    Sign 'O' The Times

It begins with the insistent drip-drop of a sequencer and ends with some old school R&B. In between, the artist who was still calling himself Prince unfurls an encyclopedia of moods, genres, and grooves. Widely heralded as a groundbreaker in 1987, this two-LP set is clearly the sound of a performer at the height of his power. On songs like the title track, If I Was Your Girlfriend, and the thunderous The Cross, Prince proves why the hype was justified. --Amy Linden

Lovesexy is the tenth full-length studio album by Prince. It was originally released worldwide in May 1988, 13 months after his previous album Sign O' The Times.

As an artistic statement, the initial release of the album was not split into tracks, but was instead tracked as one single 45:07 track, designed to be listened to as a whole (track titles were included, however). Later releases split the album into the nine named tracks, however.

    Sign 'O' The Times (Single)

    12 Maxi-Single Reissue

Featuring Sign 'O' The Times And La, La, La, He, He, Hee

Sign o' the Times is the lead single from American musician Prince's 1987 album of the same name. The song was originally intended for two separate Prince albums meant to be released in 1986, that were both shelved: Dream Factory and Crystal Ball. Prince sings and performs the entire track except for some backing vocals by then-girlfriend Susannah Melvoin, sister of Wendy, then a guitarist in The Revolution. Sign o' the Times was written and composed on a Sunday, when Prince usually wrote his most introspective songs.

    Love Sign

Crafting some of the finest guitar-filled power pop this side of Weezer or Cheap Trick-Free Energy signed to NYC powerhouse DFA records (based on their homemade demos) and recorded their debut with James Murphy. They toured for nearly two years behind the release of 2010's Stuck on Nothing and the accolades
came in, including a Best New Music nod from Pitchfork and Rolling Stone's assessment that the band "totally fucking rules."

While it might have seemed an odd fit for a power-riffing pop rock act to put out a record on a West Village disco label, the euphoric vibe of Free Energy perfectly complimented a roster of artistically different but equally accomplished bands, such as Black Dice, Yacht, The Rapture, and LCD Soundsystem. This sophomore release demonstrates the band doing what they love-condensing handclaps, harmonies, massive choruses, and lazer guided guitar leads into tracks like "Electric Fever", "Hey Tonight" and "Girls Want Rock" - while working
a time-tested formula that can still sound fresh in the right hands. Much like their DFA debut, Love Sign flirts with hysteria-inducing pop songwriting and classic rock production, this time around working with John Agnello (Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr.
and The Hold Steady). Released on the band's new imprint "Free Energy Records".

Ranked 499/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

In 1967, the future of electric blues guitar answered to the name of Albert King. It's not like Albert was a green newcomer to the blues world when he strolled through the doors of Memphis-based Stax Records in 1966. After all, he had his first taste of studio action as a band leader more than a dozen years earlier. But the massively constructed southpaw saved his best for Stax. It's virtually impossible to cite a more important or influential blues album from the latter half of the 1960's than BORN UNDER A BAND SIGN...
This Sundazed vinyl edition features the entire classic album with its gorgeous vintage artwork, two rare single sides added as bonus cuts, original liner notes and new annotation by Bill Dahl.

Oh, by now, I must have grown, Alessi Laurent-Marke croons beautifully, four songs into her stunning sophomore album Time Travel.

And hasn't she just - not yet 21 but already a seasoned pro, having recorded her debut album aged just 17, with members of Bright Eyes, and touring with the likes of Laura Marling, Mumford & Sons and Brighton cult faves the Willkommen Collective. Time Travel is the first Alessi's Ark album since signing to Bella Union, where her acutely melodic and exquisitely tender folk-pop charms haven't just grown; they've blossomed into something extraordinarily mature.

    Lost Time (On Sale)

It's been 12 years since the initial release of what would be the very last album by the late Minneapolis based
    12 Rods.

