The only people for me are the mad ones, mad to live, mad to talk, mad to be saved and desirous of everything" Jack Kerouac, 'On The Road' (1957) If 'On The Road' lead characters Sal Paradise and Dean Moriarty were modern day beatniks, they would find spirited company in Kanaku y El Tigre, a Peruvian collective who release their sophomore album (and first internationally), 'Quema, Quema, Quema', on Strut / Tiger's Milk in May 2015.'Quema Quema Quema' ('Burn Burn Burn' in Spanish) is the product of two years honing the Kanaku sound at the band's Lima studio. Dance Mania: Ghetto Madness

Strut return to the archives of seminal Chicago house label Dance Mania in January 2015 for 'Dance Mania: Ghetto Madness'. The follow-up to Strut's acclaimed Dance Mania label retrospective 'Hardcore Traxx' from early 2014, this new installment places the spotlight on the raw, stripped back, hyper bpms of ghetto house and the rise of the movement's fresh generation of stars during the mid' 90's including DJ Deeon, DJ Funk, Jammin' Gerald and DJ Milton. The album tells the story of the evolution of Chicago's sound during the era as mix tapes circulated through local stores and DJs developed their own underground following, playing local parties in the projects. Crowds began responding to faster bpms and gangsta rap-inspired X-rated lyrics. As DJ Deeon remembers, "it bridged the gap. It made it OK for guys in the ghetto to like house again and it brought the women onto the dance floor too." Dance Mania was perfectly positioned to capitalise on the new sound - many of the DJ's came regularly into Ray Barney's record store and, as Chicago's most trusted and respected label owner, he was offered the best tracks for commercial release at an early stage. 'Ghetto Madness' brings together some of the underground classics and enduring favourites that earned Dance Mania the title of 'Ghetto House's Motown'. Tracks include DJ Deeon's party-starter 'The Freaks', raw DJ Funk cut 'Computer Sex' and Nina Kraviz favourite, Paul Johnson's 'Give Me Ecstacy'. Other featured gems from the archive include the dark early Steve Poindexter outing 'Computer Madness' and Tyree's in-demand jam, 'Nuthin' Wrong'.

Inspiration Information: Amp Fiddler (Awaiting Repress)

This autumn brings the launch of a priority new series on Strut as the label takes a break from its schedule of funky compilations and moves into new studio recordings for the first time. Entitled Inspiration Information, the series brings together current artists and producers with their musical heroes for a mouth-watering one-off collaboration. The series kicks off with Detroit soul maverick Amp Fiddler in a head-to-head with reggae legends, Sly Dunbar & Robbie Shakespeare. Our manager told us about Amp, says Robbie. We heard that he used to be part of the Funkadelic set-up. We were always right into the Parlia-Funkadelic sound, recalls Sly. Their brand of funk was so different. I loved it from their first record. Me and Bootsy Collins are good friends he played on one of our albums and I always loved Motown too, ever since I was a kid. That all brought us closer to Amp and the musical groove just stuck. We hit it off from the first session.

Pat Thomas & Kwashibu Area Band (Awaiting Repress)

Strut are proud to announce the brand new studio album by one of Ghana's all-time great vocalists, "The Golden Voice Of Africa", Pat Thomas, in conjunction with the Kwashibu Area Band led by multi-instrumentalist Kwame Yeboah (Cat Stevens, Patrice) and saxophonist Ben Abarbanel-Wolff (Ebo Taylor, Poets of Rhythm). Hailing from Kumasi, Thomas had lived with highlife legend King Onyina from a young age before working with Ebo Taylor in two of Ghana's great 1960s highlife big bands, Broadway Dance Band and Stargazers. They would collaborate regularly, Pat contributing vocals to Ebo's solo albums and Ebo arranging horns for Pat's songs. Both would become a mainstay of the '70s and '80s Ghanaian highlife, afrobeat and afro-pop scenes, hitting big with the Ghana Cocoa Board-sponsored Sweet Beans band. Fela Kuti's bandleader, drummer Tony Allen, would record a session with Sweet Beans in Kumasi in 1975 (as yet unreleased). "Highlife was our music," Pat remembers. "People like Ebo and I modernised it, made it more relevant to our day. We took the Kwa music of Kumasi and other local styles and added Western elements." With his distinctive flowing vocal style, sung in Fanti and Ashanti Twi dialect, Pat became established as one of Ghana's biggest musical draws.

