    Inspiration Information

This beautiful Shuggie Otis album went largely overlooked at the time of its release in 1974. Which is a shame, because it's one of those albums that you hear new things in every time it's on the platter. Shuggie played every instrument himself here, giving us a look into his psyche: soothing, subtle, harmonious and elegantly funky. Some say the album is ahead of its time - so much so it would t into the Trip Hop genre with ease. We'll let you decide. All we know is we can't stop playing it!

    Freedom Flight

Freedom Flight, released in the Fall of 1971, is the second album by Shuggie Otis. The album is every bit as adventurous as Shuggie Otis' 1974 masterpiece Inspiration Information. It's a bit rawer, not quite as lush, but it is every bit as visionary and groundbreaking.

Produced by Shuggie's father, Johnny Otis, the album features seven stellar, genre bending cuts, most of which were written or co-written by Shuggie. He played everything from guitars, bass, organ to various percussion instruments. Me and My Woman is one of the funkiest Blues tunes ever recorded.

Additional musicians include Wilton Felder, Stix Hooper, Aynsley Dunbar, Preston Love, George Duke and vocalists Clydie King, Venetta Field, and Shirley Matthews.

    Here Comes Shuggie Otis

Here Comes Shuggie Otis (1971) is the debut album by guitarist and songwriter Shuggie Otis, when he was only 18. Produced and arranged by his father, Johnny Otis and Dan Aldrich, the set features nine original cuts co-written by the pair.

The album is evenly divided between vocal tunes and instrumentals. Shuggie's guitar is improvisational poetry. Shuggie's vocals weren't quite there, and were still somewhat tentative, but his gorgeous guitar solo is right in the pocket. Take the modern Soul Rocker "Baby I Needed You", with a killer hook in the refrain.

Dallas Buyers Club follows the Oscar winning performance by Matthew McConaughey portraying the '80s real life character Ron Woodroof, who's suddenly being diagnosed as H.I.V.- positive and given 30 days to live. Yet he will not, and does not, accept a death sentence. A crash course of research reveals
a lack of approved treatments and medications in the U.S., so Ron crosses the border into Mexico. There, he learns about alternative treatments and begins smuggling them into the U.S.

An outsider to the gay community, Ron finds an unlikely ally
in fellow AIDS patient and transsexual Rayon (another Oscar Winning performance by Jared Leto). They establish a "buyers club," where H.I.V.-positive people pay monthly dues for access to the newly acquired supplies. With a growing community
of friends and clients, Ron fights for dignity, education, and acceptance. In the years following his diagnosis, the embattled Lone Star loner lives life to the fullest like never before.

The soundtrack to triple Academy Award winning feature
film Dallas Buyers Club contains songs by Shuggie Otis, My Morning Jacket, T. Rex and actor/singer Jared Leto's Thirty Seconds To Mars. The first 1000 copies of this double LP are uniquely pressed on Gold and Blue vinyl (each record a different colour!).

    Sun Marquee

Spiritual odysseys are often the subject of the stories we share with one
another. The romantic idea of the soul's high adventure has been the
consistently compelling backbone of everything from ancient myths to
modern fiction. It's so deeply ingrained in cultures throughout the world
that it's become part of our collective cultural baggage. Austin-based
musician Abram Shook has done his share of wandering the world,
searching for a spiritual and a literal home. From road trips through
South America to surfing excursions in Indonesia, he's been fortunate to
have the opportunity to absorb more of the world's cultures first-hand
than many of us ever will.

After leaving Santa Cruz, California where he grew up and studied jazz,
Shook spent several years in Portland and Boston playing in numerous
bands, and wrestling with an unsettled spirit. Turning to traveling as a
means to quell his existential dread, eventually landed him in Austin, TX,
where he's been part of the city's rich creative community for over 8
years. Though the music community in Austin is no substitute for the
briny air and patient West Coast beaches he still longs for, its vitality and
creativity still manage to nourish the soul.

Abram Shook's solo debut, Sun Marquee breathes with the lungs of a man
that finally found a new place to call home, while also reflecting upon the
circuitous path that led him here. Propelled by Shook's impeccable bass
groove, and inspired by artists like Shuggie Otis, Serge Gainsbourge, and
Tom ZÉ, Sun Marquee distills lessons learned and questions unanswered
into an accessible collection of pop songs.

    Home Again

Few records make such an instant impression as Home Again, the debut album by Michael Kiwanuka, winner of the prestigious BBC Sound of 2012 prize. Immersing the listener in a sound that is both modern and at the same time as familiar as the classics, it manages to strike the balance between being contemporary and somehow utterly timeless. For Kiwanuka, key musical touchstones include Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Shuggie Otis, Roberta Flack's First Take, Bill Withers' Live At Carnegie Hall and D'Angelo's modern soul landmark Voodoo.

