    Iluminomi / There's A War Going On

This 10 single comes in with two new songs by the band and plays for over 8 minutes. Recorded in the old East German TV & Radio building, this 2 track single features Will Carruthers (ex Spacemen 3, Spirtualized), Constantine Karlis (Dimmer), Friederike Bienert, Thibault Pesenti and Matt Hollywood.

Iluminomi is a Newcombe composition, sung in French. There's A War Going On was written and originally sung by Bobby Jameson in 1966 from the album Songs of Protest and Anti-Protest. The lyrics remain a constant reminder the times change but war doesn't.

    West

Wooden Shjips, as it is today, started in 2006. The band self released a 10 and 7 that year and started playing shows shortly thereafter. Prior to 2006, Wooden Shjips was an experiment in primitive and minimalist rock. After it imploded, Ripley Johnson, guitar and vocals, assembled the current lineup of Dusty Jermier on bass, Nash Whalen on organ, and Omar Ahsanuddin on drums. West marks the first time the band recorded in a proper studio, as well as the first time with an engineer (Phil Manley). All previous recordings, either self-released, for Holy Mountain, or Mexican Summer were done more piecemeal in the bands rehearsal studio. West was recorded and mixed in six days at Lucky Cat Studios in San Francisco. It was mastered by Sonic Boom at Blanker Unisinn, Brooklyn, with additional mastering by Heba Kadry at The Lodge in New York.

The over riding theme for the album (as indicated by the title) is the American West, and all of the mythology, romanticism, and idealism that it embodies. The band members grew up on the East Coast, so for a long time the history and literature of the West was an abstraction and a fascination for them. Part of the allure of the West, which is part of the myth, is the concept of Manifest Destiny, the vastness, and the possibilities for reinvention, which is not to say that is what each song is specifically about, but it was very much an undercurrent during the songwriting of the album. The artwork also touches on the same theme by using an iconic structure that is both a gateway in a literal and metaphorical sense.

It is easy to see why these would appeal to Wooden Shjips, as their music lends itself to exploration. It is both transformative and transporting, the sum being far greater than its parts. The steady driving rhythms are the elliptical motion machine driven by the often thick and distorted guitar lines, melodic and boundless. Where they may lead cannot be anticipated but following them is exhilarating. It is all about getting there, the destination, while the experience of getting there is an adventure. It is the guitar lines that guide both the listener and the band on the literal and metaphorical journey into the vastness. The ghostly vocals, obscured by dense layers of instruments surrounding them, are alluring with their airy mystery. This elusive quality further draws the listener in, while they attempt to grasp at their meaning. While indebted to both the psych music of the 60s and mid-70s, electric Neil Young, and even the induced travels of Spacemen 3, the Wooden Shjips music is modern and in every way their own. West is an epic journey to the edge and beyond.

    The Call Of The Cosmos

Lavishing in pop structures but drawing in myriad influences to the wondrous black hole, The Call Of The Cosmos features some shimmering spaciousness but also sleazy exotica-themes, not unlike a Lee Hazelwood production infected with Joe Meek s ghost. Roswell s own songwriting and voice recalls a solar-fried Bobby Gillespie, an artist he no doubt originally influenced with the Spacemen 3. Elsewhere, there s truly psychedelic excursions into outsiderdom which come off like the The Seeds mutating ever larger into lysergic-dipped monsters.

    Bardo Pond (Picture Disc)

Formed in 1989 in Philadelphia by the guitar-wielding Gibbons brothers, Bardo Pond's drug-inspired space rock-complete with droning guitars, heavy distortion, feedback, reverb, and white noise-soon made them cornerstones of the Psychedelphia scene (Aspera, Asteroid No. 4, Azusa Plane) and the same warped galaxy as bands like Hawkwind, Amon Duul II, Spacemen 3 and Mogwai.

Now two decades and many albums later, Bardo Pond are still drinking the water in Philly and this latest eponymous album, released in 2010, is just one of its happy consequences. The album eddies in a whirlpool of country psych, with Isobel Sollengberger's vocals braving the acid-tainted rapids. Picture disc in PVC sleeve with insert.

    In Limbo

Recorded during the summer of 2011 in a converted barn in rural Connecticut, In Limbo puts pop and tribal elements to the fore. The density and layers of the band's morphing keyboards, driving synths and jungle drums let their finely arranged vocals sit gloriously on top, each member's contribution shining through.

In Limbo was mixed and produced in collaboration with Sonic Boom (Spacemen 3, Spectrum).

