    The Fog

180 Gram, White And Green Colored Vinyl

John Carpenter's 1980 follow-up film to his smash hit Halloween featured ghost sailors terrorizing a Californian coastal community as a dense fog descends on their homes. The multi-talented filmmaker's atmospheric synthesiser score has long been a soundtrack favourite and this double album features a 20 track LP of the entire score, drawn from the original tapes, remastered by long-time Carpenter collaborator Alan Howarth on the A/B sides and the original album which featured 20 minutes of newly released music on the C/D sides.

"I went back to Sound Arts Studio in central Los Angeles and quickly began composing and recording new tracks. Dan Wyman, my creative consultant on Assault On Precinct 13 and Halloween was at my side programming the synthesizers, keeping a critical eye on my multi-tracked performances and maintaining quality control over the long hours of recording and mixing. And, out of all this frenzy, re-working and re-structuring, I produced what I consider to be one of my best scores" - John Carpenter.

    Coming Out of the Fog

Coming Out of the Fog continues Arbouretum's journey as their most focused and best-recorded album to date. Dave Heumann's vocals soar atop his guitar solos and Corey Allender's crunchy bass lines. Arbouretum have reigned in some of their maximalist tendencies, with every song coming in under 7 minutes. Heumann, Allender, Brian Carey (drums), and Matthew Pierce (keyboard, synthesizer, percussion), continue to mine the same breadth of styles made familiar on The Gathering and Song of the Pearl, notably the languid ballads, fuzzed-out burners, and heavier songs that have defined the group's unique doom laden folk-rock sound.

Assault on Precinct 13 / The Fog

12 Housed In Deluxe Mylar Mirrorboard Sleeve

Much of the power of the best films by the cult director John Carpenter can
be attributed to their use of music - music that, more often than not, was
composed and performed by Carpenter himself. What began as a necessity for
the low-budget productions by Carpenter became a major part of his aesthetic,
and established him as a pioneering figure in genre-film score work as well as
electronic music in general. Now, flanked by his son Cody Carpenter and godson
Daniel Davies, and with two albums (Lost Themes and Lost Themes II) of nonsoundtrack
material under his belt, Carpenter has decided to revisit some of his
    most beloved themes.

Assault on Precinct 13 was the first feature film Carpenter made after film school,
and he made it partially as an urban reimagining of Rio Bravo, a film by his idol,
Howard Hawks. In Carpenter's movie, a soon-to-be-closed police precinct is
placed under siege by a gang who have taken a blood oath to kill someone inside.
Assault is a classic, not least of all because it has perhaps Carpenter's best-loved
theme. The theme's main synthesizer line, partly inspired by the score to Dirty
Harry and Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song," is catchy and dread-inducing in
    equal measure.

Carpenter's theme for The Fog is one of his finest, and creepiest. In the film, a
weather-beaten old fisherman tells an ancient tale of betrayal and death to fascinated
children as they huddle together by their campfire. As a piece of driftwood
in a child's hands glows with spectral light, an eerie fog envelops the bay, and
from its midst emerge dripping demonic victims of a century old shipwreck,
seeking revenge. The spooky synthesizer tone in Carpenter's composition evokes
the advance of the fog itself, helping to make this a quintessential horror score for
    a classic horror movie.

This 12 release includes the themes to Assault on Precinct 13 and The Fog, newly
rerecorded by Carpenter and his Lost Themes bandmates. May it serve as a bridge
between the Horror Master's legendary, still relevant past and his remarkable
    present.

    London Fog 1966

Collector's Edition Boxed Set Features Previously Unheard Concert Recordings From 1966 On CD And Vinyl

Includes 8 x 10 Prints Of Unseen Photos And Replica Memorabilia

Before The Doors took the music scene by storm in 1967, they were the house band at the London Fog, a Sunset Strip dive bar located just footsteps away from the world famous Whisky a Go Go, the future home of many of the band's most legendary performances. The Doors will open a virtual time capsule in December with LONDON FOG 1966, a Collector's Edition boxed set that features unearthed audio recorded at the club in May 1966. Previously unreleased and not even known to exist until recently, this marks the earliest recordings of the band and finds the quartet mixing blues covers with early versions of Doors originals.

