brother pushed limits on convention via soirees into acid-dipped psychedelia and its orbiting sonic galaxies. Together, they aim and achieve an aural mythos that makes a permanent connection between artist and audience by way of eliminating traditional divisions. Such communal power is evident on the mind-bending version of Big Mama Thornton's Ball and Chain and insistent, sinewy I Need a Man to Love. It's also obvious during quieter moments, whether the tripped-out, twisted, and curvaceous contours of George and Ira Gershwin's Summertime or restrained, throwback acoustic blues of Turtle Blues.

Yes, Joplin presents - and rallies against - loneliness and desperation in a cathartic language few had heard before or since. What's even more significant is the fearlessness, toughness, synergy, and sexual danger pulsing through every song, including the take-on-all-comers challenge Piece of My Heart, which the collective attacks with career-making ferocity. Like Robert Crumb's daring pop-art illustrations that grace the cover, they simultaneously lure and dare the listener to enter a space where outsiders run free and where outlaws are heard above the mainstream din.

    A Groovy Situation

A Groovy Situation finds organist Reuben Wilson turning in a funky collection of R&B and pop covers. Supported by guitarist Eddie Diehl, alto saxophonist Earl Turbinton, and drummer Harold White, Wilson runs through familiar soul hits like (If You Let Me Make Love to You) Then Why Can't I Touch You, A Groovy Situation, and Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours, plus the Turtles hit Happy Together. With songs like this, there's no question that Wilson is going for a wide audience, and while these smooth, funky grooves will do nothing for jazz purists, it's an entertaining record, and some of the grooves are quite hot indeed.

    The Phoenix And The Turtle

April 2014 will see the release of her new album entitled The Phoenix and the Turtle. Described by Beverley as a very personal album, it features songs written throughout her entire career, from her very first song, ''Sweet Joy'', to the previously unrecorded Nick Drake & Beverley Martyn song ''Reckless Jane'' which was started in 1974 when Drake lived nearby Beverley in Hampstead. ''We started writing the song as a bit of a joke,'' she says, ''When John and I lived in Hampstead Nick lived one stop down the tube line, and he would come around and babysit sometimes. I couldn't look at it for a long time after he died, but then finally I decided to finish it.''

''When The Levee Breaks' and 'Going To Germany' are songs Beverley used to sing with The Levee Breakers. Another song, 'Women And Malt Whiskey' is, in part, about John Martyn and other friends from the scene back then.

The Phoenix and the Turtle is Beverley's first album in fourteen years and was recorded in Wales with guitarist and producer Mark Pavey; it also features contributions from bass player Matt Malley, ex-Counting Crows and drummer Victor Bisetti, ex-Los Lobos which were recorded ''by the magic of computer'' in California. The album ''still has that in-a-room feel,'' said Beverley recently, ''it sounds like an old style analogue record. It's very me, very transatlantic.''

2007's Trouble is the third full-length release from the Duluth, MN progressive bluegrass quartet Trampled By Turtles. Produced by Rich Mattson and mastered by Dave Gardner, Trouble finds the group challenging tradition with the inclusion of electric instrumentation, drums, violin and cello. Alongside more conventional bluegrass fare like "Valley," "Arming of Infants," Like An Empty House and "Stranger" are pop leaning numbers like Still In Love With You, the foreboding Salvation, and instrumental pieces "Ceiling Slide" "Tap the Kitchen Floor" and "Spoiler." The 11-song set also features guest appearances by violinist/cellist Jesse Greene and Retribution Gospel Choir drummer Eric Pollard.

    Bob Dylan Greatest Hits

Released one year after his praised Blonde On Blonde [MOVLP245] album from 1966 and his motorcycle accident of that summer, Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits is the first compilation album by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, released in 1967. The album contains every Top 40 single Dylan enjoyed through 1967. It peaked at #10 on the Pop album chart in the United States, and went to #3 on the album chart in the United Kingdom. Certified five times platinum by the RIAA, it is his best-selling album in the U.S.

It is worth noting that The Times They Are a-Changin' made it to #9 as a single release in the United Kingdom and Blowin' in the Wind became a #2 hit single for Peter, Paul and Mary in 1963. The remaining six tracks all made the Billboard Top 40 in 1965 and 1966. A truncated rock and roll version of Mr. Tambourine Man had been a number one hit for The Byrds in the summer of 1965, and the Turtles took a folk-rock version of It Ain't Me Babe to #8 the same year.

The cover photograph and design won the 1967 Grammy award for Best Album Cover, Photography.

    The Preflyte Sessions

Before turning rock 'n' roll on its ear in the spring of '65, the Byrds spent countless hours creating and refining their unique sound at LA's World Pacific Studios. Hear history literally in the making as McGuinn, Crosby, Clark, Hillman and Clarke record newborn, spine-tingling versions of classics-to-be like Mr. Tambourine Man, You Won't Have To Cry, I Knew I'd Want You, and Here Without You, as well as lost gems such as The Reason Why, Tomorrow Is A Long Ways Away, and You Showed Me. (later a smash for the Turtles).

