    Bolan's Zip Gun

Much of T. Rex's 1975 release Bolan's Zip Gun returns to the understated romp Bolan had always excelled at. The delightful knockabout Precious Star, the unrepentant boogie of Till Dawn and the pounding title track, all echo with the effortless lightheartedness which was Bolan at his most carelessly buoyant, while Token of My Love is equally incandescent, a playful blues number which swiftly became a major in-concert favorite.

But the essence of Zip Gun remains firmly in the funky pastures which characterized Zinc Alloy, with the only significant difference lying in the presentation. Out went the plush production which so diluted the earlier set, to be replaced by a sparser sound which emphasized the rhythms, heightened the backing vocals, and left rock convention far behind.

Light of Love, Golden Belt and the heavyweight ballad I Really Love You Babe may not be Stax-sized attractions, but they have an earthy authenticity nevertheless.

One can hardly imagine Prince, Erykah Badu, or Outkast without the influence of Betty Davis. Her style of raw and revelatory punk-funk defies any notions that women can't be visionaries in the worlds of rock and pop. In recent years, rappers from Ice Cube to Talib Kweli have rhymed over her intensely strong but sensual music. Betty penned the song ''Uptown'' for The Chambers Brothers and wrote the tunes that got The Commodores signed to Motown. The Detroit label soon came calling, pitching a Motown songwriting deal, which Betty turned down. Motown wanted to own everything. Heading to the UK, Marc Bolan of T. Rex urged the creative dynamo to start writing for herself. A common thread throughout Betty's career would be her unbending DIY ethic, which made her quickly turn down anyone who didn't fit with the vision. She would eventually say no to Eric Clapton as her album producer, seeing him as too banal. In 1968, she married Miles Davis and quickly influenced him on the magic of psychedelic rock along with introducing him to Jimi Hendrix-personally inspiring the classic album, Bitches Brew.

Miles and Betty fans have long debated the truth of a near mythological session recorded in Studios B and E at Columbia's 52nd Street Studios on May 14th and 20th, 1969. The landmark session was produced by Miles and Teo Macero and featured Betty on vocals, accompanied by Jimi Hendrix Experience drummer Mitch Mitchell, guitarist John McLaughlin, Herbie Hancock on keys, and Dylan/Miles session bassist Harvey Brooks. Other players included bassist Billy Cox (Band of Gypsys), saxophonist Wayne Shorter, and organist Larry Young. Now, Light In The Attic, with full support from Betty herself, presents these recordings to the public for the very first time. These historic sessions-never heard, never bootlegged-predate Miles' revolutionary album, Bitches Brew, and are the true birth of Miles' jazz-rock explorations, along with the roots for Betty's groundbreaking funk that came years later, starting with her self-titled debut in 1973. While, ultimately, these recordings would go unreleased for nearly half a century, they would greatly shape each of their careers.

The vibe is intrinsically unique, fresh, and futuristic-jazz heavyweights playing psychedelia, rock, and jazz-fusion long before the term became commonplace. The songs include Betty originals and covers of classics by Creedence and Cream. The concepts explored on these previously unheard sessions fueled concepts that wouldn't be fully realized until years later with Miles' seminal On The Corner.

Additionally, included here is the first time rerelease of a 1968 Columbia single, recorded in October 1968 at Columbia Studios in Los Angeles. The session was produced by Jerry Fuller and featured South African maverick Hugh Masekela on trumpet and arrangements, plus members of jazz-funk pioneers The Crusaders-including trombonist Wayne Henderson and pianist Joe Sample. Two of the three tracks included here from this session are previously unreleased.

This deluxe package is a treasure trove for both Betty and Miles fans, including rare documents from the pen of co-producer Teo Macero, rarely seen photos from legendary photographer Baron Wolman, and new interviews with Mrs. Davis herself, Harvey Brooks, and Hugh Masekela-the entire project overseen with Betty's full blessing.

    Betty Davis

One can hardly imagine the genre-busting, culture-crossing musical magic of Outkast, Prince, Erykah Badu, Rick James, The Roots, or even the early Red Hot Chili Peppers without the influence of R&B pioneer Betty Davis. Her style of raw and revelatory punk-funk defies any notions that women can't be visionaries in the worlds of rock and pop. In recent years, rappers from Ice Cube to Talib Kweli to Ludacris have rhymed over her intensely strong but sensual music.

