Drumming (Pure Pleasure) (Pre-Order)Simply put, Drumming is, along with some of Philip Glass' Einstein On The Beach, one of the most fascinating pieces of first-generation minimalism. The version recorded for Elektra/Nonesuch in 1987 ranks among Reich's masterpieces. The 60-minute continuous work features one basic rhythm pattern. Throughout four segued movements it is multiplied, played in canon on various percussion instruments. Part I is for four pairs of tuned bongo drums; Part II for three marimbas (played by nine players) and two singers mimicking the sound of marimbas; Part III for three glockenspiels, piccolo, and whistling (played by Reich himself); Part IV for all previous instruments, including voices. Transitions between movements are gradual, the whole piece being built on accumulation and reduction. When it is time to go to the next movement, players are slowly removed, quarter-notes replaced by rests, in order to make room for the new instruments. The piece almost comes to a complete halt at the end of Part III, keeping only the most basic pulse before the whole process starts over, building up to the finale. There is a sense of happiness and lightness irradiating from Drumming. It is a perfect example of the paradox of the simple and the complex, the easy and the challenging underlying minimalist music. Both cerebral and vitally tribal or ritualistic, this album is a must-have.

About Pure Pleasure
At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.
During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.
A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.
We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.
We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.
To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.1. Part I

RingerThe Ringer mini album is a 32 minute, four-track excursion into the kind of wide-open spaces you might find if you set out to make techno with an afrobeat/ krautrock sensibility. Ringer locks together gloriously rich synthesizer arpeggios; ôWing Body Wingö slips from crisp clusters of disco percussion to Steve Reich polyrhythms; and in between are another two euphoric ripples of sound, ôRibbonsö and ôSwimmer.ö The techno heartbeat comes from Kieran HebdenÆs regular DJ residences over the last couple of years as well as his ongoing collaborations with legendary jazz drummer Steve Reid. Whether in the studio or live, Kieran and Steve often click into the kind of deep 4/4 grooves that can depart in any direction with a little adjustment. Ringer carries that minimal pulse over into Four Tet, and while KieranÆs trademark recuttings of jazz breaks may be less in evidence, his feel for harmony and melody is, as always, unmistakable.1. The Unexamined LifeSupreme Dicks put out one single in their career. It was a double B-side. Maybe they had a sense of humor, but in hindsight it's hard to tell.
Falling somewhere between Captain Beefheart, Throbbing Gristle and SALEM in the lineage of musicians who've found a muse in the nasty, brutish brevity of life, Supreme Dicks chose to cloak disarmingly real paranoia and grief in the contemporary trappings of late '80s and early '90s lo-fi college rock. They may have inhabited the same sonic and physical space as colleagues like Dinosaur jr. (Lou Barlow was an occasional Dick, and at least one early Dinosaur jr show was actually played by Dicks in disguise), but they stripped away all youthful yearning and anticipation in favor of a bleak and unblinking certainty. Honest, frank, and free of ironic distance. Obtuse and yet so essential that it can't help but feel familiar to anyone who's ever spent a sleepless night wondering whether there's any point to all of this. And, on occasion, warm, intimate and lovely.
The Supreme Dicks formed while students at Massachusetts' Hampshire College in the twilight of the Reagan era. The campus was a fractured post-hippie free-for-all that many students theorized was a right-wing think tank experiment in pitting progressives against each other. The constantly revolving lineup centered around Daniel Oxenberg, Jon Shere, Steve Shavel, Mark Hanson, Jim Spring, and whoever else was around and willing to torture an instrument. They advocated the teachings of Wilhelm Reich and were vocal about focusing their creative energy via celibacy. This may do much to explain the constant, unrelenting tension that provides the driving force behind the most powerful moments in their music. Regardless of tempo or arrangement, Supreme Dicks songs play like soundtracks to autoerotic asphyxiation, haunting tones that ring in the ears at the moment consciousness is lost and not guaranteed to return.
Jagjaguwar is proud to reintroduce the complete recordings of Supreme Dicks in the form of Breathing and Not Breathing, a four CD set that includes both of the band's studio albums, The Unexamined Life from 1993 and The Emotional Plague from 1996, along with 1994's Workingman's Dick, a collection of early archival recordings, and the 1996 EP This Is Not A Dick, which has been fleshed out with rare and unreleased tracks. Selected Ambient Works Vol. 2Aphex Twins 1994 masterpiece Selected Ambient Works Volume II includes barely anything resembling a beat or any sign of typical song structure, yet the album continues to garner adulation generally reserved for holy music. Fans have been testifying on its behalf for nearly two decades, as if it were capable of curing ills or healing the soul. Its synthetic construction belies the intuitive, human, melancholic and uplifting nature of the music.
Some have speculated the album was intended by Aphex Twins Richard D. James as a farce, as if its Über-minimalism was a joke played on an electronic community that relied so heavily on the beat; an expectation-defying statement from ambient-houses young hero. The album induces varied responses and often from the same person. A listener may go from being incredulous to drenched in tears within the span of a single track. Music critic Frank Owen described the music as veering between an eerie beauty and an almost nightmarish desolation. James himself described it as like standing in a power station on acid.
The albums raw emotional power is built upon the influences of Brian Eno, Erik Satie, Steve Reich, Terry Riley and The Orb. Each of its tracks has an elegiac and desolate feel far removed from the tooth-rattling, drill-n-bass or abstract electronica for which James was originally known. The soft, nimble flow leaves one in a tranquilized state. Throughout the album, James resists the temptation to layer the sound with beats or samples. Instead, he relies on swathes of sound and harmonics and almost-implied pulses. When the music does incorporate subtle industrial sounds, rhythmic drums or muted samples, it is only to affect a menacing feel in the textures.
Remarkably, for an album that is often perceived as difficult, Selected Ambient Works Volume II is quite accessible. Featured in films, commercials and video games, the music continues to offer an entry point for listeners new to the ambient genre while remaining a classic touted by connoisseurs. No tracklist available$33.99Vinyl LP - 3 LPs Sealed Buy Now
PassagesPassages is a collaborative chamber music studio album co-composed by Ravi Shankar and Philip Glass, released in 1990. The album is a hybrid of Hindustani Classical music and Glass' distinct American minimal contemporary Classical style.
A collaboration between an avant-garde modern Classical composer and a traditional Indian/Hindi composer/performer seems pretty unlikely. However, Passages works splendidly. Shankar's smooth style fits nicely with Glass' dissonant orchestrations.
The album reached a peak position of number three on Billboard's Top World Music Albums chart. Recommended to fans of other minimalist composers such as John Cage, Steve Reich and Terry Riley.1. Offering

