    Salt Lick (Deluxe Edition)

TAD was a mighty force in the late-'80s/early-'90s Seattle scene. Their heavy, churning rock/metal/punk buzz was a crucial part of Sub Pop's early years, and, along with peers like Mudhoney, Nirvana, and Soundgarden, they defined the sound that reinvigorated the rock world in the early '90s. TAD was led by the physically imposing yet incredibly sweet singer/guitarist TAD Doyle, with bassist Kurt Danielson (ex-Bundle of Hiss), drummer Steve Wied, and guitarist Gary Thorstensen. With an image that sometimes cast the band as deranged lumberjacks, and influence from Head of David and Killdozer, TAD put a uniquely rain-and-fog-coated Northwest spin on '80s underground rock. The band released two albums and a few EPs on Sub Pop between 1988 and 1991, all of which are now lovingly remastered by the band's friend and engineer Jack Endino (Soundgarden, Nirvana, Mudhoney, Screaming Trees) and repackaged with expansive liner notes.

After their 1989 debut album, God's Balls, TAD continued to write and record, releasing a string of singles and the Salt Lick EP between 1989 and 1990. Salt Lick features the single "Wood Goblins," the video for which MTV banned because it was, to the delicate eyes of MTV programmers, "too ugly." The sounds of Salt Lick are, indeed, wonderfully ugly, thanks in part to the involvement of noise-rock technician Steve Albini (Big Black, Shellac, Nirvana, The Jesus Lizard), who recorded the EP. The band continued to release singles and gain momentum in the press. As TAD himself puts it: "Lyrically we had a lot of subject matter that was meant to be tongue in cheek from the beginning but had been presented by Sub Pop and ourselves as true-to-life. As a result, the press had taken it all seriously and began to feed on and ravenously devour the mythology that we had created."

    Pure

Remastered From the Original Tapes by Steve Albini and Bob Weston.

Here's the EP that started it all. Released in 1989, Pure began The Jesus Lizard's incomparable run as America's leading and thoroughly unclassifiable noise-rock band whose influence looms just as large today, if not larger, than in its heyday. The band's 2009 reunion is one of the most-talked about tours of the year.

Part of Touch & Go's stellar Jesus Lizard reissue campaign, Pure has been meticulously remastered from the original tapes by Bob Weston (Mission of Burma, Shellac) and original engineer Steve Albini. This new pressing presents Pure in a sonic light that exceeds even the best expectations.

Vinyl EP packaged in an album jacket sporting the original Pure art, with a brand new 12 x 24 double sided color insert including never before seen photos, and extensive liner notes by the band and by journalists who were there when it was all happening.

    Down

Remastered From Original Tapes by Steve Albini and Bob Weston.

By the time The Jesus Lizard released Down in 1994, alt-rock had long exploded and penetrated the commercial mainstream. Despite being a hair more subdued than the noise-rock band's previous releases, the still-manic Down didn't break through, but unlike most releases of the time, it didn't compromise either. The Jesus Lizard's final studio album for Touch & Go and last record produced by Steve Albini, it's also the last essential statement the band put down on tape. And it's never sounded better.

Part of Touch & Go's stellar Jesus Lizard reissue campaign, Down has been meticulously remastered from the original tapes by Bob Weston (Mission of Burma, Shellac) and original engineer Steve Albini. The new pressing presents Down in a sonic light that exceeds even the best expectations. There's greater space between instruments, heightened dynamics, a more solidified midrange, and an incredible boost in energy. Benefiting from Albini's dry, spare, and no-frills production, indie-rock has seldom sounded so dangerous, physical, blunt, or fervent.

    Bulldozer EP

Remastered By Steve Albini And Bob Weston At Chicago Mastering

Big Black was started by Steve Albini in 1982 while he
was living in Evanston, Illinois, and attending Northwestern
University. Lungs, the first Big Black release, was recorded by
Steve in 1982 on a borrowed 4-track. He played everything on
the EP himself except the sax bleating courtesy of pal John
Bohnen and the drums courtesy of Roland. Soon after, Steve
recruited Jeff Pezzati (Naked Raygun) to help him out on bass.
Santiago Durango (Naked Raygun) joined them on guitar. In
1983, together with live drummer Pat Byrne, they recorded the
Bulldozer EP. It was initially released in a limited edition
galvanized metal album jacket on Fever Records. By 1984, the
band had done some touring and signed a deal with Homestead
Records, releasing the Racer X EP, the Il Duce 7", and their
first full-length Atomizer as well as The Hammer Party CD.
Shortly after those releases, freed from their Homestead deal,
Big Black came to Touch and Go. In 1992, Touch and Go re-released the Bulldozer EP.

By 1987, Big Black released two additional 7"s, The
Headache EP, as well as their second full-length Songs About
Fucking. They toured extensively (for Big Black). And they
broke up. To quote the album insert in Songs About Fucking:
"Hey, breaking up is an idea that has occurred to far too few
groups. Sometimes to the wrong ones."

When they broke up, Santiago Durango decided to go
to law school and is now a lawyer. While in law school, he released two EP's on Touch and Go Records as Arsenal. Steve
Albini went on to form Rapeman and then Shellac. He also
owns and operates Electrical Audio recording studio in Chicago.

    Liar

Remastered From Original Tapes By Steve Albini and Bob Weston.

