    The Hunter

The Hunter, the follow-up to Mastodon's critically embraced 2009 album, Crack The Skye, was recorded in the band's hometown of Atlanta, GA as well as in Los Angeles with producer Mike Elizondo. As with all of their albums, Mastodon (bassist/vocalist Troy Sanders, guitarist/vocalist Brent Hinds, guitarist Bill Keliher, and drummer/vocalist Brann Dailor), decided to take a completely different tack and musical approach on their newest venture, but as usual the band does so boldly and with reckless abandon.

    The Hunter

Released five years after Jennifer Warnes' breakthrough with Famous Blue Raincoat, The Hunter is a varied affair that features songs from Todd Rundgren (Pretending To Care), The Waterboys (The Whole Of The Moon), Donald Fagen (Big Noise, New York) and mentor Leonard Cohen who also guest appears (Way Down Deep), as well as some of her own original material. It's the voice that matters here and Jennifer Warnes' is truly crystalline. Produced by Elliot Scheiner, The Hunter like Famous Blue Raincoat, enjoys masterful recording technique and now the incomparable Cisco Music treatment. Mastered by the great Bernie Grundman and pressed at RTI on 180g virgin vinyl.

    Feast Of The Hunters' Moon

Sugar Hill Records is proud to announce the upcoming release of Feast of the Hunters' Moon, the debut album from Portland, Oregon-based Black Prairie. Featuring three-fifths of The Decemberists and two of the city's finest folk stylists, the heavily acoustic debut was produced by Tucker Martine (The Decemberists, Death Cab for Cutie) and embodies the rich sonic landscape of the Portland music scene while integrating the diverse backgrounds of its members. As described by dobroist Chris Funk, the band's sound bridges the music of Clarence White and Ennio Morricone in a way that defies genre characterization.

Decemberists guitarist Funk and bassist Nate Query hatched the plan to start a primarily instrumental string band while on the road. Funk began to spend time playing the square-necked Dobro guitar, and the pair recruited fellow Decemberist Jenny Conlee to play accordion. Portland musicians Annalisa Tornfelt and Jon Neufeld then filled out the ranks on violin and guitar, respectively.

Black Prairie's songs consist mostly of instrumentals; their arrangements draw from bluegrass and old-time string band traditions, while Conlee's accordion and Tornfelt's violin instill klezmer and gypsy elements to the band's unique and vibrant sound. The quintet sometimes takes an almost-classical approach to composition, with songs containing multiple movements that ebb and flow in a way that differs greatly from traditional pop or bluegrass structure. The band decided it would be a shame not to make use of Tornfelt's vocal ability, so she sings on a handful of tracks as well. The thirteen album tracks include mostly original compositions by the five band members, with a smattering of traditional material intertwined throughout.

    The Ivory Hunters

When Bill Evans agreed to do a two piano date with Bob Brookmeyer, eyebrows surely must have raised. Pairing a rising superstar of modern jazz with a gentleman known for playing valve trombone and arranging charts might have been deemed by some as a daunting task. Fortunately for the keyboardists, this was a good idea and a marvelous concept, where the two could use the concept of counterpoint and improvisation to an enjoyable means, much like a great chess match. For the listener, you are easily able to hear the difference between ostensible leader Evans in the right channel of the stereo separation, and the accompanist Brookmeyer in the left. The opener Honeysuckle Rose gives a basic idea of what to expect, as Evans leads out, Brookmeyer counters his moves, and they trade riffs in an inventive bridge. The Way You Look Tonight is similar as Brookmeyer is more playful in his chiming chords and second melody line. The energy level is very good here, as well as on the democratic, funky contemporary intro to the easy swing of It Could Happen to You and I Got Rhythm, jam-packed with fun plus risk-taking. There's a different give and take during The Man I Love, and they turn the lamp down low on a delicate version of As Time Goes By as the pianists trade leads, and bassist Percy Heath adopts a more pronounced role. It is Heath and drummer Connie Kay, on loan from the Modern Jazz Quartet, who precisely and firmly cement rhythmic elements, allowing the pianists to use space, harmony, wit and wisdom to full effect. Some have called this an effort based more on gimmick and showmanship, but if you agree to listen closely, the depth and substance of Evans and Brookmeyer reveals a lot of soul, invention, and musicians simply having a real good time. It would be nice to hear any alternate takes from this marvelous date.