    Sky Sounds

Magic Castles are a five-piece psychedelic rock band from Minneapolis MN. Their sound has been described as minimalistic, dream pop & neo-psychedelic rock. Drawing from a myriad of influences, combining the hazy, floaty atmospherics of bands like Spacemen 3 and Galaxie 500, with the organ-drenched psych of the mid/late 60's- particularly American west coast folk-rock, Magic Castles continue to create an altogether unique sound. Since their 2012 release on Anton Newcombe s imprint they have toured consistently, building a solid reputation for wall-of-sound live shows, stretching out their songs to new dimensions. The Magic Castles were the supporting act for BJM's east coast tour in 2012. Thrasher Magazine recently used their song Big Sur in a skate video alongside Kurt Vile. On April 20th 2014, BJM released a beautiful 12 split single with The Magic Castles for Record Store Day. Sky Sounds was recorded at The Old Blackberry Way Studio in Minneapolis, MN by Neil Weir. Produced by Neil Weir & Jason Edmonds, Sky Sounds sees the band reaching new heights. The album is dense with lush arrangements, jangling backward guitar sweeps, ever deepening melodic layers, symphonic Farfisa tones, and bright vocal harmonies. A host of guest musicians were included on select tracks, adding cello, viola, flute & trombone.

    Aufheben

Aufheben or aufhebung is a German word with several seemingly contradictory meanings, including to lift up, to abolish or to sublate. The term has also been defined as abolish, preserve and transcend. In philosophy, aufheben is used by Hegel to explain what happens when a thesis and antithesis interact. Aufheben also happens to be the name of the brand new album by the Brian Jonestown Massacre, recorded in Berlin in Anton Newcombe's studio and the infamous East German Radio Station Studio East.

Welcoming back original band member Matt Hollywood, the album also features Will Carruthers (Spacemen 3, Spritualized), Constatine Karlis (Dimmer) and Thibault Pesenti (Rockcandys) plus vocal performances by Eliza Karmasalo (in Finnish). Aufheben offers up the traditional Brian Jonestown Massacre sound mixed with eastern influences and brings it up to date with the benefit of all the additional weirdness that's been discovered in the past 40 years.

The Brian Jonestown Massacre has been somewhat of a musical commune for many respected musicians over the years, a band from the '90s that has bred other great bands ever since. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Warlocks, The Silver Rockets, The Black Angels, The Raveonettes and The Dilettantes are all part of the family tree. Indeed this is a band that has seen many incarnations since its inception in San Francisco in 1992. Two dozen band members later and numerous ups and downs, the one thing that has always remained constant for this psychedelic collective is mastermind frontman Anton Newcombe.

    Songs In A&E

Who would have thought that Jason Pierce's Spiritualized would have had any life in them after the rather uninspiring Amazing Grace in 2003? In the intervening five years, Pierce nearly died from double pneumonia. Near death experiences by their very nature are life-changing events. The music on Songs in A&E were recorded in that aftermath, but most of the album was written two years before he got sick; with so much of it about near death and survival, it feels like life imitating art. From the first notes of Sweet Talk, it's obvious that a very different Spiritualized is up and about; an acoustic guitar, a sparse drum kit, the voice quartet, a few horns, and a minimal bassline fuel it. Pierce sweetly croons to a loved one in waltz time; his words are
simultaneously appeasing and accusatory. The gospel chorus isn't as overblown as it was on Amazing Grace or Let It Come Down. They are in a support role, offering Pierce's reedy voice a fullness and authority it wouldn't have otherwise. The arrangement is lilting but powerful. How strange, then, the sounds of a ventilator that usher in the next track Death Take Your Fiddle: I think I'll drink myself into a coma/And I'll take every way out I can find/But morphine, codeine, Whisky, they won't alter/The way I feel/Now death is not around...Death take your fiddle/And play a song for me. Minor-key acoustic
guitar and ghostly bass frame Pierce singing a mutant folk-blues that evokes Gary Davis' Death Don't Have No Mercy. The backing vocals float
wordlessly like death angels, hovering around the vocalist and giving the tune an otherworldly quality.

But this isn't a song about dying; it's a song about coming close and cheating it; it's eerie. The proof? The next two tracks: I Gotta Fire, and Soul on
Fire. The former is a taut, Gimme Shelter-esque rocker, the latter, a lush, uptempo love song. Sitting on Fire is a beautifully orchestrated love song:
it's an admission of weakness and codependency but celebrates both of them at the same time: Baby, I'm sitting on fire/but the flames put a hole in my
heart/when we're together we stand so tall/But a part of me falls to the floor/Sets me free /I do believe it'll burn up in me for the rest of my life. Strings,
vibes, marimbas, and drums crash in to the center of the mix carrying the protagonist into oblivion. Yeah, Yeah is a scorching rocker that feels like the
Bad Seeds meeting the old Spacemen 3. You Lie You Cheat, crashes in Velvets style with acoustic guitar and screeching feedback. The chorus sings
atop a flailing drum kit, distorted strings, and wailing electric guitar. The marimbas and strings that power Baby, I'm Just a Fool, sweetly underscore a
very dark pop song, complete with da-do-da-do-dat det-det-do's. It descends into beautifully textured chaos led by a loopy violin solo over seven
minutes. Songs in A&E is the most consistent recording Spiritualized has issued since 1997's Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space. It
contains the best elements of the band's signature sound, and paradoxically hedonistic yet utterly spiritual lyric themes. That said, newly focused energy,
willfully restrained arrangements, and taut compositions give the set a sheer emotional power that no Spiritualized recording has ever displayed before,
making it, quite possibly, their finest outing yet.

