    Moonlight Sinatra

This 1965 album was another one of Sinatra's 'theme' albums, and a beautiful one at that. With Neslon Riddle's excellent arrangements, Moonlight Sinatra (get it?) features 10 beautifully performed songs that have the word 'moon' in their title ('Moonlight Becomes You', 'Moonlight Serenade', 'Oh, You Crazy Moon', etc). This is Sinatra as laid back and comfortable as possible, enjoying the romantic spirit of the songs.

An Unforgettable Exhibition of Stellar Melodies, Gorgeous Arrangements, and Fully Bared Emotion: Elvis Costello and Burt Bacharach's Brilliant Painted from Memory a Collaboration for the Ages

Mastered from the Original Master Tapes and Strictly Limited to 3,000 Numbered Copies: Mobile Fidelity 180g LP of Painted from Memory Features Incredible Detail, Lushness, Textures, and Scope

Elvis Costello and Burt Bacharach's Painted from Memory endures as an extraordinary exhibition of prime music making, gorgeous arranging, and naked emotion. Having transpired after the pair teamed up on God Give Me Strength for a film soundtrack (and the closing track here), the album has since gone on to become one of the most respected - and admired - projects of each artist's considerable careers. Its expert employment of melody and harmony imparts a timelessness that stretches back to pop's golden age and icons such as Roy Orbison, Ray Charles, and Frank Sinatra. Further boosted by meticulous production, it has long called out for audiophile treatment. Mobile Fidelity's analog reissue brings it all full circle.

Mastered from the original master tapes, pressed on dead-quiet 180g vinyl at RTI, and strictly limited to 3,000 numbered copies, Mobile Fidelity's vinyl LP of Painted from Memory transforms the 1998 set into an essential component of any library. Always an effort that rewarded solitary listening, it now breathes with ravishing openness, reveals crystalline detail, unfolds against jet-back backgrounds, mesmerizes with a rainbow of textures, and constantly engages with its impossible smoothness. For the first time, the scope of the intricacies, nuances, and phrasings embedded in Bacharach's meticulous compositions can be experienced in full. The orbit of the bridges, refrains, and codas beguiles the senses. Ditto the poetic reach of Costello's singing and lyrics.

Indeed, the level of care and concern invested into every passage of Painted from Memory is immediately gleaned by the ravishing sonics afforded on this collectable edition - amazingly, the first time this title has been available on LP. Reference-grade presence, tonality, and balance help capture the sweep of the strings, colorful blush of the horn accents, and weight of the piano. Steve Nieve's keyboards, Greg Cohen's bass, Dean Parks' guitar, and Jim Keltner's drums seemingly appear right in the room. Rather than smear together or jockey for position, each instrument enjoys its own place and simultaneously sounds part of the rich, lush, complex albeit completely interwoven tapestry. Graceful, elegant, and classicist-minded, Painted from Memory is a genuine masterpiece - and a true collaboration.

No wonder Costello dedicated a large portion of a chapter from his Unfaithful Music & Disappearing Ink memoir to his time with Bacharach. Among his insights, Costello explains how crafting the album forced him to be a better writer and singer - and a better listener, stating: Writing those first songs with Burt Bacharach required me to listen to what the music was really saying to me. Sometimes it was speaking so quietly that I needed to listen very intently. I needed time for the meaning and feeling that I sensed in the music to be confirmed by my own words. The strange thing was that the title of a song often came to me in an instant, but then would begin the more excruciating task of negotiating Burt's spacious melodies and rhythmic subtleties.

The very aspects Costello discusses come to the forefront on remarkable torch pieces such as the intensely dramatic This House Is Empty Now, melancholic Thief, and Grammy-winning I Still Have That Other Girl. In addition to Bacharach's suave, sophisticated, strikingly exquisite orchestrations, Costello's vocals carry the day. Straddling two octaves and sighing with pain, bittersweet romance, and wistful reflection, his baritone stretching to convey highs and lows with crooner-like poise, breadth, and fastidiousness. Thrilling, distinctive, and memorable, the performances are just like the entirety of Painted from Memory itself - unforgettably great.