LONDON FOG 1966 will be available as an individually numbered limited edition of 18,000 copies from Rhino/Bright Midnight Archives. Presented in a lift-top package designed to look like a vintage storage box, the set features seven songs on both CD and a 10-inch record that's made to resemble a test pressing. Noted Doors engineer Bruce Botnick recently mastered the audio for this collection.

Along with the unreleased music, the set is packed with memorabilia and historic liner notes to provide a true time capsule of that fabled night at the London Fog, including a poster, the set list handwritten by John Densmore, a program for the Royce Hall UCLA student film screening, plus a London Fog coaster. There are also liner notes included from Sunset Strip legend Ronnie Haran-Mellen, who was the talent booker at the Whisky a Go Go. Haran-Mellen saw The Doors live for the first time at the London Fog and then booked them as the permanent house band at the Whisky, leading to the band's signing to Elektra and meteoric rise to superstardom.

Also contributing liner notes is Nettie Peña, one of the lucky few to be in attendance at the London Fog for this fabled show. Peña was a pivotal force in this release coming together as she captured the audio on a ¼" reel to reel recorder, which was the property of the Los Angeles Unified School District. Her father was a teacher for LAUSD and let her borrow the recorder to take to the show. Peña also photographed the band that evening and five black and white 8x10 reprints of these unpublished photos are included in the Collector's Edition, featuring a fresh-faced Morrison on a cramped stage with John Densmore, Robby Krieger and Ray Manzarek.

The show featured on LONDON FOG 1966 took place the same year that The Doors recorded their eponymous debut. Released in January 1967, the album would become one of the most influential in rock history. Like many of the band's early concerts, the show captured on this deluxe set reflects the group's deep love for the blues with covers of standards like Muddy Waters' "Rock Me" and "I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man." The set also includes raw performances of "Baby, Please Don't Go" (Big Joe Williams), "Don't Fight It" (Wilson Pickett), and "Lucille" (Little Richard).

During their residency at the London Fog, The Doors frequently worked out new songs on stage that would eventually appear on various studio albums. At this show, the band played two originals. The first, "Strange Days," would become the title track for the band's second studio album, which also came out in 1967. This is one of the only known live recordings of this track. The other Doors original, "You Make Me Real," wasn't officially released on a studio album until Morrison Hotel in 1970.

"To hear 'Strange Days,' that came out on their second album, in almost final shape so early on was truly amazing," says Jac Holzman, the President of Elektra Records who signed The Doors to their first recording contract.

Going back to the band's earliest days is a natural starting point for The Doors 50th anniversary celebration.

    The Vagabond Sessions

One night in the wilds of the Pacific Northwest came a gathering of sound and fury! That was the night that Canadas legendary DOA pulled out all the stops with their punk-rock comrades Potbelly from Oak Harbor, WA. Hundreds of rabid fans crammed into a converted storage locker they call Vagabond. Potbelly wailed away and the session was recorded on a 16-track recording desk. Then DOA appeared out of the fog and torched the place with classic songs like I Hate You, To Hell n Back, Fuck You and Fucked Up Ronnie. It was an evening not to be forgotten and this limited-edition 12 slab of vinyl makes sure it wont be.

    Spells (Awaiting Repress)

The Pharmacy's sound is hard to nail down: having been together for over a decade, the band has released countless singles, EPs, and full-lengths that range from basement power punk to lo-fi, psych-tinged garage rock. Due out August 12th on Old Flame Records, much of Spells was written in a cabin in Big Sur, informed by the rocky beaches and the fog rolling in from the Pacific. It was recorded in the basement of a used car museum in downtown Tacoma, with every track laid down live by Kyle Brunette, producer of Night Beats' S/T and Sonic Bloom LPs. Picking up where Stoned & Alone left off, Spells feels even more stripped-down and vulnerable, as if the members of The Pharmacy have allowed listeners an exclusive sneak peek into their collective brain.

