Live At Third Man Records 10-6-2012

What can we say about The Shins that hasn't already been said in miles of press? They're one of the best bands out there today and we are still honored thinking back to the night James Mercer and his band here to play live and record a live LP for us. This show holds a particularly special place in our hearts, as it was the inaugural groove-carving voyage of our 1953 Scully Lathe that previously churned out masters for Cincinnati's legendary King Records. The 8 tracks on this live recording mark our first ever cut live direct-to-acetate, and we couldn't be more pleased with the way they turned out.

Three very special live records - The Shins, The Kills, and Seasick Steve - all recorded in the Third Man Blue Room last October, and the first three releases recorded live using their one-of-a-kind direct-to-acetate recording process. Without overdubs or editing, these three records were mixed in real time on a Rupert Neve 5008 console by Grammy Award winning engineer Vance Powell, and instantly cut to vinyl by master cutter George Ingram using a 1953 Scully Lathe that previously churned out masters for Cincinnati's legendary King Records (the story goes that James Brown's It's A Man's World was cut on this lathe among many more great sides...)

    Broom

Their debut is an expertly crafted indie pop gem. Spin declared the Missouri band could succeed The Shins. Then a slew of bloggers ranked them ahead of Wilco and Iron & Wine in Leafblower's annual Top Bands Of America Today. Broom sparkles when it rocks, has hooks galore, and should make a lasting impression. Think The Shins, Pavement, Of Montreal, and Elliott Smith. Heartworms

The Shins are pleased to announce the release of their fifth studio album, Heartworms. In contrast to 2012's Port of Morrow, which debuted at #3 on the Billboard Top 200 and was nominated for a Best Alternative Album GRAMMY, Heartworms ushers in a return to the handmade. Heartworms is, as always, entirely written by James Mercer, with exception of So Now What (produced by band member Richard Swift). Heartworms is the first Shins album to be self-produced by Mercer since Oh, Inverted World in 2001.

Heartworms features Mercer's most diverse lyrical palette to date. The result is a cohesive, yet genre defying album marked by Mercer's distinct voice and melodic composition. Unified by his singular vision, Mercer creates a sound that is both familiar a nostalgic nod to the album's predecessors - and distinctly new. The album's first single, Name For You, is a resounding call for female empowerment inspired by Mercer's three daughters.

The Shins are James Mercer (lead vocals, guitar), Joe Plummer (drums, percussion, backing vocals), Yuuki Matthews (bass guitar, keyboards, backing vocals), Mark Watrous (guitar), and Richard Swift (keyboards, piano, organ, synthesizers, percussion, backing vocals).

    Garden State Soundtrack

The soundtrack to Zach Braff's Garden State is nearly as much of a piece with the film as the similarly sweet, quirky combinations of sound and vision in Wes Anderson's films and soundtracks. Garden State, however, is more modern in its outlook and more emotionally direct, with a mixtape earnestness belied by using not one but two songs from the Shins' Oh, Inverted World. New Slang is an obvious choice, as the song just seems to grow in stature as time passes, but Caring Is Creepy, Oh, Inverted World's vulnerable, ever-so-slightly unhinged opening track, is not, and adds to the personal, diary-like feel of the album. The bright poignancy of the Shins' tracks stands out even more among the low-key melancholy of songs like Coldplay's Don't Panic, Remy Zero's Fair, and Colin Hay's I Just Don't Think I'll Ever Get Over You. The inclusion of Hay's track, Bonnie Somerville's Winding Road, and the Cary Brothers' Blue Eyes shows that Garden State doesn't go for the hipster, too-cool-for-school poses that one might expect from the soundtrack of a hot indie movie, even with the inclusion of Iron & Wine's cover of the Postal Service's Such Great Heights. Still, there's something of a collegiate feel to the soundtrack, especially with the re-rediscovery of Nick Drake (One of These Things First) and Simon & Garfunkel (The Only Living Boy in New York) as well as the tentative forays into electronica and trip-hop like Zero 7's In the Waiting Line, Frou Frou's Let Go, and Thievery Corporation's Lebanese Blonde. Perhaps this collegiate feel comes from the fact that those years are often the time when many people are the most ready and willing to explore music that is new to them (but not necessarily new), but, as the success of Garden State's soundtrack shows, any time can be the right time.

    Broken Bells

When James Mercer of the Shins got together with Brian Burton AKA Danger Mouse, the result became more than the sum of its parts. Plans for their collaboration were made since 2004 but first blossomed into their first single "The High Road" in 2009. An album had to follow, so in 2010 Broken Bells was released to great critical and popular acclaim. The duo avoided sounding too much like their own individual styles: Danger Mouse laid off the samples, playing drums, organs and keys himself.

Mercer stretched his vocal cords into falsetto range, at times. Their creative energies gel like no other contemporary collaboration. This addictive record is built to last. We can only hope there's more magic in the works by these modern time geniuses.

about being the great futuristic Space-Knight he'd
always dreamed he'd be as a little kid.

    Charmer

The long awaited new album from Aimee Mann, Charmer, will be released on Superego Records. Influenced by what Mann calls the super pop of the 70s and 80s, the album is her first release since 2008's celebrated @#%&*! Smilers. Of Charmer, her eighth studio album, Mann comments, I'm fascinated by charming people and the whole idea of charm. It's hard to remember sometimes that there is usually an agenda behind the act of being charming, and that is what I'm most interested in. Is someone's charm being utilized just to try and entertain people, make them feel special and interesting, or is there a more sinister purpose behind it? Sometimes I think 'charm' can just be another word for 'manipulation.' The album also includes a duet with James Mercer of The Shins on Living a Lie. Mann will support the new album with tour dates this fall.

