    Sirens Of Song

A purveyor and survivor of Britpop (with band Squeeze), solo artist, author, and television presenter, Jools Holland is prominent as one of British music's most recognized and trustworthy.

A couple of years back, Holland's talent for composition was refreshed with 2012's The Golden Age Of Song, a star-studded effort. Holland must have had the itch to repeat that highly successful and pleasant experience, only this time around he's kept it between him and the ladies. What emerges is 14 tracks of originals and reworked gems starring some of the best female voices in the business.

What Holland nails here are his choices of leading ladies for each track, which offer so much in the way of delightfully surprising and sublime covers. Jamaican songstress Ruby Turner sasses up Ray Charles' Jumpin' In The Morning, our own pop princess Kylie Minogue puts her pout to The Clash's Should I Stay Or Should I Go, and Emeli SandÉ admirably takes on 1920s standard Love Me Or Leave Me. Among the standouts, though, are Louise Marshall's A Vow, a poem by one of Holland's favourite English poets, Wendy Cope; Joss Stone's soulful attack in Letting Me Down; and the playful ska in Monkey Man, brought to life by the late, great Amy Winehouse.

Holland's orchestra never falters, nor do the man's fingers on the ivories, and running throughout is a vibrant sense of celebration for not only these skilfull lasses but for the sheer act of making music with many different talents.

    Squeeze

Originally released in 1978, Squeeze is the self-titled first studio album released by British group Squeeze. The album title was simply Squeeze in the United Kingdom, but in the United States, Canada, Australia and other countries the album, like the band, was marketed under the name U.K. Squeeze to avoid confusion with similarly named American and Australian groups.

The LP was produced by John Cale, except for Take Me I'm Yours and Bang Bang (also the only singles released from the LP). Those songs were produced by the band.

    Larceny And Old Lace

The Coathangers' reckless energy from their half-serious roots is every bit as vibrant and rambunctious on their latest album, Larceny & Old Lace. But this time around were hearing a band thats honed their trade and incorporated more stylistic variations. Its also the bands first experience in a proper studio; the album was recorded with Ed Rawls at The Living Room in Atlanta, Georgia. The result is a record that feels like The Coathangers weve always known and loved, but sounds like a band taking their trade more seriously.

Where their past recordings were a mash-up of garage rocks rough and loose instrumentation and no-waves abrasive tonalities, Larceny & Old Lace showcases a broader song-writing range. Go Away taps into a 60s girl-group sound. Call to Nothing employs the paint-peeling guitars, dance beats, and slightly ominous melodies of the early post-punk pioneers. Well Alright is reminiscent of Rolling Stones bawdy R&B strut. Tabbacco Road is perhaps the biggest leap for the band, completely eschewing their rabble-rousing strategy in favor of penning a pensive and somber ballad.

With this broadened artistic horizon, refinement of technique, and Ed Rawls production allowing every instrument to shine without detracting from the bands natural grit, The Coathangers latest offering is easily their best record to date.

    Etched D-side

Produced by John Zorn, Mr. Bungle is the eponymous debut studio album album by American band Mr. Bungle, released in 1991. The album contains many genre shifts which are typical of the band, and helped increase the band's popularity, gaining them a reasonable following and fanbase.

Critics deem the album a 'dizzying, disconcerting, schizophrenic tour through just about any rock style the group can think of, hopping from genre to genre without any apparent rhyme or reason, and sometimes doing so several times in the same song.' Mike Patton's lyrics are even more bizarrely humorous than those he used in Faith No More, and they're also less self-censored, as titles like Squeeze Me Macaroni, My Ass Is on Fire, and The Girls of Porn indicate. This is a difficult, not very accessible record, and the band wouldn't have it any other way.

Incredibly, the original vinyl version of Mr. Bungle was pressed on a single LP, which - with an album duration of 75 minutes - had a rather dull dynamic sound as a result. For the Music On Vinyl version, we've added another LP side to give the music more space to breathe. To top it off, it boasts a unique etch on the D-side!