This is the most comprehensive collection of the Byrds' pre-Columbia recordings ever assembled. The double High-Definition Vinyl LP Preflyte Sessions set is filled with 40 World Pacific Studio recordings circa 1964 and '65; tracks include all cuts found on the original Together-label Preflyte album, plus unissued and alternate versions from both the acoustic and electric Byrds' sessions, early David Crosby demo recordings, and the rare pre-Byrds Jet Set recording of The Only Girl I Adore.

The Preflyte Sessions features a historical essay by Rolling Stone Senior Editor David Fricke -based on new interviews with Roger McGuinn, Chris Hillman, original Byrds' manager Jim Dickson and others present at the sessions, and is handsomely adorned with an absolute wealth of previously unpublished photos by Jim Dickson and legendary rock photographer Barry Feinstein. The Byrds' Preflyte Sessions captures the newly-kindled fire and enthusiasm of one of the most legendary and influential groups of all time.

    Adrenaline Rush

Adrenaline Rush, originally released in 1997, is the third studio album by rap artist Twista. It was his second album nationally released after his previous effort Resurrection was shelved outside of Chicago. The album had guest artists: Johnny P, Liffy Stokes, Miss Kane, Malif, Mayz and Turtle Banks. The first single off the album was Emotions, a song which reworked the chorus of the Do or Die hit Po Pimp (on which Twista was featured). The single Get It Wet charted on the Billboard Hot 100 at #96. With very little airplay or radio play outside the midwest, it went Gold.

For an artist who first gained success as a songwriter with superstars like The Turtles, Linda Ronstadt, and
Jackson Browne, Warren Zevon's own acclaimed recordings proved to be a major force on the music scene for many
decades. His music transcended all genres of rock and pop music styles, fusing melodic landscapes with thought
provoking and somewhat controversial lyrical content during his successful reign on the album and radio charts.

After reaching platinum heights with his very popular Excitable Boy LP (Friday Music 9006), his amazing follow-up album Bad Luck Streak In Dancing School hit the rock charts again thanks to the remake of The Yardbirds classic
A Certain Girl as well as his smash collaboration with Bruce Springsteen on Jeannie Needs a Shooter.

The twelve track masterpiece is loaded with some even more time honored Warren Zevon classics like the rockers Play It All Night Long, Wild Age and Junglework, as well as melodic ballads like Empty-Handed Heart featuring his

The Bad Luck Streak In Dancing School sessions featured the musical talents of not only Warren Zevon but his
superstar friends like Jackson Browne, Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Joe Walsh and Don Felder from The Eagles, David
Lindley, J.D. Souther and the aforementioned songstress Linda Ronstadt.

This Warren Zevon masterpiece has been out of print on vinyl now for over two decades, however, Friday Music

Monkees 50th Anniversary Of Davy Jones' Super Rare 1965 Debut Album

First Time 180 Gram Vinyl With Gatefold Cover

Mastered Impeccably By Joe Reagoso At Friday Music & Capitol Mastering

Featuring What Are We Going To Do & Bob Dylans' It Ain't Me Babe

Only in America can a young lad from Manchester, England break into show business playing The Artful Dodger in Oliver in New York City...winning accolades and a Tony Award nomination from the theater world one day.... and then mastering his craft on The Ed Sullivan Show the same night of The Beatles huge breakthrough, then signing a deal with Colpix Records the same night! A year later, he and three other gents became runaway teen idols on television, topping the charts all over the world as The Monkees, outselling The Beatles for a period and maintaining the coveted number one slot with several hit singles and albums over the next few years ..... Only in America.

This isn't make believe. It is the fabulous rise to fame in a hurry story courtesy of a superstar pop rock legend Davy Jones ..and the massive recording career that started with his long out of print first album David Jones.

Recorded throughout 1965 with a bevy of the hottest songwriters in the Columbia Pictures stable, this pop gem contained the rudiments of a major career which has endured for many years since.

Prior to his untimely death in 2012, Davy proudly noted to Friday Music "Did you know that Dream Girl went to number one in Australia?" Relaying the fact that Philly artist Van McCoy wrote this northern soul sounding track, Jones truly smiled at the U.K. term as this song had the arrangements and feel of r&b bands of the day like The Drifters and The Shirelles. This soulful side of Davy Jones would later show up on The Monkees hits like She Hangs Out, A Man Without A Dream and Forget That Girl.

The album's second single What Are We Going To Do? was a slight departure. It followed more of a Brit pop feel, and it warranted solid chart exposure as well as appearances on national TV shows like Shindig!

The brightest stars of the classic pop era also contributed to this album and would soon follow Davy Jones on his path to Monkeemania. Superstars like Carole King/Gerry Goffin, Barry Mann/Cynthia Weil, David Gates from Bread, Toni Wine who would later sing lead vocals on The Archies records and Bob Dylan with It Ain't Me Babe, which was also a hit for The Turtles that same year.

Friday Music is proud to offer this fine album for the first time in fifty years! This first time 180 gram audiophile vinyl Lp is now mastered impeccably by Joe Reagoso (The Monkees) from the super rare Colpix Records stereo tapes, which truly shows a transition from pop crooner to future rock star.

