Steely Dan Vinyl'
AjaRanked 145/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
Long argued as one of the (if not THE) best rock recording ever and a permanent fixture on many a demo system in the late '70s and '80s, Aja was the culmination of everything Donald Fagen and Walter Becker aspired to accomplish in their storied careers. It was the first album certified platinum (eventually selling more than 5 million copies in the U.S.) by the then-new RIAA sales tracking system. It made Steely Dan superstars. It contained three ubiquitous U.S. Top 40 singles in Peg, Josie and Deacon Blues, though each of the seven tracks are wonderful.
Steely Dan's meticulously crafted sixth album was Walter Becker and Donald Fagen's stab at becoming mainstream jazz-pop superstars. And thanks to sweet, smart, slippery tracks like Deacon Blues and Peg, they did just that - and won a Grammy for Best Engineered album too.1. Black Cow

Donald Fagen's (one half of Steely Dan), fourth solo album for Warner Reprise, Sunken Condos, will be released on October 16. His first three solo albums, The Nightfly, Kamakiriad and Morph the Cat comprised the project known as the Nightfly Trilogy. Sunken Condos begins a new chapter in in the creative evolution of this innovative artist, whose career is still going strong after forty years.
The nine tracks on Sunken Condos were co-produced by Michael Leonhart and Donald. All but one track, an Ashkenazi recasting of Isaac Hayes' Out of the Ghetto, are new Fagen originals. Some familiar names from the Steely Dan family of players are on hand (Jon Herington, the Steely Dan horns, Freddie Washington) plus some new faces. FM Original SoundtrackAppropriately, the soundtrack for the 1978 movie FM feels like a radio play list of the era, collecting songs from Joe Walsh, Randy Meisner, Boz Scaggs, and other '70s radio staples. Steely Dan's title track, Queen's We Will Rock You, Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band's Night Moves, Billy Joel's Just The Way You Are, and Boston's More Than a Feeling are some of the highlights from this double-disc set, which also includes tracks from Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Foreigner, and Linda Ronstadt, all of whom also appeared in the film. Though FM itself wasn't exactly a box-office smash, its soundtrack is a surprisingly durable and entertaining collection of classic rock that is arguably better than many of the '70s rock compilations available today.

In 1972 few groups could have had their single nominated as Tony Blackburn's hit-pick while simultaneously being championed by underground DJ John Peel, Manchester pop quartet 10CC did just that. 10CC's music has always been able to be taken on a number of levels, and even though this was the glam era they felt a greater affinity with Americans Steely Dan. Their clever lyrics certainly put them in the Becker-Fagen bracket. The highlights of this long-player are still very much present and correct, so enjoy a return to those glorious vinyl days...1. Takin' It To The Streets (On Sale)Moving away from their brand of Boogie Rock, Takin' It To The Streets introduced Steely Dan's Michael McDonald to the band which resulted in an new direction to these California Pop rockers' sound. More polished, more soulful, funkier and with a varied set of catchy songs, Takin' It To The Streets (1976) meant a new and successful start for the already established Boogie Rock band.
Regarded by many as their most creative period, the late seventies resulted in some great sounding, well balanced and interesting albums of which Takin' It To The Streets was arguably one of the best. High, Low And In BetweenHigh, Low And In Between was Townes Van Zandt's fifth album, originally released by Poppy Records in the fall of 1971. It was a release that saw Townes becoming the songwriter revered today. An album full of brilliant original material including "You Are Not Needed Now," Blue Ridge Mountains," and "To Live Is To Fly," it opened eyes and ears to his abilities. His backing band included folks like Larry Carlton-who would play on Joni Mitchell's Court & Spark, accompany Steely Dan on The Royal Scam (playing that solo we all know and love on "Kid Charlemagne"), and who was a member of Jazz's elite Crusaders.
