For Sale: Live At Maxwell's 1986

The Replacements initially formed in 1979, and were wild and quickly became notorious for their drunken, chaotic gigs. After they built up a sizable local following, the Minneapolis label Twin/Tone signed them. Critics and fellow musicians were quick to praise the band, and they developed a large underground following.

Tears for Fears The Seeds of Love on Numbered Limited Edition LP from Mobile Fidelity Silver Label

Meticulously Produced 1989 Orchestral Pop Work Includes Top 40 Hits Sowing the Seeds of Love and Woman In Chains

Vocalist Oleta Adams Debuts and Aids English Pop-Rock Duo's Pursuit of Soul, Gospel Strains

Mastered on Mobile Fidelity's World-Renowned Mastering System and Pressed at RTI: LP Brings Intricate Melodicism to Foreground

Having elected to defy tradition and wait four years to release a follow-up to their commercial breakthrough Songs From the Big Chair, Tears for Fears expand their creative prowess on The Seeds of Love. Opting for grand melodies over radio-targeted hooks and reflecting a slightly sunnier disposition, the compositions establish an even closer relationship to soulful roots and hint at gospel undercurrents. The duo, too, also discovered a secret weapon in the person of Oleta Adams.

Mastered on Mobile Fidelity';s world-renowned mastering system and pressed at RTI, this Silver Label LP resolves with striking clarity and precision the myriad layers of orchestral-themed information that pack jazzy fare such as Standing on the Corner of the Third World and balladic turns like "Year of the Knife." Distinguished with sumptuous production techniques that reportedly cost more than one million pounds to realize, the album benefits from the enhanced spaciousness, bigger soundstages, increased atmospherics, and amplified dynamic contrasts afforded by this audiophile collector's edition.

While again pursuing themes associated emotional hurt and healing, Tears for Fears take a more grandiose turn on arrangements steeped in suite-like forms and epic pop psychedelia. Adams lends warmth via her gospel-shot vocals as well as her female presence. She grounds songs with a combination of gentle poignancy and soaring theatricality, bringing a can't-miss energy to rigorously crafted works that aim for a lasting transcendence independent of radio interest.

Of course, with the proudly bombastic Sowing the Seeds of Love and Woman In Chains, Tears for Fears again found chart-scraping success, the hits rewards for uncompromising boldness and this record's expertly polished sound. The group's sonic evolution is also apparent on the album cover: an eye-popping, colorful montage suggestive of the music's harlequin textures and stylish devices replaces the stark, grey-hued image carried by its predecessor. Here's a set that you can fairly judge by the cover.

'Ternion', from the Latin for a group of three, sees We Have Band make a stylistic leap on from their debut 'WHB', which despite its critical acclaim the band were keen not to repeat. The result is a very different record, an intensely personal album that manages to be both uplifting and melancholic. Gone are the nonsense lyrics replaced by frank and honest accounts of their relationships, struggles to make sense of the world around them and the effect, both physical and emotional, of a life on the road.

The story of QUIET RIOT begins in 1980 when Kevin DuBrow formed a new band under his own name, working with Frankie Banali and a variety of musicians over the next few years before signing with Pasha/CBS Records, reverting back to the QUIET RIOT moniker, and entering the studio with new guitarist Carlos Cavazo and bassist Chuck Wright to start work on a new album. The year was 1982 and, following Randy Rhoads' well-documented death, former henchman Rudy Sarzo left Ozzy, replacing Chuck Wright who is the bass player on record for both the Metal Health and Don't Wanna Let You Go tracks, to complete the lineup and sessions for what would become 1983's Metal Health.

Those who clocked Abe Vigodas transition from the angular-punk of 2006's Kid City the startling tropicali-punk of 2008's Skeleton should know the LA quartet aren't ones for repeating themselves. To Skeletons hot-hot-hot template, they now add glassy shards of cold wave pop, with synthesizers, sequencers and altogether broodier beats. Scorching temperatures, icy currents, Crush is a thermal column of vertiginous brilliance!