In 1967, the David Jones l.p. charted thanks to his rise to fame as a member of The Monkees and the album cover was cleverly featured in The Monkees TV show episode, Monkees At The Movies.

    New Moon Daughter (Pure Pleasure)

This is no easy listen ... sparse, complex, often brooding arrangements coupled with Cassandra Wilson's deep, earthy voice and complicated phrasing demand your attention. Waver and you're lost. But ... give this album the listening time & space it deserves and reap the rewards. Unusual, highly atmospheric tracks that combine superb singing and marvellously 'distant' musical backings to weave real magic.

Cassandra Wilson's own excellent, jazz tinged compositions sit alongside a stunning set of ingenious covers from a highly diverse spectrum of composers. Last Train To Clarksville is transformed from a catchy pop song into a stripped-down and genuinely effective jazz vocal work-out. Harvest Moon slows down Neil Young's already wistful ballad to an almost painful level and, in so doing, takes it to an even higher level of gentle reflection. Hank Williams' I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry & U2's Love Is Blindness are transformed into three in the morning jazz club classics.
The vocals and backing to Robert Johnson's 32-20 are simplified to the point where only the essence of the blues is allowed to shine and, Lewis Allan's Strange Fruit becomes as desolate and challenging as it's horrific lyrics.

Clever, very effective and worth the required effort!

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    City Of Refuge

In her relatively short musical career, Abigail Washburn has covered a lot of ground; both physically and metaphorically. Bouncing between China and Appalachia has informed much of her musical output and influenced a body of work that goes far beyond the usual claw hammer banjo repertoire.

Her Rounder debut, City of Refuge is a sublime marriage of old-time and indie-pop. On the album Washburn pairs venerable folk elements with far-flung sounds, and the results feel both strangely familiar and unlike anything anybody's ever heard before. The album features My Morning Jacket's Car Broemel, The Decemberists' Chris Funk, Turtle Island Quartet's Jeremy Kittell, atmospheric jazz guitarist Bill Frisell, veteran Nashville studio percussionist Kenny Malone, Old Crow Medicine Show's Ketch Secor and Morgan Jahnig, Wu Fei, master of the guzheng, and the Mongolian stringband Hanggai, who managed to contribute ambient throat-singing from halfway around the world.

The album was produced by Tucker Martine (The Decemberists, Tift Merritt, Mudhoney) and features the talents of multi-instrumentalist, singer/songwriter, Kai Welch (Tommy and the Whale). City of Refuge offers an expansive palette of supple and modern textures resulting in a remarkably harmonious piece of art.

"A lot of bands like to rehearse in the basement and play as
many gigs as possible before hitting the studio, but The
Lowest Pair had a different approach in mind. For their
debut album 36¢. . . started recording virtually from the get-go, pairing a two-banjo approach with earnest, earthy
    songcraft."

36¢ is The Lowest Pair's debut record recorded
months after Kendl Winter (Olympia Washington)
and Palmer T. Lee (Minnesota) decided to form the
primarily double banjo outt. Recorded and
engineered by Dave Simonett (Trampled by Turtles)
at Suburban Dad Studios, it's the early pickin's,
sweet off the tree, a newly formed endeavor by two
seasoned pros. The duo swap lead vocals
    throughout the album's 11 tracks, combining Kendl's
banjo skills with Palmer's midwestern croon. Prior to
this Kendl has released 3 full length albums under
her name for K Records and Palmer has released
two albums with his band Boys n' the Barrels.
Palmer has also performed with Drew Peterson and
    The Dead Pigeons.

In The Winner's Circle (Pure Pleasure)

Rare stuff from John Coltrane! The album features 'Trane' playing tenor on only 4 of the album's 8 tracks - making it kind of surprising that they used his name in the title - but the album is a lesser-known batch of large group recordings that offer an interesting early chapter in his career! The main force behind the album is arranger Harry Tubbs - possibly not a name that's as sexy as John Coltrane, hence the billing - but a worthy leader for the date, given the quality of the music.

Many of the other players here are small combo heroes who can also shine brightly in bigger groups - such as Donald Byrd and Art Farmer on trumpets, Kenny Burrell on guitar, Al Cohn on baritone sax, Eddie Costa on piano and vibes, and Oscar Pettiford on bass - plus Rolf Kuhn, making an early American appearance on clarinet. Coltrane gets in some nice, but short moments on the date - but the bigger charm is the full ensemble work - on titles that include She Didn't Say Yes, Turtle Walk, At Home With The Blues, Seabreeze, and Love & The Weather.

    Musicians:

    • John Coltrane (tenor saxophone)

    • Donald Byrd, Art Farmer (trumpet)

    • Frank Rehak (trombone)

    • Gene Quill (alto saxophone)

    • Al Cohn (bassoon)

    • Rolf Kuhn (clarinet)

    • Eddie Costa (piano, vib)

    • Freddie Green, Kenny Burrell (guitar)

    • Oscar Pettiford (bass)

    • Philly Joe Jones, Ed Thigpen (drums

Recording: September & October 1957 in New York City
