The Big To-DoATO Records is pleased to commence its relationship with the The Drive-By Truckers beginning with the incomparable rock band's label debut, The Big To-Do. The album is the band's 10th in their thirteen-year career and it features 13 new DBT tracks produced by their long time collaborator, David Barbe (Sugar, Bettye LaVette). Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley continue to handle chief songwriting duties here while bassist Shonna Tucker also contributes two originals. Brad Morgan (drums), John Neff (guitar/pedal steel), and Jay Gonzalez (keyboards) round out the current lineup.
The Big To-Do was recorded in three concentrated sessions during the first part of 2009: ten days in January, five days in March, ten days in May. That added up to 25 songs, a dozen of which sequenced into The Big To-Do. We had it mixed, mastered, and completely done, and Cooley wrote the best song that just needed to be on it, Patterson says with his raspy chuckle. This happens a lot with the Truckers, and it's always a good sign. So we went back in and recorded, mixed, and mastered 'Birthday Boy' pretty much in one fell swoop. Thirteen songs, then.
The balance of the remaining tracks, plus five more they've cut in the interim, will make up the Truckers' next album, which Patterson projects as a quieter affair.
This is, in large part, possible because the Truckers have such a long-standing relationship with David Barbe (ex-Sugar, etc.) and the Athens, GA, studio he calls Chase Park Transduction, which long ago Patterson helped to build so as to earn the right to record there.
It's gotten to where, that day of set-up time to get sounds and levels and all of that takes us about two hours, Patterson says. We can pretty much walk in the door, and we know exactly where to put everything to get that sound, so that's just one less thing to have to think about. I wanted to eliminate the distractions. That clarity of purpose translates into a delicious assortment of Trucker songs themed loosely around crime and (self-) punishment. The Wig He Made Her Wear, Patterson says, is both a true story (as seen on Court TV) and the closest he's come to making the movie he started out to make a decade or more back. The Fourth Night of My Drinking will speak for itself, and This Fucking Job (paired thematically with Cooley's wry Get Downtown) is arguably the most political song the Truckers have made since Living Bubba. Which leaves the deceptive, airy simplicity of Shonna Tucker's You Got Another and (It's Gonna Be) I Told You So to reckon with. We always knew she had that in her, Patterson says, delighted with the emergence of another strong songwriter in the band. It was never a secret. She was writing songs all along. But watching it come out has been a really amazing thing to behold.
Off the road, incidentally, didn't mean out of work. First off, there was the matter of cutting an instrumental album with the legendary Booker T, having previously served as the backing band to the equally legendary soul singer, Bettye Lavette. Potato Hole turned out all right, got a Grammy nod, and Neil Young added his touches separately even though it's pretty much a Truckers effort. But it's what they learned making Potato Hole that counts most. I think doing the Booker album really, really paid off a lot on the musical end of this record, even though stylistically it might not sound anything like that record, says Patterson, and then tells the story.
We made that record in four days, and that included the first day when it was, 'Booker, it's wonderful to meet you!' Maybe the third song we tracked just wasn't going the way he wanted it to go. We weren't quite understanding what he wanted. We were playing it right, but it wasn't right. All the sudden he just stopped the session. He gathered us around, and he told us a story about a Thanksgiving dinner, and the way it smelt in the house, he'd been on the road a long time, and they were all in - cousins and aunts he hadn't seen in several years. He said, 'It's just a day where nothing happens, but it's all really good.'
And we sat down and we played it, and we nailed it. It was like a revelation. We're a lyric-driven band, and our songs generally paint scenes and tell stories based on scenes. He instinctively knew that was how we operated. And I think it taught us a lot about how we operated. Going in and making this record, I could tell a real difference in the way the songs hold up musically. We put a little more care into that side of it than I think we ever did before because of what we learned from him.

Bonobo's debut album, 'Animal Magic', was released by Brighton label TruThoughts just as the journalistic vogue for 'chill out' music began to peak. Having rejected the advances of more than one major label, Green decided to sign with Ninja Tune and produced 'Dial 'M' For Monkey', a brooding and intricate record which not only continued his move away from traditional sampling techniques, but broadsided the idea that he only made music for people to listen to in transcendental bubble bath yurts. Now, with 'Days To Come', the processes and techniques he developed on the transitional 'Dial 'M'' have reached fruition.
