File Under: Easy Listening (Deluxe Edition)

This vinyl reissue of Sugar's classic 1994 album File Under: Easy Listening from Merge includes a remastered version of the album plus downloads of the full record, B-sides and a complete 1994 live show.

Gatefold vinyl with printed Euro sleeve.

Through both his solo work and as a frontman for the legendary HÜsker DÜ, Bob Mould pioneered a signature wall of guitar sound and unmistakable vocal style that has imprinted a defining influence on more than one generation. In the three decades encompassing his career thus far, however, Mould saw his greatest success during his stint as lead singer, guitarist and songwriter for iconic early '90s trio Sugar.

File Under: Easy Listening a.k.a F.U.E.L., the third and final album by this short-lived but brilliant trio, was originally released in September of 1994. Songs like "Your Favorite Thing" have endured as mainstays of Mould's solo performances to this day!

"When word went around that Bob Mould had a new band, not only a 'band' band (as opposed to hired band to play his solo albums on tour) but also a trio, of course anyone raised from teenhood on punk rock and HÜsker DÜ in particular (like myself) went into high expectation mode. Copper Blue turned out to be a distillation of Bob's pop mode and roaring guitar mode into one tightly wound explosion of sound. There was space enough for the songs to breathe, but a driving urgency & energy in the rhythm section of Barbe & Travis that gives the whole album a barely-harnessed feel. Sonically, on songs like "The Act We Act" (Copper Blue), "JC Auto" (Beaster) & "Gee Angel" (F.U.E.L.) Sugar took HÜsker DÜ's aesthetic widescreen, the center held steady by Bob's focused songwriting. It's kind of incredible what Sugar did within such a small discography; there's no wasted space and the flow of great songs is a surprising, exciting listen 20 years later."- Mac McCaughan of Superchunk & Merge

    Copper Blue / Beaster

This 2LP vinyl reissue of Sugar's classic albums Copper Blue (1992) and Beaster (1993) from Merge features both albums with a coupon included for full download of the records, B-sides and a complete 1992 live show. Gatefold vinyl with printed Euro sleeves.

Sugar's 1992 debut album Copper Blue sold over 250,000 units upon its original release and received overwhelming praise. Rolling Stone christened it "thunderous"; Vogue dubbed it "smashing." NME would ultimately name it their 1992 Album of the Year. Currently, Mould has been commemorating Copper Blue's 20th anniversary by playing the record in its entirety with his current band of Jason Narducy (bass) and Jon Wurster (drums).

Recorded and mixed during the same intense sessions that produced Copper Blue, the Beaster EP was originally released in April 1993. Notably darker in tone than the widescreen power-pop of Copper Blue, Beaster nevertheless boasts some of Mould's most powerful songwriting.

"When word went around that Bob Mould had a new band, not only a 'band' band (as opposed to hired band to play his solo albums on tour) but also a trio, of course anyone raised from teenhood on punk rock and HÜsker DÜ in particular (like myself) went into high expectation mode. Searching For Sugar Man

The story remains one of the music world's most unusual tales of the 1970s: an obscure debut LP by a Detroit singer-songwriter becomes a source of hope and inspiration to the anti-Apartheid movement in South Africa. Now, the story of Rodriguez and his cult album Cold Fact is the basis for Searching For Sugar Man, a riveting new documentary by filmmaker Malik Bendjelloul. Light In The Attic Records in partnership with Sony Legacy are honored to announce the release of the original motion picture soundtrack, comprising tracks from Cold Fact and its 1971 follow-up Coming From Reality - both reissued in 2008 and 2009 by Light In The Attic. The soundtrack begins with the otherworldly "Sugar Man" and acts as a primer to this long-overlooked musician's fusion of gritty funk, political poetry and blissful psych-folk.

Searching For Sugar Man, a Red Box Films & Passion Pictures Production in association with Canfield Pictures & The Documentary Company, distributed by Sony Pictures Classics in the U.S., was a big hit at this year's Sundance Film Festival where it won the world documentary audience award and a special jury award, and then went on to screen at SXSW, Tribeca, and the Sheffield Doc Fest. The film opens in New York, Los Angeles, and London (via Studio Canal) on July 27th and will play in other cities throughout the coming months. For a complete release schedule, visit the film's website: www.SearchingForSugarManMovie.com.