Numbered Limited Edition 180g LP from Mobile Fidelity

Legendary Crooner Backed by Orchestra Conducted by Nelson Riddle

1960 Capitol Album of Then-Recent and Classic Standards Arguably Martin's Most Timeless Set: MoFi Edition Includes Bonus Track Ain't That a Kick in the Head

Mastered from the Original Master Tapes: No Martin Album Sounds Like This

Dean Martin was always at his best when he sounded effortless, when the singing required no exertion-just the same amount of investment required to order a martini. Confident, refined, breezy, and easygoing, this 1960 Capitol album epitomizes the crooner's charm. In pairing with arranger and Frank Sinatra right-hand-man Nelson Riddle, Martin strikes all the right notes on this collection of then-recent and retro standards.

Mastered from the original master tapes and pressed at RTI, Mobile Fidelity's 180g LP gets inside the core being of Martin's impeccably smooth, relaxed singing by presenting every phrase, dip, and inflection with lifelike realism. The LP does similar wonders for Riddle's backing orchestra. Horns teem with punch and midrange; rhythms possess incredible pacing; strings saunter and float. No Martin album has ever sounded like this. Mobile Fidelity also secured the rights to a bonus track, Ain't That a Kick in the Head, left off the album and released as a single in order to promote the movie Ocean's Eleven.

While Martin enjoyed his biggest commercial success at Reprise, the aptly titled This Time I'm Swingin' is considered by many critics and vocal-pop fans to be his finest studio hour. He approaches each song with supreme confidence and debonair control, never overreaching his limits or breaking a sweat. Here, he more than lives up to his nickname: The King of Cool. Charismatic, assured, and note-perfect, the album belongs alongside any of the period sets cut by his pal and once-and-future labelmate Sinatra. No wonder that his most recognized hit, the aforementioned and included "Ain't That a Kick in the Head," was actually cut at these sessions.

Riddle's expert ordering of the charts and direction of horns, strings, and piano equates to jazz and swing genius. Brass blows hard and strong during breaks, calm down for verses during which slinky 88s and swaying strings join the dance, and then rise up, the mix elegantly performed and irresistibly catchy. If you're not snapping your fingers and instantly transported to a swank nightclub within the first few passages of the opening "I Can't Believe That You're In Love With Me," check your system's setup.

Yet Martin is the real star. Hearing him handle such classics as the devotional "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face," upbeat "You're Nobody 'Til Somebody Loves You," hopeful "Someday (You'll Want Me to Want You)," bluesy "You're Mean to Me," and clever "Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone" with such aplomb-and now, in such ravishing detail-will remind you why you love music, and why nothing of this ilk will likely ever be made again.

Martin convincingly conveys the mood each song demands, but a sense of optimism, playfulness, and feel-good romance pervade this stylish effort. If you are a fan of real singing and emotional crooning, you cannot live without this analog edition. A veritable gem.

    Scott

No one could deny Scott Walker is an unpredictable artist. Once the lead singer for the Walker Brothers (famous for their string laden Sixties defining hits Make It Easy On Yourself and The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore) he released his first solo album Scott in 1967. Eschewing all Pop trends at the time, Walker stepped it up a notch, crooning with a nod to Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett and chansonnier Jacques Brel. A pretty bold move indeed, in a time when Pop music sounded psychedelic, bare and up-tempo.

His philosophical lyrics are accompanied by lavishly orchestrated tracks making Scott a wildly interesting listen. His approach paid off: the album reached the Top 3 in Great Britain and was the first in a string of very successful solo albums. One of the songs on this album (The Lady Came from Baltimore) was written by Tim Hardin, whose Bird On A Wire is released on March 4.

    No One Cares (On Sale)

Mastered from the Original Master Tapes

Sometimes it's okay to judge a book by its cover. Depicting a down-and-out Frank Sinatra entrenched in his own private world while glamorous couples dance and swirl around him, oblivious to his presence and condition, the artwork to the aptly titled No One Cares testifies on behalf of the music and moods within the record's grooves. One of the crooner's top-flight ballads efforts, the 1959 Capitol effort again finds him pairing with sympathetic arranger Gordon Jenkins and inhabiting each note of every song.

Hear the fruits of this timeless collaboration in fresh light on Mobile Fidelity's numbered, limited edition 180 gram LP. Mastered from the original master tapes, this newly minted version of No One Cares caresses the senses via its profound instrumental depth, widescreen soundstage, front-to-back perspective, transparent high-frequency responses, and dynamic midrange. Neither too close-up nor too distant, Sinatra's voice is rendered with realistic scale and gorgeous balance to the extent that nothing is artificially sweetened or heightened. Akin to Mobile Fidelity's previous Sinatra reissues, this LP is meticulously rendered to the highest-possible standards, ensuring that the fidelity is in line with the timeless performances and the iconic singer's exacting standards.