Rather than turning himself into a producer-for-hire on his own record and delivering a compilation album, Green found one main singer to work with, and her voice certainly adds that crucial edge to proceedings. Bajka (pronounced 'Biker') grew up as part of Embryo, a travelling music commune, whose journies took them through Afghanistan, Nepal and Pakistan. A smokey, soulful singer, she sounds as at home on the big band soul-jazz of 'Between The Lines' as on the more melancholic Nightlite'. Green is also joined by labelmate and fellow Brightonian Fink on the beautiful come-on 'If You Stayed Over', a gem of emotional pop that sees both artists at the top of their game.
Green hasn't abandoned the instrumentals, though. 'Ketto' arrives with a dreamlike intensity, 'On Your Marks' hits with the all the force of early-era Shadow, while Part 2 of 'Transmissions94' is amongst the most beautiful and transcendent music that this quiet and self-effacing producer has crafted.1. Charlie Watts Meets The Danish Radio Big BandBefore Charlie Watts became the best-known drummer on the planet with The Greatest rock 'n' Roll Band in the World he lived for a few months in Denmark. According to English trumpeter and flugelhorn player, Gerard Presencer, who is also a member of the Danish Radio Big Band, it was something he only found out about by chance when he and Charlie talked on the telephone in 2009
"I landed a job with Danish Radio Big Band in 2009. A week or two after arriving in Copenhagen I got a call from Charlie. Later the idea dawned upon me for a return to his Jazz days over here after nearly 50 years. I spoke with my boss at the Danish Radio Big Band and went about putting this live project together. We agreed upon a week in Copenhagen in October 2010."
They rehearsed for 4 days, then played a concert on the fifth day at the newly opened Danish Radio Concert Hall in Copenhagen. This concert was recorded for broadcast by Danish National Radio. Charlie and his long-time bassist Dave Green went to record shops and strolled around the city, with no need for security guards. Charlie made it clear that he did not want to be placed on a big riser above the band, as he found that this did not help the musicians to bond.
In choosing the material, it was important to focus on the groove. According to Prescencer, "Having Dave Green on bass as special guest was an essential ingredient, as these two boyhood friends (next door neighbours growing up in Wembley, North London) have unspoken psychic connections that bassists and drummers, so there are times on this recording where their abundant empathy makes the rest of the band comfortable enough to really play out and take chances."
The album includes seven tracks, including two Mick and Keith compositions, 'Paint it Black' and 'You Can't Always Get What You Want', both arranged by Prescencer and another one, 'Faction' that is based on another Stones' classic. There are also two by Charlie himself, both written with fellow drummer Jim Keltner.
A day or two after the broadcast Prescencer began to think that the concert was so good it deserved to be heard more widely. "The Danish Radio needed very little convincing to hand over the recordings to me to work on, as well as Søren Frost our regular drummer and rhythm section consultant from the big band and the brilliant recording engineer, Lars C. Bruun. So, after several years work on this, we have produced this collection of music from our gig."
Charlie Watts meets the Danish Radio Big Band is the kind of album that many jazz fans had probably given up hope of hearing. In the glory days of big band jazz and arrangers like Oliver Nelson coming up with brilliant music, albums like this were, if not commonplace, at least more readily available. The truth is there is nothing commonplace about this album, it is a sheer delight.
Anyone who knows Charlie, knows how much he loves jazz. A few years ago when he and I were looking at a photo of the Stones playing in the 1960s he pointed at a particular cymbal and said, "I've still got that cymbal, but I don't use it on Stones' gigs, it's too good for them. I just use it on my jazz gigs." There's no doubt, that's the cymbal you hear on the first part of the 'Elvin Suite'.

The best bands have all had something that can't be forced: A refined mastery of music and a willingness to converse through music. That's what you hear, above all, on bassist Ben Williams' sophomore recording, Coming of Age: The sound of a musician who's cultivated an authentic rapport with some of the best young players in New York City.
