    A Musical Family

The TD 206 and TD 209 turntables are the younger siblings of the revolutionary, multiple-award-winning TD 309. However, they don't have to live in the shadow of their older brother. Both models are built using only high-quality materials and parts. And both share a number of technical features with the TD 309, ensuring that their replay quality is up there with the best.

The new TP 90 tonearm is based on the tried-and-tested TP 92 and uses the same ultra-low-friction, high-performance bearing and the innovative zero-stiction anti-bias system. The arm tube is made from rolled aluminium that is damped using RMR technology (reduced-modal-resonance), and the stainless-steel counterweight at the end of the arm tube is double-decoupled. Tonearm height, azimuth and overhang are useradjustable.

Designed And Developed In The USA, The Ikura Represents A Distinct Visual And Technical Design Departure For Music Hall

For the first time, music hall collaborated with an outside industrial design firm to develop and complete the project. The foundation of ikura's design remains the unique two-piece split-plinth design originated by music hall and the final product is the result of a dynamic design partnership between Doing & Done, headed by designer James Kyroudis, and music hall.

The mdf (medium density fiberboard) platter and felt mat sit on a high quality, stainless steel ball bearing sheathed in Teflon providing fluid and noise-free operation. The bearing assembly comes pre-charged with lubricant.

The effective length of the tonearm is nine inches. This allows for a very shallow tracking arc on the record thus reducing distortion and record wear. The tonearm comes mounted with a high quality moving magnet cartridge and features Swiss made ABEC 7 stainless steel bearings.

Each element of the ikura was carefully selected to provide you with the highest level of performance and sound quality. Used properly, the ikura will provide you with years of musical enjoyment.

The Music Hall Ikura turntable is a 2-speed, belt driven turntable with many singular features. Starting with Music Hall's hallmark two-piece split-plinth design. The plinths are isolated and separated by three vulcanized rubber cones. Three adjustable conical feet, a 2-speed dc synchronous motor, power switch, wiring and electrical parts are all mounted on the bottom plinth while the critical sound reproducing components; the main bearing, arm and cartridge are mounted on the top plinth.

21st Century Vinyl: Michael Fremer's Practical Guide to Turntable Set-Up

Stereophile magazine senior contributing editor and analog expert Michael Fremer presents his almost three hour long Practical Guide to Turntable Set-Up. Fremer sets up three popular turntables from Pro-Ject, Rega and VPI. Using the hands-on phono cartridge installation techniques, tips and basic principles demonstrated with close-ups and flash animation, any turntable from the popular Technics SL-1200 to the most esoteric can be set up to perfection. Also included: an interview with famed Sterling Sound mastering engineer George Marino, and a 20 page PDF file embedded in the disc's DVD-ROM section that includes even more detailed technical descriptions and an article on record cleaning no vinyl fan should be without. Despite the seemingly dry subject matter, the disc is entertaining. There are even some laughs as Fremer once did stand up comedy (he played legendary Max's Kansas City and even opened for bands like Television and The Jam).

The Classic combines the best of modern technical design with a timeless aesthetic that hearkens back to turntables of years past.

Unlike other throw-back designs that rely solely on clichÉ "retro cool" styling to sell, The Classic is also a technical tour de force. Featuring a new 9" carbon fiber and aluminum composite tonearm, a completely new sub-chassis design, and a set of sophisticated isolation feet, The Classic offers a level performance the distantly-related turntables of analog's golden age could only dream of.

Don't just take our word for it, though - EISA (the European Imaging and Sound Association) has already bestowed The Classic with their prestigious "Best Turntable Award" for 2017.

The Classic arrives this month in three beautiful matte wood finishes: walnut, rosenut (walnut with a tasteful red tint), and eucalyptus. Turntable includes a hinged acrylic dustcover and an Ortofon 2M Silver moving magnet cartridge.

With the creation and introduction of the Avenger and Avenger reference we found there was a large gap between the products in price range. To accommodate those looking for a step up from the Avenger but not ready to take go all in for the Avenger Reference, the Avenger Plus is exactly what it describes. An Avenger "plus" some solid upgrades that make it a step up from the standard Avenger. Using the technically from our behemoth Titan turntable, we have added the Harry Weisfeld Signature Rim Drive motor assembly. With improved engineering to make it easier to use than ever with an adjustable knob to move the rim drive mechanism which is driven by the included Analog Drive System. Additionally the tonearm is getting a step up with the JMW 12-3DR with Nordost Reference wire as well as a periphery ring clamp.