Hunters are excited to announce their signing to Mom + Pop for their debut LP. Since releasing their 2011 EP Hands On Fire, Hunters have been hard at work touring and playing live shows with METZ, Cloud Nothings, A Place To Bury Strangers and The Kills. They've also had breakout performances at last year's CMJ with shows at Brooklyn Vegan's showcase and the FADER FORT. Hunters have also been featured on the cover of the Village Voice along with acclaim from The New York Times, New Yorker, FADER, SPIN, Filter among many others. With a fury of fuzzed out guitars and bodies being strewn across the stage, Derek Watson and Izzy assault the masses with a wave of barely contained chaos.

There are few artists in the music industry who have had more influence on acoustic and electronic jazz and R&B than Herbie Hancock.

In 1963, Miles Davis invited Hancock to join the Miles Davis Quintet. During his five years with Davis, Herbie recorded many classics with the jazz legend including ESP, Nefertiti and Sorcerer, and later on he made appearances on Davis' groundbreaking In a Silent Way and Bitches Brew.

Hancock's own solo career blossomed on Blue Note, with classic albums including Maiden Voyage, Empyrean Isles and Speak Like a Child. After leaving Davis' fold, Herbie put together a new band called The Headhunters and, in 1973, recorded Head Hunters. Head Hunters was a pivotal point in Hancock's career, bringing him into the vanguard of jazz fusion. Hancock had pushed avant-garde boundaries on his own albums and with Miles Davis, but he had never devoted himself to the groove as he did on Head Hunters. Drawing heavily from Sly Stone, Curtis Mayfield and James Brown, Hancock developed deeply funky, even gritty, rhythms over which he soloed on electric synthesizers, bringing the instrument to the forefront in jazz. It had all of the sensibilities of jazz, particularly in the way it wound off into long improvisations, but its rhythms were firmly planted in funk, soul and R&B, giving it a mass appeal that made it the biggest-selling jazz album of all time (a record which was later broken).

Jazz purists, of course, decried the experiments at the time, but Head Hunters still sounds fresh and vital four decades after its initial release, and its genre-bending proved vastly influential on not only jazz, but funk, soul and hip-hop.

    Night of Hunters

Night of Hunters is a 21st century song cycle that finds the enigmatic Tori Amos drawing on themes from Satie, Granados, Chopin and other great composers. Her twelfth studio album and her first for Deutsche Grammophon tells a modern love story that is only unraveled after a journey to Ireland's mythic past. The album is an all-acoustic work. Guests include such esteemed players as The Apollon Musagete Quartet and the Berlin Philharmonic clarinet soloist Andreas Ottensamer.

With Night of Hunters, which she wrote and produced, Amos carries on the tradition of variations on a theme to create a bold new work while paying tribute to the mastery of the original compositions. In her own words: I have used the structure of a classical song cycle to tell an ongoing, modern story. The protagonist is a woman who finds herself in the dying embers of a relationship. In the course of one night she goes through an initiation of sorts that leads her to reinvent herself, allowing the listener to folllow her on a journey to explore complex musical and emotional subject matter. One of the main themes explored on this album is the hunter and the hunted and how both exist within us.

Head Hunters became not only Hancock's best-selling album but also the second highest selling jazz album of all time (at last RIAA count). It was in 1973 that he gathered a new band to combine electric music with funk, perhaps best exemplified in the pop music of Sly Stone.

Hancock took over all synthesizer duties, along with Fender Rhodes and clavinet and was backed by bass and drums. The opening bars of Watermelon Man with Bill Summers blowing into a beer bottle, along with the band's funky grooves and new electric sounds, captured the crossover fans who had otherwise avoided buying jazz records.