We have these group texts that we send to each other all the time," Williams says of his band, Sound Effect. "We're just as entertaining to each other off stage as on. If there were ever a reality show about jazz, we'd be good candidates for it!"
Coming of Age for the 30-year-old Williams means playing a lively role among his peers and a vital part in the music world at large. After winning the prestigious Monk Institute Competition in 2009, Williams got busy turning his youthful promise into real achievement. "My career as a bandleader and composer started from the moment I won," he says. "I had this opportunity to say something-and an obligation, too." In 2011 Williams delivered a debut album, State Of Art, to great critical acclaim and toured widely as a bandleader with Sound Effect. He became a sought after and beloved sideman, playing so many sets at one year's Winter Jazzfest that he rarely left the stage. Most impressively, he assumed a highly-coveted place in guitarist Pat Metheny's Unity Band. "Ben has a fearless and open-minded approach to what music can be," Metheny has said. "A wonderful combination of skills."
For all his strides in bandleading and performing, on the track Coming of Age Williams shows his greatest growth as a composer. "Composing seems like a nebulous thing," he says. "But the ability to translate a feeling into actual music, takes a lot of doing it, a lot of practice. Which chord is going to invoke this feeling? What's the best key for this idea?" And Williams has some big ideas and feelings to convey, necessitating heavy skill in musical translation and storytelling. On "Toy Soldiers," for example, a martial rhythm and chantlike riff send a message about the sacrifices of war. He wrote the uplifting "Strength And Beauty" on the day of the 2012 Newtown school shooting.
"The tragic news hit me hard, and this tune came to me as a way of feeling my way through the tragedy. The title was inspired later, when I saw how [jazz saxophonist] Jimmy Greene and his family responded to losing their daughter at Newtown. Their pain is something most of us can't even imagine, but the way Jimmy held it together and became a beacon of light and true strength was an inspiration to everyone."
Williams takes a page from the Miles Davis school of bandleading by encouraging his band members to compose in the studio, too. For the R&B tribute anthem "Voice of Freedom (for Mandela)," Williams enlisted the smooth soulfulness of singer-songwriter Goapele-and then headed in to record the song with a characteristically open mind. In the studio, saxophonist Marcus Strickland contributed an on-the-spot horn arrangement with the sunny harmony of a South African choir.
As much as Williams writes in response to politics and current events, his compositions are a respectful celebration of the musical past, too. The driving samba rhythms of "Forecast" are an homage to the jazz fusion group Weather Report, with the tune's melody inspired by Wayne Shorter's "Over Shadow Hill Way." Williams's fluid fretless grooves on "Half Steppin'" recall Jaco Pastorius's "Teen Town."
Williams sees covers of pop tunes as a bestowal to the jazz canon. "I always like to contribute new repertoire to the jazz songbook," says Williams. "For me it's very important to shout out all the young, new songs coming out." His gift on this album is a moving instrumental version of Lianne La Havas' breakup ballad "Lost & Found." Guest trumpeter Christian Scott communicates the contained heartache of La Havas's song lyrics, with a lightly arranged string quartet adding the right amount of solace.
Coming of Age concludes with the sweeping title tune, a showcase for Williams's broad stylistic range. "I wanted 'Coming of Age' to feel big," he says. "I was thinking of it in movements, as a kind of mini-symphony." In the final section of "Coming of Age," Williams picks up a bow for the only time on the record, filtering the sound to other worldly but soulful effect. "The vibe I was going for at the end was Prince," Williams says. "I wanted it to feel sonically transformed, tripped out." It's an auspicious end to an accomplished sophomore recording, with Williams' bowed strings sauntering off into the stars to explore for the next album.
Whatever comes next for Ben Williams, it's sure to be as engaging as it is virtuosic. As an artist who's come of age, Williams' raw talent has evolved into musical grace, conviction, and power. He's a musician in meaningful dialogue with his band Sound Effect, with current events, with musical styles past and present, and finally, with his listeners.

With these soft spoken words on the simply-titled opening track-"Intro"- M83 mastermind Anthony Gonzalez introduces us to his sixth record and first double disc album, Hurry Up, We're Dreaming.