Back in the late '60s, Rodriguez was discovered in a Detroit bar by renowned producers Dennis Coffey and Mike Theodore. They recorded a 1970 album that they believed was going to secure his reputation as one of the greatest recording artists of his generation. Instead, Cold Fact bombed, and despite the release of a second LP, entitled Coming From Reality and produced by Steve Rowland, Rodriguez drifted into obscurity, even being subject to some fantastic rumors of a dramatic onstage death.

Cold Fact took on a life of its own when a bootleg recording found its way into apartheid-era South Africa. Banned by the government, the album became a country-wide phenomenon over the next two decades, and the soundtrack to a resistance movement of liberal African youth. Back in Detroit, working in construction and renovation (he also ran for mayor), Rodriguez was totally unaware that he was not just a folk hero but a household name thousands of miles away.

Decades later, two South African fans, Stephen 'Sugar' Segerman and Craig Bartholomew-Strydom set out to find out what really happened to their hero, and their investigation led them to a story more extraordinary than any of the many myths they'd heard. Their story forms the basis of Searching For Sugar Man.

Both sides of the story, Rodriguez's life in Detroit and the subsequent impact of his music in South Africa, proved fascinating to Stockholm-based documentary filmmaker Malik Bendjelloul. His short documentary films for Swedish Television's international cultural weekly show Kobra became the basis for such films as Men Who Stare At Goats (George Clooney) and The Terminal (Tom Hanks). The evolution of the financing, production, and filming of Searching For Sugar Man is as fascinating and complex as the life of Rodriguez himself.

"I describe myself as 'musico-politico'," Rodriguez said recently. "I was born and bred in Detroit, four blocks from the city center. Back then, I was influenced by the urban sounds that were going on around me all the time. Music is art and art is a cultural force. As far as my work from Detroit comparing to the South African Apartheid, the similarities echo. The placards of the 1970s in the United States read things like: We Want Jobs and Stop the War - I was looking at the music from a working class perspective that was relevant, as it turns out, to the kids in South Africa."

    Sugar (Pure Pleasure)

If ever there were a record that both fit perfectly and stood outside the CTI Records' stable sound, it is Sugar by Stanley Turrentine. Turrentine, a veteran of the soul-jazz scene since the '50s, was accompanied by a who's who of groove players, including guitarist George Benson, Lonnie Liston Smith on electric piano, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, bassist Ron Carter, organist Butch Cornell, and drummer Billy Kaye, among others. The title track is a deep soul blues workout with a swinging backbeat and the rhythm section fluidly streaming through fours and eights as Benson, Hubbard, and Turrentine begin slowly and crank up the heat, making the pace and stride of the cut simmer then pop - especially in Hubbard's solo. This is truly midnight blue, and the party's at the point of getting really serious or about to break up. By the time Benson picks up his break, full of slick, shiny, warm arpeggios, the seams are bursting and couples are edging into corners. Butch Cornell's Sunshine Alley is a solid, funky groover, paced by organ and double fours by Kaye. Turrentine and Hubbard stride into the melody and keep the vamp in the pocket, riding out past the blues line into a tag that just revs the thing up even further. But the big surprise is in the final track, one of the most solidly swinging, from-the-gut emotional rides of John Coltrane's Impressions ever taken. Turrentine is deep inside his horn, ringing out in legato with everything he has - and it is considerable. Ron Carter's bass playing flows through the modal interludes, creating a basis for some beautifully intervallic invention by Benson and Smith by building a series of harmonic bridges through the mode to solos. It's hard to believe this is Turrentine, yet is could be no one else. If jazz fans are interested in Turrentine beyond the Blue Note period - and they should be - this is a heck of a place to listen for satisfaction.

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Sugar

Twenty years after the release of G. Love and Special Sauce's debut album, the original lineup of the revered hip-hop blues trio is back together for a new
album, Sugar, and an extensive U.S. tour.

I had a good idea for a riff off an old hip hop sample which I changed up, flipped upside down and played with a slide guitar, G. Love says about the first
single Nothing Quite Like Home. We cut the song live with the trio at Brushfire in L.A and added the 'B' section and drum break. I had been talking to Dan
Reynolds from Imagine Dragons earlier in the summer about working on something and I sent him the instrumental we cut. He penned the lyrics and sent
back a real tight demo over the instrumental. Later I added my vocals and got a helping hand from two of my favorite singers -- Ben Harper, who just
brought the chorus to another level, and Marc Broussard, who added some nice backgrounds.

