    Old Fears

The new School Of Language album is called Old Fears and it's set for release on Memphis Industries on 7 April 2014. Old Fears. It's a pop record. A place of clipped falsetto, melancholic funk, iridescent electro, shimmering post-punk, futurist prog. A self-contained sphere of strange sensations. Beguiling textures. Lengthening shadows. At times it is both liminal and minimal, at others emotive and external. Ambiguous and ambient. Tantalising and tempered. Modern. Unique. And funny too. "I wrote a lot of notes and they seemed to distinctly split into things to do with love and things to do with fear," says David Brewis. "A lot of it has ended up with me looking back at when I was 19, 20 - my formative years. So though I wouldn't want to call it a concept album it's definitely themed." Old Fears. Here each song has been honed and polished into something pure, like a vast block of marble chiselled down into a perfectly tiny delicate egg of FabergÉ-esque perfection. Recorded throughout 2013 in Field Music's studio on the banks of the River Wear in Sunderland, synth flourishes sit alongside the staccato jarring guitars of 'A Smile Cracks' and the metronomic rhythms of 'Dress Up'. Like a Ballard novel or a George Shaw painting, 'Between The Suburbs' offers perhaps the most lyrical and poetic moment, where "Dogs chase patterns, play to attention / Bulbs glare on greasy roads...". The title track meanwhile is reminiscent of the haunting giallo film scores of Goblin or kosmische music at its most moving while 'Moment Of Doubt' displays shades of Brian Eno and Robert Wyatt. Other oblique influences come in the form of early Justin Timberlake and N*E*R*D albums, "a bunch of disco records", Canadian experimentalist Sandro Perri, Dr John, Fela Kuti and Shalamar. Old Fears. A haunted collection that occupies a strange, hazy hinterland of permanent gloaming. One where snatched melodies pass each one another like cars gliding by at night on their way back to the silent suburbs. These are polished pieces composed without contrivance. Old Fears. An album that is neither retrogressive or futurist, but simply anchored in the moment. Pure. By beautiful album closer 'You Kept Yourself' one is left with the sensation of seeing, smelling and tasting the world anew.

    Maui Tears

In the six years since Sleepy Sun released the White Dove 7", the Northern California band sometimes seemed to live the lives of a hundred bands. They
toured incessantly, shed old skin, tore down walls with riffs, and explored black smoke, barrel-dark songs, and studio sheen-all with a core that has
survived since the band crawled from the dusty sage-scented Santa Cruz underbrush.

It's that core, and the experiential sum of those hundred lives, which shape the band's fourth release Maui Tears, due for a world release through the
Toronto-based independent label, Dine Alone Records. In the sounds of Maui Tears, you hear echoes of nights shared with fellows and allies like Arctic
Monkeys and Black Angels a band growing self-assured as studio presence...the elasticity and tensions of a creative brotherhood. And like every Sleepy
Sun record, it deftly walks the borders and boundaries between hooky power pop classicism and hazy, primer-grey Camaro rock-all colored by a lurking
sense of fog, unease, and mystery at the corners

The first Art Bears LP, mostly made by the band formerly known as Henry Cow and completed by Fred Frith, Chris Cutler and Dagmar Krause who went on, as 'Art Bears', to investigate this short song format further over the next two years, once Henry Cow had ceased to exist. Experimenting with the song form and the productive possibilities of the recording studio, this was hailed in its time (1978) as a landmark recording, and has been constantly in demand ever since. Therefore this new version, re-mastered by Bob Drake, sounds for the first time like the original tapes. Repackaged with lyrics printed on inner sleeve. Fear

Nearly five years into his solo career, Velvet Underground alum John Cale headed to the studio to reinvent himself yet again in 1974. The result, Fear, became the first of a trio of eclectic albums all released in a period spanning just inside 14 months for Island Records. On this, his fourth solo release and first collaboration with Roxy Music's Phil Manzanera and Brian Eno, Cale changes form with every composition.

Back on domestic vinyl for the first time in decades, this RTI-pressed edition of Fear is cut at Mobile Fidelity by in-house engineer Krieg Wunderlich and features stunning sonics. Quiet surfaces, faithful artwork, and the opportunity to hear Cale's incisive fare unfold amidst wide soundstages and black backgrounds-not to mention the intense content within-make this Wax Cathedral LP a must for music aficionados.

