    Souls Of Black

Souls Of Black is the fourth studio album by American Thrash Metal band Testament. The album was released in 1990. It preceded several changes in style to rather diverse styles of Metal, including the traditional Heavy Metal sound heard in its succeeding album, The Ritual. In order to promote Souls of Black, Testament supported Megadeth, Slayer and Suicidal Tendencies in Europe on the Clash of the Titans tour.

Souls of Black is also seen as an influential guitar album, being ranked number nine on Guitar World magazine's top ten list of guitar albums of 1990.

    Slaves To The Grave

Slaves to the Grave is the last will and testament of the Dallas/Ft Worth band who influenced artists from Nine Inch Nails to Slipknot, and features members of GWAR, Ministry, Warbeast, Revolting Cocks and Lard. Fated for release, the recording sessions wrapped just days before the tragic loss of guitarist Mike Scaccia, who suffered a massive heart attack and collapsed while performing on stage. Rigor Mortis hit the national scene in 1987 as the first underground Heavy Metal band to sign to a major label. Their 1988 debut record, RIGOR MORTIS (Capitol), has since become legendary in the thrash/speed metal community, influencing bands like Toxic Holocaust and Goatwhore, and motivating Ministry to leave the disco for the Metal arena. Ministry would, in turn, influence everything from Nine Inch Nails to Marilyn Manson and Slipknot. The members would remain friends through thick and thin throughout the years, and in 2012 the pieces finally came together. Rigor Mortis entered the studio to record what was to be their comeback record. Older, wiser and good with their personal lives Rigor Mortis had finally come full circle. Then, on December 22nd, 2012, it all came to a halt. While playing their home town club in Ft. Worth in celebration of singer Bruce Corbitt's 50th birthday, midway through the set Mike Scaccia suffered a massive heart attack and collapsed on stage. He could not be revived and was pronounced dead shortly after midnight. Rigor Mortis was over. Though never discussed, all knew there was no Rigor Mortis without Mike, but the album was recorded and almost finished. As fate would have it, just days before he died Mike went into the studio and put the finishing touches on all of his parts, effectively enabling the guys to finish the record, knowing that Scaccia was happy with it. They endeavored every step of the way to do justice to the Rigor Mortis legacy, and bring honor to Mike Scaccia's last recorded testament. We think he would be proud.

The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me (Black Vinyl)

    Black Vinyl Version

When Brand New released Deja Entendu in mid-2003, it caught a lot of their fans off guard. It found the band taking a stylistic leap forward from the clever (albeit cookie-cutter) pop-punk of their 2001 debut, exploring expanded sonic textures and indie rock overtones, their urgent choruses tempered by acoustic musings and softer introspections. It all seemed very deliberate yet completely natural all the same, and the record was an underground smash. Something even more substantial was definitely brewing beneath the band's emo façade, and as a result, Brand New's follow-up was hotly anticipated for the three years it took the band to release it. The resulting The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me is the completion of their pop-punk molting process and one of the best surprises -- that isn't really a surprise at all -- to come out of 2006. Even when they were playing straightforward pop-punk ditties, Brand New had an edge to them that made them seem smarter than their peers; now they sound even older and stronger (and like they've been listening to a lot of '90s college and indie rock). This record is dark and dense, yet accessible, a shadowy air permeating every crevice where Jesse Lacey's plaintive and often tortured lyrics aren't already residing. He draws listeners in with vulnerable ruminations and questions of love, death, self, and religion, and his vocal inflections bring as much meaning to the table as his carefully chosen words. The opening Sowing Season ebbs and flows steadily, moving along under light guitar before exploding with percussion, Lacey ably switching from a hushed delivery into an anguished cry of emotion before falling back down again effortlessly. With it, Brand New sets up the somber intensity of the record straightaway. Textural and sonic layers unfold at every turn -- punching drums and trembling guitars here, aching vocals and subtle touches of string there -- and the album moves with a directed force that seems so naturally powerful and uncontrived, it's almost ridiculous to think that the band cut its teeth with poppy anthems like Jude Law and a Summer Abroad. The Devil and God is not an album of hooks; the excellent percussive stomp of The Archers Bows Have Broken is the most immediate here, but songs get stuck in the brain nonetheless and demand repeated spins. Old fans especially smitten by Deja's Play Crack the Sky have no excuse not to love everything about this record, as even lengthy tracks (like the near-eight-minute Limousine or the chill-inducing beauty of Jesus) are completely compelling. People who were ready to discount Brand New into the emo/TRL heap of the 2000s better rethink their stance; Brand New seems to know exactly what they're doing and this record is a testament to their ability to stay true to themselves. Whether they want to stay underground or fully break into the mainstream, this album has the potential to do either. Either way it doesn't really matter -- whatever happens, there's no denying how excellent this record is.