    Oh Man, Cover the Ground

    Limited Edition Of 1,000 Copies

Pressed On Custom Lake Blue Vinyl

Shana Cleveland is a rare artist who seems dismissive of time. Shes been performing with
a rotating batch of musicians tagged as The Sandcastles for years, and yet Oh Man,
Cover The Ground is their first proper album. It would be easy to chalk up the delay
behind the debut to a slacker lifestyle-Oh Man, Cover The Grounds laid-back vibe
certainly suggests an extremely casual approach to songcraft. But Cleveland is no slacker.
In the years since she first started playing out under her own name, shes helmed a
number of other music projects; most notably her revered Girls In The Garage-inspired
band La Luz. In her downtime, shes crafted a set of 37 trading cards dedicated to
obscure acoustic guitarists and a calendar of drawings depicting rock bands of
yesteryear. The glacial pace of Oh Man, Cover The Grounds development has little to do
with work ethic and everything to do with doing things in a way that feels right. "I don't
really think of it as a proper band," says Cleveland. "The line-up has been different for
almost every show depending on which arrangements I thought would be best for the
    atmosphere. Some shows I played alone; some with bass, clarinet, and backing vocals;
some with the addition of drums, cello and piano. We've played shows really selectively
throughout the last few years-just sticking to shows that I thought sounded really
interesting. Like, I'd rather play these songs for people in their bedrooms or in a field at
night than on a three band bill at a bar." In an industry fixated on striking while the iron
is hot, getting an artist in front of as many people in as short of a time as possible,
Clevelands insistence on atmosphere over arbitrary numbers is a bold move.

Oh Man, Cover The Grounds softly-stated melodies and breezy air operates on its own
sense of time. Though the songs still settle comfortably into three-minute parcels, their
gestation bucked at the convention of pop musics stringent time format. "I'm really into
meandering, fingerpicked open-tuned acoustic guitar, like John Fahey and Robbie
Basho," says Cleveland. "I started playing guitar in that style during a year right before I
moved to Seattle when I was lonely and bummed out in the San Fernando Valley and
found solace in spending long afternoons fingerpicking slow moving improvisations." This
casualness is evident in the music-you can hear it in the airy ambience of album opener
"Butter & Eggs", the gentle piano and strings accompaniment on the title track, the
particularly Fahey-esque explorations of "Itching Around" and "SPATM". But even the
timeline of the albums development seems to defy the ephemeral haste that permeates so
much contemporary music. The bulk of Oh Man, Cover The Ground was recorded in
Shanas basement. "I wanted it to sound casual and kind of loose like my favorite folk
albums, so we didn't practice much before recording and a few of the musicians were
playing the songs for the first time."

    The Lemon Squeeze

My sixth studio album, The Lemon Squeeze, will be released in 2014.

A few months ago I sat down with new friends and producers Gus van Go and Werner F (The Stills, Priestess, Hollerado) to talk about making an album. Gus and I were bonding over the classic Randy Newman album "Sail Away", when I admitted that I've always wanted to write and record an album on the piano, which is not my primary instrument. He challenged me to take some time away from my schedule of touring, animating and navel gazing, learn to play the damn piano and write some songs on it. I still don't really know how to play the piano that well (I'm practicing, promise), but somehow I managed to write some piano songs and I'm not afraid to say that I think they are the best songs I've ever written on the piano. It felt like writing for the first time and I fell in love with songwriting all over again. If you like catchy, upbeat music with off-centre lyrics delivered with a wink and nudge you will want to hear these songs.

The songs are fun, funny, sad, strange, direct, obtuse, intimate and grandiose. I poke at life and mortality with a stick in the swamp of human emotion. I imagine a wedding that is also a funeral. One song is an ode to my mother, whom I'm told actually carried me everywhere she went for 9 months without dropping me. In another song I frivolously use the worst of all the swear words to celebrate existence. I bet you didn't even think I thought that word! Motherfucking right I do.

    Sincerely,
    Jeremy Fisher

Suicide Squeeze Records Presents:Forever Singles (Awaiting Repress)

    Limited Edition Of 1,000 Copies

Pressed On Custom Light Green Vinyl

    Hand-numbered

Like many of the great independent record labels of the '90s, Suicide Squeeze started
off as a hobby. And like so many other hobby labels, Suicide Squeeze's rst ventures
were 7 singles. But whereas many upstarts plodded through a series of crudely
assembled debut records by short-lived and long-forgotten friends' bands, the Seattle
label hit the ground running with a stream of well-packaged singles by beloved
Northwest artists - 764-Hero, Pedro The Lion, Elliott Smith, and Modest Mouse, to
name a few. Not surprisingly, the quality of these early releases helped catapult the
    label into a full-time operation.