    Tragic Care

Montreal's Folly & The Hunter are set to release their sophomore album Tragic Care on Outside Music. The album was produced by Dave Smith and Jace Lasek (The Besnard Lakes) at Breakglass Studios and was mastered by Ryan Morey (Arcade Fire, Half Moon Run, Barr Brothers).Nick Vallee, the lyricist and vocalist, grew up in Vancouver and moved to Montreal to finish university, but also came to immerse himself in the vibrant local music scene. Laurie Torres, a native Montrealer, has played in bands since she was a teenager, and is proficient on multiple instruments including piano, guitar, drums and banjo. Christopher Fox, who grew up in England, also plays several instruments and is a sound engineer and music producer. Lyrically, the songs on Tragic Care explore the emotional fallout after a breakup. During the short, intense 12 day recording and mixing of the album the band also experienced the loss of several family members. The grief, darkness, and longing heard on the album are very real. Tragedy paired with striking harmonies results in a bittersweet, evocative album.

This 1966 release originally on Testament was one of the few records producer Jim Dickinson took with him to every recording session for reference material. McDowell and company perform what the record subtitle calls Mississippi Delta spirituals on this stark and moving set, which includes a version of one of his signature tunes, You Got to Move.

Digitally Remastered & Expanded Four 180gm Vinyl LP Pressing In Hard Case

Warm Leatherette represents a watershed moment in the career of Grace Jones. The first of her much loved and critically-lauded 'Compass Point trilogy' it saw the star embrace contemporaneous new wave (The Normal's 'Warm Leatherette', The Pretenders' 'Private Life'), old soul (The Marvelettes' 'The Hunter Gets Captured By The Game' and leftfield rock (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' 'Breakdown', Roxy Music's 'Love Is The Drug'). All sounded like nothing you'd ever heard before once Grace had finished with them. This set is a perfect demonstration of players, writers and production team at the very top of their game, headed up by a singular performer reaching the apex of her career to that point.

    Twin-Hand Movement

Twin-Hand Movement is Lower Dens' brilliant 2010 debut album! It is eleven perfect songs long. Filled with swarming guitar fuzz, bass waves, insistent drum throbs and Jana Hunter's charred voice. The album truly reflects the musicians and the city they call home, Baltimore, to the core: survivalist paranoia and rolling waves of droning rhythm crafted together methodically and beautifully into proud, catchy, weirdo anthems.

    AOXOMOXOA

The Grateful Dead's 1969 release Aoxomoxoa is the band's third overall and first foray into 16-track recording. The technological advancements and lack of record label encroachment allowed the band a freedom to explore and experiment in the studio as never before. That along with the blossoming Jerry Garcia/Robert Hunter songwriting partnership made for artistically groundbreaking material that would serve as the band's last overtly psychedelic studio release.

Ranked 366/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

    Remastered

After their 1972 breakthrough album & hitsingle All The Young Dudes, Mott The Hoople released their Mott album.
The single 'All the Way from Memphis' received considerable airplay on U.S. radio and the LP became the band's best seller to date in the U.S. Using the glam rock craze as their launch pad, the band straddled the widening gap between the teen-pop market and the college circuit. The LP Mott climbed into the Top 10 of the UK Albums Chart.

By the time Mott was released it was clear that Ian Hunter had become the dominant figure of the band. Aside from the lead track, the album includes introspective songs such as Ballad of Mott The Hoople, which exposes Mott's near break-up, and the peculiar I Wish I Was Your Mother, featuring multi-tracked mandolin, in which Hunter sings of his wish to see his love as a child. Hard rockers are given their due with 'Whizz Kid', 'Drivin' Sister', 'Violence' and 'Honaloochie Boogie'. A fine performance is delivered by Hunter in the almost religious 'Hymn for the Dudes'.

In 2003, the album was ranked number 366 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