The VPI Avenger chassis is three layers of bonded acrylic/aluminum/acrylic, with damping material between layers, locked in by 3 isolation steel corner posts, 3 bolts, and the massive bearing assembly. The corner posts which hold the tonearms (up to three will fit) have adjustable machined knobs giving the user the ability to easily raise and lower the height to level the table. Fully adjustable armboards are made from 5/5" 6061 aluminum for rigidity and grounding. The table can mount up to three arms, any manufacture's brand, and any length!

    The Rega RP10 skeletal turntable.

Rega is extremely pleased to announce the launch of the much awaited RP10.

Rega's design philosophy extends further than ever before with advanced components built around our radical new plinth design. Featuring the brand new RB2000 tonearm, a ceramic flywheel effect platter and the custom RP10 power supply (allowing total control and accuracy over both motor vibration and speed performance) guarantee the highest level of performance from a Rega turntable to date.

The RP10 will also be available with its perfect partner, the Apheta moving coil cartridge, factory fitted as a package option.

    The Evolution of Revolution

Evolution is a well proven and documented process in many areas of our lives. This applies in particular to design engineers and machines. Over the past forty years our cars have become more reliable and economical whilst we take for granted the reliability and speed of modern aircraft. Rega is no exception to evolution. Rega's experience and previous achievements allow us to continually develop and produce better products.

The RP10 represents probably the biggest step forward in the evolution of Roy Gandy's turntable design philosophies. Low mass, high rigidity plinths combined with electronically controlled low vibration motors, high flywheel effect platters and lower mass higher stability tonearms.

    RP10 Custom power supply

Housed in Rega's custom design case is a brand new advanced anti vibration and speed control circuit dedicated to running the 24v low noise motor. The speed and control of the motor is achieved by using a new DSP (digital signal processing) generator built upon a high stability crystal. The device will divide the accurate square wave from the crystal to the exact frequency required to turn the platter at the selected speed. The DSP core will also generate a near perfect sinusoidal waveform to power the motor. Factory set vibration and speed adjustments are then made to the power supply to tune the motor for optimal performance.

The entire tonearm structure is designed to have the minimum of mechanical joints whilst using the stiffest materials in all critical areas. The tolerance of the RB2000 tonearm is so tight that no adhesive is used at any point throughout the construction. A brand new low mass, precision engineered, vertical bearing assembly has been manufactured to further compliment the inherent design philosophy of the RP10 turntable.

The RB2000 uses the latest award winning Rega arm tube. Each one which is meticulously hand polished (keeping mass to an absolute minimum) and has been completely redesigned to redistribute mass and further reduce stresses and resonances. This advanced design tube increases the stiffness and rigidity of the overall assembly whilst reducing stress on the bearings even further.

Magnesium and Phenolic - Dual bracing

A super lightweight plinth combined with a double brace mounted specifically where the increased rigidity is required (between the tonearm mounting and the main hub bearing) forms a structurally sound "stressed beam" assembly. This design prevents energy absorption and unwanted resonances which will add un-natural distortions to the music. The RP10 takes our double brace technology to the next level. Not content with an unprecedented stiffness to mass ratio, Rega have obsessively reduced any resonant properties by using two different materials for the new stressed beam. The top layer is magnesium and the bottom layer is pheno-lic (two of the lightest and stiffest materials available). Incorporating two different materials into the brace structure lowers their ability to pick up unwanted airborne vibrations. Simply put, different materials have different natural resonances. By using two different materials together they decrease the natural frequency of each other by self damping.

    Super flywheel effect ceramic platter

The RP10 uses a custom ceramic flywheel effect platter. The platter is produced from ceramic oxide powder which is compressed, fired and diamond cut to ensure perfect accuracy and flatness across the surface. The new platter features a modified construction over the previous P9 version with improved coupling to the sub platter.

    24V Low noise motor

The motor is a high specification, 24V twin phase synchronous unit. It is controlled by Rega's unique and innovative RP10-PSU power supply. The motor drives the CNC machined pulley, sub platter and hub-bearing assembly via the twin belt drive. Each motor is individually hand tuned to its own custom power supply in the factory to minimise vibration, motor noise and ensure optimum performance.

Skeletal plinth design with polyolefin foam core

Controversially Rega has always researched methods of producing light but stiff and rigid plinths. The technology is simple: unwanted noise at microscopic levels is developed by the turntable motor and main bearing. The plinth can also pick up airborne vibration from the music. From the beginning in the 1970's Rega pioneered the use of a stressed skin structure for the plinth. This uses two layers of phenolic resin with a lightweight particle or fibre board sandwiched between the skins. This technique has been used in many applications where stiff, light structures are needed such as an aircraft wing or a Formula 1 chassis.

