    The original master tapes for this title had not been used since 1980 previous to this reissue. Also, for this Analogue Productions reissue the decision was made to master and present this album as it was originally mixed to master tape. With very few exceptions all versions of this title to date, including the original, have had the channels incorrectly reversed. With this version, you'll hear this title as it was intended to be heard, without the channels reversed. And again, those reissues you've heard up until now - definitely still breathy, warm and rich - were made from something less than the master. Prepare to hear the veil removed.


    Astrud Gilberto says that her husband, Joao, informed Stan Getz that she could sing at the recording. Creed Taylor recalls that it took Getz's wife, Monica, to get both Astrud and Joao into the recording studio; Mrs. Getz had a sense that Astrud could make a hit. And Getz himself is on record saying that he insisted on Astrud's presence over the others' objections. So who's right? What does it matter? The Gilbertos, Getz and the legendary Antonio Carlos Jobim followed up the bossa nova success of Jazz Samba with this, the defining LP of the genre. With one of the greatest hit singles jazz has ever known - each one who hears it goes Ahhh!

    Partly because of its Brazilian collaborators and partly because of The Girl From Ipanema, Getz/Gilberto is nearly always acknowledged as the Stan Getz bossa nova LP. But Jazz Samba is just as crucial and groundbreaking; after all, it came first, and in fact was the first full-fledged bossa nova album ever recorded by American jazz musicians. And it was just as commercially successful, topping the LP charts and producing its own pop chart hit single in Desafinado. It was the true beginning of the bossa nova craze, and introduced several standards of the genre (including Ary Barroso's Bahia and Antonio Carlos Jobim's Desafinado and Samba de Uma Nota Só [aka One Note Samba]). But above all, Jazz Samba stands on its own artistic merit as a shimmering, graceful collection that's as subtly advanced -- in harmony and rhythm -- as it is beautiful. Getz and his co-billed partner, guitarist Charlie Byrd -- who was actually responsible for bringing bossa nova records to the U.S. and introducing Getz to the style -- have the perfect touch for bossa nova's delicate, airy texture. For his part, Byrd was one of the first American musicians to master bossa nova's difficult, bubbling syncopations, and his solos are light and lilting. Meanwhile, Getz's playing is superb, simultaneously offering a warm, full tone and a cool control of dynamics; plus, Byrd's gently off-kilter harmonies seem to stimulate Getz's melodic inventiveness even more than usual. But beyond technique, Getz intuitively understands the romanticism and the undercurrent of melancholy inherent in the music, and that's what really made Jazz Samba such a revelatory classic.     Getz/Gilberto is a 1964 jazz-bossa nova album by American saxophonist Stan Getz and Brazilian guitarist João Gilberto, featuring composer and pianist Antônio Carlos Jobim. Its release helped fuel the bossa nova craze in the United States and internationally, becoming the first Grammy Award-winning album from non-American artists. It brought together Stan Getz, who had already performed the genre on his LP Jazz Samba, João Gilberto (one of the creators of the style), and Jobim, a celebrated Brazilian composer (and also one of the main creators of the genre), who wrote most of the songs in the album. It became one of the best-selling jazz albums of all time, and turned Astrud Gilberto, who sang on the tracks The Girl from Ipanema and Corcovado, into an internationally celebrated musician.     The words bossa nova are often synonymous with the name Stan Getz. But North Americans might not have ever known the bright sound of bossa nova had it not been for Charlie Byrd. In 1961 Byrd returned from a tour of South America, where bossa nova music was thriving. The style was the invention of singer Joao Gilberto and songwriter Antonio Carlos Jobim - an adaptation of infectious Brazilian samba rhythms with the harmonic structures and cool surface of West Coast jazz. Byrd brought back records for Getz to hear, they planned a session, and the result was Jazz Samba - the first album of true bossa nova music by jazz artists and the one that broke the bossa nova wave in 1960s America.


