    Amazing Grace

Amazing Grace is the fifth album by the British rock band Spiritualized, so named to indicate its considerable gospel influence. After working with free-jazz collective Spring Heel Jack on one of their albums and tour, frontman Jason Pierce was inspired to make a record with the same principles. His approach meant that the rest of Spiritualized was given the songs on the same day as they were recorded, meaning the record (including orchestral overdubs) was completed in 3 weeks. This is a huge difference compared to its predecessor, Let It Come Down, which took four years to record.

    Let It Come Down

"Let It Come Down" is the fourth album by Spiritualized, originally released in 2001. Jason Pierce spent four years writing, performing, recording and finally releasing the follow up to his 1997 breakthrough album "Ladies And Gentlemen, We Are Floating In Space". "Let It Come Down" features a full orchestra, gospel choir, and many back up musicians to fulfill Pierce's ambitions. This record is a step forward from Spiritualized's denser space rock of the first three records to a sweeping orchestral sound with large swaths of strings, brass and choir helping to fulfill the widescreen splendor of Pierce's vision. First domestic record release on 180 gram vinyl from Plain Recordings.

Bonnie & Mariee (Discontinued) (On Sale)

As great things often do, these sessions started with a simple conceptual challenge. In this case, it was the brainchild of Bonnie Prince Billy, after being asked by Spiritual Pajamas co-founder Britt Govea if he had interest in singing a song with Mariee Sioux at some point in the future. The idea has given birth to this wonderful collection of tunes.

Bonnie offers a stunning original and Mariee returns the favor with her own equally beautiful song. After these two were recorded, the fun and productivity simply could not be contained and additional cover songs were put to tape by analog recording master Jonathan Wilson to round out this legendary session.

These wonderful recordings feature a dream band of musicians: Paz (A Perfect Circle, Zwan and The Entrance Band) on bass, Nate Walcott (Bright Eyes) on keys, Jonathan Wilson on guitar and percussion, Farmer Dave Scher (Beachwood Sparks and Jenny Lewis) on slide and additional keys, Derek James (The Entrance Band) on drums and Dave Brennen (Dirt Blue Gene & Hope Sandoval and The Warm Inventions) and Emmett Kelly (The Cairo Gang) on additional guitars.

Flowering tongues, love skulls, whales trapped in ice, be thou not deceived and touch yourself a hundred times. These songs carve a place in your heart and tattoo your brain for ages to come.

This very limited edition double gatefold 7 vinyl release from Spiritual Pajamas is a must hear for fans of Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Mariee Sioux, and for all fans of finely recorded and performed music. Leave your shape behind, because when the avalanche slips off of your face the circle will close, God is not mockedBonnie & Mariee!

    Sweet Heart Sweet Light

For an artist as consistent as Spiritualized's Jason Spaceman, whose 7th studio album Sweet Heart Sweet Light will see its release on Fat Possum, it's easy to assume that there's a certain effortlessness to the creative process. In fact, the three years since the release of 2008's acclaimed Songs in A&E were some of the roughest imaginable for Jason.

After a near death from double pneumonia in 2005 it was a slow road to recovery, a process he touched upon on with great grace on the last album. His return to full health saw him release Songs in A&E and mount critically lauded performances of his 1997 game-changer Ladies And Gentlemen....We Are Floating In Space on both sides of the Atlantic.

However, shortly after recording Sweet Heart Sweet Light in far flung locales such as Los Angeles, Reykavik and Wales, Jason found himself weakened by a degenerative liver disease and was subjected to six months of chemo treatment, a procedure that left him virtually housebound while he mixed the album.

In a classic case of triumph over tribulation, the resulting album is Spiritualized at their most vibrant; full voiced and utterly sublime. In Jason Spaceman's orbit rock and roll is the salve and listeners will hear all of the epic grandiosity and brain worming melodies for which they're renowned, as well as the gorgeous gospel delium that makes hearing a new Spiritualized album an exhilarating and emotional experience.

"Hey Jane," an energetic 8+ minutes of rousing organ, glittering guitar fuzz and swirling choirs, is first the single and indication that new album Sweet Heart Sweet Light is another epic body of work from the anthemic master. It's been three years in the making for renowned perfectionist Jason Spaceman and the resulting music captured in this first single, showcases them at their most vibrant and sublime.