Features Extensive Sleeve Notes By Francis Gooding, An Interview With Saturn Records Founder Alton Abraham By John Corbett & Detailed Track-By-Track / Session Notes By Paul Griffiths

Strut & Art Yart present a new definitive collection of singles released by jazz maverick Sun Ra during his Earth years, spanning 1952 to 1991. Released prolifically during the 1950s and more sporadically thereafter, primarily on the Saturn label, the 45s offer one-off meteorites from Ra's prolific cosmic journey, tracing the development of his forward-thinking "Space-Bop" and his unique take on jazz and blues traditions which sounded unlike anything else from the period. As with his LPs, most 45s were only pressed in small runs and were sold at gigs and have since become extremely rare and sought after. Some have only been discovered in physical form in recent years; some were planned and penciled but allegedly never made it to vinyl and some appeared as one-off magazine singles and posthumous releases.

This release features fully re-mastered tracks, rare photos, poster artwork, extensive sleeve notes by Francis Gooding, an interview with Saturn Records founder Alton Abraham by John Corbett and detailed track by track and session notes by Paul Griffiths.

    Spirit Of Malombo (Awaiting Repress)

Following the label s acclaimed Next Stop Soweto compilation series, Strut returns to the rich music heritage of South Africa for another landmark compilation celebrating the influential and heavily political music of drummer Julian Bahula since the mid- 60s with the Malombo Jazz Makers, Jabula and Jazz Afrika bands. Bahula s first group was the Malombo Jazzmen, led by guitarist Philip Tabane with flautist Abbey Cindi and they broke the mould, introducing indigenous malombo drums alongside guitar and flute to create a strong new cultural jazz fusion. In 1964, the group took the Castle Lager jazz festival by storm, South Africa s biggest annual jazz event. Within a year, Bahula and Cindi had parted company with Tabane, and guitarist Lucky Ranku had come on board to form the Malombo Jazz Makers. By the end of the 1960s, they had established themselves as South Africa s foremost afro-centric jazz group. In 1971, they made a clandestine tour of South Africa with Steve Biko and TECON (Theatre Council of Natal) Players, using music and theatre to promote black awareness and identity as part of Biko s Black Consciousness message. As the pressure of apartheid started to bear down on them, Julian Bahula escaped to political exile in the UK. He settled in London in February 1973 following a tour with white afro-rock band Hawk. Joined by Lucky Ranku shortly afterwards, Bahula formed a new afro super-group, Jabula, through which malombo music was transformed into a vehicle that could take a powerful political message from South Africa to audiences in Europe and across the world. The band worked closely and selflessly with the exiled ANC, the Anti-Apartheid Movement and other anti-apartheid organisations to help spread political awareness. Bahula and his wife Liza also started London s first regular night to promote live African music at London s 100 Club during the 80s. In 83, they set up the first concert in the UK to raise awareness for Nelson Mandela, African Sounds , an event that helped to kickstart the international pressure that would lead to Mandela s release in 1990. The Specials Jerry Dammers was there and was inspired by Jabula s track Mandela to write the huge hit for The Special AKA, Nelson Mandela . Spirit Of Malombo documents Bahula s incredible musical journey from 1966 to 1984 for the first time. Package includes rare photos, poster artwork and memorabilia with extensive sleeve notes from author Francis Gooding. The cover features a still from leading South African photographer, Ernest Cole.