The current increase in interest in turntables has allowed Rega to research and develop higher technology structures for the customer who is happy pay a little more for higher sound quality. The all new RP10 turntable utilises a unique new stressed skin structure produced from thin phenolic skins sandwiching a featherweight nitrogen expanded, closed cell, polyolefin foam core. This material has been developed exclusively for Rega over a three year period. The RP10 plinth is 7 times lighter than the weight of the original Planar 3 plinth. Rega has added even more stiffness in the crucial area between the arm and the main bearing.

De-coupled outer frame and dust cover

A common problem for many skeletal design turntables is the inability to incorporate an effective dust cover into the design. We have constructed an outer frame that minimises contact between the inner and outer plinth. The only points of contact are three location devices on the feet which centralises the inner and outer plinths perfectly. This makes set-up extremely easy and allows the use of a dust cover. The RP10 can be used without the outer frame if so desired.

    Turntable design & mythology

Today there are many approaches to Hi-Fi design which follow established and informed engineering or electronic principles. Amplifier and loudspeaker design has been well documented over the years with excellent technical publications. These subjects have been based on tried and tested acoustic criteria and many computer software programs now exist that enable a near amateur to design a passable working loudspeaker based on known acoustic and mathematical parameters.

Enter turntable design: When it comes to turntable design we are limited to a few poorly informed articles describing only very limited aspects of design. This is a subject full of mythology. Designers propose theories that counter the basic laws of physics, use terminology that doesn't actually exist in the engineering world, build products that are more like beautiful sculptures than acoustic reproduction machines and sell items costing tens of thousands of pounds that hardly function as intended and often fail to work at all.

For instance a very common myth is "the heavier the better" concept. Turntable bases weighing tens of kilograms are not uncommon. The reality is that the base actually needs to be as light as possible to prevent unwanted bearing and motor noise being transferred to the turntable or record. Platters also fall under a similar myth with many platter designs becoming so heavy that it is impossible to design a correctly functioning bearing (and some so light that anyone can hear the speed inconsistency). The turntable platter itself needs to be of enough weight to spin at a constant speed within the confines of the chosen bearing and motor drive system.

Many amateur designers in any field choose one component in a design and try to achieve an extreme in size, weight and quality. They believe that by taking one theory to its extreme the design will become "perfect". The reality of all engineering, design (and life) is that perfection is not possible. Based on this reality, Rega's goal has always been to optimise a mixture of numerous "correct compromises" thus bringing the designer nearer to the unachievable goal of perfection.

The story behind the Valve Isis

Rega's now legendary head electronics engineer Terry Bateman spent 10 years researching the concept of a CD player using valves in the output amplifier.

When it came to the inspiration for this project Terry drew on the enormous experience he gained while working with musical instrument valve amplification, which dates back to the middle part of the 1970's. Terry's concept was based on the need to have a playback chain, which is in harmony with the instruments and equipment being used.

Valves have been widely used in musical instrument and recording amplification from the 1950's to the present day, therefore it made great sense to develop a valve based CD player to match that of the signal chain found in such applications. This approach kept the circuit straightforward, this is mainly because musical instrument amplification is not excessively hindered by some of the folklore surrounding certain aspects of valve audio design. He took the approach of combining the technical and sonic attributes of valves in a differential instrumentation amplifier circuit driven from differential output DAC with a passive LC filter.

Careful choice of valves and the use of moderate levels of feedback keep the distortion at reasonable levels thus keeping the colouration to a minimum. The valve Isis became fully realised when he combined the valve project with the Wolfson high performance differential output WM8741 DAC along with the digital playback circuitry of its solid state stable mate.

    Design

The valve Isis shares the same digital and USB sections as found in the solid state version however the analogue stage is valve based with passive filtering. This stage uses two military specification triple mica 5814A (ECC82/12AU7) triodes being driven by the revolutionary Wolfson WM8741 ultra high performance digital to analogue converter.

The output buffer and transformer driver stage uses two ECC88 (6DJ8/6922) triodes. This, like its solid-state stable mate, is of an un-orthodox design. The design goal with this player was to keep away from the normal design approach of lets run it through a valve to make it sound warm, but take advantage of industrial valve circuits to make an articulate and competent valve based CD player. Careful choice has been made for every component in the digital and the analogue signal path to ensure the integrity of the signal.

