The world has finally caught up with Slowdive. A band whose reach goes far beyond just influencing music is back, with their first new album in 22 years.
The album is called Slowdive - self-titled in an echo of their debut EP from 1990 - and is remarkably direct.
We were always ambitious, says frontman Neil Halstead. Not in terms of trying to sell records, but in terms of making interesting records. Maybe, if you try and make interesting records, they're still interesting in a few years' time.
Now, in 2017, the record is ready and first single from which, Star Roving, shot to the top of the Billboard Trending 140 Chart.
There's a different energy about it, says drummer Simon Scott. It took ages to get back together and write songs and for it to click in the studio, but this album doesn't feel like a bolt-on - it's got an energy that's as vibrant as Souvlaki and Just for a Day. The English shoegaze band Slowdive formed in 1989 and primarily consisted of Nick Chaplin (bass), Rachel Goswell (vocals, guitar), Christian Savill (guitar) and the band's primary songwriter Neil Halstead (vocals, guitar).
'Souvlaki' is Slowdive's second studio album, originally released in 1993. The album contains synthesizer contributions from Brian Eno on 'Sing' (which he co-wrote) and 'Here She Comes'. The band named the album after a skit performed by the Jerky Boys, an American comedy duo that recorded prank phone calls.

The English shoegaze band Slowdive formed in 1989 and consisted of Nick Chaplin (bass), Rachel Goswell (vocals, guitar), Christian Savill (guitar) and the band's primary songwriter Neil Halstead (vocals, guitar).
The production on Slowdive's debut commenced shortly after Halstead convinced Alan McGee, head of Creation Records, the band had enough songs written for a full-length album. Slowdive actually did not.
The group hurriedly began writing songs in the studio, experimenting with sounds and cannabis during the process.

PygmalionWhen Slowdive disbanded in 1995 music fans widely associated it with the demise of the shoegaze genre. Their last sign of life was Pygmalion and it was, after Just For A Day and Souvlaki a totally different and more abstract album. Where the band attempted to put more song structures in place on Souvlaki, they began to incorporate more elements of ambient electronica on Pygmalion. Which resulted in a more complete album than the two previous albums. Jaded LoveAt first blush, it might seem easy to dismiss The Beautiful Ones as yet another in a long line of current hardcore bands aping late '80s NYHC conventions. Upon further investigation, a deeper and more genuine aesthetic becomes apparent, as evidenced on their new full length, Jaded Love.
The NYHC elements are undeniably present, yet a broader spectrum of influences stand out as well. In Between (Discontinued) (On Sale)Kanine Records presents, In Between, the sophomore release from San Francisco's Young Prisms and follow-up to their acclaimed 2011 debut Friends For Now. Still a five piece, (albeit a different five) the album captures the highs and the lows of the last year. Born out of a traumatizing Heathrow Airport crisis and the death of a loved one, a strong sense of rejection, loneliness, and despair all play a huge role in the creation of In Between.
However, Its not all doom and gloom and its not like childhood friends Gio Betteo and Matthew Allen didnt see the changes coming (they named their first album Friends For Now). They just didnt expect it all to happen in such a dramatic fashion. Still united with singer Stefanie Hodapp and drummer Jordan Silbert, the Young Prisms welcome a second female vocalist/guitarist in Ashley Thomas.
Its this addition that brings a softer, more melodic touch to their fuzzed out sound. HyperviewEvery artist bio has its stock narrative: first comes the lengthy Juvenile Period (trial, error, rejection); then, dues having been paid, comes the electrifying Breakthrough (critical praise, general validation), which inaugurates the terminal Mature Period (respect of peers, reliable buying public, steadily diminishing relevance). Those who make it to that third stage, the story goes, might as well get comfortable, for they've achieved Success.
In 2012, Title Fight, a four-piece from Kingston, Pa., then known for a screamingly insistent brand of melodic hardcore, was right on schedule. Having formed in 2003 while its members (bassist/vocalist Ned Russin, guitarist/vocalist Jamie Rhoden, guitarist Shane Moran, and drummer Ben Russin) were in middle school, the band had begun in typically wobbly fashion with several pop-punk demos, split singles, and EPs. Then, in the spring of 2011, the Breakthrough had arrived in the form of Shed, their debut long player, a blistering, throat-shedding blend of Gorilla Biscuits, Turning Point, and Jawbreaker that won the heart of every hardcore and punk kid from the Warped Tour to Chaos in Tejas - and of every critic from Alternative Press to NME. When the follow-up LP, Floral Green, unexpectedly appeared a scant 16 months later, it bore some new, high-end influences (Hum, Slowdive, the Sundays) and engendered the reasonable assumption that Title
Fight had landed comfortably in their Mature Period.
Hyperview, Title Fight's third LP, sets those assumptions on their head. Taking the measure of Hyperview's massive leap forward from previous releases is difficult to accomplish with words. The listener is periodically
struck by faint echoes of the familiar (the Floral Greenishly tuneful and driving "Chlorine") and of the canonical (the incantatory downstroke pummel of My Bloody Valentine's Isn't Anything period, as on "New Vision"; a Scratch Acid bassline jarringly yet winningly resolving itself into a Chapterhouse swirl, as on "Hypernight"), but this is an album that renders futile the exercise of conceiving bands as sums of influences.