    Master Of Puppets

Ranked 167/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

One of the defining albums of thrash metal, the 1986 album Master of Puppets is arguably Metallica's best as well as their last with bassist Cliff Burton. Focusing on the concept of power and abuses thereof, this is a collection of complex, intelligent music, played at about a hundred miles an hour. The striding Battery, the darkly lit Welcome Home (Sanitarium), as well as the complex instrumental, Orion, all gave powerful testament to the band's ever-developing skill and vision. An album with lengthly arrangements (three songs came in at over eight minutes) and an overall eight song onslaught that clocks in at over an hour was unheard of in metal at the time and it confirmed that Metallica was at a different level, a legendary one!

    Brotherhood Of The Snake

The forbearers of thrash resemble a Lovecraftian brotherhood. They're the elder gods who set everything in motion for generations to imitate, while still ruling the roost from on high. Testament stand proudly among the same vanguard that boasted "The Big 4" and beyond.

For over three decades, the Bay Area quintet-Chuck Billy [vocals], Eric Peterson [guitar], Alex Skolnick [guitar], Steve DiGiorgio [bass], and Gene Hoglan [drums]-has consistently delivered unadulterated, unbridled, and unbreakable metal in its purest form without compromise or any signs of slowing down. Over the course of seminal releases ranging from The Legacy and Practice What You Preach to The Gathering and The Formation of Damnation, which won "Best Album" at Metal Hammer's 2008 Golden Gods Awards, the group's sales exceeded 14 million worldwide with 2 million in the U.S. alone. Most recently, 2012's critically praised Dark Roots of Earth assaulted the charts, moving over 20,000 first-week copies and seizing #12 on the Billboard Top 200, the band's highest U.S. chart bow ever. However, in 2016, Testament returns with more teeth than ever on Brotherhood of the Snake [Nuclear Blast]. "The first record is always classic because you form the band, you're totally into it, you go through the club scene, find yourself, and write your initial album over multiple years," explains Eric. "Then, you get signed and end up in a cycle. We took some time to do Brotherhood of the Snake, and it shows. Different influences came in. Normally, there are a few straight ahead thrash songs. We haven't had this many thrash tracks since The Legacy. It's a new era."

"I view Testament like I did when we started," adds Chuck. "I've been fortunate to be doing this for over 30 years. It means a lot. We're just going to continue doing what we do." Following a whirlwind of touring in support of Dark Roots of Earth, the guys began individually writing in late 2013. In between a rigorous tour schedule, new music organically assembled. During the spring of 2016, they hit the studio with Juan Urteaga [Machine Head, Exodus] and quickly cut the album's 10 tracks.

"Having separate periods to write set it apart," Eric continues. "Everybody played hard. Chuck really surprised me and belted out stuff that's more melodic over the heavy speed metal riffs. It blended really well together." "It does flow," Chuck agrees. "There's a lot of musicianship going on there, and I was finding hooks in the moment. I was able to feel it and just go."

The record commences on a deadly note with the title track. A whiplash-inducing riff catapults Chuck's unmistakable growl forward before snapping into mind-numbing leads. It's a brutal breakneck basher on par with the band's best. "It was actually one of the first songs we put together," says the singer. "Once we heard it mixed, we were all like, 'Wow, we have the direction we're going in. It's really heavy.'"

Elsewhere on the record, "The Pale King" gallops ahead on an apocalyptic barrage of drums and guitars before culminating on an unshakable chant. "It was really natural," smiles Eric. "It has that old school vibe, but this new energy to it. It never lets up. I love that!" Brotherhood of the Snake concludes on the crushing yet cinematic "The Number Game," which evinces Chuck's knack for a vivid lyrical story.

"I actually wrote it with Steve 'Zetro' Souza," he recalls. "I had that chorus, and it was one of those things where it had to be repeated. It's 14 days and 14 nights where this guy's on a killing spree. He does a countdown, and your life is based on the number you are. It was trip."