Aptly titled, Lost Time, this last epic perfectly defines and captures how great this band was and how
truly ahead of their time its members were. Not only that but for its city, a city fueled on such great
music, both 12 Rods and this record have gone down as one of Minneapolis' finest.

When musicians that I know gather, sit and talk about the greats, Ryan Olcott always comes up. It's
very hard to try and calculate how deep Olcott's genius goes, when at the time, it felt as if the music
12 Rods was making was in fact from the future. There is the 'Pop' music that is defined by paid-toplay
radio, and the corporate avenues of selling music as a product instead of a
natural commodity. But then there is the 'Pop' music that seems handed down, majestically, true,
whole and unifying. There's little music and even fewer complete albums that live up to such 'Pop'
    majesty. Lost Time is one.

At the time of its release, 12 Rods was in its final form, which included Ryan Olcott and his brilliant
brother/engineer/producer Ev Olcott, sought after bassist Bill Shaw, and one of the best living
drummers in the world today, Dave King. Lost Time was 12 Rods fifth studio album but their first
after being dropped from the deathly heights of mainstream music's claws.

The band was signed by V2 records in the late '90s and were poised to be the next big 'Rock'
band. And so when you think back to 2002, the year Lost Time was released, or even two years prior
when 12 Rods released its fourth studio album, the Todd Rungren-produced, V2-
botched Separation Anxieties, you must consider the landscape of 'Rock' music. Like, the popular
bands that were on MTV. Lit was one of those hugely popular rock bands that wrote catchy
songs about putting hearts in zip-lock bags and had a logo identical to Miller Lite with just the e
taken off. Though, regardless of aesthetic choices, this goes to show the disparity between what 12
Rods actually was and what the industry wanted them to be. It's not that they openly defied their
calling. No, it's just that the music was simply too advanced to be contained in the industries 'Rock
    'n Roll' zip-lock.

Lost Time is one of my most listened to albums of all time. It's one of the only records I know of that
is so full of hooks, yet never feels recycled or fake; it's just so fucking enjoyable from stem to
stern. And now with its first ever vinyl pressing, I hope that this album can be as much a companion
to you as it has for me. Solo listen, party listen, how can it be both? It just is.

With this reissue, it means that Lost Time won't be lost at all - that great things always make their way
through, even if it takes a decade.

    The Right Time (Pure Pleasure)

I first heard Etta James as a young teenager when she had a hit with Tell Mama, a tune that has easily stood the test of time. She recorded this album a quarter-century later and sounded even better.

For The Right Time she returns to the Muscle Shoals studio where she recorded Tell Mama, this time with producer Jerry Wexler, and it's an outstanding match. She hits nary a forced or false note and is backed with a stellar band that includes saxophonist Hank Crawford, guitarist Steve Cropper and bassist Willie Weeks. They plow ahead like a great offensive line blocking for an all-star running back -- one who isn't afraid to lower the shoulder and knock somebody over.

There's plenty of manufactured emotion on records, but you won't find any of it here. Etta just rocks naturally. It's like sitting next to a seasoned story teller in full command of the narrative. Nothing for you to do but sit back, close your eyes and listen.

A sign of great singers for me is how they put a stamp on songs that have been done many times. In that regard, Etta makes Love and Happiness and Ninety And A Half Won't Do her own. She tears up The Night Time Is the Right Time with the help of Crawford's sax. Of course she has the blues well covered, my personal favorite being Down Home Blues, and flashes her humorous side with the trash-talking Wet Match. She hits any note she wants without straining and with total conviction.

But all the songs are top-notch. The best advice for anyone reading this is to just pick up the album and discover the old-school glory of Etta James. - Tyler Smith

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

Dropkick Murphys come out swinging on their eighth full-length album, Signed and Sealed in Blood. This time around, everything has been cranked up past 10. The guitars are ballsier, the gang vocals are louder, the hooks are catchier, the lyrics stop you in your tracks. The brashest moments of Signed and Sealed in Blood feel like the last 30 seconds of a Stanley Cup hockey game: frenetic, on the edge, dangerous. The softest songs are testaments to the values that pump through the Dropkicks' veins: family, neighborhoods, honor, respect, roots and remembering those who are gone. Every second of Signed and Sealed in Blood is evidence of one thing: Dropkick Murphys aren't just loud and brash, they're at the top of their game as songwriters.