Careful design of the PCB's ensures isolation of not just the digital and analogue sections, but also the motor, display and user interface processor. All sonically critical electrolytic capacitors have been by-passed with polypropylene or polyester film capacitors. In addition to this, large value electrolytic capacitors have also been by-passed with audio grade electrolytic capacitors. Power supply impedances in the digital to analogue converter are kept very low by the use of solid polymer capacitors. All power supplies utilise custom Rega K-Power smoothing capacitors, and fast diodes have been used throughout in power supply rectification.

The Isis uses enhanced and optimised control code for the control of the CD processor and user display; this will speed up the initialisation process by means of a tighter control interface between the user micro and CD processor.

    Technology

The differential output of the digital to analogue converter drives a valve differential (operational) amplifier, with a very modest amount of feedback to stabilise the operating conditions. The 5814A based differential amplifier, with a solid-state current generator in its tail, takes full advantage of the differential output from the digital to analogue converter. This is followed by a passive Butterworth second order LC filter. Finally, this signal is buffered using a low anode resistance ECC88 to drive the output and balancing transformer.

In design it was felt that unnecessarily high levels of THD would unduly overwhelm the qualities of the digital stage of the Isis. The overall THD is typically 0.06% being prominently even order, where the 2nd harmonic predominates. This will give the sonic dynamics of the valves without dominating the sonic qualities of the digital section.

After many hours of tube rolling we found the 5814A differential amplifier position was best on the grounds of micro-phonics, reliable operation and sonic qualities. Both the HT & LT power supplies are fully regulated and use the same power supply parts as used in the solid state Isis. Like the solid-state analogue stage valve Isis has it's own dedicated 50VA mains transformer, ensuring galvanic isolation between the digital and analogue sections of the player.

The Isis has an isolated balanced output, and in keeping with the spirit of the valve circuit topology we have opted to use a transformer in this position. This balancing transformer is made to the same exacting standards to that found in the IOS MC amplifier.

We hope that you enjoy this product as much as we have enjoyed creating it. - Rega

All these features amalgamate to create the supreme level of performance found in the Isis and provide a perfect partner for the Rega Osiris amplifier.

    Vivaldi Four Seasons

The Chinese Baroque Players, in a new recording of Vivaldi's ''Four Seasons.'' Performed on traditional Chinese instruments, this audiophile recording is Arranged and Conducted by Choo Boon Chong. Chong and the ensemble allow for Vivaldi's music to speak more delicately compared with traditional instrumentation on this famous piece. The arrangement is for Erhu, Qung Wan, Di, Cello, Pipa, we believe all beautifully done by The Chinese Baroque Players for a marvelous new experience of ''The Four Season's.''

In the very early stage of preparing for this recording, Producer KK Wong, along with this ensemble took great pains to capture the essence of Vivaldi and his period. The recording was made in a country home in Tai Po, China. The space, with its open windows made for a superior production, one that is up to the standards of the Master's Match Audiophile Series.

A unique interpretation of Vivaldi's Four Seasons performed on traditional Chinese instruments. ''A rare one-of-a-kind recording of Vivaldi's timeless masterpiece. A magnificent audio treat, both for its brilliant fidelity and the intensity of the performance by the band hailed in China as one of the finest interpretive groups in Baroque music.''

KK Wong and the Chinese Baroque Players made two artistic decisions which they believed would realistically capture the essence of the Vivaldi piece and period while at the same time be more demanding on the musicians.

First, ''volta prima'' the band was to be challenged by no second takes, what they ''got'' the first time is what went on the record. No room for error. ''We wanted this recording, despite its differing moods, to share a common feeling of enthusiastic enjoyment, of artists taking delight in their craft and Vivaldi's magical composition'' said KK Wong.

Second, ''vivus'' (to be alive) the recording was made away from the studio and its modern technical surroundings and being true to this state-of-the-art minimalism only two microphones and one 2-track analog Studer recorder was utilized. KK selected a verdant country setting at a beautiful home in Tai Po which he believes is one of the finest acoustic sites for a small group performance. The group set up in the open space of this magnificent drawing room with open windows and this improvisational element fed the recording with the truth of nature and its seasons. This choice indeed proved to add verve and gusto to the performance and the recording, not to mention the occasional 21st Century interference, (which hopefully the listener will delight in discovering on his or her own).

The young woman who leads the Chinese Baroque Players is Erhu player Hsin Hsiao-Hung. If you have ever seen a performance on the Erhu you've noticed that it looks like a ladle with a long handle without frets, fitted with two strings and a bow inserted between them. Its range spans about three octaves and has some of the qualities of the violin but with a more nasal tone. Exhibit Records plans to release another album in the future featuring Hsin Hsiao-Hung as a soloist.

