Howlin' Wolf (Chester Burnett) will always be known as one of the founding fathers of modern day blues. His
legendary style of playing guitar, his unique vocal and stage prowess and of course his stellar list of classic Chicago
style blues tunes have all gone on to influence generations upon generations of rock and blues performers worldwide.

With almost six decades in the music business, this Mississippi native began his career cutting early sides for
Sun before landing in Chicago in the early fifties, where he began a long climb to the top of the blues world on the
    Chess label.

In 1962, he released his stellar self-titled masterpiece Howlin' Wolf. Featuring an all-star band with the likes of
the legendary Jimmy Rogers and Buddy Guy on guitar, the masterful Otis Spann on piano, and Willie Dixon on bass,
Howlin' Wolf a/k/a The Rockin' Chair Album would go on to become one of the most revered albums in modern day
    Chicago blues history.

Kicking things off with one of his finest smash hits Shake for Me, The Wolf continues to rock the listener through
a treasure trove of 11 more blues standards which made this one of the most important blues LP's of all time. The
album features classic gems like Spoonful, Back Door Man, Wang Dang Doodle and The Red Rooster. All of these
blues rockers became truly a blueprint for a ton of rock and blues giants for years like Cream, The Doors and The
    Rolling Stones.

Friday Music is no stranger to the music of the legendary Chess Records arsenal of fine recordings. That is why
we are so very proud to announce our first installment in The Howlin' Wolf/Friday Music 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl

    Science From An Easy Chair

Florida's HAVE GUN, WILL TRAVEL have a natural instinct for combining folk, pop, punk, rock and classic country influences to create a sound all their own. "Their music has a great energy to it with infectious, sing-along choruses and refrains" remarked NPR's Robin Hilton. American Songwriter called HGWT's music "organic, infectious Americana Pop. Their music has a refreshing immediacy to it."

Over the course of four acclaimed albums, hundreds of shows and copious populist-radio airplay, they've nurtured a tradition of inviting all manner of gifted musicians to join the fray. The group's inclusive nature allows it to flesh out tunes that run the gamut from foot-stomping front-porch spirituals and evocative Texas swing to strum-punk rave-ups, hill-country historicals and more.

HGWT's music has been featured in a national Chevy TV commercial; multiple episodes of the PBS series Roadtrip Nation; and an episode of CBS's The Good Wife. Their albums have spent months on the CMJ Radio Top 200 chart. And their live performances have been described as rousing, rollicking, energetic and dynamic.

The band's highly anticipated, fifth album "Science from an Easy Chair" is slated for a spring release on THIS IS AMERICAN MUSIC. This full-length concept album is based entirely on British explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton and his 1914 Antarctic expedition. The release commemorates the 100th anniversary of the epic journey.

Susan Cowsill and Vicki Peterson have been playing music apart and together for their entire lives. Susan was a child star with her family band, who were the real life template for The Partridge Family. Vicki of course is known as a member of The Bangles.

The two first performed as The Psycho Sisters in the early years of the last decade of the previous century. At that time, both were members, along with Peter Holsapple, of the much loved band The Continental Drifters.

After many years of friendship, the two decided to make a proper album. Up On the Chair, Beatrice features ten tunes of harmony, hooks and just a touch of New Orleans Hoodoo. Along with 8 original tunes, the album features their versions Peter Holsapple's What Do You Want From Me and Harry Nilsson's Cuddly Toy.

    Birds Of A Feather

After stints as drummer for both the Byrds and the Flying Burrito Brothers and a few solo albums, Gene Parsons teamed up with his wife, singer/guitarist Meridian Green, the daughter of folksinger Bob Gibson, to form Parsons Green in 1986. The duo released this, their Sierra label debut and lone studio album Birds Of A Feather in 1988. The harmony rich affair finds Parsons in the producer chair and on vocals, guitar, pedal steel, banjo, harmonica and drums while Green appears here on vocals and guitar. The 11-song set is highlighted by the folk rock arrangement of Donovan's Catch The Wind and Parsons and Gib Guilbeau's plaintive country lament Wind & Rain.