    Halfaxa

Halfaxa is Grimes' sophomore LP. Originally available as a limited CD release, it's now available worldwide on LP.

Claire Boucher speaks a different language. And Halfaxa, her second album, feels like the dictionary from which we might discern just where this being comes from. Halfaxa is simultaneously more human than Geidi Primes, and yet falls deeper into a hole of mystical obscurity. The lyrics, as throughout this album, are designed to be an additional instrument, and not necessarily a device that gives obvious meaning to the proceedings.

There is a strong focus on primeval and simplistic percussion to Boucher's music, though I am apprehensive to compare it directly to club music. Even with all the fog and barriers she presents us with, at the core of her music is the human heart. There is a heartbeat in every note. Her breath is often used as a percussive element. Somehow, Grimes says more about life through her methodology than through what she literally chooses to say. Like all great world music, her sound transcends language.

    Metals

On her new 12-song collection, Metals, Canadian singer/songwriter Feist is joined by her longtime collaborators Chilly Gonzales and Mocky. The trio spent a frigid month Trying to sound like we had played together as long as we'd collectively known each other, around 50 years, then decamped for California's rugged Big Sur coastline to record them. Feist co-produced the album with her aforementioned collaborators and Valgeir Sigurosson (Bjork, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy.)

Recording can be a weightless free float from your day-life, and I like to pick places with certain fertile qualities that can give me a visual hook that I'm there to do something other than what I would otherwise do. And that clean line between land and see, the graphic edge of the continent pointing out toward the east, meaning not the Atlantic next stop Europe feeling, but next stop somewhere you've never been, Feist says. Plus, you are somewhere that looks completely unfound and yet it's been so perfectly recorded literarily. Steinbeck made 1000 albums there! Henry Miller and Anais Nin probably considered that line between land and sea, too. And on top of it, we truly found the perfect room to build a studio in, perched on the cliffs. A giant empty space.

Metals' songs range from low rumbling and moody ambiences to brutal and intense, as if it sonically maps the fog rolling in and the resulting cracking of thunder. There's a lot more chaos and movement and noise than I've had before, Feist says. I allowed for mistakes more than I ever have, which end up not being mistakes when you open things up and make room for them. It was about un-simplifying things and leaning on these masterful minds I have so much respect for. We were sort of testing the air, like a sea captain licks his finger to see which way the wind is coming from. It was less Brill Building and more naturalistic.

    Revolver

Ranked 3/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time!

Sourced From the Original Master Tapes!

    Pressed on 180 gram vinyl

    Cut at Abbey Road Studios

Their first psychedelic masterpiece, Revolver, represents The Beatles at their most creative and cohesive form, still a tight rocking unit firing on all cylinders but with a surging freedom of self-expression. It is arguably their greatest album, in which they introduce whole new vistas of sound yet still contain them within tightly structured and performed songs.

Recorded before The Beatles' personalities began to clash and in advance of the fog brought on by drug use, Revolver encompasses practically every imaginable style and then some. Gentle harmonic pop "I Want to Tell You," stained-glass acid rock "She Said She Said," upbeat soul "Got to Get You Into My Life," Indian "Love You To," and what, at the time (and in some ways still is,) the most cutting-edge pop composition ever devised, "Tomorrow Never Knows," -- a song that single-handedly re-imagined and rewrote the rules of production.

Before the woolly politics of flower power had really taken over psychedelia, Revolver remains sharp and acerbic, its cutting quality emphasized by great electric guitar-playing from both George and John. The band looked fantastic too, in hipster suits and dark glasses. Pound for pound and song for song, Revolver is as good as it gets, a real monster.