Just as Skeleton was difficult to define, Crush is a similar collision of sound, another helter-skelter joy ride through four boys private party. Even so, there was a thought process behind this new surge. In 2009, after the band released the Reviver EP, Dane Chadwick replaced drummer Gerado Guerreno, introducing a new style of regimented beats as well as other musical ideas to the table.

Santana III on Numbered Limited Edition LP from Mobile Fidelity Silver Label

Last Santana Album Recorded With Famed Woodstock Band

With Guitar Virtuoso Neal Schon in Fold, Santana Makes Musical Magic That Truly Spans the Globe years Before "World Music" Became a Genre

Mastered on Mobile Fidelity's World-Renowned Mastering System and Pressed at RTI: LP Breathes With Sumptuous Warmth

The final Santana album recorded with the leader's famed Woodstock lineup, one of the most capable and explosive bands ever assembled, Santana III (commonly referred to as The Third Album) is a beacon of Latin-tinged rock, melodic creativity, and cohesive interplay. The record also marks the debut of young guitar virtuoso Neal Schon, who functions as the ideal foil to Santana, whose playing on this 1971 set rivals that of the finest in his career. If not for arriving after the monumental Abraxas, it is likely Santana III would be mentioned in the same breath as groundbreaking psychedelic classics such as Bitches Brew. It's that good.

Embracing the concept that all of the members should share their musical ideas, Santana added two crucial components to his band: Schon, discovered at the age of 15 playing in a Palo Alto club, and Thomas "Coke" Escovedo, who during the sessions temporarily replaced ill percussionist Chepito Areas, and whose percussive assistance helped define the album's feel. With Schon in the fold, Santana strives for the unknown, and yet, manages to stave off the numbing excesses that define much of the period's output.

From the opening "Batuka," peppered with Schon's stirring guitar lines, to the sensitive "Everything Is Coming Our Way," infused with a mesmerizing Hammond organ underpinning that supports Santana's vocal pathos, the record teams with inventiveness. Involving albeit accessible concoctions of funk, jazz, rock, blues, and soul run throughout the set. Spanish-styled flavors infuse a majority of the material, ranging from the salsa piano on "Guarjira" to the distinctive "No One to Depend On," a lively take on the cha-cha-cha.

A globe-spanning armada of percussive instruments-timbales, congas, drums, vibes, tambourines, and more-as well as the existence of a three-person percussion team that fits in harmoniously with Santana, Schon, and company makes Santana III a masterful accomplishment in musical chemistry and the exploration of true world craft.

The Silver Label LP of Santana III breathes with sumptuous warmth and you-are-there realism. The tension of Schon's guitar lines, the album's open sound, and extensive use of studio echoes (check the presence of the backward echo on "No One to Depend On") fill the soundstage, replete with the kind of depth and dynamics one expects from a first-rate audiophile recording.

    Mo Beauty (On Sale)

Mo Beauty is the debut solo release from celebrated singer/songwriter Alec Ounsworth, who earned acclaim with his band Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. The album was produced by veteran musician/producer and fellow Philadelphia native Steve Berlin (Los Lobos, Blasters, John Lee Hooker, The Replacements), who initially suggested a New Orleans setting for recording. Working with some of the city's most storied musicians, including George Porter of The Meters on bass, Ounsworth has crafted a collection of songs that pick up where Clap Your Hands Say Yeah leave off. Mo Beauty carries on the band's vein of quirky humor, unabashed melody, and sonic experimentation, but with the weight of New Orleans and its history hovering over the recording, Ounsworth has dug deep on songs like Holy, Holy, Holy Moses (song for New Orleans), while tracks like South Philadelphia groove in a whole new way.

Mo Beauty features George Porter, Jr. on bass, Stanton Moore on drums, Robert Walter on keys, and Matt Sutton on baritone and pedal-steel guitars, with additional help from members of the talented New Orleans community.