There is one testimonial about Betty Davis that is universal: she was a woman ahead of her time. In our contemporary moment, this may not be as self-evident as it was thirty years ago - we live in an age that's been profoundly changed by flamboyant flaunting of female sexuality: from Parlet to Madonna, Lil Kim to Kelis. Yet, back in 1973 when Betty Davis first showed up in her silver go-go boots, dazzling smile and towering Afro, who could you possibly have compared her to? Marva Whitney had the voice but not the independence. Labelle wouldn't get sexy with their "Lady Marmalade" for another year while Millie Jackson wasn't "Feelin' Bitchy" until 1977. Even Tina Turner, the most obvious predecessor to Betty's fierce style wasn't completely out of Ike's shadow until later in the decade.

Ms. Davis's unique story, still sadly mostly unknown, is unlike any other in popular music. Betty wrote the song "Uptown" for the Chambers Brothers before marrying Miles Davis in the late '60s, influencing him with psychedelic rock, and introducing him to Jimi Hendrix - personally inspiring the classic album 'Bitches Brew.'

But her songwriting ability was way ahead of its time as well. Betty not only wrote every song she ever recorded and produced every album after her first, but the young woman penned the tunes that got The Commodores signed to Motown. The Detroit label soon came calling, pitching a Motown songwriting deal, which Betty turned down. Motown wanted to own everything. Heading to the UK, Marc Bolan of T. Rex urged the creative dynamo to start writing for herself. A common thread throughout Betty's career would be her unbending Do-It-Yourself ethic, which made her quickly turn down anyone who didn't fit with the vision. She would eventually say no to Eric Clapton as her album producer, seeing him as too banal.

In 1973, Davis would finally kick off her cosmic career with an amazingly progressive hard funk and sweet soul self-titled debut. Davis showcased her fiercely unique talent and features such gems as "If I'm In Luck I Might Get Picked Up" and "Game Is My Middle Name." The album Betty Davis was recorded with Sly & The Family Stone's rhythm section, sharply produced by Sly Stone drummer Greg Errico, and featured backing vocals from Sylvester and the Pointer Sisters.

Spelling the end of Happy Mondays laddishness, Suede were a southern Smiths transported back to the era of Ziggy Stardust. Their songs were vignettes of sad suburban dreamers, set to chords that came straight from the David Bowie songbook. Singer Brett Anderson exhumed Bowie's feyest Anthony Newley voice, while guitarist Bernard Butler took a major leaf out of the Johnny Marr simultaneous-lead-and-rhythm book, underpinning Anderson's wan languor with a gritty verve. The Drowners was a glam classic, and Metal Mickey as poutingly punky as any of the great T. Rex singles. - Barney Hoskyns

    Gatefold Sleeve With Insert

Dallas Buyers Club follows the Oscar winning performance by Matthew McConaughey portraying the '80s real life character Ron Woodroof, who's suddenly being diagnosed as H.I.V.- positive and given 30 days to live. Yet he will not, and does not, accept a death sentence. A crash course of research reveals
a lack of approved treatments and medications in the U.S., so Ron crosses the border into Mexico. There, he learns about alternative treatments and begins smuggling them into the U.S.

An outsider to the gay community, Ron finds an unlikely ally
in fellow AIDS patient and transsexual Rayon (another Oscar Winning performance by Jared Leto). They establish a "buyers club," where H.I.V.-positive people pay monthly dues for access to the newly acquired supplies. With a growing community
of friends and clients, Ron fights for dignity, education, and acceptance. In the years following his diagnosis, the embattled Lone Star loner lives life to the fullest like never before.

The soundtrack to triple Academy Award winning feature
film Dallas Buyers Club contains songs by Shuggie Otis, My Morning Jacket, T. Rex and actor/singer Jared Leto's Thirty Seconds To Mars. The first 1000 copies of this double LP are uniquely pressed on Gold and Blue vinyl (each record a different colour!).

    Sun Structures

'Sun Structures' is the eagerly anticipated debut album from Temples, featuring the singles 'Shelter Song', 'Colours To Life', 'Keep In The Dark' and 'Mesmerise'.

Temples release their cracking debut album 'Sun Structures' - It's immaculately-crafted pyschedelic pop album that would sit perfectly next to The Byrds, T Rex and Tame Impala. It's full of psych drenched guitars, the odd burst of the 60s sounding organ, energetic drums and a collection of bass lines that most bands would kill for. Bursting with ideas, each track marries a stunning chorus with singer James Bagshaw's velveteen vocal, a slew of harmonies and kaleidoscopic melodies.

    The Svelteness Of Boogietude

The Svelteness of Boogietude is his debut on Thrill Jockey and Bryon Coley (from whom he aquired the Brother JT moniker) called it his most oustanding effort yet. The album is a typical of JT's output in certain ways -- rockers mixed with ballads, all of them crafted with casual elegance -- but there are new elements here as well. In particular, there's an attention to the legacy of later-period T. Rex, which results in tunes that kick total ass. Brother JT is a moniker that finds Terlesky's songwriting and ample guitar skills taking a decidedly psychedelic form but never deviating too far from the classic song structure.