Dauntlessly singing into the void that was left behind since Saturdays=Youth, Gonzalez suddenly surges with overwhelming emotion as the music mounts an invisible precipice. Historically, he softly eased you into his world, introducing you to the lush and radiant spaces between captivating melodies and intimate lyrics, but not this time. Not on this record.
Graduating from the fuzzy, fumbling emotional cobwebs and draped ambiance of past records, Hurry Up, We're Dreaming careens past its audience. Brazenly stretching out along the horizon, spilling glittery, golden arms of sound across the landscape, it holds your breath hostage without you even noticing you were missing it. If it seemed that Anthony was basking in the sunshine-drenched days of his youth when he released Saturdays in 2008, then it can be said that in 2011, at the age of 30, he is tempestuously charging towards his future with Hurry Up, We're Dreaming.
Relocating to Los Angeles from Antibes, Gonzalez surrounded himself with players pivotal to completing his childhood dream of a double disc record. Producer Justin Meldal-Johnsen (Beck, NIN, The Mars Volta, Goldfrapp) and guitarist Brad Laner (from 90s band Medicine) had been hugely influential on Anthony growing up and now were central to the new record's creation.
"In France there is this show on TV where at the end there is a musical guest who plays one or two songs. I remember one night when I was a teenager being at home watching the best of performances and looking at this crazy bass player with a big afro and thinking, 'Wow this guy is so cool.' "And now I am working with him. It's so intense that thinking about it makes me feel weird. But it's weird in a super good way. Same thing with Brad, I was listening to his music when I was first getting into music and now he's on my album."
Anthony and Justin met backstage in 2009 at Scotland's T In The Park. Later, "he came to me very genuinely stating that 'he was a fan and that he would love to work with me,'" explains Gonzalez. "I love when people do that because I can tell it's coming from the heart. He was sincere and that's the way I like to work with people."
Stepping away from his work with producers Ken Thomas and Ewan Pearson on Saturday, Gonzalez freckles his new chapter with signature M83 fingerprints while pushing himself beyond the constricting emotions of a guarded musician. Bored with being frustrated and shy, Anthony is respectful of the precious time given to him and doesn't want to leave behind any regrets, thus thrusting himself into the spotlight vocally. He tests out different ways of singing, ranging from a spectral breathy whisper to a howling scream, and each voice clings to us like a dew-heavy spider web at dawn.
Fans will recognize band member Morgan Kibby, her vocals flirting with the shadowy places in between verses, leaping off the record in spoken word or blending with an adult choir. Morgan will join Anthony on tour but she was never meant to sing as much on this record as she had on pervious projects. Quenching his desire to work with a different person on each record, Gonzalez added LA-based chanteuse Zola Jesus to the mix for the completion of "Intro." "The song was already written but I really wanted a female vocal on it and I was kind of struggling to find the right person, but then I heard her music and it just made sense."
Where Saturday=Youth is drenched in lustful exploration and hungry adolescent wonder, Hurry Up is decadently cunning and seductive. "Intro" and "My tears are becoming a sea" eerily croon to you, swirling all of the glitter and growth from the past records into an epic swell, mysteriously and dramatically warning you of the impact you are about to experience. "Midnight City" (disc one) and "OK Pal" (disc two) are humid, adrenaline driven dreams unlike anything we have heard from M83 in the past. "Midnight City" adeptly sweeps you through abandoned concrete streets swimming in broken neon light and aggressively pushing and pulsating to synthetic beats. While "OK Pal" catcalls you to a locker full of mapped out Peter Gabriel-esque echoing lyrics, leaving you stranded in a post-apocalyptic landscape. These journeys are about awakening, craving and conquering. Throughout Hurry Up, We're Dreaming Anthony carries the listener to different countries of sound in his own universe, "We didn't need a story, we didn't need a real world. We just had to keep walking and we became the stories- we became the places." Drifting away from his previous records and reigned in politeness he unleashes all that he has been dreaming of and yearning for. Even when he takes a second to look back on "Echoes of Mine" the velvety, elderly voice of a woman heartbreakingly tells the story of a girl drenched in the shadows of her youth, knowing she has to grow up.