    Inner Fire (Awaiting Repress)

The Souljazz Orchestra return with another essential mystical odyssey in February 2014 as they release their brand new studio album, Inner Fire, on Strut. Recorded using the Orchestra's signature analogue techniques at their studio HQ in their home city of Ottawa, the new set continues their expansive musical journey as they effortlessly fuse intricate Eastern influences, Afro beats, Egyptian jazz, Latin styles and spiritual elements into their unique musical melting pot. The secret to the band's sound remains a true openness to global music of all kinds and the individual experiences of the Orchestra's band members. "We all have very wide tastes, we're always digging for new sounds, and we've had the chance to work with master musicians from all over, from Nigeria to Rwanda, from Cuba to Haiti, so each band member ends up bringing different vibes and ideas to each of our albums," explains keyboardist Pierre ChrÉtien. On Inner Fire, the different vibes come thick and fast. Side One features "Kingdom Come," a fierce afro-jazz stomper influenced by North-East African big band sounds, "One Life To Live," a haunting highlife arrangement on the importance of seizing the day, "As The Crow Flies," a soaring bossa-tinged piece and "Black Orchid," a bumping fusion of cinematic soul-jazz with Cuban bolero sounds. The flip brings us the firing salsa dura party jam "Agoya" before the ritual chant of "East Flows The River," a spiritual jazz hymn using Eastern modes. The tempo ramps up once more on "Sommet En Sommet," a heavy 12/8 afro-jazz piece influenced by Guinean popular music. Percussionist Marielle Rivard then takes the lead on vocals for a scorching personal rendition of Gary Bartz NTU Troop's 1971 classic, "Celestial Blues."The Souljazz Orchestra have become the undisputed leaders in their field since their first album back in 2005, breaking through with the huge international hit "Mista President" on Do Right! in 2007. Since then, the band has remained tight with their original line-up of Pierre ChrÉtien (keyboards), Zakari Frantz (alto sax & flute), Steve Patterson (tenor sax), Ray Murray (baritone sax), Marielle Rivard (percussion) and Philippe Lafrenière (drums). With their on-stage chemistry and stellar musicianship, the Orchestra's live shows have now become the stuff of legend, sparking instant parties wherever they play. 2013 was already a massive year for the band with their heaviest touring schedule to date. Highlights included a chaotic night playing to a sold-out crowd at New Morning in Paris, the band's first full US tours, high profile festival slots alongside Pharoah Sanders, Stevie Wonder and Raphael Saadiq and a 12-minute live "Battle Suite" packed full of classic and original breaks and beats for the B-Boy Battle Finals at Ottawa's annual House Of Paint hip hop festival. The band will be undertaking a Canadian tour to support the new album starting in February 2014, followed by a full European tour in March and April.

    Arthur's Landing (Discontinued) (On Sale)

Arthur's Landing is a broad collective of musicians that worked with the late and revered Downtown New York composer, cellist and singer Arthur Russell at different times during his career, from his experimental acoustic work (World Of Echo) to his disco-influenced projects (Loose Joints, Dinosaur L). Led by guitarist Steven Hall, the band is committed to sustaining the creative and performance ethic of his time and the line-up comprises a core of six members, all respected musicians in their own right, with guests joining for specific recordings and live shows.

The debut Arthur's Landing album comprises entirely new versions of Russell songs, some known, some never previously heard, and is produced and mixed by Brennan Green and the band's Peter Zummo. Tracks include a new mid-tempo update of the Loose Joints anthem Is It All Over My Face, re-worked as Love Dancing, Your Motion Says complete with Santur intro and In The Light Of The Miracle re-worked as Miracle 2 featuring original co-composer Elodie Lauten. Re-discovered Russell songs include the surreal I'll Be Fencing, voiced by bassist Ernie Brooks, previously only a demo idea.

    Appia Kwa Bridge

"I wanted to go back to a highlife feeling with this album," explains Ebo Taylor. "The songs are very personal and it is an important part of my music to keep alive many traditional Fante songs, war chants and children's rhymes."