The album also features a first for Spiritualized: Jason is joined by his 11 year old daughter Poppy Spaceman on the starkly beautiful So Long You Pretty Thing for which she also has a writing credit for the opening couplet. Elsewhere on the album is I Am What I Am which was co-written by Jason and Mac Rebennack aka Dr. John.

    Songs In A&E

Who would have thought that Jason Pierce's Spiritualized would have had any life in them after the rather uninspiring Amazing Grace in 2003? In the intervening five years, Pierce nearly died from double pneumonia. Near death experiences by their very nature are life-changing events. The music on Songs in A&E were recorded in that aftermath, but most of the album was written two years before he got sick; with so much of it about near death and survival, it feels like life imitating art. From the first notes of Sweet Talk, it's obvious that a very different Spiritualized is up and about; an acoustic guitar, a sparse drum kit, the voice quartet, a few horns, and a minimal bassline fuel it. Pierce sweetly croons to a loved one in waltz time; his words are
simultaneously appeasing and accusatory. The gospel chorus isn't as overblown as it was on Amazing Grace or Let It Come Down. They are in a support role, offering Pierce's reedy voice a fullness and authority it wouldn't have otherwise. The arrangement is lilting but powerful. How strange, then, the sounds of a ventilator that usher in the next track Death Take Your Fiddle: I think I'll drink myself into a coma/And I'll take every way out I can find/But morphine, codeine, Whisky, they won't alter/The way I feel/Now death is not around...Death take your fiddle/And play a song for me. Minor-key acoustic
guitar and ghostly bass frame Pierce singing a mutant folk-blues that evokes Gary Davis' Death Don't Have No Mercy. The backing vocals float
wordlessly like death angels, hovering around the vocalist and giving the tune an otherworldly quality.

But this isn't a song about dying; it's a song about coming close and cheating it; it's eerie. The proof? The next two tracks: I Gotta Fire, and Soul on
Fire. The former is a taut, Gimme Shelter-esque rocker, the latter, a lush, uptempo love song. Sitting on Fire is a beautifully orchestrated love song:
it's an admission of weakness and codependency but celebrates both of them at the same time: Baby, I'm sitting on fire/but the flames put a hole in my
heart/when we're together we stand so tall/But a part of me falls to the floor/Sets me free /I do believe it'll burn up in me for the rest of my life. Strings,
vibes, marimbas, and drums crash in to the center of the mix carrying the protagonist into oblivion. Yeah, Yeah is a scorching rocker that feels like the
Bad Seeds meeting the old Spacemen 3. You Lie You Cheat, crashes in Velvets style with acoustic guitar and screeching feedback. The chorus sings
atop a flailing drum kit, distorted strings, and wailing electric guitar. The marimbas and strings that power Baby, I'm Just a Fool, sweetly underscore a
very dark pop song, complete with da-do-da-do-dat det-det-do's. It descends into beautifully textured chaos led by a loopy violin solo over seven
minutes. Songs in A&E is the most consistent recording Spiritualized has issued since 1997's Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space. It
contains the best elements of the band's signature sound, and paradoxically hedonistic yet utterly spiritual lyric themes. That said, newly focused energy,
willfully restrained arrangements, and taut compositions give the set a sheer emotional power that no Spiritualized recording has ever displayed before,
making it, quite possibly, their finest outing yet.

    Enemy/Lover

Dreamers of the Ghetto are a family band from Bloomington, IN, consisting of brothers Luke and Jonathan Jones, Luke's wife, Lauren and Marty Sprowles. After teasing blogs with enigmatic, homemade video clips for the past year, Indiana's most promising and perhaps most eccentric group finally unleashes their debut album, the stunning Enemy/Lover mixed by Kevin Ratterman (My Morning Jacket).

Dreamers of the Ghetto marries the sentiment of classic '80s film soundtracks to minimalist, romantic dream-rock, creating a unique environment that becomes almost instantly addicting. The triumphant, reach-for-the-stars attitude of veterans like U2 and Depeche Mode is paired with the gospel splendor of Spiritualized and ominous austerity of The xx, all carried by what Shaking Through calls the most amazing singer we've seen since Sharon Van Etten.

Dreamers of the Ghetto have mined a sound that is both timeless and nostalgic, and theyve done so with an earnest fearlessness and refreshing lack of irony. They are true, pure, and unbelievably powerful.

