The Great Adventures Of Slick Rick

25th Anniversay Of The Great Adventures of Slick Rick

Re-Issue Of Out Of Print Vinyl

Certified Platinum By The Recording Industry Association Of America

After he gained legendary status rapping on Doug E. Fresh's La Di Da Di, it was only a matter of time before the world would clutch British-born Ricky Walters to its heart. Rick had already fancied himself a rabid storyteller (and a mighty good one) on Fresh's track The Show, and Great Adventures became Slick Rick's novella. Not content with one perspective, Slick Rick often employed tag-team rhyming with himself as his own partner (Mona Lisa, Teacher Teacher). His cautionary tales (Hey Young World, Children's Story, Teenage Love) work much better than his freaky tales (Treat Her Like a Prostitute, Indian Girl). Still, it doesn't take a musicologist to appreciate the complex rhyme schemes and scenarios of The Moment I Feared, Children's Story, and Mona Lisa, and his slight accent heightened his distinctiveness. Despite lukewarm response to his follow-up--as well as a stint in the pokey--Slick Rick will always be remembered for his Great Adventures, an essential B-boy document. --Todd Inoue

    Curtain Call: The Hits

Eminem's four studio albums shattered so many sales records that you might think just about every man, woman and gerbil on the planet already owns a bulk of the songs that make up this greatest hits collection. But Curtain Call presents the perfect opportunity to have another look at the life of Marshall Mathers. Starting out in the vein of the Beastie Boys and Slick Rick, he grafted filthy verses over bubbly nursery rhyme melodies and primitive Casio beats to come up with comical singles like 'My Name Is' and 'Real Slim Shady.' Then angst and reflection set in, resulting in rare moments of vulnerability ('Lose Yourself') and a richer musical experience ('Stan'). The three new tracks reflect the entire spectrum, with 'When I'm Gone,' a bittersweet goodbye letter, signaling the raw emotion and youthful enthusiasm of his early days have substantially faded, while 'Fack' counters that the Detroit rapper still has the dirtiest mouth in the business.

Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star

Limited Edition Two-Tone Black On Black Picture Disc

Universal Music Enterprises (UMe) will continue its "Respect the Classics" tribute to many of hip-hop's finest with the vinyl release of rap icon Talib Kweli's
four historic Rawkus Records albums, including the underground classic, Mos Def & Talib Kweli are Black Star, in a limited edition two-tone black on black
    picture disc.

Mos Def & Talib Kweli are Black Star was originally released on August 18, 1998, to critical acclaim. The title is a reference to the Black Star Line, a shipping
company founded by Pan-Africanist Marcus Garvey. The album deals with modern-day issues, philosophies and life in Brooklyn. The two MCs had
planned to release solo albums around the same time, but decided instead to collaborate on a full-length album. The first single, "Definition (song)," is a
reaction to hip-hop's fascination with death, dedicated to both Tupac Shakur and the Notorious B.I.G., with a chorus that gives a nod to Boogie Down
Productions' "Stop the Violence." "Children's Story" is a re-imagination of the Slick Rick original, featuring Mos Def cautioning against materialism. The
second single, "Respiration," featuring Common, includes a Hi-Tek produced beat that samples Don Randi's "The Fox" and another from the hip-hop
documentary Style Wars. The track offers a melancholy ode to city life, with references to organic life functions such as breathing, eating and sleeping,
but with an ominous edge, as Kweli raps about "sitting on shitty steps/we stooped to new lows, hell froze/the night the city slept." The album peaked at
No. 53 on the Billboard Top 200 and No. 13 on the Hip-Hop Albums chart, but has become considered a classic since then.

    South Of Heaven

When it comes to death metal, no band is more convincing than Slayer. For other bands, focusing on death, Satanism, the supernatural, and the occult became a clichÉ; but Slayer's controversial reflections on evil always came across as honest and heartfelt. The group's sincerity is the thing that makes South of Heaven so disturbing and powerful -- when the influential thrashers rip into such morbid fare as Spill the Blood, Mandatory Suicide, and Ghosts of War, they are frighteningly convincing. With their fourth album, Slayer began to slow their tempos without sacrificing an iota of heaviness or incorporating any pop elements. South of Heaven would be Slayer's last album for Def Jam. When Rick Rubin and Russell Simmons (brother of Joseph Run Simmons of Run-D.M.C.) parted company, Slayer went to Rubin's new company Def American, while LL Cool J, Slick Rick, and other rappers recorded for Simmons at Def Jam.