    Begone Dull Care

Begone Dull Care is the remarkable new album from the Junior Boys duo of Jeremy Greenspan and Matthew Didemus. The album is the band's third release, following the critical and commercial successes of Last Exit (2004) and So This Is Goodbye (2006). The title is a reference to a short film by the pioneering Oscar-winning Scottish-Canadian animator and electronic composer, Norman McLaren, who was a big influence on the conception and creation of the album. McLaren's influence can be felt throughout the record from the post-industrial stomp of opener Parallel Lines to the soothing romanticism of What It's For, which brings the album to an achingly soft close. Lead single, Hazel could well be described as Sign Of The Times re-imagined as an effervescent song of romantic yearning instead of the predecessor's dark reflection of Reagan's America.

Parade (Music From The Motion Picture Under The Cherry Moon)

Calling this one of Prince's most interesting albums doesn't do justice to how kicky and playable it is. The soundtrack from his romantic comedy Under the Cherry Moon, the album often sounds like a preview of the supremely surefooted quirkiness of its follow-up, the classic Sign o' the Times. Marrying lean funk grooves to over-the-top orchestrations and trying his hand at Parisian balladry and a hushed, Pet Sounds-style instrumental, he triumphs as few other record makers did in 1986. --Rickey Wright

Live At The Red Garter Vol. 2

From the late '60s to the mid '90s, the Fania All Stars were probably the most important and influential group in salsa, Afro-Cuban and Puerto Rican music. What began as a showcase band for a young label developed into a Latino supergroup capable of filling stadiums. The band's members were either successful bandleaders or the top musicians on their instruments at the time. As Fania Records expanded its horizons and endeavoured to reach outside its traditional Spanish speaking market in the 1970s, the All Stars became their musical ambassadors, traveling across the globe from South America to Africa to Europe spreading the salsa gospel.

But that was the future! The Fania All Stars began at the Red Garter Club in Greenwich Village. By 1967 Fania Records was on the rise and label owner Jerry Masucci was wanting to feature a showcase of all his artists, which now included long-established bandleaders Ray Barretto and Fania co-owner Johnny Pacheco, alongside the new generation (Willie Colon, Larry Harlow, Monguito, Joe Bataan, Louie Ramirez, Ralph Robles, Bobby Valentin). The idea was to record a live session which would serve as a showcase for the label using the all star format which had already proved popular by Fania's rivals Tico and Alegre.

In 1968, Masucci and popular Latin music/jazz DJ Symphony Sid talked Red Garter promoter Jack Hooke into putting on a series of nights with the Fania musicians, but to broaden the appeal of the concerts and records, a host of guest stars were added to the bill. The Live At the Red Garter Vol 2 album sleeve reads like a who's who of Afro-Cuban and Puerto Rican music in the late 1960s! Special guest stars include the mambo king Tito Puente, Eddie Palmieri on piano and timbalero/sonero Jimmy Sabater from the million selling Joe Cuba Sextet. A supporting cast from the bands of Puente, Palmieri, Pacheco and Barretto included vocalists Ismael Miranda, Pete Conde Rodriguez, bassist Bobby Rodriguez and timbalero Orestes Vilato. A truly staggering bill though at the time, many musicians were just starting out, Willie Colon was just 18, however, almost every player present at these sessions would go on to be a salsa star in the next decade.

After Barretto's introduction, the band gets counted in and that unmistakable bassline starts, 8 bars of low-end heaven as smooth as Baileys on ice, the trademark riff to Son Cuero Y Boogaloo, a Barretto's signature tune of the period. It's much more than just a boogaloo, it's a son montuno with soul! An earlier version of the song had appeared on Barretto's album Hard Hands, but this live version smoked! After the coro and brass sections traded 8's the tension builds, then the band hits a break and timbalero Orestes Vilato comes in and blazes a monsterous solo.

