    Laughing Stock

Virtually ignored upon its initial release, Laughing Stock continues to grow in stature and influence by leaps and bounds. Picking up where Spirit of Eden left off, the album operates outside of the accepted sphere of rock to create music which is both delicate and intense; recorded with a large classical ensemble, it defies easy categorization, conforming to very few structural precedents.

It was during the 1990s that Yes underwent one of its not infrequent periods of revolutionary change. Although it might appear unusual to the outside world, the idea of constantly re-moulding the Yes concept ensures the band remains a dynamic force. One result of such upheaval was the creation of Talk, the 1994 album regarded by many critics as their most powerful and intriguing pieces of work. It certainly represents 'a journey into the unknown' - as the album's producer, the multi-talented Trevor Rabin, describes it.

After the Union tour it was decided that Yes would carry on with Trevor Rabin, Jon Anderson, Tony Kaye and Alan White. Their plan was to record a new album produced by Trevor, which evolved into Talk. Trevor and Jon wrote all the music and lyrics. The aim was to tackle the challenges of the computer age. However, as can be heard on this welcome LP reissue, many of the traditional Yes qualities remain, including the use of acoustic guitar, vocal harmonies and a touch of the traditional Hammond organ sound.

In the aftermath of Talk, Yes was reborn with Jon, Chris, Steve Howe and Alan White back together. A succession of splendid new albums followed, including Open Your Eyes (1997) and The Ladder (1999). During 2001 the band embarked on a Yes Symphonic tour.

    The Birth Of Funk

Nobody in New Orleans laid into the blues so low down and dirty as Buddy Bol-den, whose Funky Butt became a staple in the repertoire of the city's early jazz bands. Jacksonville, Florida, 1960. Charles 'Hungry' Williams mentors young Clayton Fillyau after he had just joined the James Brown band: 'I don't care where you put it on those drums, remember where '1' is and you'll never lose the time.' Listen to Hungry on Huey Smith's Talk To Me Baby and then listen to how Clayton turns it into a relentless breakbeat on James Brown's I've Got Money. Earl King's Trick Bag, prefiguring the Meters, is as good an example of early New Orleansfunk as can be found. Not everything on here was cut in New Orleans. New York singer Vernon Harrel's Slick Chick is held together by an intriguingly syncopated bass line that hints at late '60s Studio One dub. And in case you think any of this was new, listen to Zutty Singleton's drum break on Victoria Spivey's Funny Feathers from 1929. Or Earl Palmer's sixteenth notes, off-backbeat snare accents and double-tempo hi-hats in 1953 on Professor Longhair's Tipitina and Who's Foolin' You.

    Burnin'

The Wailers' fourth album overall, Burnin', was their second for Island Records, released only six months after its predecessor, Catch a Fire. Given that speed, it's not surprising that several tracks -- Put It On, Small Axe, and Duppy Conqueror -- are re-recordings of songs dating back a few years. But they fit in seamlessly with the newer material, matching its religious militancy and anthemic style.

The confrontational nature of the group's message is apparent immediately in the opening track, Get Up, Stand Up, as stirring a song as any that emerged from the American Civil Rights movement a decade before. The Wailers are explicit in their call to violence, a complete reversal from their own 1960s Simmer Down philosophy. Here, on Burnin' and Lootin', they take issue with fellow Jamaican Jimmy Cliff's song of the previous year, Many Rivers to Cross, asking impatiently, How many rivers do we have to cross/Before we can talk to the boss? I Shot the Sheriff, the album's most celebrated song, which became a number one hit in the hands of Eric Clapton in 1974, claims self-defense, admits consequences (If I am guilty I will pay), and emphasizes the isolated nature of the killing (I didn't shoot no deputy), but its central image is violent.

Such songs illuminated the desperation of poor Jamaican life, but they also looked forward to religious salvation, their themes accentuated by the compelling rhythms and the alternating vocals of the three singers. Bob Marley was a first among equals, of course, and after this album his partners, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer, quit the group, which thereafter was renamed Bob Marley and the Wailers.

    Remain In Light (Awaiting Repress)

Ranked 126/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Cut from the Original Analog Masters and Pressed at RTI for Stunning Sound!

Formed in the mid 70s by art school chums David Byrne, Chris Franz, and Tina Weymouth and ex-Modern Lover Jerry Harrison, Talking Heads rose out of the CBGB punk crucible and proved themselves one of the most artistically adventurous and influential bands of all time. Their visionary, polyrhythmic sound fused elements including rock, funk, and punk with diverse world beats, avant-garde minimalism, and pure pop genius.

