In August of 2009, Dan Mangan released his sophomore album, Nice, Nice, Very Nice in Canada. After three and a half years of touring his sleeper-hit debut, Postcards and Daydreaming, Dan was ready and eager to unveil a collection of lyrical ruminations that showcased his growth as a songwriter. The album shot to #1 on the iTunes Canada singer/songwriter album chart and at one point simultaneously held the #1 airplay positions CBC Radio 3, The Peak (Vancouver) and Canadian college radio. Rave reviews came from heavy hitting national music magazines as well as countless blogs and print media. Then came the news that Dan had won XM Radios Artist Of The Year as well as CBC Radio prizes for vocalist and song of the year for Robots. Britains NME magazine featured him as one of Canadas most promising acts. In late 2009, Arts & Crafts proudly welcomed Dan Mangan to its growing roster for the U.S. of Nice Nice Very Nice.

    Nice & Smooth

Nice & Smooth is the debut album of the hip-hop duo Nice & Smooth. The album is notable for its sense of humor and comedy rhymes. Although the album contains explicit lyrics on it, it is also at its best with Greg Nice's crazy rhyming with humor and Smooth B's slow lover rhymes. It was included in The Source's 100 Best Rap Albums. Continuing with its vinyl reissue campaign, UMe will be reissuing this classic on standard weight black vinyl for the fist time in over 20 years.

    Nice An' Cool

Part of the ultimate audiophile Prestige stereo reissues from Analogue Productions - 25 of the most collectible, rarest, most audiophile-sounding Rudy Van Gelder recordings ever made. All cut at 33 1/3.

All mastered from the original analog master tapes by mastering maestro Kevin Gray. 200-gram LPs pressed at Acoustic Sounds' state-of-the-art pressing plant, Quality Record Pressings, plated by Gary Salstrom

Deep groove label pressings, tip-on jackets on thick cardboard stock

A 1961 set of standards heavy on the ballads, Nice An' Cool is prime Gene Ammons. In front of a sympathetic piano-bass-drums trio (Richard Wyands, Doug Watkins, and the great J.C. Heard, respectively), Ammons' brilliantly soulful tenor saxophone really stretches out on the familiar melodies, but the relatively concise arrangements (all of the eight tracks are between three and eight minutes, with most hovering around the five-minute mark) don't allow him to wander too far afield as he occasionally does on less structured sessions. Nice An' Cool is first and foremost a mood album, with the unity of sound more important than the individual performances, but Ammons particularly shines on the extended opener, a tender, restrained version of The Music Man's Til There Was You that sidesteps the mawkishness of many interpretations in favor of a dignified grace. The backing trio is excellent throughout.

    Super Fake Nice

Nearly twenty years since the formation of his Tennessee-based project, Self, Matt Mahaffey is releasing a new EP - Super Fake Nice.

The six-song collection will feature original tracks - "Gonna Rock," "Subconscious," "Hey Hipster," "Looks And Money," "Splitting Atoms" and the lead single "Runaway." Super Fake Nice was written, produced, recorded, performed and arranged by Matt Mahaffey at his Fresh Imperial studio in Franklin, Tennessee. This is the first new body of SElf material to be released since his 2005 album Porno, Mint, & Grime.

SElf is the brainchild of Matt Mahaffey, a multi-instrumentalist studio wizard. He began writing songs at the age of four and spent a large part of his high school and college upbringing mastering studio techniques. In 1995 he released his debut SElf album, Subliminal Plastic Motives followed by tours with Garbage, 311 and Cracker. An early review of the debut from People Magazine described Mahaffey as a "virtual one-man rhythm nation" and stated the album proves " that alternative rock can be more than atonal, angst-ridden prattle." Following Subliminal , came releases on Dreamworks and Spongebath including 1999's Breakfast With Girls and 2000's Gizmodgery (made completely with toy instruments).

Since then, Mahaffey further crafted his unique blend of funk, hip-hop and alt-pop and in the early 2000's his focus started to shift into film and television, scoring music for CSI Miami, Entourage and Weeds. He also started playing and producing for other artists including Beck, Pink, Liz Phair, Keith Urban, The Sounds, Lupe Fiacsco, HelloGoodbye and Tenacious D.

    Have A Nice Day

Have a Nice Day, Bon Jovi's ninth studio album of original material, picks up where 2002's Bounce left off, showcasing a harder, heavier band than either 2000's Crush or Jon Bon Jovi's 1997 solo effort, Destination Anywhere. Not only that, but this 2005 album finds Jon Bon Jovi picking up on the serious undercurrent of Bounce, writing a series of angry, somber neo-protest songs that form the heart of this record. While he's not exactly explicitly political here, there's little question that he's dissatisfied with the world today, whether it's about life in small town America or the sorry state of pop music; he even goes so far to write a variation on Bob Dylan's classic Chimes of Freedom with Bells of Freedom. Since he's stretching out lyrically, the band finds a comfort zone in sticking in the tried-and-true arena rock that's been their signature sound for 20 years now.