Limited to only 2,500 copies worldwide.

Andrew Weatherall, long time producer and remixer who has worked with the likes of Primal Scream, New Order, My Bloody Valentine and Bjork, remixed Crossing. Pete Kember, also known as Sonic Boom of Spacemen 3/Spectrum fame contributed Wiking Stew (aka Red Krayola-ing). When Pete was called in to help master the record he was inspired by the album and made this mash up from West on his own. The 13th Floor Elevators 1967 Masterpiece On 180 Gram Gold Vinyl For The First Time Ever

Mastered on 180-gram audiophile-quality vinyl from masters mixed to stereo from the original 1967 Andrus Studios session multitracks by IA producer Ray Rush at Autumn Sound Studios during November 1976.

The only 13th Floor Elevators LP to make the Billboard chart captures the group at their absolute peak. Released in November 1967, a year after their debut LP 'Psychedelic Sounds', the band, critics and fans alike consider 'Easter Everywhere' to be the Elevator's finest work.

Produced by Lelan Rogers, the music is delivered with an informed power and intensity of knowing. Even the quieter tracks, 'Dust' and 'Had To Tell You' display a restrained beauty and purity of vision which perfectly counterbalance the intensity of 'Earthquake' and 'Slip Inside This House'.

Genre-defining, pioneering, unique and utterly timeless, The 13th Floor Elevators continue to influence and inspire new generations of musicians.

Secret Machines, the three piece "Space Rock" alternative band from Dallas consists of Brandon Curtis on vocals, bass and keyboards, Benjamin Curtis on guitar and backing vocals, and Josh Garza on drums.

Best described as progressive rock with some Krautrock mixed in, the band's first full length release, Now Here is Nowhere, was recorded at Stratosphere Sound in NY and released May 18, 2004 on Reprise Records. All Music Guide gave the album 4 out of 5 stars. Their second album, Ten Silver Drops, like their first, did not make an impact commercially but garnered many favorable reviews. Following the release, the band was interviewed by David Bowie on radio; purported to be a big fan.

Benjamin left the band in March of 2007. The Secret Machines followed with two non-Reprise albums that failed to break and Benjamin tragically passed away from lymphoma at the age of 35. They have toured with the Foo Fighters, Spiritualized, Oasis, Kings of Leon, Interpol and many others. They have been inactive since 2010. Anyone interested in Pink Floyd, NEU, Ride, Spacemen 3, Mercury Rev, the Flaming Lips, U2, Super Furry Animals, Sparklehorse & Broken Social Scene should have this album in their collection.

"The Secret Machines create songs that are just as spacey and concept-heavy, if not quite as quirky, as those on Yoshimi and the Sophtware Slump." -Pitchfork

"A spiraling blend of infectious psychedelic pop that froths and fuzzes for a noisy hour." -Q Magazine

"The Machines have grasped that the zero tolerance of punk for the values of Yes did as much harm as good" -NME

"It's like John Bonham playing with CAN, or Pink Floyd-meet-Spirtualized with a barely repressed pop consciousness" -Uncut

"Beautifully spacey and searingly brash all at once." -Billboard

The Red Krayola were a band at the very cutting edge of psychedelic music and have been
described as the 'notorious self-styled bastard sons of the hippie dream'. They broke
boundaries, unleashed a free-form anti rock noise on un suspecting audiences, took to the
stage with an experimental ensemble called the Familiar Ugly and all this in conservative
    1967 Houston.

This their first, and finest album from 1967, recorded for Independent Artists Records, in which leader Mayo Thompson leads them amongst the freak outs in a selection of enduring songs such as the much copied 'Hurricane Fighter Plane' and 'War Sucks'.

This release is a deluxe gatefold two record edition featuring both the mono and stereo
    versions.

It was lovingly re-mastered from the original tapes by devoted fan, Sonic Boom of
Spacemen Three who considers the band the greatest and yet least recognised of the
    great 60s experimenters and visionaries.
