    The North

For more than a decade now, Stars have been winning over audiences with their sensitive, dreamy indie pop tunes. On September 4, the band will release their latest full-length offering, The North, via their own Soft Revolution Records imprint in Canada and via ATO Records south of the border. For fans who just can't wait until the disc is in stores, you can hear the whole thing now on Exclaim.ca.

The 12-song album was co-produced by Stars along with Marcus Paquin (Arcade Fire, Little Scream) and Graham Lessard (Plants & Animals, Young Galaxy) at RCA Victor Studios in Montreal. It is Stars' sixth album overall and follows 2010's The Five Ghosts.

Fans of Stars' past work are sure to find more material to enjoy here, since tracks like The Theory of Relativity and Hold On When You Get Love and Let Go When You Give It show the band at their most dreamy and pop-oriented, while the charging Backlines is slightly more rocking but will all Stars' signature sweetness.

Under The Bushes Under The Stars

Under The Bushes Under The Stars is made up of unforgettable riffs, infectious vocal melodies, and little else - hinting at stadium-sized ambitions while keeping the songs themselves human-sized. By remaining tethered to the lo-fi aesthetic but thinking big, Under The Bushes, Under The Stars is propelled by a sense of tension that the band hasn't really explored
    since.

    -Stereogum

In November 1995 Guided By Voices handed in their darkest and most obscure record to date. The 60-odd songs the band had recorded in 24-track studios had all been scrapped. Chief Robert Pollard was adamant about releasing a home-taped album "as is, no compromises, man,"; citing his dissatisfaction with the hi-fi material.

Then Bob changed his mind and went into another 24-track studio and banged out the majority of the songs on Under The Bushes Under The Stars in two days. The results are Guided By Voices' clearest and most ecstatic album to date. A fabulous introductory record for new fans confused by the amount of Guided By Voices catalog in the racks, Under The Bushes also contains new songs to trigger synapses in their devoted core audience.

    Easy Star's Thrillah

Following up on the hugely successful reggae tribute albums of Dub Side of the Moon (2003), Radiodread (2006) and Easy Star's Lonely Hearts Dub Band (2009) comes the reggae adaptation of the greatest selling record of all time - Michael Jackson's Thriller. The album, titled Easy Star's Thrillah will be released August 28, 2012 (a day before the 53rd anniversary of Jackson's birth). Easy Star's Thrillah brings back several of the reggae stars from previous albums, such as vocalists Michael Rose (Black Uhuru), Steel Pulse, Luciano, Mojo Morgan (Morgan Heritage), alongside the diverse playing of guests Yossi Fine (David Bowie, Lou Reed, Stanley Jordan), Joe Tomino (Dub Trio/Matisyahu), Andy Farag (Umphrey's McGee), and horn tracks courtesy of Israel's highly-acclaimed funk/hip-hop band Hadag Nachash. The album will be preceded by the July 10th digital release of the Billie Jean EP, which includes two album tracks, along with non-album remixes and a dub version.

In selecting Thriller, Easy Star Records co-founder Lem Oppenheimer says, We've always tackled the greats - The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Radiohead - but while we wanted to take on another huge album, we also wanted to blaze new trails. In Thriller we found those new trails in a number of firsts for the series: the first album by an American artist, the first non-concept album, the first R&B/soul record, as well as the first release from the 80s.

For me, I was most excited for Thriller, says producer/arranger/guitarist Michael Goldwasser. I was always more of an R&B/soul and reggae kid growing up and I have an intense personal connection to Michael Jackson's music. As usual, the process initially involved Goldwasser spending a few months on arranging the songs. Writing the arrangements for this album was a cool challenge. I didn't have to try to make non-dance music into dance music as on our previous albums because the original Thriller is so danceable already, but I needed to find ways to make each song groove in a different way from the original version. I didn't want any of the arrangements to be obvious in that regard. In the end, Goldwasser's arrangements are some of the most interesting in his career.

Now that the hard work in the studio is done, the band is looking forward to bringing this music on the road, adding some dance/pop songs to their already varied sets. The band's live show, which was nominated for a UK Festy Award in 2009, already features tracks from the band's previous three tribute albums, along with original material. An extensive fall tour of the US and UK is already set up (US dates listed below), with more to come over the next year. As the original Thriller album comes up on its 30-year anniversary in November, what better way to celebrate this timeless album than to catch the Easy Star All-Stars perform their reggae-infused versions of this pop masterpiece.

    Tied To A Star

J Mascis' Tied to a Star is the follow up to his acclaimed Sub Pop debut
Several Shades of Why. The album, led by the songs "Every Morning"
and "Wide Awake," was recorded and produced by Mascis and mixed
by John Agnello at Bisquiteen in Amherst, MA.