The Metallic YearImbogodom are the UK's Alexander Tucker and New Zealand's Daniel Beban. The Metallic Year is their Thrill Jockey debut and first release under the Imbogodom moniker. Mutual friends in sound exploration, this Trans-Atlantic duo create other-worldly transmissions where improvisation gives way to mutated song forms and intricate soundscapes. The Metallic Year is a collection of eerie tracks where sound collage and unraveling songs present a haunted world of spooling atmospheres, warped instrumentation, and disembodied voices. The nocturnal creations were inspired by the tape experiments of BBC's Radiophonics Workshop, Terry Riley, Steve Reich, and their love of New Zealand musician Alastair Galbraith. Bryce Dessner: Aheym
45 RPM Mastered Double Gatefold LP
LP Contains CD of Full Album
Aheym is an astonishing collaboration between National
guitarist Bryce Dessner and journeyman new music string
quartet the Kronos Quartet. Performing four compositions by
Dessner, the Kronos Quartet champion an exciting young
composer, continuing a history of presenting new and
important works and composers that stretches back to their
founding in 1973. Dessner has a history of composition that
predates his membership in the National, and represents a new
generation who are blurring the lines between rock and
contemporary classical music.
From the raw emotional
overtones of Aheym to the soaring choral crescendo - courtesy
of the Brooklyn Youth Chorus - of Tour Eiffel, Bryce Dessner's
music for the Kronos Quartet will delight longtime followers of
Kronos' work with Steve Reich, Philip Glass and others, and will
challenge and surprise the National's many fans. At the close of
day, Aheym addresses many of the same aches and dreams as
the music of the National, and it is the breaking down of these
artificial barriers of genre and performance that Bryce Dessner

Struggle For PleasureClassical by Music On Vinyl proudly presents its first release. Wim Mertens has released Struggle For Pleasure in 1983 under the group name Soft Verdict. Later, it would be released under his own name.
Mertens called the music on Struggle For Pleasure 'petite musique de chambre', small chamber music. The six compositions are topped by ''Close Cover'' that proved to be a massive single. There are lots of documentaries and films that still use this beautiful arrangement.