Born in Muswell Hill to Ugandan ÉmigrÉ parents, Kiwanuka was brought up in a home from which music was largely absent, with his first introduction to rock (Nirvana, Radiohead) arriving at the same time as he began to hang with the skater kids in the north London suburb during his early teenage years. Later coming across a soul compilation album given away with a music monthly, he was enthralled by the sound of Otis Redding's studio talkback discussions with his engineer while recording an outtake version of (Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay. From this point on, he resolved to make music that sounded raw and authentic.

Though deeply into soul and jazz, he found real inspiration in the cross-pollination of the two styles with folk in the music of Bill Withers. "Bill Withers was very rootsy and earthy," he points out, "but people branded him as a soul singer. To me, he was a folk artist. So that encouraged me to keep going, 'cause I didn't know where I would fit in as a black guy with an acoustic guitar."

While performing on the acoustic circuit around London, Kiwanuka quickly attracted interest and made connections, not least with his current manager who in turn garnered the attention of Communion Records, the label that in 2011 released the singer's first two acclaimed EPs, Tell Me A Tale and I'm Getting Ready. Both of these EPs, as with Home Again, were produced by Paul Butler (The Bees) in his vintage equipment-stuffed basement studio at his house in Ventnor on the Isle Of Wight. Together the pair played almost every instrument to be heard on the album, with Butler's remarkably intimate, detailed productions adorned with everything from flute to brass to sitar to aching strings, perfectly matching Kiwanuka's visions for his songs.

"The way we made the record was very modern," the singer points out. "There was loads of editing. We manipulated it to get exactly what we wanted." From the opening bars of the stirring Tell Me A Tale, it is instantly clear that Home Again is a very special album. While its more upbeat characteristics are embodied in the Prince Buster-like loping of the lovelorn but irresistibly catchy Bones and the rolling soul groove of I'll Get Along, elsewhere it proves itself to be a record of real stripped-down beauty.

In I Won't Lie, with its gospel-infused echoes of The Staples Singers, Kiwanuka offers something akin to a modern spiritual, while in Rest he turns in a tender love lullaby and in Always Waiting, he blends classical elements with the confessional intimacy of Roberta Flack. It is with the title track of Home Again, however, that Michael Kiwanuka feels the record's sounds and themes are ultimately encapsulated. "That's the song that really for me ties everything together," he says. "It's one of the earliest songs I wrote for the album and even though I progressed and changed stuff in the studio, it was the one I could never throw away. Like a lot of them, it's a hopeful song. I use home as the metaphor for contentment and peace within."

Other parts of the record, on the other hand, find Kiwanuka struggling for peace of mind and using his songs as a form of self-empowerment, not least in the soulful I'm Getting Ready, the darker, unburdening Any Day Will Do Fine and the self-explanatory Worry Walks Beside Me. "It can really paralyze you, if you worry too much," the singer admits. "I do tend to overthink things. All of these songs are me talking to myself, really. Trying to encourage myself to believe."

    Salad Days (Out Of Stock)

"As I'm getting older, chip up on my shoulder..." is the opening line from Mac DeMarco's
second full-length LP 'Salad Days,' the follow up to 2012's lauded 'Mac DeMarco 2.'
Amongst that familiar croon and lilting guitar, that initial line from the title track sets the tone
for an LP of a maturing singer/songwriter/producer. Someone strangely self-aware of the
positives and negatives of their current situation at the ripe old age of 23.

Written and recorded around a relentless tour schedule (which picked up all over again as
soon as the LP was done), 'Salad Days' gives the listener a very personal insight into what
it's all about to be Mac amidst the craziness of a rising career in a very public format. The
lead single, "Passing Out Pieces," set to huge overdriven organ chords, contains lines like
"...never been reluctant to share, passing out pieces of me..." Clearly, this isn't the same
record that breezily gave us "Dreamin," and "Ode to Viceroy" but the result of what comes
from their success. "Chamber of Reflection," a track featuring icy synth stabs and soulful
crooning, wouldn't be out of place on a fantasy Shuggie Otis and Prince collaboration.
Standout tracks like these show Mac's widening sound, whether insights into future
directions or even just welcome one-off forays into new territory.

Still, this is musically, lyrically and melodically good old Mac DeMarco, through and through.
The same crisp John Lennon / Phil Spector era homegrown lush production that could have
walked out of Geoff Emerick's mixing board in 1972, but with that peculiar Mac touch that's
completely of right now. "Brother," a complete future classic, is Mac at his most soulful and
easygoing but with that distinct weirdness and bite that can only come from Mr. DeMarco.
"Treat Her Better" is rife with "Mac-isms," heavily chorused slinky lead guitar, swooning
vocal melodies, effortless chords that come along only after years of effort, and the other
elements seriously lacking in independent music: sentiment and heartfelt sincerity.

We're only at Part 2 and 1/2 (one EP and two LP's in) into Mac's career. As you read this
and as you hear the album on April Fool's Day of this year, he'll probably be on tour, or
preparing for one... or maybe already writing new music. A relentless work ethic is something
to be admired in today's indie music scene, but when it's of the quality Mac is giving us time
and time again, it starts to turn from admiration to awe