    ...these are all truly classic Verve titles that you simply don't want to miss...most importantly, the sound of these reissues is nothing short of astounding.     Sonny Rollins' mid-sixties experiment with bossa nova was completely different than was Stan Getz "Jazz Samba". Rollins stayed true to his bop and avant garde roots, using bossa nova as a surgeon uses a scalpel, to dissect and deconstruct familiar melodies and turn them into something new. This hip reinterpretation of standards is Sonny's trademark, and in this album it's uncompromising. The whole album is interesting and highly original, but I will only comment on one cut, Rollins' deconstruction of a sentimental broadway ballad from Camelot. He takes the kitsch out of this tune and turns it into a fierce meditation on the origins of jazz, the mystery of rhythm, and the fundamental particles of melody. Rollins' version of If Ever I Would Leave You is nothing less than this: one of the greatest tenor solos in the history of jazz.

    At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.



    During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.



    A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.



    We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.



    We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.



    To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

The album boasts wonderful versions of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein's It Might as Well Be Spring, and the scintillating instrumental Summertime, from Porgy & Bess.


    The band features a young Gary Burton (vibraphone), Kenny Burrell (guitar), Gene Cherico (bass), and Joe Hunt (drums). There are a few personnel substitutions, with Helcio Milito (drums) and Chuck Israels (bass), respectively, filling in. Getz Au Go Go is highly recommended for all dimensions of jazz enthusiasts.

    Edition One of The Paris Concert by Bill Evans was recorded live in November 1979 at L'espace Cardin in Paris, France. Evans is assisted by bassist Marc Johnson and drummer Joe LaBarbera. This first edition of the two includes Gershwin's I Loves You Porgy, Rodgers & Hart's My Romance and Paul Simon's I Do It For Your Love.


    Bill Evans was an American jazz pianist and composer who mostly worked in a trio setting. He is widely considered to be one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time, and is considered by some to have been the most influential post-World War II jazz pianist. Evans's use of impressionist harmony, inventive interpretation of traditional jazz repertoire, block chords, and trademark rhythmically independent, singing melodic lines continue to influence jazz pianists today.


    Marc Johnson is an American jazz bass player, composer, and band leader. In 1978, Johnson joined legendary pianist Bill Evans in what would be Evans' last trio. Johnson toured and recorded with Evans until the death of the pianist in 1980. His many recording credits since then include discs with Joe Lovano, Michael Brecker, Stan Getz, Bob Brookmeyer, Gary Burton, John Abercrombie, Bill Frisell, Pat Metheny, Eliane Elias, Enrico Pieranunzi, Joey Baron, Philly Joe Jones, and many others.


    Joe LaBarbera is an American jazz drummer and composer. He is best known for his recordings and live performances with the trio of pianist Bill Evans in the final years of Evans' career. Prior to joining Evans he worked in the quartet of Chuck Mangione and Joe Farrell. After Evans' death in 1980, Joe joined singer Tony Bennett.

    More than seven years before Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd introduced the bossa nova of Antonio Carlos Jobim to American audiences, guitarist Laurindo Almeida and altoist Bud Shank (in a quartet with bassist Harry Babasin and drummer Roy Harte) recorded the intriguing music heard on this LP. The performances are very close to bossa nova in their combination of cool-toned jazz and Brazilian rhythms; in fact, these are arguably the first bossa nova recordings, long before even Jobim and Joao Gilberto initially recorded. Only four of the 14 tunes are not based on Brazilian folk songs, and many of the songs (particularly Carinoso) are quite memorable. This historically significant, very accessible, and highly recommended release is a gem.

    Stan Getz Featuring Joao Gilberto: The Best Of Two Worlds (Pure Pleasure)

    This 1976 album by the late saxophonist Stan Getz is a reunion of sorts with Joao Gilberto, the great Brazilian guitarist and singer, and the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim (or Tom Jobim), along with the stylish and nonintrusive arrangements of Oscar Carlos Neves. The most beautiful thing about this recording is that Jobim - whose song forms had reached such a degree of sophistication that he was untouchable - chose to write all of his lyrics in English (songwriter Gene Lees also wrote many in English). This is something that did not come naturally or effortlessly to Jobim, but sounds as if it did. Jobim's poetry on tracks such as Waters of March, accompanied by Getz's lushly romantic saxophones and Gilberto's crooning nylon-string guitar, are so sensuous they radiate heat and humidity.