    Uzi Mahmood (Discontinued) (On Sale)

NOW AVAILABLE ON CD!!! BRYN JONES died January 14, 1999. The man best known as MUSLIMGAUZE was 37 years old, and at the peak of his career. During his short life he recorded an astonishing number of albums, some 200 at last count so its no wonder new material continues to surface so long after his passing. Uzi Mahmood was recorded to satisfy a specific request. Soleilmoon wanted a 12-inch single that DJs could play in nightclubs. The idea was to introduce Muslimgauze to a potentially enormous new audience. Two weeks after agreeing to record a disco album for Soleilmoon, Uzi Mahmood was delivered to the label. But instead of the agreed on two or three tracks, he sent an eleven song compact disc, followed a week later by a 90-minute digital audio tape containing the entire CD plus two more pieces. Four songs were eventually selected for the experiment, and in the spring of 1998 a dirty-and-dubby 12-inch EP was released. Two more songs were later used to replace a pair of corrupted tracks on the master tape for Hussein Mahmood Jeeb Tehar Gass, released on CD in 1999. The music was well received by fans, but the hoped-for dance floor revolution never happened, and the little record with the unconventional beats went out of print a few years later. Fast forward to the present: The year is 2009 and the four-song EP has been out of print for more than five years, seven more songs lie waiting in the vault, still unreleased, and the two tracks tacked onto Hussein Mahmood Jeeb Tehar Gass are the only ones in wide circulation. Now available as a two CD set. Disc one has the eleven tracks from the original master, disc two has the two extra songs that came on the DAT.

    Fight Softly (Discontinued) (On Sale)

The prime mover of The Ruby Suns, Ryan McPhun has literally traveled around the world to arrive at Fight Softly, the bandÆs 2nd album for Sub Pop, and 3rd overall. McPhun possesses (or is possessed byà) a voracious musical mind and this new album is the kind of head-spinning combination of big-picture vision and sumptuous detail that only comes from an artist with an urgent need to express himself. Fight Softly veers from the path set by its predecessor, the 2008 release Sea Lion. Thematically, it's not as wide-eyed or lighthearted, picking apart the relationships faced as we pass through the world with our surroundings, each other, ourselves. Sonically, it remains as beat-centric, though these beats are deliciously artificial, stretched and compacted and distorted beyond recognition. Melodies are scuzzy and digital, no guitars strummed or basses plucked. McPhun's soulful upper-register croon, swallowed into the mix, replaces group chants and full-throated singalongs. Rather than an album of clearly-drawn influences, Fight Softly is a unique, inscrutable synthesis, more itself than anything else.

Davis' Self-Proclaimed "Directions in Music" March Begins Here

Mastered from the Original Master Tapes: Abundant Jazz, Funk, and Rock Textures Rotate Around a Luscious Tonal Center

Landmark 1968 Effort Recognized as Davis' Prelude Into Full-On Fusion: Exotic Suite-Like Album Beautiful, Intense, Adventurous

Miles Davis' move into full-on fusion starts here. Abandoning his bebop roots and chasing electric dreams, rock-based rhythms, and ostinato pulses, the icon gives life to new music forms on Filles de Kilimanjaro, a titanic release prized for its historical significance and lasting beauty. Grounded and focused, the five compositions unfold like a unified suite. Such peak lyricism, flourishes, and phrases are experienced in the highest-possible fidelity on Mobile Fidelity's 45RPM 2LP set.

Mastered from the original master tapes and pressed on 180g vinyl at RTI, this collectable audiophile version of Filles de Kilimanjaro joins the ranks of eleven other essential Davis sets given supreme sonic and packaging treatment by Mobile Fidelity. Loaded with revealing signatures, the record takes on even greater import when heard the way Davis and his mates discerned it in the studio. Backgrounds are squid-ink black, pianissimo lines shimmer, and the electric piano emerges with tube-amp warmth.

Indeed, the exotic sound, touch, and feel of the songs on Filles de Kilimanjaro are as crucial as the melodies. To that extent, listeners can now enjoy the expressive tonalities and lush colors from each instrument in full-range glory. Voicings, harmonics, and pitches are rendered with exquisite detail. The manners in which the textures and phrases rotate what seems like a unified tonal center places you at the original recording sessions, executed in July and September 1968.