ADAD-SOC-6219xSian Alice Group
The title of their debut comes from its running time. It's an epic record that showcases the talent, range, and ambition of this young group, taking in elements of various genres and making them their own. Sian Alice Group's more classical inclinations show their willingness to tread their own path. Comparisons can be made to Arthur Russell, Angelo Badalamenti, and Steve Reich. The album features contributions from Douglas Hart (Jesus & Mary Chain), John Coxon (Spiritualized, Spring Heel Jack), and Brian DeGraw (Gang Gang Dance). Club MedsAfter a two year hiatus, an induction into fatherhood, and some time to regroup, two-time JUNO Award-winner Dan Mangan has returned under a new moniker, Dan Mangan + Blacksmith. The new name encompasses the spirit of the project's longstanding ensemble members joining the band from Vancouver's experimental music community, Kenton Loewen, Gordon Grdina, John Walsh (and often Jesse Zubot, JP carter and Tyson Naylor) with a communal sensibility that merits the marquee amendment.
Produced by Colin Stewart and Dan Mangan, Club Meds at times evokes images of subtler American-underground innovators like Blonde Redhead or Steve Reich. At other moments, it hits emotional pay dirt reminiscent of British scene-survivors like Peter Gabriel or Radiohead. Blacksmith brings an unmistakable character to Club Meds; a stark glassy edge that swells and sways like a roaring ocean. Collects Together For The First Time The Definitive Collection Of Bowie's Music From 1964 To 2014
NOTHING HAS CHANGED released by Columbia Records/Legacy Recordings collects together for the first time the definitive collection of Bowie's music from 1964 to 2014.
Fifty years on from his first recordings, David Bowie continues to be at the vanguard of contemporary culture as a musician, artist, icon and a nonpareil to generations of writers, artists and fashionistas. He remains to be a unique presence in contemporary culture.
NOTHING HAS CHANGED (named after a lyric from the 'Heathen' album opener 'Sunday') compiles tracks from every period of Bowie's career from his earliest incarnations with 'Liza Jane' and 'Can't Help Thinking About Me' right up to James Murphy's 'Hello Steve Reich Mix' of 'Love Is Lost' from last year.
The album features Bowie's first new music since he stunned the world with the critically lauded 'THE NEXT DAY'. The new single 'SUE (or IN A SEASON OF CRIME)' was especially recorded for NOTHING HAS CHANGED with long time collaborator Tony Visconti.
Alongside the brand new track NOTHING HAS CHANGED features the previously unreleased 'Let Me Sleep Beside You' from the 'TOY' sessions, the download only 'Your Turn To Drive' making its debut on CD and the stunning 2001 re-recording of the 1971 outtake 'Shadow Man'.LP 1

AmberAmber, the second full-length from Autechre and considered by many to be their ambient opus (though we imagine they wouldn't call it that!) having been out of print on vinyl since 2001. Amber contains eleven tracks of sparse Ae minimalist machine modules that blur the boundaries between isolationist electronica and richly vivid techno soundscapes. Considered by many fans to be the most crucial recording from the group, it contains some of their most immersive soundscapes to date. Steering away from the post-hardcore dynamics that shone through on Incunabula, Amber moves further away from anything resembling 'techno' and moved into more territories of abstract ambience. These eleven crystal-like cubes of sound came together to produce some of the most mind-bendingly hypnotic sounds to be committed to wax during the 90's. Placing Ae up in the ranks of legendary composers such as Steve Reich and Manuel Gottsching as well as their Artificial Intelligence contemporaries with whom they were crafting the building blocks of the future. There is something uniquely immersive about Amber, it's almost as if as you are playing it the sounds are fading away before they even begin, when played from the start you can lose a lot of time within the endless gradients that adorn its cover, before the sounds just seemingly, disappear.1. High LifeWritten and recorded across a series of recording sessions in April of 2014 (some of which were open to selected media from around the world), none of the music on High Life existed before Someday World was completed! The resulting record, at 6 tracks and 45 minutes, is the clearest expression yet of the 'Reichkuti' (Steve Reich meets Fela Kuti) direction that first brought the Eno Hyde collaboration into being. And as the polyrhythms and melodies build, swirl and syncopate, the album feels truly alive with the energy of this time in the studio. High Life reunites Eno and Hyde with the 20 year old producer/multi-instrumentalist Fred Gibson, previous Eno-collaborator Leo Abrahams on guitar, drummer Chris Vatalaro, and keyboardist Don E. Taken alongside Someday World, it provides a fascinating insight in to how consistent influences can lead to very different but connected music, and continues to tell the story of two iconic musicians collaborating and exploring together. We look forward to seeing how fans select their own favorites across the two albums.LP1