From their 1977 debut through their Brian Eno and self-produced classics and on to their swan song (1988's Steve Lillywhite-produced Naked), Talking Heads constantly broke creative boundaries while also scoring smart radio hits including "Burning Down The House," "Wild Wild Life," and, from 1980's Remain In Light, the brilliant "Once In A Lifetime."

Considered by many fans and critics alike to be the band's best album, Remain In Light was the third release in the Heads/Eno trilogy and fourth overall. More melodic and funkier sounding than that of its predecessors, the recording finds the band further exploring the African rhythms hinted at on 1979's Fear of Music with the help of a growing personnel that now included Adrian Belew (guitar), Bernie Worrell (keyboards), Steven Scales (percussion) and backing vocalists. As propulsive and essential as ever here on 180 gram vinyl courtesy of Warner Bros. Records!

"On this New Wave watershed, the avant-punk avatars became polyrhythmic pop magicians. David Byrne and Co. combined the thrust of P-Funk, the kinky grooves of Afropop and the studied adventurousness of producer Brian Eno - and they still had a pop hit with 'Once in a Lifetime'." - Rolling Stone

The Watson Twins' new album Talking To You, Talking To Me is undoubtedly their most ambitious to date. The new album finds the sisters Watson taking a soulful turn à la Carole King, but with a distinct pop edge reminiscent of Feist. The result is a heartfelt nod to their roots, retaining the ethereal harmonies that have become their signature while incorporating a myriad of influences and inspirations. Along with a band of friends including members of Everest and My Morning Jacket, the twins recorded the album at Los Angeles' famed Fairfax Recordings, capturing the essence of The Watson Twins' extraordinary talents on a record that is at once driving, poignant and beautiful.

    Sleep Talk

    Silver Colored Vinyl

Perhaps best known as the pioneering guitarist behind the legendary groups Cap'n Jazz and Owls, Victor Villarreal is one of the most inventive guitarists of modern indie-rock. His unique guitar style includes elements of classical, spanish, indie and even metal. Now on the heels of his reunion with Owls (Polyvinyl), Victor is back with his new solo long player, "Sleep Talk".

"Sleep Talk" is Villarreal's second proper solo effort, and his first to enlist bassist (and early Joan of Arc member) Erik Bocek. Utilizing a "one man band" style of performance, the majority of "Sleep Talk" was recorded live in the studio, with Victor simultaneously performing guitar, percussion and vocals. Hinged on the tumbling rhythms of Villarreal's other-worldly guitar style, the tracks on "Sleep Talk" are diverse and moody, and will tickle your brain into a meditative stasis.

    Talk Thelonious

Plated & pressed At Quality Record Pressings!

NRBQ founder Terry Adams pays tribute to his favorite pianist/composer on his album, Talk Thelonious. Adams says it's been a lifetime in the making. I finally realized it was something I was supposed to do. The music on Talk Thelonious is physical and cerebral, simple and complex, and full of pleasant surprises. The album features all the members of NRBQ and the Whole Wheat Horns with an added guest. Both Adams arrangements and the performances stay true to the genius of Thelonious Monk while still going to some new and exciting places.

Highlights include a rollicking Hornin In, an understated but breathtaking Monks Mood, a playful, buoyant That Old Man, a pedal steel-driven, two-stepping Straight No Chaser, and Ruby, My Dear, the albums tour de force with a triplet-driven rhythm section and tremolo electric guitar embellished sparingly by horns, strings, chromatic harmonica, flutes and accordion.

Small Talk is the seventh album by Sly and the Family Stone, released in 1974. This album was the final LP to feature the original Family Stone, which broke up in January 1975.

Singles include Time For Livin' (the band's final Top 40 hit) and Loose Booty, an up-tempo funk track which uses the names of Bible characters Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego as a chant, sampled by the Beastie Boys on their masterpiece Paul's Boutique in 1989. Beastie Boys also covered Time For Livin' which was released on the album Check Your Head in 1992 along with a live music video augmented with skateboarding footage.

On Vinyl For First Time Ever

Wild Child, originally a duo consisting of singer Kelsey Wilson and Alexander Beggins,
has created a sound that is stylistically their own while maintaining the core essence of
the indie/folk-pop genre. Now armed with a full band and the uniquely soulful voices
of the two, Wild Child produces warm and inviting melodies accompanied by takes
of heartbreak, love and loss - a charming contradiction that is
the core of their debut album, Pillow Talk.