    After The Disco

When Shins frontman James Mercer teamed up with producer Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse for a track on the pair's Dark Night Of The Soul project, it seemed farfetched to assume that we'd see any further collaboration from its members, especially following Sparklehorse frontman Mark Linkous' suicide shortly thereafter. But to our delight and surprise, the surviving duo went on to form Broken Bells in 2009, and since then have delivered an album and an EP to the world before fading back into the night. Danger Mouse (real name Brian Burton) has stayed busy in the meantime, producing albums for Portugal. The Man, The Black Keys, and U2, while Mercer poured his focus into a new Shins album and subsequent tour cycle. But now that all those side projects are behind the iconic artists, the duo is ready to give the world another welcomed surprise - their sophomore LP, After The Disco. And if that album title isn't enough of an indicator of the group's surprising new direction, the Bee Gees-esque backing vocals are certainly telling.

When You Land Here, It's Time to Return (2014 Version)

    2014 Remix/Remaster

James Mercer (The Shins, Broken Bells) formed Flake Music in
Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1992 with Neal Langford on guitar, Phil
Higgs and then Marty Crandall on bass and Jesse Sandoval on drums.
Flake Music was a collaborative affair with each member contributing
to the songwriting process. From 1992 to 1997, Flake Music released
several singles before releasing When You Land Here, It's Time to Return
in 1997. Upon the album's release, Flake Music began touring largely
due to support from Modest Mouse.

In 1996, Mercer started The Shins as an additional outlet for his
songwriting, eventually releasing The Shins' acclaimed debut Oh, Inverted
World was released in 2001 on Sub Pop.

Flake Music's When You Land Here, It's Time to Return was originally
released on Northern California label Omnibus Records. This reissue
includes the full original album, remixed by Kennie Takahashi and
remastered by J.J. Golden at Golden Mastering, and a reinterpretation
    of the album art.

Neon Bible is the second album by Canadian indie rock band Arcade Fire, released in March 2007 on Merge Records. The majority of the album was recorded in a church that the band bought and renovated. Neon Bible became Arcade Fire's highest charting album at the time, debuting on the Billboard 200 at number two, selling 92,000 copies in its first week and more than 400,000 to date. Being released within a month of similarly successful releases by The Shins (Wincing the Night Away) and Modest Mouse (We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank), Neon Bible was cited as an example of the popularization of indie rock.

Built In Sun is a new project from Joe Plummer, drummer for The Shins, Cold War Kids
and Mister Heavenly. Joe has also produced and co-recorded an all drum project
called Hew Time (with Dale Crover and Coady Willis from The Melvins), released on
Joyful Noise in 2014. Joe has also toured and recorded with Modest Mouse and The
Black Heart Procession drums and percussion over the course of the last 10 years.
Built In Sun started during touring breaks between The Shins "Port of Morrow" and
Cold War Kids "Hold My Home" releases. Built in Sun began as an instrumental idea,
with inspirations landing somewhere between John Cales "Fear", the punk vibe of the
Wipers and John Reis, and his favorite soundtrackists John Brion and Clint Mansell.
After the first instrumental mixes were finished (with the help of Richard Swift) he
decided that the tunes and melodies just might be cool enough to ask a few of his pals
to sing. Pall Jenkins (The Black Heart Procession) was the first. Within a day Pall sent
back John John, with solid scratch vocals. Another song came the next day, with new
ones following almost each day afterward .There was no use to ask anyone else.
The songs really came together with the addition of Pall's vocals and it felt great to
collaborate with him again. With this, Built In Sun was complete

Seattle's five piece band, Fleet Foxes traffic in baroque harmonic pop on this, their self titled full length debut. They draw influences from the traditions of folk, pop, choral, gospel, sacred harp singing, West Coast music, traditional music from Ireland to Japan, film scores and their peers from the Northwest. The subject matter ranges from the natural world and familial bonds to bygone loves and stone cold graves. Fleet Foxes is a supremely crafted and confident affair produced by the famous Phil Ek (Modest Mouse, The Shins).

Their line up for Mars Loves Venus featured the dual vocals and multi-instrumental skills of Johathan Bree and Heather Mansfield, James Milne (Laurence Arabia) on guitar (among other instruments) and Ruby Suns front-man Ryan McPhun on drums and backing vocals. Now, finally on vinyl, the first 250 copies of Mars Loves Venus will be issued on a custom-blended split-color vinyl.

Mars Loves Venus is a super quirky, super cute and oddly sensual record. If you're a fan you know what we're talking about. If you're not, think She & Him, Mates Of State or even Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood.

Live At Third Man Records 10-26-2012

The dog Hisself joined us at Third Man for a rare Stateside live appearance on October 26th, 2012. Nobody, but nobody, rocks a Diddley Bow like Seasick Steve, and we captured the every nuance in this direct-to-acetate recording. No edits. No overdubs. Just Seasick Steve in all his glory that fateful night in October.

    Apocalipstick

Society would deem that a prodigious girl can't be in a progressive rock band while also being in complete control of its creative vision, business plan and social messaging. Society is wrong. Clem Creevy, a 19-year-old teen Queen dreamed up Cherry Glazerr in her LA bedroom alone and is perhaps more capable of figuring a music career out than anyone who attempts this treacherous life path.

Back in 2014, much-loved Cali imprint Burger Records released their intoxicating debut Haxel Princess and Suicide Squeeze released the Had Ten Dollaz 7-inch.

On Apocalipstick, the band worked with "rock'n'roll wizard" Joe Chicarelli [White Stripes, The Shins, The Strokes] and Carlos de la Garza [Bleached, M83, Tegan and Sara]. With their help and the band's newfound self-discipline and motivation, Cherry Glazerr has evolved into a wildly complex, hugely guitar heavy, and unapologetically loud machine.