Whether a testament to the enduring allure of vinyl or the quality of the artists on the
roster, Suicide Squeeze continues to make 7s. And in this era of renewed interest in
vinyl, the label's limited-run releases sell out quickly. Lucky collectors continue to enjoy
the vinyl, and the dedicated fans always have the option to download the mp3s. But
what's the better plan for making these recordings endure for posterity? To add mp3s
to the ever-expanding annals of the internet, or to create a new slab of wax capturing
the best singles Suicide Squeeze has had to offer in recent years? Not content with
limiting the songs to the former, the Seattle indie label is going for the latter, culling
some of their nest tracks for the compilation album Suicide Squeeze Presents:
    Forever Singles.

The LP captures the rowdy garage rock of The Coathangers and Davilla 666, the
scraggly dirt-ridden guitars of JEFF the Brotherhood and Heavy Cream, the nostalgic
'60s girl-group melodies of Bleached and La Luz, the exuberant power pop of
Audacity, King Tuff, Nobunny, and Meat Market, the hazy noir soundtrack of Dirty
Beaches, the vitriolic basement-show noise-punk of Nu Sensae, the sinister post-punk
of Wax Idols, and the West Texas-bred Twin Reverb rock of The Numerators. Bundled
together onto one record, the collection perfectly captures the spirit of Suicide
Squeeze in the current decade: rambunctious youthful urgency tempered with a hat
tip to rock n' roll's gritty unsung heroes of the past.

In keeping with the limited-edition nature of the 7s, Forever Singles will be released
on 1000 hand-numbered colored vinyl. And while the compilation is a vital
documentation of the Northwest label's continuing commitment to bold and brash new
artists, it's also a solid reminder of rock music's humble beginning on dusty old '45s.

YAMANTAKA // SONIC TITAN release UZU, the highly anticipated followup to their critically acclaimed, self-titled debut, YT//ST. Out in 2013 on Suicide Squeeze Records, UZU exhibits a diverse range of influences, from bands like Sleep and Boris to art and cultural references like classical Japanese drama and the "nihilistic art-punk scene of pre-Giuliani New York City."

YAMANTAKA // SONIC TITAN explain the decision to start the album with the aggressive, guitar driven first single, "One", as a way to pay tribute to the extended group's indigenous upbringing and lead off with a traditional Iroquois song. The introductory chant is a social song calling people together and is traditionally performed by people of the Mohawk tribe.

How I Learned To Write Backwards

Available On Vinyl Again For The First Time In Over A Decade

The Aislers Set occupy an enviable place in the pop pantheon. Brimming with
drunken romanticism, sharp pop sensibilities, and timeless melodies, The Aislers
Set reveled in the history of great pop, spiking their classicist 60s-tinged tunes
with pure post-punk energy and originality of bands like the Fire Engines and
The June Brides. Every song is a meticulously constructed sound world, where the
arrangement and instrumentation sublimely and uncannily bring each tune to
    completeness.

Edgy and baroque, the band's final release How I Learned To Write Backwards
expertly wound together countless strands of pop history with personality and
atmosphere. Using the past as inspiration rather than blueprint, the echoes you
might hear of Phil Spector's Wall of Sound or Laura Nyro's soulful lyricism are
so well-integrated into The Aislers' sound that they're more akin to the spice in
the stew rather than the stock of the soup.

Although they stopped playing and recording together by 2004 due to life
commitments, their reputation has only grown; sporadic reunion shows and
mini-tours have been met with rapturous response. Alas, Suicide Squeeze is
proud to present the 2014 reissue of the seminal album "How I Learned To Write
Backwards" remastered and resequenced by John Greenham at Infrasonic
Sound in Los Angeles, and on vinyl LP again for the first time in over a decade.
The band will play a select set of shows this fall, and Suicide Squeeze and
Slumberland Records will be teaming up to co-release a new album of singles
and rarities to be released in early 2015.

    Planet of Ice

    Remastered By Bernie Grundman

Following the success of Highly Refined Pirates' forward-thinking guitar gymnastics and Menos El Oso's groundbreaking glitch rock, Seattle's premier pop revisionists Minus The Bear dug into some of rock music's most ostentatious years for inspiration for their 2007 album, Planet of Ice. The title alone conjures images of Yes's Relayer album art, and the influence of the elder statesmen's symphonic scope can be felt throughout Planet of Ice's lush and intricate arrangements. You can also hear the band channel the ominous instrumental interplay of Lamb-era Genesis on Dr. L'Ling, the deceptively savvy musicianship and pristine production of Steely Dan on White Mystery, and the tightrope walk between ethereal space and pre-metal riffage of Pink Floyd's Echoes on Lotus. Not that Minus The Bear completely abandoned their earlier style?elements of Menos El Oso's sample-driven technique can be heard on the lead single Knights. But the heart of the song ultimately belongs to the haunting Fripp-esque guitar lines spliced between verses. After being out of print on record since 2010, Suicide Squeeze is proud to reintroduce Planet of Ice's creative marriage of classic motifs and modern musical wizardry with a vinyl remaster courtesy of Bernie Grundman.