    Lazer Guided Melodies

The Jason Pierce-led space-rock group, Spiritualized, will take you on a voyage into the unknown with this aptly-titled 1992 debut. All the sounds on Lazer Guided Melodies are perfectly placed in space making it a masterpiece of economy and expression. It is authentically emotional as silence and simplicity are as crucial as the more complex instrumentation. An album to be heard with a set of headphones in a dark room and, above all, in its entirety. A pinnacle of the dream pop genre.

Fully Remastered And Finally Available Again On LP

Death's landmark 'Spiritual Healing' record is nothing short of genre-defining. Originally released in 1990, Spiritual Healing marked a new turn in the Death discography, one which ushered in cleaner production, a new level of boundary pushing musicianship and songwriting skills that were previously unimaginable from a metal band. Spiritual Healing sets the standard for riffs, insane time changes and of course mainman Chuck Schuldiner's masterful guitar solos.

Guardian Alien, led by the unparalleled drumming of Greg Fox, is an integral part of a new wave of New York avant-garde musicians. Taking inspiration from those that came before, such as Milford Graves (with whom Fox has studied), and the great minimalist composer Rhys Chatham, Guardian Alien rejects previously established forms while selectively contorting elements of many into a wholly unique and personal new order. Striking a unique balance between sounds produced acoustically and electronically, its latest work, Spiritual Emergency, shows the group harnessing instability and cosmic fluctuations, pushing its sound in multiple directions simultaneously to create a pivotal moment in the postmodern New York underground.

Sings Ballads, Blues & A Spiritual

"Being of Northern white origin and stressing Southern Negro songs as I do is, in a way, difficult to justify. I first came into contact with Negro traditional songs through a chance encounter with a recording of Stackolee made by Furry Lewis, a southern street singer about whom little seems to be known. Taking it to be a form of Jazz, in which I was primarily interested and involved, I made some further investigations and discovered a whole field of music which I had not previously known existed. At this point I don't think I had ever heard a white person sing a Negro song (with the exception of my grandmother who remembered some old cakewalk and ragtime songs from the 90's) and so, having only such singers as Furry Lewis, King Solomon Hill, and Leadbelly for models, when I tried to sing these songs I naturally imitated what I heard and, if I couldn't understand a word here or there, I just slurred right along with the singer. At that time, nobody listened to me anyway. Since then I have learned that the term folk music encompasses more than just Blue Tail Fly and On Top of Old Smokey and that there are quite a few white singers who sing the same material that I do with a very different approach from my own. Although I can appreciate the white approach to Negro folksongs and enjoy the work of many of its adherents, I still reserve the right to sing these songs in the style in which I am accustomed, partly because of habit, and partly, I confess, because I feel that my way is the right way. - Dave Van Ronk

World Spirituality Classics 1: The Ecstatic Music of Turiya Alice Coltrane

Alice Coltrane remains a singular figure on the fringe of American music but her appeal is growing. While Coltrane's music is gaining wider acceptance there is an entire era of her recorded output that remains obscure, almost as if by design.

Her four self-published, devotional albums of the eighties and nineties were recorded during a period in which she had withdrawn from secular life. They were manufactured and distributed in limited quantities amongst her spiritual community. Operating outside of the constraints of the commercial recording industry Coltrane was free of external pressures whether monetary or deadline. She recorded this music totally on her own terms. The resulting compositions synthesized her spiritual and musical outlook into a highly original work that is unique unto herself.

Available commercially for the first time. Remastered, bucket loads of notes, available in all formats but 8-track. A loving tribute to an amazing woman. 2xLP comes with two booklets of liner notes.

    Ice Cream Spiritual! (Awaiting Repress)

Double guitar bliss, a drummer drumming to the edge of his skills, and an unconventional front woman erupting with charisma. The CD version was praised in Spin, Rolling Stone, XLR8R, Pitchfork, NME, Filter, Mojo, and more. This limited edition LP is pressed on green vinyl.

The Baltimore based quartet Ponytail trade in gleefully frenetic, guitar-heavy art-pop that conjures the warped experimentations and fierce rhythmic drive of Krautrock originators like Neu! and Amon Du¿l, while drawing from the irreverent eclecticism and damaged pop of contemporary American acts like Deerhoof and Hella. Ponytail's sophomore release, ICE CREAM SPIRITUAL! is a wondrous blend of surprising pop hooks (the disco-inflected opening of "Sky Drool" is borrowed from an old Stevie Nicks tune), noise-wracked sound collages, and bracing guitar work all held together by the unearthly wails and ecstatic yelps of vocalist Molly Siegel.