    Salvation Town

    Limited Audiophile Pressing by RTI

    Deluxe Gatefold Package

Salvation Town, the surprising and powerful solo debut by Jonny Two Bags,
guitarist for the Southern California punk rock institution Social Distortion,
defies expectations at every turn. Produced by David Kalish, noted for his long
association with Rickie Lee Jones, at his Redstar Studio in Los Angeles, the
album features 10 striking original songs written by Jonny Two Bags, a.k.a.
    Jonny Wickersham.

A diverse array of talent that spans the musical spectrum
was enlisted for the recording. Jackson Browne shares vocals with Wickersham
on "Then You Stand Alone," while David Lindley, whose guitar work graced
several of Browne's classic '70s albums, contributes to four tracks. Los Lobos'
multi-instrumentalist David Hidalgo and his sons David Jr. and Vincent join in
on "Wayward Cain" and super-sideman Greg Leisz (Lucinda Williams, Eric
Clapton, k.d. lang, Dave Alvin) also appears on guitar. The drum chair is filled
by Pete Thomas, a mainstay of Elvis Costello's bands. Wickersham's colleagues in Social Distortion, keyboardist Danny McGough
and bassist Brent Harding, join on a few tracks while Austin accordion luminary Joel Guzman and bassist/punk kingpin Zander
Schloss (Weirdos, Circle Jerks, Thelonious Monster) round out the lineup.

As is tradition, writing sessions for the album saw Biffy Clyro - Simon Neil (vocals/guitar) and the Johnstonbrothers James (bass) and Ben (drums) working in the intimate environment of their practice room. They then headed to Los Angeles for recording sessions with producer Rich Costey (Muse, My Chemical Romance, SigurRos). Citing influences as diverse as Tears For Fears' Songs From The Big Chair album, DJ Arca and Deafheaven,Simon Neil has described Ellipsis as more of a punch to the nose than a big cuddle.

Lyrically, the album's songstackle personal issues with the idea of fighting back a recurring theme. Such themes are also apparent in the album's visceral first single Wolves of Winter which captures BiffyClyro's famous blend of angular riffs, pummelling rhythms and strident hooks. Says Neil: 'Wolves of Winter' isabout us being wolves on a patch and if you come onto that patch, we'll tear you limb-from-limb.

An Ellipsis (most commonly depicted as ...) indicates a continuation: in this case, Biffy Clyro's new body of workis an ongoing representation of everything that the band have stood for since first debuting in 2002 with theBlackened Sky album.

    Ride The Lightning

Ride the Lightning is the second studio album by American heavy metal band Metallica. The album was recorded in three weeks with producer Flemming Rasmussen at the Sweet Silence Studios in Copenhagen, Denmark. The artwork, based on the band's concept, represents an electric chair in the midst of a thunderstorm. The album title was taken from a passage in Stephen King's novel The Stand. Whilst still rooted in the thrash metal genre, the album showcased the band's musical maturity and lyrical sophistication. This was partially because bassist Cliff Burton introduced the basics of music theory to the rest of the band and because he had more input in the songwriting. It was the last album to feature songwriting contribution from former lead guitarist Dave Mustaine.

Ride the Lightning received positive response from music critics, who saw it as a more ambitious effort than its predecessor. Metallica promoted the album on the Bang That Head That Doesn't Bang European tour in late 1984, and on its North American leg in the first half of 1985. The band performed at a few major music festivals, such as Monsters of Rock and Day on the Green later that year. Two months after its release, Elektra Records signed Metallica to a multi-year contract and reissued the album. Ride the Lightning peaked at number 100 on the Billboard 200 with no radio exposure. Although 75,000 copies were initially pressed for the American market, the album sold half a million by November 1987. It was certified 6× platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in 2012 for shipping six million copies in the United States. Many rock publications have ranked Ride the Lightning on their best album lists, saying it had a lasting impact on the genre.