High, Low And In Between is-in the end-a classic Townes Van Zandt album. And one that should be reexamined. This gloriously remastered edition comes with liner notes from award-wining scribe Colin Escott, as well as on 180-gram vinyl-with the first 1,000 pressed on orange colored stock. Known for their ability of churning out hit songs, top charting albums and sell-out shows across the globe, The Doobie Brothers continue to be a force in the music business garnering them success now for over four decades.
1975 was a banner year for the band as they took their Bay Area soul and rock driven sounds to a further dimension thanks to the hits on their fifth smash LP Stampede. Produced by Ted Templeman, this platinum event would go on to become one of the most successful albums by The Doobie Brothers as the LP gave them a huge number one single with the Motown classic Take Me In Your Arms (Rock Me A Little While).
Fronted by the triple lead guitar force of Tom Johnston, Patrick Simmons, & newest addition Steely Dan's Jeff "Skunk Baxter. plus Tiran Porter on bass, and the dual drummers John Hartman and the late great Keith Knudsen, The Doobie Brothers continued their trek to the top of the music charts. Stampede went deeper with album radio thanks to more amazing hits like the rockers Sweet Maxine and the tour de force guitar workout on Neal's Fandango.
Friday Music is proud once again to offer another installment in our ever popular Doobie Brothers 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl Series with their masterpiece Stampede. It's Like ThisThis lovely set of intimately arranged and meticulously recorded covers, originally issued in 2000, is precisely the kind of semi-obscure album in need of a quality all-analog reissueThe superbly natural sound produced by this record is what spending big bucks on an audio system is all about. Set the volume appropriately and Ms. Jones'll draw you into the studio for a personal song recitalThis is one to savor. Music = 9/11; Sound = 10/11 Michael Fremer, www.musicangle.com
this effort from 2000 shows Jones conjuring such magic with the material that she deserves as much attention for reworking standards as do Carly Simon or Linda Ronstadt. Kicking off with Steely Dan's 'Show Biz Kids,' and with appearances by Joe Jackson and Ben Folds, among the highpoints is the Beatles' 'For No One' that ranks as among the finest Beatles cover ever. And considering that they number in the tens of thousands, that's about as high as praise gets. Recording = 5/5; Performances = 5/5 Album of the Month Ken Kessler, Hi-Fi News, April 2008
The Rickie Lee Jones 45rpm is AWESOME UNREAL AMAZING!!! I have to get a backup copy. I'll play this one to death. Danny Kaey, Positive-Feedback Online
Not since Billie Holiday has there been a vocalist who so completely transforms a song into her own. On It's Like This, eclectic folkie Rickie Lee Jones envelops standards, showtunes, '70s soul, and even slick jazz-rock, interpreting them with her familiar childlike, breathy shouts. In a very similar vein as 1991's Pop Pop, Jones pulls together a collection of diverse songs from throughout the 20th century and gives them a sparse, fragile spin, kind of like Diana Krall and Bjork sharing coffee at an all-night diner. Produced by Bruce Brody (who has also worked with Maria McKee and Bette Midler), this album is really a showcase for the dynamic vocalist - her voice pitching and yawing like a sloop far out at sea. Several notable artists scatter themselves unobtrusively throughout the album like Joe Jackson, Ben Folds, John Pizzarelli, and Taj Mahal; each lend a subtle bass line or harmony vocal, cautiously not stepping on any of Jones' delicate lines.1. Toto XIVTOTO XIV is the band s first album of new material since 2006 s Falling In Between. However, the band personally considers the new album to be the true follow-up to TOTO IV, which made the band global superstars. The album is a realized vision three plus decades in the making, exhibiting world-class musicianship, masterful arrangements, topical lyrical commentary, and melodies that the collective genius of Lukather, Paich, Porcaro, Williams and their assembled band-mates bring to life. The band s current line-up includes original members Steve Lukather, David Paich and Steve Porcaro and sees the return to the fold of original bass player, David Hungate. New Masses For Squaw PeakNew Masses for Squaw Peak gifts unto us bold, surprising new textures and denser, cheekier ideas and themes. Its packed tight with style: gauze-flange experimentation; jazz-chord death-pop; shifty proto-prog; historical and personal mythologies weaved through its passages. Yet, claustrophobic it is not. New Masses for Squaw Peak is as wide-open of a landscape as its title may suggest. It is also a well-traveled collection of songs: laid to tape in the belly of an abandon Philadelphia textile factory; run through three mixing boards by three separate sets of hands; and ultimately sculpted into its final form by the gentlemen to conjured it in the first place. And oh joy, what conjuring.
