    Third Reich 'n Roll

The Residents released of their third album, The Third Reich 'n' Roll in 1976. People have speculated whether The Residents were hinting that Rock 'n' Roll has brain-washed the youth of the world. When confronted with this possibility, they replied, Well, it may be true or it may not, but we just wanted to kick out the jams and get it on. The Third Reich 'n' Roll consists of two suites, Swastikas on Parade and Hitler was a Vegetarian. Both are semi-phonetic interpretations of top forty hits from the sixties. Our roots, say The Residents, a bright orange carrot clutched lovingly in their hands. Remastered for vinyl!

Musically, it's difficult to describe this diverse album. There is a silky, seductive, and murky aspect which creates a supporting liquid background upon which the lyrics float. There is a balance between the music and the lyrics. They never step on each other as they take turns moving in and out of the foreground. The lyrics play a very dominant role on this album. They are like rhyming instruments that project pictures before our eyes. A style emerges in the imagery and in the lyric rhythm. The Residents use words for the sake of their sounds, and for how they feel when leaving the tongue.

Gomez returns with their adventurous, stunning and ambitious seventh full-length Whatever's On Your Mind. Deep in the woods of Virginia, Gomez have conspired to make the most compelling, direct album of their 15 year career. The members reside across two continents (in Los Angeles, Brooklyn and Brighton, England) and after several months of sharing ideas through every facet of technology available to them, they came together with their longtime friend, Sam Farrar (Phantom Planet) to create their first self-produced offering since 2001's In Our Gun.

    Eskimo (Discontinued) (On Sale)

Whether the masterminds of the avant garde soundscape band (if that is the correct term) The Residents have camped out on the Northpole in order to find inspiration for Eskimo (1979), we will never know. What we do know is that putting Eskimo on the record player is like a mini trip to cold, windy and mysterious surroundings. The album's title is aptly chosen: when hearing the tribal drumming, chanting and cold splashes of arctic life, it makes you actually believe you're looking over the shoulder of the Inuit people. The band's members are shrouded in obscurity. They could be from outer space for that matter. Maybe this thought helps putting The Residents and their music in perspective. We do know they were founded in the late sixties, after which The Residents continued to turn heads with their ability to stay out of musical confinements. Each and every one of their records that have been released from their debut Meet The Residents in 1974 until present (which add up to more than 60 (!) albums), is a groundbreaking effort in itself. No different for Eskimo, a highly desirable record that is an excellent starting point to discovering the ways of The Residents. Don't forget to put on your furry winter coat.

    Coochie Brake

A million years ago, a big rock fell out of the sky and landed right in the middle of Louisiana. Well, it wasn't Louisiana at that time. But that rock fell, and it hit hard making a giant dent. It gradually filled in but no matter what, it still left a dent. And that dent held just enough water that it became a primeval swamp known as Coochie Brake. Some young guys used to camp in Coochie Brake. They climbed the massive granite boulders that common sense said should not be there. They explored the caves. They sat still and let the Brake speak to them as only the Brake can. Those teens grew up to become The Residents.

    Eskimo

The Residents had passed their own punk stage in 1976 with the release of Satisfaction and were feeling that 1979 disco, while using the studio in new ways, did not actually offer much in the way of depth. So they decided it was a good time to make the jump into world music, since by their own calculations it was not to become popular for several more years. They scanned the map for a proper culture to exploit. Immediately they realized the North Pole had been overlooked because it is made of ice and therefore not on a world map.

The Kissaway Trail list the likes of Sonic Youth, Grandaddy, Daniel Johnston, Pixies and The Beach Boys as being their main influences, though in their native Denmark, where they have recently taken off massively due to their incendiary live shows, the band have quickly developed a unique sound of their own. Their debut was followed by Sleep Mountain, released in 2011 on Bella Union. Breach is the band's Yep Roc Records debut and features the single Nørrebro, an ode to the part of Copenhagen, where the band resides.

    Not Available

While there are a million stories about The Residents, one of the more intriguing concerns the recording of their second LP, Not Available. Early in the career of the band, the theory of obscurity was introduced to them by the German avant-guardist, N. Senada. The plan called for the creation of complete projects that were literally not intended to be heard by anyone other than its creators. The Residents realized the truth in this ideal: that music really was difficult to record without considering the audience. They thought the experience gained by completing such a project would prove worthwhile toward achieving an independent attitude toward music. Not Available was completed in 1974 and stored. Several years later, in 1978, The Residents were severely over schedule on their opus, Eskimo. The record company pulled Not Available from the masters room and released it. Surprisingly, The Residents were not upset by this fact since it in no way violated their original intent.

    I Giorni

The inspiration for Ludovico Einaudi's I Giorni was a 12th-century folk song from Mali about a hippopotamus who was cherished by the residents of a nearby village but killed by a hunter. The song, writes Einaudi in his succinct liner note, is sung as a lament for the death of a king or a great person or for the loss of a loved one. The result is a tender & introspective set of fourteen piano pieces. This work was written after hearing the kora playing of Toumani Diabate whilst traveling in Mali. Originally released in 2008, I Giorni is available now as a 2xLP 180-gram vinyl edition.

The Magnificent Seven is a remake of the 1960s western film, which in turn was a remake of the 1954 Japanese classic film, Seven Samurai.

As the town Rose Krick is put under the siege of industrialist Bartholomew Bogue, the residents enlist the help of seven outlaws. Headed by bounty hunter Sam Chisolm they ought to protect them while they prepare for the anticipated violent confrontation. However, upon meeting the town's residents, the Seven find themselves fighting for much more than money.