There's a strong, vibrant formal tradition in hip hop: the story rhyme. Rather than the bragging and boasting of many raps, in a story rhyme the MC presents a narrative-- a street update of Ovid or Homer if you want to get hifalutin about it. Traced back by some to The Message by Melle Mel, few would dispute that it reached some sort of a peak with Slick Rick's first album, and was carried forward by the likes of Biggie and Eminem. It also had a profound influence on rap in the UK, with artists like Roots Manuva using the form to represent themselves and their city in a myriad of new ways.

    The Cookbook (Pre-Order)

With The Cookbook, the innovative Missy Elliott proves to the masses she is a musical mad scientist whose artistic abilities are unparalleled and without peer. Elliott is a quadruple threat: rapper, singer, songwriter and producer; add that to her woman-empowered lyrics and Missy's ability to be a musical and mental role model is inarguable. As a producer, Missy Elliott knows how to build a great project by incorporating the best talent available, an easy task since so many want to work with her. Not surprisingly, The Cookbook is filled with a world-class guest list.

That very large list includes American Idol winner Fantasia , cRunk&B queen Ciara , old-school rapper Slick Rick , dancehall sensation M.I.A. (on the drumline-heavy Bad Man) and the current queen of soul, Mary J. Blige . In a reversal of roles, My Struggles finds Missy singing Ya'll don't really know my life, y'all don't really know my struggles while Mary J. raps over a sample of herself from What's The 411. One unexpected surprise is Missy sings out more than on previous releases. The bare-bones Remember When is a definite standout, a 70's-inspired slow jam highlighted by her honest lyrics, sweet falsetto and jazz-affected tones. The beautiful melancholy of Teary Eyed is another standout, an amen-inducing testament to a relationship gone wrong and the beginning of the healing process.

To hear Missy sing with full rawness and no bravado is a further testament to her talents and will likely bring an even larger audience into her fold. - Denise Sheppard

    The Ecstatic (Pre-Order)

The Ecstatic is the 2009 fourth studio album by American rapper Mos Def. After venturing further away from hip hop with an acting career and two poorly received albums, Mos Def signed with Downtown Records and recorded The Ecstatic primarily at the Record Plant in Los Angeles. He worked with producers such as Preservation, Mr. Flash, Oh No, and Madlib, the latter two of whom reused instrumentals they had produced on Stones Throw Records. Singer Georgia Anne Muldrow, formerly of the record label, was one of the album's few guest vocalists, along with rappers Slick Rick and Talib Kweli. The front cover features a still from Charles Burnett's 1978 film Killer of Sheep.

The Ecstatic was described by music journalists as a conscious and alternative hip hop record with an eccentric, internationalist quality. Mos Def's raps about global politics, love, spirituality, and social conditions were informed by the zeitgeist of the late 2000s, Black internationalism, and Pan-Islamic ideas, as he incorporated a number of Islamic references throughout the album. Its loosely structured, lightly reverbed songs used unconventional time signatures and samples taken from a variety of international musical styles, including Afrobeat, soul, Eurodance, jazz, reggae, Latin, and Middle Eastern music. Mos Def titled The Ecstatic after one of his favorite novels-the 2002 Victor LaValle book of the same name-believing its titular phrase evoked his singular creative vision for the album.

When Dyan Hoffman, Rick Bolz, Ron Raschdorf and W.A. Farrens drove 350 miles through the mighty redwood groves down to San Francisco to cut their first album at Leo de Gar Kulka's Golden State Recorders, they couldn't have picked a better time. It was the summer of 1967, now known as the Summer Of Love, and San Francisco was inundated with young people from all over the world, spurred on by a blossoming rock scene that included Jefferson Airplane, Big Brother and the Holding Co. and the Grateful Dead. And yet, none of those legends in the making ever cut an album as hard to find these days, extremely rare and collectible, as this LP by the Neighb'rhood Childr'n.

Not only is their record hideously hard to find, it's amazingly groovy coming from four kids from a rural background. Dyan's voice has the earnest zeal of a young Grace Slick, and the complex arrangements run the table from acid-soaked tripsichord to fiery anthems meant to spur on a new generation of street-fighting men as well as lonely navigators of the mind. Not surprisingly, Dyan reveals that some of this amazing material was inspired by seeing Quicksilver Messenger Service for the first time. They were always my favorite group, she says. It just goes to show what you can soak up and give back to the world if your heart is in the right place.
