    Rather Ripped

Rather Ripped was recorded through the waning hours of 2005 into the dawn sunshine of 2006 at Sear Sound Studios in NYC's fading theater district. Mixed at Sear Sound and at Hoboken, NJ's Water Music by the golden ear of John Agnello, the album exhibits SY in positive vibration mode. Rather Ripped features twelve songs of forward motion and harmonic/melodic surprise with vocals shared by Thurston Moore, Kim Gordon and Lee Ranaldo with Steve Shelley gluing the rhythms to the floorboards.

    Goo

Goo is the sixth studio album by American alternative rock band Sonic Youth. The album was Sonic Youth's debut release on a major record label, after the band signed to Geffen Records following the release of Daydream Nation (1988).

Goo was recorded over a short period in early 1990 at Sorcerer Sound Recording Studios and Greene St. Recording with Daydream Nation producer Nick Sansano and additional producer Ron Saint Germain. The album's sound diverged considerably from their earlier material and is often considered their most accessible album, with elements of experimental rock, garage punk, alternative rock and hard rock.

    Trust

    180 Gram Vinyl

The album cover to Trust speaks volumes: Elvis Costello, bathed in shadows, his eyes nervously peering out from behind his sunglasses, his face conveying a combination of edgy noir purpose and guilt-ridden anxiety. Indeed, the tension-rich songs within largely convey the opposite meanings of the record's title, with the British icon musing on what lies beyond arrogant youth and immediate success with a jaundiced, scarred perspective informed by his country's political climate and his own experiences.

Whether the full, rounded tones of Bruce Thomas' bass or complete extension and decay of Steve Nieve's organ, every instrumental accent is delivered with lifelike detail and superb balance. Melodicas, drums, pianos, and guitars similarly come across faithfully and richly, the blend freed of constricting sonic veils and dynamic compression. Heard anew on this pressing, Trust emerges as one of the most satisfyingly complex and expertly played albums of its era. Costello's singing, too, reveals intricate tonal shadings and implied meanings, with slower tracks such as the hypnotic "Watch Your Step" and Tin Pan Alley-inspired solo tour de force "Shot With His Own Gun" ravishing with enhanced emotional investment.

As is often the case with great (and sophisticated) albums, Trust-which retains a five-star review from the most recent Rolling Stone Album Guide-didn't spawn any Top 40 hits at the time of its release. Yet age has been more than kind to the effort Costello said aimed to cross the rhythms of Get Happy!! with the melodies of Armed Forces, and which more than achieves the exacting goal. Admittedly made in a haze of booze and pills, the 1981 affair plumbs issues of disillusionment, romance, and sin with barbed wit and unvarnished honesty.

Country, soul, pop, rockabilly, two-step, punk-shot-through rock, jazz-Costello and the Attractions explore and master it all on Trust, all the while performing with an unencumbered directness and on-point coherence. No better example of the singer's simultaneous stylistic reach and virtuosity exists. Experience it like never before on this phenomenal-sounding pressing.

    Sonic Nurse

Sonic Youth has trimmed away its more direct hooks, while also curbing its artier indulgences. That isn't to say that melody or noise is absent--especially when it's Kim Gordon's turn to rant on cuts such as Mariah Carey and the Arthur Doyle Hand Cream--but that these elements are carefully balanced and defer to an overall sound that's richer than ever now that newest member Jim O'Rourke has fully integrated himself into the band's gestalt.

    A Thousand Leaves

Thanks in part to a preceding series of self-released instrumental EPs, 1998's A Thousand Leaves was among Sonic Youth's most highly anticipated releases. Public interest in underground electronica seemed to have rekindled the band's interest in making experimental-minded rock albums. The guitar interplay on tracks like Wildflower Soul, Hits of Sunshine (for Allen Ginsberg) and Karen Koltrane demonstrate why, 18 years after they formed in NYC, this band was still regarded as the most forward-looking unit in rock.

    Sonic Youth

Sonic Youth's eponymous five song debut record was recorded in late 1981 at Radio City Music Hall in NYC and originally released on composer Glenn Branca's Neutral label. The album is loosely based on compositions the newly formed group had performed at that year's week-long Noisefest event and remains the only recorded document of an early line-up featuring actor Richard Edson on drums. Though Sonic Youth are largely known for their use of radical alternate tunings, they claim this record was written entirely in standard tuning.

Between The Times And The Tides

Between The Times And The Tides is the first proper, song-oriented studio album from Sonic Youth guitarist Lee Ranaldo. Recorded with longstanding Sonic Youth producer John Agnello, the album is a shimmering and melodic tapestry of rock sounds.