All We GrowThe debut album from S. Carey, All We Grow, is the result of a young lifetime spent immersed in music. As a band member of Bon Iver from the very beginning, Sean Carey witnessed a flip of his formal training to step firmly into a worldwide-touring rock band. His performance degree in classical percussion from the University of Wisconsin and his love for jazz drumming prepared him for a central role in the inspiring force of the Bon Iver live show.
All We Grow is a convergence of Carey's Waltz For Debby-era Bill Evans inflected jazz tendencies, and traditional rock band experience, taking leads from Mark Hollis' Talk Talk. It also retests the waters of modern classical composition, investigating the moodiness generated by percussive repetition in a manner familiar to fans of Steve Reich. In his downtime on tour with Bon Iver, Sean would spend time composing. During infrequent tour breaks at home he would patiently record these pieces, adding layers eachtime. Two years later, the parts converged to make an album.
For as much room to breathe as Carey allows his compositions, there are incredibly dynamic moments of bombast held right next to moments of subtle depth and texture. Engineered by Jaime Hansen and Brian Joseph, intermittently at home and at April Base (Justin Vernon's studio outside Eau Claire), All We Grow is an all-encompassing headphone experience as intimate as chamber music and as ambitious as a symphony.1. Sarah Neufeld is a violinist and composer based in MontrÉal, Canada. Best known as a member of Arcade Fire, she is also a founding member of the acclaimed contemporary instrumental ensemble Bell Orchestre and has performed and recorded with many other groups, including The Luyas, Esmerine and Little Scream.
Neufeld began developing pieces for solo violin in a more formal and focused sense in 2011, though she has made improvisation and solo composition part of her process and practice since first picking up the instrument at a young age. Neufeld counts Bela Bartok, Steve Reich, Iva Bittova and Arthur Russell among the formative influences for her solo work, in tandem with an ear for the textures and sensibilities of contemporary electro-acoustic, avant-folk and indie rock music.
Neufeld's debut solo album Hero Brother indeed channels all of the above, flowing through shifting atmospheres and oscillating between restrained, stately ambience, emotive Études, and raw kinetic energy. Small touches of wordless vocalisation, harmonium and piano supplant the violin in a few places. The album was recorded in Berlin by pianist and producer Nils Frahm, with Neufeld's performances captured in a number of locations with site-specific acoustics, including an abandoned geodesic dome, an underground parking garage, and the legendary Studio P4 orchestral recording hall at the broadcast complex of the former GDR.1. REDD-ROY-4793xBrian Haas & Matt Chamberlain
FramesThe debut Brian Haas & Matt Chamberlain album Frames features 11 instrumental compositions that spiral through the tempered scale. A through-composed work for piano and percussion, it was written entirely by Haas, the internationally renowned pianist and founder of Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey. Now based in Santa Fe, Haas wrote Frames as a suite, equally influenced by stride piano masters Earl Hines, James P. Johnson and Fats Waller; the early minimalist works of Philip Glass and Steve Reich; and the lush aesthetic of modernists James Blake, Flying Lotus and Nigel Godrich. The music is pastoral, intensely melodic and tells the story of an imagined human life.
"After several years of non-stop touring with my band Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey I felt completely drained," explains Haas. "I was pulled to move to the high desert and mountains of Sante Fe; the space/distance from the road, the unearthly view from my house and the strange hum of my new surroundings inspired this music. What started as an exercise in all 12 keys turned into Frames."
Brian Haas has recorded 21 albums and toured the world for two decades with Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, a band he started while a student at The University of Tulsa. Grammy Award-winning drummer Matt Chamberlain is one of the most revered musicians of his time having toured and recorded with the likes of Brad Mehldau, Edie Brickell & The New Bohemians, Critters Buggin, Tori Amos, Bill Frisell and Frank Ocean among others.1. St. Carolyn By The Sea / Suite From 'There Will Be Blood'Dessner: St. Carolyn By The Sea; Greenwood: Suite From 'There Will Be Blood'
Never before have classical and rock converged in such an organic, compelling and sensual way as they do in the three short orchestral works written by and featuring The National guitarist Bryce Dessner on his new release St. Carolyn by the Sea, performed with the Copenhagen Phil and conducted by Andree de Ridder.
Dessner presents three pieces of modern classical music, written from the perspective of a rock musician who is keenly aware of the raw emotional impact music any music can have on an audience. He draws on elements from Baroque and folk music, late Romanticism and modernism, minimalist music and the blues, among others, as well as referencing the work of such legendary figures as John Fahey, La Monte Young, Bela Bartook, Glenn Branca, Benjamin Britten, Morton Feldman, Philip Glass and Steve Reich. Despite this broad spectrum of influences, his voice remains individual and distinct.
With this album, which also showcases a suite drawn from Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwoods soundtrack for There Will Be Blood, Bryce Dessner and Jonny Greenwood open up a new frontier for symphonic music.BRYCE DESSNER