Often viewed as the sister album to 1957's Where Are You?, this third pairing of Sinatra and Jenkins yields slower tempos, more deliberate textures, and lonelier emotions. A profound sense of tragedy burrows into both the luscious strings and Sinatra's timbre, laced with ache, wanderlust, and dismay. Jokingly referred to by Ol' Blue Eyes as one of his "suicide albums," it instead harnesses the wrenching agony, painful solitude, and desolate helplessness that accompany romantic loss and failure of fulfillment. They're universal sentiments, and sensations Sinatra convincingly conveys, envisioning himself as the protagonist in each of the songs.

Rich and fully developed, the arrangements consistently trace Sinatra's footsteps rather than ever overwhelming or competing with him. Instrumental flourishes accent the Voice's own swells and silences, while a classically stated elegance and plaintive devices contribute to an underlying subtlety. Rare has a singer achieved frank introspection and reflective intimacy in such hurtful, believable fashion. Sinatra's voice comes on without a hiccup, his phenomenal baritone and breath control epitomizing ageless singing. You don't want to be without this one.

    Sinatra's Swingin' Session (On Sale)

Mastered from the Original Master Tapes

Legend has it that when Frank Sinatra initially stepped into the recording studio for the first of four sessions, he asked Nelson Riddle to speed up the tempos to the songs that landed on Sinatra's Swingin' Session!!! It's safe to say that the arranger followed orders and that the results-buoyant, cheery, fun, exuberant, zesty, and wonderfully jazzy-speak for themselves. This 1961 effort remains the Chairman's fastest, hardest-swinging set. And oh, how it swaggers.

Mastered from the original master tapes, Mobile Fidelity's numbered limited edition 180 gram LP of this gem possesses a punchiness, immediacy, forcefulness, and dynamic heft that rivals even what's heard on a pristine original Capitol pressing-provided you can even find one. The reissue will help convert your room into a studio stuffed with horn players and percussionists, with Sinatra, decked out in a trademark fedora and suit, holding court at the center of it all. Sinatra's Swingin' Session!!! isn't a live album, but it hits with the gusto and tang of one.

Forget about incorrect rumors that state that this album was only completed due to contractual obligations and that Sinatra hurried through the material. No matter the circumstances, nothing here is tossed-off or rushed. As always, Sinatra takes it all seriously, pouring his all into each of the dozen tracks here. He wouldn't have it any other way. Name another singer from his era (or any) that could possibly keep time with these uptempo beats and sound as if he isn't even breaking a sweat. Needless to say, Sinatra has a blast making it all happen.

Riddle's arrangements help push forward the tunes, whether they be happy standards such as "When You're Smiling (The Whole World Smiles With You)," optimistic finger-snappers like "S'posin'," or the evergreen "Blue Moon," punctuated with a memorable tenor sax solo. Melodies unfurl like red ribbons on packages; grooves alternate between galloping and gallivanting; even ballads can't resist moving to joyous rhythmic patterns. Throughout, Sinatra's casual, uninhibited singing rises above the band, producing emotions that are at once frisky, lighthearted, pleasurable, and contagious. Dust off your dancing shoes.

Where Are You? (Awaiting Repress) (On Sale)

Mastered from the Original Master Tapes

Where Are You? is perfect in every sense. Recorded when Frank Sinatra was 42, the torch album finds him in impeccable voice and spirit. The dozen tracks fit together as a unified whole; it's difficult to imagine one song missing, or another added. Arranger Gordon Jenkins reads Sinatra's mind, affording him with lush arrangements that break hearts and underscore deliberation. Topping it off, Sinatra's interpretive skills utterly astonish. Genres aside, this 1957 Capitol classic is inarguably one of the ten-best vocal pop efforts made in the 1950s.

The record's splendid beauty and unparalleled emotionalism surface like never before on Mobile Fidelity's numbered, limited edition 180g mono LP. Mastered from the original master tapes, this mono version focuses the instrumentalists, images, vocals, and ambience in a transparent manner that exceeds the detail on the more-common stereo version. In addition, this reissue marks the first time this gem has been made available in mono in several decades. Akin to Mobile Fidelity's previous Sinatra titles, the sound and clarity on this LP takes the Voice into your room, puts him on an imaginary studio stage, and gives you your own private concert.