On Tail Swallower & Dove, These Arms Are Snakes move through
10-songs with the cracked grace of bolted lightning, rolling and
leveling, seeking a space to storm into. The band, comprised of Chris
Common (drums, percussion), Brian Cook (bass, guitar, keyboards),
Ryan Frederiksen (guitar, keyboards), Steve Snere (vocals, effects),
have brought their non-stop work ethic of touring and beyond-intense
performance to the studio with career defining result.

Not any one thing. TAAS play with their history, with their personalities
built deep into the music. You hear it in every innovation, behind each
note. A beautiful collision of what has always been with what is
completely unexpected. It's evident in the weight of the words,
structure of the songs, the linkage of current and construction:
concrete writing, coupled with a natural approach to recording, that
brought the band - helmed by Chris Common, to produce and engineer
    - back into the semi-secret Red Room, in Seattle, Washington, to track
    and mix.

The result is more an album - a coherent whole - than a cycle of
individual songs. The music circles around, from beginning to end,
looping seamlessly and devouring any sense of arrested motion. The
first single, "Red Line Season," is all guitar-hook-squirm, leading to an
anthem of a chorus. "Seven Curtains" explodes into being after thirtyseconds
of gorgeous, low volume riffing. It's here that the band's
strength in the studio really shows. From the textural depth of the
keyboards and guitar tones, to the vocal delivery, the attention to
detail is incredible. Each sound sets up huge spatial relationships,
creating a dynamic tug-o-war, and building up a groove that continues
throughout - marked by impossibly nimble drumming - blowing up the
    room with resonant vibration.

Tammar pulls off a pretty incredible trick with each and every one of its post-punk anthems, probably something of which the band doesn't take much note. They mine the classic sounds of paranoia, malaise and misanthropy (Joy Division, The Velvet Underground, The Fall and early '90s alt-rock), and fill it all with so much exuberance and joy of playing that each song becomes a triumph over anxiety and ennui. Visits finds each of the band's members stepping outside of themselves, but not in a snake-poison-ingesting, flopping-on-the-floor sense. It's something else, something full of wonder.

    Sundowning

Nu Sensae has taken big risks with even bigger payoffs on this release!

Refusing to repeat themselves, however, Lukic and Pitout are proving just how unpredictable they can be, they abandoned their status as a duo, a favorite angle of both the media and fans, and recruited Vancouver noise rock great Brody McKnight as a full-time member. Previously working with the now-legendary group Mutators, McKnight has added another dimension of heaviness to the band's already mind-melting sludge attack.

They've also embraced diversity in other ways, allowing more loud-quiet dynamics into their songwriting. From the creeping dirge of "Tea Swamp Park" to the vast expanse of "Say What You Are," the quiet sections offer brief moments of uneasy solace between the full out attack of songs like "100 Shades," "Tyjna" and "Eat Your Mind."

Elsewhere, subtle but defined melodies surface amidst the fuzz of tracks like "Burnt Masks" and "Dust." Don't be mistaken, though: Sundowning is designed to bludgeon with the raw aggression that can only come from the best elements of noise, punk and grunge.

After nine years of existence, Fullerton's Audacity has left the garage of their
humble 9th grade beginning, but the garage hasn't left the spirit of their
music. With two LPs, a slew of EPs, and no shortage of touring under their
belts, Audacity are hardly a wet-behind-the-ears rock band. Their
razor-sharp musicianship and high-energy performances were solid enough
to earn them the privilege of serving as the backing band for both King Tuff
and Todd Congelliere (Toys That Kill, Underground Railroad to Candyland).
And while you could hear the band pushing at the boundaries on their prior
releases-a nod to Descendents melodic hardcore here, a dash of
Replacements' bar-band irtations there-Audacity seems less interested in
showing a broad swath of inuences as they are in delivering the craftiest
hooks and sweatiest live show possible.