The next track Noche featured its composer, pianist Larry Harlow, on a slow guajira montuno. Harlow was a non-Latino but his solo is pure Cuban proving it's not where you're from but it's how you play and what you feel that matters! The last track on the opening side was a full-on soul/funk instrumental jam called Red Garter Strut, the Fania All Stars kicking like Junior Walker or the Famous Flames! Another example of the cross-cultural experiments going on at the time in New York.

Side two is equally mixed, a Charlie Palmieri funky montuno salsa called Kikapoo Joy Juice opening the set. An uptempo dance tune with the vocalists singing in English, a sign of the times when boogaloo ruled everything in sight. Next up, If This World Were Mine, a Marvin Gaye cover featuring Joe Bataan and female vocalist La La doing their best Marvin and Tammi Tyrrell impression over a slow soulful latin-tinged groove.Richie's Bag closes side 2, written by and featuring pianist Richie Ray, another soul montuno dancefloor classic with the vocalists singing English lyrics quoting Joe Bataan's present and future hits , Gypsy woman, Subway Joe, "Ordinary Guy.

And that's it! The whole album is just 6-tracks long but it serves as a historical musical document of something new and vibrant that was evolving in Latin New York in the '60s. A coming together of black, white and brown as music crossed ethnic barriers. Music, like society, was attempting to integrate. What Masucci and Pacheco succeeded to do with this recording and Fania Records in general was to bring together the older and new generations of Latin musicians, where it became the roots of what became salsa in the next decade, whilst making the first recordings of the Fania All Stars, the band that would be most associated with spreading the music to a global audience. These reasons make this album a must for any true aficionado of Puerto Rican music from New York.

    East Is East

In East is East, Pepi Ginsberg and her collaborators step into the golden hour of the day and embrace The most ephemeral of seasons. A mood and a time where we know that change is coming in the form of a cool wind; we hold on until we let go. The song 'Summer Sick as Love' accomplishes this feeling, with its mythical descriptions of gutter punks and wind ravaged stop-signs. Ginsberg, with arrangements expertly handled by her band, creates a world with East is East, that is the season in between, and parts the waters, navigating change in the sea of these strange times.

By getting out of the way entirely, the VPI Prime simply let the cartridge do its intended job. Most other turntables make this music 'fall' out of the speakers, but with the VPI it just sang! - Alan Sircom, HiFi +

The past 3 years VPI has been focusing mainly on new/entry level audiophiles and getting them to embrace vinyl for the first time. With the Prime we wanted to get back to our roots and focus on the existing audience with a table that offers quality hi-end sound while taking advantage of our improvements in technology. Also, it was important to show the industry that we will still be making new turntable and designs whether Harry is in the factory or poolside! The Prime is Mat Weisfeld's first solo design on a table with Harry's approval as well as input from the rest of the VPI staff. The shape of the Prime is meant to have a curvier and sexy look compared to the classic look of our tables over the past 10 years. At same time having the footprint to accommodate the space needed for a 10 inch 3D arm.

12 x 5 by The Rolling Stones was their October 1964 release that told the world that they loved the blues and rock 'n roll. The evolution from blues to rock accelerated on this, their second American LP. 12 X 5 included material recorded by the Stones at Chicago's Chess Studios (home to the band's idols Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf) during their first US tour. Though this album of the group's early R&B period kicks off with covers from unsurprising sources (Chuck Berry's Around and Around,) Mick and Keith waste little time in displaying their own compositional acumen.

This highly collectible lithograph and LP set, with a Certificate of Authenticity, is offered on a first-come, first-served basis-no additional copies will be produced after the initial press run is exhausted. Signatures on the printing plates reflect the band's personnel at the time of recording.