Ranaldos trademark alternate-tuning guitar work is at the forefront here, but it is amplified by brilliant leadwork from Wilcos Nels Cline on every track. The all-star lineup also includes Sonic Youths Steve Shelley on drums, Alan Licht on guitar, and John Medeski on keyboards. There are also cameos from original Sonic Youth drummer Bob Bert and producer and instrumentalist Jim ORourke.

Between The Times and The Tides is equal parts smart, confident and loose in a manner that recalls some of Matador's favorite rock n' roll projects yet sounds like a fantastic new band that was apparently being assembled right under our noses. With lyrics plumbing Ranaldos childhood and adolescence, its a fascinatingly approachable song collection from one of rocks greatest guitarists. Includes MP3 coupon.

Experimental Jet Set, Trash And No Star

Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star is the eighth studio album by the American experimental rock band Sonic Youth, originally released in 1994 by DGC Records. It was produced by Butch Vig and recorded at Sear Sound studio in New York City, the same studio where the band's 1987 album Sister was recorded. Unlike its predecessor Dirty, Experimental Jet Set features a more low-key approach and references the band's earlier work on the independent record label SST Records. The album contains quieter and more relaxed songs that deal with personal and political topics.

    Dirty

Dirty finds Sonic Youth revisiting the territory the band mapped out on Sister -- merging the propulsive structures of rock (both punk and otherwise) with the gorgeous chaos of their approach to the electric guitar -- and it shows how much better they'd gotten at it in the past five years, from the curiously beautiful Wish Fulfillment and Theresa's Sound World to the brutal Drunken Butterfly and Purr. Dirty was also Sonic Youth's most overtly political album, railing against the abuses of the Reagan/Bush era on Youth Against Fascism, Swimsuit Issue, and Chapel Hill, a surprising move from a band so often in love with cryptic irony.

    Murray Street

Named after the New York street where their studio is situated--and where a plane engine landed on September 11, 2001--Murray Street is potent, accessible, daring, and often obliteratingly lovely. For a start, the first three songs (The Empty Page, Disconnection Notice, and Rain On Tin) easily rank with the highlights of SY's previous 15 albums. Obliquely melancholic, tuneful but unorthodox, all are enriched by great cascades of intricate three-guitar noise.

    Coming Apart

Body/Head are an electric guitar duo comprised of Kim Gordon (CKM, Sonic Youth, Free Kitten, etc.) and Bill Nace (X.O.4, Vampire Belt, Ceylon Mange, etc.) The pair began working together in various loose formats a few years ago, but the Body/Head concept evolved more specifically in early 2012.

Initially their approach was almost entirely instrumental - lattices of interwoven feedback rainbows, with bits recalling everyone from Heldon to Keiji Haino. They usually performed against a backdrop of slow-motion film projection, creating a dream narrative of undeniable power and visionary reach. Kim's voice began creeping into the mix soon after, and the vocals now have become an intrinsic part of their musical architecture. They have even started writing and playing "songs" now, compositionally distinct from their purely aleatory origins, but still featuring lots of built-in improvisational space.

Body/Head have also worked with guest artists since their inception. An early session with Michael Morley of The Dead C resulted in the Body/Gate/Head LP 'Glare Luring Yo', and live collaborations with Ikue Mori. Ikue has been focusing on electronics as her primary instrument in the decades since the end of her groundbreaking trio DNA, but Kim was able to talk her into trying drums again, and the results have been astounding. Ikue's percussion grounds the spirals of guitar and vocals with its strong central pulse, allowing everybody to achieve greater heights of musical/visual disorientation.

Body/Head have thus far recorded a single for Dennis Tyfuss' Ultra Eczama Editions, a tour EP for Nace's own Open Mouth Productions, and released their collaboration with Morley through Feeding Tube Records.

'Coming Apart' is released as a double LP by Matador Records.

    Goodbye 20th Century

The fourth release on the SYR label was not designated to new material or studio improvisations, but instead a set of Sonic Youth's interpretations of various works by other composers. A truly ambitious project, it's one of their most diverse releases yet, featuring a selection of guest performers and some extremely interesting recordings, from the seemingly random yet very calculated half-hour John Cage piece Four6 to Coco's shrill delivery of Yoko Ono's Voice Piece For Soprano, from the torturous yet compelling Pendulum Music to the perplexing yet amusing 88-key destruction of Piano Piece #13. Goodbye 20th Century finds Sonic Youth bringing the listener down musical paths they might not otherwise have ever gone.

    Sister

"Let's get something straight. There is no album in the entire corpus of indie rock-not Loveless, not Surfer Rosa, not Psychocandy-that reaches the heights of invention, joy, and magic of Sonic Youth's sublime fifth album.... The haunted reveries of Sister remain with you for years, even if you only hear them once . Sister is the sonic manifestation of refracted light. It's a record that changes you."