SUGAR reunites G. Love, upright bassist James Jimi Jazz Prescott and drummer Jeffrey The Houseman Clemens for the first time in eight years.
Tracked largely at Brushfire Records' Solar Powered Plastic Plant studio in L.A, the disc also features Los Lobos guitarist David Hidalgo, current Oscar
nominee Merry Clayton - best known for her duet with Mick Jagger on the Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter - and others.

Ranked 310/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

For their fifth full-length release and first for Warner Bros, the Red Hot Chili Peppers enlisted the talents of producer extraordinaire Rick Rubin. It resulted in the band's breakthrough record as well as their high water mark, a sprawling 17-song punk/funk/hip-hop hybrid awash in sexual innuendo and references to drugs and death. Blood Sugar Sex Magik (1991) produced no less than five hit singles including Under The Bridge, Give It Away, Breaking The Girl, Suck My Kiss and If You Have To Ask, selling over 15 million copies in the process.

    Blood // Sugar // Secs // Traffic

Hey, what's this? Well that, my friend, is the newest album from The
Gotobeds, entitled Blood // Sugar // Secs // Traffic. It's their second
full-length LP and their first for Sub Pop. Whoa, whoa, please slow down.
I'm already completely lost. What you just said sounded like a stream of
complete gibberish. Okay, I'll lay it out for you and if you have any
questions could you yell them at me? SOUNDS GOOD. The Gotobeds
formed vaguely around 2009 in Pittsburgh and play a mutant strain of rock
music that is often filed under punk, indie rock, or 99-cent discount bin.
WAIT, THE GOTOBEDS? I HEARD THEY WERE KNUCKLEHEADS! Only if
the knuckle is the part of the human body that contains the brains. Much
like their previous releases on underground stalwart labels like Mind Cure
and 12XU, this new album artfully slips intelligence and experimentation
into a dying art form. It's a harder feat than you'd think.

And sure, their live shows have often been compared to an all night party
where I feared for my life and the lives of everybody in the five block
radius, and their recorded output is akin to the sonic manifestos of four
men deprived of human love and raised on beer and Swell Maps, Mission
of Burma, and old Fall records. But what you get with The Gotobeds,
delivered in spades on this album, is smart, noisy rock with just the right
    amount of stupid.

FAIR ENOUGH. SO HOW'D THIS GET MADE? It was recorded in bursts
over several months of 2015 in their friend My War Matt's basement in
Pittsburgh. Unlike previously, the songs were conceived and recorded in
blocks, which resulted in a more experimental feel. But this is no chin
stroking curate's egg. You like loud, double guitar leads? OF COURSE I DO.
WHO DOESN'T? You're in luck, because this album is carpeted with em,
thanks to Eli Kasan and TFP. On a song like 'Bodies,' it sounds as if
you've walked into the biggest Guitar Center, but, you know, not terrible.
Keeping it all locked down is the rhythm section of drummer, Cary Belback
and bassist, Gavin Jensen. They allow the downright prettiness of a song
like Red Alphabet to shine, and the lyrics on the anti-sexism thrash of
    Crisis Time to punch through.

THIS ALL SOUNDS WONDERFUL, IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I NEED
TO CARE ABOUT? Eh, probably not. Except that Tim Midyett (Silkworm,
Bottomless Pit, Mint Mile) and some bum (Protomartyr) are featured as
guest vocalists on Rope and Why'd You, respectively. Also, I'd be remiss
to not mention the fact that the band's live show is a testament to the
cathartic nature of speed, skill, repetition, noise, and red stage lights. If
you don't believe me, ask the bands they have played with, like Total
Control, Tyvek, or The Replacements. Also, they rep Pittsburgh harder than
anyone possibly could and come off better for it...which is saying
    something.

I THINK I UNDERSTAND. BLOOD // SUGAR // SECS // TRAFFIC IS THE
GREATEST ALBUM SINCE THE LAST GOTOBEDS RECORD? Yes. Now
please stop yelling. -Joe Casey, Protomartyr

    Sugaring Season

Beth Orton's Anti debut captures the classic hypnotic sound that won her prominence, at the same time as it shows a singer at the full maturity of her instrument, with a new soulfulness that can recall Roberta Flack or Nina Simone one moment, June Christy at the next. Sugaring Season is in many ways a culmination of Orton's art of contradictions, a full circle from that first John Martyn cover she recorded with William Orbit back in the day ? soulful and ambient, lush and bittersweet, starkly still and fiercely rhythmic.