Grandiose in scale and inspired by Smashing Pumpkin's revered double disc Melancholy & The Infinite Sadness, Anthony has long had the goal to create his own monumental double disc record. "I saw when I was a teenager that I could dig into it [the album]. It was like a treasure. If I were a teenager nowadays I would try to find something as creative as this album. They had so much to say in their songs."
Impressed with the juxtaposing sun and moon artwork featured on Melancholy, Anthony focuses in on another natural duality: siblings. The cover artwork mirrors this relationship, featuring a photograph of a little boy with a little girl sitting on a bed. The photograph perpetuates the conversation for the two distinct voices we behind each disc, representing two sides of an overall piece that are almost the same. "I want people to listen to it as two different human beings that are connected somehow, but every song on the album has a secret on the other side."
Soaring and scraping up against the sky while sharing each uncharted frontier with new collaborators is what M83 does best. Gracefully coming into the next decade of his life, Anthony delivers what makes each record sincere, innocent, and full of joy: he gives us his past and his future.

The album mainly revolves around Roots' own production and voice, with contributions from Banana Klan stalwarts including Ricky Ranking, DJ MK and Daddy Kope. In addition, on three tracks Mr Manuva introduces talented young singer Rokhsan. Other guests include Skin and Cass Lewis from Skunk Anansie, Elan Tamara and Spikey T. Production, meanwhile, comes from as far afield as Australia, Rodney Smith's travels allowing him to meet beatmakers and producers all over the world.
Overall, though, the vision remains that of one man. Roots Manuva has honed his craft across four previous studio albums, picking up a MOBO, plus Brit and Mercury nominations along the way. This record, though, represents some of his freshest, most urgent work. Whether castigating politicians or himself, joking about girls or men in love with their computers, ruminating on the void at the heart of urban music or bigging himself up, crooning an apology or growling about loins, Roots Manuva remains one of the foremost lyricists and musicians of his generation.
The first taste from this epic is already out and about in the form of Watch Me Dance. A dirty little funk ditty with its origins in Ricky Ranking's earliest live performances with the Manuva band, Rodney demoed the track 18 months or so ago and then gave the parts to Toddla T to see what he could do with them. They both agreed that the results sounded more like a Toddla T track than a Roots Manuva track, so that version gave Toddla's new album its name, but Rodney's own version is also out and about. Keep It HidNonesuch Records releases Keep It Hid, the solo debut from singer/songwriter/guitarist Dan Auerbach, best known as half of The Black Keys. While working on and touring in support of The Black Keys most recent album, Attack & Release, Auerbach also was writing songs that would become Keep It Hid. This record is a mixture of things I like to listen to, psychedelia, soul music, country harmonies, says Auerbach. In February Auerbach will begin a national tour with performances in New York City, Boston and Washington, DC. Opening acts for the tour will include Those Darlins and Hacienda, the latter also lending support as Auerbachs backing band.
Keep It Hid was produced and engineered by Auerbach at his studio, Akron Analog and features him playing a variety of instruments, including drums, guitar, percussion and keyboards. Many of Auerbachs friends and family play on the album, including his uncle James Quine, who contributes vocal harmony and electric guitar on the track Street Walkin. Other musicians include fellow Ohioans Jessica Lea Mayfield, who sings on the track When the Night Comes, and Bob Cesare, who plays drums on Whispered Words, a song originally written by Auerbachs father. Of the recording process Auerbach states, I wanted a live, organic sound. Nothing was too plotted or planned, just a lot of spontaneity. The record was mixed by Auerbachs good friend Mark Neill at Neills Soil of the South studio.
With his Black Keys bandmate Patrick Carney, Auerbach has recorded five critically acclaimed full-length albums, beginning with 2002s The Big Come Up. In 2008, Attack & Release debuted on the Billboard Top 200 chart at #14, marking The Black Keys highest position to date. The New York Times called it a savage, bitter concoction built on a snarling punk-rock riff, while the Los Angeles Times called it without doubt the Keys most dynamic effort yet. Sundown Heaven Town (Deluxe)McGraw takes us back to that place with Sundown Heaven Town, his thirteenth studio album (and second release for Big Machine Records).