The film stars Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D'Onofrio, Lee Byung-hun, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Martin Sensmeier, Peter Sarsgaard and Haley Bennett.

Multiple Award Winning composer James Horner was asked to write the film's score but died on June 22, 2015. Nearly a month after his death movie director Antoine Fuqua learned that James Horner had already started working on music for the film before filming commenced. Horner's friend and score producer Simon Franglen co-composed the score after Horner's death. This score will be the final James Horner score to be released posthumously.

    Tell It Like It Is

Tell It Like It Is is generally considered one of the greatest R&B tracks of the 1960s, where the song resided on the top of the R&B charts for several weeks and even reached #2 on the pop charts in the midst of Beatlemania. The identically named debut album from Aaron Neville was first released in November of 1966 and will be re-released for the first time in many years on its 50th anniversary.

Within the Realm Of A Dying Sun

With Dead Can Dance now firmly centred round the core of Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard, they released their third album Within The Realm Of A Dying Sun in the Summer of 1987, showing both a continued maturity in their sound and rise in their popularity. Recorded during an intense period of musical and personal growth for the band, the album's eight songs are split equally between the duo with the first half being sung by Brendan and the second Lisa. At the time, Q Magazine described the album as combining "superb voice, ethereal church choirs, sweeping strings and a brochure of ethnic music: Middle Eastern, Indian, Moorish, anywhere but London's East End where the couple resided." The album's cover only adds to the album's aura of mystery with a haunting photograph of the family grave at the Père-Lachaise cemetery in Paris of famed French biologist François-Vincent Raspail.

    Zombie

On the title track of 1976's Zombie, Fela and the backup singers ridicule the mindset of men in uniform over an urgent, quick-march accompaniment from Afrika 70. "Attention! Quick march! Slow march! Salute!" sings Fela, "Fall in! Fall out! Fall down! Go and kill! Go and die! Go and quench!" Each phrase is followed by the women singers' taunting response, "Zombie!" Just a few months later on 18 February, 1977, around 1,000 soldiers, most of them armed, swooped on the Kalakuta Republic. Fela was badly beaten, sustaining a fractured skull and several
broken bones. His mother, then aged 77, was thrown out of a window, fracturing a leg and suffering deep trauma. The army then set fire to the compound and prevented the fire brigade reaching the area. The blaze gutted the premises, destroying six Afrika 70 vehicles, all Fela's master tapes and band equipment, a four-track recording studio, all the residents' belongings and, for good measure, the free medical clinic run by Fela's brother, Dr Beko Ransome Kuti (who was also severely beaten in the attack). The first journalists to arrive on the scene were assaulted by soldiers. Inquisitive passers-by were similarly set upon. The army didn't want any witnesses.

    We Should Be Dead Together

You can feel the act of creation in every note or creak or cadence and it is intoxicating. The results are not overtly folk or psych or pop or rock yet they appeal to all of those senses at once. It is odd to have an 11-track EP. Even more strange is to organize it as one track followed by 10 tracks, as is done on the sleeve, especially when it plays out in a more traditional order in practice. But everything about Savaging Spires seems to go against convention. A band that All Music likened to Animal Collective and the Incredible String Band jamming on found instruments at The Residents' house, with Mark Kozelek as guest vocalist never ceases to surprise. This continues their habit of producing amazing results in front of a microphone, as their self-titled debut was considered by many to be an instant cult classic. Recalling the glory days of pastoral psychedelia according to The Wire and it found heavy rotation in the US on KALX, WFMU, WNYU, KVRX and many others.

    Spreading Rumours

Spreading Rumors is Grouplove's second full-length album.

Hannah Hooper met Christian Zucconi late one evening on the lower east side of Manhattan. They had both been living in New York for years and had never crossed paths before. But from that night forward the two could hardly be pulled apart. Soon after their connection Hooper was invited to an art residency in Greece on the island of Crete and Hooper insists without any hesitation she invited Zucconi to join her on this journey. Seriously, we had only known one another for a few days but are both so inspired and alive when we are together that going to Greece seemed like a magical and natural thing to do recalls Zucconi.

On Crete, in a small remote mountain village, Hooper and Zucconi met the members of their future band Grouplove a year before it was officially formed. Sean Gadd, a natural songwriter and guitar player, born and bred in London instantly bonded with the two eccentric New Yorkers. Their relationship became apparent through the music they were making day in and day out. Andrew Wessen, a pro surfer and musician from Los Angeles and his childhood friend Ryan Rabin, an accomplished drummer and producer, were also at the residency and quickly joined in with the musical trio. These five musicians make up the members of what we now know as Grouplove.

Like all good things, the summer and the residency came to an end and the five friends scattered back to their homes all over the globe. With Sean in London, Christian and Hannah in Brooklyn and Ryan and Andrew in Los Angeles Grouplove was faced with the challenge of what to do now. We all understood how rare it is for five strangers to feel as close as family and create passionate music together. We couldn't just return to Brooklyn and let the music we all made fade into a memory of that summer we had in Greece, explains Zucconi. Everyone pulled their funds together and Sean, Christian and Hannah made their way to Ryan Rabin's studio in LA to record their album. We seriously had the best time of our lives doing that record, says Zucconi. And the result is an incredibly special album where soaring harmonies coupled with sweeping anthems lead you through their powerful journey. Like the members of Grouplove, their music is diverse in influence and style but bonded together by an undeniably creative kinship.

Their experience back together and recording together was so potent that Hooper and Zucconi packed up their lives in Brooklyn and moved to LA to live and play their music.

We never could have dreamt this up says Zucconi, but at the same time we're not at all surprised - GROUPLOVE is meant to be. Our story a testament to fate, and our music is something we are ready to share.