    The Masterplan

Following a British rock tradition initiated by the Beatles and lovingly inherited by the Jam and the Clash, Oasis is the only band of the era to offer fans extra tracks on their singles that are often as good as, if not better than, the hits. Rather than saving his new songs for the next full album, Noel Gallagher prefers immediacy. Thus, this compilation of those various B-Sides works just great as a listening experience, offering metallic rushes (Acquiesce, The Swamp Song) and absolute melodic beauty (Talk Tonight, the marvelous Rockin' Chair), while conjuring up the ghosts of Mott the Hoople, T. Rex, the Fab Four, and Slade. -Bill Holdship

    The New Hovering Dog

BJ Cole came to prominence in the early 1970s with the country rock outfit, Cochise. His signature pedal steel playing has marked numerous LPs including ones by T Rex, Elton John (Tumbleweed Connection and Madman Across the Water), Cat Stevens, Bjork, The Verve, Depeche Mode, Beck, Elvis Costello, David Gilmour, Emmylou Harris, Pet Shop Boys, Robert Plant, Scott Walker, and the list goes on. The man Sting once described as "the best pedal steel player in the world" is versed in many styles from pop, rock, jazz to experimental. His versatility is perhaps no better showcased than on his first solo album The New Hovering Dog; it combines poetry with orchestration and electronics with a strong cast of musicians from that era. Originally released in 1972 on United Artists, it is now available again on LP after 40 years, remastered and two bonus tracks added.

    Mask (Awaiting Repress)

From 1978-1982 Bauhaus surged mercurial through the post-punk music scene, tearing into tense, bass-driven new-wave, T-Rex-esque dark-glam and swirling, clattering, orchestral atmospherics, whilst churning it into a grand, velvet, Rimbaudian hallucination. Managing to expand their sound on Mask, the members of Bauhaus stretched themselves into new areas of music and performance, resulting in an album that was arguably even better than the band's nearly flawless debut.

    Dead Men Tell No Tales

Dead Men Tell No Tales takes a stripped-down turn with plaintive lyrical confessions as pretty as they are prescient, summoning Syd Barrett?s wild spirit through a seance of simple reverb burbles and acoustic incantations. Front-and-center vocals recounting love, loss and death's lurking presence are presented against airy guitar shimmer in a demented yin and yang seemingly forecasting the scarf-swathed, underground dandy man's abrupt fall nearly 20 years later. In the midst of such weighty tomes are less downtrodden peeks into the studio, where Sudden and his Jacobites are caught on tape in a few joyful fits and starts, adding another complex layer to this celebrated post-punk. In founding Swell Maps, the post-punk prefacing Birmingham art-snots, Nikki Sudden and his drumming brother Epic Soundtracks charted new territory for racket and corrosive guitar. But after folding Swell Maps at the dawn of the '80s, Nikki Sudden plowed through another decade's worth of terrifically fertile ground. Drawing on his devotion to the Rolling Stones and T. Rex - alongside guitarist Dave Kusworth as Jacobites, plus a cheekily named cohort of British sidemen - Nikki Sudden cut a string of raw, inspired rock 'n' roll records, etched with double-edged travel melancholia and hard-bitten punk dejection.

    Jagged Time Lapse

    Import

The band that was louder than the Who, John's Children became one of the earliest examples of psychedelic flower power. Jagged Time Lapse finds the one and only Marc Bolan (T.Rex) at his loudest and the album features everything you could ask for from one of Britains most rambunctious bands. In fact, the band's stage show, which included band members fighting each other and Bolan whipping the stage with a chain, was a huge influence on punk rock. Includes band favorites such as: Desdemona (which was banned by the BBC due to its controversial lyrics), Midsummer Nights Scene and Go-Go Girl. Also features a bonus track cover of The Beatles Help.

    Disturbing Wildlife

Invisible Familiars has announced their debut album, Disturbing Wildlife, will be released on Other Music Recording Co. In conjunction with today's LP reveal, the band premiered album track "Heavenly All" - featuring Nels Cline on guitar - via Bullet. Invisible Familiars signed to Other Music this spring, releasing the 7" single "Clever Devil" b/w "Digger's Invitation" in June. Stereogum called it, "T. Rex in a funhouse of horrors," advising, "Let it cast a spell on you." Invisible Familiars is led by Jared Samuel, a New York City-based songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who has long made his living playing music and supporting a variety of NYC artists - from Sharon Jones to Martha Wainwright, and most recently, Cibo Matto and the Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger.