    This 1957 date for Verve was the only official collaboration between Stan Getz and Oscar Peterson and it finds the two jazz greats in a quartet rounded out by guitarist Herb Ellis and bassist Ray Brown. The lack of drums here allows Getz's tenor to pace the foreground with a graceful precision while Peterson's deft fills and relaxed accompaniment creates the perfect atmosphere for creative interplay and fine sonic detail.


    The Norman Granz-produced 7-song set features a dynamic mix of standards, Getz originals like the heartening Tour's End and an infectious version of Ellis' Detour Ahead. Getz even regarded this historic meeting with the Oscar Peterson Trio as, One of the most enjoyable recordings I ever made. How refreshing it is to play with these pros.

    Around the year 1970, almost everything appeared to have been said about the style of music over the past two decades, which was a mix of samba and cool jazz. Adventurous musicians such as Luis Bonfa, Baden Powell, Charly Byrd, João and Astrud Gilberto, and the saxophonist Stan Getz lent fire and sentiment to the "new trend". First and foremost among them was Carlos Antonio Jobim, whose catchy tunes such as the ticking, shuffling song Desafinado and the genial One Note Samba were heard all over the globe.
    That the man from Ipanema still had a lot to say is proved by the present album, which presents Jobim's creativity at the height of his maturity. Right from the very first number, where Urbie Green on the trombone 'sings' Tereza My Love so purely in the top register, it is clear that the late bossa with its typical rhythm is structurally far more refined than the early hot dance numbers. The melodies are woven through, as it were, with shining gold and silver threads of rhythm, and clusters of sound are light and airy. However, here and there, the musicians let their hair down, such as in the Latin classic Brazil.



    With that magician of sound Deodato as arranger and conductor, and Rudy van Gelder as recording engineer, this LP is certainly a Bossa masterpiece. There's no more to be said!

    After hitting Paris in 1950, saxophonist Bobby Jaspar enthralled jazz fans and jazzmen alike with his smooth, elegant playing, with the lyricism of his tranquil phrases heavily influenced by Stan Getz in particular. So when Jaspar began regularly performing with a small ensemble at the Club St-Germain five years later, he adopted the same instrumentation as that of his idol's illustrious quintet, with Sacha Distel on guitar and RenÉ Urtreger on piano in the roles of Jimmy Raney and Al Haig, respectively.
    Contrary to what its title might suggest, Modern Jazz au Club St-Germain was actually recorded in the studio. It features compositions by Milt Jackson, Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis along with a handful of standards, in which the angular aridity of bebop gives way to the generous and yet sensitive idiom of cool jazz.



    Jaspar's premature death in 1963 robbed the jazz world of a promising talent; this record is among his best efforts as a leader. Bobby Jaspar is in top form here!!!

    Antonio Carlos Jobim, Brazilian composer of such popular songs at Desafinado and The Girl From Ipanema, derived his unmistakable songwriting style from a very personal sense of melody and harmony, the magnificent songwriting traditions of Brazil, the rhythm of the samba, and American jazz. The Composer of Desafinado, Plays was the LP Jobim created when the bossa nova wave hit the US. It showcases his own piano with string accompaniment (with results far different from the bossa nova efforts of Stan Getz, Joao Gilberto, et al). Remastered, Jobim's greatest songs are now in their best sound.


    This record offers instrumental interpretations of some of Jobim's most famous compositions from the salad days of the early '60s Bossa Nova craze. It's also one of the earliest examples of Jobim's long-standing and fruitful collaboration with arranger Claus Ogerman. Trademarks like Jobim's single-note piano style, the accompanying flute melodies and Ogerman's arranging techniques (unison string parts, the bass clarinet underpinnings in How Insensitive) would decorate Jobim's music for the next two decades. Similarly representative are the authentic Bossa Nova guitar and drums, subtle variations of which occur on each tune. Throughout the recording, Jobim's songs are powerful enough for the melodies to stand up even sans lyrics.

    This program of sultry, minor key music with a Brazilian tinge seems inspired by Ike Quebec, who was suffering from advanced cancer that would claim his life three months later. But here is big-toned, impassioned tenor is in tact. Quebec's take on the bossa nova craze that explored that year (1962) is more muscular than Stan Getz's and doesn't rely on the familiar Jobim and Gilberto songs of the day. He and Kenny Burrell solo on the sly, subtle rhythms of Wendell Marshall, Willie Bobo and Garvin Masseaux.