A smooth, textured departure from the clamor of the Velvets but a darker, more rage-filled concoction than Cale's 1973 set Paris 1919, Fear amazes with boundless range. Whether he's channeling the sweet, gentle Doctor Jekyll in symphonic ballads like "Emily and Ship of Fools, sharpening his teeth as the demented Mr. Hyde in the graffiti-strewn city-rock anthem "Gun, or thrilling with morbid joy in Fear is a Man's Best Friend," Cale effortlessly metamorphoses from one persona to the next. The whimsical Man Who Couldn't Afford to Orgy bounces into the earnest, misty You Know Me More than I Know."

In the background, Manzanera's guitar buzzes and stings as Eno sculpts a changing landscape of textures with his synthesizer. Infused with sarcastic or cynical lyrics, sweeping melodies, and a wide-eyed sense of exploration, Fear spins rage into beauty and back again.

Cale is a shapeshifter. Listen to him transform.

    Tears Of The World

On June 16, 2015, the blues world lost an outstanding artist in Mighty Sam McClain. Tears Of The World is his last album, and will remain as his legacy. McClain has sung the blues for half a century, tinged with an energy-boosting helping of soul. Since the deaths of Solomon Burke, Percy Sledge, and McClain s great inspiration Bobby Blue Bland, the soul preacher and bluesman held the status of the only surviving R&B singer of the first generation. This CD includes classics from the repertoire of legendary labels such as Hi Records, a country number from Carlene Carter, and Que Sera, Sera not exactly a typical blues song given the full rock treatment!

    Blood, Sweat, & Tears

With his Presley-like mystique, a strapping baritone voice and songs with universal lunchbucket appeal, Johnny Cash reached one of many career high-water marks with his sprawling 1963 epic, Blood, Sweat And Tears. From the perspiration-drenched, eight-minute version of The Legend Of John Henry's Hammer to Busted, Harlan Howard's down 'n' out hard-luck story, Cash made everything he recorded sound like it had been written just for him. This exact replica of Cash's 1963 classic -on rock-busting 180-gram Sundazed vinyl- shows Cash once again straddling the worlds of country, folk and pop like a black-clad behemoth: a once-in-a-generation artist whose revered work will live on forever.

    Fear Not For Man

Fear Not For Man was one of the first albums to be released by Fela following the sacking of his Kalakuta Republic compound by 1,000 soldiers on 18 February 1977. Fela, along with many other Kalakuta residents, was brutally beaten; his mother, then aged 77, was thrown out of a window, fracturing a leg.

The army set fire to the compound, destroying six Afrika 70 vehicles, all Fela's master tapes and band equipment, a four-track recording studio, and all the community members' personal belongings. It is doubtful, contrary to some sources, Fear Not For Man was recorded after the attack - doubt which is dispelled by neither the gruesome front sleeve design, showing blood flowing down Fela's face.

His response came later, on albums such as Unknown Soldier (1979) and Coffin For Head Of State (1980); Fela's practice of no longer performing a song live once he had released it on record is the reason for the two/three year gap between the attack and the release of these albums.

    Nothing Can Hurt Me

Limited Edition - on Translucent Yellow Vinyl

2011's RSD saw an Omnivore vinyl reissue of the "test pressing" of Big Star's 1975 swansong Third, meticulously recreated right down to the master tape box and tracking sheets. Early in 2012, the band's frontman Alex Chilton was celebrated via the label's release of Free Again: The 1970 Sessions. Now, Omnivore is handling the soundtrack to the Magnolia Pictures documentary Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me, and it will premiere as a RSD-exclusive yellow double vinyl edition limited to 4,000 copies worldwide. The 2012 SXSW Film Festival selection tells the story of the ultimate cult band, a group that never saw any considerable commercial success but influenced an entire generation of pop musicians. Nothing Can Hurt Me chronicles Alex Chilton's ascent to fame

As lead singer of The Box Tops through the recording of Big Star's three albums, to the 1978 death of Chilton's collaborator Chris Bell.