Samuel retreated to the seclusion of a houseboat docked in Jamaica Bay to write the music and words that would become Disturbing Wildlife. It was the first time I'd ever spent more than one day completely by myself, said Samuel, wondering just exactly what is real and then, ultimately, feeling fine. New single Heavenly All is a lyrical treasure map to the transformative and often playful experience of solitude: talking to myself again, cravin heavy metal. Back on land, Samuel enlisted good friend Michael Leonhart (Steely Dan/Yoko Ono) to co-produce the record and gathered a striking group of musicians to help perform it, including Robbie Mangano, Tim Kuhl, Jolie Holland, Yuka Honda & Miho Hatori (Cibo Matto), Nels Cline, Ryan Sawyer, Stuart Bogie (Antibalas), and many more.

Disturbing Wildlife is a record that slinks and slithers through time, defying the notion of genre and embracing the risk of feeling. It never lets the listener pin it down and, instead, returns the favor, holding you still between the sometimes-dream of existence and the exquisite power of Samuel's compositions.

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World Soundtrack (Awaiting Repress)

    On Red Vinyl!

The soundtracks to movies adapted from comic books are often marketing free-for-alls; promoting bands takes precedence over choosing songs that make sense for the film. However, nothing could be further from the truth for Scott Pilgrim vs. the World's music. Since so much of the comic revolves around the bands that the characters play in, the film was already somewhat protected from having a bunch of random songs crammed into its soundtrack, but the film's creative team ensured that the music was done right. Director Edgar Wright's other films (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, etc.) boast soundtracks that brim with personality onscreen and play more like mixtapes than albums in their own right; that feeling continues here with picks like Beachwood Sparks' By Your Side, T. Rex's Teenage Dream, and Frank Black's I Heard Ramona Sing.

The musicians who bring the comic's bands to life are just as cleverly chosen. Beck revisited his slacker-punk roots with the songs he wrote for Scott's band Sex Bob-Omb; though they're performed by Michael Cera and the other actors in the film, Threshold, Summertime, and Garbage Truck still have Beck's gloriously messy early-`90s vibe to them. Later, he contributes Ramona, a dreamy ballad that sounds more like his 2000s work. Meanwhile, Broken Social Scene are Crash and the Boys, the rival band whose I'm So Sad, So Very Very Sad lasts a whopping five seconds. Every part of the soundtrack shows how much care went into it, from choosing artists like Broken Social Scene and Metric to nod to the story's Canadian setting, to the 8-bit version of Threshold that reflects Pilgrim's immersion in video games. The sweetest detail may be the song that started it all: Scott Pilgrim, by the Canadian all-female band Plumtree from their 1997 album Predicts the Future, holds within it all the breathless true love and crunchy guitar goodness that sparked the comic.

Somehow, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World's music remains true not just to the comic, but to the work of everyone involved in the story at every stage, with plenty of fun and heart to boot. ~ Heather PharesEntertainment Weekly (p.75) - 'Garbage Truck' is the keeper, with a fuzz-punk groove that's no laughing matter.

    Celabrasion

Describing their music as akin to "The Ronettes on speed," Kentucky's Sleeper Agent make hook-laden scuzzy garage-pop rooted in both soul and Southern rock, all fueled by drummer Justin 'Keyser' Wilson's manic rhythms and the dueling harmonizing vocals of vocalist Alex 'Kidd' Kandel and guitarist Tony 'Tutone' Smith, who is also the band's songwriting force of nature.

Not only do they cite such musical artists as Jay Reatard, The Strokes, Pixies, T-Rex, The Beatles, and Led Zeppelin as influences, they are also influenced by horror and sci-fi flicks, as well as stand-up comedians. "We just want people to listen to the music and have fun," says Smith. "It's pretty obvious that's what we want when you listen to the album."

Just in time for their 2013 US tour, TKO RECORDS is proud to be reissuing GIUDA's (Pronounced JUDAH) 2010 debut lp, Racey Roller. Giuda is a five-piece band from Rome, Italy whose mix of anthemic '70's glam hooks and punchy delivery of early UK punk, has stunned listeners all across the globe. The album has been famously described by Robin Wills (the Barracudas) as COCK SPARRER twinned with THE EQUALS. The band has quickly become an underground sensation, highly praised by publications as diverse as MOJO, Rolling Stone, and Maximum Rock'n'Roll. Working from the same blueprint as groups like SLADE, T-Rex, The FACES, Mud, Status Quo and Sweet, Giuda take you back to the monumental bygone era of '70's Rock, pre-Glitter days when music was all about monstrous riffs, and boisterous attitudes.