    -Stereogum

One of Sonic Youth's most beloved albums, 1987's Sister incorporated the dissonance of their earlier releases into more traditional song structures. It's an innovative and thrilling work assuredly delivered by a band at the peak of their powers.

Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes starts right where Young Liars left off and propels TV On The Radio into uncharted sonic territory. Herein you will find more undeniably catchy songs with incredible production, arrangements and champion crooning, including some stunning a cappella performances. Featured are nine songs about discordant living, misrepresentation, life, afterlife and love. They're pop songs, they're rock songs, they're art songs, they're whatever you want them to be.

TV On The Radio's popularity and artistic potential has grown consistently from their 2003 EP Young Liars, to this their follow up full length, Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes and culminated thus far on their latest release Return to Cookie Mountain which was considered by most to be the 2006 album of the year.

    Washing Machine

After the regressive, low-key Experimental Jet Set, Trash & No Star, Sonic Youth appeared to be floundering somewhat, but Washing Machine erased any notion that the band had run out of things to say. Easily their most adventurous, challenging, and best record since Daydream Nation, the album finds Sonic Youth returning to the fearless exploration, but the group has found a way to work that into tighter song structures. Not only are the songs more immediate than most of the material on their earlier records, the sound here is warm and open, making Washing Machine their most mature and welcoming record to date. It's not a commercial record, nor is it a pop record, but Washing Machine encompasses everything that made Sonic Youth innovators, and shows that they can continue to grow, finding new paths inside their signature sound.

    Comfort Of Strangers

Few vocalists equal the expressive subtlety of Beth Orton, whose fourth album is both her most musically spare and artistically complex to date. Not only does the production and backing by Jim O'Rourke (known for his work with Sonic Youth and Wilco) capture Orton's vocal style at its most unstudied and unvarnished, the lack of embellishment focuses all the more attention on her songwriting. From the jazzy phrasing on the deceptively jaunty Worms through the haunting Feral and the amazing grace of the closing, hymnlike Pieces of Sky, Orton's songs give voice to the sort of knotty, prickly emotions that are as hard to define as they are deeply felt. Most of the musical dynamic features piano or guitar over an elemental, insistent rhythm section, making the coloring of an occasional string section (Conceived), harmonica (Absinthe), or accordion (Safe in Your Arms) all the more striking. As an indication of the emotional range of this musical minimalism, the title cut is soothing enough to please fans of Norah Jones, while Heartlandstruckstop is as edgy as Patti Smith. -Don McLeese

    NYC Ghosts & Flowers

NYC Ghosts & Flowers is the 11th studio album by American noise rock/alternative rock band Sonic Youth. It was originally released on May 16, 2000 by record label DGC. The album was very experimental and can be considered as a reaction to the theft of their instruments in July 1999, in which many irreplaceable guitars and effects pedals were stolen. This is also the first album since Bad Moon Rising in which Sonic Youth used John Cage-like prepared guitar, for example using a bicycle horn between the strings on Lightnin', a lime between the strings and the first pickup and a file inserted over the neck pickup on Small Flowers Crack Concrete and a drum stick between the strings in Free City Rhymes.

    Jane From Occupied Europe

Noisy and experimental, Britain's Swell Maps experienced little commercial success during the course of their chaotic career, but in hindsight they stand as one of the pivotal acts of the new wave: not only was the group an acknowledged inspiration to the likes of Sonic Youth and Pavement, but their alumni - most notably brothers Nikki Sudden and Epic Soundtracks - continued on as key players in the underground music community.

    Demolished Thoughts

Demolished Thoughts, released via Matador, is the 4th solo album from Sonic Youths Thurston Moore and his first to be produced by Beck Hansen. Recorded in Los Angeles and Northampton, MA this past autumn and winter, with a title culled from The Faiths Its Time, Demolished Thoughts is an equally beautiful and brooding work.

While there are more than a few tonal similarities to some of your favorite Moore compositions from years past, the execution this time around is nothing short of staggering. Demolished Thoughts burnishes Thurstons rep as a classic songwriter in ways never anticipated.

In addition to Moores guitars and vocals, other players include violinist Samara Lubelski (Metal Mountains, Hall Of Fame, Tower Recordings, Metabolismus), harpist Mary Lattimore (Kurt Viles latest), bassist Bram Inscore, drummer Joey Waronker and Beck.

    Interference

Forming out of the musical insurgence that was the NoiseFest at White Columns Gallery in 1981; Interference coalesced around three key figures of New York's downtown scene: Anne DeMaranis, David Linton and Michael Brown. DeMaranis had just parted ways with an early incarnation of Sonic Youth and co-curated the NoiseFest with Thurston Moore. Linton had headed to NYC a few years earlier with then school/band mate Lee Renaldo, eventually hooking up with Rhys Chatham for a three year stretch.