A team consisting of some of the best producers and engineers in the recording industry were brought together and would spend 4 long years mixing and mastering with some of the most state of the art recording equipment. Treating these records much like a science experiment, engineers ran extensive tests before copying the analog master tapes over into a digital format using 24-bit/192 kHz resolution, and carefully removing clicks, vocal pops and poor edits. Never altering the original songs themselves, just polishing them up a bit.

    Pattern + Grid World

Pattern + Grid World is the new EP from producer/musician Steven Ellison (aka Flying Lotus). While his album Cosmogramma was high in concept and wide in musical collaboration, Pattern + Grid World pulls the focus back to Ellison and his machines. These machines are speaking from the go, as Clay introduces itself in a fog of synth and vocoder and gives way to one of the many surprises here, the schizophrenic ping-ponging electro of Kill Your Co-Workers. Drenched in alternating melodies, it's a synthetic counterpart to the grand string and harp arrangements of Cosmogramma, making acclaimed illustrator Theo Ellsworth's subtly psychedelic cover image of vision-through-noise all the more intimate.

    In Between (Discontinued) (On Sale)

Kanine Records presents, In Between, the sophomore release from San Francisco's Young Prisms and follow-up to their acclaimed 2011 debut Friends For Now. Still a five piece, (albeit a different five) the album captures the highs and the lows of the last year. Born out of a traumatizing Heathrow Airport crisis and the death of a loved one, a strong sense of rejection, loneliness, and despair all play a huge role in the creation of In Between.

However, Its not all doom and gloom and its not like childhood friends Gio Betteo and Matthew Allen didnt see the changes coming (they named their first album Friends For Now). They just didnt expect it all to happen in such a dramatic fashion. Still united with singer Stefanie Hodapp and drummer Jordan Silbert, the Young Prisms welcome a second female vocalist/guitarist in Ashley Thomas.

Its this addition that brings a softer, more melodic touch to their fuzzed out sound. If Friends For Now yields comparisons to My Bloody Valentine and the Jesus and Mary Chain, In Between lends itself more to the Mazzy Star and Slowdive end of the spectrum, and one need not look any further than lead single Four Hours (Away). Its gentle swing and sullen vocal sweep will melt hearts and help pass those cold and dark hours.

To spotlight how the band has made peace with the past year, check out Runner, which will put a bounce in your step, while Dead Flowers has the Young Prisms stepping on their pedals harder than ever. Album opener Floating in Blue will fill your head with swirly dream pop and the guitar-drenched Midnights When pays homage to the innocent 50s inspired lullaby that Mary Chain fans will swoon to both awake and asleep.

Enlisting the production of Monte Vallier (Weekend, Mark Eitzel) and once again as a full five piece, the Prisms sound refreshed and indeed Young again. With Allen having moved outside the city, Betteo and Allen began traveling back and forth in between homes to write this record. The result is a perfect soundtrack to the loneliest road trip down California Highway 1 where the lights dim and flicker as the sun sets on the Pacific while the fog and haze return to the redwood forests and coastal cliffs.

    Club Meds

After a two year hiatus, an induction into fatherhood, and some time to regroup, two-time JUNO Award-winner Dan Mangan has returned under a new moniker, Dan Mangan + Blacksmith. The new name encompasses the spirit of the project's longstanding ensemble members joining the band from Vancouver's experimental music community, Kenton Loewen, Gordon Grdina, John Walsh (and often Jesse Zubot, JP carter and Tyson Naylor) with a communal sensibility that merits the marquee amendment.

Produced by Colin Stewart and Dan Mangan, Club Meds at times evokes images of subtler American-underground innovators like Blonde Redhead or Steve Reich. At other moments, it hits emotional pay dirt reminiscent of British scene-survivors like Peter Gabriel or Radiohead. Blacksmith brings an unmistakable character to Club Meds; a stark glassy edge that swells and sways like a roaring ocean. Through a fog of analog feedback loops and synths, the band's performances breathe deeply and steadily like a dragon at rest.