For the most part, this session is tight and structured, keeping Ammons firmly locked in the groove more so than on some of his more wandering dates. Scary Monsters & Nice Sprites EP

Previously the frontman for L.A. post-hardcore outfit From First to Last, Sonny Moore continues to develop his unforeseen dubstep tendencies with the second EP under his Skrillex alias, Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites. This surprising electro reinvention still throws a few bones to his previous metalhead crowd, with the virtually demonic basslines of Scatta, a blisteringly dirty 140-bpm anthem featuring the suitably breakneck-speed MC skills of U.K. grime collective Foreign Beggars, and the sinister lyrics of the Daft Punk-esque robotic rave of Kill EVERYBODY (I want to kill everybody in the world) just as unsettling as anything the two albums recorded with his former band had to offer.

But perhaps inspired by the move to Deadmau5's Mau5trap label, its nine tracks present a more chilled-out, melodic, and even playful side to the eclectic producer. With You, Friends (an ambient reworking of the closing track to his My Name Is Skrillex EP) is a slow-burning epic that displays his penchant for chopped-up vocal samples amidst some lilting piano chords, swirling proggy electro riffs, and hypnotic house beats; All I Ask of You echoes the lush techno of his new boss, with its warm layered synths, ethereal vocals (courtesy of Penny), and Euro-trance hooks; while even the heavier moments are interspersed with lighter touches, such as the ingenious sample of YouTube sensation speedstackinggirl (Yes! Oh My Gosh) on the towering beats and distorted bass of the title track and the Space Invaders-style bleeps, helium vocals, and stadium rock handclaps on the chaotic electro-clash of Rock n' Roll (Will Take You to the Mountain).

The three remixes from Noisia, Bare Noize, and Zedd are solid if unspectacular, with only the latter's chilled-out version of the title track providing anything wildly different from the originals. But the invention showcased on the first six bass-heavy anthems is more than enough to suggest that the U.S. has found someone who is capable of selling the dubstep sound back to its South London homeland.

To truly understand the color and shape of Nice Nice, you must really see them live. Only then will you realize that every sound heard on this record, every intricate ployrhythmic layer is LIVE. There are no overdubs, and there are only two people in the band. But if you haven't been lucky enough to see them yet, then bear in mind those facts when throwing this one into your headphones. Born in Olympia, WA and now calling Portland, OR their home, guitarist Jason Buehler and percussionist Mark Shirazi meticulously warp hard funk, psych, soul, dub, angular rock and no-wave noise into a mechanical beast that can take you from dream to dance in 30 seconds flat. The instrumentation is relatively simple: guitar and drums. But it's the endless tap-dancing of effects pedals and rock solid dub beats that make every moment more magical than the last. Having played with everyone from Black Dice to Cex to Gold Chains - and thoroughly blowing their minds all the same - Nice Nice are that rare band that seems to equally appeal to the bedroom stoners and Friday night hipsters. Intimidating only in their technical prowess, Nice Nice don't smash their equipment, they smash their stereotypes. Bring it on.

    Golden Rules For Golden People

Boston, MA's Pretty & Nice will release their third full-length album, Golden Rules for Golden People on April 30, via Rory Records.

We put a lot of positive energy into this batch of songs. Most of them started on acoustic guitar out on the front steps of the studio/house. We took a lot of inspiration from being outside in the sun and from changes in our own lives and in the way we approach each day. The past couple years have been difficult, but transformative and we grew a lot individually and together. The songs reflect those changes, explains vocalist/guitarist Holden Lewis. We felt freer than ever when recording the songs and that opened them up a lot. Shimmering, shining, soaring were all words used to describe what we wanted to hear. Our communication in the studio was better than ever and it became a deeper collaborative adventure than on past recordings.

    Various Positions

Leonard Cohen is indubitably one of the most legendary and successful singer-songwriters from the '60s. However, his label at first refused to release 'Various Positions', his seventh studio album, saying Look, Leonard; we know you're great, but we don't know if you're any good.

The success of the album proved them wrong, giving us one of his most beloved and arguably his most covered song 'Hallelujah', along other gems such as 'Heart With No Companion' and the Gainsbourg-esque 'Dance Me To The End Of Love'.

This is a nice addition to the rest of Cohen's releases on Music On Vinyl.

    Scarlatti: Sonatas

Scott Ross was an American-born harpsichordist who spent much of his life in France and attended the conservatories of Nice and Paris. He was notably the first musician to record the complete keyboard sonatas - 555 in all - of Domenico Scarlatti (1685-1757).

In 1985, to celebrate the 300th anniversary of Scarlatti's birth, French radio broadcast a weekly series of Scarlatti Sonatas played by Scott Ross. By the end of the series, Ross had recorded the world's first complete version of the 555 Scarlatti sonatas. Many of the sonatas had never been recorded before, even though a limited selection had featured in the repertoire of major pianists - including Horowitz, Michelangeli, Gieseking, Meyer, Haskil and Gilels - for decades.Scott Ross's personal favourite among the sonatas was No 208, which he described as: "the most beautiful, even if it is also the slowest, and the happiest - it's the sunniest of all of them."