The final appearance of Davis' classic second quintet bears fruit on three of the record's cuts, including the title track and R&B-tinted "Frelon Brun." Sparked with restrained funk, driving grooves, and bluesy accents, Filles de Kilimanjaro maintains an instinctive flow and controlled fredom that permit Davis to oversee an innovative blending of alterations, improvisation, and cycles. Comprised of multiple sections, "Petits Machins" is a lesson in perfectly played melodic complexity, with chromatic riffs, dominant chords, syncopated progressions, and switching meters forming a singular mosaic.

Filles de Kilimanjaro also represents a jumping-off point for Davis' lineup. For the September sessions, Chick Corea replaced Herbie Hancock while Dave Holland relieved Ron Carter. The new additions speak a different albeit common language, fitting in with Davis' desire to draw from rock and weave funk into open-minded excursions filled with exoticism, soulfulness, and wonder.

More than 40 years ago, this record epitomized the future of jazz. Davis even announced such aspirations with the tagline "Directions in Music." With the jazz world still trying to wrap its collective mind around its genius, it still does.

House With A Curse (On Sale)

How much change is a band willing to endure in pursuit of a dream? In the case of Coliseum, as much as it takes. In the three years since their second album, No Salvation (their first and only for Relapse Records), the Louisville power trio have changed labels, producers, engineers, and replaced the frenetic breakneck speed of former drummer Chris Maggio with the emphatic rhythmic stomp of Carter Wilson, all in the service of producing the album they always dreamed of. That album is House With A Curse, their third full-length and first for Temporary Residence Ltd.

Produced by the band at The Funeral Home in Louisville and mixed by J. Robbins in Baltimore, House With A Curse features no less than a half dozen guests: Will Oldham (Bonnie Prince Billy), J. Robbins (Jawbox), Jason Noble (Shipping News, Rachel, Rodan), Peter Searcy (Squirrel Bait) and more all stopped by to add vocals, extra guitar, strings and whatever else a particular song might have called for. House is not just a new and exciting chapter in the Coliseum story, it's a celebration of the underground music community that inspired its very existence.

KAB Super Record Grip - Push On Record Clamp (On Sale)

The newly redesigned KAB super record grip was designed to replace and improve upon the PIG clamp originally supplied with the Revolver brand turntables. This new design features a 2 piece precision molded frame, spring rubber insert and UHMW polyethylene non marring contact surface. This is especially useful on Rega brand turntables and others where there is very little spindle to grab on to.

The KAB Super Record Grip reduces resonance and acoustic vibration of the record itself, freeing the stylus to do its intended job of tracing the groove. The result is better focus and detail to the soundstage.

The Super record grip attaches quickly; by turning with slight pressure, it walks down the spindle and meets the record surface.

Note: For easier use, the center hole can be lubricated with a diluted solution of 5% Armor All® and alcohol, swabbed with Qtip®.

The built-in bubble level shows turntable level at a glance to within 1 degree of accuracy.

Spring reinforced rubber insert holds onto the turntable spindle firmly.

The built in bubble level allows a quick check of turntable level. A level turntable balances the forces of the needle in the groove.

When the needle is resting in the record groove, the entire record surface behaves as a microphone picking up vibrations from the air and the turntable below. Damping the record surface reduces the affect of these added vibrations to the needle's already difficult job of reading the groove.

The really great features to take note of with the KAB super record grip is the ease of use and cost effectiveness.

The super record grip represents great value. Yet it is quite good at what it does and even has the added benefit of showing level at a glance, each time you use it. Keeping with the KAB philosophy that more is better, but it needn't cost more!

One issue to be sensitive to is turntables with light floating spring suspensions. You will have to push down some while applying the super record grip. It does not rely on weight. (It only weighs 2 Oz) Be sure your turntable can Bottom Out safely. If this is a concern, consult your turntable maker first.