The 21 previously unreleased tracks on the soundtrack's four vinyl sides encompass vintage unissued mixes, alternate takes, demos, and new mixes made for the motion picture of Big Star, Chilton and Bell songs. The soundtrack includes 21 previously unheard period mixes, new mixes made specifically for the film, and alternate takes and demos. For the limited, first-edition RSD pressing, the 2-LP set will be released on 180-gram RTI HQ translucent yellow vinyl, with mastering by Larry Nix at L. Nix Mastering. The project was overseen by the documentary's executive producer, John Fry, at the legendary Ardent Studios in Memphis.

    Hurt & The Merciless

Hurt & The Merciless marks a musical culmination for The Heavy, a mesmerizing blend of their trademark rock'n'roll classicism and funk and soul grooves, with added sonic experimentation. Self-produced, the band's main aim when recording was to capture the powerful energy of their live show-that life-affirming spark of rock'n'roll when anything feels possible. The 12 track album features lead single Since You Been Gone, with its lolloping groove, plus the spiky garage-rock anthem What Happened To The Love? and is their strongest batch of songs to date.

Blood, Sweat And Tears (Awaiting Repress)

Winner of three Grammy Awards in 1970, this absolutely mind-blowing album peaked at No. 1 on the U.S. charts, staying there for seven weeks, going double platinum by the end of 1969 and stayed on the Top 40 for 66 weeks.

Arguably, the Blood Sweat & Tears that made this self-titled second album - consisting of five of the eight original members and four newcomers, including singer David Clayton-Thomas - was really a different group from the one that made Child Is Father to the Man, which was done largely under the direction of singer/songwriter/keyboard player Al Kooper. They had certain similarities to the original: the musical mixture of classical, jazz and rock elements was still apparent, and the interplay between the horns and the keyboards was still occurring, even if those instruments were being played by different people.

The model where men control everything, and there's a woman singing on top of music that men have produced, for men's gratification, is breaking down, says Cicely Goulder. It's reinforced with children all the time, that girls should be doing specific roles. But it definitely is changing. Kaleida, who write, record, mix and produce all their music themselves, are a part of that change.

The electropop duo met when Christina Wood, who had spent many years looking for a musical partner, was put in contact with Cicely by a friend. The creative chemistry was there from the start. I feel like we intuitively get each other, says Cicely, who was working in film music at the time but jumped at the chance to produce Christina's vocal-led demos. Christina agrees. We have a special chemistry that?s not something you find all the time.

Tear The Roots, Kaleida's debut LP, offers a deep, unsettling kind of pop.

    Tear Down The Walls

The rumbling baritone of Fred Neil and Vince Martins earthy tenor... Its a vocal blend every bit as impressive as the great duos in music history: the Everly Brothers and Simon & Garfunkel with a Greenwich Village twist, of course. Put Neil and Martin, a pair of New York City folkie legends-in-the-making, into a recording studio with a young, pre-Spoonful John Sebastian on harmonica and Felix Pappalardi (later to produce Cream and the Youngbloods) on guitarron (an acoustic Mexican bass guitar) and magic is inevitable. This, of course, is Fred Neil in 1964, well before he just walked away from the folk scene and split for Florida and premature retirement in 1971, to remain an enigma until his recent death. Every recording by this compelling, monstrously talented singer/songwriter should be cherished like spun gold. From the original Elektra Records stereo master, Tear Down the Walls is one of Neils first studio sessions and is undeniably also one of his best.

Blood Sweat And Tears (Pure Pleasure) (Awaiting Repress)

Winner of 3 Grammys in 1970 (Album of the Year, Best Arrangment for Spinning Wheel and Best Contemporary Instrumental Perfomance for Variations On A Theme By Erk Satie) this absolutely mind-blowing album peaked at #1 on the US Charts, staying there for seven weeks, going double platinum by the end of 1969 and stayed on the top 40 for 66 weeks. It's actually in the 13th place of the best selling albums from all time in the US with about 3 millions copies sold.

Arguably, the Blood, Sweat & Tears that made this self-titled second album - consisting of five of the eight original members and four newcomers, including singer David Clayton-Thomas - was really a different group from the one that made Child Is Father To The Man, which was done largely under the direction of singer/songwriter/keyboard player/arranger Al Kooper. They had certain similarities to the original: the musical mixture of classical, jazz, and rock elements was still apparent, and the interplay between the horns and the keyboards was still occurring, even if those instruments were being played by different people.