Appia Kwa Bridge is a strident return from the Ghanaian highlife guitar legend. Featuring six new compositions, his sound is more dense and tightly locked than ever with Berlin-based musicians Afrobeat Academy, a rock solid unit since regular touring worldwide following his Love And Death album in 2010, including a string of dates for Womad. Jochen Stroh works his analogue magic once more from his base at Berlin's Lovelite Studios.

The album covers a variety of themes dear to Taylor. The title track references a small bridge in Ebo's hometown of Saltpond on the Cape Coast: "it is a tiny bridge but a place known in the town where people meet, where lovers get together." The firing, rousing Ayesama, first demoed during the Love And Death sessions, is a Fante war cry, a taunt, "what's your mother's name?"; Nsu Na Kwan, based on a Fante proverb, asks "Which is older, the river or the old road" with the sub-text to respect your elders; and the brilliant Abonsam carries the message that Abonsam (The Devil) is responsible for evil in the world and that we should follow the Christian message.

Elsewhere, the album features a new version of highlife anthem, Yaa Amponsah, first recorded during the '20s by Sam's Trio before becoming a popular standard in Ghana, and a cover of an original track from Taylor's time with Apagya Show Band during the '70s, Serwa Brakatu, re-titled here as Kruman Dey. The closer, the acoustic Barrima, is a poignant tribute to Taylor's first wife and one true love who sadly passed away during the Summer of 2011. "Ebo wrote the song following her passing and recorded this in one take during our last day in the studio," reflects bandleader Ben Abarbanel-Wolff. "He was very emotional." Survive is the long awaited, full-length from Garrison Hawk with Sly & Robbie. You can say he's a toaster, a rapper, an MC and undoubtedly a great writer, but most of all he's a bad ass singer. Wild is the party track; Murderer, What She Wants, Reggae Music and Don't Ya Know are the hooky business; Gangster For Life and Running Red have that uptempo Jamaican feel; Apocalypse features a stripped down Raga muffin style; and the title track is an anthem featuring Ethiopian artist Teddy Afro and Gigi.

'Super Afro Soul' was a true groundbreaker when it first surfaced in Nigeria in 1966 as a 10" album, a confident and effortless union of highlife, jazz and R&B, the music of Nigerian independence fused with the soundtrack to Afro-America's struggle for civil rights.

    In The Orbit Of Ra

Sun Ra is one of the most respected, and perhaps most misunderstood creative minds in jazz music. To commemorate what would have been Ra's 100th birthday, we've teamed up with Art Yard for a very special release. In The Orbit Of Ra is a new collection presented by the longest serving member of the Arkestra and current bandleader, Marshall Allen. Bringing together Sun Ra highights from over 25 years of music, the album is the first internationally released compilation to provide an introduction to the music of Sun Ra, all mastered from the original tapes.

Hear the pristine masters for one of our favorite Sun Ra tracks, "Plutonian Nights," below, and an instant download of the track is available with pre-orders of the full album. Physical formats feature full interview with Marshall Allen along with rare and previously unpublished photos by Val Wilmer.

    First Light's Freeze

A dark, mutant-country sound infused with strands of free-jazz and a late-70's Nashville big-radio strut hijacked by post-punk unravelers. The result is a beautiful mix of somber reflection, destination-unknown travelogue, and subversive anti-war boogie. Freeze confronts the mythology of war and friendship; the close proximity of things painful and pleasurable, and the complications of this as a paradigm for the world. Castanets suggest artistic geography as transcontinental as Merle Haggard, Albert Ayler, Television, and Richard and Mimi Farina.

Alive! is the hardest funk LP Grant Green recorded during the later phase of his career, capturing a storming gig at Newark's ClichÉ Lounge. The sweaty club atmosphere adds something to the music that's difficult to pin down, yet unmistakably present -- a certain organic quality that isn't as noticeable on Green's studio albums of the time. Moreover, Green sounds more like the captain of his ship, with greater assurance in his musical direction and more strut on the R&B material.