A fascinating concept rears its head during many of Brotherhood of the Snake's key moments, nodding to the mythical race from which the record it shares a name. "There's a connection between the alien world and religion, and the whole storyline came from it," explains Chuck. "There's a story of a Sumerian race 6,000 years ago that went on crusades to basically dethrone religions. The earth was basically the place where their leader, The Pale King, set people to be imprisoned and mine for gold. It got the ball rolling."

Ultimately, this Brotherhood remains as powerful as ever. "If a Testament fan knows our history or has followed our last couple of records, they'll hear the progression," the front man leaves off. "Everything is right there and in-your-face. That's the way it should be with us."

    Rachmaninoff: Symphonic Dances

Sergei Rachmaninoff was one of the most beloved composers of the 2oth century. His music is redolent of his Russian homeland, and it sings long, lush melodies that define the term romantic. Everyone who knows and loves his piano concertos will enjoy these lyrical and dynamic works for orchestra. The Symphonic Dances in recent years have become one of Rachmaninoffs most-performed scores. Vocalise is one of the great classical melodies, and is hummable by everyone. Grammy nominated in 2003 for Best Engineered Album - Classical; Keith O. Johnson, engineer.

This may be some of the best sound Keith Johnson has ever gotten out of Symphony Hall in Minneapolis, and certainly Oue's most convincing work with the Minnesota players, who sound for all the world more like the Philadelphia than that orchestra does these days. How Johnson got that huge climax at the end of the Dances cleanly onto tape transcends engineering and goes into the realm of magic. - Harry Pearson, The Absolute Sound

No one can approach Reference Recordings' unparalleled sound in this music. The sweet liquid presence of the high end, especially the critical massed strings, approaches perfection when it blends with RR's characteristic ambient soundstage, fine inner detail and bass impact. - Arthur B. Lintgen, The Absolute Sound

Even by the exalted standards one has come to expect from Reference Recordings, this is something extraordinary. This is the kind of recording that gives one renewed faith in the possibility of reproducing the power and beauty of an orchestra in a home environment, the kind of thing that makes audio worthwhile. Not to be missed. - Robert E. Greene, The Absolute Sound

The recording is once again absolutely stunning, brilliant and plushy at the same time, unequaled by another label in this piece. Peter Aczel, The Audio Critic

Overall, the sound is the best Ive ever heard from Reference Recordings. That also means that overall theres none better that you can currrently purchase. You don't need any more details, just trust me and run out and buy it. Karl Lozier, www.enjoythemusic.com

Once again, Keith Johnson has raised the bar of excellence in the recording of a symphony orchestra. It's a fabulous recording and a super performance of the Symphonic Dances, and a testament to the brilliance of Keith Johnson and his associates. - Anthony Kershaw, Audiophilia.com

    Ashes of the Wake

Violence begins to mend what was broken, is not only a lyric taken from Lamb of God's song Omerta, it's a theme that's emblazoned throughout Ashes of the Wake both in message and music, inspired as much by personal trial as by world politics. Lamb of God showcases their 80's thrash roots on Ashes of the Wake by featuring solos from both Testament and Megadeth. At the same time the band plows forward here sampling from the new, the old and adding their own menacing footprint.

    Let Me Get By

Let Me Get By features ten new, original songs that together stand as a testament to the hard work, independent spirit, and full-on commitment of the entire Tedeschi Trucks Band. The album's artwork-a Mongolian golden eagle caught a moment after flying from its handler's glove-and even the album title itself reflect the sense of total dedication that serves as the driving force behind TTB.

Some songs you may have heard on stage in 2015, and some others that were deliberately held back for this occasion. Susan's vocals and Derek's guitar soar, tumble and glide through each song, as powerful as ever, even in the album's most understated moments. --tedeschitrucksband