    G. Love & Special Sauce are a Philadelphia-based trio whose laid-back, sloppy blues sound is quite unique, as it encompasses the sound/production of classic R&B and recent rap artists (the Beastie Boys, in particular). The group is composed of G. Love (born Garrett Dutton) on guitar/vocals/harmonica, Jeff Clemens on drums, and Jim Prescott on upright bass. (All Music Guide)

    Lemonade And Brownies

    First Time On Vinyl!

Sugar Ray became widely known through their infectious Pop single "Fly", and a consequent lighter musical direction displayed by songs like "Every Morning", "Someday", and "When It's Over". However, at Sugar Ray's earliest conception, they were a Rock/Metal band at heart, with enough goofy energy to land them a deal with Atlantic and a debut record produced by DJ Lethal.

Lemonade and Brownies was released in 1995, and it showcases Sugar Ray in their most youthful and idealistic phase. Their major-label debut is a competent set of Alternative Funk/Metal, with a few Punk anthems to boot. Even though the album did not chart, the band stayed on the label going on to huge success a few years later.

DJ Lethal (of Limp Bizkit fame) produced the album. Named one of the sexiest covers art in the history of recorded music, actress Nicole Eggert (known for her role in the insanely popular '90s TV drama series Baywatch) is featured on the cover.

    V

Sugar Hill Records is proud to announce the release of V, the long-awaited solo debut from Nashvilles not-so secret weapon: Kenny Vaughan. Since first arriving in Music City in the late 80s from his home state of Colorado, Vaughan quickly set himself apart as a different breed of guitar-slinger, technically assured and, more importantly, armed with a deeply felt reverence for a wide range of musical traditions encompassing vintage country, classic pop, hard bop, and beyond. The ten tracks that comprise V dip their toes in all of these waters.

    Swimmin' Pools, Movie Stars

American music treasure Dwight Yoakam's special collaboration with leading bluegrass label Sugar Hill Records, Swimmin' Pools, Movie Stars is set for release this fall. For the making of this album, Yoakam assembled a band of bluegrass luminaries to reinterpret favorites from his catalogue of gems. The 11-track album features Yoakam compositions from his extensive catalog.

This project was produced by nine-time Grammy winner Gary Paczosa (Alison Krauss, Dolly Parton), Jon Randall (songwriter of Whiskey Lullaby") and Yoakam, recorded at both Southern Ground Studio (TN) and the legendary Capitol Records Studio B in Los Angeles and mixed by Chris Lord Alge. For the recording, the production team gathered together a world-class band of bluegrass's current greats including Grammy winner and nine-time international Bluegrass Music Association Guitar Player of the Year Bryan Sutton on guitar, Grammy winner Stuart Duncan on fiddle and banjo, 14-time Grammy winner Barry Bales on bass, Adam Steffey on mandolin (Alison Krauss), and Scott Vestal on banjo (Sam Bush). The LP also features harmony vocals by Jonathan Clark, Brian Whelan, Davey Faragher and newcomer Bryan Joyce.

    Feast Of The Hunters' Moon

Sugar Hill Records is proud to announce the upcoming release of Feast of the Hunters' Moon, the debut album from Portland, Oregon-based Black Prairie. Featuring three-fifths of The Decemberists and two of the city's finest folk stylists, the heavily acoustic debut was produced by Tucker Martine (The Decemberists, Death Cab for Cutie) and embodies the rich sonic landscape of the Portland music scene while integrating the diverse backgrounds of its members. As described by dobroist Chris Funk, the band's sound bridges the music of Clarence White and Ennio Morricone in a way that defies genre characterization.

Decemberists guitarist Funk and bassist Nate Query hatched the plan to start a primarily instrumental string band while on the road. Funk began to spend time playing the square-necked Dobro guitar, and the pair recruited fellow Decemberist Jenny Conlee to play accordion. Portland musicians Annalisa Tornfelt and Jon Neufeld then filled out the ranks on violin and guitar, respectively.

Black Prairie's songs consist mostly of instrumentals; their arrangements draw from bluegrass and old-time string band traditions, while Conlee's accordion and Tornfelt's violin instill klezmer and gypsy elements to the band's unique and vibrant sound. The quintet sometimes takes an almost-classical approach to composition, with songs containing multiple movements that ebb and flow in a way that differs greatly from traditional pop or bluegrass structure. The band decided it would be a shame not to make use of Tornfelt's vocal ability, so she sings on a handful of tracks as well. The thirteen album tracks include mostly original compositions by the five band members, with a smattering of traditional material intertwined throughout.