I picture a little town, like the one I grew up in, he says of the album's picturesque title. It's late in the afternoon. Sunset. Maybe some kids are playing baseball, and their family members are in the stands. You're at the point where the working week has given way to the weekend. That's my idea of sundown in heaven town.
Sundown Heaven Town pays tribute to those two decades, putting a new stamp on all of the sounds the revved-up country rockers, the nostalgic ballads, the down-home numbers that have made McGraw one of the best-selling country artists of the modern era.
From the banjo riff that kicks off the opening track, Overrated, to the digital percussion that pushes Lookin' for that Girl into pop-influence territory, Sundown Heaven Town mixes the old with the new, the rustic with the modern, the organic with the electric. It's a country record, in other words... with all the twists and turns we've come to expect from someone who's been at the top of the genre since 1994.
This album is very encompassing of everything that I've done in my career, McGraw explains. It's a good microcosm of what my 20 years in music has been. You can hear parts of my career throughout all these songs, as well as the future and where my music is headed.
Sundown Heaven Town also shines a light on the family, friends, and collaborators who've played roles in McGraw's career. His first cousin, Catherine Dunn, joins him on Diamonds Rings and Old Barstools, a classic-sounding country ballad about love on the rocks. His wife of 18 years, Faith Hill, lends her award-winning vocals to Meanwhile Back at Mama's, which doubles as the album's first chart-topper. Longtime friend Kid Rock makes an appearance, too, raising a rootsy ruckus on the bonus track Lincoln Continentals and Cadillacs.
I love being able to collaborate with great people, he says. To be in a place in your career where you can call up somebody like Keith Urban or Kid Rock and ask them to play or sing on a song with you, and they do it... How cool is that?
Several months before the album's release, McGraw launched the Sundown Heaven Town 2014 Tour, giving the singer a chance to perform some of the album's songs long before they hit stores. After spending countless summers on the road McGraw knew that his new songs deserved to be heard not only on the radio, or in a pair of fans' earbuds, but on stage. After all, there's an immediacy to Sundown's faster tunes, an anthemic vibe that owes just as much to the amphitheater as the honky tonk.
A family man and devoted husband, McGraw also shines a light on his softer side with tracks like Words are Medicine and Portland, Maine. He recorded his vocal parts for the latter song in just 10 minutes. The result is a wounded, wistful ballad, driven forward not by a drumbeat, but an acoustic guitar. McGraw may look larger than life while standing onstage... but when he sings about heartache, he sounds just as vulnerable as the rest of us. Maybe that's why he considers Portland, Maine one of the album's best songs, a difficult distinction to make on a record that spawned three hit singles before the album's release.
From start to finish, Sundown Heaven Town tips its cowboy hat to the traditions of country music, then tosses a some new ingredients into the mix. The result is a melting pot of everything Tim McGraw does best. It's a country album for 2014, anchored by a fondness for the genre and the desire to push it into uncharted territory. Petals Have FallenKieren Gallear aka DELS returns with his second album, "Petals Have Fallen," and makes the step up from potential contender to full scale champ. Delivering on the potential he displayed on his first album, "GOB," DELS has developed his own unique take on hip hop - intensely personal and poetic but also funny, scuzzy, raw and sonically adventurous. All the elements were there with his first record, but no one could have expected him to display them with such consistency, such delicacy and such supreme confidence. His explanation of the title of the record perfectly sums up Gallear's aesthetic, plus providing a handy definition of what it is to make art: "the urge to protect something precious that will ultimately fall apart." There's plenty that you could pick out individually from this record. From the sung opening of "Limbo" there are spine-tingling moments galore. The hard rhyming over an epic beat on "Fall Apart." The combination of Kerry Leatham's vocals, Bonobo's beat and DELS' wordplay on "Pulls." The free-rolling exuberance of "Pack of Wolves." The delicacy of "Petals Have Fallen." Plus, of course, re-works of the brilliant "Bird Milk" and "You Live In My Head," both of which were included on the "Bird Milk" EP last year and hammered by Zane Lowe, Annie Mac and Huw Stephens, amongst others. But just as impressive is the consistent feel of the record as an album, where