Features Gioconda De Vito On Violin And Edwin Fischer On Piano

Gioconda De Vito was an Italian violinist born on July 22, 1907. She began formal violin lessons with an uncle, who was a professional violinist, at the age of 8. Three years later, she entered the Pesaro Conservatory. She graduated two years after that and started her career as a soloist. By age 17, she was teaching at the Conservatory in Bari. At age 25, she won an international violin competition in Vienna. She was then hired (supposedly through the influence of Mussolini) to teach at the Academy of Santa Cecilia in Rome. Since the Second World War interrupted her solo career, her London debut, which was very successful, didn't happen until 1948. She subsequently performed frequently in the major European venues, sometimes appearing with other important artists, including Yehudi Menuhin, Isaac Stern, Rafael Kubelik, and Furtwangler. She also twice played for the Pope (Pius XII). De Vito was one of several famous female violinists of the early Twentieth Century who were quickly forgotten by the general public - Ginette Neveu and Janine Andrade were two others. In 1961, she retired from playing and virtually from the violin itself. She was then only 54 years old. Although she toured Europe and other countries (Australia, Russia, India, Israel), she never played in the U.S. A highly admired player, she was nevertheless, almost an anachronism during her career. Her repertoire was old fashioned and did not include the concertos of Stravinsky, Prokofiev, Sibelius, Elgar, Bartok, Barber, Shostakovich, Khachaturian, Korngold, Glazunov, Berg, Walton, or Szymanowski. It is said that she was such a meticulous player, that she worked on the Brahms concerto for fifteen years before she played it in public.

Beethoven: Violin Concerto In D, Op. 61/ Kogan

    Full Analog Mono Production

Recorded June 29 and 30, 1957, originally by EMI Music France. Leonid Borisovich Kogan was born on Nov. 14, 1924, in the Ukraine. His father played the violin as an amateur and the sound so fascinated the boy that by age 3 he would not go to sleep unless he had the fiddle beside him. After age 5 he began taking lessons on the instrument. He made his first public appearance playing, at age 10. His official concert debut came playing the Brahams Concerto with the Moscow Philharmonic in 1941. For the celebrated violinist, his interpretation of the Beethoven Concerto was one of the glories of his era; none of his contemporaries played it with such consistent stylistic command or such intellectual and spiritual penetration.

Considering how Holy Other has always chosen to avoid the spotlight, refusing to do most interviews and photo shoots as a general rule, it's a testament to the power of his music how much the Manchester born producer's profile has risen in the past 12 months, garnering amazing support from a wide array of respected individuals.

    Viva

Viva is the second release from Klaus Dinger's post-Neu! group, La Dusseldorf. Originally released in 1978, Viva is a stunning combination of washed out synthesizers, swirling guitar work and Dinger's trademark motorik rhythms. Featuring the classic Cha, Cha 2000, Viva is another fine effort from one of Krautrock's legends and stands as a testament of just how gloriously ahead of their time the German progressive rock scene of the '70s really was. An essential record.

    Welcome To The Welcome Wagon

This debut unveils a ramshackle sing-along enterprise of a Presbyterian pastor and his wife who wrestle out the influences of folk music, religion, pop culture, and church tradition in a collection of soulful and good-humored songs. It consolidates sacred song traditions (old Testament psalms, 17th century Presbyterian psalters), iconoclastic '60s pop innovators (The Velvet Underground), '70s charismatic Catholics (Lenny Smith), and '80s melancholy lovelorn pop (The Smiths). Recorded, produced, and arranged by Sufjan Stevens.

    Trump Harm

Moving into their 7th full-length, Trump Harm, 31Knots are a living testament to the advantages of staying true to yourself over fleeting flash-in-the-pan glamour in an age of instant gratification. More than anything else, the sound of Trump Harm is yet another fresh take on the band's unique brand of jagged yet melodic, gritty yet graceful, grandiose punk rock. With swift directional changes, abrupt stops, and inertia-defying starts, 31Knots executes each teetering musical jerk and halt and subsequent somersault with jawdropping agility.

    Soul Rebel

Exact repro reissue, originally released in 1970. A mixture of love songs and pure, unadulterated rebel music, Soul Rebels was the most personal and revealing set of Wailers' songs to appear on album. Recorded at the famed Randy's studio, these songs still sound entirely fresh today more than thirty years after being recorded. A testament to the Wailers' harmonic brilliance and strong songwriting skills, plus Lee Perry's creative vision and the rock-solid backing of his Upsetters.

Is Jesse Harper (Discontinued) (On Sale)

This is an archival release sure to resonate with fans of Jimi Hendrix. The late 1960s were ripe with altered senses, and sensory induced - and inducing - guitar heroes taking their instruments to newfound sonic freedom. Is Jesse Harper is a perfectly realized testament from that era, a record that bubbles psychedelically with shuffling beats and active bass, ultimately defined by a fuzzy haze of dripping guitar leads back dropped against strident and arpeggiated riffs, chords, and slabs of rhythm.