    Travels

If you've ever desired a Pat Metheny Group greatest hits album, then Travels is for you. Compiled from the group's touring activities in 1982, this double set is a must-have. From the glittering lotus of melody that is "San Lorenzo" to the even more effusive "Phase Dance," the requisite classics are all here. We also get a curtailed, though no less epic, version of "As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls," which here draws out like a long cinematic fade and throws the windows open wide to the band's boggling sonic purview. And one can hardly help but swoon from the dizzying heights reached by this live version of "Are You Going With Me?" Here the studio version seems but a memory on the path to glory, and finds exuberant life in what is perhaps Metheny's best solo on record. An absolute affirmation.

Yet the album's true value comes in the handful of songs exclusive to it. Through these we encounter softer sides of the PMG, each burnished like a different shade of leather. "The Fields, The Sky" is an outstanding place to start. Vasconcelos's unmistakable berimbau threads a supremely melodious backdrop, while Metheny is at once distant and nearby, winding a slow and organic retrograde around the fiery center within. Vasconcelos is also the voice of "Goodbye," a forlorn piece of sonic stationery across which Metheny inscribes a most heartbreaking letter toward a ripple of an ending. This pairs nicely with the title track, a laid-back photograph of Americana that is like a rocking chair on the back porch: lulling, and affording an unobstructed vista.

Similar strains await us in "Farmer's Trust," a slow plunge into an ocean of undriven roads gilded by the whispering of baby birds and the rustling of the leaves that hide them, and in the smoothly paved blacktops of the synth-driven "Extradition" and "Song for Bilbao." Each of these creeps along like wispy clouds over badlands, spun by keyboardist Lyle Mays into sunset. But it isn't all drawl, as drummer Dan Gottlieb proves in the invigorating "Straight On Red," throughout which he provides the perfect springboard for the masterful dialogues of Metheny and Mays.

Travels is what the PMG are all about, and this album shows us the collective at its finest hour. Those hearing the PMG for the first time will want to start with the studio sessions, and especially Offramp, from which Travels was in part drawn. That way, one can appreciate the enthusiasm of the crowds, and get at least a taste of what it must have felt like to be there among them. With a depth and cleanliness of sound that no band can match, the PMG were a force to be reckoned with, but also one so welcoming that reckoning need never have applied. Theirs is a space where nature and nurture shared the same pair of lungs. - Tyran Grillo

    Surrounded

In the time since Our Blood was released and after a few long tours, Richard Buckner attempted to work on writing short stories but found himself drawn back into the music room. The evidence of his time in
the writer's chair is clear in the dense, lovely prose of Surrounded. The album's liner notes include text-embedded lyrics, a technique Buckner
employed on his earlier albums Since and Impasse, but this marks the first time he used the songs' extended story to construct the album's overall
    view and track sequence.

Throwing out the "tricks and trades" of his previous efforts, Buckner hunkered down at home and chose a few unfamiliar pieces of gear-a Suzuki QChord electronic autoharp and an Electro-Harmonix POG2
pedal-to create basic tracks and open up more sonic possibilities. "The best outcomes happen sometimes when I'm unfamiliar with the tool that I'm using (imagine MacGyver wearing a dog cone)."

The now-infamous process of recording and re-recording Our Blood left him a bit gun-shy, so this time, Buckner decided to get each song out of his house as soon as it was finished to avoid the contamination of overthinking. After hearing an interview with famed producer Tucker Martine, Buckner found a destination for his songs: "Tucker understood the urgency in me to tie the whole thing up before I fell into the same trap that I'd had finishing Our Blood and was generous enough to move other commitments around to fit Surrounded in. When I had finally finished Our Blood, I felt like I'd just survived a stroll through a mine field. With
Surrounded, it was more of a sensation that I'd successfully organized a messy desk."