moods and images and sonics develop and mutate but hold together as a whole. Some of this comes from the deployment of DELS' long-term collaborator, Kwes in the role of Executive Producer and "reducer."Only one of the tracks is produced solely by Kwes, with beats provided by Bonobo, Micachu (fresh from her triumph as the soundtracker for "Under the Skin"), Blue May, Eli-T and others. But Kwes and DELS took every track back to his studio to provide additional production and an overall feel to the whole album. Throw in guest performances by some of the most exciting singers in the UK today (Kerry Leatham, Rosie Lowe, Tirzah, Bila and Elan Tamara) and you have a palette which has been extended even further. More even than any of that is the leap in DELS' own abilities. Put simply, Gallear has developed the confidence to be exactly and only himself - at times sensitive and romantic, at others sarcastic and funny, even ready to take the piss out of himself: "Some say I'm anxious/ I just think I need to eat cheese less." Gallear has talked about how he uses visuals as well as music to inspire his writing and "Petals Have Fallen" is a record which you almost see as much as hear, one in which moments in time are suspended in images like prehistoric insects in amber. Already hotly-tipped as an MC and carving out a successful career as a designer and video director, DELS brings together all his interests and talents on this, a stand out album, which delivers and then some on The Times' verdict that he is "the future of UK hip hop."1. We're All Alright! (Deluxe)Cheap Trick has announced the release of a new album, We're All Alright. Named in tribute to the band's 1978 hit Surrender, the album is the follow-up to last year's Bang, Zoom, Crazy... Hello, voted the 12th best album of last year by Classic Rock.
The band has also released a new song, Long Time Coming. Its riff bears more than a passing resemblance to The Kinks' classic All Day And All Of The Night, and it features the kind of keyboard motif that underpinned so many of the band's classic hits. It's our interpretation of Slade and MC5 and AC/DC and Aerosmith, Rick Nielson tells Billboard, but they're not steals. It's just, like, all the bands we like.
Y'know, we always write, but it's more fun to write for a project and write for a reason, he says. We have a company (Big Machine Records) that believes in us and they like the work and they're letting us make more records, which is cool. Making records is one of the ambitions we've always had. I don't think the desire has ever gone away.
We're All Alright was co-produced by the band Julian Raymond, and will be available in Standard and Deluxe Editions. The latter including three additional bonus tracks, among them a cover of The Move's 1968 hit Blackberry Way.

June GloomBig Deal might have become synonymous with the structurally sparse yet emotionally stinging guitar pop as showcased on their critically acclaimed debut "Lights Out", but get ready for a dramatic expansion of sound with their latest album "June Gloom". The London based duo of Kacey Underwood and Alice Costelloe, aka Big Deal, are set to release the new album on Mute in Summer 2013.
Last year's thunderous teaser 'teradactol' track, with its monstrous riffs and galloping drums was no red herring: on "June Gloom" Underwood and Costelloe flesh out their delicate, nocturnal tones with the help of a full band. Here, you'll find a re-imagination of the golden age of alternative-rock; crunching grunge pop anthems sitting neatly alongside shimmering love songs aching with weariness and longing. If Big Deal's earlier tracks felt emotionally lacerating, this new body of work is noisy, boisterous, with a more than assured melodic hook.
This evolution is made defiantly clear in the opener 'golden light', which deliberately wrongfoots the listener by opening with some sweetly strummed chords and interlocking vocals before building to a rousing climax. Similarly, 'dream machines' crests on a jagged undertow of pounding drums, and the sinister 'pillow' gradually opens up to become something vast, scorched and desolate. The pair infuse the volume with their own inimitable, off-kilter take on angst-ridden emotional terrain; on the aptly titled 'pristine', they sing, "darkness wash over me, I let it in, it let me be", while on the otherwise upbeat 'call and i'll come' Costelloe plaintively asks, "What if no one else compares/ what if no one else cares?".
It all reaches a beautiful crescendo with the finale 'close your eyes', which explodes from an almost unbearably intimate confessional ("I won't ask why/ if it was love/ we let it die") into a coruscating maelstrom that is as indelibly affecting as it is thrilling. With "June Gloom", Big Deal have expanded their sonic palette for sure, but they have certainly lost none of their potency.1 golden light