    Ortofon Stereo Test Record

Ortofon's new Test Record is designed to allow you to verify your HiFi system in the most natural audio surroundings at home. The Test Record contains special test signals developed for analyzing cartridge performance as well as its interaction with your tonearm and turntable.

Before testing your cartridge, please verify the HiFi system's functionality. The left speaker should be connected to the left amplifier channel and vice versa; both speakers should work in phase and be optimally positioned in the room.
The Test Record is designed to be played through your system with in-built RIAA equalization. Volume control is recommended to be set at a moderate signal level.

Please refer to your turntable and tonearm's instructions for correct installation and alignment, adjust tonearm to be parallel to record surface, set Vertical Tracking Force and antiskating according to the cartridge's recommended technical data, and adjust stylus overhang.

Each side of the record consists of 15 tracks which have been cut from 1-4 and 5-15:

    1. Frequency Sweep Left Channel 800 Hz - 50 kHz. Log. 28 sec. Linear cut* (800 - 20000 Hz ±1,5 dB)
    2. Frequency Sweep Right Channel 800 Hz - 50 kHz. Log. 28 sec. Linear cut* (800 - 20000 Hz ±1,5 dB)
    3. Frequency Sweep Left Channel 800 Hz - 50 kHz. Log. 28 sec. Linear cut* (800 - 20000 Hz ±1,5 dB)
    4. Frequency Sweep Right Channel 800 Hz - 50 kHz. Log. 28 sec. Linear cut* (800 - 20000 Hz ±1,5 dB)
    5. Reference tone 1000 Hz 5 cm/sec rms Left
    6. Reference tone 1000 Hz 5 cm/sec rms Right
    7. Reference tone 1000 Hz 5 cm/sec rms Left
    8. Reference tone 1000 Hz 5 cm/sec rms Right
    9. Tracking ability, lateral 50 m peak
    10. Tracking ability, lateral 60 m peak
    11. Tracking ability, lateral 70 m peak
    12. Tracking ability, lateral 80 m peak
    13. Tracking ability, lateral 90 m peak
    14. Tracking ability, lateral 100 m peak
    15. Square Wave Form 2.7 msec duty cycle 3:7
    * The record has a constant velocity amplitude throughout the sweep.

1-4 Frequency sweep - a tool for checking frequency response
There are several factors which can affect frequency response, including cable capacitance, cartridge loading, tracking force and worn parts. Because of this, it can be difficult to achieve perfectly flat frequency response. Sometimes by making small compromises in the cartridge loading, a better overall frequency response can be achieved. Considering the above the signal must be clean throughout the sweep.

5-8 Reference tone for testing channel output
With this standard reference signal is it possible to check the correctness of the connections of the left and right channels, channel balance and speed of the turntable.

9 -14 Tracking ability test, 315 Hz lateral modulation
These tracks contain a 315 Hz signal, recorded at increasing pick amplitudes of 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 and 100 micrometers. Please refer to your cartridge's tracking ability value specified in the technical data sheet. Your cartridge should be able to track the actual level without audible distortion. Inability to track can be heard as a departure from a pure tone or a sputtering and intermittent tone. To determine if it is one or both channels, the balance control can be utilized. In case of differing tracking ability in the left and right channels it is probably necessary to readjust the anti-skating correction of the tonearm. If both channels fail to track properly, then vertical tracking force should be increased until no further improvement of tracking force can be obtained.

    15. Square Wave Form 2.7 msec duty cycle 3:7
When monitoring the output of your cartridge with an oscilloscope you'll then see a square wave located precisely above each other if the connection from the cartridge is correct.

After successful completion of the above test procedures, you can ensure that your cartridge is optimized. Still the human ear is very sensitive to difference in tone distortion; its level depends on the stylus condition and record wear.

Doug Gillard is a guitarist's guitar player. Over the past two decades he's lent his considerable talents to a huge array of recordings, and has been an integral member of Guided By Voices, Nada Surf, Death Of Samantha, Richard Bunkner's band, Cobra Verde, and others. His technical prowess and creative, angular melodies have influenced a generation of indie rockers. Gillard sings and plays nearly every note on Parade On (with the exception of drums and occasional backing vocals), and, although the songs range from aggressive punky New Wave to melodic 70s influenced psych, this is assuredly a pop record that should appeal to fans of all his other outfits.