Originally released in 1992, the Jesus Lizard's Liar set a new standard for noisy, visceral indie rock that has yet to be matched. Fronted by powder-keg vocalist David Yow and featuring one of the tautest rhythm sections ever assembled, the Chicago-based quartet matched tension with physicality, madness with delight, and sheer intensity with nightmarish force. Liar finds the band at its peak, the post-punk music exploding with raw urgency, primal grime, and ferocious emotion. And the mayhem has never been better.

Part of Touch & Go's stellar Jesus Lizard reissue campaign, Liar has been meticulously remastered from the original tapes by Bob Weston (Mission of Burma, Shellac) and original engineer Steve Albini. The new pressing presents Liar in a sonic light that exceeds even the best expectations. There's greater space between instruments, heightened dynamics, a more solidified mid-range, and an incredible boost in energy. This is as close as it gets to witnessing the Lizard onstage; indie-rock has seldom sounded so dangerous, physical, blunt, or fervent.

From the opening caterwaul of Boilermaker to the auto-parts clang of Gladiator to the twisted rodeo that is Rope, the Lizard utilize dynamics, silences, and textures in ways no group has ever come close to duplicating. Freakish, weird, beautiful, and overwhelmingly influential.

Vinyl packaged in deluxe gatefold album jacket with 12 x 24 double sided color insert including never before seen photos, and extensive liner notes by the band and by journalists who were there when it was all happening.

1000 Hurts is the third full length album by Shellac, released July 31, 2000 (see 2000 in music). It is Shellac Record #11. In its official promotional materials Shellac described this album as follows: There are no 12-minute songs on this one. This record is more mean-spirited. Todd sings. The cover is a clear homage to the Grateful Dead's Dick's Picks series of live albums. The album was named Rockfeedback magazine's record of the decade.

Remastered from Original Masters by Steve Albini and Bob Weston.

A head-splitting jolt of relentless anxiety, frantic paranoia, concussive racket, and oddball frenzy, The Jesus Lizards Goat became an instant indie-rock landmark upon its 1991 release. Instigating, cutthroat, and snarling through broken teeth, it became the blueprint followed by the likes of Nirvana, Helmet, Fugazi, and the Melvins, and its never sounded better!

Part of Touch & Gos stellar Jesus Lizard reissue campaign, the pioneering Goat has been meticulously remastered from the original tapes by Bob Weston (Mission of Burma, Shellac) and original engineer Steve Albini. The new pressing presents Goat in a sonic light that exceeds even the best expectations. Theres greater space between instruments, heightened dynamics, a more solidified mid-range, extended imaging, deeper soundstage, and an incredible boost in energy. Benefitting from Albinis dry, no-frills production, indie-rock has seldom sounded so dangerous, physical, or fervent.

    Handwriting (Awaiting Repress)

Rachel's began recording in April of 1991 in Baltimore, MD under the direction of Christian Frederickson and Jason Noble. Subsequently, they met and became close friends with Rachel Grimes (who was given a copy of their Rachel's Halo cassette because of her first name). In September of 1994 after a few more city moves, band break-ups, and general melancholy, these three musicians decided to become a full time band and complete their first recording, Handwriting.

The trio assembled other musicians who they respected; John, Mark and Barry from the Chicago supergroup the Coctails, Kevin Coultas from Rodan, Shellac bassist Bob Weston, and several other string players from various walks of life. The result was a group of semi-vagrants, some reading from sheet music, some rambunctious noisemakers, working from an equally improvisational and tight-assed way.

Since the release of Handwriting in 1995, Rachel's has performed in libraries, churches, rock dungeons, ballrooms, gardens, bowling alleys and movie theaters across the world. They have worked with filmmakers, dance companies, stage productions, printmakers and photographers. Their recordings and shows have been described as subversives with a cello, classical post-rock, post-classical and lo-fi Louisville loafers.

    Riposte

Brooklyn-based Buke and Gass (pronounced Byook and Gace) are Arone Dyer on the buke (a six-string baritone ukulele) and Aron Sanchez on the gass (a guitar-bass hybrid). Both members also mobilize a small army of foot percussion, filtering the result through various pedals, amplifiers and homemade inventions while Arone's super melodic vocal lines weave through the beautiful yet unwieldy musical matter. It's a surprisingly complex sound for two people, and all the invention and musical multi-tasking makes for live shows that are visually unexpected and sonically explosive. Riposte is the debut album of the instrument-building, genre defying duo of Buke and Gass. Mastered by Bob Weston (Chicago Mastering Service, Shellac).

    Head

Remastered from Original Tapes by Steve Albini and Bob Weston.

The Jesus Lizard's full-length debut announced the arrival of a band whose uncompromised approach, visceral tension, and scathing commentary would redefine the American underground. With the addition of drummer Mac McNeilly, the group's initial EP featured a drum machine, the Chicago-based quartet completed its evolution from a hardcore/industrial-inspired act into a distinctive band whose mix of metallic textures, rumbling grooves, vice-grip tension, and muscular rhythms can be heard for the first time on Head. And the landmark 1990 release has never sounded better.

Part of Touch & Go's stellar Jesus Lizard reissue campaign, Head has been meticulously remastered from the original tapes by Bob Weston (Mission of Burma, Shellac) and original engineer Steve Albini. The new pressing presents Head in a sonic light that exceeds even the best expectations. There's greater space between instruments, heightened dynamics, a more solidified mid-range, extended imaging, deeper soundstage, and an incredible boost in energy. Benefitting from Albini's dry, no-frills production, indie-rock has seldom sounded so dangerous, physical, or malevolent.