    The Bright Mississippi

Through his work as producer, composer, arranger and consummate session man, New Orleans native Allen Toussaint has truly earned living-legend status. He has collaborated on landmark recordings for such artists as Ernie K. Doe, Lee Dorsey, Dr. John, the Meters, the Pointer Sisters and Labelle and released acclaimed albums of his own. The 70 year-old pianist, already a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee, was the recipient, on the recent Grammy Awards telecast, of the Recording Academy's prestigious Trustee Award, honoring a lifetime in the studio, both behind the scenes and in front of the mic.

On The Bright Mississippi, his Nonesuch debut, Toussaint continues to break new ground with his first jazz-oriented set, displaying the same effortless swing and relaxed charm he brought to his classic rock and roll sides. He salutes Big Easy stars of a previous generation, the jazz greats who, in the early 20th century, built the genre from the ground up and turned the ears of the world to New Orleans. Backed by an all-star combo that sounds like a group of old friends, Toussaint reinterprets classic jazz and blues tunes popularized or written by such New Orleans greats as Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, Jelly Roll Morton and Joe King Oliver, as well as pieces composed by fellow travelers Django Reinhardt, Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk. He accedes the producers chair to trusted friend Joe Henry, who sat behind the board for Toussaint's contributions to Our New Orleans, Nonesuch Records best-selling 2005 benefit release aiding hurricane victims on the Gulf Coast. Henry also produced The River In Reverse, Toussaint's 2006 post-Katrina collaboration with Elvis Costello.

Henry assembled a decidedly non-traditional band of backing players for The Bright Mississippi, assuring a fresh take on such venerable tunes as West End Blues, St. James Infirmary, and Dear Old Southland. Joining Toussaint for four days of sessions at Manhattans Avatar Studio were guitarist Marc Ribot (Costello, Tom Waits), bassist David Piltch (k.d. lang), clarinetist Don Byron, trumpeter Nicholas Payton and drummer Jay Bellerose (Robert Plant /Alison Krauss, Sam Phillips). Nonesuch label-mates Brad Mehldau (piano) and Joshua Redman (saxophone) stopped by for one tune each.It was wonderful, says Toussaint of these convivial sessions.

Everything is live, of course. This isn't the kind of assembly line music where somebody put the wheels on here and somebody put the top on there. Everything got done at the same time, so everybody fed on each other, their personality and tonality.

    Hymn To The Immortal Wind

Just in time for their 10-year anniversary, Mono return with their fifth studio album, the absolutely massive Hymn To The Immortal Wind.

After touring almost non-stop for five years, the band hibernated for over a year to focus solely on writing Hymn. The result is their most thoughtful and eclectic album to date. Written and arranged with a hopeful, romantic narrative in mind, the songs string together like chapters in an epic love story. The music is naturally majestic, with Monos trademark wall of noise crashing beautifully against the largest chamber orchestra the band has ever enlisted. The instrumentation is vast, incorporating strings, flutes, organ, piano, glockenspiel and tympani into their standard face-melting set-up.

Recorded to analog tape with long-time friend and producer Steve Albini, there is an intimacy captured here that is at once beautiful and a little terrifying. The creaking of old wooden chairs as the orchestra rocks in their seats (both literally and figuratively), puckered lips rolling along flutes, and even the conductors opening cue can be heard during the hauntingly quiet sections.

While Hymn continues to mine the cinematic drama inherent in all of Monos music, the dynamic shifts now come more from dark-to-light instead of quiet-to-loud. The maturity to balance these elements masterfully has become Monos strongest virtue.

    London Calling

Ranked 8/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Recorded in 1979 in London, which was then wrenched by surging unemployment and drug addiction, and released in America in January 1980, the dawn of an uncertain decade, London Calling is 19 songs of apocalypse, fueled by an unbending faith in rock & roll to beat back the darkness. Produced with no-surrender energy by legendary Seventies studio madman Guy Stevens, the Clash's third album skids from bleak punk (London Calling) to rampaging ska (Wrong 'Em Boyo) and disco resignation (Lost in the Supermarket).