Mystics Pharaohs (Masc. Pharaohs) begins with a big, fat wink to Enos Here Come the Warm Jets (a hallmark of Squaw Peak) before descending into its own purply blackhole of dark, dissonant whitefunk. A metallic sonic fog allows guitar stabs and squalls, and the pings of ringleader Nathan Pembertons vocal calls, to hit you twice then thrice, then unravel out into the cosmos. All players here (multi-instrumentalists Josh Martin and Brian Forfa; and drummer John Frank) are using both sides of the brain at every turn, the instinctual, tribal rhythm with which we are born and the semi-learned, nervy way we manipulate that instinct. The instinct that tells us to stay and play inside our comfort zone, and the secret instinct to see what lies just beyond its boundary. Cor-Du-Roi, another standout, is almost perpendicular to Mystics Pharoahs with its shambling, assured pace and melodies all tinny and distant. Its a risky number for Holiday Shores in its maturity and subtle composition. It also just might be their most inspired, beautiful piece to date. We find this kind of maturity and patience again with deep-cut Coming to Shores, an ambient-pop sci-fi wash that almost falls into the new classical phylum.
Pemberton and Martin prove time and again that they share more than just a keyboard table in the live setting; they share an endlessly searching, creative brain. Pembertons jazz keyboards are often interlocked with Martins plinkety-plankety lyrical guitar. On Shadie Spun Gold and in other spots, like pulsing leadoff track Airglow their separately played parts are hocketed to create the larger melody, with notes falling just left of where Steely Dan might drop them (which sounds awesome). Holiday Shores might be prog-rock in the way that Ariel Pink might be prog-rock. Its shape-shifting pop songcraft that will slip from your fingers like a sea cucumber the very second you think you have hold.1. Airglow

TotoToto was founded in 1977 by some of the most experienced session musicians of that time.
The members of Toto were regulars on albums by Steely Dan, Seals and Crofts, Boz Scaggs, Sonny and Cher, and many others, contributing to many of the most popular records of the 1970s.
The band enjoyed great commercial success in the late 1970s and 1980s, starting with the band's self-titled debut released in 1978.
It includes the hit singles 'Hold the Line', 'I'll Supply the Love' and 'Georgy Porgy' and the album gained a reputation when released for its characteristic sound, mixing soft pop with both synth and hard rock elements.
The band still has a good reputation as selling out arenas all over the world proves.

Often considered one of his finest albums since the classic Ringo Lp from 1973, Time Takes Time would become one of the Ringo Starr's most loved works and one of the finer rock recordings of 1992. Featuring the hit single Weight Of The World, Time Takes Time would be the centerpiece of this Beatle's highly successful All Starr Band tour later that year and beyond.
Whenever the legendary Ringo Starr makes a record, there's always a little help from his superstar friends like producers Jeff Lynne, Don Was, Peter Asher and the late Phil Ramone, who all contributed their studio expertise into making Time Takes Time the stellar work that it is.
Along with musicians the caliber of The Beach Boys' Brian Wilson, the late great Harry Nilsson, Steely Dan's Jeff Baxter, and alternate rockers Jellyfish, Time Takes Time would soon become one of the more important albums of the year. While the hit single Weight Of The World became a Ringo Starr fan favorite immediately upon its release, more classics abounded as the rockin' Jeff Lynne produced classic Don't Go Where The Road Don't Go truly shines.