It makes perfect sense that I was asked to write a bio for J Mascis.
Let's face it, he and I have a long history. It all started the first time I
saw him live. It was in New York City. I don't remember when or where,
but I think he was walking around. I was probably walking around, too.
The second time was also in New York, at a Mexican restaurant in the
East Village (the one that takes credit cards now, but didn't used to).
Years later I actually met him at the SXSW festival though a friend who
works at Sub Pop. I guess that meeting went well, because when that
friend from Sub Pop got married, she sat me at the same table as J.
Sounds unbelievable? I suggest you look at the picture below. Now keep
staring at that picture until... J's new acoustic
album Tied to a Star comes out on Sub Pop Records. It features
appearances by Ken Maiuri (Young@Heart Chorus), Pall Jenkins (Black
Heart Procession), Mark Mulcahy (Miracle Legion) and Chan Marshall
(Cat Power). Had I been in the area, I'm sure I would've been asked to
    play on it, too.

    Four Stars

The trio of Craig Fox, Patrick Keeler (The Raconteurs) and Little Jack Lawrence (The Dead Weather, The Raconteurs), heretofore known as The Greenhornes, have been churning out high quality rock 'n' roll for well over a decade. Formed in the late '90s in Cincinatti, Ohio, The Greenhornes have toured the world over and released 3 full length albums, an EP and a boat load of singles across a multitude of record labels. Their most recognizable tune, There Is An End, was featured throughout Jim Jarmuschs 2005 feature Broken Flowers.

After a five year hiatus, The Greenhornes are very excited to have Jack Whites Third Man Records release their brand new full length album, the aptly titled Four Stars. From the dark pop of lead single Saying Goodbye, the glam bubble of Song 13 to the moody psych of Cave Drawings, Four Stars is the band's strongest collection of songs to date. Equatorial Stars

Music performed and composed by Robert Fripp & Brian Eno

Brian Eno is usually credited with the claim that everyone who originally bought a Velvet Underground album subsequently formed a band. It's no less valid to suggest that many of those involved in electronic music might not have been but for "No Pussyfooting" and "Evening Star". Indeed few contemporary albums can claim as much lasting influence as "No Pussyfooting" by Fripp & Eno. It's safe to say that for the vast majority of buyers at the time of its initial release in 1973, this was their first exposure to the small world of electronic music. It's equally safe to say it wasn't their last. The equipment used was, by modern standards, primitive. The ideas expressed were, by any standards, enormous. Many went on to have careers based on the possibilities suggested by the album. Fripp & Eno - to their eternal credit - were too busy working as musicians to ever 'milk it' in that sense. One further full album, "Evening Star", was issued in 1975. There were occasional collaborations, but no further recordings under the Fripp & Eno banner until the emergence of "The Equatorial Stars" in late 2004 as a limited edition release via the artists' websites, followed by a full release in 2005 on CD.

However, it was never issued on vinyl, until now.

"The Equatorial Stars" consists of a series of seven soundscapes. The evident care taken in the construction & presentation of the sound world makes the totality of the work so convincing. The textures & atmospheres forming the heart of each track manage to subtly change & alter, while leaving ample space for Robert's guitar solos to emerge from the centre. The album was Fripp & Eno's opportunity to redefine an area of music they helped to launch into the mainstream in the first instance.

It is also, incidentally, Robert Fripp's personal favourite of his many collaborations with Brian Eno.

Seminal Slowcore Progenitor's Sub Pop Albums Reissued Individually as Deluxe 2LP + CD Editions!

Restored from the Original Masters & Complete w/ Additional Singles, Demos, Live Recordings and Peel Sessions!

From 1990-1994, New York City's Codeine were making somnambulant waves on a musical landscape reeling from Sub Pop's better known exports. 1991's Frigid Stars, 1992's Barely Real, and 1994's The White Birch received much critical praise upon release, but Codeine dissolved before any of that hype would carry Low, Bedhead, and the Red House Painters to international acclaim.

All three albums will be subjected to Numero's notoriously elaborate packaging and detailed liner notes, including essays by Sub Pop's Jonathan Poneman, Love Child's Alan Licht, and the Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne and Steven Drozd. The albums have been faithfully restored from the original masters, and are accompanied by a plethora of singles, demos, live recordings, and Peel sessions. Each album will be packaged as a double album with a CD of the same material.

Codeine's debut album Frigid Stars was originally released in 1990 on the German label Glitterhouse and then on Sub Pop the following year. The album is regarded as one of the pioneering album's of the slowcore movement and is highlighted by tracks like Pickup Song, Second Chance and New Year's co-written by Bitch Magnet's Sooyoung Park. The track Cave-In was the inspiration behind the name for the rock band Cave In who also covered the track. 2LP + CD edition features 10 bonus tracks including demos and acoustic versions.

In support of this great undertaking, Codeine's original line-up of Stephen Immerwahr, John Engle, and Chris Brokaw will be reuniting for a handful of dates in the US and Europe, including All Tomorrow's Parties in both London and Japan, and Primavera in Spain.