[In our opinion, if you can bottom out safely, the super grip is a better solution still over clamps that rely on weight, since they will change the operating height of your platter.]

    Tower Of Power

Tower Of Power is the third album release for the Oakland-based Funk band Tower of Power. This is their most successful album to date, which was released in May 1973. The album peaked at No. 15 on the Billboard Top LPs chart and received a Gold record award for sales in excess of 500,000. The album spawned their most successful single, So Very Hard to Go. The single peaked at No. 17 on the Billboard Hot 100. Two other singles from the album also charted on the Billboard Hot 100: This Time It's Real and What Is Hip?.

It marked the debut of Lenny Williams being the lead vocalist (though Williams had a solo career prior to joining T.O.P., plus he co-penned the song You Strike My Main Nerve from the previous album Bump City [MOVLP1244]). Tower Of Power also introduced the world to saxophonist and future Saturday Night Live band leader, Lenny Pickett, who was the youngest member of the band at the time, replacing original lead sax player Skip Mesquite. Also joining the lineup was organist/keyboardist Chester Thompson and guitarist Bruce Conte, who replaced original guitarist Willie James Fulton.

    The Beatles Mono Box Set

Limited Edition 14-LP Box Set With Exclusive 108-Page Hardbound Book

The Beatles' Original Mono Studio Albums Remastered At Abbey Road Directly From The Analogue Masters For Vinyl Release By Sean Magee and Steve Berkowitz

Lacquers Cut Using Neumann VMS-80 Lathe

The Beatles in mono: This is how most listeners first heard the group in the 1960s, when mono was the predominant audio format. Up until 1968, each Beatles album was given a unique mono and stereo mix, but the group always regarded the mono as primary. The Beatles' nine U.K. albums, the American-compiled Magical Mystery Tour, and the Mono Masters collection of non-album tracks will be released in mono on 180-gram vinyl LPs with faithfully replicated artwork. Newly mastered from the analogue master tapes, each album will be available both individually and within a lavish, limited 14-LP boxed edition, The Beatles In Mono, which also includes a 108-page hardbound book.

In an audiophile-minded undertaking, The Beatles' acclaimed mono albums have been newly mastered for vinyl from quarter-inch master tapes at Abbey Road Studios by GRAMMY®-winning engineer Sean Magee and GRAMMY®-winning mastering supervisor Steve Berkowitz. While The Beatles In Mono CD boxed set released in 2009 was created from digital remasters, for this new vinyl project, Magee and Berkowitz cut the records without using any digital technology. Instead, they employed the same procedures used in the 1960s, guided by the original albums and by detailed transfer notes made by the original cutting engineers.
Working in the same room at Abbey Road where most of The Beatles' albums were initially cut, the pair first dedicated weeks to concentrated listening, fastidiously comparing the master tapes with first pressings of the mono records made in the 1960s. Using a rigorously tested Studer A80 machine to play back the precious tapes, the new vinyl was cut on a 1980s-era VMS80 lathe.

Manufactured for the world at Optimal Media in Germany, The Beatles' albums are presented in their original glory, both sonically and in their packaging. The boxed collection's exclusive 12-inch by 12-inch hardbound book features new essays and a detailed history of the mastering process by award-winning radio producer and author Kevin Howlett. The book is illustrated with many rare studio photos of The Beatles, fascinating archive documents, and articles and advertisements sourced from 1960s publications.

Via Michael Fremer (Analog Planet) on the mastering process:

The EQ applied was based upon the original cutting engineers' notes as well as careful listening to original first lacquer, first mother, first stamper EMI pressings (-1, 1, G matrix). The cartridge used was Ortofon's 2M Black.

It's important to remember that the tapes have aged-some as much as fifty years-and the monitoring, playback and mastering equipment have changed as well, even though the work was done in the very same room in which the originals were mastered. Solid state has replaced tubes in the cutting chain.

Lacquers were cut using Abbey Road Studios' Neumann VMS-80 lathe, equipped with a Neumann SX-74 cutter head. The originals were cut on a Scully lathe, perhaps with a Westrex cutter head.