...Bassist Charlie Haden and pianist Hank Jones perform a variety of spirituals, hymns and folk songs as duets. The traditional music (which includes such tunes as 'Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen,' 'Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,' 'Sometimes I Feel like a Motherless Child' and 'We Shall Overcome') are all performed respectfully and with reverence. These melodic yet subtly swinging interpretations hold one's interest throughout and reward repeated listenings.

The Play 33 1/3 LP Series is a 1st LP issue project of masterpiece albums which have never been released on LP. The albums are released by Universal Music Korea and the heavyweight LP vinyl is pressed by Pallas in Germany. Jazz, Folk Songs, Spirituals, & Blues

Recorded on in 1958 in Los Angeles, CA, Jazz, Folk Songs, Spirituals, & Blues is a rare album by the one-man-band and well-known folk musician Jesse Fuller. Although Fuller always played music on the side, becoming a master of the 12-string guitar (between working for the railroads, lumber companies, or the circus), he did not make his first recording until 1955, when he was already 50 years old. Frustrated by his inability to get a band together, Fuller devised a way to play all the instruments himself, constructing a one-man band system that allowed him to sing and accompany himself on the twelve-string guitar, harmonica, kazoo, cymbals & a homemade instrument he called the "fotdella" (played with the big toe of the right foot which hit pedals causing padded hammers to strike against the instrument's six strings). This brilliant and unique album in the blues arena includes Fuller's rendition of traditional blues numbers like "Take This Hammer" and "Linin' Track" as well as his own compositions like "Fingerbuster" and "99 Years".

    Sleep Forever (Awaiting Repress)

Last year Brandon Welchez and Chuck Rowell released their acclaimed debut album, Summer of Hate as Crocodiles. Straddling vast sonic terrains from the jagged guitar stabs of street-strutting lead single Neon Jesus, to throbbing kraut rock, expansive shoegaze and irresistibly danceable disco-punk jams, Summer Of Hate drew comparisons with The Velvet Underground and Primal Scream.

Significantly, it also caught the ear of James Ford, Simian Mobile Disco man and producer of the Arctic Monkeys, Klaxons and Florence and the Machine amongst others. Together, all three headed into the desert in early 2010 to create Summer Of Hate's psychedelic, hyptonic and anthemic follow-up. An album that would later be christened Sleep Forever.

Raw it may be, but Sleep Forever is still an unmistakingly more refined beast than its predecessor. Drums and organ whirls envelope you on tracks like Mirrors and Sleep Forever, which nod to Ladies and Gentelman era Spiritualized as much as they do Neu! and The Velvet Undergound.

    Calling Out

It wouldn't be entirely accurate to say that EZTV met while trying out for J. Spaceman's
latest US touring line-up of Spiritualized, but it's not far from the truth.
Songwriter and audio engineer Ezra Tenenbaum had been casually working
on solo home recordings on his Tascam 8-Track in the vein of Shoes, Emitt
Rhodes and Cleaners For Venus, and, in a desire to round out the songs, he
enlisted bassist Shane O'Connell and drummer Michael Stasiak (formerly of
Widowspeak). As it happened, the trio's first chance to play together was an
audition for the American touring version of Spiritualized (they didn't get the job).
But, the trio kept meeting and working, turning Ezra recording as a solo artist
into Ezra, Shane and Michael playing as a band; thus, EZTV was formed.

With a pool of over 30 demos to work with and Jarvis Taveniere of Woods
onboard to produce, the band headed to Thump Studios in Greenpoint,
Brooklyn, to record their debut LP for Captured Tracks. The result is Calling
Out, a cohesive 12-song statement in the long tradition of fully realized debuts,
stripped of artifice, but full of hooks and songwriting chops. Tracks like
first single "The Light," premiering today via The FADER, exhibit what you would
call the EZTV mantra: presenting songs with only the required embellishments.
They've got one foot firmly planted in classic American power-pop and college
rock while the other utilizes more left-of-the-dial sonic experimentation.
The result is a sound that's both familiar and new, but always about the songs.

In an era of independent music with a lot more emphasis placed on "story" and
meaningless twitter feuds, EZTV present a record that speaks for itself. It's an
LP made for an audience that doesn't want or need any kind of angle or controversy,
but desires songs that resonate and have a lasting appeal, something
    available here in spades.