    Several Shades Of Why

In the quarter century since he founded Dinosaur Jr., J Mascis has created some of the era's signature songs, albums and styles. The laconically-based roar of his guitar, drums and vocals have driven a long string of bands such as Deep Wound, Dinosaur Jr., Gobblehoof, Velvet Monkeys, the Fog, Witch, Sweet Apple and he has also guested on innumerable sessions. But Several Shades of Why, recorded at Amherst, Massachusetts' Bisquiteen Studios, is J's first solo studio record, and it is an album of incredible beauty, performed with a delicacy not always associated with his work.

Nearly all acoustic, Several Shades of Why was created with the help of a few friends. Notable amongst them are Kurt Vile, Sophie Trudeau (A Silver Mount Zion), Kurt Fedora (long-time collusionist), Kevin Drew (Broken Social Scene), Ben Bridwell (Band of Horses), Pall Jenkins (Black Heart Procession), Matt Valentine (The Golden Road), and Suzanne Thorpe (Wounded Knees).

Together in small mutable groupings, they conjure up classic sounds ranging from English-tinged folk to drifty, West Coast-style singer/songwriters. But every track, every note even, bears that distinct Mascis watermark, both in the shape of the tunes and the glorious rasp of the vocals. Ten brilliant tunes that quietly grow and expand until they fill your brain with the purest pleasure.

    Shadow of the Sun

Comes With 7 Featuring Lead Single "Animal" & Vinyl-Exclusive B-Side "Fadeaway"

Moon Duo began work on their latest album during a period in which they
faced a curious new reality. Freed from deadlines and expectations, and suddenly
off the road for a stretch, Ripley Johnson and Sanae Yamada found themselves
each experiencing strange shifts in their perceptions of reality. Like the beginning
of an acid trip, or the edge of dusk, when shadows converge mysteriously with
light, life began to slip into a surreal dream, and then back, suddenly, without
warning. Unstable in these strange shadows and light, the band turned to music
to tether themselves to a kind of working sanity.

Shadow of the Sun is the result of a few months of wrangling with this new unsettling
way of being. Working both in a dark basement in Portland, and above
ground in sunny San Francisco, these new sounds and songs veered dramatically
from groove to groove, revealing sonic textures the duo had not previously
explored. The song "Night Beat," with its woozy dance rhythm, is an attempt at
finding joy and acceptance on this new, shifting ground, while "Wilding" plays
off the familiar Moon Duo sound, taking refuge in a repetitive, grounding
riff-scape. Elsewhere the band gives itself entirely up to the trip, cruising along
on the fuzzed rhythms of "Slow Down Low" and "Free the Skull," crashing into
the clenched-teeth herky-jerk of "Zero," and floating down, down, down, on the
narcotic mist of "In a Cloud."

To further coat the album in a fog of stoned confusion, the duo decamped to
Berlin to mix with Finnish beat-meister Jonas Verwijnen of Kaiku Studios. There
they managed to entirely reverse the clarity of the album, increasing the overall
focus, and creating an unorthodox argument for sanity through extreme negation
    of proper technique and conventionality.

The result, at the end of the trip, is the album Shadow of the Sun.

    Live At The Cellar Door

Mastered By Chris Bellman At Bernie Grundman Mastering And Pressed At Pallas In Germany

Neil Young will release Live At The Cellar Door, the latest in his Archives Performance Series, on Reprise Records. The album collects recordings made during Young's intimate six-show solo stand at The Cellar Door in Washington D.C. between November 30th and December 2nd, 1970, a few months after Reprise released his classic third solo album After The Gold Rush in August.

The album, which features Young performing on acoustic guitar and piano, includes tracks that are interesting for several reasons, such as stunning live versions of songs that appeared on After The Gold Rush (Tell Me Why, Only Love Can Break Your Heart, Birds, Don't Let It Bring You Down and the title track) and solo performances of the Buffalo Springfield songs Expecting To Fly (from their 1967 second album Buffalo Springfield Again), I Am A Child (from their third and final album Last Time Around and Young's 1977 Decade compilation), and Flying On The Ground Is Wrong, from their 1966 self-titled debut.

