    This unique session contains five selections from a date featuring the great tenor Coleman Hawkins, pianist Hank Jones, bassist George Duvivier and drummer Shelly Manne. Both Take the 'A' Train and Cherokee find the group at times playing two tempos at once and showing that they had heard some of the avant-garde players. The most swinging piece, Avalon, was previously available only on a sampler while Me and Some Drums features Hawkins and Manne in a very effective duet with the veteran tenor making his only recorded appearance on piano during the first half. The set is rounded out by a pair of trio features for Eddie Costa (with Duvivier and Manne); one song apiece on vibes and drums. A very interesting set with more than its share of surprises.

Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.



    During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.



    A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.



    We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.



    We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.



    To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    This album came about through a fortuitous convergence of circumstances. Shelly Manne & His Men were appearing at New York's Village Vanguard, sharing the bill with the Bill Evans Trio. Getting Riverside's permission to let the pianist participate, Creed Taylor set up a session at Rudy Van Gelder's studio with Evans and Manne sharing top billing. Manne's bass player, Monty Budwig, made up the trio. This was a busman's holiday for Evans, who was freed from the musical parameters he had set for his then-current trio. The result is that his playing seemed lighter, freer, and more relaxed than it had for a while. The album kicks off with a jaunty version of Irving Berlin's The Washington Twist from the unsuccessful Mr. President with Budwig sharing the honors with Evans as much as Manne. Manne spends most of his time driving Evans into more diminished and sharper playing than was usually Evans' wont. Another relatively unfamiliar Berlin work, Let's Go Back to the Waltz, gives full reign to Evans' lyricism. The longest tune on the set is an audacious, almost lampooned version of With a Song in My Heart with light chordal phrasing that pretty much characterized much of the tone coming from this session.

    Somewhere Before is a live album by pianist Keith Jarrett recorded on August 30 & 31, 1968 at Shelly's Manne- Hole in Hollywood, California. It features Charlie Haden on double bass and Paul Motian on drums. The trio covers Bob Dylan's "My Back Pages" in an attractive, semi-funky style. "Pretty Ballad" is exactly what the title implies; Jazz hardly gets more subtle and beautiful than this. "Moving Soon" is a chaotic Free Jazz jam. In "New Rag" we begin to hear the distinctive Jarrett style. As an example of early, unfocused Jarrett, this is simply fascinating material.

Over his long and distinguished career, Sonny Rollins has made many dozens of albums. Among those recorded during the fifties, Prestige's Movin' Out and Colossus, Blue Note's A Night at the Village Vanguard, Riverside's The Sound of Sonny, and Way Out West on Contemporary qualify as all-time Rollins classics.


    The session for Way Out West, Rollins' first ever in California, was called for 3 a.m. to accommodate everyone's busy schedules. Sonny, who could never be accused of overstatement, announced after four hours of recording: I'm hot now.

    This release offers a unique glimpse of a young Chet Baker in a quintet setting, complemented by a nine-piece string section. Utilizing the uniquely modern arrangements of Johnny Mandel, Marty Paich, Jack Montrose, and Shorty Rogers, this interaction of 'West Coast cool' with primordial elevator music escapes many - if not indeed all - of the potential sonic pitfalls such a marriage might suggest. In the truest sense of the word augmentation, the string arrangements provide the desired opulence sans the heavy-handed or syrupy residual effects. Perhaps most inspiring about this outing is the success with which Baker and crew are able to thrive in this environment, providing subtle insight into the quintet's ability to simultaneously adapt and explore. Love Walked In incorporates a trademark volley of interaction between Baker and Sims. Love contains what is arguably the most successful implementation of the string section, as well as some stellar soloing by Freeman. In fact, his contributions to this particular recording rank among his finest with Baker and company. The same enthusiasm can likewise be applied to A Little Duet for Zoot and Chet. Not only are Sims and Baker in top flight, but the string arrangement swings irresistibly as well. The easygoing and otherwise winding strings support the cool bop like a kite in a March breeze - light, airy, and conspicuous only in altitude.

    Music From The Hit TV Show


    A Score Focused On Percussion And African Sound


    Cut in the birth pangs of electric fusion and afro-funk, West Coast drummer Shelly Manne's brilliant score for the popular '60's TV series Daktari still stands as a global fusion landmark.


    Daktari is an album by drummer Shelly Manne recorded in 1967 featuring music from Daktari. The heavy use of the marimba with various percussion instruments serves the score well and makes it a huge success.