Kooper was even still present as an arranger on two tracks, notably the initial hit You've Made Me So Very Happy. But the second BS&T, under the aegis of producer James William Guercio, was a less adventurous unit, and, as fronted by Clayton-Thomas, a far more commercial one. Not only did the album contain three songs that neared the top of the charts as singles - You've Made Me So Very Happy, Spinning Wheel, and And When I Die - but the whole album, including an arrangement of God Bless The Child and the radical rewrite of Traffic's Smiling Phases, was wonderfully accessible. It was a repertoire to build a career on, and Blood, Sweat & Tears did exactly that, although they never came close to equaling this album.

    Musicians:

    • David Clayton Thomas (vocal)

    • Steve Katz (guitar, harmonica, vocal)

    • Dick Halligan (organ, piano, trombone, flute, vocal)

    • Fred Lipsius (alto saxophone, piano)

    • Lew Soloffm Chuck Winfield (trumpet, fluegel horn)

    • Jerry Hyman (trombone)

    • Jim Fielder (bass)

    • Bobby Colomby (drums, percussion, vocal)

Recording: August and October 1968 by Roy Halee and Fred Catero

    Production: James William Guerico

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Bitter Tears

Bitter Tears is a concept album released by Johnny Cash in 1964. It is one of several Americana records by Cash. As the title implies, the tracks on the album focus exclusively on the history of and problems facing Native Americans in the United States.

And not without success: "The Ballad of Ira Hayes", about the story of Ira Hayes, a young Marine of Pima, reached No. 3 on the Country charts.

The album is a sensitive, clear-eyed take on the unfair treatment of the American Indian. It's stark and moving, his best Americana album of the '60s.

    Fear Of Life

    Pressed On Colored Vinyl

Creative Adult's sophomore full-length Fear of Life finds the band peeling back some
of their chaotic, fuzzed out psychdelia in favor of a newfound sense of melody. Taking
cues from The Cure and Oasis, jangly and melodic guitar lines weave their way through
smoky, atmospheric west coast post punk. Recorded with Jack Shirley at his Atomic
Garden studio, Fear of Life is Creative Adult at its best with just the right amount of
polish to help guide through the hypnotic layers of sonic haze.

    Fear Inside Our Bones

"Don't look to me for hope/I'm just like you," croons The Almost frontman, and former Underoath, drummer Aaron Gillespie on the title track of the alt rockers' third album. Candid lyrics like this paired with the band's decision to record completely live make for its most raw and organic album yet. Fear Inside Our Bones delivers thundering rhythms and crunchy guitars fans will love, at times even tapping into the pop-rock effervescence of the Foo Fighters.

    From Fear To Eternity

From Fear To Eternity: The Best of 1990-2010 is a 3LP set spanning 20 years of music following the huge 2010 studio album The Final Frontier, which hit #1 in 28 countries around the world. It also became the band's highest-charting album in the U.S., where Iron Maiden was also awarded their first Grammy for Best Metal Performance for El Dorado, which is also included on this collection.

Iron Maiden's current phenomenal global success has seen the band not only scale new-found heights aided by their unique method of touring, but has meant their ever-expanding fan base now encompasses a brand new generation of metal lovers. From Fear To Eternity is a chance for these fans to explore the group's rich history, with the highlights of their last eight studio albums distilled into this handy collection, which follows 2009's Somewhere Back In Time, a compilation of their earlier work from 1980-1990.

Perennial favorites found on this album include songs also featured on Maiden's The Final Frontier World Tour set list, such as Fear of the Dark, The Wicker Man, Blood Brothers, and Dance Of Death alongside recent classics El Dorado and the hauntingly evocative When The Wild Wind Blows. It also includes singles like Holy Smoke and Be Quick or Be Dead together with more progressive thought-provoking album tracks like Afraid To Shoot Strangers and For the Greater Good of God. This 'Best-of' collection charts the musical development of Britain's most successful metal band as they have evolved their sound, producing longer, more complex songs, while gaining huge critical acclaim in the process.