The album was made in dire straits too. The band was heavily in debt and openly at war with its record company. Singer-guitarists Joe Strummer and Mick Jones wrote together in Jones' grandmother's flat. Joe, once he learned how to type, would bang the lyrics out, Jones said. Then I'd be able to bang out some music while he was hitting the typewriter. Strummer, Jones, bassist Paul Simonon and drummer Topper Headon spent nearly three months rehearsing and demoing songs in a garage in the Pimlico section of London - with one light and filthy carpet on the walls for soundproofing, recalled Strummer in 1989. We felt that we were struggling, he said, about to slide down a slope or something, grasping with our fingernails. But Stevens was on hand for inspiration. He threw chairs around the room if he thought a track needed zapping up, according to Strummer. The album ends with Train in Vain, a rousing song of fidelity (unlisted on the back cover because it was added at the last minute) that became the sound of triumph: the Clash's first Top 30 single in the U.S. - Rolling Stone

    Change Becomes Us

Only Wire would attempt to make their fourth album after their tenth. At the beginning of their career, between 1977 and 1979, the great British art punk quartet released three perfect albums, Pink Flag, Chairs Missing and 154, each wildly different from the other. Then they splintered, though a bunch of post-154 songs-in-process came to light later, in the dodgy live recordings that made up the bizarre, messy Document and Eyewitness (1981) and 1996's Turns and Strokes.

Since they first reunited in 1985, Wire has had an exceptionally weird relationship to its own past. During their commercial peak in the latter half of the 80s, they refused to play anything from the pre-breakup era, and for the first few years of their current incarnation, they mostly acted as if they'd jumped straight from Pink Flag to the year 2000. At the beginning of this decade, they started looking back in earnest-- not in a hey, kids, we wrote 12 x U, remember? way, but in a cleaning up loose ends way. 2011's Strays EP contained four pieces that had been kicking around their live repertoire for a long time but had never been recorded to their satisfaction before; the Black Session album that came out last year actually included a few relatively faithful versions of old songs.

And now they've gone back to the material they'd have recorded for the album that never happened after 154. The 13 titles on Change Becomes Us are new, but the songs themselves aren't; they're all more or less newly rewritten versions of the Document and Eyewitness/Turns and Strokes repertoire. It's not the first time they've reckoned with some of those sketches, either. B/W Silence and Time Lock Fog are respectively adapted from Lorries and 5/10, which singer/guitarist Colin Newman previously reworked on his 1982 solo album Not To. Doubles & Trebles is a new version of Ally in Exile, which Wire mutated first into Art of Persistence on 2000's The Third Day and then into I Don't Understand on 2002's Read & Burn 01; positioned as the new album's opener, its arrangement and lyric (about a solitary agent in enemy territory) explicitly allude to the way Reuters introduces Pink Flag.

The Wire of 1980, and the band's members on the solo records that immediately followed the split, were radicals who were trying to pry open the pop-recording form and avoid repeating themselves. The Wire of 2013 have settled on a sweet-and-prickly sound that suits them, and sonically Change Becomes Us is of a piece with Red Barked Tree and Object 47, the other studio albums they've recorded since the 2004 departure of guitarist/texturalist Bruce Gilbert. (These days, his spot is filled by Matt Simms, who's 30 years younger than the rest of the band.)

Considered as a set of songs, though, it's fantastic-- a clear look at the twisty, glittering material that had previously only been a few sparkles of possibility shining through the muck of those difficult live albums. The band who wrote these songs were a couple of years away from becoming hardcore punk icons-- there are hints of that when drummer Robert Grey breaks into a high-speed two-step on Adore Your Island and Stealth of a Stork. And they were so deeply invested in non-obviousness that their lyrics sometimes read like cryptic crossword clues: the hook of Eels Sang Lino-- recast here as Eels Sang-- is an anagram for in Los Angeles.