Audacity's latest full-length Butter Knife is still, at its core, a garage rock
record. The economic instrumentation, grit-tinged guitar jangle,
pogo-prompting tempos, and sing-along choruses can all be traced back to
the seminal Nuggets collections. But ultimately, Butter Knife doesn't sound so
much like an homage to The Sonics as it sounds like a young band striving to
make the most ebullient and jubilant noise possible. Album opener "Couldn't
Hold A Candle" is a perfect introduction to Audacity's battle plan-a
balanced blend of pop sensibility and ribald power. "Hole In The Sky"
showcases the band's gift for the on-the-dime changes, sophisticated
melodies, and clever instrumental interplay. "Red Wine" demonstrates a
Robert Pollard-like knack for turning an unexpected chord combination into a
remarkably punchy chorus. And album closer "Autumn" harkens back to the
balladry of power pop kings Big Star. All of which is to say, Audacity are
tighter and more clever than your average suburban band, and consequently
they're one of the strongest acts in the Southern Californian garage rock
scene surrounding Fullerton's DIY label Burger Records (Black Lips, Nobunny,
    Ty Segall, Thee Oh Sees).

    Suck My Shirt (Awaiting Repress)

Suck My Shirt is the fourth full-length for The Coathangers.

"It's a balance between overthinking and just going for it," guitarist
Crook Kid (Julia Kugel) says of their songwriting strategy. It's a
duality immediately apparent with the album opener "Follow Me."
It's a classic Coathangers tune with Stephanie Luke's raspy vocals
belted out over their signature ragged garage-rock. But the chorus
opens into one of the most accessible hooks in the band's canon,
just before segueing into the next verse with a squall of violent
dissonant guitar. From there the band launches into "Shut Up," a
title that harkens back to the brash sass of their rst record. The
song still has its spikey guitar riffs and shouted chorus, but here The
Coathangers sound less like a jubilant version of Huggy Bear and
more like the art-pop of late-era Minutemen.

Dedicated Coathangers fans will recognize the re-worked versions of "Merry
Go Round," "Smother," "Adderall," and "Derek's Song" from their
run of limited edition split 7s, and hearing them in the context of
the album shows that these tracks weren't merely isolated examples
of the band's more sophisticated side, but were actually
demonstrative of the group's increasing capacity for nestling solid
melodic hooks and rock heft into their repertoire. By the time the
band wraps up the album with the humble pop perfection of
"Drive," it's hard to believe this was the band that garnered their
reputation off of raucous bombasts like "Don't Touch My Shit."

    Another Language

Since 2004, This Will Destroy You has been forging some of the world's most brutal, dynamic, and precariously visceral instrumental rock. In addition to a vigorous tour schedule, their celebrated discography and critically renowned soundtrack work for feature films and documentaries have earned them a sizable and fervent international following. Another Language, TWDY's fourth full length LP, marks their euphonious return from a prolonged vacuous dark period that threatened to break both the band and the members themselves. Rather than be stifled by their experience TWDY were atomized and subsequently made anew, emerging with a revived energy and reinforced sense of solidarity. As a result, Another Language captures the band at its most potent, honed, and utterly powerful form yet, displaying an edified unity and graduated sense of song-writing, tonal complexity, and studio prowess.

    Darling... It's Too Late

    Peaches And Cream Colored Vinyl

"Oldies werent lo-fi," says Guantanamo Baywatch guitarist and vocalist Jason Powell, even though people have a hard time distinguishing the crackle and pop of worn-out vinyl or the low bandwidth of AM radio from
the actual production mastery of early rock n roll. With Darling Its Too Late, Guantanamo Baywatch sought to harness and manipulate the sparkling sounds from yesteryear, all while staying true to the tape hiss and
rough takes of analog recording. "We really wanted a mixtape compilation sound to the record," says Powell, and that approach can be heard in both the songwriting and the production. According to Powell, each individual song was approached with all the amps and the EQs on the recording console zeroed out. That meant that every song was recorded with a new template. The title track and lead single, "Too Late", perfectly captures this new aesthetic. With Burger Records soul singer Curtis Harding contributing
backing vocals and rounding out the classic Motown ballad vibe of the track, "Too Late" is an enormous departure from the trashy Mummies-esque ruckus of their earlier recordings. Of course, the band hasnt completely abandoned the rowdy surf rock of their previous releases-Powell put the finishing touches on the album back at his Jungle Muscles Studio in Portland to keep that rough-hewn feel intact. But even when he and his bandmates Chevelle Wiseman (bass) and Chris Scott (drums) tread on their familiar territory with songs like "Raunch Stomp" or their cover of Eddie & The Showmens "Mr. Rebel", theres a newfound clarity, punch, and swagger to their sound. Throughout the course of Darling Its Too Late the trio continues to fuck with various subgenres, from the dusty Western twang of "Corey Baums Theme" to the straight-outta-Sun Studios rocker "Do What You Want.