    On the album, Mike Wofford plays a tack piano to evoke an African sound, and Manne is joined by percussionists Emil Richards, Larry Bunker, Frank Carlson, and Victor Feldman. According to the record liner notes, Manne and fellow percussionists play ankle and wrist jingles, Thai mouth organs, angklungs, ocarinas, vibraphones, tympani, and different kinds of marimbas.


    Steely Dan guitarist Walter Becker was a fan of the album's 'vaguely African' music, sounding like it came from Hollywood session players rather than actual Africans. In the late 1990s, Becker modelled a percussion sequence after this style on the song Two Against Nature released on the Steely Dan album of the same name.

    Chet Baker was one of the representatives of the West Coast Cool Jazz movement whose life and music appeals to the imagination of the people the most.

    Chet Baker With Strings was recorded during three sessions in 1953 with Zoot Sims & Jack Montrose on tenor sax, Russ Freeman on piano, Shelly Manne on drums and Clifford 'Bud' Shank on alto sax.


    The players are lifted up into the air like a leaf on the breeze by Montrose's delicate string arrangements, while the Baker and Sims interplay on songs like 'Loved Walked In' are amongst the best recorded in jazz history.

    Nostalgia Suite

    The Roger Kellaway Cello Quartet made two albums for the A & M label in 1971 and 1973, The group's name presented a puzzle to some people. It seemed to connote four celli. In fact it was a chamber group built around the sound of one cello, that of the brilliant Edgar Lustgarten, and featuring the virtuosic piano of Kellaway, the powerful and sensitive bass of Chuck Domanico, and the rich, coloristic percussion of Emil Richards. Roger wrote all the group's music.


    ''The idea,'' Roger says, ''was for it to be a marriage of wood - cello, marimba, bass, and piano. Also, I wanted to prove that a band of that instrumentation had the flexibility to do anything. And I was afraid the drums would fill up the spaces between the instruments, which is why we didn't have a drummer.''


    But throughout the life of the Cello Quartet, Roger maintained a second group, a trio, whose purpose was (among other things) hard swinging. Roger was actually somewhat afraid of putting the two concepts together, but in time he began to feel a need to do so. And at this point, drummer and percussionist Joe Porcaro became a member of the group, thereby transforming it into the Cello Quintet. Joe is, in addition to being a fine jazz drummer, a symphony percussionist. He and Emil Richards are both natives of Hartford, Conn., and in fact went to high school together. Joe played with the Hartford Symphony. It is this background Roger feels, that makes him so sensitive to the purposes and textures of the Cello Quartet - pardon, Quintet. ''If the drummer can't hear the cello'', Roger said, ''then he's playing too loud. And Joe is simply perfect for this group.''


    Porcaro, in fact, does one of the most difficult things a drummer can be called on to do: he swings quietly. It is a natural physiological tendency of a drummer (or any instrumentalist, for that matter) to push when he is involved in the high energy of swinging. Any musician knows that it is harder to play softly than loud. But I think it is particularly difficult for a jazz drummer to put out an excited and exciting pulse softly. Certainly few drummers can do it. Joe is one who can. ''Another thing,'' Roger says. ''Joe works beautifully with Emil, and this gives Emil more freedom to play melodic instruments, such as chimes. And Joe's abilities as a percussionist mean that at times we can have two percussion players.''


    ''The album represents only one aspect of why the drums were added. I've been interested in a maximum of versatility, and in a way the Nostalgia Suite was written to show the possibilities of swinging with the cello.''


    ''At this point in my life, when I?ve had 25 years or so of involvement with the pop market as well as with jazz and classical music, seeing so many of my colleagues beating their brains out trying to get a hit single, it almost seems novel that I've been able to hold onto my roots. I've dealt with the AM singles market too, but I've never forgotten where I came from, and that?s what the Nostalgia Suite is about.''


    ''There is no other piece in our repertoire like it, It is an entity unto itself. It is essentially a bebop piece, and it may come as a surprise to people who are familiar with the other albums. But it should not be considered the new sound of the group. I just wanted to hear bebop by the Cello Quartet.''


    ''As a matter of fact, we first did it with the Quartet, without drums, at Shelly's Manne Hole. Shelly couldn?t stand it. He'd grab a stick and start playing on Emil's cymbals. He kept saying, 'Man, this piece needs drums.' I began to think that perhaps he was right. Joe Porcaro was the logical choice, because he could, as an excellent percussionist, enable us to continue doing the mellow sounds of the group.''


    ''This album could be thought of, then, as an extension of the previous albums, a broadening out. The way I think about the group and the people in it is that we can do any kid of music from Jelly Roll Morton to Ravi Shankar to Luciano Berio.''


    ''I have never thought of the Cello Quartet and now the Quintet as a jazz or a classical band. It is its own band.''