But the Wire of 1979 and 1980 were also developing their enduring fascination with unlikely kinds of beauty, and their 21st century incarnation has built some of their most fetching songs from some of the most ragged and jagged ideas to come from their younger selves. (Re-Invent Your Second Wheel, sung by bassist Graham Lewis, is a languorous waltz whose DNA has traces of the in-your-face Document and Eyewitness experiment Zegk Hoqp.) History and transformation are, understandably, recurring themes in the new lyrics on Change Becomes Us, and it's a treat to have this missing link in the Wire story repaired, even if it's as much an anomaly in the present moment as Document and Eyewitness was in its time.

    The Masterplan

Following a British rock tradition initiated by the Beatles and lovingly inherited by the Jam and the Clash, Oasis is the only band of the era to offer fans extra tracks on their singles that are often as good as, if not better than, the hits. Rather than saving his new songs for the next full album, Noel Gallagher prefers immediacy. Thus, this compilation of those various B-Sides works just great as a listening experience, offering metallic rushes (Acquiesce, The Swamp Song) and absolute melodic beauty (Talk Tonight, the marvelous Rockin' Chair), while conjuring up the ghosts of Mott the Hoople, T. Rex, the Fab Four, and Slade. -Bill Holdship

    True Hallucinations

Formed in 2011 by Brian Harding (ex-Hymns) and Amalie Bruun (ex-Minks), the duo self-released a short-run, homespun CD-EP of hazy, lo-fi recordings featuring Harding's opaque bedroom-pop songwriting juxtaposed with the duo's sun-kissed harmonies. Two of the tracks, You Are a Lion, I Am a Lamb b/w The Millionaire, were soon released to the world on vinyl as the premiere release from Other Music Recording Co. and the pair continued to write new songs while simultaneously playing more live shows, now working as a proper five-piece rock band with the addition of good friends Kai Kennedy, Leif Huckman and Sam Bair.

Keeping a handful of Ex Cops' early sessions in place, the newly expanded lineup took to the studio to record True Hallucinations with John Siket (Blonde Redhead, Yo La Tengo, Sonic Youth, etc.) sitting in the production chair. The resulting album is a mind-altering pop pill that maintains the intimate mood of the original group's sound, but now presented in widescreen Technicolor.

Ranked 226/500 On Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time

Mastered By Bob Ludwig Working Under The Supervision Of Springsteen & Engineer Toby Scott

Sparsely-recorded on a cassette-tape Portastudio, the tracks on Nebraska were originally intended as demos of songs to be recorded with the E Street Band. However, Springsteen ultimately decided to release the demos himself. Nebraska remains one of the most highly regarded albums in his catalogue. The songs on Nebraska both deal with ordinary, blue collar characters who face a challenge or a turning point in their lives, but also outsiders, criminals and mass murderers, who have little hope for the future - or no future at all, as in the title track, where the main character is sentenced to death in the electric chair. Unlike his previous albums, very little salvation and grace is present within the songs. The album's uncompromising sound and mood, combined with its dark lyrical content has been described by a music critic as one of the most challenging albums ever released by a major star on a major record label.

Wild child is an eclectic, six-piece band fueled by the songwriting chemistry
between co-founders Kelsey Wilson and Alexander Beggins. The band rose
up out of the Austin music scene with their self-release debut, Pillow Talk
(2010). Since then, Wild Child has made waves by scoring three #1's on
Hype Machine, and has earned a reputation for having explosive live shows
all without the use of electric guitars, or any guitar for that matter. Off the
heels of winning two Austin Music Awards, Wild Child reemerge in 2013
with a sparkly new album entitled The Runaround, plus a record deal

with the Austin boutique label, The Noise Company.
    For the making of The
Runaround, Wild Child enlisted indie rock nobleman, Ben Kweller, to sit
in the Producer's chair. Kweller was instrumental in harnessing the band's
youthful energy and combining it with their natural sense of nostalgia. All of
this makes for a timeless set that slams you in the arm with a pop injection
one minute and caresses your heart the next. The Runaround sees six
friends swagger happily through life, swaying to drunken horns and whistling
addictive hooks in your face. Together they march along to crisp, insistent
beats - hearts broken and chins up. Wild Child have proven they are a band
of uncommon character, placing art above all. It's nice to finally see a band
like this gain the adoration of a fan base growing faster than the click of a