More heartfelt classics like All In The Name Of Love and the magical Don't Know A Thing About Love (penned by Heartbreaker Stan Lynch), as well as The Posie's Golden Blunders truly made this a wonderful listen from start to finish. As CD's were the format of choice in 1992, this fine recording was only released for a short time only in most parts of the world until now ..
Friday Music is very honored to announce the first time North American vinyl release of the Ringo Starr classic Time Takes Time. Music From The Hit TV Show
A Score Focused On Percussion And African Sound
Cut in the birth pangs of electric fusion and afro-funk, West Coast drummer Shelly Manne's brilliant score for the popular '60's TV series Daktari still stands as a global fusion landmark.
Daktari is an album by drummer Shelly Manne recorded in 1967 featuring music from Daktari. The heavy use of the marimba with various percussion instruments serves the score well and makes it a huge success.
On the album, Mike Wofford plays a tack piano to evoke an African sound, and Manne is joined by percussionists Emil Richards, Larry Bunker, Frank Carlson, and Victor Feldman. According to the record liner notes, Manne and fellow percussionists play ankle and wrist jingles, Thai mouth organs, angklungs, ocarinas, vibraphones, tympani, and different kinds of marimbas.
Steely Dan guitarist Walter Becker was a fan of the album's 'vaguely African' music, sounding like it came from Hollywood session players rather than actual Africans. In the late 1990s, Becker modelled a percussion sequence after this style on the song Two Against Nature released on the Steely Dan album of the same name.1. Daktari

Lay Me DownAnalogue Productions proudly brings you Lay Me Down, alternative rock /folk / pop diva Nancy Bryans stunning debut album of original songs touching on a variety of emotions from apocalyptic visions and the struggle of the inner soul to sensitively spun tales of love spinning out of control.
Nancy has been likened to Joni Mitchell and Sarah McLachlan but with an edge. Lay Me Down features an all-star group of musicians including producer /guitarist John Koenig, bassists Dan Schwartz (Tuesday Music Club, Linda Perry, Sheryl Crow and more), Jimmy Johnson (James Taylor and more) and Jerry Scheff (Elvis Costello, Roy Orbison, Elvis Presley and more), drummers Burleigh Drummond (Ambrosia) and Peter Erskine (Weather Report, Steely Dan and more) and songwriter, acoustic guitarist and vocalist John Bryan.
Nancy Bryan has a crystalline soprano and a mournful songwriting sensibility, highlighted by one of the most dynamic and timbrally pure recordings I've heard in a long time...the disc sounds naturally ambient, crisp and articulate.

ADAD-SUI-6512xMinus The Bear
Planet of IceRemastered By Bernie Grundman
Following the success of Highly Refined Pirates' forward-thinking guitar gymnastics and Menos El Oso's groundbreaking glitch rock, Seattle's premier pop revisionists Minus The Bear dug into some of rock music's most ostentatious years for inspiration for their 2007 album, Planet of Ice. The title alone conjures images of Yes's Relayer album art, and the influence of the elder statesmen's symphonic scope can be felt throughout Planet of Ice's lush and intricate arrangements. You can also hear the band channel the ominous instrumental interplay of Lamb-era Genesis on Dr. L'Ling, the deceptively savvy musicianship and pristine production of Steely Dan on White Mystery, and the tightrope walk between ethereal space and pre-metal riffage of Pink Floyd's Echoes on Lotus. Not that Minus The Bear completely abandoned their earlier style?elements of Menos El Oso's sample-driven technique can be heard on the lead single Knights. But the heart of the song ultimately belongs to the haunting Fripp-esque guitar lines spliced between verses. After being out of print on record since 2010, Suicide Squeeze is proud to reintroduce Planet of Ice's creative marriage of classic motifs and modern musical wizardry with a vinyl remaster courtesy of Bernie Grundman.1.