    Girl Talk

Speaking about her album Girl Talk, Kate Nash says, I worked with my girl band and the great producer Tom Biller. My friend Jeff Ellis engineered the record. I mixed the record at EastWest on Sunset Boulevard, I made four music videos and flew back to London. In London I recorded and released a song called 'Under-estimate The Girl' which caused an explosion online that was fun to watch. Then I went on tour. I have since been continuing to write and record and have started to plan releasing some of this new music. I'm going to be releasing this record on my own record label 'have 10p' which is exciting/scary/new/etc. but ultimately something I'm really pleased about. This has been a significantly important and challenging year for me, I have absolutely poured my heart, soul, brain, guts and mind into this record.

    Two Devils Will Talk

Our favorite highlanders, The Real McKenzies, will be celebrating 2017 with a brand new album-Two Devils Will Talk- marking their 25th year as a band. There's a saying in Scotland: "Many a mickle makes a muckle." This translates to: "Many a small thing makes a big thing." This is especially true with the unique sound that The Real McKenzies' have cultivated over the years. Two Devils Will Talk is packed with fourteen rousing songs that incorporate classic punk, hard folk, acoustic and electric instruments, all weaving in the Celtic influence for which the band is known. The result of all these combined elements is one of the strongest albums in the band's entire career.

    Talk To Your Daughter

On his 1988 solo effort Talk To Your Daughter, singer/guitarist Robben Ford proves himself a master of sophisticated Blues-Rock guitar playing. The material is quite strong, and all the musicians perform at the highest level, but it's Ford's stellar soloing that makes this release. Fans of flailing '80s Rock virtuosos would do well to check out Ford's exceptional work on Talk To Your Daughter. The musician's colorful yet controlled improvising and harmonic mastery is a rare and beautiful sonic treat.

The title track is dripping with soulful, well-placed guitar lines that play like a master lesson of up-tempo blues phrasing that guitarists would do well to study. Other standouts include Albert King's Born Under a Bad Sign (which was used in Clint Eastwood's feature film Pink Cadillac) and Ain't Got Nothin' But the Blues.

The fine arrangements and especially Vinnie Colaiuta's sharp drumming are all tightly wound with crisp, clear production that tops off the title track making it a shining success. The album also features Toto's Jeff Porcaro on drums on I Got Over It. Listeners fond of Ford's work with the Yellowjackets and numerous side gigs, as well as guitarists and all musicians, should enjoy this very professional, succinctly executed offering. First rate!

    Talk About Body

Talk About Body is the debut album from Men, the new project from Le Tigre's JD Samson, feminist leader and gay icon. Men is a Brooklyn-based band and art/performance collective, where JD is joined by Ladybudy Transistor's Michael O'Neill. The band focuses on the energy of live performance and the radical potential of dance music and speaks on issues of wartime economies, sexual compromise and the demand of liberties.

Men started in 2007 as the DJ/production team of Le Tigre members JD Samson and Johanna Fateman. With Le Tigre on hiatus, the duo began to write new songs, and they merged their efforts with JD's other project Hirsute. Now Johanna and artist Emily Roysdon contribute as writers, consultants and producers as JD and Michael lead the Men charge.

    Body Talk (Speakers Corner)

Just listen to the first thirty seconds of this LP and you know that it's all about the 'Godfather of Soul' - the unique James Brown.

But it's just as obvious that such a great artist as George Benson doesn't just present "Greatest Hits" in a new guise. Six of his own compositions plus one by Donny Hathaway/Gene McDaniels provide the guitarist and singer with a great platform to launch from. He shoots off into orbit, accompanied by first-class guest soloists such as Jon Faddis, Frank Foster, Earl Klugh and Jack DeJohnnette. Ron Carter's bass doesn't boom in the low register but offers a light and airy, yet solid, base.

Body Talk is by no means the declaration of a world-shaking, new and avant-garde jazz. It is, however, a successful blend of jazz, soul and fusion. And when such a superb arranger as Pee Wee Ellis has his finger in the pie - or rather: his pen on the manuscript paper - then one can be sure that the almost 50-minute-long LP is a great success from beginning to end. Finally, one shouldn't forget the helping hand of the producer Creed Taylor, who made a significant contribution to this milestone on the CTI label.

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.