    Jimmy Reed At Carnegie Hall

Jimmy Reed at Carnegie Hall was the first blues album to truly cross over and influence a whole generation and continues to spread its influence today. Everyone from Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, The Yardbirds and countless others, were influenced by Jimmy Reed at Carnegie Hall. This album includes all of his greatest hits. Jimmy not only had hits on the R&B charts but also crossed over 11 times on Billboards Hot 100, unheard of for a blues musician. This is not a live recording. Rather, Jimmy Reed recorded in Carnegie Hall the same set list he had performed there just a night or two previously.

Mastered at AcousTech by Kevin Gray and Steve Hoffman.

Analogue Productions' cleanly pressed 45rpm version of Reed's most famous release is not the first audiophile edition. Mobile Fidelity released a fine-sounding gold disc in the '90s, and Audio Fidelity recently transferred it onto SACD. But there's magic lurking within these grooves that digital has never fully reproduced; the album has never sounded better. Reed's lazy rhythmic sway, loose-limbed strumming, and unmannered singing fill the soundstage...Guitar timbres teem with purity, and there's ample separation between Reed's elementary harmonica solos and Earl Phillips' rocking-chair percussion. While the album has never been a dynamic standout, it's hard to imagine a future incarnation getting more from the music. - Bob Gendron, The Absolute Sound, April/May 2005

The United States' myriad inequalities, hatreds and phobias are painfully evident in 2017, offering proof that the age-old dichotomy of political bands versus apolitical bands simply doesn't exist. Either you are comfortable and unfazed by the current reigning power structures, or you use your music as a vehicle for the dismantling of oppression and the creation of something better. No matter what your songs are about, you are choosing a side.

The position of Providence, RI's Downtown Boys has been clear since they started storming through basements and DIY spaces with their radically-minded rock music: they are here to topple the white-cis-het hegemony and draft a new history. Downtown Boys began by combining revolutionary ideals with boundless energy and contagious, inclusive fun, and their resolve has only strengthened as their sound and audience have grown.

Cost of Living is their third full-length, following a self-released 2012 debut and 2015's Full Communism on Don Giovanni Records. They recorded it with Guy Picciotto (Fugazi; producer of Blonde Redhead, The Gossip), one of indie-rock's most mythological figures, in the producer's chair. Picciotto fostered the band's improvisational urges while pulling the root of their music to the forefront: unflinching choruses, fearlessly confrontational vocals, and the sense that each song will incite the room into action, sending bodies into motion that were previously thought to have atrophied.

Downtown Boys are keenly aware of the increased visibility and credibility that comes with signing to a corporate-media conglomerate such as Sub Pop. They're using this platform as a megaphone for their protest music, amplifying and centering Chicana, queer, and Latino voices in the far-too-whitewashed world of rock. In just one example, album-opener A Wall rides the feel-good power that drove so many tunes by The Clash and Wire as it calls out the idea that a wall could ever succeed in snuffing the humanity and spirit of those it's designed to crush.

Compared to previous efforts, Downtown Boys have shifted from a once-meaty brass section to the subtler melodic accompaniment of keyboards and a saxophone, coloring their anthems with warm, bright tones while singer/lyricist Victoria Ruiz spits out her frustrations and passions. Some might say it shows a sense of maturity, as Downtown Boys have undoubtedly smoothed down some of their earlier edges, but there is no compromise to their righteous assault and captivating presence. Like the socially conscious groups of years past, from Public Enemy to Rage Against the Machine, Downtown Boys harness powerful sloganeering, repetitive grooves, and earworm hooks to create one of the most necessary musical statements of the day. We should all do well to take notice!