While not as known as Only the Lonely, Where Are You? is its creative equivalent, a poignant masterwork on which Sinatra reflects on what could have been, ponders life's deep questions, elicits sympathy via romantic distress, and does whatever it takes to get through the night. It is one of Sinatra's alone-at-the-bar statements, his fedora pulled slightly over his eyes, his face fixated on his drink, his only friend the understanding bartender that will keep pouring until last call. Throughout, Sinatra delves into sorrow and desolation. Yet unlike the stark gloom and bleak bitterness on In the Wee Small Hours, this solitary statement echoes with an accepting wistfulness and maturity that parallels a change of seasons-or situations.

Jenkins' warm, classically informed arrangements grant Sinatra the sentiments and support he needs. The sumptuous melodies and burnished strings complement the singer's completely natural delivery; seldom has Sinatra sounded so relaxed, dramatic, warm, cello-like, and in a zone. His lyrical phrasing and rhythmic time-keeping are spot-on; his soulfulness and sensitivity of another world. Sinatra's renditions of "Laura," "Autumn Leaves," and "Lonely Town" are the reference-bearing performances of these famous standards. If you are a fan of vocal music, consider this album mandatory.

    This Is Sinatra Volume Two

Another collection of Sinatra singles and B-sides with backings courtesy of Nelson Riddle, following 1956's This Is Sinatra!. It also included seven new tracks, all recorded in late 1957: I Believe, Everybody Loves Somebody, It's the Same Old Dream, Time After Time, You'll Always Be the One I Love, If You Are But a Dream, and Put Your Dreams Away. Since Sinatra first recorded these songs in the 1940s, and since most deal with dreams, they might have been meant for a concept album that never came to completion.

Wait for Me is a song from the 1956 film Johnny Concho, a Western in which Sinatra starred.

    Live At The Sands

Between 1960 and 1965 (and briefly in 1988), the three singers performed together off and on, and their stage act has been captured in various media. There is film of their performances in 1960 in Las Vegas during the making of Ocean's Eleven, a recording of their show at a nightclub near Chicago in the fall of 1962 legitimately released in 1999 as The Summit: In Concert, and a videotape of a closed-circuit benefit performance from 1965. In September 1963, preparing for another group film, Robin and the Seven Hoods, the three got together during a Martin engagement at the Sands in Las Vegas, and Sinatra had his record label, Reprise, record the proceedings, but ultimately decided against releasing an album at the time. This is that recording, and much of it will sound familiar to anyone who has encountered other Rat Pack shows. In his liner notes, Bill Zehme quotes Bill Miller, Sinatra's accompanist, as saying that maybe 30 percent of the act was ad libbed. Miller added, Usually by Dean, and that sounds right. As usual, Martin begins with comic rewrites of standards, in particular a version of Cole Porter's I Love Paris rendered as I Love Vegas. Sinatra follows with a straight six-song set, and then he and Martin joke it up for a while before giving way to a brief set by Davis. Many of the jokes are repeated from previous performances, but some are new. The key, of course, is the trio's camaraderie, which remains a delight.

    Sinatra & Basie (Bonus Track)

    Includes Bonus Track!

The long-awaited first collaboration between two icons, Count Basie and Frank Sinatra, did something unique for the reputations of both. For Basie, the Sinatra connection inaugurated a period in the '60s where his band was more popular and better-known than it ever was, even in the big-band era. For Sinatra, Basie meant liberation, producing perhaps the loosest, rhythmically free singing of his career. Propelled by the irresistible drums of Sonny Payne, Sinatra careens up to and around the tunes, reacting jauntily to the beat and encouraging Payne to swing even harder, which was exactly the way to interact with the Basie rhythm machine -- using his exquisite timing flawlessly. Also the members of the Basie band play a more prominent role than usual on a Sinatra record, with soloists like Frank Wess -- in some of the finest flute work of his life -- and tenors Frank Foster and Eric Dixon getting prominent solo opportunities on several of the tracks. The record was criticized by some as a letdown when it came out, probably because Neal Hefti's charts rarely permit the band to roar, concentrating on use of subtlety and space. Yet the record's restraint has worn very well over the long haul -- it doesn't beat you into submission -- and it concludes with its best shot, a wonderfully playful treatment of I Won't Dance.