    People Problems

Oh No Oh My writes songs that beat down your senses and fill up your boots with a feeling like you've just gotta, at the very least, move. The band jokingly describes their music as sexy indie which is what you might expect from an Austin-based foursome who cite Serge Gainsbourg's Histoire De Melody Nelson, Spiritualized's Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space and Nico's Chelsea Girls as influences on their second full-length album People Problems.

Multi-instrumentalists Daniel Hoxmeier, Joel Calvin, Greg Barkley and Tim Regan showcase a relaxed, effortless feel and pull no punches, anything goes strategy (Pitchfork) on 12 melodically driven tunes that range from winsome plaints to slightly off-kilter rockers, including seven tracks with hauntingly beautiful strings.

Oh No Oh My collaborated with sound engineers Jeff Byrd (Spoon, John Vanderslice) and Brad Bell (Spoon, Meat Puppets) in recording People Problems, the follow-up to 2008's Dmitrji Dmitrji EP. The album was recorded in the studio of Spoon drummer Jim Eno and at Hoxmeier's Sugarcube studio (named after the Yo La Tengo song).

    Pavilion

Over the last four years, Seattle synthesist Panabrite (aka Norm Chambers) has become one of America s most prolific and proficient creators of transcendent electronic music. Although under-appreciated in his own city, Chambers has been gaining fans and critical respect worldwide with a torrent of releases that evoke the prime work of ambient music s pioneers, the top tier of kosmische-musik makers, and the more mystical end of the new-age spectrum. He is a disciplined student of a wide range of cerebral genres, weaving elements from these styles into his own distinctive tapestries, balancing melodic playfulness with compositional rigor. As noted, Chambers is an ardent explorer of great, underground music and it s demonstrated on Pavilion as a love letter to some Italian albums from the classic 70s era of minimalism and prog, such as Lovisoni/Messina s Prati Bagnati Del Monte Analogo, Franco Battiato s Clic, Claudio Rocchi s Suoni Di Frontiera, and American-to-Rome transplant Alvin Curran s Canti E Vedute Del Giardino Magnetico. Chambers praises their freewheeling studio experimentalism crossed with the most elegant, stunning (non)ambient music. He strove for a similar feeling in Pavilion by playing 90 percent of everything by hand and opting for minimal use of sequencers. Pavilion marks what Chambers calls a slightly darker and tenser offering in the Panabrite pantheon. He says it s a bookend piece to my 2012 album The Baroque Atrium, in that it deals with certain concepts and ideas of mind-space; an account of a place and time and of the experience while there. The album begins with rain patter (Chambers does live in Seattle, after all) and keyboards that trigger thoughts of flower petals slowly opening and feelings of wonder and great expectation. This is Panabrite in his most traditional new-age mode, but gradually the mood darkens as he coaxes out a melody of grand despondency. Things turn even more foreboding on Arcade, with its warped vocal blending into pensive, mobile-like Rhodes piano, whose beautiful bell tones smear and drone à la Brian Eno s The Shutov Assembly. The effect is like being enveloped in swirling stardust in a church tower. Memory elaborates on Arcade, its contemplative ascending synth chords sounding like a monastic ringtone. With timbres akin to those on Spiritualized s Pure Phase Tones For DJs, Arcade exudes a swarming menace. Chambers cites Regent as his favorite track on Pavilion, describing it as the epic struggle, the lay of the land before or after a devastating occurrence, yet with a pervasive optimism pushing up from the din. Alternately urgent and melancholy, Regent decelerates into an agonizingly poignant cosmic theme in the vein of Ashra or Harald Grosskopf. Another highlight is Balsam, which combines looped acoustic guitar with a delicate xylophone motif, and synthetic birdsong. The song carries the same sense of beatific calm and graceful ascension as previous guitar-enhanced Panabrite titles like Janus and Suite (For Winnie And Roxy). Fans of Gastr Del Sol and Mountains should take note. Pavilion s last three pieces Pool, the title track, and Quartz reflect Chambers increasing compositional prowess, his ability to wring maximal emotion through minimalist gestures. This concluding trilogy leads you back to land with a ceremonial majesty and balletic poise. In a catalog teeming with adventurous, evocative music, Pavilion ranks up there with Panabrite s most sublime work.