    Out Among The Stars

Throughout his five decades in music, Johnny Cash was unwavering in his dedication to his sound and style. Starting with Sun Records in 1955 through his days at Columbia and beyond, Cash always knew exactly what he wanted to do and exactly how it should sound. Everything he did, all the music he created was definitively Johnny Cash.

By 1980, the business of country music had changed to incorporate sounds that were incongruous with Cash's. His signature blend of folk and that boom-chicka-boom beat was out of vogue amongst the slick string-laden countrypolitan sounds that had become popular. This shift left all-time greats like Cash in the odd place of being revered, but not selling albums. In one effort to enhance his commercial appeal, Columbia Records paired Cash with producer Billy Sherrill who was having major success with this new country sound. While Sherrill selected many of the songs, it was Cash's trademark sound that dominated. The sessions were nothing short of magic. Cash employed an expanded band, featuring a young Marty Stuart on guitar and fiddle as well as long-time duet partners June Carter Cash and Waylon Jennings. Much of what was recorded was locked away in the vault lost and not to be heard again. Until now.

Discovered in 2012, Out Among The Stars is truly a lost, previously unreleased Johnny Cash album. These aren't alternate takes or different versions of songs that you've heard. These are brand new songs to the Cash canon. Completed in 2013 by Johnny's only son John Carter Cash, Out Among The Stars is a pivotal Johnny Cash album lost in time, and now ready to become a classic.

American music treasure Dwight Yoakam's special collaboration with leading bluegrass label Sugar Hill Records, Swimmin' Pools, Movie Stars is set for release this fall. For the making of this album, Yoakam assembled a band of bluegrass luminaries to reinterpret favorites from his catalogue of gems. The 11-track album features Yoakam compositions from his extensive catalog.

This project was produced by nine-time Grammy winner Gary Paczosa (Alison Krauss, Dolly Parton), Jon Randall (songwriter of Whiskey Lullaby") and Yoakam, recorded at both Southern Ground Studio (TN) and the legendary Capitol Records Studio B in Los Angeles and mixed by Chris Lord Alge. For the recording, the production team gathered together a world-class band of bluegrass's current greats including Grammy winner and nine-time international Bluegrass Music Association Guitar Player of the Year Bryan Sutton on guitar, Grammy winner Stuart Duncan on fiddle and banjo, 14-time Grammy winner Barry Bales on bass, Adam Steffey on mandolin (Alison Krauss), and Scott Vestal on banjo (Sam Bush). All Stars Soul International

Victor Olaiya is certainly one of the legendary foundation stones of modern Nigerian music, yet he has never received much acknowledgment or really had his albums released or promoted in any quantity outside of Nigeria. So this Vampisoul release is a step in the right direction for the 77 year old who was probably Nigerias leading star of the 50's and early 60's. Dr. Victor Abimbola Olaiya, the evil genius of Highlife, is still sockin it to them after 60 years on stage. If youre lucky you can catch him blowing that trumpet and singing his heart out at his own celebrated Stadium Hotel in Lagos, Nigeria.

This album from 1970 is from Olaiyas Highlife/Funk phase, but its worth taking a trawl through his back pages to see how he became the Evil Genius, before you roll back the rug and get down with the Highlife-Funk.

Julie Doiron & The Wooden Stars

Available For The First Time on Vinyl!

Julie Doiron and the Wooden Stars is Doiron's most critically acclaimed album, going so far as to win the 2000 Juno Award - the Canadian equivalent to the Grammy - for best independently released album of the year. Recorded & released in 1999 by Tree Records & Sappy Records (reissued by Jagjaguwar in 2002), the album finds Ottawa-based quartet the Wooden Stars playing Doiron's back-up band, helping her step out of the solitary, introspective robe she'd been wearing and venture into a more urgent and upbeat - albeit still fundamentally spartan - direction. Combining elements of rock and jazz a la Joni Mitchell's early '70s work, Julie and the Wooden Stars somehow translated the coldness of the Canadian winter into one of the warmest and most tender records to be produced in the Eastern province in years.

Available for the first time on vinyl, the Cocteau Twins retrospective Stars And Topsoil: A Collection 1982-1990 is the first ever collection of the best of their 4AD years. Following their ascent from alternative novices to universally acclaimed artists, Stars and Topsoil is a true testament to one of the most original bands to emerge in the last two decades. This chronological collection is a fitting reminder of why the Cocteau Twins are so important, musical visionaries who transcended convention yet achieved massive international success.

The Stars Are Indifferent To Astronomy

    With MP3 download

Singer/guitarist Matthew Caws Caws, bassist Daniel Lorca and drummer Ira Elliot are in love with the way rock music can transport you to a new and wonderful place in a beguiling rush of beats, chords, hooks and words, and they do it 10 times over here on their brilliant sixth album, The Stars Are Indifferent to Astronomy. The album has a somewhat more optimistic, more outward-looking tone than previous Nada Surf releases and springs from the notion of music as an alternative reality, songs as things you can keep by your side for inspiration and support.