In addition, Live At The Cellar Door features early, raw performances of songs that wouldn't appear until subsequent Young albums, including the rarity Bad Fog Of Loneliness (which appears on Live At Massey Hall '71 - released in 2007-but was previously unreleased until the studio band version was included on Archives Vol. 1 1963-1972), Old Man (released two years later on 1972's Harvest album), a rare solo performance of Cinnamon Girl on piano (the full band version appears on Young's 1969 second solo album Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere), and Down By The River, also from Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere.

Live At The Cellar Door was recorded by Henry Lewy and produced by Young.

    Comin' Home Baby!

Mel TormÉ, nicknamed The Velvet Fog, was an American musician best known as a singer of jazz standards. He was also a jazz composer and arranger, drummer, an actor in radio, film, and television, and the author of five books. He composed the music for The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire) and co-wrote the lyrics with Bob Wells.

TormÉ made his movie debut in Frank Sinatra's first film, the musical Higher And Higher. His appearance in the 1947 film musical Good News made him a teen idol.

Paced by his only hit of the rock era, Comin' Home Baby! is a real crossover record balancing a few groovy dance numbers (like the title track) with early-60s cool jazz versions of the standards Walkin', Moanin', and On Green Dolphin Street.

    Valtari

You can forgive Sigur Rós for being hazy on the details of the recording of their sixth album Valtari. It's either the album they always wanted to make, or the album they almost didn't make, depending on how you look at it.

In 2011, the band started the painstaking forensic task of piecing together a cohesive and magical work from disparate constituent parts. If this sounds unromantic, the results are anything but. Something alchemical occurs when the four members of Sigur Rós are in the room together, and even if Valtari is more a "studio based" album than any of its predecessors (which usually start life as rehearsal room jams), the long hours of experimentation and unsentimental editing have yielded incredibly persuasive results.

In English Valtari translates as "steamroller" and there is something right about the title in terms of the process of its creation. The last three tracks of Valtari are like one long slow gorgeous fade out, as the listener, having been softened up by the slightly more "songy" start to the album, is left with the subtly shifting, deep introspective beauty of the last 24 minutes.

After that, penultimate track, Valtari is like the far heart of the album; eight minutes that feel like being alone in row boat on a chill day, small irregular waves lapping the wooden hull as a dense fog bank rolls in and ice slowly encases every surface. Below the fathomless green, deep endures. Gatefold 2LP with MP3 coupon.

David Cronenberg's 1986 sci-fi thriller was transformative for the film's lead character, the career of its star, Jeff Goldblum, and the makeup effects industry which awarded the film an Academy Award. Composer, Howard Shore, scored nearly all Cronenberg's films, and most recently is known for his work on the Lord of the Rings movies.

Upstairs At United, Vol. 5 (Keane) (Awaiting Repress)

On June 21st, 2012, Keane, recorded a gut wrenching recording session, in what would become Volume 5 of the Upstairs at United series. The band recorded four songs from their catalog in a stripped down fashion that included only vocals, piano/organ, guitar, & stripped down percussion. The songs recorded that day were It's Not True, Sea Fog, Silenced By The Night, and Fly To Me.

Each song in this session was recorded in a single take direct to ¼ inch tape then cut at 45 RPM for the ultimate listening experience.

The Yep Roc Records debut of North Carolina's Cities has just been reimagined by Ladytron, Daedelus, Fog, and Free the Robots. The remixers have tweaked the knobs to create a limited edition 4-song vinyl EP. The already danceable tracks are now dangerously seductive. Please beware. The Big Takeover called the Cities America's next great rock hope, and their homegrown roots got Jane Magazine's chest pumping, saying, It does my American heart proud... if you dig epic sounds like early-Radiohead, Interpol, and Sunny Day Real Estate, you'd best check them out. Look for this EP if you're a fan of Ladytron, Daedelus, Fog, electronic music, remix bandits, bedroom producers, and indie rock saviors.