CavemanOn Their self-titled sophomore album, Caveman strech thier legs in a number of different, albeit cohesive, directions.
Caveman-a five-man vibe collective from NYC-released their first album in 2011. As first albums go, CoCo Beware was something akin to a moody statement of intent, a blueprint for a band quickly learning how to create horizon-wide rock songs that were equal parts intimate and expansive. Initially self-released and later snatched up by Fat Possum for re-release in early 2012, the record brims over with four-part harmonies, crystalline guitar lines, and tracks that see-sawed between echoey lullaby ("A Country's King of Dreams") to shoegaze-by-way-of classic-FM-radio sprawl ("Old Friend"). The album quickly elevated Caveman from local band to watch to a sizable touring draw and formidable live act, as evidenced by stints on the road with the likes of The War on Drugs, White Rabbits and Built to Spill. Despite being the work of a brand new band, CoCo Beware displayed a kind of Zen-like ease. It was the sound a five friends settling into a nice groove; the music that happens when, for whatever reason, a lot of seemingly disparate elements finally fall into place.
"We all went up to Jimmy's grandmother's place in New Hampshire," says singer Matthew Iwanusa. "That's where the new record kind of started. It was literally the attic of her barn, lit up by Christmas lights. We'd all sit in this one room together and one by one we'd all go into the bathroom and record ourselves making the most psycho noises possible. It actually felt kind of like a weird breakthrough. We were all confident and comfortable enough with each other to try out these experiments, which extended itself into the making of the new record which is really just an evolution of this vibe that we'd been cultivating for long time."
With that, the guys holed up in Brooklyn's Rumpus Room to start recording in earnest with Nick Stumpf (who produced the band's debut album) and Albert Di Fiore behind the controls. The album is a kind of sonic microcosm-a series of emotional yet tough mini-narratives operating within the same quixotic musical universe.
As a result, the guitars on Caveman are bigger and more expansive, the rhythm section is tighter and more adventurous, the keyboards more opaque and pronounced. Like a marriage between Tangerine Dream, late period Slowdive, and Lindsey Buckingham, tracks like their new single "In the City" and "Ankles" boast synth lines that sound simultaneously retro and futuristic, while "Pricey" and "Never Want to Know" overflow with guitar sounds that could have miraculously floated off an old Cure album. It should be noted that James Carbonetti, the band's primary guitar player, also happens to be one of the most highly regarded guitar makers in New York City.
And while Caveman's music could certainly operate on the level of dreamy soundscape and still be excellent, the depth of feeling in front man Matthew Iwanusa's lyrics helps weave the songs deeply into your memory. When Iwanusa sings Where's the time to waste on someone else's life? on "Where's the Time," it's hard not to read between the lines.