Songs for Swingin' Lovers! is the tenth studio album recorded by the American singer Frank Sinatra for Capitol Records, it was arranged by Nelson Riddle and released in March 1956.

It took an alternative tack after In the Wee Small Hours (1954), recording existing pop standards in a hipper, jazzier fashion, revealing an overall exuberance in the vein of Songs for Young Lovers and Swing Easy!. The original cover had Sinatra facing away from the young couple, but in 1957 Capitol altered the cover with a new image of Sinatra facing the couple.

The album was the first ever number one album in the UK.

The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern

Following the enormous success of his #1, Grammy-Award winning album with Lady Gaga, Cheek To Cheek, this release continues the classic series of Tony Bennett album releases celebrating the essentials of the Great American Songbook. The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern is an appreciation of the genius of Jerome David Kern (1885-1945), one of the 20th century's most important American composers of musical theater and popular music.

Tony Bennett is the only artist to successfully bridge the worlds of pop music and jazz on an international scale for over 60 years. The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern become parts of a timeless legacy of recordings that Bennett has done throughout his career that have embraced both genres, in particular the revered piano jazz albums that he recorded with the late Bill Evans in 1975 and 1977. Tony has become synonymous with the pop/jazz connection and in recent years has been a mentor to contemporary artists such as Lady Gaga and the late Amy Winehouse in encouraging them to embrace jazz music. With his 90th birthday less than a year away, The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern defines what makes Tony Bennett unique in the pantheon of great singers and is a testament to the legacy that he continues to create as a recording artist and influence in the music industry.

Over the course of his career, Kern composed more than 700 songs, creating musical elements used in more than 100 stage works, collaborating with the greatest lyricists and librettists of the era including P.G. Wodehouse, Oscar Hammerstein II, Dorothy Fields, Johnny Mercer, Ira Gershwin, E.Y. Harburg and many others on a seemingly limitless repertoire of classic songs including Ol' Man River, Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man, Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, The Way You Look Tonight, Long Ago and Far Away and many more.

New York native Jerome Kern was a major force on Broadway and in Hollywood musicals in a career that spanned more than four decades. He expanded on earlier musical theater traditions, from vaudeville to operetta, to embrace new dance rhythms, syncopation and jazz progressions and helped invent the modern musical template. While many of his Broadway musicals and Hollywood musical films were contemporary smash hits, Kern is perhaps best remembered today through revivals of Show Boat, one of his signature achievements.

In his liner notes for The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern, music historian Will Friedwald describes Kern as ...the key link between the great music of historical and contemporary classics, a direct connection between Brahms and Charlie Parker....a key architect of a uniquely American art form that would eventually take shape as musical theater....one of the founding fathers of a term that Tony Bennett later coined himself, 'the Great American Songbook.' Friedwald writes about music and popular culture for The Wall Street Journal, worked with Tony Bennett on Tony's The Good Life memoir, and is author of eight books including the award-winning A Biographical Guide to the Great Jazz and Pop Singers, Sinatra! The Song Is You, Stardust Melodies, and Jazz Singing.

The idea of a Kern Songbook project was Tony's, writes Will Friedwald, thereby placing Kern on the very short list of canonical composers (Rodgers & Hart, Harold Arlen, Duke Ellington, Irving Berlin, and Cy Coleman) who have been the beneficiaries of an entire album by Bennett. It was also Bennett's idea to create the album in collaboration with the remarkable Bill Charlap....who can also take a great song we all know by heart and make us feel like we've never heard it before.

Playing alongside Tony Bennett and Bill Charlap on The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern are pianist Renee Rosnes (on the piano duet pieces), Peter Washington (bass) and Kenny Washington (drums). Unrelated, though sharing the same last name, Peter and Kenny have been performing with Bill Charlap for nearly two decades and pianist Renee Rosnes has been Charlap's life partner for close to 10 years.

With more than 700 Jerome Kern compositions to choose from, the set list for The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern is a distillation of essential highlights from a boundless catalog. With these interpretations of some of Jerome Kern's finest songs, Tony Bennett and Bill Charlap offer a definitive introduction to Kern's music while providing a deep understanding of the abiding and universal qualities of these songs.
